Pride Month Multi-fandom Rec list

Happy Pride month yall! As someone who is asexual I know we don’t get a lot of representation in the public media BUT we do sometimes get some really good representation in fan fiction. So, for Pride month I wanted to share some of my favorite fan fics from multiple fandoms that feature some really good representation of multiple different queer identities. As I am ace, there is probably more ace recs than anything else, but I have tried to include some other identities as well. So without further ado, I present to you a multi-fandom rec list that nobody asked for:

Ok so Sam Wilson is one of my favorite mcu characters and I am soo happy that he finally got his own show with Bucky but this is a fic from before tfatws featuring an ace Sam Wilson and his two supportive boyfriends: Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. This fic is beautifully written and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fic full of all those ace feels.

Dear Granger, Love Pansy by onlykatelyn. 6k words (hp: Pansimone, wlw)

I don’t tend to read a lot of wlw fics but this one is soo cute and angsty. It features a pining!Pansy who writes a series of heartfelt letters to Hermione and has Drarry and Blaron in the background. Its overall a super enjoyable read and even won a Drarry award in 2018!

when i’m set alight by @killproof. 6k words (atla: Zukka, trans-gay Zuko & bi Sokka)

This a cute little Zukka fic from Sokka’s perspective that basically follows the plot of the the second half of book 3 and shows Sokka falling for Zuko. It’s fluffy and adorable and features a trans Zuko but like it’s done really subtly and really well I think (also Aang and Toph are trans as well I believe).

Ok so I am in love with the idea of Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender being ace and this is one of my all time favorite ace Zuko fics. It is sooo soft and features an aromatic Toph Beifong and Sokka being the supportive partner that every ace hopes to find, and anyway its heartbreaking and adorable.

Such Things Are Possible by convenientalias. 13k words (Sense8: Rajalagang, Polyamory)

Ok so If you haven’t seen Sense8 stop what your doing right now and go watch it because it is an amazing scifi show with found family and more representation then you could dream of and this fic basically re-tales the last episode from the perspective of one of the characters in a CANON polyamorous relationship.

The Case of the Missing Cockatiel by gryvon. 14k words (Psych: Shassie, bi/pan/omni characters)

So I don’t think either Shawn or Lassiter’s sexualities are explicitly stated in this fic but Shawn is basically a chaotic bi in canon and defiantly not monosexual and Im pretty sure Lassie is bi/pan/omni in this fic as well. Either way its a great case fic featuring our favorite sassy psychic detectives who somehow managed to get real psychic powers this time. 

I Want You to Love Me (i want you to leave me) by @miniongrin. 20k works (mcu: Pepperony, ace Tony Stark)

I came across the Asexual Tony Stark tag at some point this year and I got a little obsessed because he is such and interesting character to read as ace. this is probably one of my favorite ace Tony fics featuring Tony trying to figure out and come to terms with his identity and a Avenger field trip to a pride parade. TW: Tony as an ace character participates in sex he’s not totally into because of social expectations and pressures that he feels under. 

you belong (to me) by hermionesmydawg . 30k words (mcu: Stucky, gay Buck & bisexual Steve)

So first off this is a NSFW BDSM fic so if that’s not your thing be warned. If you are cool with that though this is one of my favorite Stucky fics featuring a BAMF Natasha Romanov, a supportive Sam Wilson, and as the author puts it an “Aggressively bisexual Steve Rogers.” On top of the BDSM, it is mostly a cute friends-to-lovers fic about Steve, Bucky and their friends trying to live their lives after leaving the Avengers.  

Little Compton Street (One Rainy Night in Soho) by @writcraft & @celilasart. 66k words (Harry Potter: Drarry, mlm)

Both Harry and Draco identify as gay in this fic but I love it and wanted to include it in the list because the fic does a fantastic job of exploring queer history in the UK and puts a magic spin on it. It is also just a well written fic featuring loads of other lgbtq+ characters & fluffy romance with a side of smut.

TURN is amazing it is definitely one of the most amazing fanfics ever written. But don’t despair!! There are so many amazing other fics as well!

Every fic by saras_girl ever will give you that same sense of deep satisfaction. Trust me. Her advents are particularly amazing. These couple are my favourites of hers but read everything even all the one-shots.

(currently on hiatus in between books. She updates once a month like clockwork, like nearly to the day, when she is posting. No doubt it will continue)

Never Grow a Wishbone by @shanastoryteller 87k also a WIP and on hiatus. Updates monthly in rotation with siat. You gotta love politics, but it's so so worth it. Honestly. I read for the politics over anything else. Shana's world-building is like no other. Fits less on this list but I can’t not mention everything hp written by Shana sorry (not sorry at all tbh).

Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 302k Long. Vaguely angsty. So worth it.

A Piercing Comfort by talithan 44k I read this when I’m feeling down and it never fails to make me feel better. It's just so. sweet and perfect. CWs apply. Read the tags.

Wild by seefin 92k Beautiful. Very intriguing plot and magical theory. Different from most post-war fics and i love it.

I’m sure there are so many wonderful fics that I’m missing. In fact, I’m positive that there are ones I just can’t think of, and because I lost so many when my computer crashed (and I didn’t have a back up) I can’t go check. There are also so many lists out there. Frequent them! especially the ‘drarry for beginners’ lists that have all the amazing classics that I haven't included here because while they are absolutely fantastic and amazing don't elicit that deep warm bloom in the centre of my chest that TURN and every fic on this list does, or because they aren’t really my cup of tea.

Okay, I’m going to do something I almost never do. I’m going to get personal for a second. I am an intensely private person. I don’t like sharing much of anything about my life with anyone. But my fic, Soup-pocalypse and The Great Curry Cataclysm, just won a Drarry Award for one of the best Festival Fics of 2018. I want to tell you why this award means so much to me.

I have always been an extremely high achieving person—very good at setting goals and soaring fast and hard to meet them. Several years back, I got my MA in exactly what I had always wanted to do, got a job immediately after school with exactly the organization I had always wanted to work for, and was on track to keep doing what I had always planned. By the time I hit age 25, I was married, had an MA, was working my dream job, travelling internationally 3 or 4 times a year for work, and was exactly where I had always intended to be. I had skyrocketed, because that was what I had always done. Everything was exactly as I had planned.

Then, I got assaulted. And then again. And then another time. Nothing major, nothing extreme, but several times, all right in a row. Plus a lot of lesser harassment on a daily basis.

And those experiences, all crowded together like that, forced a resurgence of an enormous amount of trauma from things that had happened years ago, which I had never dealt with. I couldn’t deal with those things while they were happening—I was far too busy skyrocketing! I didn’t deal with it, didn’t think about it, until suddenly I did. It happened fast. It was compounded by a lot of other factors, including the fact that the dream job turned out to be not as dreamy as I had dreamed. Money was a problem. Northern winters were hard af for this Florida girl. There were a lot of things. 

Long story short, I had a breakdown.

I quit my dream job. Left the city around which I had planned my life. Moved across the country. Gave embarrassed and evasive, lying answers to family and friends who asked why I was doing this. Became a recluse.

Thankfully, I have a really supportive spouse, and he has a really good job. We could afford for me to take some time to get healthy.

The new plan was always writing. Publishing. It has always been a love of mine. I have done side-hustle freelance work in the publishing industry for about ten years, and I know what to expect, know the ins and outs of how it works. I have written a lot of practice books. I couldn’t work in a traditional office job anymore, but I could write! I knew how to do that, and I would have the time. I figured this was a good time to focus on that.

Except I couldn’t.

I struggled to write. I struggled to care. I wasn’t healthy. My brain could not create. It made me even more frustrated. I was a high achieving person! I had grand ambitions once, and I was intensely competent. I have always been the kind of bitch who gets shit done. It was devastating to realize that I was no longer capable of anything but staring at the wall for hours. My only skill.

But then, Drarry.

I had an idea for a fic. I used to write fic 15 years ago, when I was a teenager. I hadn’t touched fic or thought about it in years and years and years. But while sitting around, staring at the wall in a fog, I had an idea for a fic. A silly little one shot.

I sat down and wrote it in one burst. It was the first thing I was able to create in years. I shared it on AO3. Some people liked it. That was The Potion Makes the Rules.

And then, I had a few more ideas. Silly ideas. Fluffy ideas. I wrote them in rare bursts of energy and shoved them onto the internet, desperate to post them as fast as possible because maybe some depression goblin would take them away from me if I didn’t share them fast enough.

Slowly, bit by bit, I got better. A lot of things helped (take your damn vitamins, kiddos). Fic was one of the most important support systems on my healing journey. It helped me get better. It was also a litmus test for how I was doing. At my worst, I could write nothing but fluffy one-shots, the words ripped out and flung into the world with a sort of desperation. As I got better, the fics I wrote got longer and more nuanced.

If you have read Soup-pocalypse, you know that fic is a behemoth. Over 100k. And more than just fluffy.

I will always love that first short, fluffy fic—The Potion Makes the Rules—because it was the best I could create at my worst.

Soup-pocalypse is evidence of what I can do after a solid year of no major depressive episodes. It means a hell of a lot to me that this fic won this award. It was a hard fight to get to a point where I could write something like Soup-pocalypse, and it means the world to me that other people wanted to celebrate that story.

I cannot tell you what this community has done for me personally. I am not a big name. I don’t interact much. I don’t have many fics to share. But the love and support this fandom has given me has been sustaining. Every single morning, for the past two years, I have started my day with an email from AO3. Every. Single. Morning. I wake up and I am greeted by that red template, with the message “You’ve got kudos!” Sometimes it’s just one anonymous guest reader. Sometimes it’s a list of names, some of which I recognize and respect for their own writing. But there is always something. Every morning, through some of my worst days, that positivity greets me with the sun.

I cannot possibly quantify the impact that has had on my well-being.

So thank you. Thank you, Drarry fandom. Writing in this space—with no rules, no criticism or critique, no stakes, no pressure, just pure and simple writing for the sake of writing—has helped me find the joy in creating again. I have gone back to original fiction, and I never could have gotten there without Drarry fic. Maybe this award would seem silly to people outside of our community. Maybe it’s not something I can put on a resume. But it means the world to me. This story is one of my proudest achievements, and it is incredibly meaningful to me that readers and the Drarry Awards have decided to celebrate it in this way. Thank you to everyone who has read and shared my stories, and thank you to everyone who gave Soup-pocalypse this award. Without all of you, I would probably still be staring at the wall.

2018, Fic Report, Week 1

So, it’s a new year, new beginning, etc. Out with the old, in with the new. yay.

During 2017, I didn’t start keeping a word count until a few weeks into the year (which is why last week was week 44 instead of 52. So, my word count for the year is off by like 2 months.) but in those 10 months, I wrote 785,508 words.

Pretty sure I won’t beat that. @27dragons and I wrote Safe and (the) Sound in 6. days. so, you know, that kind of thing only happens once in a lifetime, I expect.  

Projects I worked on this week

current Sandbridge novel - 943 words

All I need is the Air - collab with @beir who has gotten a cover-art sort of pre-drawing done. 1,630 words. I’m almost done with this as a first draft. I need to finish the battle and do the smut, but that’s all.

The Magic and the Man - chapter four and ending of Killer and the Kid, one of my more wildly popular short fics, very salty with an extra special dose of Not Team Cap Friendly. I wrote 5,940 in a DAY and y’all gotta stop with asking for a sequel of that, you’re making me cry.

What’s so Fine (About Art) - Murder (or a Heart Attack) sequel, writer!Bucky gets a literary award and has to go speak in public. 2,772 words, complete and should start posting tomorrow

Honestly that’s better than I was hoping for this week, especially as I had guests all weekend and didn’t get anything done on Friday - Sunday

After returning to Hogwarts for their 8th year, Harry and Draco can't seem to stop fighting, much to the irritation of staff and students alike. Their last fight escalated and Harry and Draco are forced to room together by a pretty angry Headmistress.

They will have to stay in their new quarters until they overcome their differences.

But it wouldn’t be McGonagall if she didn’t have a plan.

To help them achieve this goal (and to save everyone else from going crazy because of them) she gave them a charmed parchment that will ask a series of personal questions.

No offense but people can use kudos counts to see the best drarry fics. We don't need awards.

No offense taken! We know that people can filter by kudos on ao3 to find the most highly-rated Drarry fics from 2018. That doesn’t mean we can’t have awards!

The Drarry Awards isn’t about finding the most popular fic, it’s about the fics that readers love so much that they can’t stop thinking about it and just want to yell about it with their fellow Drarry lovers.

We might only get one nomination per category, and that’s fine because the writers who are nominated will know that someone loved their fic so much that they didn’t only leave kudos. They didn’t only leave a comment or post on Tumblr. This person loved that fic so much that they nominated it for a Drarry Award, in order to make sure that more people read and loved it too!
