Story Prompt 44
In a city cloaked in shadows and secrets, there existed a group of friends who danced on the edge of the law. They moved like shadows in the night, their laughter a blend of mischief and recklessness. But beneath their camaraderie lay a darker truth - a heinous crime committed on a fateful evening that would bind them together in ways they never imagined.
It was a night like any other, the air thick with anticipation and the streets alive with whispered promises. The friends gathered, their hearts pounding in unison as they embarked on a dangerous escapade. Among them stood a figure, the quiet observer who would unknowingly become the linchpin of their fate.
As they ventured deeper into the night, their actions spoke louder than words. They were rebels without a cause, seeking thrills in the darkness that threatened to consume them. And when the moment of reckoning came, it was the quiet one who found themselves behind the wheel, a silent accomplice to the chaos that ensued.
But as the sirens wailed and the handcuffs clicked into place, there was no protest, no defiance. For in the eyes of society, they were all guilty by association, bound by the threads of loyalty and betrayal.
The trial passed like a blur, the weight of their actions heavy upon their shoulders. Yet amidst the whispers of condemnation, there remained a sense of solidarity among them. They had chosen their path, and together they would face the consequences.
As they emerged from the courthouse, the world outside seemed to blur into a haze of flashing lights and probing questions. The quiet one, their gaze unwavering, met the glare of a journalist with a smirk.
"For our cause," they declared, their voice cutting through the chaos, "it was worth it."
And so, as they were ushered into the darkness of confinement, their journey had only just begun.
Years passed like grains of sand slipping through an hourglass, and the once-forgotten friends found themselves thrust into a world that bore little resemblance to the one they left behind. Technology had advanced, society had changed, and they were but relics of a bygone era.
Yet amidst the chaos, they found a glimmer of hope. For in the ashes of their past, they discovered a new purpose - to defy the very system that had cast them aside. And as they stood on the threshold of freedom once more, they knew that their journey was far from over.
"Looks like we're the villains now," one of them remarked, their voice tinged with bitter irony.
"But maybe," another replied, their gaze fixed on the horizon, "it's time for the villains to save the world."

Everyone I knew was wearing a clock as a shirt but the time was slightly different for all of them. Like, my mom’s might have said 6:43 while my brother’s said 8:02. When I pointed it out I got shunned from society by the “time wizards” and banished to the woods where I lived with other people who’d been cast out.

OpenAI previews voice generator that produces natural-sounding speech based on a 15-second voice sample
The company has yet to decide how to deploy the technology, and it acknowledges election risks, but is going ahead with developing and testing with "limited partners" anyway.
Not only is such a technology a risk during election time (see the fake robocalls this year when an AI-generated, fake Joe Biden voice told people not to vote in the primary), but imagine how faked voices of important people - combined with AI-generated fake news plus AI-generated fake photos and videos - could con people out of money, literally destroy political careers and parties, and even collapse entire governments or nations themselves.
By faking a news story using accurate (but faked) video clips of (real) respected and elected officials supporting the fake story - then creating a billion SEO-optimized fake news and research websites full of fake evidence to back up their lies - a bad actor or cyberwarfare agent could take down an enemy government, create a revolution, turn nations against one another, even cause world war.
This kind of apocalyptic scenario has always felt like a science-fiction idea that could only exist in a possible dystopian future, not something we'd actually see coming true in our time, now.
How in the world are we ever again going to trust what we read, hear, or watch? If LLM-barf clogs the internet, and lies pollute the news, and people with bad intentions can provide all the evidence they need to fool anyone into believing anything, and there's no way to guarantee the veracity of anything anymore, what's left?
Whatever comes next, I guarantee it'll be weirder than we imagine.
Here's hoping it's not also worse than the typical cyberpunk tale.
PS: NEVER ANSWER CALLS FROM UNKNOWN NUMBERS EVER AGAIN
...or at least don't speak to the caller. From now on, assume it's a con-bot or politi-bot or some other bot seeking to cause you and others harm. If they hear your voice, they can fake it saying anything they want. If it sounds like someone you know, it's probably not if it's not their number saved in your contacts. If it's about something important, hang up and call the official or saved number for the supposed caller.

I was visiting a dystopian-type city and that my name was “Bee’s Burt”. When I told people my name, they would cower in fear and then Jessie from Pokémon appeared and started melting.

having IH with very intense dreams/nightmares is truly like living various different lives every night only to wake up and be shaken by reality being the same.
just woke up from sleeping for 24hr. at one point i was a squirrel and i killed a man who was riding in a weird moped but it was ultimately ok because i was a squirrel. also i later found out i had spider man abilities so i was spidersquirrel specifically in the loop area of chicago.

In the shadowed corridors of the 22nd century, Corporation Fog reigned supreme, its influence unseen but absolute. Beneath their polished facade, they orchestrated a global nightmare—an AI-powered dystopia where truth was a malleable illusion. The sun, once a beacon of hope, now flickered dimly through a veil of toxic smog, an eternal twilight enforced by Fog’s relentless exploitation of Earth’s resources.
Those who dared to seek the truth vanished, only to resurface as husks -empty shells tortured by experiments that fused flesh with machine in unspeakable ways. The echoes of their agony haunted the few who still resisted, but resistance was futile. Fog’s tendrils had entwined every facet of life, erasing history, rewriting reality, and silencing dissent with a calculated efficiency that made even the darkest tyrants of the past seem like mere amateurs.
In this world, there were no dreams, no memories, no dusk or dawn. Only Fog. ______________________________________________________________
About this track:
Often times I get tempted to add slightly more agressive elements to my mixes, but I'm always cautious not to ruin the overall mood. My first two albums were far from ambient, and their shadow still lurks I suppose :D Anyway, here's a track that starts very slow, and ominously progresses into something very reminiscant of my earlier work. Even if it's not exactly your cup of tea, let me know what you think in the comments. ______________________________________________________________
