#fatphobia in fandom
Text
And while I'm talking about fatphobia in Fandoms, please tell me you noticed how obsessed the marauders Fandom is with characters being overly thin. Like, they'll hold up how they made Lilly fat occasionally, and sometimes even say they don't like thin Peter fan casts, then it's off to the races to make all the boys we love as thin as possible and say that it's just part of their character. Of course all of these teenage boys are as thin as humanly possible. Of course Sirius is thin as hell. Of course Remus is too. And so is regulus. And Barty. I even saw James being described as skinny. He's a teenage athlete, and you're describing him as skinny? How does he sustain all that mascle mass exactly? He should have Nick Nelson's build. And the rationalizations of it doesn't make it any better. Oh, it's just because Remus is sick so often. It's just because Regulus / Sirius have an eating disorder, or because they were starved by their mom. That's why all the fan art has them in so little clothes that show specifically their tiny waist and their thin bodies in general. I've only rarely seen the same in fan art of Lilly, and basically never with Peter. Because he's not who people are attracted to, they say. Well, first of all, why do you think that is? And Secondly, we don't have that much information about the rest of them being as skinny as they're depicted, aspacially not as teens, so that still doesn't explain why we're making them look basically heroine chic. As if half the Fandom isn't trans masc people who want to be like these characters, who are some of the only positive depictions of masculinity and masculine friendship out there. And as if the trans community isn't dealing with so much internelised fatphobia and Straightforward phatphobia towards others, too. As if the skinny white trans masc isn't a huge problem in diversifying our social idea of what a transmasculine body looks like. Maybe if we see these characters that people headcanon as trans so often not be fetishized for being super skinny it'll be a little easier to feel like we don't have to be that in order to be valid and loved. Nobody does. So, start making Sirius chubby. And Remus. And Regulus. And not just for the sake of giving them body issues. Also because they're people. I want a Remus that has a stomach. I want James with chubby arms. I want Regulus and Sirius that isn't the most extreme version of a twink you can think of. Or just have them look like they're in a healthy waight. We don't have to romanticize being skinny. We can romanticize being a human that grows and changes and struggles and thrives. That's what we're good at, as a Fandom. That and angst.

I don’t really go here, but I was randomly scrolling through the bowuigi tag today and I would like to wish every artist that draws Bowser (both original form and any version of humanised) as skinny a very Die In A Fire

Personally something I hate is when x reader fanfics include pictures, like pictures of the outfit you're suppedly wearing or gifs of kissing or nsfw stuff, and no it's probably not because of what you're thinking
I know they're only suggestions or aesthetics, but for me, it feels like the writer already assumes the reader is skinny because these pics and gifs never include a fat person (Or a poc for that matter)
I'm not telling anyone what they can and can't do, I'm just stating a pet peeve of mine that causes me to not read particular fics before I even begin reading them.
(And don't even get me started on, "he put his hands on your dainty/petite/smaller frame", "he picked you up with ease", etc. I know and acknowledge that not everything is made for me, I get it!! But it really just proves to me that you're assuming the reader is skinny and short which is frustrating and annoying as hell)

I wish people would stop fucking writing Aziraphale as self-conscious of his body. He can CHOOSE WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE. He looks like that BECAUSE HE WANTS TO
Oh sorry I forgot, he's chubby so he must hate his body 🙄

I'm not one to make unwanted comments on people's art or send them stupid asks about this shit but sometimes I really do see some amazing art in whatever technical sense and I'm like "Wow I'd love to engage with this if you actually drew the fat character fat"

YIKES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine reposting someone’s fanfic, and acting so insanely gross when the author KINDLY asks you to take it down, or at least credit them. (I can’t reblog the og post because I was blocked ages ago by the op)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine then having a toddler tantrum because the author, who was rudely rejected and insulted, shared the post and advised people they were the author as seen in the first set of images.
Imagine being such a GROSS bully because YOU were wrong.
(With permission from Conkers to use the screenshots she’s sent me from her inbox, I’m attaching some of the cruel backlash she’s received from this person, tagging triggers just in case - TW: transphobic, fatphobic)

Please treat people with kindness. I don’t care if you create something or not, if this type of behavior is allowed in ANY space…wow.
DO BETTER.

Yeah, no best believe if Falin were actually fat in canon the Falin/Marcille ship would not actually have taken off.
(And I say this as a fat person who's been observing fatphobia in general fandom spaces for a while and has been watching the general fatphobia in the Dungeon Meshi fandom that the Dunmeshi fandom pretends doesn't exist, gaslight fat fans who talk about it, and straight up lie to people with reservations about the series in regards to its fatphobia in the text. Like, I've got a pretty good working knowledge of how fandom folks treat canonically fat characters vs the characters that fandom likes to fatten up but are not fat in canon.)
Canon Falin is just the right size to get the curvy lady/thicc treatment where folks who are kinda ok with somewhat plus-sized folks will work with her, folks who genuinely like fat chicks and are desperate for representation will work with her, and folks that want to look/come off as progressive will work with her.
if Falin were fat fat her friendship with Marcille would be seen as just a friendship and Marcille's most popular ship would probably be with one of the Canaries.

“we need more m/f friendships in media that stay platonic due to heteronormativity that’s rooted in homophobia/aphobia plus women and men can actually be good friends without romance” and “having m/f romances aren’t inherently bad especially if the people involved are fat, disabled, neurodivergent, and/or people of color because queer people aren’t the only marginalized group that need to be represented” are two statements that can and should coexist.

I mean, if you showed up in my inbox using that kind of language towards Viv I would delete it on the spot -- and have -- but I guess if you want to call her ugly shit, Viv stans, that's your right. It's a free internet.

Saw a recent post on Tiktok about how people complaining at Viv not having fat rep shouldn't be saying anything when they don't like Mimzy as if that excuses the zero diversity before and after her in both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. That statement combined with someone making a fat joke about Moxie in the comments (with a startling high number of likes) shows me how little Viv's watchers like or even care about fat people and their voice when it comes to rep.
I know I've mentioned it a few times in talking about Mammon and The musical episode as a whole, but fatphobia is a problem in Viv's work in very blatant ways, ways that are not new by a long shot. Fat people have been constantly talking about this for years, about wanting to be shown as people and have their bodies shown in a way that doesn't reduce them to the butt of the joke or only paint them in the "sexy fat" since that's obviously the one way people could think a fat person was attractive. However, people, especially in this fandom, look at that ask for respect and see as nothing more than gum on the bottom of their shoe.
It's not only heartbreaking but morally bunk, and I honestly can't tell if it comes from their ignorance or this unbeatable need to defend Viv from ever possible critique (even if said critique would actively benefit her). But it doesn't honestly matter.
Fat people wanting more rep then one person per show (especially when that one person is a walking example of stereotypical bad fat rep) and for a creator to not include fat bodies as a joke is not a big ask. It's the bare minimum and the fact that people are clamoring to try and excuse Viv's fatphobia by blaming the audience says that everyone making this claim does not care about the voices of fat people nor actually respecting their opinions on the subject.
When fat people are asking for their body types to be treated seriously and to not be minimized to fat stereotypes or insulting jokes, the response isn't to shame them for daring to have that opinion nor is it to make a joke that a character commonly insulted with fat jokes is actually fat rep.
If you want to lick Viv's boots, that's your right but stop putting down fat people who are just asking to be respected in media to prove that loyalty.

"I just don't know how to draw fat women!" Yeah, we can tell.
"I just don't know how to write fat women!" Yeah, we can tell.
"I just don't know how to depict fat women without using offensive, inaccurate stereotypes!"
Yeah, we can tell.

"I have to bite my tongue when people criticize snw's Kirk because he is skinny when tos' Kirk wasn't but then in the same breath they'd laugh at snw's actor who plays kirk because he's "old" when he should be younger than shatner's Kirk (even when Wesley doesn't look old at all; even if he did so what he's doing a great job) I feel insane like good for you you're not fatphobic you're just spewing ageism all over your blog
I'm sorry this is really negative but please for the love of god stop talking about Wesley's age thanks"

The fatphobic jokes against Rhaenyra are so tiring to see over and over again.
You never see this type of “content” about Viserys even though his book counter part was also described as fat.
It’s not even bottom of the barrel, it’s scrapping through the barrel to claw at the floor.
