Hi! I’m Key/Jess and I’ll be giving you a detailed explanation on how to spot scam accounts with commonly known examples such as what they do or what to look out for. All this information is meant to serve as a post that can be easily understood with information of my own and tips of my own. Any tips I give here is my own and any resemblance to other info is entirely a coincidence. I will make this post as accessible as possible for ease of readability so it is all plain text and no big letters beside the top so it has a title. This is mostly based around pet donation scammers but can be used to spot other scams as well.

What is a scam post on tumblr? A scam post is when someone is using information that isn’t their own and claiming they need money but are using a stolen story as theirs. Their situation, while it is real most of the time, is actually from another site and isn’t their situation. Usually a search of it will show any posts but this works best if you used Google or another search engine. However, this process isn’t always reliable. Scam posts are posts that are not truthful and deceive users into donating by having stolen content.

There are a few things to keep in mind that will help you figure out if an account contacting you is a scammer and usually, most of the time, you will find it is a legitimate person if you just kindly ask them for verification with any personal details removed. However, some blogs will never reply and may block you or ignore you because they don’t have any interest in proving who they are. It’s not uncommon for these scammers to wave away questions or turn off anon asks or asks off overall so no one can ask them anything. They may even turn off messages to further prevent any concerns being addressed and try to avoid suspicion.

One thing to keep in mind is how the account contacting you would have located you. Do you have a popular post that’s breached containment? Did you share a post that may be trending or fandom related? Any of these may lead to someone contacting you an asking you for donations be it through asks or direct messages. If your DMs are closed, the account may send you an ask telling you to message them first because they are desperate and then when contacted they ask you for like a thousand dollars on the spot. If you wonder why I suggest limiting your messages, it’s because people don’t like getting these and will mark it as spam. Scammers also do this to avoid public confrontation. But know not everyone doing this is scamming.

Another thing to keep in mind is how the ask was worded that the account sent you. Did it tell you to answer privately because they don’t want anyone calling them a spammer or because they would prefer you to message them instead? This is a very common type of scam ask and one that’s unfortunately extremely easy to get and see if you share trending/popular posts. Most often these are asks related to a sick pet by a blog that is only an hour old or a week old if you check the date of their pinned post. If they detect even the slighted doubt in your reply or question back? They block you.

Lastly, it doesn’t hurt to also ask questions to the blog who contacts you and see if they can provide clarification on anything you may be concerned over. This can be showing more images with personal info edited out or explaining any discrepancies in the info they supplied. For example, it could be how the images their using don’t match up with their information or how the story their using doesn’t seem to make sense because it’s not collaborating with any specific details they had already given. It may also be the supporting link they supply doesn’t match up the currency they request because the county doesn’t use the specific kind of currency they claim to need. More so if they don’t give any currency conversion rates. You can also check for backdated posts by turning on timestamps and checking the date of the first post if it’s easy to locate and seeing if it matched the reblog date in ‘other notes’. Some accounts will make posts look older in order to be deceptive and make the account look older then it really is.

Additionally, some scams are blogs who connect you saying they can help you but they want to give you a check and ask you to cash it or give them your banking information and phone number. These blogs are never legitimate people wanting to help you if your post has links that lead to ways to send support. Their are legitimate people who would help you that don’t ask for personal information using a blog that has no pfp, no bio, and has no posts. Treat these kind of blank accounts as bots. Report them and block them.

In closing, it is necessary to research the information you see in some posts and accounts to make sure it is a legitimate blog and not a scammer trying to make a quick buck. Not every blog you see asking for help is a scam account and generally most of them can easily provide proof their legitimate such as having several close friends, a blog that’s extremely old with tons of posts, or provides plenty of information in their posts that clearly explains their situation and shows the images they use is their own and don’t resort to a temper tantrum when questioned or when concerns are brought up.

So. ID apps. Do I use them in my classes? Yes, but only iNaturalist, because you get an additional layer of verification by actual human beings rather than just the initial algorithmic suggestions. And, more importantly, I stress again and again and again that apps are NOT to be the only tool you use, but need to be used in conjunction with field guides, online groups, and other tools, which we also discuss in class. This is especially true if you're planning to eat anything you pick.

I get incredibly frustrated by how ID apps are often touted as all you need to identify animals, plants, and fungi. (I've even seen them described as "a Master Naturalist in your pocket".) Yes, it's nice to have a convenient tool on your phone that allows you to take a picture of something and get a suggestion of what it is. But that's all it is--a suggestion. iNaturalist, Google Lens, PlantSnap, and other apps are incapable of critical thinking and observation skills. All they can do is take the visual, temporal, and location data that you give them and churn up suggestions based on whatever they already have in their databases.

Nature identification is a detail-oriented skill that takes time and practice to learn, and if you want to do it right there aren't any one-step shortcuts. Can an app potentially narrow down the possible species you're observing? Sure. But YOU still have to be the one to do the actual work in determining whether the species the app has suggested is the one you're looking at in person or not; you CANNOT just take the app at its word, because apps can often be wrong.

And this is even more the case when we're talking about edible mushrooms, many of which have lookalikes. (Trying to figure out which Little Brown Mushroom you have can be an exercise in frustration, to say the least.) While there are a lot of people getting into foraging who are willing to do the actual work needed to determine a given mushroom's species, there are unfortunately also those who just want quick and easy answers without a lot of effort, and those are the people who are going to go no further than the app's results. The articles that promote apps as the quick and easy answers these people want aren't helping, either.

By the way, I am ALWAYS happy to help people find resources to help them with identifying various beings in nature. I'm also fine with taking a look at photos and giving my perspective on what something may be (though, again, don't use me as your only source.) The Bunker

It all started with a simple reconnaissance mission. The planet B21-34K90 was an interesting discovery for the scientists responsible for the 'New Home' project. By probes and robots sent to the planet, the environment was considered suitable for human life and other survival conditions, despite having intrigued thinkers for several eras. The place was not in orbit around the Sun or a star, it revolved around another unstable gaseous planet, just another ball in a belt of rocks. But, the present data showed light, and its origin was a mystery that no one could understand. It took about five years of verification, as other planets were being investigated, as well as strange warnings from other intelligent life forms, even though those came from the culture of pure reason, they said: this planet is cursed.

It took another 10 years of preparation for the ships to be ready, the reasons were simple: discover the appropriate terrain, check the vegetation and fauna present, which turned out to be quite hostile, but they had already dealt with things like this in the past. Even with such data, superstitions were not found on that planet. It was a peaceful trip, the colonists went and hoped for a better life in this vast universe. The planet was small, so it would be easy to build communications between future buildings present in the new human home there.

There were no structures for the formation of tears, no voice to scream, thoughts bounced off the walls of the skull, because the brain had already flowed through the bony nostrils. Such thoughts were many things: regrets, anger, envy, sadness, they are stuck there trying to get away from past memories. Some let go more easily than others, finally becoming skeletons empty of any emotions or desires. 

They were empty souls, unable to die, condemned to wander forward in that dark forest with no escape. They continued walking as the curse ordered, alone. The sense of time was no longer necessary, feeling guilty was not necessary. Anger, hatred, envy, violence were no longer necessary. Finally, they stopped resisting, the bones scattered on the floor had no relief. Broken consciousness reduces past life memories to mere nothingness. They cleared the remaining thoughts until there was nothing left. Some began to be absorbed by the earth after being clean, those who remained still felt the footsteps of the unknown people trapped in that forest. By the mercy of past sins, they were freed. Being absorbed by the leaves and trees, as if in a sieve, they fell like raindrops into the void between the planes of existence.

They could become several individuals, from different species and cultures around the world. Free for life, but with responsibility still on our shoulders no matter where. They could have good lives, miserable lives, cruel lives, everything would depend on them. However, for these souls this was an unknown curse, because now, they would never be able to return home. The original house they had never seen, the house beyond the stars, the house they built was now covered in tons of rocks and vegetation. Forgotten. Entering the chapters of history like myths of sailors and soldiers.

Hey, been a bit since release. This is a pretty large update to Dead Signal, hence the 2.0 label. The 2.0 update finally introduces Nightmare difficulty, aims to reward player skill with currency that can be used to take more control of a run via the new upgrade shop, and adds some highly requested features. At the time of this update the game has also increased in price from $9.99 to $12.99.

Nightmare difficulty

A greater challenge awaits those who've unlocked Nightmare by completing Normal difficulty. The Breather(threat) has been added to this mode. Difficulty has been increased across the board for everything. Completing Nightmare will reveal a secret meme ending, honoring those who triumph over the challenge. But be warned the mode is unfair, you'll need to master the ins and outs before you could ever dream of earning the God Gamer achievement for beating Nightmare.

Upgrades

Now players earn currency for completing tasks. Currency can be spent in the DarkDrop shop, which sells software (downloaded) and hardware (needs to be picked up on the roof). These upgrades vary in strength based on their cost and either help combat threats or upgrade the camera system. Some of the most common run ending situations can be mostly safeguarded against with select items from the DarkDrop shop. Purchased hardware will show a tool tip on pick up that shares the installation location. Additionally when you get close to the placement location with the item in your inventory a pulsing yellow hologram of the device will appear to make installation easy.

Elevator override

A switch outside the elevator on the roof has been installed. If flipped it will greatly increase the elevator's speed, however there's a 1% chance to snap the cable and cause death on each traveled to floor. Use it when needed, then turn it off to keep your future elevator trips death free. You'll see the largest benefit on long elevator rides. With the override switch on you can go to the lowest floor and back to your apartment in less time than it'd take to only go to the lowest floor with the standard elevator speed.

New cameras and new camera events

Three cameras from a laundromat have been added to the camera feed. There are new events to be reported that fall under the original six report categories.

Hacking a device will offer a larger currency reward than reporting, but it can't be reported after. Likewise you can't report an electronic device, then hack it.

Reporting high value items for large currency rewards

A new character, Lotus has entered your messages and has an optional task for you to engage with. In the report tab you're now able to switch the recipient to either "The Shade" or "Lotus". Switching to Lotus and sending a valid high value report will result in a sizeable currency reward, but the event will no longer be reportable to The Shade for a quota point. Likewise if you report to The Shade first you'll no longer be able to report that same event to Lotus.

Signal booster starting equipment

There's a new device in your apartment that can greatly increase the speed of reports and camera malfunction repairs if placed in a hotspot. You can find it on a shelf next to the PC desk. Installing it in any of the apartment hallways is beneficial, though the better the spot, denoted by color(Green (strong), Yellow (moderate), Red (weak)), the more noticeable the difference. This device will change in status throughout the night, so moving it around will be ideal. Once you pick up the device from your apartment press [V] to toggle placement mode, then press [V] again while there is a hologram of the device to install it. You can pick the signal booster back up by pressing [F].

Localization

Translations have been made for the five most requested languages: Français(French), Deutsch(German), Polski(Polish), Português Brasileiro(Brazilian Portuguese), and Türkçe(Turkish). You can change the selected language on the main menu by opening the Options menu -> Game settings -> Language. In-game you can change the selected language by pressing [ESC] -> Game settings -> Language.

Steam Deck compatibility

As of this moment the review process is ongoing, but it's been tested and functions correctly on Steam Deck in this 2.0 build.

Ultrawide monitor support

Now larger screen resolutions (3440x1440 21:9) can play Dead Signal seamlessly. Those with super ultra widescreen resolutions (5120x1440 32:9) may not look the best, but are supported.

Balance Changes

Door lock state change (locked -> unlocked) can no longer be heard while near the PC. Players will need to purchase the upgrade to hear the beep and be notified of its change.
