Has anyone else noticed how both the Kingdom of Cameliard and the Lady of the Lake practically have no role or influence in the Fall of Camelot?

*Especially in the earlier French versions - Malory at least mentions Nimue being part of the Arthur rescue crew. This doesn't happen in the original French (Unless its the mysterious woman with Morgan that Griflet doesn't recognize. But Post-Vulgate doesn't mention her, however). But the question is: What was Nimue doing in all that time?

merlin now remembering how he had stumbled into camelot, picked a fight with a pigheaded bully which quickly turned homoerotic and flirtatious, and continued their teasing-flirting for days before merlin shot his shot and asked the prince out only to be rejected: oh yeah, i forgot i did that…..wait, you mean you didnt realize what i was asking?

arthur: no?? we argued everyday, how was i supposed to realize you were asking me out??

merlin now abandoning the dinner and staring across the camp at arthur while the rest of the knights watch their back and forth like a game of tennis: to you we were arguing, to me that was very much flirting. i thought you were flirting back so i decided to ask you. then you rejected me

rewatching an episode of season one of merlin right now, i have a lot of thoughts (arthur legit looks so young it’s messing with my mind realizing how much the characters grow over the seasons and oh my lordy merlin used to be so pure, so trusting, so naive *ugh*) but one thing that just popped into my head: how small Camelot looks.

this is probably due to budget reasons, but the fact that random people can show up and demand an audience with uther or appear mysteriously and meet with a prince, it just makes me wonder what that must have been like for merlin both during his time in camelot and after

we’re talking a kingdom’s whose golden age was in an era of petty states and kings, a few centuries after the fall of the roman empire. merlin fics sometimes bring up how popular merlin is among the people of camelot. it highlights the unspoken notion that camelot and its nobles and royals aree within degrees of separation.

the world, after arthur’s death, must have gotten so frightfully big for merlin. i just think, what if merlin had served arthur or another such king in a later era when the size of the kingdom was so much larger? remove the feudalistic background, if that is what they were going for in the series, and who is merlin? its for that reason that i love the joke that merlin would lowkey be a monarchist because yeah, merlin lived an early era of kings where royals could be in such close proximity and held to the standards of their people.

By this point in time, nearly everyone at Camelot is a geriatric: Arthur is in his 90s, Gawain is 76 years old and his brothers are just somewhere below that. And Lancelot is 55 years old

Meanwhile, Guinevere is still killing it at this age. I wonder if that unnerved some people. The King has grown old enough to sport a long white beard but his wife and Queen is still as fresh as on the day they married...

(For the first question-- I personally don't think personal interpretations are more valid than others or anything, but sometimes I think there could be "extraness" in certain depictions/opinions. I do this too, I bet, so no biggie.)

Donatella Dragna. Now, I prefer Scarlett, and there were certain parts where I didn't agree with or understand Tella at first, but I don't think she never loved her sister. Did she always love her in what we would consider a more mature way, so to speak? Maybe not. But she brought Scarlett to Caraval and even died fir her for a bit because she loved her and wanted them both to escape their abusive father. She wanted to save her from a bad marriage-- remember what she saw in the Aracle! Also, remember how Tella's mom left her. I'm sure that coupled with the abuse traumatized her. It's not Tella's fault either that Garber seems to prefer her and Legend over Scarlett and Julian. It doesn't necessarily make her a bad character. I really enjoyed her pov and how radically different than Scarletf she was. And yes, could she be imperfect? Yes! She was a very human character lmao. So where I think people get it wrong is believing Tella never really loved Scarlett that much which is just false on its face. And by the way with the whole Jacks thing, I don't see why she had to love him at all especially with what he did to her.

Rhian One. Now because of Soman's kinda rushed writing here I can see why people reduce him to sore loser. So not really a reading issue on others' parts. But I don't think he was supposed to be that way and NO Rafal was not supposed to be in the right at the very end. He was still pretty much selfish and insensitive and again, LOVE was abandoned in favor of power. Rafal constantly had this "I wanna forgive Rhian and go back to the way things were" but when has he made an effort let's be fr. Again, not saying Rafal never tried at all or never loved Rhian but it was not consistent. Rhian deals with obvious insecurities and let's face it-- Rafal is always the shining star. People hate him, adore him, admire him and dream about him. He is their god and savior or their demon. Rhian gets treated like a joke the second someone new or stronger is in the picture. And I think that's how siblings often are in real life. Envy and resentment can break up the relationship as they grow older. Rafal never really valued Rhian’s emotions, infantilized him, and acted more like a parent than a brother without him really needing to. So again not saying Rafal deserved being killed but reducing Rhian to "he bad and Rafal is an angel" misses the whole point of their characters and relationships.

(Also minor opinion: I don't think anyone can really claim TLEA Rafal was meant to be original Rafal or not. We don't really know. Idk just something that irks me, especially knowing what Soman has said in the past about naming Rafal after someone he saw for an event or whatever. I personally feel like he had bits and pieces of twin lore in his head and they were "School Masters" and he just pieced it together after he got the prequels idea. But again, I really don't know. So again I don't really care for how people feel so definitively about this when we are not in the man's mind. What bothered me about was just lack of buildup and care to make the plot twists work or the characters shine and feel true tbh rather than TLEA Rafal not being Rafal and this is also a consistent Soman trait)

Celie Tremblay, Scarlett Dragna, and pretty much any soft/traditionally feminine/maternal female characters. Or traumatized women. And oh, Rafal, Jacks, and any morally gray or villainous sexy white angry/violent fictional man. Do I really need to explain myself on this one.

Worst part of canon? Midas dying in Fall and great potential in plot and characters that was not fully met. Esteban Trueba's existence in "The House of the Spirits." Scarlett and Tella's mom dying so quickly. Main series Rafal being the twins' dad and a deadbeat one at that. With Evelyn who for whatever reason decided to birth these children regardless of how he treated her. (Not really their fault though but still. Wasn't Evelyn supposed to be feminist or something.) Cause contraceptive magic or herbs in a fantasy world apparently doesn't exist or maybe they do and an immortal school master lacks brains to make use of them. And knowing this is actually RHIAN ONE makes it better and worse at the same time.

Worst parts of fanon are just basically the weird shipping like incest (saw one with the twins) or very NSFW freaky kinky stuff with characters. Any fan that acts like their word is over anyone else’s or the author's and starts ridiculous fights. And fans who rant without actually reading the story or the racist/misogynistic ones that hate a character and oddly prefer a white character to be with their blorbo. Not saying it's wrong to prefer different ships or characters but hostile energy is there and it's a pattern. OH and white-washed fanart or edits! I HATE that. Did you read the books mf??
