When I watched The Matrix back in 1999, I was struck by the scene in which Neo is running from Agent Smith and cuts through someone’s apartment. A woman is cooking in the kitchen. As Neo is about to exit through the opposite door, a kitchen knife barely misses him, embedding itself in the doorframe. Neo turns back to see that the woman has become Agent Smith.

This scene stirred my imagination, and I conceived of a video game with enough processing power and intelligence to provide motives for an entire city’s population. Rather than non-player characters (NPCs) following limited, pre-scripted routines, they would live out their lives, getting out of bed in the morning, showering, dressing, eating breakfast, and then heading to the office. The player would have complete autonomy, and interacting with an NPC would result in a reaction based on that character’s motives. If you engage them in conversation, they may try to ignore you, attack you, or ask you out on a date, depending on the context. If you interact with someone that is involved in the narrative, then you advance the plot sure enough, but interacting with a random NPC could also impact the story in unplanned ways.

Of course, the closest thing to that dream at the time was the open world of Grand Theft Auto 2. I’ve played several open world games, and there is definitely a balance that must be struck between player autonomy and crafting a compelling narrative. Too much autonomy results in a lot of time spent doing trivial tasks that don’t progress the story, but if you make the story too rigid, then the game just feels like it’s on rails. It may as well be a movie if you’re going to take away all control from the player.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my vision recently with the rise of generative AI chatbots. I imagine that fairly soon, we’ll see a game released that uses a genAI engine for NPC dialog. It could be provided knowledge of what the player has already done in the game and be given some boundaries that keep it on track with the game’s narrative. If done well, it could be pretty compelling in an RPG. From there, it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to having an AI engine that can adapt to the player’s actions such that, whatever path a player with full autonomy chooses through the game, the plot could be adapted so that the player always gets a compelling narrative.

So, a quick question: do you all think there’s a difference between being precise and being clear? I had someone in my department mention this to me the other day, and I said that I thought they were equally extensional (that is, everything which was precise was clear and everything that was clear is precise).  I was talking about this with @dumb8itch/Rachel/My Love and she said that they’re not the same at all. She gave the example of referring to a laser as being green, and then of referring to is as a laser of a certain wavelength which is in the range that we call green. The former is clearer. I said that it’s only clearer if I don’t know enough about physics to understand the more precise language of wavelengths; otherwise, it’s less clear because it’s more vague.

Then I tried clarifying (lmao) what I meant by saying the following:

I think i'd put it this way. There's clarity that stems from the accurate use of terms and concepts and then on top of that clarity stemming from good rhetorical composition. But with that, I'd say that precision is necessary and sufficient for the first type of clarity and that it's necessary but not sufficient for the second kind.

Then she (appropriately) made fun of me for being overly pedantic and overly technical. But I still think I’m more or less right? And, further, I think that *clarity from accuracy* takes precedence over *clarity from good rhetorical composition* but I don’t think that’s the common view.

That distinction, though, is why I’m imagining that a lot of people on here decry technical language? Because they’re looking for the second kind of clarity only, whereas many of us place an emphasis on both kinds? Or am I totally off base with all this.
