S.1829
There is going to be a hearing on several bills in the Senate including S.1829 June 5th. Like other bills meant to protect children online, S.1829 as written does more harm then good. This hearing is believed to be a markup hearing, so use the information below to call the Senate Judiciary Committee. When you call make sure you emphasize the threat Trump poses is such a bill were to pass, especially to the Democratic members. Make sure to call between now and June 5th.

Call To Action: The Stop CSAM Act, S. 1829
As always, the powers that seek to take our privacy and safety from us look to get the jump on us and give us little time to prepare. Which is why we now have a new call to action.
This thursday, 6/5/2025, the Senate Judiciary Committee will be holding a meeting for a possible markup on S. 1829, the Stop CSAM Act.
Once again, the bill's good intentions and emotion-grabbing title are yet another Trojan Horse for a bill that would seek to peel back privacy and protections for citizens under the guise of a noble cause. This bill's intent, supposedly to create further accountability and make internet services have further accountability, is masked by the potential harms it can do.
As this bill intends to cause damage to the currently assailed Section 230 by carving out an exemption for allowing lawsuits against services which might host this type of content (redundant as Section 230 already does not cover things that are a federal crime), and attacks privacy by destroying the coverage of end to end encryption in online services which offer DMs and messages like WhatsApp, Facetime, Signal, and others. Making them ripe pickings for anyone who might want to hack into and access peoples' private messages. Especially in the current political climate where the President wants to create a database on US Citizens and privacy protections are being tested more and more.
I urge you to call and write the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee before this Thursday, to warn them of the dangers of this bill and urge them to not allow it to pass through committee.
Tell them to vote NO on S. 1829

BILLS LIKE STOP CSAM ARE TRYING TO BE SNUCK INTO THE NDAA, WHICH IS A MUST PASS BILL. THIS WILL NOT ONLY REMOVE ANY CHANCE OF PRIVACY, ENCRYPTION, AND FREE SPEECH, BUT IT WILL GUT THE INTERNET AS WE KNOW IT. THIS WILL NOT PROTECT CHILDREN AT ALL, IT WILL ONLY CENSOR THEM AND GIVE THEM NO SECURITY OR PRIVACY. CALL YOUR SENATORS AND SIGN PETITIONS!!

take action @ badinternetbills.com
send postcards and emails like this:
I oppose all bills that weaken end-to-end encryption, infringe upon teenagers’ constitutional right to free speech on the internet, and enable censorship of valuable online resources for abortion seekers and LGBTQ+ communities. If you truly care about young people’s experience on the internet, you should pass comprehensive data privacy legislation and oppose EARN IT, KOSA, the RESTRICT Act, STOP CSAM, the Cooper Davis Act, and age restrictions on social media.

CALLING ALL US CITZENS, CALL YOUR SENATORS
If you've been here for long enough, you've heard about KOSA. The Kids Online Safety Act is a harmful and horrific bill that would censor content for ALL, all under the name of "protecting kids". This is the same ideology of queer people and people of colour being inappropriate or sexual divants from the 1980s, 1970s going all the way back to the 1920s. Progressive bill my ass.
So we need all hands on deck to help fight!
If you're in the US:
CALL. YOUR. SENATORS.
You can use this resource to help
TELL THEM PEOPLE DON'T WANT THIS BILL AND THAT IT'S CONTROVERSIAL.
If you're not in the US,
Here's a linktree
Get sending those emails!

hey y'all
this link right here gives majority of the information needed about the situation regarding the governments plans to censor sites that host LGBTQ content (for example tiktok, twitter, wattpad)
sites such as tumblr & ao3 could be at huge risk due to their smaller size and more acceptability to taboo subject matters
these bills are supported by the right AND left and will cause more harm than good
it's not artists job to monitor what children do on the internet it's their parents/guardians
i just had to put on my big boy drawers & call a bunch a old folks i do not fuck with
it's that easy

Please sign petitions and call your representatives. These useless and harmful bills have bipartisan support so its an issue across the board. This site can inform you of all the bills, give you easy access to petitions, and offer scripts for when you call.

It shouldn't be against the law to provide an encrypted app. But if the STOP CSAM Act passes, it would make it a crime to offer encryption, because it could "facilitate" the sharing of illegal child abuse material (CSAM)—even if there's no evidence that a platform or service intended to do so. The law would undermine digital security for all internet users, impacting private messaging and email app providers, social media platforms, cloud storage providers, and many other internet intermediaries and online services.
Free speech would also be at risk. STOP CSAM would create a carveout in Section 230, the law that protects our online speech, exposing platforms to civil lawsuits for merely hosting a platform where part of the illegal conduct occurred. This carveout is similar to the disastrous SESTA-FOSTA law, which passed in 2018, and immediately resulted in companies removing online content and spaces for discussion in order to protect themselves from potential liability.
Congress already has tools in place to remove CSAM from the internet: current law prohibits the distribution of CSAM, and since 2008, providers have faced large fines if they fail to report CSAM after receiving actual knowledge of its presence on their platforms. Yet we know of no case where the federal government has ever enforced this provision. Congress must not pass this broad and dangerous law, and instead must use the tools that are already in place rather than outlawing important encrypted services.
Tell Congress: don't pass this law that would undermine security and free speech online.

Putting this over here to isolate this point: the OTW Volunteers did a lot of work to get AO3 back up and running after the DDoS. The OTW Board didn't do shit.
Your donations to AO3 go into OTW's financial reserve, and an estimate of how much they have is around $2.5 million (thread that breaks this down). They can maintain the platform for five years with what they have stored, and that number may be a low estimate.
OTW doesn't need your money. OTW's volunteers deserve financial compensation for all they've been subjected to, but none will see a penny from your donations.
Support the volunteers all you like, but know that your donations do nothing for them nor improve their working conditions.
Also stop being islamophobic assholes, the people who did this called themselves Sudanese just to get this kind of response. Grow up, learn to spot a troll, and go educate yourselves instead of constantly spewing racist shit.
