I think Bruce Wayne is a loving parent, but not a good one. He is a psychologically tormented person who never got over his trauma or developed any healthy coping mechanisms but he just keeps ending up with them and doesn’t really know what to do with the kids except what has always ‘worked for him’?
Like Dick’s parents die right in front of him and Bruce is just “hey kid, my parents died in front of me too. And you know what helped me? Punching bad guys.”
And Jason? He finds this kid stealing his tires and he’s not afraid of Batman. He doesn’t seem afraid of anything. He’s got a big heart and cares a lot about people, but no one cares about him. But he’s got a strong sense of justice So Bruce looks at the kid and goes, “hey kid, you seem lost. You know what helps me when I’m feeling lost? Punching bad guys.”
With tim it’s a little more complicated. Bc this kid showed up at his front door and put him in a corner (tim saved him) and Bruce went, “hey kid, you seem pretty good at this. I do encourage you to find a different extracurricular activity… but yes, you can punch bad guys with me.”
And with Damian it’s even more complicated but in simplest terms Bruce and Dick look at Damian and go, “hey kid, you seem like you have some issues and a weird moral compass. Do you know what makes me feel better? Punching bad guys.”
Like shit bruce I’m no expert but maybe some talk therapy or grief counselling might help. you cant just "punch bad guys to cope with your feelings" your way out of this one

smoke session with nicho
warnings and content : afab fem reader, soft dom nicholas, switchy sub afab fem reader, weed consumption, use of “good girl” and “sir”, thigh riding, handjob, unprotected sex (don't do that lol), creampie, fingering, oral (reader receiving), and cum eating
word count: ~4k
✧*。✧*。✧*。
Ever since Nicholas found out that you smoked weed he’s been dropping hints about wanting to smoke with you every time you hang out. Today, after a long day of classes, and finally a weekend of nothing in particular planned you decide to finally bite and ask him over.
While going to grab your stash and pink rolling paper from your desk drawer you hear your phone ping and light up with a “here :p” text from Nicho.
“Hey!” He greets with that cheeky little grin of his, leaning down to give you a quick hug before you step aside and let him into your apartment.
It’s small, nothing too crazy since you’re living on your own, and a little dingy appliances wise but you were lucky enough to get cheap rent from a landlord who didn’t care if you stank up the hallway a few times a week with your solo “decompression time” so you didn’t plan on moving anytime soon. Nicho kicks off his shoes at the door before settling himself on your couch and and dropping the plastic shopping bag you just realized he’s holding on the coffee table in front of him.
“What did ya bring?”
“Snacks! I thought it was fair since you’re hosting, and providing, and from the looks of it, rolling.” he says gesturing to the rollers box in your hand while taking out a variety of chips and drinks and instant ramen cups from the bag.
“Damn, well aren’t you a good smoking buddy!” You smile, and sit next to him on the couch, gently pushing some of the bag contents out of your way to have space to get to work.
“I’ve never rolled my own before.” he suddenly admits, coming to sit a bit closer to you and watch while you put the weed pellets in the grinder.
“It’s not that hard for real, just takes some practice to get it right. I only started rolling my own like…. I dunno a little over a year ago now? Had to. I live alone now, obviously, so I don’t have anyone to do it for me.” you shrug, spilling the crushed weed into a prepped pink paper, quickly and carefully and rolling it like the expert you are. Nicholas whistles in awe.
“You’re good! Your paper’s cute too.” He says nodding in approval. You thank him and get to work rolling a second joint for yourself while he settles back on the couch and flicks the lighter on. “You wanna watch something?”
“Sure, I’m in the middle of rewatching New Girl if that’s fine?”
“I haven’t seen it but that’s cool, you quote it a lot so I know it’s funny.” He says shooting you a smile which you return and sit back next to him, shoulder to shoulder.
You turn your head to him so he can light your joint with the lighter he’s already got held up and lit for you and for a second your eyes meet from across the flame before you take a drag and turn your head forward to blow it out.
You and Nicho…. are friends you guess. Always ending up at the same functions and hanging out together cause you really do get along well. He’s funny, and easy going, and always asking cutely inquisitive questions about you. You’ve grown fond of him, though you have never hung out one on one, despite wanting to more and more as of late.
However, part of why you have been semi ignoring his hints to smoke together is for two very important reasons. One: You have been developing a bit of a massive crush on him for a few weeks now. You’re not sure what changed really. You’ve always found him attractive and he’s always been pretty comfortable to be around, but you noticed a shift in his gaze at you last time him, Fuma, Ej and you went out into town together. Maybe it was just the drinks or the lighting but you could’ve sworn he looked at you like he was going to try to kiss you that night. Doesn’t help that he decided to choose that day to break the touch barrier with you and has been more comfortable initiating it. Even now, sitting next to you, he’s absent mindedly drumming his fingers on your knee. Course he hasn’t looked at you like that since, but you wonder if he will again today. Since he’ll be intoxicated again. And you wonder if he’ll actually act on it this time now that you’re alone. Not just wonder. Hope. Which brings you to reason number two. Something about weed makes you extra horny. You genuinely have no idea what it is but every single time you’ve smoked with someone that you were attracted to you ended up hooking up. It lowers your defenses that you have so carefully put up so as not to bother or make anyone uncomfortable, while also completely taking away your filter. Both mental and verbal. That would normally stop you from saying or doing anything suggestive in mixed company.
Yet… you’ve been single for at least six months now, you have this place all to yourself, and your annoyingly attractive and maybe flirtatious friend practically begged you to smoke with him. Who were you to say no when all the variables were quite nicely in place?
You knew your high was starting to hit when you found yourself giggling at jokes you’ve long since stopped laughing at in your rewatches since you knew they were coming, how the light of the Tv screen seemed shaper and more hard to ignore than before, and how you were oh so very aware of Nicho’s hand on your knee which has now switched from drumming to drawing small unrecognizable shapes on your knee and lower thigh. You feel yourself start to take shallower breaths as a feeling starts to grow in your stomach and you feel your face start to heat up a little.
“You okay?” You hear Nicho’s voice ask, and you slowly turn to meet his piercing gaze from next to you. The Look is back. Here we go…
“Mmm? No yeah I’m… I’m fine why?”
“You’re breathing weird and you got all tense suddenly, thought you were about to panic or something.” he continues, sounding genuinely concerned but you have a hard time focusing on that with the way you notice his eyes land on your lips for a beat before dropping all the way to your thigh as he taps it. “Your leg flexed up.”
“Did it?”
“Yeah… You sure you’re fine?” He asks again, tilting his head a little and making the effect of his gaze all the more enticing.
“I’m sure. You just- I mean I don’t know. Weed makes me. Feel weird. Sometimes. It’s nothing don’t worry about it.”
“I just what?”
“What?”
“I just what? You started to say something and then bullshit your way out of it. I just what?”
“You… I don’t know you make me nervous I guess. And your hand feels nice on my knee- or whatever.” Your mutter quickly, refusing to meet his eyes, but you can hear the smile in his voice when he replies.
“Oh?”
“I guess.”
“You’re cute when you’re nervous, by the way.”
“What?” You turn to him this time, blinking in surprise. You didn’t expect him to flirt so readily, especially when your own flirting was so awkward and indirect but he just smiles at you.
“I saaaaid”, he leans towards you a bit, deliberately staring at your lips now, as his hand slides up your thigh a bit more, making your breath catch in anticipation. “You’re cute when you’re nervous.” he repeats breaking his gaze with your lips to lean back and take a hit from his joint. You let out a small breath you didn’t realize you were holding.
“Not you teasing me…”
“Am I?” he asks, blowing the smoke out to the side.
“Leaning in like that like you’re gonna kiss me and then… not.” You take a hit of your own joint now, a little annoyed with how easily you’re giving away your feelings to him after having held back from being so direct for weeks.
“Do you want me to kiss you?”
“Don’t ask stupid questions.” You breathe out, rolling your eyes at him.
“Won’t happen again, promise.” he responds, smiling that annoyingly charming smile again and leaning towards you once more.
Your heart races as he finally closes the gap between you, and the kiss is so soft and disarming you almost completely loose your senses and drop the still lit joint you hold between your fingers. He pulls back and leans away from you to put out the light on his and set it on the coffee table before swiftly pulling you onto his lap. You blink down at him, reaction time slowed by the weed filling your brain and tilt your head in question.
“Always thought you’d look pretty looking down at me. Wanted to test the theory out.” He says, cupping your face with his hand and brushing his thumb across your bottom lip while he does. Your breath catches in your throat and you let out a small “oh.” in response. To which he giggles. His giggles are adorable to be frank. Just as soft and disarming as the kiss. He then takes the joint from between your fingers and relights it, holding it to his lips and not breaking eye contact with you as he takes a long drag.
He then beckons to you with a finger and you lean forward a little with your mouth open a bit, catching his drift already. He puckers his lips to blow smoke at you which you inhale greedily with your eyes fluttering shut. His lips meet yours before you’re able to breathe out again, making your head woozy with lust, weed, and lack of oxygen but it feels so… so good. So much so that when he breaks the kiss to start kissing you along your jaw and down your neck while running his hand along your thigh you let out a small moan.
“Feel good, baby?”
Baby the sudden nickname would’ve been enough to make you moan again on its own, but then he started to bite and lick at the skin on your collar bones that are exposed due to your tank top.
“Fuck, Nicho…” you half moan half sigh out in response as his hand moves up under your shirt to cups and squeezes your breast while you run one hand through his hair and grip one of his biceps with the other to feel how they flex under your touch while he touches you over your bra.
“I’ll take that as a yes…” he mutters, and you can feel his proud little smirk against your chest.
He finally moves back just enough to slip your tank top up over your head and you take the opportunity to help him out of his black t-shirt so you can finally see, and more importantly feel, his muscled chest. You two had been friends long enough to have been in a few situations like pool parties and such in which you had seen him without a shirt on. You’d be lying if you said the thought of how his pretty toned abs would feel under your fingers didn’t cross your mind when you saw them flexed and shimmering with water under the soft glow of moon and porch light at your friend’s house. You never thought you’d have the chance but here you are now, perched on his lap as he takes hits from your joint and looks at you hungrily while you run your hands up and down his chest, and feel him getting hard already underneath you.
“You’re so pretty.” You softly admit, meeting his eyes, “Been noticing it for a while but… god you’re so pretty.” You repeat running your hands back up to clasp behind his neck. You smile to yourself noticing his ears turn pink and his gaze get a little less confident, clearly embarrassed by your sudden compliment but from the way you feel his dick twitch in his pants under you, you know he enjoyed every second of it.
“Could say the same to you.”
“Then do it.” you giggle down at him, semi absent mindedly starting to grind down into him a little.
“You’re really pretty.” he says his voice a little shakier than before as your movements become a bit more pronounced. Still, his gaze darkens a bit as he takes another drag and blows it out slow to the side this time before facing you again. “Open your mouth, pretty.” He softly demands, and instinctively you do. He then brings the joint to your lips and you close your lips around it, just like before. “Breathe.” and you do, still subtly grinding into him while his free hand snakes around your back and deftly unclips your bra. “Blow for me, baby.” he instructs after moving the joint from your lips and leaning forward to catch the smoke while you blow, closing the gap before you can breathe in again to kiss you for a moment and then breaking it again. “You follow orders well.” he hums kissing down your chest again.
“I like to do what I’m told.” you shamelessly admit and he chuckles before closing his lips around your nipple while his hand plays with the other.
“Keep being a good girl for me and I’ll make it worth your time.” he says while moving to your other breast, you can’t help but moan in response, the weed making your ability to stay quiet fly out the window. “Do you want that?”
“Mmhmm.” you nod, closing your eyes and grinding shamelessly against him. You’re certain there’s a wet patch growing on his thigh now, from your wetness leaking from your needy cunt, through your underwear and thin little shorts, and onto his dark gray sweatpants.
“Use your words, baby.” he instructs. Pulling away from you to finish off the joint and absentmindedly toss the roach to the coffee table while looking at you with those pretty piercing eyes of his. He leans back, hands stilling your hips while he waits for you to speak, blowing out the smoke stored in his mouth and you quickly lean forward to catch it in yours before it dissipates.
“Please, Nicho… quit teasing and fuck me already.” You feign annoyance and reply.
“Well since you asked so nicely.” he jokes meeting your lips again, but with a more hungry and deeper kiss. His tongue tangling with yours and roaming your mouth while you both pant and moan a bit into each other. You both taste of nothing but weed and desire but you swear you are on cloud 9 from his kiss alone. He, tragically, breaks it again. “Off.” he orders, slightly tugging your shorts and underwear down by the waist band. You stand quickly to pull them all the way off and leave them at your feet as he remains seated and does the same with his boxers and sweatpants, his dick springing to attention and already taught and leaking. Your thighs clench on instinct at the sight of it, feeling yourself somehow get even wetter. It’s perfect, not too big but not disappointingly small either, and the kind of thickness you know is gonna feel incredible stretching you out. “Sit. Bring the other joint with you.” he orders again.
“Yes sir.” You half joke but when you catch his eye after settling back on his thigh, you notice his expression change. “Oh you liked that, didn’t you, pretty boy?”
“Maybe. Do it again.”
“Why should I? Haven’t been given an order.”
“Oh so you’re a brat now?” he asks, his eyebrows are knit in annoyance but his voice is tinged in amusement and his lips almost twitch into a smile.
“Maybe…” you giggle moving forward to kiss him but he stops you with a finger to your lips.
“Gimmie the joint. While we smoke, I need you to jerk me off while you ride my thigh. You don’t get to feel how good im gonna fuck you until you’ve made yourself cum, understood?”
“…Yes sir.”
“Good girl.” he smirks, before putting the joint between his pretty lips and taking a drag while you start to get to work.
You let a thread of spit fall from your mouth onto his dick to help your hand move up and down it, gathering his precum from the tip and pinching it on the way down making him shudder out a breath while he exhales smoke and holds the joint to your lips. You continue like this, just as before but far more stimulating for the both of you. Him passing the joint between the two of you and instructing you on when to open, breathe, and blow. You getting higher and more turned on by the second while his free hand roams your body. Sometimes guiding your hips against his thigh, which he intermittently flexes and releases to make you whimper and moan for him, or grabbing and kneading at your breasts or ass. It was intoxicating, the feeling of it all coupled with his soft but demanding voice telling you what to do, and you were already so wet and turned on that it didn’t take long for you to find yourself gasping and moaning as you came softly all over his thigh.
“Such a good girl for me.” Nicho coos from below you as you come to a stop, your hand stilling on his cock which, shockingly has yet to come undone. Nicho lifts you off his lap and repositions you so you’re laying back on the couch while you catch your breath. He brings one leg up to a bend against your chest while he leans down to kiss you, letting his cock rub lazily against your folds and making you shiver as your pussy begins to clench around nothing, hungry for what’s to come. “You ready?”
“Yes, sir.” you breathe out in response and he immediately snakes a hand between the two of you to guide himself inside your needy cunt. You both gasp as he easily slides all the way into you, filling you up completely, before he slowly begins to move.
Nicholas is a vision above you. Jaw dropped, eyes shut tight, and brows furrowed as he rolls his hips into you at a steady rhythm, not bothering to hold back his whines and moans unlike most guys you’d been with before. His hair sticks to his forehead a bit from the sweat glistening on it and you look down to see how his abs tense and relax as he thrusts into you. You start to move to match his pace, grinding down to meet him while you shamelessly stare up at him in awe and join his chorus of moans.
“Fuck you feel so good, pretty. So so good. Fuck.” he manages to say between moans, before kissing you again and quickly moving to bite and suck on your nipples, making your moans louder and back start to arch a little. “You sound so pretty for me too, baby. Keep moaning like that and I’m gonna cum.” he warns, fucking into you deeper and faster while his tongue bites and swirls around your nipples interchangeably, which prompts your back to arch more and your lewd chorus of moans and skin slapping against skin grows louder.
“F-fuck Nicho you feel so good. You fill me up so good pretty boy.” you moan, raking your nails across his back while he continues to devour your neck and chest in a way you’re certain will leave lots of bruises and he moans against your chest. “Nicho I’m close again, please. I’m so close.”
“Yeah? Fuck, baby me too.” he says snaking a hand between you to rub your clit in tight fast circles making you scream out in pleasure as the knot in your stomach threatens to snap. “Where do you want me to cum pretty?” he grunts, clearly fighting his hardest to not cum too soon.
“Inside. Fucking fill me up, pleas god. I want you to-“ he cuts you off with a hungry kiss and a groan, still working your clit, and it’s enough to make you fall apart. You clench around his cock, moaning into his mouth more than kissing it, and soon after he does the same. Releasing and painting your insides with his cum. But he doesn’t stop fucking into you, and you’re barely able to ride out the high of your first orgasm as you feel the next one starting to build up again, his dick still hard inside you.
“Wait I wanna taste you. Is that okay?” He asks, slowing his thrusts to an agonizing pace while he waits for you to respond.
“God yes. Please yes.” you gasp out. He kisses you one last time before removing his cock from your pussy, both of your cum spilling out of you leaving you feeling empty but not for long. He quickly lowers himself down between your thighs and glances up at you as he licks up from your dripping cunt to your clit and swallows the mix of your juices while making eye contact with you and smiling, making your eyes roll back in pleasure. “Fuuuuuck Nicho ohmygod!”
Nicholas’s lips close around your sensitive clit, sucking on it for a bit before his tongue ventures to thrust slowly in and out of your cunt. He moves his head back and forth and up and down, rubbing his nose against your clit while his tongue fucks into you. You feel yourself getting close again already as he starts to groan and move faster, lips attaching to your clit again when he fucks two fingers into you and you instinctively grab hold of his hair to stable yourself. The weed and pleasure mixing to make you feel like if you don’t hold on to him you’d float away for sure. One of Nicho’s hands slides up your stomach to your breast while he continues eating you out ferociously, barely pausing to take breaths and whisper praises to you while you moan out his name. It’s not until your legs shake and clench around him do you realize you’re cumming again, the pleasure having been so overwhelming you lost yourself in it a bit until you’re dragged back down to earth when it all stops and he removes himself from between your legs to kiss you again. You can taste yourself and him on his lips and tongue and you’re so hazy and content that you find yourself moaning into his mouth again before he breaks the kiss to lay his head on your chest and look you in the eye.
“That was… really good. Been waiting to do that for a while…” He admits grinning shyly, his lips and chin still glistening with your wetness and spit.
“Oh yeah?” You half ask half tease, running your hands softly through his hair making his eyes flutter closed as he hums in affirmation. “…Honestly me too.” you finally admit.
“Oh, I know.” He giggles, looking up at you again and making your face flash hot and you look away shyly as if you hadn’t been moaning his name moments before.
“That obvious, huh?”
“Yeah, but it’s okay. I thought it was cute how you tried to hide how flustered you got whenever we touched. Made me wanna do it more.” he admits, standing up. “You wanna go shower, change into something else, and eat something? You must be starving.” He suggests pulling you up off the couch and into his arms, lazily resting his hands on your hips and leaning down to kiss you softly a few times before you could answer.
“Sure… you wanna join me?”
“Oh absolutely.” he grins, kissing you again before you lead him off to your bathroom with a giggle.

hey pookiee, can you tell us how marine!rafe & reader met?
YES. yes i can love. got a tad bit carried away 🙂↕️ ANDDDDD lets get into this marine!rafe lore:
not proofread so plz excuse errors yall lmfao
first thing, both rafe and reader went to kildare county hs. you were good friends with kie, and dabbled in the same circle sometimes, often running into rafe during parties they all went to, or when sarah invited you & kie over to tanny hill.
and actually lets back up even more bcs - marine!rafe is not a kook. if anything hes a mutt like kie. ward had humble beginnings yk, being the son of a clue collar man - his father, who took over cameron construction co from HIS father. they mostly did framework, structural work, and remodeling for businesses and houses on the cut but the work was amazing quality so they were a very quickly growing name. still, ward grew up on the cut and started raising the kids there.
but fast forward, ward eventually takes over and decides to expand into all interior work, all exterior work, decks & patios, custom woodwork, honestly whatever you can think of - but advertised to the rich tourists and families on figure 8 and stuff. they started RAKING in cash from that expansion and ward decided to build a house on figure 8 like rose always wanted - tanny hill!
NOW, i think you and rafe essentially had a slow burn situation. y'all would sit and talk the whole night at bonfire parties, barely putting a dent in your drinks. for some reason your class schedules were always in synch, leisurely walking each other to the next one, rafe trying to make you laugh every the whole way. y'all would accidentally rendezvous in the kitchen while at you were hanging at tanny hill, sarah and kie rolling their eyes at the giggles carrying all the way into her room.
rafe quickly developed a very intense crush, thanking whatever power made your schedules 95% the same, spending the rest of his time watching you from afar. he just never worked up the courage to act, convinced you'd never be as interested in a regular dude like him. his daily routine consisted of class, then work with his dad until the evening, after that probably linking up with barry or john b & friends™ for a beer. he felt like he had nothing to offer you besides his expert ability to fix just about anything, some wildflowers he keeps in his truck specifically because they remind you of him, and every last piece of of his heart.
chile.. little did he know you were just as in love. just a little self conscious is all. mkay maybe a lot? look, he already had a full sleeve and a half by junior year... not to mention his pierced ears, and the sexiest working man hands you'd ever seen. he BEEN fine, you just knew he was experienced and stuff, definitely not interested in a regular girl like you. so you watched him from afar... you could identify the rumble of his truck from at least a few miles away
he would come to visit you when you got your first job at the wreck. posting up at the bar, pretending to do homework, or catching up with john b & friends™. thats kind of when you started to catch what he was throwin down. the alcohol available loosened him up a lil bit, almost getting you fired from how much y'all would talk.
from behind the bar you had a front row seat to the way he looked at you, feeling hot like you were shoved under a spotlight. that didn't stop him from getting even closer though, behind the bar helping you clean up by the end of the night. your hands would brush, too focused on the dishes, and it was electric - so burning hot you both had to take a beat before getting back to it.
but by the time senior homecoming came around you had fully blossomed, more and more confident by the day, even finer by the hour. so even though you scared the hell out of him, he was willing to shoot his shot thinly veiled by asking you to the event. he planned and planned, wanting to make it so special for you - he was gonna cover his truck bed in your wildflowers and candles, back it up to the beach at sunset, complete with a basket of your favorite snacks and a lengthy heartfelt note asking you to be his date and confessing his feelings...
just his luck though - as quickly as could blurt out his idea to sarah and kie, they awkwardly informed him that some fucker beat him to it. showed up at the wreck after school to ask you with no flowers and a delivery like asking for the math homework. he was lowkey devastated. feeling defeated after the glimmer of hope he let himself have. even thought he did feel the slighest bit better after kie & sarah let it slip that you were NOT into dude, and were less than thrilled that you couldn't go with your girls.
he busies himself with work on homecoming night, selfishly making a quick trip to the island club - where he knew homecoming was in full swing - to grab some plans for their new outdoor edition.... and see if he could check on you. pulls up in his truck to the sight of you perched on the from steps, looking unmoved by the highly anticipated event.
he strolls over to take a seat next to you, softly admitting how beautiful you look. and before you know it you're in the passenger seat of his F-150 backing up to the beach - just in time for the last breathtaking swatch of sunset. he opens your door and carries you around to the bed, not wanting your dress to "get all dirty and stuff".
you tell him about how horrible your fake date was, and he laughs, calling the dude a dipshit and sheepishly confessing that he might've wanted to ask you, fully expecting you to chuckle back. but to his surprise you turn to him and smile, softly admitting how much more you would've enjoyed that. y'all have ur first kiss in that truck bed, snuggled up watching the sunset, just talking like you always do
i reckon from that moment on y'all were inseparable..... at least until you went off to college at the end of the summer. it was tragic, lots of crying. he felt like he lost the only part of him that mattered - so he told ward he was joining the army.
he told you he was leaving of course but it was a somber conversation - y'all already knowing how little contact was in the future for you both. y'all were so young, so much life a ahead of you - promising that if fate ever brought you both back together you'd listen. and sure enough, what felt like a lifetime later, it did.
he'd been back home on leave, same ol' same ol', long days with his dad at the construction company. he was sitting at the bar at the wreck one evening when that same electric feeling hit him like a right hook. you walked in with kie & his sister, first day back home after graduating, doing some much needed catching up.
you told the girls to go on, and sat next to him, sparking up a conversation like y'all were back in highschool. he told you he was leaving on deployment soon so the two of you spent as much time as you could together before he left, no acknowledgement of the tension between you both. he left feeling better than he had in long time, rejuvenated by the time he spent with you even if y'all weren't together.
last thing he thought he'd see when he touched back down at fort bragg, was you in that damn sundress, clutching two miller lites, aviators perched on your cute nose. thats when he knew there was no more ignoring this.

CL16 | Strategy to Your Heart
Summary: Ferrari hasn’t been doing well in the races lately, and according to Charles, there's only one person to blame for the bad strategies: you.
Charles Leclerc x colleague!Reader (enemies to lovers)
WC: 4.3K
Warnings: curse words, slightly misogynistic
Masterlist
Charles stormed into the garage, his eyes blazing with anger. His race had ended disastrously, again, and there was only one person to blame. As his race engineer, you were responsible for his strategy, which lately, had been lacking significantly and he despised you for it. The car was finally improving, yet he couldn’t seem to win a race. Simply because his race engineer managed to fuck up every time.
“What the hell were you thinking?” he shouted, his voice echoing off the walls. “Are you trying to sabotage me?”
You looked up in surprise as he approached you. Charles' anger was clear as day as he got in your face, making your hands shake from anxiety and your blood run cold. Your expression hardened as the accusation settled, a glare replacing the shock in your eyes. You opened your mouth to explain, to say something – to calm him down, but he cut you off.
“I don’t need your excuses! You clearly don’t know what you’re doing!” He yelled. The look on his face, and the posture of his body – which was much taller than yours – were intimidating. Never mind his unrelenting glare and the finger he pointed in your face before storming off to his driver's room.
His insult stung deeply. You understood that he was upset at how the race went, but he could’ve reacted differently. He just humiliated you publicly, in front of all your colleagues; he didn’t even let you get a word in edgewise. You could feel the anger bubbling up inside you at his behaviour. How dare he insult you like that? It wasn’t even your fault. You stared after him as he stomped away, before turning on your feet, storming off in the opposite direction.
You had known Charles for a long time now. Although you had never spoken much, you always greeted each other, until you got your new position in the team. Charles was already driving for Ferrari when you first started there as an intern. You joined in on meetings with the drivers and sometimes spoke to them during these, but you didn’t see the drivers much otherwise. After your time as an intern, you had gotten a full-time job and worked your way up the team, and now, finally, you had made it to race strategist for Charles Leclerc, where your decisions actually had an effect – or so you thought.
During all your years at Ferrari, the previous head of strategy, Rueda, always listened to and appreciated your opinions and suggestions for the race strategies. He supported your development over the years and saw you grow from an inexperienced intern to an expert with a unique view. Before he left Ferrari, he promoted you to Charles’ race engineer; he believed in your skill and thought you could provide unexpected, but well-working strategies that would lead Charles to victories.
However, after Rueda left, and Ravin Jain took over the job of head strategist, your opinions were ignored. You worked especially hard to convince him you deserved your current position. You developed numerous possible strategies for every one of Charles’ races, running tons of simulations to make sure you had a strategy for every situation. You thought about all the unexpected circumstances that might arise and how to maximise the outcome for each of them. You knew exactly what to do in every situation to ensure a good ending position for Charles, but Jain undermined you every single time. You would present him with all the information you had collected, and show him all the possible strategies and which ones you expected would work best, but he would never listen to you. Jain would always overrule your decisions with different options that somehow turned out much worse. As a result, Charles lost so many more places than necessary, and missed so many more podiums – wins even – than he should’ve.
The worst part was that Charles blamed you for everything. You were new in the position of race strategist, and you wanted to leave a good impression on the team and, most importantly, have a good working relationship with Charles. In your line of work, teamwork and cooperation, and consequently trust, are incredibly important. You wanted Charles to You wanted Charles to rely on you for strategy, allowing him to focus solely on driving. But he couldn’t. He questioned every advice you gave – whether it made sense – and more often than not, it didn’t. The relationship between the two of you was anything but one of trust.
Charles didn’t know what was happening between you and the head strategist. All he knew was that the strategies were awful and he was losing races that he could have won. He didn’t know how amazing and thought-out your own strategies really were, and how good you were at your job if you actually received the opportunity to do it. As a matter of fact, he had never had a real conversation with you before you got your new role. Previously, you just hung around in the background, only speaking with your team and some work friends you had made along the way, but never directly with the drivers. Quite frankly, he questioned whether you were even qualified for your job.
Although Charles didn’t know much about you, his opinion about you was formed and unchanging. To him, it seemed you didn’t know much about racing strategies or engineering; the results of your strategies and your silence during the debriefs were enough proof for him. There was only one logical explanation for how you’d gotten your role in the team; you had gotten your position through favouritism – or perhaps you’d done the head strategist a little ‘favour’.
– – – – –
During the next race, Jain had done it again. You had developed the perfect strategy for Charles, you had worked everything out so you were prepared for every situation. But when you showed the results to Jain and suggested your preferred strategy, he told you that your strategies could be better and you should ‘try this’. You knew it wasn’t a suggestion but an order to drop your strategy and use his instead. The result left you feeling defeated. Charles would undoubtedly be upset with the outcome, outing his anger on you, while you couldn’t do anything to make it better.
From your spot in the garage after the race, you could already see him stomping towards you. You couldn’t blame him really, he had missed out on yet another podium due to a bad strategy.
“What now?” you muttered under your breath as you saw him approach, bracing yourself for another confrontation.
“What now?” Charles echoed, his tone mocking. “You’re asking me that? You couldn’t form a proper strategy to save your life! How did you get this job in the first place? Sleep with the boss?”
You whipped your head around at his comment, narrowing your eyes as shock and anger coursed through your body. You had heard comments like this many times before; Formula 1 is a man’s world and you know what the men around you are like. You know you shouldn’t have expected anything less from Charles, yet you had. You were surprised that Charles would say something like this—something so vile. Yes, you had never really gotten along, but there had always been mutual respect. In all your interactions with Charles, he seemed kind enough, even if he was frustrated with you; to make such a misogynistic comment was a new low for him.
“What the fuck is wrong with you? How can you even say something like that? Do you know how offensive that is?”
“You’re not denying it,” he yelled back at you.
You scoffed. “I’m not doing this,” you said, shaking your head before walking away, the tears welling up in your eyes. It felt like a betrayal.
Charles followed you, “How about you explain why you keep screwing up my races?”
You ran your hands over your face in frustration as you rushed away from him, quickly making your way to your office. Charles had already upset you, and you didn’t want to cry in front of him – your job was already hard enough without him holding something like this over your head. If your colleagues found out you had cried on the job, you would never hear the end of how women can’t handle the pressure of F1. You tried to close the door as soon as you entered your office, but Charles was already there with you, staring you down. His arms were crossed in a nonchalant manner, but his face showed his annoyance clearly. “Well?”
You tried to avoid answering his question, but it seemed impossible. Even though you had kept silent (except for your scoff, that is), he wouldn’t leave you alone. God was this man frustrating. Your patience snapped.
“I’m not the one screwing up your races, Charles. If you have any issues with the strategies you should take it up with Jain, because he changes my plans every time.”
“What are you talking about?” He asked, frowning.
“Every strategy I create, Jain overrules,” you said, trying to keep your voice steady as you closed in on him. “I come up with plans based on simulations, and data. I’m ready for every scenario. But he dismisses them and forces his own strategies, which obviously don’t work. You’re blaming the wrong person.”
Charles stared at you, the anger in his eyes slowly giving way to confusion. “What? Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?”
“I tried,” you replied, frustration seeping into your voice. “But you were too busy yelling at me to listen. And honestly, I didn’t think you’d believe me.”
He ran a hand through his hair, clearly processing what you had said. “So, Jain is the one messing up the strategies?”
“Yes,” you confirmed. “And it’s been incredibly frustrating to watch my hard work get thrown out and to then take the blame when it fails.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You should be. You’ve been yelling at me for months when it wasn’t even my fault.”
“Why didn’t you do anything about it?” Charles asked.
You laughed at his question. “What was I supposed to do? You know how it is—actually, you don’t, because drivers are privileged,” you sighed at the frown on Charles’ face, “no one would have believed me if I had told them, or they probably would have agreed. And if I had gone against Jain, I would have been fired so fast,” you trailed off.
Charles sighed. You were right; how on earth were they supposed to fix this? Jain would just continue to override your decisions no matter what, and that obviously wasn’t beneficial to anyone.
“For the next race, show me your strategy, okay? We can look at it together and if I agree we can work something out. Together.”
You smiled dryly at Charles’ suggestion. If he agrees? Who does he think he is? Nevertheless, you concur, if only to get rid of him. It doesn’t sound very convincing, but Charles is satisfied nonetheless.
– – – – –
For the next race, you had prepared more than usual. After the first few encounters with Jain you had given up on preparing your races thoroughly; it felt like a waste of time. But knowing that Charles would listen to you, and you might finally get to use your own strategy motivated you.
You carefully discussed your plans with Charles in his driver’s room, away from everyone else. He listened attentively while you explained all the possible strategies and the one you thought would yield the best results. This was the first time Charles actually heard you talk about the strategies with enthusiasm, and he admired your knowledge of the topic, although he was somewhat surprised after your previous interactions. Hearing your passion for your work and knowing that you weren’t the reason for the unsuccessful races finally allowed the much-wanted bond of trust to form.
“We're going to use your strategy,” Charles said decisively. “No matter what Jain says, we'll do whatever you think is best. You've thought everything out, it'd be foolish to do something entirely different.”
"And if Jain gets mad and wants to fire me?" You asked, a hint of concern in your voice.
"The results will likely be good, so there'll be no reason for him to get mad,” Charles replied confidently. “But if he does, I'll vouch for you."
You nodded in response, a nervous but grateful smile on your face. It was exciting to finally use one of your own strategies, even though Jain would probably reject your proposals again.
Your assumption was correct; during your meeting with Jain, he had once more told you to follow his strategies instead of using your own ideas. Although Charles had told you there wouldn’t be any reason for your boss to get mad if the race went well, you weren’t assured enough to follow his advice. You couldn’t take any risks with your job – you weren’t experienced enough to get a similar job anywhere else, especially with the reputation Jain had built for you. If you had to follow his strategy to keep your job you would.
To say Charles was upset with the strategy during the race would be an understatement. He didn’t know where it had gone wrong – you had discussed this, hadn’t you? You came to the agreement that you would use your own strategy instead of listening to Jain, yet you hadn’t. The things you were telling him to do were nothing you had discussed during your private meeting. Charles felt frustrated at your inability to follow through; you were ruining his chances of a win because you were a coward who wouldn’t dare to stand up to her boss and he wasn’t going to take it.
“Boxing next lap, Charles.”
Charles scoffed at your order before responding, “Box now? That’s ridiculous! The tyres are feeling fine, I can stay out longer.”
You sigh from your position on the pit wall. “Charles, the team thinks it’s best that you–”
“I don’t care what the team thinks! What do you think is the best move?”
“Charles–” you stammer, getting nervous from his reaction.
“You know the team always makes the wrong calls, Y/N. What do you think we should do?”
You sighed, feeling the weight of the decision. If you go against Jain’s orders now and the race ends badly, you’ll be in big trouble. Charles said he’d vouch for you though, and the current strategy wasn’t going to get the team anywhere good either. You contemplate your options.
“Stay out a few more laps.”
Although you couldn’t see it, Charles smiled triumphantly in the car, knowing he had convinced you to use your own strategy. This was a good start, he just needed to do well now, to make sure you got your confidence back. So, for the next races, you would follow your own strategies as well instead of simply following Jain’s orders.
The race had ended up much better than anybody had expected, all thanks to your strategy. If you hadn’t switched up the strategy, Charles would have ended up significantly lower in the ranking. After finishing up his duties, Charles sought you out in the garage. You thought he would yell at you again, for going against your plan – going rogue, but he didn’t.
“Thank you,” he said, his voice sincere. “Your strategy worked. Next time, we’ll use your plan again. From the start this time, forget whatever Jain tells you.”
You nodded in response, a tight smile on your face. It was nice that Charles showed his appreciation for you. However, now that you were standing still instead of moving around, you were easier to spot. So far, you had managed to avoid Jain by blending in with the bustling garage, but Charles’s presence made you easy to find.
“Y/N!” Jain said loudly, making your eyes shoot over to him quickly.
“We need to have a serious talk! Follow me to my office.” The look on his face was scolding and his body posture showed his anger clearly as he walked off.
You met Charles’ eyes for a second, a nervous smile on your face. “I better go,” you said before rushing after your boss.
“I’ll come with you,” Charles responded firmly, joining your side.
“I said I’d vouch for you if Jain became angry. I always keep my word,” he said after seeing the confused look on your face.
Jain had already taken a seat in his office when you walked in.
“What the hell were you thinking? Ignoring my strategy?” he hollered.
You took a deep breath, mustering the courage to go against him, but Charles beat you to it, stepping out from behind the door.
“There’s no need to yell at your employee like that, Jain. Besides, her strategy led to much better results than boxing would have.”
Jain’s eyes quickly darted over to him in surprise, having missed his presence, before focusing on you. “You’re here to follow orders, Y/N. Not to make your own decisions. You disobeyed a direct instruction.”
You opened your mouth to respond, but Charles had already started speaking, his voice steady but firm.
“With all due respect, Jain, it’s clear that Y/N’s strategy was superior today. Her approach brought us better results, and we need to recognise that.”
Jain turned his glare to Charles, clearly not pleased with the driver’s intervention. “This is none of your business, Charles. She’s my employee, and she needs to follow my orders.”
“Actually, it is my business,” Charles shot back.
Your eyes darted over to him. This was not at all the right time, but he looked hot as fuck defending you like this. He hadn’t even had the time to change after the race, his driver’s suit hanging around his waist with his black fireproofs on full display. His hair was messy and his cheeks were flushed, whether it was from the race or frustration, you weren’t sure. You could feel your own cheeks turning hot at the sight, and you were certain a blush was spreading across your face, too.
“Her strategies directly affect my performance on the track. Today, she proved her worth. She deserves the chance to implement her plans without being overruled.”
The room fell silent as Jain stared at Charles, his anger simmering beneath the surface.
No, not the right time at all.
Jain finally sighed, rubbing his temples. “Fine. You’ve made your point. But if it fails there will be consequences.”
You nodded eagerly, “of course.”
Charles nodded as well, happy with the outcome.
– – – – –
The next few races turned out much better. Without interference, you could confidently present and implement your strategies. And the results spoke for themselves: Charles consistently finished on the podium. His performance improved so much that even Jain had to admit your strategies worked better than his.
When the next race weekend arrived tensions were high. So far, your racing strategies had proved successful, but you aimed for more every race. It was certainly helpful that you and Charles were a good team. Ever since the issues between Charles and you were resolved, there was mutual trust, and Charles supported every strategy you came up with, even if it seemed risky.
You wished Charles good luck with a nervous smile before he got in his car and, as had become a ritual, he responded confidently with a “we’ve got this” and a reassuring smile that somehow always calmed your nerves.
When the race began you confidently pursued your strategy while Charles navigated the track with precision. Everything went perfectly: the pit stops as swift and smooth as could be and every decision moving Charles closer to the front.
There were only a few laps to go with Charles steadily in second place, closing in on the leader. He managed to get within DRS range and, as the team watched in anticipation, executed a flawless overtake, taking the lead in the race. The garage filled with cheers and applause as the team celebrated his amazing overtake. Meanwhile, a big smile overtook your features as you watched Charles drive on the screen in front of you.
You stared in disbelief when Charles crossed the finish line in first place. The joy was immense; the whole garage was celebrating the fresh win as you hugged the rest of the team on the pit wall in delight. You had done it – your strategy had led him to a win.
Following your colleagues, you rushed to the parc fermé, wanting to be the first to celebrate this amazing race with him. You watched as Charles got out of his car, pumping his fist in the air in victory. The smile on his face was huge as he jogged to the team waiting to congratulate him.
“We did it, Y/N!” he exclaimed, pulling you into a celebratory hug. You laughed at his antics but hugged him back nevertheless. If there wasn’t a barrier between you, he would have lifted you up and spun you around, that’s how happy he was. Two months ago he couldn’t have envisioned a win any time soon, and now he had managed to snatch up the first place, all thanks to you.
After his weigh-in, he walked back to you with a mischievous glint in his eye. “I want you to come up on the podium with me,” he said.
“Ah,” he tutted, already knowing you would protest before you even opened your mouth, “it’s just as much your win as it’s mine.”
“Charles…”
“You deserve to be up there too! It’s your first win!”
You stared at him hesitantly.
“Come on, Y/N. Just this once. If you say no, I’ll just ask again next time, and the time after that, and—”
“Next time?”
“Yes. We’re obviously going to win many more races together!” Charles said with a childish grin. “Come on!” He continued, tugging on your sleeve.
You finally succumbed, nodding your head. “Okay, fine.”
“Ah perfect! I’ll see you up there!” He said with a big grin, before walking off to do his interview.
You used the time Charles was in the cooldown room to mentally prepare yourself. You were about to stand on the podium. Your face was going to be broadcast on live TV for everyone to see, and it made you nervous. You smiled nervously at the people guiding you up the stairs to the podium where you met Charles. He smiled comfortingly and chatted with you relaxedly while you waited for his name to be called out.
When the time came, you tried to stay in the background, hiding behind Charles who walked out in front of you before taking your place on the separate podium for the winning constructor. From your position, you could see the crowd cheering for Charles while the Monegasque anthem sounded over the track. You admired the sea of red that was here for Ferrari, for Charles. When the Italian anthem played you made eye contact with Charles, laughing silently with him over your colleagues singing along loudly.
You gracefully accepted the trophy for the team, smiling and lifting it up after it was offered to you. The sound of your team cheering and applauding filled you with joy. You couldn’t be prouder of Charles for this achievement, and maybe of yourself too, especially when you saw the admiring look Charles was sending you. It made your thoughts hazy, tuning out for a second as you enjoyed this moment of glory while staring out at the crowd in front of you.
Then, suddenly, you heard the pops of bottles. You could barely set down your trophy before your face was covered in champagne.
“Charles,” You gasped.
Barely able to breathe, you tried to cover your face with your cap. It was no use, however; the champagne was already pricking in your eyes as you blindly tried to push Charles away. When the other men on the podium targeted him, you used the moment to pop your own bottle of champagne. Of course, your goal was to completely douse Charles as payback, but he was quick to flee. Before you got the chance to properly drench him, it was already time for the podium picture. Charles grinned at you mischievously from his spot next to you. “You look good in victory champagne,” he teased.
You glared at him jokingly. You were certain that you looked ridiculous with your cap askew and your clothes completely soaked in champagne, not to mention the mascara that was probably running down your face. You rolled your eyes at his comment, but couldn’t help the laugh that escaped.
“Thanks, I think.”
He laughed with you, a gleeful look on his face.
“How about we go out for a celebratory drink?” He asked with a gentle smile.
You noticed the more serious tone in his voice straight away. His expression was one you didn’t recognise; he seemed almost insecure.
Raising an eyebrow, you couldn’t resist teasing him.
“Are you asking me out, Charles?”
He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Well, yeah. I guess I am. What do you say?”
You laughed again, before nodding your head.
“A drink sounds good.”

Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger FLT | Pamphlet ft. Main Cast Messages & Staff Interviews (pages and translations below, long post)
Iuchi Haruhi (Taiya Hando/BoonRed) A professional "Deliverer" who rides in his beloved supercar, and who promises to deliver anything. He's a master of development and modification, and is actually a very rich person. For that reason, when he sees something he likes, he'll immediately acquire it by exclaiming, "I love it!" and "I've bought it!" Together with Bundorio, he developed a variety of Boonboom Cars with the goal of participating in the BBG. He Changes into "BoonRed" with the Boonboom Changer! Grabbing ahold of the wheel of leadership is the Red warrior, who uses a bold fighting style and leads his friends smartly.
"Looking back, say a few words for the character you spent a year playing!" It was the most fun I've ever had! Thank you Taiya! Until next time.
"What's the most memorable episode from the main series?" It's episode 48! I love the scene where everyone including Sakito says "this is the most cranked up!!" after Boonboom comes back to life! Every time I watch that scene, I vividly remember the moment we filmed it!
"Personal confidential stories from filming that can only be told now!" I know I claimed to only eat ramen once a week, but the truth is, I ate it about three times a week…and went to the gym!!
"Please show us your enthusiasm for the Final Live Tour!" For now, this Final Live Tour will be my last chance to become Taiya, so it's all the more reason for me to cherish it, and to get cranked up as I run through to the end!
"A message to the fans who've supported you over the past year!" Thank you so much for your support over the past year! I was incredibly nervous in the beginning, but everyone's voices always helped push me forward. Thank you very much!! "What's the most memorable episode from the main series?" Episode 14 left a particularly strong impression on me. It was the first time that Ishiro's past was depicted, and it was refreshing to perform with facial expressions that hadn't been shown prior.
"Personal confidential stories from filming that can only be told now!" During running scenes and scenes where I take out the Changer, I'd be so nervous that I'd drop the Changer over 10 times…

SPECIAL TALK (Scriptwriter Cross Interview)
Tomioka Atsuhiro x Higuchi Tatsuto x Morichi Natsumi Yamaguchi Hiroshi x Konuta Kenji Interviewer: Matsumoto Hiroya
Matsumoto: First, I'd like to ask you what your thoughts are after making it through the year.
Tomioka: A year seems like a long time, but it's actually short. It was a year of trial and error, trying to figure out how to put it all together while receiving good points from the other Writers. When it comes to summing it all up, all I can do is reflect and think about what I left undone, what I could have done differently, among other things.
Morichi: It was a really blessed year for me, where I thought, "This is so much fun!" It was the same as in anime, where we had meetings to discuss how to make things more interesting and how to depict the characters in a more appealing way. It was very refreshing to entrust it into the hands of the filming set, and then seeing the interesting "evolution" that came from the ideas of everyone on set. In the case of anime, you rarely get any ideas back from the production side, so…I learned alot and had fun.
Tomioka: The line "Otsukaresanseater" is one she created.
Morichi: I was hoping that it would become a regular line for when they were beaten. I wrote it in a number of my own episodes, where it ended up sticking, so I thought, "Alright!"
Higuchi: This was my first time participating in a tokusatsu production, so I went to the meetings with the intention of learning as much as I could. They were so incredibly quick in responding to the topics on the agenda, that a rough image was already done by the time we'd leave a meeting (laughs). In any case, I put everything I had into writing so that I could live up to the expectations of the job.
Yamaguchi: I've been watching the series as they aired since "Himitsu Sentai Gorenger," but I'd never had any connections with Toei until now. I was envious of all the Writers around me who were participating, but now, decades later, my dream had finally come true!
Konuta: I had experience writing for Sentai like "Engine Sentai Go-Onger," but as productions change, so do the way meetings were held, and what I struggled with most was the fact that their lengths were shorter than they were back in the day.
Tomioka: The reason we invited Konuta-san on is so that we could create a buzz that "an original member is going to write for it!"
Matsumoto: What was the criteria and methods used to determine which Scriptwriter would be in charge of each episode this time?
Tomioka: I'd be like, "Who wants to do it?" (laughs). We'd then raised our hands, regardless of if we were suitable for the topic. I had a style of saying, "As long as you put in these kinds of elements, you can do whatever you want." I thought it was the right way to go in order to expand upon the characters, especially in the first half of the program, which is cheerful, easy to understand, and features stories contained in single episodes. I thought that would get children, who were the main viewers, to really get into it.
Matsumoto: Then, when the other four of you raised your hands…?
Higuchi: Ah, for me I did Toilet and ATM. Although those around me also showed interest and raised their hands, in the current Reiwa era, all sorts of so called "dirty" topics are forbidden due to compliance reasons. After much back and forth of, "Then, what'll happen with the Reiwa toilet monster?," the idea of "washing away" started to emerge, and in the end, the story was about "Ishiro's motives being washed away and his true character being revealed."
Morichi: I chose Owan Grumer from the design proposals in order for him to trap Mira, but…when the colored design was finished, it looked really cool. I should've given him a cooler role to play.
Yamaguchi: The request for Kaseki Grumer was the opposite, as it was like, "I want the content to be a certain way, so please draw the design like this!" I think that was a rather rare thing.
Tomioka: At that time, I wanted a story that would move people and make them tear up. Who would be the best character for this? I discussed this with Yamaguchi-san, and we decided that either Mira or Jou would be the easiest to make the viewers become emotionally attached.
Yamaguchi: I was in charge of Bakuage 5, where Jou performed his first Change. I was always talking with Tomioka-san about it, where he said, "Jou's like the Red members of Sentai's olden days." In a way, I'm an old Showa era tokusatsu guy, so I wanted to do some serious tokusatsu too. I couldn't write about Toilet Grumer or anything like that, so…
Tomioka: This is the good thing about writing with multiple Writers. I also left it up to each Writer to decide how they'd develop each Kurumaju and Boonboomger member in an interesting way.
Matsumoto: Konuta-san, are there any Kurumaju in particular that you have an emotional attachment to?
Konuta: Ballpark Grumer…(laughs).
Tomioka: Ballpark Grumer?
Everyone: You don't remember!
Konuta: It was there on the list of design ideas for enemies! I had my eye on it for a long time. I wanted to write a story about baseball. I love baseball.
Tomioka: I'm pretty sure Yamaguchi-san was also trying to do a baseball episode around the same time.
Konuta: Only for a moment (laughs).
Morichi: Incidentally, when we were discussing what to do after that in Bakuage 24 and 25, Higuchi-san said, "Something with baseball…"
Konuta: Everyone wanted to do it (laughs).
Tomioka: It's an easy to understand motif, huh?
Konuta: Right. That's why I said to myself, "I want there to be a baseball monster," so for Bakuage 23, I was allowed to make an episode about baseball.
Matsumoto: It was Glove Grumer, right?
Konuta: Right. It'd be abit difficult to include him in the story if he remained as a ballpark, so we talked about whether we should use something like a ball, bat, or glove. From there, we asked Shimamoto Sensei to design it one more time. When I said, "Since it's Shimamoto Sensei, I want it to be like "Gyakkyo Nine"!," the entire staff got really excited (laughs). That's when everyone's switch, or rather, "ignition" was turned on (laughs).
Matsumoto: I'd like to ask all of you what kind of content you would've wanted to focus on if you could create a script for one more episode.
Higuchi: Taiya and Chasshiro's story was properly explained. I didn't get to do a single episode focused on just Taiya's story.
Tomioka: Sorry (laughs).
Higuchi: It could be an episode about either Taiya or Chasshiro each doing their own thing. Or maybe, an episode about Genba and Sakito just talking to each other for 20 long minutes while under a small kotatsu.
Morichi: Coincidentally, Genba was under a kotatsu during Bakuage 43.
Higuchi: Right, right! I think it'd be fun to try and write a story set in everyday life, away from any incidents.
Morichi: I actually regret that the show ended without us writing a single episode for Shirabe-san, so I'd like to write an episode where Mira and Shirabe-san work hard together as a pair!
Yamaguchi: I think I'd like to do one more Jou episode after bringing him this far! For example, something where Jou's accused of a crime he didn't commit and becomes a fugitive. I'd like to try my hand at something that's more like a detective story.
Tomioka: I'm sure everyone feels the same way, we're you think, "I could've done it more like this, couldn't I?" Looking back at the story, I think we could've done more with Taiya, like maybe an episode during the middle of the show, where he'd go bankrupt and move into a broken down apartment with Boon-chan…
Everyone: That sounds interesting!
Matsumoto: Konuta-san, what about you?
Konuta: I participated more as a guest. Looking back on it this way, the three scripts I worked on were comedic, so I feel like I would've wanted to try something abit more serious. The episodes where the Hashiriyan executives make their exits were all cool, and I would've liked to have written episodes like those as well.
Matsumoto: I think this'll be similar to the Kurumaju that were brought up earlier, but were there any scenes that took a particularly long time to create or that you had a hard time expressing?
Tomioka: Speaking of expression, even though they're a Car Sentai, we couldn't do car action properly. Detective dramas during the Showa era had cars banging and crashing into each other every week. It was so painful that we couldn't do that~! (laughs). While it was painful, it also made me sad.
Higuchi: You kept saying stuff like, "Armored vehicles that jump around in Ginza!" (*referencing Seibu Keisatsu).
Tomioka: Because it's Boonboomger, I wanted to bring out the individual personalities of each Boonboom Car, and recreate the car action scenes I watched every week when I was a kid. However, that was also quite difficult. There was also the problem of the length of the footage while balancing the CG used. Also, in that highway space, only Yaru-chan appeared as a standalone enemy. That's one of the reasons why we couldn't expand on the variety.
Higuchi: I don't know if this'll be me showing off or not, but I had the opportunity to do two episodes in a row where Hashiriyan executives made their exits. I had already finished Cannonborg's story to some extent, but when it came to time for Madrex Fury to leave, I had alot of trouble figuring out how to put the drama together. It was thanks to Tomioka-san and Director Nakazawa that his story was completed.
Tomioka: There was alot of back and forth on how to do Madrex's death, right?
Higuchi: I had decided that, "Madrex's final scene has to be that!" There was Genba's drama, which had been building up from the previous episodes, but when it intersects with Madrex's way of life, what kind of reaction will trigger Genba to return to his friends? Madrex's way of life and his feelings for the Sanseaters were also tied to it, and after much "rallying," we finally came to that configuration. In the beginning, there was no development set for Genba and Madrex to meet.
Matsumoto: Madrex's "kill me" line to Red was extremely hot.
Tomioka: Higuchi-kun did a good job of expanding on it.
Higuchi: That's what I struggled with the most. Why did Madrex ask Red to "kill him"? I wondered what kind of condition Madrex was in then……and when I really started to think about it, I found myself at a dead end. However, Director Nakazawa gave me the idea, "In this story, we don't want Madrex to encounter the Sanseaters when he dies, do we?" I thought, "That'd be out of character!" (laughs), but from there, his way of life became clear, and the scene between Genba and Madrex was completed.
Matsumoto: Not seeing each other is a man's way of life. Morichi-san, what did you think?
Morichi: I often struggled with how to express Genba's feelings. Like how to express his hidden desire for revenge. In particular, I repeatedly asked Tomioka-san, "Is this interpretation correct for Bakuage 32?" With the help of Director Nakazawa and the actors, I think the sumo scene between Genba and Sakito turned out to be a great one.
Tomioka: I told her to write about her ideal "cool guy." However, Genba's vengeful heart and style of action was originally based off the hard boiled style of the past, so it bothered her alot. However, since Director Nakazawa was also the Main Director of "Ressha Sentai ToQger," he gave her a variety of advice. And so, it all came together successfully.
Matsumoto: Yamaguchi-san, what did you think?
Yamaguchi: It's not something I necessarily had a hard time with, but it's the story of manliness, so the first encounter between the Sanseaters and Madrex-sama during Bakuage 30. The image I had was of "Toei's yakuza films." When I was writing the first scenario in the heat of the moment, I had Itasha say things like, "Darling!" (laughs). Looking back, it's quite memorable.
Tomioka: I think I'd say that too.
Konuta: For me, it was the episode of Mira's curry restaurant. For this story, it started out with the intention of explaining everything about why Mira works part time and why she does so many jobs! I guess I'm not good at writing since I wasn't able to get that far with it.
Tomioka: It had to do with the length too. Also, Boonboomger had to cut out unnecessary lines.
Konuta: Right! They were really gone!
Tomioka: While we were trying to catch children's attention with the giant Robo battles and action, we thought of the drama part as a subtraction, as we tried to cut down on lines, have facial expressions "do the talking," and not add any unnecessary words. Boonboomger was especially particular about these points, so as a result, Taiya and the others felt like they were lacking in words to say.
Matsumoto: I felt that Taiya was created to be a character with alot of depth.
Tomioka: I didn't include monologues, and I didn't write any lines like, "Now let's do this" when he was going to do a certain action. The rest was movements. I wanted to tell his story through visuals as much as possible. I wanted to create scenes that wouldn't be boring for children, our main viewers.
Matsumoto: Let's move onto the final thought. Since we talked about lines, does everyone have a favorite line?
Morichi: I guess it's, "Otsukaresanseater."
Higuchi: Things like, "Celestial Total Assets Slash" (Bakuage 19).
Tomioka: Basically, the names of the special moves were created by the staff, but the "Total Assets Slash" was created due to the momentum of the story (laughs). It was interesting to hear Taiya say such outrageous things every once in awhile.
Morichi: I loved all of Madrex-sama's lines.
Higuchi: For Madrex, I asked if it was "alright to have him introduce himself when he first appears" in Bakuage 6, so we went with that exact introduction scene. I had made that from the beginning with the intention of doing the same thing when it came time for Madrex Fury to die.
Tomioka: I believe that in hero stories, role calls should be done no matter the circumstance, so from then on, we established it so that the executive characters would announce themselves.
Higuchi: His entry and exit went very well, so it felt like things had gone as calculated.
Morichi: Lines like, "It's time for a walk" were really good! They made me feel numb!
Matsumoto: Yamaguchi-san, what do you think?
Yamaguchi: The first time I was in charge was for Bakuage 5, where Jou says, "I'll protect Boonboomger too." Despite that, Jou ends up doing some fairly stupid things later on (laughs).
Tomioka: That's what makes him so cute. It's because of Jou's character that he could do that. He's got the range.
Konuta: For me, my episodes had alot of parodies and parts that were taken from Go-Onger's material……and while it wasn't me, I liked the period drama styled lines for those involved with the Hashiriyans that Tomioka-san wrote. Things like the way Tokoyari-san and Naito-san interacted with Spindo had a nice "taste" to it, don't you think?
Yamaguchi: I thought, "That's so Tomioka-san~!"
Konuta: What's more, Naito-san comes across as a good guy.
Tomioka: For Naito-san, I told Kuji-san in the beginning, "Just let him perform as if he's a good guy." I told the staff that he was actually an incredibly bad guy. I also said that I wanted an actor who could make him look like a nice, smiling person. I wanted to show children the "two sides" of a human.
Morichi: The scariest from him was during the scene in Bakuage 44, where he says, "Cranked up." It was the worst line for Taiya to hear…
Tomioka: The truth is that behind Tokoyari-san, there's an elite with alot more money. It wasn't easy to fully express it though. I wanted there to be a proper invasion after all, and I wanted to tell a story where the heroes are properly cornered. That's why the more cheerful the first half of the story was, the more I wanted to try and develop the story in such a way that the second half would make you think, "Eh? Is that what the series is about? Something where you'd be like, "What about the carefree deliveries you were making earlier in the show?"
Matsumoto: I think it was done in such a way that the adults watching gradually became more absorbed in it.
Tomioka: In the very beginning, I wanted to firmly establish the Robo and the transformation items to the children. So, I didn't have to think too hard. There was naturally alittle foreshadowing here and there, but basically, I was just trying to keep things cheerful and fun! Then, my stance became that I wanted them to play pretend transformation even after the program ended. For the 3rd Lap, Kuji-san said, "Let's go in a harder direction!," so we started by revealing Genba's true identity.
Matsumoto: Everyone, thank you for all the previously unknown information, including the smallest behind the scenes details. Tomioka Sensei, on behalf of everyone, please give us a few words.
Tomioka: With this, we'll also be graduating from Boonboomger. To all of the viewers, thank you for cranking us up! _
Tomioka Atsuhiro x Matsumoto Hiroya Interview
Tomioka Atsuhiro wrote the script for the first part of FLT's "Final Live" following the main TV series. He talked about his thoughts on the FLT and the behind the scenes of writing episodes meant only for the "stage," which he portrayed as taking place after the end of the main series. Continuing from the interview on the previous page, this was conducted by Matsumoto Hiroya.
Matsumoto: For Tomioka Sensei, I have a strong impression of his animated works.
Tomioka: Up until now, my career has been almost exclusively in anime. In anime, it doesn't matter if a building is destroyed or a planet blows up, all you have to do is draw it. With live action however, it's not that simple. There's filming conditions and budget limitations. If I write a line like, "A huge crowd is gathering," then that's an issue.
Matsumoto: Did you spend alot of time trying to work out things like that?
Tomioka: It was like that in the beginning. I would propose what I "wanted to do" to the production team and Directors as a sort of "memo of ideas," and would learn as we discussed them. So, I gradually came to realize what I could and couldn't do. Still, I wanted there to be impactful imagery, so I made a variety of requests right up until the very end. Due to modern dramas being subject to various regulations, we're in an age where a bank robber is ridiculed for going through the trouble of fastening their seatbelt even though they're getting into the car to get away as quickly as possible, so it was also difficult to "depict evil." This is why the Hashiriyans had to stop at the traffic light in Bakuage 1…
Matsumoto: I never knew about that before…
Tomioka: That wasn't because they were serious about it! I tried to come up with a reasonable explanation like, "Maybe they came to a stop because Taiya's car stopped next to theirs?" It's simply because of the age we're in that those guys had to stop.
Matsumoto: There's also the part where the old lady was slowly walking along…
Tomioka: I managed to get by with gags, but I had a particularly difficult time with Bakuage 1. This is going to be read by the fans after the final episode, so…there was actually something I wanted to do in the final episode, but couldn't. In the end, the story is turned around with them saying "cranked up!," but the original plan was for Chasshiro to infiltrate the enemy side and plant false orders for the presidents and prime ministers of the world, which would stop the screams by immediately stopping the conflicts that were occurring at the same time. I also wanted to include a scene where the president who loves the maid Momo-chan from Bakuage 2 signs an order. When the fighting stops, soldiers and civilians from all over the world would shout with joy, so with the screams disappearing, the supply of screams for Spindo would cease.
Matsumoto: And that was difficult to do?
Tomioka: First of all, depicting war zones was impossible from the start (laughs). That also went for depicting the countries of the world. Because of that, I switched to the direction that would make the viewers feel the most good, something the show has consistently been saying, that being "cranked up!" That's easier and more fun for the smaller ones to understand than talking about politics, don't you think? I wanted them to stand in front of the TV and shout "cranked up!" together. I now think that it was more satisfying to turn the tables with "cranked up" rather than trying to come up with some strange reason.
Matsumoto: From here, I'd like us to start talking about the Final Live Tour, but are there any differences between the Boonboomger's performance on stage and on film, or any particular points that you focused on?
Tomioka: This is distinct. In Boonboomger, especially for Taiya, he has alot of "…" in his lines. He spoke only through his facial expressions. It was the same not only for Chasshiro, but for Genba too. On stage, if you don't speak, it's as if you're not there. This is something a Scriptwriter and Director told me when I was involved in a 2.5D stage production, and I thought, "Ah, I see." So that's why Taiya, who didn't talk that much during the TV series, is now talking a whole lot (laughs).
Matsumoto: He sure does have alot of lines.
Tomioka: I had learned that speaking means that the audience's eyes are focused on the actors, and that's what the stage is all about, so my stance on writing these scripts is different from TV.
Matsumoto: This time, the Sanseaters will play an active role from the end of the main series to the Final Live Tour. I'm really looking forward to that part too.
Tomioka: The Sanseaters are healing characters, but I wanted to touch on the fact that they have their own dramas, and that's how I came up with the current character arrangement.
Matsumoto: The fact that Itasha relied on the Deliverer was quite a heartwarming point.
Tomioka: They had also gone through a year of fighting on Earth…and came to understand that Hashiriyan was a terrible organization. It's not that the Sanseaters joined forces with the heroes, but that they were clever enough to take advantage of them, which is the image I used to create the flow of the story. And above all else, Taiya-kun and the others properly supported them…I've constantly said that "Boonboomger is an adult Sentai," and that they're "adult members." I hope that you could feel that kind of flexible attitude of theirs.
Matsumoto: I felt so much love when I saw the FLT script. What are the highlights of the FLT…I think there'll probably be many children and adult fans in attendance. I think it'll be different depending on the person watching.
Tomioka: For family visitors, there'll be a surprise in store for Sakito at the very end…and I hope that BoonViolet's surprise will wow them. I want them to be like, "Sakito, I'm glad you got to wear your Champion Jacket!" Even in productions like the VS series during early Spring, or the special works distributed through TTFC, heroes get something extra, like a new strengthened form or new equipment for the Robo. When we talked about what to do for this, even as I was watching the main series, I felt sad that Sakito was the only one not wearing his own jacket. My long awaited wish has finally been fulfilled.
Matsumoto: Yeah!
Tomioka: After the jackets appeared in the main series, I often wondered how to make Sakito naturally deviate from the flow of the five members who were equipped with the jackets, but as a result, he often ended up looking like he was separate from the team. In that sense, I was happy that all six of them properly wore their jackets while doing their role call this time.
Matsumoto: Personally, I was looking forward to seeing how Sakito would be involved in the FLT.
Tomioka: All six of them are Boonboomgers, so naturally, Sakito will appear, and at the very end, the Sanseaters and Jou get involved with each other, with Jou having his own moments. I was conscious of having each of them play an active role that was an extension of their TV roles. I've sprinkled in some "typical" activities for each and every one of them, such as Chasshiro bringing information. It was similar to the feeling I had when I wrote the Summer film. I was like, "Where and how should I create moments to show off the six of them?"
Matsumoto: Also, what I thought about was that at shows or live performances, there's always people shouting "Do your best!" or "XXger!," which causes others to do the same, but that's not the case this time.
Tomioka: It's, "Cranked up!"
Matsumoto: I think that's what everyone wants to say…and to say it out loud.
Tomioka: They were on TV, so saying, "Do your best!" was a given, but if you want to give power to the Boonboomgers, "cranked up" is the obvious choice. It's also a unique feature of the series, don't you think?
Matsumoto: Amazing, that's…I think that's what adults and children probably wanted to say to them all along.
Tomioka: I've seen a number of the G-Rosso performances, and the cheering from the children was really good! So, for those guys on stage…once the Osaka performance comes to an end, it'll be time for them to graduate. In the sense of sending them off, I hope this'll be the best present for them.
Matsumoto: That sense of unity was the key to creating this production.
Tomioka: That's the great thing about a hero show, don't you think? The feeling of becoming one at the venue. The visitors aren't just an audience, but are integrated into the drama, and I think that's really great.
Matsumoto: It's a feeling that you can't get from an ordinary theater…so I thought this would be a new stage for us. Are there any episodes that you'd like people to rewatch before or after seeing the Final Live Tour stage?
Tomioka: Hmmm…I think everyone has their own favorite episodes. There's alot of content out there now through distribution and other services, which includes a ton of popular shows, but I tend to watch old dramas, ones that are my all time favorites, over and over again. In other words, the ones that influenced me when I was a kid. As a child, I used to watch the same recorded episodes over and over again. I hope that the efforts of these six members will be remembered, and that's why it's a great honor for me as a Scriptwriter to see people rewatch their favorite episodes an endless amount of times.
Matsumoto: I'm the kind of person who rewatches alot of my favorite dramas. I rewatch so many that I memorize the lines, so I understand how you feel…The FLT pamphlet will include a newly written short story about the formation of the Sanseaters. When did you start thinking about this?
Tomioka: I had past settings for each of the three Sanseaters from the beginning. I also thought that there would be a large number of Yarucars from the beginning, and that they would attack Earth. That being said, this was the first time we've actually arranged their encounter as a drama. When Yamaguchi-san wrote a story about the Sanseaters, I wanted to write about what happened before they met Madrex, but I couldn't, which was frustrating. The Sanseaters bodies have the Hashiriyan mark engraved on them, and this time, the story takes place before they were put on, but since we couldn't remove the marks from their costumes during the main series, we couldn't make a prequel, and things ended up unfolding like how you saw in the show. To begin with, it was impossible to portray the three of them before they joined Hashiriyan on TV. When I was asked to write a story about the Sanseaters this time, I thought that if I wrote it, I could tell the story before their marks were engraved. This trio has never been public about their backgrounds before, but we've put together a story where each of them talks naturally about their upbringing and how they all came to the decision of, "Okay, let's make a name for ourselves as Hashiriyans!" It was a great opportunity. I hope that fans will be able to sense the inseparable bond that these three have with each other through their interactions in this short story and during the FLT performance.
Matsumoto: By the way, did you have a plan to get rid of the Sanseaters at the end of the main series, or…?
Tomioka: No, it was already a precondition from the beginning that they'd survive the entire time. However, I was always thinking about how I'd make the Hashiriyans "part ways."
Matsumoto: That's actually a relief…speaking frankly, what do you find to be the "charm" of the trio?
Tomioka: The charm of the Sanseaters, huh…I wonder, what is it? They're strange, aren't they? (laughs).
Matsumoto: I'm naturally drawn to them. They're healing to watch, but when they got the story rolling, it really got rolling.
Tomioka: Yes, it's easy to get emotionally attached to them. Because Taiya-kun and the others are so cool though, in contrast, they're rather plain.
Matsumoto: Is it just me, or does watching the three of them make you want to do your best?
Tomioka: It's because they're always doing their best. Perhaps it was influenced by having written about a "different trio" in a similar circumstance 26 years ago at my old company (laughs). It's written in their vibes, so maybe it's no wonder they're so loved. The Sanseaters just create the Kurumaju and urge them on, but they themselves hardly ever attack humans, right?
Matsumoto: They're good guys! (laughs).
Tomioka: They're at the very, very bottom of the organization, and in fact, they had never even seen their boss, Spindo. Still, the fact that they were the first to arrive on Earth was the only thing that kept them going. They are a hopeless bunch, but I wonder if the viewers found their tiny bit of pride endearing.
Matsumoto: When the Earthlings were finally protected at the end of the TV series, they thought, "Alright…!"
Tomioka: We were at the final phase, and I knew I had to do that. It's because it was those kids…I don't think that they were thinking about anything else. I think it's probably good that, without even thinking about it, they just moved instinctively. I think that's what makes them beloved characters.
Matsumoto: Surprisingly, from the very beginning, they were in control of their own wheels…
Tomioka: Exactly! They only did what they wanted to do.
Matsumoto: Still, I think they're truly beloved characters. The Final Live Tour is a must see, as you'll get to see the three of them in action.
Tomioka: I myself am looking forward to it. Even after the show ends, I feel that this is one of the interesting aspects of heroic stories, being able to depict the activities of Taiya-kun and his friends in this way again. Above all else, I believe that your voices will be the most important source of power for them!

Wet Beast Wednesday: fairy shrimp
It's week 2 of fresh-uary, the month where I only cover freshwater species for Wet Beast Wednesday. This week's entry is on fairy shrimp, who are neither fairies nor shrimp. Instead, they are members of a mostly freshwater group of crustaceans called Branchipods. These little invertebrates are masters at surviving inhospitable conditions and one group has become famous in both the novelty pet and fish food worlds. You may know them as brine shrimp.
(Image: a female fairy shrimp. It is a small invertebrate somewhat shrimp-like in appearance. It has a large head with a compound eye and two pairs of antennae. The body is long and slender and the front half ans multiple limbs with feathery structures attached to them. The second half ends in a forked tail. This one has a short, transparent egg sac attached to its body just behind the limbs. Small, spherical eggs are visible within. End ID)
Fairy shrimp are members of the family Anostraca, with about 300 known species, many of which are found in very isolated areas. Most species are tiny, maxing out at 6 to 25 mm long, but some species get larger. The largest species, Branchinecta gigas, can reach 170 mm (6.7 in). Being crustaceans, they have exoskeletons, but fairy shrimp exoskeletons are very thin and fragile. The fairy shrimp body plan is divided into three regions, the head, thorax, and abdomen. The head has two compound eyes on stalks, the mouth, and two pairs of antennae. The first pair is long, thin, and unsegmented while the second pair differs depending on sex. Females have a second pair similar to the first pair, while the males have a second pair modified into grasping appendages used to hold onto the female during mating. The thorax is divided into multiple (usually 13 but sometimes more) segments. All but the final two segments are identical and each have a pair of feather-like appendages called phyllopods that act both as swimming limbs and gills. The final two segments of the thorax are fused and have a pair of appendages used for mating. The abdomen consists of 6 segments that don't have appendages. The final segment is the telson, which has a pair of paddle-like structures used for rapid movement and the anus.
(Image: a male fairy shrimp, identifiable as such by the enlarged and leg-like second pair of antennae. End ID)
Fairy shrimp are graceful, but somewhat slow, swimmers who orient themselves belly-up and swim by moving their phyllopods in sequence. They primarily feed on algae, either by filter feeding or scraping it off of rocks and other submerged structures. Some of the larger species are predators of zooplankton and Branchinecta gigas is a hunter of smaller fairy shrimp. Fairy shrimp are found in inland water on all 7 continents. They specialize in seasonal pools and salt lakes. These harsh conditions make fairy shrimp experts as surviving where many other animals cannot. They have a high tolerance for salinity, heat, and low levels of oxygen, all of which help them survive in salt lakes and evaporating pools. A characteristic all fairy shrimp share is the ability for their eggs to enter a state called diapause. This is a form of cryptobiosis where the egg becomes a cyst that stops growth and metabolic activity. Their development effectively pauses until the proper conditions occur and biological activity resumes. Cysts can survive complete dessication, freezing, hypersaline conditions, UV radiation, and the vacuum of space and can remain in this condition for centuries. Diapause also helps the fairy shrimp spread, as their cysts can be carried to new habitat by the weather or other animals.
(Image: a giant fairy shrimp Branchinecta gigas held in somebody's hand to show off its size. It is longer than the person's finger and almost as thing in the thorax. End ID)
Fairy shrimp that live in seasonal pools live fast and die young. Their lifespans last a few months at most because they need to develop to maturity and reproduce before the pool dries up for the year. Most species of fairy shrimp have distinct sexes, but some species are exclusively female and reproduce through parthenogenesis. Males use their modified antennae to grab onto females and transfer sperm to her. The female will either carry her eggs on a sac attached to her abdomen or will maintain them internally. Eggs may be released to settle on the sediment or retained internally until the mother dies and sinks to the bottom. Some species will produce two types of eggs. Early season eggs are produced when water is still abundant in the pool. They will quickly hatch and mature to adulthood. Late season eggs are produced when the pool is drying up. They will settle to the sediment and become cysts, waiting for the next wet season to refill the pool before they hatch. Not all cysts will hatch each wet season, some will wait it out for later years. This ensures that a too-short wet season can't wipe out the whole population. Fairy shrimp living in salt lakes generally don't have to worry about their home drying out, but they maintain the ability to encyst their eggs in case the water gets too salty due to evaporation or too cold or hot. Fairy shrimp in salt lakes are vital to their environments because they regulate the population of phytoplankton and bacteria.
(Image: a close-up of somebody's hand holding some water and 9 red fairy shrimp. End ID)
Fairy shrimp are a major food source to many animals, especially birds. Their isolated or inhospitable habitats keep fairy shrimp safe from many predators, such as fish, but not from birds. Ducks and flamingos are some of the most prominent predators of fairy shrimp. Birds also help spread the shrimp, as the cysts can stick to their bodies or even pass through their digestive systems to be carried to other pools. Humans have also started using fairy shrimp as fish food in aquariums and aquaculture. There is now a multi-million dollar industry based around the Great Salt Lake in Utah and Mono Lake and San Fransisco Bay in California based around harvesting cysts and adult fairy shrimp for sale. The fairy shrimp used in aquaculture are almost all brine shrimp of the genus Artemia. Brine shrimp are also used as model organisms in science and as novelty pets under the brand name of sea monkeys. Brine shrimp cysts are easy to find in many pet and aquarium supply stores and will hatch quickly once exposed to water. Many wild fairy shrimp populations are threatened. Because of how isolated their pools can be, any damage to the pool can endanger the species. Pollution and habitat loss are threatening many species while human-caused movement of fairy shrimp cysts to new pools can lead to them harming native species.

ChrisMD- Charity Match
The sun was shining bright over Wembley stadium, and the electric buzz of excitement filled the air. It was the annual Sidemen Charity Match, and this year, it was bigger than ever. The teams were set, as usual the Sidemen were taking on the YouTube Allstars, a collection of the best creators from around the globe. Among them were ChrisMD and Y/N, two creators known for their humour, skill, and years of camaraderie.
What no one knew besides a select few close friends in their content creator circle was that Chris and Y/N had recently taken their friendship to the next level. After years of banter-filled collaborations and shared late-night editing sessions, they’d finally admitted their feelings two months ago. Since then, they’d been navigating the thrill of their new relationship while keeping it private. Chris had done the whole relationship in public thing before and it hadn’t worked out so he was revealing in keeping something just for him. It wasn’t that surprising to people who knew the pair, their friendship had developed in a big way after Chris and Shannon broke up it just happened to coincide with Y/N’s rise in popularity and moving into the same office building as Chris, Will and some others. It got to the point where Chris was knocking on Y/N’s door borrowing things constantly, bringing tea and coffee and sometimes lunch. That then developed into going out for drinks after a long day editing, his mind blew when she had told him she had never seen Lord of The Rings so he turned up at her flat with the films, food and neither of them were sure if it was the tiredness or the fact they both ended up cuddled up on the sofa but they shared a very soft, and sweet kiss. Neither of them looked back ever since.
Due to her rise in fame Y/N had booked her ticket in the Youtube All Stars team, it was the first time a female was playing in the match so the pressure was in a little bit, most of the people in the game knew about the relationship but it was still a big event with many eyes watching and she first of all had to act casual around Chris but also she felt pressure to perform well and reverse the stereotype that women didn’t know anything about ball. Now she wasn’t an expert by any means, especially compared to some other players like Chris or Theo but she understood the rules and had an okay aim, she just hoped she wouldn’t sieze up in front of thousands upon thousands of people.
Having dozens of content creators in one place meant that cameras were constantly on. In order to try and stop anyone from catching and posting any footage they didn’t want anyone else to see the couple seated themselves separately on the bus, Chris sitting next to Will with Y/N behind next to George who was also making his charity match debut.
“Please tell mw you’re as nervous as me,” Y/N breathed out to George as she leaned her head on the window.
“It’ll be fine. I’m used to making a complete tit out of myself anyway and absolutely nothing can be worse than that bloody dating video I did,” George replied with a smile. Y/N sent half a smile back before nodding and looking at her phone. It wasn’t like she was purposely being anti-social but in anxious times it really helped her to play with something with her hands to calm her down. George noticed and elbowed her a little, their friendship had blossomed somewhat since Y/N’s relationship with Chris had started and the two had got to know each other quite well.
“Look you’ll be fine. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that you can’t possibly do worse than the year Chris legged it from Noah Beck and missed a penalty,” George said with a cheeky smile earning an honest laugh.
“Yeah that helps, thanks a lot.”
It was the day of the match and in the bustling dressing room of the YouTube Allstars, Y/N adjusted her jersey, her name emblazoned proudly on the back. Her hair was tied into a ponytail, a few strands escaping to frame her face, although it was deliberate now it would probably be fizz later on in the match. Despite her confident appearance, she was nervous, Chris could tell.
"You good?" Chris asked, leaning casually against the lockers, his cheeky grin instantly calming her nerves. His smile had almost a cheeky boyish charm about it and it was one of her favourite things about him.
"Just pre-match jitters," Y/N admitted, lacing up her boots. "It’s not every day you play in front of thousands of people, and millions online."
"You’ll smash it, people seemed to like you in my videos,” Chris said, his voice soft but steady. Y/N had indeed appeared in two of Chris’s videos over the past three months to try and ease her into the whole football thing. It was actually the first video that sparked the rumours she was going to be in the charity match, luckily there were no other rumours centred around the relationship. Chris was very careful with the edit but this time there would be no edit. It was playing on both of their minds but as ever Chris was the one who was acting calm. He was the epitome of a swan, all calm and even confident on the surface but what you never saw was the feet kicking wildly under the surface. Still he had the smile on his face as he spoke again "Plus I’ve seen you in training. They won’t know what hit them."
Y/N smiled. Chris always knew exactly what to say. "Thanks, coach."
"Anytime," he replied, winking, he looked around before placing a small kiss on Y/N’s cheek before scarpering, leaving a small blush creeping up Y/N’s face.
The stadium erupted in cheers as the players walked out onto the pitch. Y/N couldn’t help but soak in the atmosphere, her heart pounding as she waved at the crowd. The YouTube Allstars lineup was strong, but the Sidemen were formidable opponents. Y/N knew they had their work cut out for them. As was custom they all walked out holding the hands of kids and Y/N tried to stop her mind from wandering about Chris as a father.
The teams lined up and everyone shook hands, before everyone knew it the whistle blew, and the game began at a blistering pace. The Sidemen scored early, of course it was Simon it was always Simon and it sent the crowd into a frenzy. Y/N, playing as a winger, was determined to make an impact. She sprinted up and down the pitch, linking up with Chris who was in midfield. Y/N felt comfortable playing with Chris obviously, she hoped a pass to him would be safe, and a couple of times the pass meant the ball was then played down the other end but the Sidemen defence was strong and each time the ball ended up back on the other side of the field.
By the 23rd minute, the score was still 1-0 to the Sidemen. The YouTube Allstars were pressing hard for an equalizer, and Y/N found herself in a promising position. Chris intercepted a pass in midfield and looked up to see her sprinting down the left flank.
"Y/N!" he called, launching the ball in her direction with pinpoint accuracy.
Y/N controlled it expertly, darting past JJ and faking out Vik. She was now one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Billy Wingrove. Time seemed to slow as she steadied herself, drew back her leg, and struck the ball with as much power as she had in her legs. Time then felt like it stood still as she watched the black and white ball rise towards the goal, just skimming past Billy’s fingers.
The net rippled. Goal.
The stadium erupted. Fans jumped to their feet, cheering wildly as Y/N ran toward the corner flag, her hands in the air. Her teammates swarmed her in celebration, but Chris was the first to reach her his face in the biggest smile. Without thinking, he threw his arms around her and planted a kiss on her cheek.
"You did it!" he exclaimed, his eyes alight with pride.
Y/N laughed, her cheeks flushing not just from the exertion but from the kiss. She gave him a playful shove. "All your assist." The conversation ended as Will, George, and Theo started piling on the couple with the other team mates slowly adding to the celebration.
The moment was over in seconds, but it didn’t escape the eagle-eyed viewers watching the livestream. Social media and the chat lit up instantly.
“DID CHRIS JUST KISS Y/N?!” “Wait, what’s going on??” “That wasn’t just a friendly kiss, was it?” “I SHIP THIS SO HARD.” “OMG THEY LOOK SO CUTE TOGETHER.”
Clips of the moment were already being shared on Twitter and TikTok, with fans analyzing every frame. Speculation ran rampant, and hashtags like #ChrisAndY/N and #YouTubeCoupleGoals began trending.
Back in the dressing room, Y/N could feel the weight of the moment sinking in. Chris sat beside her, handing her a water bottle.
"You okay?" he asked, his voice low so the others wouldn’t hear.
"Yeah," Y/N said, though her mind was racing. "I just... I think people might have noticed the kiss."
Chris rubbed the back of his neck, looking sheepish. "Sorry, I didn’t think. I was just excited for you."
Y/N smiled, her nerves easing. "It’s okay. It was sweet. But... what do we do if people ask?"
Chris hesitated, then shrugged. "Maybe it’s not such a bad thing if they know?"
Y/N blinked, surprised. They’d agreed to keep their relationship private for now, but the way Chris was looking at her—like he didn’t care what the world thought—made her heart swell.
"We’ll figure it out," she said finally, giving his hand a quick squeeze.
The second half was just as intense as the first. Y/N and Chris continued to have a blinding game, both of the, their connection on the field was matching their connection in real life. By the final whistle, the score was tied at 5-4 to the Youtube Allstars with Chris scoring a free kick, as proud as Y/N was of him she knew this was not going to help his better than most premier league footballers comment.
As the teams lined up for the handshake at the end of the match, fans in the stands chanted both their names, a testament to their standout performances.
As the players left the pitch, they were bombarded by cameras and interviewers. Y/N and Chris managed to slip away to the YouTube Allstars’ private area, where they were met by their friends George, Will, and Theo as well as Harry.
“Well let’s hope your little spectacle of love went unnoticed,” Theo joked as Y/N went red with Chris putting an arm around her waist and pulling her close.
“I just hope Stephen didn’t mention it in the commentary,” Y/N replied.
He didn’t, to Stephen’s credit but meanwhile, the internet was ablaze. Fans flooded Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok with clips, memes, and theories. Some dug up old videos of Chris and Y/N, pointing out moments that seemed suspiciously flirty in hindsight. Others were simply thrilled, declaring them the new power couple of YouTube.
Chris and Y/N decided to address it that evening with a joint Instagram post. It was a candid photo of them laughing together, taken during the match. The caption read:
"Well, the secret’s out. ❤️ Thanks for all the love today. It means the world to us."
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Fans flooded the comments with support, and fellow creators chimed in with congratulatory messages. Chris and Y/N spent the rest of the evening scrolling through their phones, laughing at memes and feeling relieved that their secret was finally out.
"Well," Y/N said, leaning her head on Chris’s shoulder, "I guess this means no more sneaking around."
Chris grinned, wrapping an arm around her. "Good. I was getting tired of pretending you weren’t the best thing that ever happened to me."
Y/N looked up at him, her eyes shining. "You’re pretty alright too."
They laughed, the chaos of the day melting away as they basked in the glow of their new chapter—together, and finally free to share it with the world.
