Dorcas runs a hand through Marlene's hair gently, trying not to wake her up. Marlene sighs in her sleep and nuzzles in closer, clenching her hand briefly and then relaxing it.

Dorcas smiles softly and rubs Marlene's back.

"Enjoying the view?" Marlene mutters, her voice heavy with sleep.

Dorcas presses a kiss to the top of her head. "Always"

"Do we have to get up?" She sighs, shifting her head to look up at Dorcas.

"No, love. We can stay here for as long as you want."

Marlene doesn't deem that fit for a response, and settles for kissing Dorcas slowly, sweetly. They kiss just to kiss and there's something lovely about that.

rating regulus black ships!!

jegulus | 11/10 - i love them so much. when i rejoined the fandom in 2022 and saw how the ship had blown up in the years id been gone i was really confused, but then i read just lovers and was immediately convinced lmao. they are the epitome of sunshine x grumpy and i adore them both

bartylus | 5/10 - theyre not very compelling to me, but theyre not bad by any means. i think they work better as friends but i understand why people ship them. i just prefer other ships personally, but ive read many great fics with them too!

jegulily | 20/10 - im obsessed with them. i love regulus, james, and lily separately, but together they balance each other out. plus it helps that its a combination of my two most favorite monoamorous ships (jegulus and regulily), like whats not to like? theyre definitely a top tier ship

moonwater | 10/10 - they are so cute and so overhated! theres so much potential here, like they could be friends to lovers or enemies to lovers or rivals to lovers, basically any trope you can think of lol. and think of the angst! the drama! i love them dearly

regulily | 1000/10 - yall already know how i feel about these two! they are literal soulmates and i love them to bits. their personalities mesh so well and, this might be a controversial take, but they make more canonical sense than jegulus does imo (not that canon really matters in this fandom lmao). i could wax literal poetry about this ship i love them so much

rosewater | 6/10 - i have other ships i prefer for both of them but theyre still cute and i can see why people ship them. honestly its a similar situation to bartylus, except they intrigue me just the slightest bit more lol

regumary | 4/10 - im sorry i just cant see this ship. i can see their relationship being platonic but not romantic. i also think mary is a lesbian, which doesnt really mean much considering i also love the trans girl regulus headcanon, but most of the time when i see this ship its very cishet and just not my thing. sorry yall!

regdora | 2/10 - i just cant see this ship either. its not bad necessarily, i just see the relationship between regulus and pandora as that of a sibling relationship. no hate to people who ship them, its just not for me lol

rosestarkillerchaser | 6/10 - i understand why people ship them, its combining three popular ships (jegulus, bartylus, and rosekiller), but im sorry i just cannot see james dating barty and evan. im not hating on people who ship them and its not bad by any means (i like them more than most other ships involving evan & barty) i just dont actively ship them. ive read some good fics tho!

rosestarkiller | 5/10 - similar situation to bartylus yet again, its just not compelling to me. i think regulus works better with evan & barty as his friends rather than lovers which you can probably tell given my other ratings lol

blackeclipse | 10/10 - ooooo i love them. all the best aspects of jegulus, moonchaser, and moonwater in one, its elite. james brings the buoyancy that regulus & remus need while regulus & remus help keep him tethered. they work so well together and i love them all dearly

xenoreg | 8/10 - a crackship ive come to enjoy recently! definitely a weird x weirder kind of ship which is the best. oh to be a fly on the wall of the slytherin common room when regulus told barty, evan, and dorcas that he was dating xenophilius lestrange, ravenclaws resident conspiracy theorist (pandora, of course, would have been overjoyed to have someone to trade ideas with)

regulene | 7/10 - they intrigue me tbh, like marlenes brashness and regulus’ coldness contrast in just the right ways. theyre like fire and water and i love that. plus the potential for a quidditch rivalry is phenomenal, especially considering that they could both be the seekers for their respective teams. theyre kinda similar to dorlene imo

regulilylene | 9/10 - im gonna be honest here i think i made this ship up, but i really like their dynamic. marlene and regulus are on the opposite extremes of hot and cold and lilys right there in the middle to keep them grounded, she evens them out

My Year-End Wrap Up

It's nearing the end of the year and I've read a lot, and I mean a lot of fics this year. Millions of words worth of fics. Refusing to acknowledge I have a problem; that's something I'll face in 2024. It's become my nighttime routine and my favorite thing to do before I fall asleep. I thought I'd do a little roundup of my favorites. They're mostly Wolfstar with a smattering of Dorlene and Jily. These are them, in no particular order:

Let's Play Pretend by MsAlexWp - I had trouble choosing between this and A Potter's Field, which I also highly recommend. I followed this work in progress (now finished) all summer and it was an absolute delight. R/S are both young, single parents and pretend to date to appease the nosy ladies in Sirius's building. It is chicken soup for the soul and will make you both laugh and cry. I can't wait to reread it.

The Fragile House of Black by @fantismal and Jormandugr - This is a series that has a brilliant interpretation of the Prophecy. I don't think it's a stretch to say it's the best magical AU I've ever read. It also has a few Peter POV chapters and gives a backstory for why the betrayal happened, something I feel was undercooked with the original series. Heavy on Black brothers healing. It is perfection.

The Many Lives of Sirius Black by enigmaticblue - A bring back Black treat, also a series. Sirius goes through the veil and meets Regulus, who presents him with a series of doors which will allow him to restart during specific years. We get to explore what it would have been like through each choice.

Honey Honey by @aeoneskova - Marlene is teaching in the muggle world after essentially being exiled for trying to prove Sirius's innocence. That is, until an underfed boy with a scar and glasses ends up in her classroom. This is heavily influenced by Matilda. Marlene is a bad ass loner who can do it all.

The Hand that Feeds by @rollercoasterwords - A canon-compliant Dorlene enemies to lovers fic following the two from Hogwarts through the first war. It gives us an explanation to why Voldemort killed Dorcas personally. This backstory is canon to me.

10 Reasons to Go to Michigan by @greyeyedmonster-18 - Remus returns to his roots in the Upper Peninsula after abruptly leaving a 10 year relationship. This is about finding yourself again, and sometimes finding a little something more. It's just utter perfection. Sirius being a literal potter makes me chuckle.

Just What the Doctor Ordered by @wrapped-up - Sirius finds a stray puppy who he names Padfoot and brings him to the local veterinarian, Dr. Lupin, for help. This is about heartbreak, and finding love, and growing up. It was hard picking just one by wrapped-up because everything she writes is a work of art.

Under a Big Blue Sky by @eyra - Sirius and James, two wealthy city slickers, help out on the Lupins' farm for lambing season. If you liked God's Own Country, I highly recommend this, and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend both.

Don't Panic by redspottywellies - Lesbian Sirius and Remus absconding with Harry after the events of 10/31/81. This fic does action better than any I've read. Pure brilliance.

all the lonely people by superloonyluna - What would you do if a beautiful stranger asked you to join in an all-night heist?

The Archivist by @wanderingbandurria - An author and an archivist team up to uncover the mystery behind the commune in West Godric's Hollow. There is so much thought that went into world building for this fic.

Dorlene was my first ship in this fandom. Cause for some time I hated wolfstar (yes, I’m ashamed) and I wasn’t the no 1 Jily shipper but Dorlene was my favorite since I learned about the marauders fandom two years ago. And that was before the craze with the slytherins so the Dorlene I loved was friends to lovers, shy Dorcas x super extrovert Marlene, both gryffindors, bi Dorcas and lesbian Marlene, and dam, so much has changed and if I told my younger self that now Dorlene is rivals/enemies to lovers with Slytherin Dorcas she would slap me in the face.

hi, I've just finished reading the hand that feeds and wanted to tell you how stunning your writing is! I genuinely binged this fic I started it like three days ago and I was HOOKED!! The characters and their relationships are just <33333. as someone from the west of scotland whos like entire family grew up in the troubles I absolutely adorded having Marlene be irish and the parallels between the troubles and the wizarding war was just too much. I also really resonated with Marlene's characterisation and feelings towards Liam at the start of the fic, it was done so well and felt very real.

Also don't even get me started on Dorcas, she was just such a badass and I love a sort of morally grey/iffy character (though tbf i thought her actions were fair enough most of the time.)

anyways i just wanted to say that your fic is just so good and the last few chapters made me cry, I'm on my way now to scour the internet for dorlene fics.

ahh i'm late responding 2 this but thank u so much!! so happy that marlene + her characterization resonated w u <3 and that u appreciated the dorcas meadowes characterization as well! fleshing out their worldviews + conceptualizations of morality in contrast to each other was one of my favorite things 2 write--marlene definitely is more of an idealist and oftentimes falls into a sort of black + white/more strictly defined sense of morality, which i think makes her feel like a character w more moral convictions but at the same time makes her less loyal to her own internal sense of morality bc it's really difficult to uphold those neat boundaries in the context of a war, whereas dorcas is sort of more situational w her morality in that she has fewer broad moral convictions and doesn't put as much weight in the idea of ontological right + wrong, but bc of that she's actually much more loyal to her own internal + professed sense of morality throughout the story. which was just a very fun contrast 2 write!!

i don’t think I really hate any ship, I just have a lot that I feel indifferent about. but maybe dorlene? (am I gonna be burned at the stake?) I just prefer marylene, there is so much juicy drama going on, best friends to lovers. i think im just not big on enemies to lovers, plus i don‘t really know a lot about dorcas (or she’s different in every fic ig and I can’t pin her down) so I don’t really care for her.

lesbian wolfstar my loves!! so many so many (none come to mind rn why am i like this?). they are so gone for each other they‘re the most disgusting couple on the block. they were best friends and sirius made remus practice kissing with her at fourteen and it was an enlightening experience for both of them.

i have never written any bartylus, I don’t even think I’ve read any bartylus (where they are actually in love and endgame). The thing is that I like other ships involving them more, so if I do venture out (which is unlikely) it would more likely be one of those rather than bartylus. What I do think is interesting is one sided bartylus from either side really. so would read, would probably not write tho

Wolfstar is like a household name of the HP fandom. They have the range, and the fanbase to cover it. I really like the First Wizarding War stories, because *gestures* pain. For modern AUs I adore Stressed Overworked Sirius meets Bookshop/Librarian/Barista With Secret Traumatic Backstory Remus. Also I really do like this trend of remus and regulus being besties and accidentally getting into dating Sirius and James without anyone knowing they’re dating each other’s best friend/brother

Scent of the Moon a series, when Sirius loses his shit and announces to his parents that fuck them, he’s gay and fuck them, Walburga loses her shit and tosses him to Bellatrix who tosses him to Grayback. Sirius escapes barely alive and with a furry little problem. But, all turns out well. Regulus is so very lovely in here and by so very lovely I mean a bossy little shit whose love language is secretly protecting Sirius from afar

Dorlene's cute! I like Gryffindor!Marlene and Slytherin!Dorcas tripping over their words and feet because they're disaster lesbians for each other. But also if we're doing canon Hogwarts era I need them to get together with minimal drama. Leave the angst for Jegulus, these girls were snogging behind tapestries from the day one. They're a well-estabilished pairing, and I love that for them. (I don't really read them-centric fics tho. I'm character-oriented and the character who made my head turn was Regulus, so I mostly read them as side pairing.)

For Jily I'd say You Belong With Me or Our Song or Mine or by Taylor Swift... basically any Taylor from that era xD Also Toulavá by SEBASTIAN btw Daddy's Lessons by Beyoncé is 100% a Lily song to me

What is the point of RoseKiller if they're not unhinged? Actually ask me for a RoseKiller rant the next time. I've got Feelings. But their songs are like... The Ready Set by Killer, Flesh by Simon Curtis but the biting is metaphorical and romantic, this Für Elise remix, and eSeMeS is for them falling apart after Regulus' death :D

Fave Marvel ships! Tony/Bucky has some delishious shit, like it was a whole era, Bucky/Sam is fun, Tony/Loki fit together really well like oh my god I LOVE Tony supporting Loki through giving a middlefinger to Odin. Tony/Rhodey is SO underappreciated; every time I see someone call Steve Tony's best friend I go feral bite bite bite kill kill kill. Remus Lupin

I mean obviously. How could you not love him. I just... he's perfect. There are so many different ways people interpret his character, and the way his backstory is just so fucking tragic, yet he remains a good person throughout it all is just *chef's kiss*

Sirius Black

My bretheren. I relate to him so hard. Having troubles with family, not fitting in, feeling like you have enormous expectations to love up to, putting on a facade of confidence while actually being extremely insecure, I just love him so much.

Marlene McKinnon

My lesbian QUEEN. I think she and Sirius balanced eachother so well, and I adore the idea of her also being a slightly ignorant pure-blood who learned to be better through her friends (and girlfriend, Dorcas).

Regulus Black

There is so much that goes unexplored in Reggie's character. I love seeing the different directions that different people go in with him.

Love her. I hc Luna as an Autistic person, and she was such a comfort character growing up, showing me it was okay to be a bit different and like what you like, even if people laugh at you for it.

Ginny Weasley

Don't even get me started on how the movies did not do this queen justice. Adore her.

Hermione Granger

Hermione can get so much hate, and although she is a bit of a pain at times, I totally love her character and how she works so hard because she feels like she needs to in order to fit in (much like Remus).

Neville Longbottom

"Oh, let's take two obviouslt queer characters and just smash them together even though it makes no sense at all, just to stop speculation about them being queer". Fuck that shit. No. I see them as great friends, and I like fics in which they had Teddy as a one-night stand drunken mistake sort of thing but then become great co-parents, but as an actual couple, absolutely the fuck not.
