Okay but can we talk about how beautiful of a title Empress Selene is? Like Emperor Kaito and Empress Selene??? That’s such a gorgeous pair of names. Also the fact that Cinder has a cool name (Cinder obvi) and a fancy royal name (Selene), is also dope. She gets the best of both worlds *que Hannah Montana

I think social media would really lean into that Hannah Montana idea, to the point that it's a running joke (John Cena level) that Selene and Cinder are completely different people. e.g:

Possible spoilers for dragons rising season 2 ahead

this is a theory based on new leaks, so it might contain spoilers

So we just got a first concrete leak of the Story for dragons rising season 2

So Ras is apparently trying to free the forbidden five, five evil and powerful elemental masters, who once ruled the world. This being a lego series and needing drama, he will likely succeed in this, which might mean, that the tournament in summer truly is another tournament of elements, only this time between two actual sides, instead of a kind of battle royale.

The forbidden five were first mentioned in the description of the garmadon comic coming out later this year, which ties into the plot of season 2. If i remember correctly, that comic plays at around the same time, as the serpent wars, so the forbidden five might have been banished sometime around then. So here is my listing, of who they might be:

Cinder:

maybe he was the elemental master of smoke at the time of the serpent wars, because if i recall we never saw that EM in any of the flashbacks. Maybe he was banished to another realm, possibly the Wyldness, and had his powers taken from him, which went on later to find a new host in Ash, who we met during the original tournament of elements. Maybe the Source dragon Energy Ras now has thanks to Jordana is going to be used to restore Cinder‘s powers and make him an elemental master again. This could be Ras plan for all pf the five, which is why he might need a lot of source dragon energy.

2. a past EM of metal

we never saw the EM of metal before Karlof, so maybe they were one of the forbidden five and were banished, with their powers finding a new host in Ninjago.

3. a past EM of shape

we never saw an EM of shape before Chamille, although granted, they could have looked however they wanted and we would have no way of knowing if the might have been the unknown elemental master, seen in the flashback, in which case they were not one of the forbidden five

this is the EM fro. the flashback i‘m talking about

4. past EM of mind

same story as the two above, with Mind possibly being more likely to have been the power of a ruler due to its power to, well, control the minds of others

and finally

5. the EM of an unknown element

now, while we do not know this Elemental masters element, we have actually seen both the master and their element being used. The only thing is, that this elemental master is dead. My theory is, that his element was some sort of energy, which he used to create incredibly advanced Technology. After he and the other forbidden five were defeated and banished, some of his loyal followers came with him into exile, into a realm of many dragons, where they used his power and technology to build themselves a kingdom. The many dragons, or the fact that he had children after being banished, might have meant that his power did not find it‘s way back to ninjago, instead remaining in his older twin daughter and heir to his throne. The elemental masters name?

Levo, emperor of imperium and father of Zeatrix and Beatrix Vespasian-Orus, the former of whom inherited his powers

Did you have any more headcanons for ways that cinder was affected by Adris abuse for your fic “human”?

TW for talks of neglect, and physical and emotional abuse by a guardian towards a minor.

So the ones I mention in that fic are:

Cinder waking up in the middle of the night and wandering around/going to the garage to fix things because she can't go back to sleep. The reason she struggles going back to sleep is because Adri would make her get up an hour before dawn so Cinder could get to the market right as it was opening. Obviously, Cinder wouldn't have been allowed to go back to sleep because she needed to work. The only reason she didn't have this habit during the revolution is because they were constantly on high alert and running on low sleep.

Cinder has a difficult time accepting compliments she doesn't believe she earned. More specifically compliments about her being kind, generous, beautiful, intelligent, and the like.

Cinder outright refuses to ask for help. Often when she asked for help from Adri, she'd get punished. Adri locked Cinder in her bedroom for a day or two at a time without food. When she was particularly cruel, Adri would take away the cot Cinder slept on along with the single blanket and pillow Cinder had.

That fic covers a lot of the repercussions of Adri's abuse I believe Cinder would have, but I can think of a few more I didn't mention.

Loud noises would bother her. Cinder isn't the type that would have a panic attack, but I think she'd wince at unexpected loud sounds and would have trouble calming her heartbeat for a few minutes afterward.

Sudden movements frequently make her flinch. This is both due to Adri's abuse (which I talked about here in another ask) and PTSD from the revolution.

She keeps stashes of non-perishable food in places she's frequently at. This is very common with abuse victims (and poorer people in general) who've suffered food scarcity. In the back of her mind, she still thinks that food could be taken away from her at any moment--even though logically she knows she's an empress with a full kitchen staff at her disposal.

RWBY Fanfic Recommendation List

Fics that have really struck me, vaguely organized by ship and/or topic.

Bumbleby (Blake x Yang)

first off, basically anything by pugoata. She's the goddess-empress of the Bees. I'm gonna give particular props to Banshee, as it was the first longer fic and AU that I read, and it really opened up my mind to what fanfic could be.

You're a Mountain, Full of Glory - a ski/snowboard with amazing characterization and a closing scene that will live rent-free in my head forever, in a good way.

They Can't Steal the Love You're Born to Find - childhood soulmates repeatedly torn apart and reconnecting, with courtroom drama. One of the most angst-ridden Bee fics I've ever read.

Fucking In Love - pornstar AU that gets right to the sex and slow burns the romance. Hot as hell while also full of tenderness and pining.

Midnight Menagerie - exotic dancer, kinda-cyberpunk dystopia AU. Edges you forever with the sex, earns all the angst tags, and we are majorly trusting @kaelidascope when she promises an amazing happy ending.

Bite Me Like You Love Me - one of the hottest Bee smutfics I've ever read.

You and Me - Blake discovers she's pregnant the day Yang goes MIA on a mission and struggles through being a single mother teaching their child about her amazing other mom. Short, happy ending, amazingly sweet.

WhiteRose (Ruby x Weiss)

The Foxtrot - Ruby and Weiss repair their broken lives after the war. It's one of the most popular RWBY fics of all time for a reason.

Can You See My Strings?/Deja Vu - premium mentally ill Weiss escapes from child abuse angst, with a happy ending if you read the sequel.

But Your Voice Used to Be Mine - Weiss escapes abuse to join RBY's punk band whose smash hit she inspired.

Just One Cigarette - Ruby and Weiss have a little meetup roleplay and it's really good.

Faunus Weiss (generally major themes of struggling with internal and external racism)

Craving the Sky - Weiss has painfully concealed her faunus heritage while she tries to earn her father's love. The support of her team, and the love of Blake and Yang (BeesSchnees) help her soar on her own.

Black Swan Theory - faunus Weiss struggles to recover from child abuse and navigate a deeply racist society while building a relationship with Pyrrha (Schneekos).

Clipped Wings - secret faunus Weiss, dealing with racism and abuse from Jacques, this time slow burning towards Pollination.

Villainesses

Melting Glace - Cinder and Neo find love, and no redemption, in the trauma of failing to destroy Beacon. Will make you cheer for them to win by the end.

Rise from the Ashes - Cinder has a Vader moment and saves Ruby from Salem, and Ruby's pure heart helps her heal, and their adversarial relationship turn to affection. Peak RWBY enemies-to-lovers.

Odds & Ends

The Bermuda Triangle - great modern AU BeesSchnees that gets filthy hot at the end.

Midnight Rose - Summer rescues and adopts Cinder out of Atlas. Their relationship, and Cinder coming to love the Xiao Long-Rose family, is beautifully depicted. Still very much ongoing (no ships as of yet).

Fallen Maiden - Jaune dies protecting Pyrrha at Beacon, and the Fall Maiden power remains split. Will Pyrrha's bloody crusade of vengeance consume her? Or, 'Pyrrha goes full Magneto and fucks Cinder up'.

What's In A Name? - Winter and May grow up together, struggling to cope with their feelings for each other against the background of the Atlas aristocracy.

Red Sky at Night - This excellently-composed fic has a hacked Penny as the primary antagonist of the Beacon arc and builds it to Nuts & Dolts. It captures both Penny's horror at being controlled in her own body and RWBY's fear in fighting a seemingly unstoppable enemy, almost like Terminator vibes, and ultimately takes it to a very sweet relationship.

Linked In Life and Love - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this one. I really, really love the first act, where Team RWBY sees Blake suffering terribly through a surprise heat cycle and decides that they will all "help" her with it. It's sweet and tender and feels legit for them. I'm not a huge fan of where all the series has gone since, but I would invite anyone to judge that for themselves.

can we fucking talk about how kai knew cinder would not be ready to accept his marriage proposal after she was crowned queen? so instead he did the most-kai-thing-possible and proposed to her with her fucking foot and instead offered her dance lessons and a promise that she would one day consider being the empress of the commonwealth, his empress? but when cinder jokes with him and says that she was expecting a ring, he immediately says that there are some nice jewelry stores on luna? god i love him and his ability to understand that cinder would not be ready and waited until she was

I've seen people argue that Cinder choosing to become the empress of the Eastern Commonwealth when she explicitly states that she doesn't want to be royalty is out-of-character. I counter argue that that is a oversimplification of her personal insecurities and a misreading of her character arc.

Cinder's key reasons for not wanting to be royalty are 1. She doesn't want to fail people. 2. She desires anonymity, and 3. She doesn't believe that she will be accepted by others--"She had seen the prejudices of the people in the Commonwealth. Something told her that they wouldn't be as accepting of her as a ruler. She wasn't even sure she wanted to be empress. She was still getting used to the idea of being a princess."

Cinder is naturally afraid of the responsibility she would have to bear as a leader. However that does not translate to her being inactive. Cinder is keenly interested in social justice. She encourages Iko to petition the government to initiate change for androids in the very first chapters we meet her. She takes an active part in the revolution, not just for the preservation of her own life, but because she genuinely cares about the citizens of Luna. This is affirmed by how Cinder prefers to be called a revolutionary over a princess--her politics mean more to her than her lineage. Once crowned queen of Luna, she is tireless in enacting changes to the country. If she truly hated being in this position as queen, she would have taken a much more passive stance and allowed the thaumaturges to manage the kingdom. In Wires and Nerve she demonstrates how deeply she cares about the welfare of her people and fights against threats to her country personally even when she is strongly encouraged against it. And then, once she abdicates her throne, she becomes an ambassador to facilitate peaceful relations between Earth and Luna. Released from her birthright, she could have resumed life as a mechanic, still hassled by paparazzi, but no longer held accountable for political peace. But Cinder chooses to stay a politician because she has always genuinely cared about using her power to help others. She represents the powerless as having been that once herself.

Cinder desires a life without public scrutiny. But where does this originate? This desire is an extension of Adri's abuse. Because she was mocked for being cyborg, she wished to hide from people in general so they do not uncover her secret. But she sacrifices this luxury when she decides to go to the ball and tell Kai of Levana's plot. Later, she comes to accept that--born into fame--she would never enjoy a life of anonymity.

Connected with her insecurity as a cyborg, Cinder fears that she will not be accepted by others. She believes this as a byproduct of the discrimination she faced from fellow shopkeepers in New Beijing Market such as Chang Sacha. However Kai makes it clear that the people of the Commonwealth have come to appreciate her, even wanting to make a "statue [of her] where [her] booth used to be at the market" and "action figures" of her. Although she will always have critics, Cinder is generally liked by Earthens and praised by them for abdicating her throne, promising an end to Lunar tyranny.

Kai is right when he tells her that she "would make a great leader" even when she "never wanted to be queen." Why? Because her wants and her abilities are different. The 16-year-old Cinder we first meet opposes her birthright as queen because she has the weight of the universe placed on her shoulders with just one sentence. She's an unloved, inexperienced teenager--of course she's more than hesitant! However she grows to embrace this fundamental part of herself, even having "pride" to declare that she is "the rightful heir!" Cinder becomes loved and becomes experienced. For her to remain the same girl in the prison cell, terrified by the prospect of being a princess would be a stagnation of her character development. It may not be the life she chose, but it is all the same the life that she accepts.

When Kai asks her to consider becoming the empress in the future, Cinder agrees and takes "in the first full breath she'd taken in days." We don't see a girl paralyzed with fear or regret. Rather, she feels relief because she can envision this prospect and not be crushed by it. And finally, when Kai proposes, she excitedly looks forward to these things: "She would be Kai's wife. She would be the Commonwealth's empress. And she had every intention of being blissfully happy for ever, ever after." Cinder's vision for happiness welcomes being the empress despite the hardships attached to it, and she is the most motivated, willing and hard-working candidate for the position.
