imagine if the shen family was actually a part of the mafia. and shen yuan just never knew.

like his Family is rich and they are all super close. he’s even in contact with some of his distant relatives pretty often, which is kinda cool for him, he’s sure that this isn’t the case for most families so he considers himself lucky to know the extent of his family tree. sure, some of them seem to have lost a marble or two but what family doesn’t have a couple oddballs in their midst, you know?

and its not just sy’s comical obliviousness that contributes to this. his family is well aware that sy is not suited for this life style- especially his siblings. they grew up watching him get himself into all sorts of weird situations and putting himself at a disadvantage simply because he’s too nice. he can try and deny it all he wants (just like how he denies he’s gay- c’mon sy everyone can tell you are not straight) but his sense of justice would only burden him if he were to work for the Family. not to mention his sense of self preservation is absolute shit and they don’t want to have to babysit him his whole life- and he probably doesn’t want that either!

so they send him off to college, help him find an apartment, and basically do everything they can to help him start off on his own, away from the Family. his siblings had to do a whole lot of convincing to let this happen btw- this kind of thing usually isn’t allowed, but sy doesn’t know anything that could be used against the Family, so they make an exception in his case. better for them to not have a deadweight sticking around either is what they say but they all dote on him anyways and refuse to admit they care about him. sy definitely picked up this line of reasoning from them btw.

shen yuan is a little upset and confused that his Family seems eager to send him off (it’s not like they can’t afford for him to live with them after all- both of his older brothers still live in the Family’s massive house and even his aunts and uncles are living there??). he manages to recover quickly though. at least now he can read his web novels in piece without prompting any dick jokes (his cousins had a field day when they found his account with all of his pidw comments…). now he just needs to figure out how to live by himself.

it’s not that sy is incapable of taking care of himself- it’s just that he’s so used to having other people with him that he never understood how much they were doing for him until they were no longer around. but that’s fine, living on your own is just another learning curve and sy is willing to rise up to the challenge. which he did, by the way! he found a job and pays his taxes and even though that isn’t much he still gives himself a mental pat on the back for it. he is still in contact with his siblings, he never misses an update for pidw which he totally doesn’t get excited for and his life is going great.

……until he accidentally eats some expired food and dies.

doctor! Abby who met you on a late night shift because you both needed coffee. She saw you on the hospital's cafeteria, you had a different uniform so she couldn't take her eyes off of you because you weren't suppose to be there at all.

doctor! Abby who over heard your conversation with another coworker of yours just to know why you were here.

doctor! Abby who actuallly knew that coworker and got caught listening to your conversation with them. Who couldn't feel more embarrassed when they presented the two of you because she thought you would be mad or something.

doctor! Abby who thought you were really pretty since you turned around to greet her and it only made her feel more flushed because this couldn't be the first impression she would give to you.

doctor! Abby who wanted to insist but ended up being forced by the other coworker instead to pay for the three of you. And who specifically insisted to you to let her pay your order when you said it wasn’t necessary.

doctor! Abby who got excited when you ordered a black coffee because she'd never met someone else that liked their coffee like that. And who’s excitement disappeared once she noticed that you would actually order for more people.

doctor! Abby who let you know about much she liked black coffee and how surprised she was. Who after that would not stop talking to you.

doctor! Abby who was pretty good at small talk and flirting at the same time and wouldn't try to hide it.

doctor! Abby who ended up asking for your number in case you ever needed to come to her side of the building again for anything. And who insisted on personally bring you coffee if you ever needed.

doctor! Abby who ended up being making fun of by her coworker who was third-wheeling and who got all shy again because she hated how your first interaction was going.

doctor! Abby who offered to help you with your order because you'd bought drinks for other people and she didn’t wanted you to get hurt or anything. Who also wanted desperately to get rid of her coworkers.

doctor! Abby who asked what area were you working at even though she already knew, just to hear your voice and not let the conversation die so awkwardly. And who seemed interest at everything you said.

doctor! Abby who asked you if you usually worked at late night shifts and felt blessed when you told her that It was only tonight, to cover someone else that couldn't attend. Just like her.

doctor! Abby who saw how everyone looked at the two of you when you finally arrived to your area and felt a bit intimidated. Who wouldn't take her eyes off of you when you started to hand out all the drinks you've bought some minutes ago and tough you were so sweet.

doctor! Abby who left feeling like a teenager in love again and really hoped you wouldn't forget about her.

thinking again about the idea that gallifreyan would have temporal pronouns that references an individual time lord ‘in general’ as opposed to referencing a specific rengeneration. and how the gallifreyan language probably has complex verb tenses or conjugations around not when events take place in the timestream but also tenses relating to where two time lords are in relation to each other.

in this vein, i love the idea that gallifreyan has three conjugations or words for the concept of “i can’t do or tell you that”:

“i am physically unable to do that / I don’t have the info you need”

“i am choosing to withhold this information and/or not do this / i promised i would not do or reveal this”

“i cannot tell you or do this because it would violate the laws of time / it gives you too much foreknowledge / it’s likely to cause a paradox”

while #1 and #2 can intersect, it makes sense to me that #3 would be its own separate concept or word. that it’s not just that you’re choosing to withhold something: you are bound by the laws of time to withhold it. you may badly, desperately, want to help this person change their future, but you know doing so could cause incredible damage to the timestream. “i’m so sorry. if it were up to me, i would tell you, but the universe won’t allow me to say.”
