In today's Adventuring Party it's mentioned that Fabian's first experience with the other dance bards was basically a sink or swim acceptance of their Thespian Energy™. The only way to survive was to embrace the shameless absurdity of the situation or be destroyed. Fabian succeeded.
As I thought about the Gorgug's talk with Porter , it might be a similar situation, but with Barbarians. Porter outright told Gorgug that he doesn't embrace his own rage, and it's self evident throughout their conversation. No well worded argument as to why Gorgug should multiclass would have ever convinced him, I think. When Porter mishandles Cloaca, Gorgug tries to politely correct him before simply giving up.
In this instance, Porter has made himself a massive wall blocking Gorgug's desires, and is being incredibly unfair to Gorgug. What does Gorgug do? He simply accepts it. Gorgug will rage and put his blood on the line for his friends, but has some issues with standing up for himself. I can think of two, maybe three instances where he has. 1) The first fight with Fabian. 2) When he slams Ragh into the lockers. And 3) when he tries to correct Telemaine on how to pronounce his name and that one was a purely verbal conversation that went nowhere.
In short, I think the correct answer to the conversation was for Gorgug to get mad. To respond to the clear unfairness and go "Hey fuck you!!" To punch through that wall and go "This isn't a fucking question, I'm going to multiclass." In the end, Gorgug still has yet to embrace being a barbarian.

I think Fabian's enemy in the Rat Grinders will be opposing him on the front of Dance rather than fighter both cause I think they would've tried out for the Owlbears + it doesn't really fit Fabian's arc rn so here's my pitch...A trope that brennan hates...the ego driven player at the table who doesn't help the rest of the party and who acts like "so that just happened...anyways it's my turn FINALLY". So my pitch is essentially an ego driven dancer that Fabian can dance battle. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Let's Talk About: Fantasy High Junior Year and Mall Madness
Tumblr media
I am at a loss of words. Like, I am still processing what happened in this episode and I do not think I will ever stop processing the things that happened… So we'll just stick with the bits that stuck to me this episode:
Even though Ally is playing up Kristen's unreliability, they still shine through in moments that count--like when Siobhan asked if they wanted Adaine to hit Cassandra and Ally immediately went "No!"
Zac's southern roots really came though with an "ooh that's dangerous" when Lou had Fabian capoeira his way under a 'roided up centaur.
And then A BACKFLIP TO A TABLE?! LOU?!
Siobhan, Zac, and Murph immediately knowing how Kalina is feeling via Brenna's description of how her tail twitches--and how she starts moving her shoulder almost imperceptibly is very cat people of them. Ally's "does she need scratchies" though? They clearly do not have a cat.
Riz flossing looks like Kugrash doing the hairy baby dance.
This exchange: "He's just made five attacks." "Is that allowed?"
Nonna Crits is the new villain for me. She really made sure the important dice rolls fail. No matter how many chances Brennan gave the players to succeed.
Gorgug putting together Lydia Barkrock's chest crystal with what's going on with Cassandra at the mall is very smart…emotionally. Which is the kind of smart that Gorgug is. He has high emotional intelligence.
"This is some Gilear shit." They finally get it!
Gorgug got a 21 Arcana. Sure, it was overshadowed by Siobhan's 24, but a 21!
Bardic Shrimpspiration!
And then everything else happens. And… not gonna lie, I'm where Kristen is at when the Bad Kids had to go through the party. Just staring a thousand mile stare.
What in the name of a-razed-Sylvaire-because-of-a-vengeful-elven-oracle is going to happen next?

you've got me seeing (through different eyes)
The scariest thing about being possessed by Baron, Fabian realizes with hindsight, was how little his cognition needed to change to see Riz as his romance partner. The second scariest thing was probably the urge to brutally maim his dear friends or his complete loss of autonomy. Or maybe it was the ability to spin his head around like an owl? He hadn’t found the time to make a ranked list, yet. He’s been busy. He had to fight a bunch of enemies, escape a dream version of his friend’s haunted house, and then deal with the revelation that he’s totally in love with his best friend.
-
After Baron's Game, Fabian realizes some things about himself. 567 words, left ambiguous if the Fabriz is requited or unrequited. Read on AO3 or under the readmore.
Or maybe he isn’t. He can explain it away to himself, if he really tries. Tell himself that these emotions are just a residual side effect of the whole Baron thing. Perhaps if he talked to Adaine, she would tell him that she too was feeling the same way. Then they could laugh the whole thing off, and it’d become a funny story they all joke about for years to come, like Kristen and her ribbon-dancing.
But deep down, he knows that he’s just kidding himself.
When Baron possessed him, it wasn’t as if Fabian was kicked out of his head. It was more like he was a car, and Baron forced him out of the driver's seat and into the back. He was still along for the ride.
And to overextend this metaphor, Baron only needed to make a slight right turn to get Fabian’s mind onto Romance Partner Blvd - no extensive detours required.
When he attacked Adaine to defend Riz’s honor, it felt so natural. Well, not the Adaine part - getting there did require a longer psychological road trip from Baron. But protecting Riz, The Ball, His Ball -
It was as natural as breathing.
Looking back, he can see the signs. Special attention paid to him, extra time spent with him. And when a cute girl tried to kiss him, his first instinct was to call him. Get his advice. This isn’t new, Fabian has to admit. All Baron did was force him to see the possibility.
And now he’s scared shitless.
Because if he fucks this up and makes it awkward - it would ruin everything. If things got bad enough, it might even split the party. Not only would all of his friendships be fractured, but Riz - Fabian imagines him at Lord Salazar Edge's College of Lone Adventurers, and it breaks his heart.
Nonetheless, he can’t imagine not doing something about this. Now that he’s aware of this yearning, it feels nigh all-consuming. Anytime he sees Riz, his heart rate skyrockets and his mental faculties leave him. It’s ridiculous.
He has to act upon this.
Deep breath. He could do this. Definitely. He is going to woo The Ball - or at the very least, proposition romance in such a way that won’t end their friendship if he’s turned down. And it was going to be very easy, because he is suave and charming and Maximum Legend.
Sure, his only real romantic experience was a few bad make out sessions with Aelwyn and an ambiguous but tragic relationship with Ecaf. But it couldn’t be that hard, could it? He was a desirable young man. He would make a wonderful partner.
… at the very least, he’d be a much better partner than Baron. That was a start, wasn’t it?

Headcanons for Junior Year
Cassandra still has Kalina as a familiar. I have two ideas for this
Number one is Kalina was hurting the whole time due to being a literal plague and she was also under the influence of the Nightmare King's power so she's better now. Still standoffish and a trickster but in more of a "tired, goth older sister" way
Number two is that she's a grouchy house cat and is stuck in this tiny body that has a love/hate relationship with the Bad Kids (especially Riz). Like one day she's wrapped around his neck till she claws his nose and runs off. She can't talk either so all that pent-up anger is in a tiny body
I just want more Riz and Kalina pls! They were so good together SY
Garthy Obrien and Aguefort have a nice, long "chat" behind closed doors… It ends up with the both of them deciding how they are going to Co-parent Ayda but Aguefort does end up with a scar in his abdomen.
Ayda substitute teaches a Magical Theory class Adaine and Fig have to take when the teacher leaves for maternity. Hijinx ensue.
Fabian and Aelwyn break up or have already broken up by the time JY starts (i love how most of the fandom doesn't like these two together, lol)
Kristen and Tracker go on break while Tracker is away and Kristen is suffering in silence while Tracker is partying and having a lot of fun (same vibes as Priya and Pete)
All of Fig's Dads (Jawbone, Gilear, and Gorthalax) go get drinks every other month, one-month Sandra-Lynn and Garthy come and drink them all under the table (Sandra-Lynn was banned after that. Garthy still occasionally comes around)
When those nights happen all of the Bad Kids have a giant sleepover and completely take over the first floor of Mordred Manor (Jawbone proceeding to play hopscotch around them to not wake up his spare children)
Nobody actually addresses the Night Yorb during Junior Year and if somebody does Brennan goes in his true New York accent "what Night Yorb?????"
Fabian and Zelda go to both dance classes and kickboxing together, becoming friends around the winter of Sophmore Year
Fabian and Sam do not get along well. Mostly due to the fact, they are both dramatic rich bitches who are fighting over Zelda but also over the fact Sam is mean to Gorgug and Fabian goes "only I am allowed to be a bitch with my friends? Fuck off, Nightingale."
Antiope and Riz shared some sort of stealth elective class and accidentally became good friends? Like, they both watch their gangs of idiots tiredly and corral them up and take them to get ice cream.
On the other hand, Kristen kinda dreads her religious studies course due to Ostentasia being loud and snarky but also kinda appreciates it? Like, you know those class clowns that get on your nerves but they state the obvious when everyone is done with the teacher's shit? Yeah, that's their relationship
She does chill with Yelle tho, like they both smoke weed then go to pet stores and animal shelters and play with animals until they pass out on the floor.
Penny and Adaine are both nerds and Penny is Adaine's tutor when it comes to the history of spells, who made them and why (because Adaine is a practical caster <3)
I have way too many ideas, some of them are on the bingo board :)

I wanda'd in
NOT ALL WHO WANDA ARE LOST
SITTING OUTSIDE AND LISTENING TO BARD CLASS
watching Kristen deal with school and stuff and deal with Cassandra makes me slightly uncomfortable. not in a bad way but in a way that I relate to it a bit too much and it's a bit too real. i too had extreme trouble with school and I also have issues with pushing important people away when trying to focus on myself and it ruins a lot of my relations. I relate to Kristen too much in the worst ways and that hits closer to home than I like. I love Kristen but man. Too close
"Things can be bad, and things can be good, but they all can be true."
I worry about Kristen going to Cassandra's realm. I am going into a worry. I have bad feeling.
the sound design is so good

What do u think james would have been like as a father
Oh boy, here we go.
Anon, this might be my favourite ask ever. Ever, do you hear me? So take a seat because this is going to be a long one.
It goes without saying that he would have been incredible, yes, but in what way?
(Under the cut because it got too long)
I don't think Harry was planned, purely because of the war. If it hadn't been for that, I think he would have still wanted to be a dad, without a doubt, and a young one at that: being raised by elderly parents probably made him realise that he was luckier than his parents, because they never got to see him grow up, grow old. Little did he know...
James adored being a young dad. He loved the fun bits and the ugly bits. Harry helped him become the man he was destined to be. In the 15 months they shared together (don't worry I'll answer your question in a moment), James was forced to learn some hard truths and make tough decisions. I've always seen him as someone who had a 'black and white' mindset when it comes to right or wrong: it was simple for him, and he couldn't really understand why people did bad things when they knew they were wrong. Well, he knew why, but it only started making sense when he became a father, because suddenly he realised how much he had underestimated the privilege of being able to choose. Having a kid during a war took a toll on him and changed him, because now he was forced to decide whether he was a father first or a soldier. And it was a choice he had to make every day.
He also had to choose what kind of father he was going to be. The kind who comes back from a mission and drinks himself into oblivion, or the one who goes straight to his wife and son and despite being bone-tired and with muscles that ache at every step, he's there for them with a smile on his face. And don't get me wrong, I do believe he did get drunk and felt utterly defeated sometimes. He could have done that and he knew no one would have judged him for it, but he couldn't let the bad days outnumber the good ones.
Let's pretend nothing bad happened on Halloween 1981, and that Voldemort died and everyone got their happy ending:
James is the kind of dad who has long conversations with his babbling two year old, where he pretends to talk about politics and books and Quidditch without using baby voices.
He does use baby voices sometimes, though. Mainly when Harry won't eat his peas or when James has to change his nappy (honestly I hope wizards use them, otherwise the poor babies just have to sit in their poop until someone vanishes it). He does impressions of all his Hogwarts professors, but Harry's favourite is Filch, he laughs so much he makes James laugh too.
He sings 'Beautiful Boy' when Harry can't fall asleep, a smile painted on his face, and when Harry's brows start to relax he whispers the rest of the lyrics, brushing his hair until his eyes close and his breath becomes even (credits to this post for the headcanon).
He's an extremely concerned toddler parent, because Harry learns to run first and walk second. The little boy hates hats, and he always comes back from his walks with his hair all tangled and with leaves in it (yes, Harry dives into leaf piles before his parents can stop him). James, heartbroken, takes a bottle of Sleekeazy's and pours the product on Harry's hair, apologising the whole time.
He watches him play and talk to his toys for Merlin knows how long, hypnotised by his brilliant son.
When Harry accidentally makes Sirius' pancake float towards his plate, James picks up his son and starts dancing with him around the kitchen, singing a made up song that Sirius will mock him for every time he has the chance. By noon, James has not only decided he's going to throw a party in honour of Harry's first accidental magic, he's also decided the menu and planned every activity. He invites Fabian and Gideon and asks to bring their nephews too because the more the merrier, and that's how Ron becomes Harry's best friend.
I also thinks James would absolutely love to have a big family, so in my headcanon Harry has at least a couple of siblings. Imagine being surrounded by all those Potters... A dream for some (James) a nightmare for others (probably Petunia, who is straight up horrified the one time she pays them a visit).
James teaches Harry to fly, reads him stories every night and they even have movie nights every Wednesday, even the day after a full moon, where James falls asleep on the sofa as they watch Star Wars, and Harry goes out like a light shortly after him, head on his chest, drooling on James' shirt.
But most of all, James listens. He truly listens. He makes sure Harry never doubts his worth. He's the kind of dad who isn't afraid to show his emotions, and probably cries as Harry boards the Hogwarts Express for the first time.
When Harry gets in trouble at school for the first time, James realises that lecturing him is not that different from when he had to give out detentions as Head Boy... Except that it is, because when James has to tell him that it's wrong to put Padfoot's hairs in Malfoy's potion, Harry asks him why, and he tilts his head exactly like Lily does when she challenges him, and this kid has her eyes and James' knowing smile, but he's also clever in a way James and Lily are not, and James doesn't know what to do with this information.
Honestly, I have so many more headcanons and if I had to write all of them this post would never see the light of day, so I'll stop here and maybe I'll make a part two, who knows.
In conclusion, this James isn't a perfect dad, but he's a wonderful one. He might be too strict sometimes, and other times too lenient; he might disagree with Harry on some things, and they might fight and raise their voices. But James does everything in his power not to make Harry go to sleep angry or sad, and if it does happen, he makes sure to wake him up with a kiss on his forehead and a hug. Or maybe lots of hugs, because James is a very affectionate dad. With his parents in his life, Harry doesn't doubt for one moment that he's not worthy of being loved.

Bucky Applebees Goes to a Party
Bucky didn’t think he’d get this far, he was sure someone would have turned him around but here he was standing on Fabian Seacasters front lawn as his sister rode a demon motorcycle dressed as a shrimp into a pool of tartar sauce that she somehow lit on fire. He listened as people chanted her name and called her a legend. He watched as teens all around him split off to drink, dance, talk, or … well other activities Bucky wasn't sure he was even allowed to think about.
The night whirled by him but he was always searching for Kristen, finding her in different crowds of people usually with one of her friends by her side. He watched her from afar, watched as she laughed and joked, as she drank from a solo cup, as she talked to Buddy Dawn of all people, and just couldn’t help but question it all. His sister had been the chosen of Helio and she had left all that, left him and his brothers for this? For these people, she called friends? He didn’t understand it but he also couldn’t stop watching, so he stayed and watched.
Eventually, the party started to slow down and people started to go home but not Bucky. Instead, he sat out on the lawn and watched the dawn come not knowing what to do but knowing that he would be in trouble when he got home and that he had found none of the answers he was looking for.
“Bucky?” Suddenly Kristen was standing next to him, a solo cup in her hand and a crooked cowboy hat on her head.
“Um, uh hi … I’m not meant to be here.” He stumbled out.
“No you’re not, you are out waaaay past curfew.” Kristen smiled as she sat next to him.
“I know, I’m going straight to hell.” Bucky said sadly after few quiet moments.
“No, you’re not. It takes a lot more than breaking curfew once to go to hell.” Kristen told him taking a large swig of her drink and grimacing.
“How would you know?” Bucky almost spat at her but his curiosity came out instead.
“I’ve been to heaven and I’ve been to hell. I’ve met Helio and Sol, I’ve created a god, killed a god, and saved a god. I know some things.” She gave him a hard look before looking back at the horizon.
“I … I didn’t … when did?” Bucky could barely comprehend what she was saying.
He’d heard rumors about Kristen of course both at church and now in the halls at Auegfort but all of that had to be nonsense, none of it sounded like his older sister. Kristen didn’t kill dragons and date werewolves, she made friendship bracelets and healed bruises. She wasn’t some big hero, she was a sinner, an apostate. She was just a teenage girl, just his older sister. There was no way the rumors at Auegfort could be true about her, he would know … wouldn’t he?
“I’ve been busy these last two years.” She winked at him.
“Right. Busy.” Bucky’s voice hardened again as he thought of her absence.
“I’m sorry Bucky, I’m sorry I left you and Bricker and Cork. Thats not what big sisters are meant to do, I … miss you all so much every day but I had to leave.” Kristens voice wobbled as she spoke.
“Why?”
“Because I lost my faith in Helio and I knew I wouldn’t be welcome anymore. Our parents are not accepting people and they would not accept me, my beliefs, or my life.” Kristen explained.
“How could you lose your faith? You were chosen!” Bucky is almost pleading with her.
“When I died I asked why there was so much suffering but Helio didn’t answer me instead he sent me back here. After that I … I’ve been searching for meaning, why things happen and I think I’m awfully close to knowing that we … well that we will never know why there is suffering but that's not a bad thing. Doubt is okay, the unknown isn’t always terrifying and it's perfectly fine to just not know.” Kristen is staring at the horizon now and a tear is on her cheek but all Bucky feels is disappointment, confusion, and anger.
Bucky shakes his head, “Faith is what matters.”
“Faith in what?” Kristen asked him, her voice harder her eyes looking at him now.
“Faith in Helio.”
“Only faith in Helio matters?”
“What else is there?” Bucky asks quietly as if the very question itself would hurt him.
“Everything. There is a whole world out there Bucky, there are planes of existence that would blow your mind, and faith in Helio is … if it's something you truly believe in, something you study and know with all the good and the bad then that is your faith but I … well I believe in something else.” She told him.
“I don’t understand how two years at High School can change someone so much.” Bucky said after a few moments of silence.
“One day it’ll be the first weekend after your first week of Junior year at Auegfort and we’ll see how much you’ve changed.” She smiled widely at him.
“I love you Bucky, and I love Bricker and Cork. You can always come to me if you need help, or someone to talk to or a place to stay. I’m still your big sister, nothing can ever change that.” She gave him a side hug before getting up, dusting off her wranglers and walking into Seacaster Manor.
Bucky stayed where he was for a few more minutes before finding his bike in the bushes he’d hid it in on the way here hours before and rode home. The lights were still off and Bucky let out a grateful prayer as he managed to slip in through the back door and up to his bedroom his parents none the wiser that he’d been to his first high school party and talked to his big sister.

it's so fun when brennan lee mulligan or the players do something at least partially on a whim or prompted by comedy and then later manage to bring it around to meaningfully further plot or character. like when the party asks for sheets in kei lumennara and fabian manages to put out fires with the magic elf bedsheets and regains confidence and finds himself through dancing. or when the players probably forgot gilear is in their party and it's revealed an episode later that he's literally been stuck in a wheel for hours. and when gorgug asks for books about friendship at the compass points library because he wants to help fabian feel better and he finds the friendship section with a whole secret room and then later ayda is talking to adaine about friendship and reveals she built a whole section about it because she was lonely, and i immediately cried

even more bad kids and co head canons because why not
fig made them watch lemonade mouth because it reminds her of how they all met
aelwyn and zayn have secret dance partys when Mordreds empty
gorgug always makes breakfast at sleepovers because he likes making food for the people he loves
jawbone had a movie night with adaine, aelwyn and kristen where they watched a bunch of movies they weren't allowed to watch growing up
kristen continues to make crab nachos even after the rest of the bad kids shamed her for it
gorgug has a secret playlist of sappy love songs that remind him of zelda
fabian held a drag night at his house, the rest of the bad boys joined him in drag
ragh looked the best because aelwyn taught him how to do makeup
Fabian stans Dolly Parton
Kristen made the bad kids a group tiktok account that blew up because riz would post unhinged content at 4am
gorgug always wanted a little sister so he always gets excited when he gets to be a big brother to fig while on tour
speaking of siblings, adaine uses scrying on kristens brothers every couple of weeks just to make sure they're safe because kristen has been on edge since fighting daybreak in hell
aelwyns first job was as a bouncer at the black pit, she always let's the seven maidens in for free
zayn and jawbone bond over how goth disco music is
adaine and tracker always make sure that the graves at Mordred are always clean and well kept
fig always leaves "the bad kidz were here" carved/burnt into something when they visit somewhere cool
fabian made sandralynn promise to not tell anyone about him eating glass
adaine made a boggy plush with a sending stone in it to talk to aelwyn when the bad kids go in adventures
she might of let it slip to sklonda

[ 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐊 ] ― sender recognises receiver at a masquerade party
For Ellis and fennec and Carol and Fabian!
Maybe something for the Victorian au!
The Five Senses
Tumblr media
As usual the Miladies of the Verdeville house were invited to one of the most luxurious parties in town... many Bachelors waiting to have a chance to dance with Milady Ellis and Miss Carol on the Mask ball... every mask was different, every dress as carefully crafted as possible... as Ellis already noticed Carol being surrounded by many suitors who chatted her up, she broke away to seek the dance floor, yet she hoped eventually one nobleman would ask her for a dance... she saw the different duos and began swooning as she noticed someone holding out his hand to her... his statue was small, the hat covered a lot of his hair yet something seemed familiar.
"May I ask for this dance?"
She recognized his voice too. Who could he be.
"I would gladly lend you my hand to dance. "
A slight giggle escaped her as she placed her hand in his... he seemed not that professional but made well to adapt his movement with hers... sway around with her... despite his short height he still put enough effort to be a good lead, yet looking into his eyes she gasped suddenly.
"Fennec... is that you... I can't believe it... you look so fancy."
"You remember the costume maker in the opera.... he said you only have your ball of your dreams once in your life... I may not be a good nobleman but."
She shook her hand and looked at him smiling brightly.
"I love you made the effort just to dance with me, you could have gone in trouble with your original work."
He nodded a bit shyly as they continued their dance a little.
"Listen Ellis I..."
"My dear gentleman, may I have a dance with this Lady as well."
As Fennec got interupted by another person who wanted to change partners he was grumpy but then sighed and let Ellis hand go.
"You can tell me what you wanna say later, thanks for dancing with me."
As she left he walked off looking outside the Balcony.
"This isn't just something I can say."
Tumblr media
While Ellis had her dance... Carol was still a bit overwhelmed by so many people who wanted to ask her for a dance first, saying she needed a break and settling to the side, watching the scene... yet one person didn't listen... one Well known Nobleman she knew for a While.
"Mister Innochi, didn't I tell you I am not interest."
"Madam Verdeville, I am just here to make humble offering."
He put a fancy bracelet on her arm... eyes as striking as usual trying to get what was going on with her.
"I would also fancy if you were to join me in a dan-"
"No thank you... and you could keep your gifts, they are wasted on me..."
"Is this still about the trade?"
"Yes it is... my father almost got in danger cause of your family."
He bowed and took off his head.
"I hope maybe one day you will forgive me."
As he left however another masked figure apporached her... a dashing suit and a smile on his face.
"Miss Verdeville, may I?"
"Its you right?"
Her face crept up a light blush as he pulled her by her hips closer.
"I don't know what you are talking about, but I sure came to steal something away."
"As usual it seems..." She sighs as she followed him to the dancefloor.
"Sometimes I did wish you came for me..."
"And risk all those suitors dragging me into a fight? No way? Althought technically I do come for what makes you beautiful."
She grew a bit redder as she felt a faint touch on her hand just for her to get off the bracelet herself.
"Take it, but at least stay a little long for this dance, thats all I can ask."
"As you wish, Milady."
She enjoyed the close feeling... the chats they had, even if they drawn a lot of eyes of the room on them... so after wards she agreed quick to help him get out as unseen as possible, as she went to the balcony with him and he was about to leave she still hesitated.
"Whats the matter? Missing me already?"
"I am just intrigued is all... I rather prefer you take these slimey jewelry of me and use if for what you said you would than me keeping it an letting it collect dust."
"I take that as an invitation to the next party then."
"If you grant me another dance again, then yes."
Both gave another a smile before he left of the balcony... her sighing as he walked off.
"Why did I have to fall for someone like this?..."

i saw you from afar
Tumblr media
Linda is hosting a family reunion this year. It’s a big step, according to Daniel, seeing as she’d isolated herself far away from her side when she was married to Frank. It’s been ten years since the divorce, Linda is now a grandmother, and she wants to make things right. So for the first time in years, she stops acting like Mrs. DeLuca, sprung from the suburban ground fully formed with a Kitchenaid mixer in her hands, and remembers how to be Linda, who grew up loved on the South side.
And, as the uncle to Linda’s first grandchild, Sam is invited to the reunion.
For the first hour, it’s a pretty good party. Lots of hugging, even and especially from people Sam has never met. Loud music, two and a half decades behind, which Sam doesn’t mind. He’s a big fan of Lou Rawls. Love is a hurtin’ thing, after all. Everybody takes turns holding his year-old nephew, Michael, and there’s a newly twenty-one-year-old cousin in the corner, pretending to like beer but dumping it into Linda’s plants whenever he thinks people aren’t looking. Sam smiles. He’s only twenty-four, but he remembers being that kid.
And then a fucking model walks in. Walks in and right up to the kid dumping his beer into the potted plants.
Apparently, this is the beer kid’s brother. Daniel’s cousin Eddie. He looks a little like if you brought a commemorative plate of Elvis to life, which, at five years old, Sam once tried to do. He’s gorgeous, and Sam can’t stop looking at him. When Sam asks Daniel about him, he says he’s twenty-six and working on a Ph.D. at Wayne State. His parents are really proud, Daniel says. And then he points at Sam in recognition.
“Oh, you’d probably like him,” he says. “He’s getting a Ph.D. in history, but he writes about music history. Something about the pop-star-making machine.”
Sam’s heart does the waltz clog. This can’t be fucking real.
Eventually, he walks over to Daniel’s cousin Eddie. When they make eye contact, they recognize each other. They know what to do. The conversation’s friendly, but they both know they’re flirting.
“So, Daniel tells me you write about pop stars,” Sam says. “How about that Fabian?”
Eddie lets out a surprised laugh. Sam couldn’t be prouder.
“You know, I think you’re the first person other than my dissertation chair to ask me about Fabian,” he says. “Most people want to know about Tiffany.”
Sam shakes his head.
“Why would I wanna know about Tiffany?” he asks. “I lived through Tiffany.”
Eddie laughs.
“I prefer to look at it as surviving Tiffany,” he says.
Sam shrugs.
“What can I say?” he asks again. “I’m a sucker for ‘Shivers.’”
Eddie winks at him and says, “What can I say? So am I.”
No matter where Eddie goes around the house, Sam’s eyes can’t seem to stop following him. And every time, Eddie seems to look back at him – to really see him there. Sam’s throat is dry no matter how much Coke he drinks, no matter how often he switches to water. This is different than Sadie’s friend Jimmy in ‘86, from other guys he’s met at concerts and record stores around the city since then. Something about the way Eddie looks at him. Something about big brown eyes and that smile – smart, smarter than most people, but not arrogant about it. Something that feels familiar even though they’ve only just met.
They find their way back to each other in the backyard, behind the garage. Sam takes back a few garbage bags, and Eddie leans up against the wall with a cigarette. He’s a few inches shorter than Sam, but he seems tall. No, that’s not it. He seems grand. After Sam throws the bags away, he leans up against the wall next to Eddie, just talking. The thing he’s best at. Eddie’s not bad at it, either. He’s got a lot to say – about pop stars, about living in Motown, about Adorno and Horkheimer (“Fuck anybody who doesn’t like jazz,” Eddie says, and Sam laughs. He’ll get along with Charlie, surely, if they ever meet. God, Sam wants them to meet.). After a few minutes, the conversation turns to dance.
“I always wanted to be a dancer,” Sam says.
“Why didn’t you?”
Sam sighs, the smoke from Eddie’s cigarette surprising him a little bit. He doesn’t care. Not every night looks like this one.
“I don’t know,” he says. “I said I was afraid people would make fun of me, but I think I was just afraid they’d figure out I wasn’t straight, which … I guess I’m just sorry it held me back.”
Eddie nods.
“It’s why I never told anybody my favorite movie is Singin’ in the Rain,” he says. “Guess the only person I was hurting was me.”
“Wanna know a secret?”
“Sure.”
“That’s the reason I wanted to be a dancer.”
Eddie smiles like he’s been waiting to hear something like that. He reaches his hand out to hold Sam’s but retracts at the last second. Sam takes his hand, anyway. Doesn’t want him to be afraid. Not right here. Not right now. He lets old songs run through his head.
You are my lucky star … I saw you from afar …
“You know, I wasn’t gonna come to this thing tonight,” Eddie says. “My dad’s been pissed at Linda for as long as I can remember. I was gonna stay home outta … I dunno, solidarity, I guess. But when he said he was going, I thought I better come along, too. You know. Outta solidarity again.”
“Yeah,” Sam says. “My twin sister, she’s Daniel’s wife. That’s why I’m here.”
“Well, then, thank God for Daniel and his wife.”
Sam looks at Eddie for a long time, feeling his face turn red like he’s still a kid trying to keep his crushes under lock and key. But this isn’t like being thirteen and falling in love with Will, who couldn’t love him the same way. This is different. This is promise. This is hope. This is a real person, a real man, and he is holding Sam’s hand. They look around the backyard for family members, for neighbors, for squirrels and sparrows. They’re alone. Better that way. More ... once again, the only word Sam has is grand.
When they finally kiss, the night’s never felt younger.

//updated version!!! For anyone!!!//
Their friends in Lunathion were different from Wendlyn, wilder and rambunctious. Fabian stepped away from the party, turning from Bryce dancing.
Adaine turned from the drink she'd been nursing the last hour. She titled her head back, the lights playing on her blue eyes.
She frowned, draining her glass.
"Stop that."
Fabian snorted, leaning against the wall watching her.
"What? Watching you? Self conscious Adaine?"
Adaine rolled her eyes and turned back to the revel. The dreams had started before their first year at University.
They'd talked about it once, at a winter party.
Neither was ready for they commitment, that permeance. Adaine watched Danika laugh at something Baxian said. The way they moved around each other, was it really that easy?
Fabian followed her gaze scoffing as he turned away.
"Not a fan of PDA Fabian?"
"Not a fan of Dani dragging her mate here and ignoring us all."
He winked at her sauntering to where Ruhn stops by the bar. Adaine gripped her glass, turning to throw the cup out.
She was ready, Fabian proved himself to be more than the wild swashbuckling male.
Was she not enough for him? They'd never specified a time frame, or parameters. It had been a quick and awkward -
She jumped beaming as Bryce stumbled into her.
"You okay? Has enough to drink Bryce?"
------
Fabian watched Adaine help Bryce, laughing at something the other girl said. He controlled his breathing, her scent was intoxicating.
She was ready, he could tell by the way she watched him. So why wasn't he? Why was it all still terrifying?
He knew Adaine, his heart would be safe with her.
But would he still be this restless?
He couldn't start something only to hurt her, he'd never forgive himself for it.
Adaine kept her arm around the other, keeping her steady as clearing she was not handling her liquor. Honestly, if it had been the two of them and no one else she probably would have enjoyed teasing him some more.
Yes, she was more than ready and she had given him the signs, she had given him ins. Yet he seemed to refuse, he seemed to be holding back.
“Come Bryce, let’s get you home,” she said softly to the girl before she looked to Fabian. “Help me, we can’t leave her to be taken advantage of by someone.”
