Is that space feudalism post about smth specific? U got book recs?

in the strictest sense, it's because i'm reading Poul Anderson's Mirkheim, which isn't very good - it's forgettable but enjoyable midcentury sci-fi. it's more that I'm really happy to see the concept. 

unfortunately, my favorite examples are all things I wouldn't recommend to people because I have a high tolerance for sexism but wouldn't expose others to it without a lot of warning, but if you have similar tolerance, I really like Robert Silverberg's Majipoor novels, or Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun.

what do you read?

All kinds of stuff, dude. Novels, comic books, street signs, the backs of cereal boxes. Was reading through the first few runs of Hellboy recently, as I’d only read the odd issue way back when, and a Roger the Homunculus one-shot at some random interval. Then read a collected edition of Iron Man Armor Wars, and afterward Grant Morrison’s run of Doom Patrol. I’m into the comic series called The Fade Out by Ed Brubaker at the moment, since Kill Or Be Killed rocked my fucking world, but I just got started so that jury’s still hanging high.Also, on the non-illustrated side of literature, a funny little sci-fi book called Mecha Corps by some guy named Brett Patton, Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson which is a medieval time-travel high adventure romantic hero book, another sci-fi book The Fifth Head of Cerberus by the ever eminent Gene Wolfe, and a Bantam collection of Dostoyevsky’s short stories just because I needed a little abject misery to balance out all the fun I was having with everything else.

Le héros de Neal Adams est aussi souple et délié que le Tarzan de Manning, aussi structuré et consistant que le Tarzan de Hogarth. Les visages, eux, souvent en gros plan, ont la même fidélité (approfondie) au réel — tout comme la texture des vêtements ou des chevelures. Et la lumière, elle, est quasi photographique. Par un modelé au trait complexe et élégant, où les hachures se croisent et se recroisent et s’entrecroisent — et que des encreurs comme Dick Giordano ou Tom Palmer ont su respecter avec finesse —, quatre, cinq, voire six valeurs de lumière et d’ombre son appliquées. Sur ce point la photo en général ne fait pas plus. Mais pour Adams, ce changement, aussi radical soit-il, ne suffit pas.

Plus réel que moi, tu vis !

Des cases rectangulaires ? Allons donc ! Très peu pour Neal. Comment faire entrer toute l’énergie cinétique du monde dans des rectangles ? Parce que le monde bouge. Parce que tout, dans le réel, se déplace. Lentement, parfois, ou à fond bien souvent. Neal Adams va casser ces rectangles canoniques. Triangles rectangles et autres altérations du cadre vont tracer dans ses planches des diagonales. Et les diagonales, ça va vite ! Ces diagonales qui étaient jusqu’alors confinées dans le cadre — par les perspectives, les visées obliques, les contre-plongées —, contaminent le contour des vignettes. C’est un peu comme si l’artiste secouait sa planche. Et quand on secoue il arrive ce qui devait arriver : les personnages, déjà « filmés » au plus près, sont éjectés hors du cadre de leur univers. Ils dépassent. Ils s’échappent. Et ils se retrouvent comme dans un entre-deux virtuel qui séparerait l’espace fictionnel du narrateur de l’espace réel du lecteur. Ce personnage qui s’émancipe de son support devient à ce point fondamental dans la manière de Neal, que le dessinateur parvient à rendre cette impression sans même que le héros ne sorte du cadre. Dans une planche célèbre où on voit chuter Le Fauve du haut d’un immeuble, Le X-Man semble sortir de la dernière vignette sans pour autant dépasser des bords de la case. Comment est-ce possible ? Très subtilement, Neal Adams met la série de cases verticales en perspectives, comme s’il s’agissait de l’immeuble lui-même. Et Le Fauve se trouve alors entre la page et nous. D’ailleurs, si le Superman de Neal a pu croiser les gants et serrer la main de Muhammad Ali (projet dans lequel Adams s’est beaucoup investi), c’est bien qu’il existe(rait) dans la vraie vie, ce Superman, n’est-ce pas ? Très bien. Le héros de Neal Adams se veut un être du réel. Capable de sortir des cases pour se poser sur la planche de l’artiste. Et sur la page du lecteur. Mais pour nous dire quoi ?

Sortie hors du corp(u)s

Que fait un artiste lorsqu’il produit une image ? Que fait-il quand, mobilisant l’expérience intuitive et conceptuelle de son monde intérieur, il imagine une forme ? Quand, recrutant tout son savoir-faire acquis par des heures et des heures de gestes répétés, il couche cette forme sur un support ? C’est une partie de son esprit qui invente ; et dans l’œuvre achevée, qu’il en soit conscient ou pas, que ce soit volontaire ou non, c’est une partie de son corps (de sa gestuelle) qui se grave dans l’image — et qu’on reconnaît dans sa griffe unique. L’image produite par l’artiste, c’est l’artiste sorti de lui-même. L’œuvre de l’artiste c’est l’image de lui-même « hors de lui », et qui s’offre pour toujours à la vue de tous et dans le réel. C’est la partie (l’essence ?) de lui-même qui s’immortalise dans le monde. Le héros adams-ien, réaliste au possible et qui fuit la planche/fiction pour exister sur la page/réalité, est le symbole de cette dynamique. Il délivre un secret. Il nous dit que tout artiste est immortel. Non pas par la seule postérité comme on le conçoit habituellement, mais bien parce que l’image produite est l’artiste lui-même « hors » de lui, et « dans » le monde. Ce qu’il nous dit, au fond, ce personnage qui nous saute dans les mains alors même que nous tenons le comic book — et à l’heure où un célèbre moteur de recherche investit des sommes astronomiques dans la recherche sur l’immortalité —, c’est qu’immortels nous le sommes tous. Car tous nous produisons des images de nous (et offertes au monde), ne serait-ce que par la façon de nous vêtir, de nous maquiller, de nous tatouer : de nous photographier.
