Being inclusive with your reader insert fic is a kindness. It tells people of color (poc) that you are considering someone who does not look like you in your fic. It shows love and dedication to our craft. It tells poc that they belong here too and they can see themselves in your story.
Poc aren’t look for activism in fic, we know fandom isn’t that serious, but we should be able to have that same level of escapism when we turn to fic and fandom. We belong here too. This space is for everyone, not just one group of people.
Just to give a few examples of how simple it can be: say “skin warmed” instead of blushed, say “cradled your head” instead of running fingers through hair, say “angles yourself to kiss” instead of standing on tiptoes, use italics to indicate Spanish to take out a throwaway line of “you didn’t understand Spanish” things like that. Small changes that do not impact the fic at all but make a world of difference in inclusivity!
And for anything you can’t/don’t want to change, simply add warning in the beginning. Things like hair descriptors, anything reader might wear, some backstory for reader (especially involving family or where the story is set), readers job, things like that. A lot of times just having that heads up before the fic makes a world of difference!
And one example of kindness we as writers always worked to change: until recently (just a couple years ago) it wasn’t common to label the gender of the reader. But those who aren’t female asked writers to label it so they know which to read and which to avoid, and now it’s common to label the gender/pronouns of the reader. So it is possible! It just takes effort! And I’m a writer myself so I know it can be done!
We can pretend to be a bartender or a bounty hunter or an actress or anything else. But we shouldn’t have to imagine we’re a white one.

I have a request for batfam/Jason Todd fanfic writers:
I love the "Jason Todd is a bookworm/theatre nerd" fics as much as the next person, don't get me wrong, but can we please diversify his interests?
90% of the time when I open a fic with that tag, we see Jason reading Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice or quoting Shakespeare. And not to say that there's anything wrong with any of those being his favourite but even if he loves to read "classical" books, come on!
You're telling me Jason raised-in-crime-alley-spent-his-formative-years-between-an-eccentric-billionaire-and-an-assassin-cult Todd only reads books by dead white people?!
I refuse! Give me a man who takes to books more than ever after his return to Gotham. Jason, who reads books like I am Woman, A Really Good Brown Girl and White Tears/Brown Scars, then recommends them to the working girls as he establishes his territory. Who reads in multiple languages, and who loves Arabic poetry.
Give me a little "Robin is Magic!" Jason scouring Bruce's library and picking up a copy of The Mahabharata after he's done The Iliad, and spends weeks obsessed with Journey to the West.
Give me a Jason who's read Things Fall Apart, and One Hundred Years of Solitude! The number of quotes and references he could pull that would further support his dramatic tendencies? It would make him so happy!

"aroace people can still have relationships-" NOT ALL OF THEM CAN. YOU KNOW THAT RIGHT. WHY DO YOU WORD IT AS "aroaces can still be in relationships" AND NOT "some can have relationships, and others cannot."? WHY MUST YOU INSIST THAT WE STILL CAN LOVE IN SOME WAY. WHY DOES IT MATTER. WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO LOVE. WHY, WHEN TALKING ABOUT AROACES, DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO IMPLY THAT IT'S OUR OTHER WAYS OF LOVING THAT MAKES US ACCEPTABLE? WHY CAN'T THE FACT WE DON'T LOVE MAKE US GOOD PEOPLE? WHY IS THERE ALWAYS AN EMPHASIS ON THE OTHER WAYS WE LOVE, OR THE AROACES THAT CAN STILL DATE, AND NOT ON OUR LACK OF LOVE? IT FEELS TO ME, LIKE YOU ARE TRYING TO PUSH ASIDE THAT ASPECT OF OUR IDENTITY, BECUASE IT'S TOO STRANGE TO YOU. YOU MAY NOT SAY IT OUTLOUD, BUT THERE'S STILL A STIGMA AROUND LOVELESSNESS. IN YOUR MIND, YOU STILL ARE VIEWING LOVELESS PEOPLE AS LESS MORAL OR GOOD, AREN'T YOU? OTHERWISE, YOU WOULD CELEBRATE OUR LOVELESSNESS, NOT SHOVE IT ASIDE BECUASE "THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO LOVE"

Some fandoms are really weird and anti-oc and it's incredibly obvious! Just a little poke is all. :P I was inspired to put these together after I got rejected by an artist who ships Bagginshield but refused to draw Bofuranna.

i knwo im sleep deprived as hell because i just had a sudden conviction to invent a distinction between smps-in-videos and smps-as-played-by-real-people a la c! and cc! distinction. i think if we are going to keep using c! and cc! we should also do the same to our entire concept of "the server"

I feel really guilty reading fanfics that were made specifically for black readers. Like I'm encroaching on a space that isn't meant for me. I typically try not to read them but I do share them so others who are black can read them. I want to support black content creators without overstaying or pushing my way into a place I'm not invited. Having said that, thank you for all your hard work and well written content.
this made me really sad because what i and other black authors want more than anything is for our work to be read, by everyone. with all due respect, this is absolutely the least way you could be supportive of black writers. how is it supporting us to ignore our work and read the least diverse fanfiction possible? all myself and other black writers have asked for is to be given the same opportunities and care in fandom as our white counterparts—ignoring our work doesn’t help us get seen, doesn’t help us get support, find readers or community, it simply excludes us.
i have not seen a single black author say their work isn’t intended to be read by nonblack people or nonPoC—what i HAVE seen is people asking white authors and community members to be more inclusive in their own work, and to not write characters of color if they are only going to adhere to stereotypes or racist depictions. none of that is a call for our non PoC community members to exclude us and ignore our work. you can’t support us like that.
i appreciate that you love my work “in spite” of it’s inclusiveness to my community, but i really think it would serve you to try and unpack this mindset, friend. ❤️

Not to be horny on main but seeing people writing fanfiction!Aziraphale with insecurities about his weight makes me so sad cause I know it's unfortunately based on reality but then I see Crowley's reaction to Aziraphale's body and I'm like yes gurl you're absolutely right I agree with Crowley's sentiment wholeheartedly, get it.

happy 3 year anniversary to the time i stumbled upon a jjk yuta x reader fic on wattpad and the author's excuse in the note for making the reader white/japanese was because "[....] the story takes place in japan and i want to keep everything accurate to it's ethnicity" i hope you have the worst writer's block ever because whatever in the world do you mean being accurate when you're writing a fic about people fighting cursed
and for other writers out there, regardless of your fandom; just say you don't want to write for poc characters and get it over with. using excuses like "well it's not (historically) accurate to the [era]" or whatever/wherever your fic is being held in is the lamest excuse i can ever hear in all 18 years of my life. you are writing a FANFIC literally NOTHING you write needs to be accurate to ANYTHING. that excuses is literal bullshit and you should kiss my ass if that's your reasoning for being an asshole about including poc characters
edit cause I realize I phrased that first part badly: what I meant was the idea of the Reader having pale asf skin rather than being inclusive for other readers of different skin color. I know Japanese are POC technically but I meant that stereotype of the pale ass skin that author was referring too. Readers are meant to be inclusive of EVERY reader, not one specific audience. I usually try to make sure my readers as neutral as possible with appearances because it's better for the reader to imagine their own appearance rather than describe it and make it a whole ass oc insert.

y'all have got to stop interacting with posts that contain uncredited gifs istg
using my gifs in your post without crediting me gets you blocked without pardon, I am sick of chasing after credit for my work
(also in that same vein: gifmakers can see when you use their gifs with credit because we get a notification if you do, and not every gifmaker wants their gifs included in other people's fics/posts. please try asking us first, esp if you want to use it for explicit content.)

While we’re in Latino Heritage Month, let’s stop assuming your reader doesn’t know/speak Spanish in your reader insert fics. Especially if you’re writing for Pedro’s, Oscar’s or other Latino characters please.
EDIT: After some criticism of how this was originally phrased, let me change it into a question/request instead- Can we as writers please try to be more inclusive with our reader insert fics so poc and others can feel represented and see themselves too? Including taking out a quick throwaway line about reader not understanding Spanish. (Keeping the original phrasing above so anyone who missed the post to begin with can still see how I originally phrased it)
If you have a throwaway line of “he said in Spanish that you didn’t understand” or something similar, just take it out. Have something like “you didn’t hear” instead and let the reader interpret how they want. Or use italics to indicate Spanish. Or have the translation right there without mention of anyone translating for them. Simple. Or if you don’t want to/feel you cannot change it, then please have something in with your warnings so Latinos/poc can skip it if they choose.
And let me tell you why this is so frustrating (even for me as someone who is not a fluent speaker). It’s because Latinos look to these characters and actors for representation. We see ourselves in them. And when you clearly do not have a Latino person in mind when writing, you’re saying we don’t belong here. In a space where we should feel welcomed and celebrated. Representation matters. Inclusivity matters. Please try to be more inclusive with reader fics so we can all enjoy and immerse ourselves in your writing.
ALSO EDITING TO ADD MORE FROM A REBLOG SO EVERYONE CAN SEE MY CLARIFICATION: (under a cut for length)
This is nothing new, poc have been asking for years now to be inclusive in fics and yet it’s still a battle. We’re not asking for a lot, and certainly not asking anyone to change their style or creativity or anything like that. Literally simple edits: take out the word “blush” don’t mention hair, don’t mention not understanding Spanish, not making reader blood related to a white character, etc. Literally tiny things that would not change the story at all but make a world of difference.
Here’s an example too: a few years ago it was not common for writers to label the gender of their reader as it was usually assumed the reader would be a woman. But, people advocated to label readers as f/m/gn/whatever to be more inclusive and asked writers to strive for gender neutral readers when possible so that more readers felt seen and welcome. Now it’s a common thing to do. Why is making the readers race ambiguous any different?
Yes sometimes posts like this come across harsh, but know that they’re not meant to be. Poc aren’t trying to demand anything, we just ask to broaden your langauge when writing reader insert so more can see themselves in your work. It’s incredibly frustrating to ask for inclusivity and be met with hostility and rudeness in return and a refusal to think about poc so yes sometimes the wording gets harsh out of that frustration. But I encourage y’all to focus on the message more and maybe think about why poc in fandom get snippy like this. We do need to have an open conversation, yes. Just look in the comments at the Latinos and poc who are upset by the exclusion and feel hurt by it. How you you white fans feel if roles were reversed and none of the fics included you? Not fun, right?
And to those who say write it yourself: I do. I’ve been a x reader writer for years now and I do strive for inclusivity in my work. But I’m only one person and this is bigger than any one person. This isn’t about what I personally find acceptable or what I personally what. It should be a collective effort among writers as a whole to strive to include as many as possible in their works and not white code your readers. It’s not about demanding writers write it a certain way, it’s about asking writers to consider others who don’t look like them who also want the immersion and the escape that your fic brings.

The first story from the Bodies Series will be dropping tomorrow!
I'm so excited to release it, and the other stories after that, which will follow weekly until the series is complete.
But I also want to take a moment to offer my sincere thanks...
This series has been inspired by real bodies, and real love.
I've had numerous discussions with people who have, and live with, some of the conditions/disabilties listed on the Masterlist.
It's my hope that these stories can offer enjoyment, comfort, and sexy times, because let's face it, intimacy and love is something we all want and are deserving of, no matter what body we have.
I would just like to extend my thanks to eveyone who has taken time to share their stories and experiences with me, which has in turn added to the depth of these stories and helped shaped my writing.
Thank you! 🥰
Whilst this is just fan fiction, I wanted to offer representation in this community and to show that a story, although mere words on a page to some, can mean more to others in feeling included.
I've undertaken extensive research, in the form of talking to others, conducted thorough research online, and drawn on my own personal experiences too, to ensure this series is as respectful as can be, and mindful of unconsious bias.
However, these stories are not verbatim and are not written as 'one size fits all' and do rely, as any other story does, on imagination and fantasy too.
☝🏻I have not shied away from my own style of writing or the smut. The smut is smuttin' in Jett's usual style, guys... 😉
Whilst the stories may not represent your own personal journey or experience - and everyone's journey and experience will be different - it's my hope that it resonates and can offer enjoyment.
Once again, thank you so much to everyone who has spoken with me, and to everyone who has shared excitement, love and positivity around this series.
Love you!🖤

someday I will write about the karenification of fandom where white middle aged women who feel as if they have little to no power in their actual lives end up projecting their fantasies onto white men while also specifically excluding if not outright demonizing any and all women and POC and if anyone dares to speak up about it, immediately devolve into the online equivalent of calling the cops by crying to their followers and lashing out because this is their “safe space” and they’re “queer and marginalized” while simultaneously writing women and POC worse than any cis straight white man ever could.
Not today.
But someday.
