I hope people in the OSC (and other fandoms in general) who are ok with or neutral about Kosa realize that not only will we lose a bunch of platforms that allow us to interact with each other (Tumblr, discord, Ao3, Wattpad, Twitter, YouTube, etc) but will also get rid of at least 80-95% of our fandom.

The OSC consists mostly of people between 13-17 who (if Kosa goes through the Senate and Houses of Representatives and gets passed as a law) will most likely no longer have access to YouTube and other social platforms which actively kills almost all the people who read and watch Object Shows!

By visiting and sharing animated shows like II or BFDI those creators make money which gives them the means to keep making their shows and paying their animators, voice actors, writers and so much more. This bill will actively get rid of most of the people who watch these shows which will cause a large loss in support and revenue for these creators and will most likely mean the end for any smaller object show.

Object show comics rely on people sharing them around in fandom spaces since they’re not animated and put on YouTube like animated object shows are. By losing these spaces and the people who support their content these creators will no longer be able to reach a large audience and get the support they need to continue their comics. This means that we will lose a lot of the comics that the OSC has!

Most of the content you see in the OSC is made by minors, which this bill will actively destroy and thus kill this fandom and many others!

So I am begging of you OSC and other communities, Please please please sign petitions, tell your senators and representatives that you don’t want this bill to pass, and tell anyone that you can reach about how this Bill is a violation of privacy and minors' rights! Re-blog anything you see with helpful information about what Kosa is and keep talking about it! We need to tell people about it so that this doesn’t go through the Senate. Remember, the final day is February 26, we don’t have that long!!!

History is made: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala chosen as Director-General

WTO members made history today (15 February) when the General Council agreed by consensus to select Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria as the organization’s seventh Director-General.

When she takes office on 1 March, Dr Okonjo-Iweala will become the first woman and the first African to be chosen as Director-General. Her term, renewable, will expire on 31 August 2025.

“This is a very significant moment for the WTO. On behalf of the General Council, I extend our warmest congratulations to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment as the WTO's next Director-General and formally welcome her to this General Council meeting,” said General Council Chair David Walker of New Zealand who, together with co-facilitators Amb. Dacio Castillo (Honduras) and Amb. Harald Aspelund (Iceland) led the nine-month DG selection process.

“Dr Ngozi, on behalf of all members I wish to sincerely thank you for your graciousness in these exceptional months, and for your patience. We look forward to collaborating closely with you, Dr Ngozi, and I am certain that all members will work with you constructively during your tenure as Director-General to shape the future of this organization,” he added.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala said a key priority for her would be to work with members to quickly address the economic and health consequences brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am honoured to have been selected by WTO members as WTO Director-General,” said Dr Okonjo-Iweala. “A strong WTO is vital if we are to recover fully and rapidly from the devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. I look forward to working with members to shape and implement the policy responses we need to get the global economy going again. The General Council agreed on 31 July that there would be three stages of consultations held over a two-month period commencing 7 September. During these confidential consultations, the field of candidates was narrowed from eight to five and then two. On 28 October, General Council Chair David Walker of New Zealand had informed members that based on consultations with all delegations Dr Okonjo-Iweala was best poised to attain consensus of the 164 WTO members and that she had the deepest and the broadest support among the membership. At that meeting, the United States was the only WTO member which said it could not join the consensus.

The consultation process undertaken by the chair and facilitators was established through guidelines agreed by all WTO members in a 2002 General Council decision. These guidelines spelled out the key criteria in determining the candidate best positioned to gain consensus is the “breadth of support” each candidate receives from the members. During the DG selection processes of 2005 and 2013, breadth of support was defined as “the distribution of preferences across geographic regions and among the categories of members generally recognized in WTO provisions: that is (Least developed countries), developing countries and developed countries”. This same process, agreed by all members in the General Council in 2020, was strictly followed by Chair Walker and his colleagues throughout the 2020-21 DG selection process.

The process for selecting a new Director-General was triggered on 14 May when former Director-General Mr Roberto Azevêdo informed WTO members he would be stepping down from his post one year before the expiry of his mandate. He subsequently left office on 31 August.

She’s already been in the negatives for 2 or 3 days because she tried to “fix it herself” without telling me (I only found out because I happened to see her bank app).

Her car’s engine also stopped and we can’t afford a rental so I have to drive her to and from work myself (a 40 minute drive each way, I will be making the 80 minute drive twice today so I can go to my own job). I don’t get paid until Thursday and the only thing I can afford rn is gas.

I just had to pay $500 to get my own car out of the shop after almost 2 months since someone tried to steal it in September (all the parts they needed were on back order) and the dude who tried to take it for a joy ride gets to pay it back in small increments (when a white boy does it for fun, they give him every excuse) which means I’m out $500.

I wanted to attend my community college this upcoming semester but I’m just going to have to skip again if this keeps up, which I really don’t want to do because of pressure from my sister to get a degree or apprenticeship. She won’t help my mom in order to “punish her” but it really just punishes me. My mom has been hiding her finances from me ever since my dad died, resulting in things like my car (the car is under her name & insurance but my dad gave it to me) getting repossessed during the summer (we were able to get it back luckily) and the internet getting shut off. She lied about where the money I paid her was going, paid for her own car + insurance instead and let my car get repossessed. My finances and well-being are entirely dependent on her bank account, and she is consistently dishonest about where our money goes, and then funnels any money I make into her account. She also tries to buy frivolous things we don’t need when she runs out of money + tries to force me to buy those things for her and is only frugal when spending her own paycheck. Everyone I have explained the situation to tells me that I am being financially abused, and I cannot find a way out of it besides moving out, but I can’t afford to do that and I can’t leave my pets behind.

I was also trying to pay off my phone and late bills to T-Mobile so we could switch over to a cheaper company but I can’t make any progress on this because we can’t afford to pay anything off before the next month rolls over and we get charged yet again (when T-Mobile bought Sprint they started charging us out the ass). The electric bill is also going to be unsustainable this winter, our heater doesn’t work half the time so we have space heaters but that’s it for us + our 4 cats + 1 dog.

I’m also supposed to be going to the doctor’s to get a diagnosis (probably EDS), physical and mental therapy, etc. but I have to go through multiple doctors and institutions(?) to do this, which is pretty much impossible when you’re sharing 1 car between 2 people and are the only one with any gas money (which is gonna go FAST). I also do not want my mom to know under any circumstances if I attend mental therapy.

Solarpunk Aesthetic Week: Worldbuilding Thoughts Part Two, Electric Boogaloo

(Worldbuilding is my strong suit, I will definitely have a lot of these!)

In a solarpunk future, people should be able to rely less on money to get what they need! But if currency remains a thing then my leftist dad told me about a concept called global minimum wage (I think) where everyone gets an unconditional steady income, of say.. 20$ an hour per 12 hours of the day becoming 240$ per day. If we're not doing much with money, can't hurt to give lots of it to everyone, yeah?

Besides that, I was thinking about carbon-neutral skyscrapers. Our current method of steel and fiberglass is woefully inefficient in that regard, but in terms of space, building upwards is incredibly efficient. Ideally we would strike a balance with carbon-neutral, long-lasting materials that are good and sturdy!

Oh, and clear solar panels to be put in windows? Imagine stained glass religious reliefs generating power, whole 'glass' buildings becoming beacons of energetic output, self-sufficient houses full of light..

Languages! Languages in the air, signs in so many different alphabets, songs and laughter and family said in so many words but still understood and respected.

Sign language would be commonplace! Mischievous students signing to each other after their mentor told them to hush, parents signing over their sleeping baby, divers speaking merrily to each other while tens of feet down in the deep and expressing their awe for nature. Hearing-impaired folk would be able to move through society with ease and understanding.

BRAILLE LABELS. On stuff in stores, on signs, textured curbs to catch a cane.. but really on stuff especially. You know how hard it is to shop while blind? Everything is identical. It's awful.

Community decisions are decided by council, and anyone who wishes to join the council meetings can. Even children! Especially children. Their voices are heard and respected, because they live in our communities too.

If someone is truly acting harmful and cruel to others, and does hurt people, at majority community vote they are removed from greater society and put in a rehabilitation commune with therapists and social workers to assist them on the right path. With love, not hate and mistreatment.

Has anyone heard of dementia villages? A whole village for those elderly suffering with dementia, constructed for the purpose of their autonomy. Communes would not necessarily become as such and they may not be as necessary- for we all would love and care for each other, especially those infirm- but settlements would be constructed in a similar fashion for ease of navigation, with lots of signage to help point people where, and perhaps dedicated guides if necessary.

In Defense of Our Alliance

My dear friends, there's trouble on the timeline today and it hurts my heart. I'd like to make a case for peace, if I may...

Every group of friends and all communities need every so often to hash out differences in points of view, personalities, and policies--but I suspect there's a bit more to it than that, this time.

We are beset on all sides with enemies we cannot fight.

Billboard keeps deleting sales without explanation, deaf to our requests or complaints. They absolutely have a double standard for the artists who pay radio to play. We cannot be sure any of our new buying methods will work, and in this economy, nobody has money to burn without a care.

YouTube keeps deleting views, again without explanation, despite folks streaming under premium accounts and following best practices. Watching those counts go down by the hundreds of thousands every hour is maddening, especially when it doesn't happen to artists who pay for ads.

Spotify froze and split title tracks. Hanteo deleted sales data the second records broke. The company went completely silent--neither celebrating Jimin's Hot100 #1 nor publicly acknowledging his being unfairly pushed down the chart--again, without explanation or recourse. Even some members were silent about his achievement.

Meanwhile, the LA Times is writing love letters to other groups trying to use our group for validation, which is just baffling.

This is to say nothing of the cult, the haters, the shooters from other fandoms, dragging our friends and our members through the mud, nonstop, all day every day, with a particular viciousness I'd normally associate only with actual diagnosed psychopaths.

And we knew there would be challenges, maybe even a contrived scandal or two, around Jimin's release. But I don't think anyone could predict this level of a shit show.

Everyone is exhausted; everyone is on edge.

What was supposed to be a fun and safe space has become a battleground.

And most of us are so ready to defend Jimin and the other members, yet we have zero hope of a fair fight.

It is no surprise to me that, with all that fatigue and pent-up anger, we are starting to fight amongst each other.

I must acknowledge that there are a fair few things we need to hash out as a fandom--the ability to call a spade a spade and not be labeled an anti; the ability to block or take time away and not be called a coward; the ability to criticize but not give in to hate or cult-like narratives; the ability to speak our minds without spewing negativity. There's a lot that needs to be addressed, and it's for heads clearer and smarter than me to untangle it all.

But I will say this:

Jimin has only us. That much is very clear.

So I put it to you now:

We NEED our archivists, who help capture and catalogue the important milestones and the little moments that illustrate why our fandom believes what it does.

We NEED our tutors, who help us make the most of our streams and purchases and votes so we are not wasting time and money and effort.

We NEED our cheerleaders, who help reset our attitudes into more positive, gentler, kinder, more honorable kinds of fans.

And we NEED our discourse blogs, the ones who can entertain multiple points of view without bashing or adopting any particular stance.

Most of all, right now, we need to unite. Because Jimin has very few other folks in his corner. Hobi goes in today. And while his other members love him, I strongly suspect he will feel the absence of Hobi's unfailing support, his clear demonstration of affection, and his wise counsel.

Now more than ever, we must come together. And to do that, we each much decide:

Why are we here?

If you're here to experience pleasure over a ship or a rush of adrenaline over drama and tea, if you just want to look at pretty pics and fics and not really get involved--okay. You are a casual fan. Nothing wrong with that. All I ask is that you do no harm while in this space. Don't fuel the flames of any feud, please.

But if you're here for Jimin, for BTS, for Jikook... then the goal has to be to support Jimin and BTS and Jikook first and foremost, yes? Even though it would feel great to pop off on someone you don't like or agree with (and I'm in Super Menopause thanks to medication so I absolutely sympathize with folks who do pop off--god knows, I have), please try to ask yourself:

Does it serve our common purpose?

Does it help?

Is it kind?

Would Jimin and Jikook feel honored by it?

Would BTS be proud of us?

And if the answer is no, then: forgive yourself for being human. We are none of us perfect.

But maybe take some time away to reset and recharge.

Real life is stressful; fandom life is stressful. Try to get some deep sleep. Let yourself enjoy a nutritious, hearty meal. Watch a comedy show that makes you belly laugh. Look at something so beautiful it makes you tear up. Listen to uplifting music. Pet an animal. Take a walk. Enjoy a luxurious bubble bath. However you restore yourself to your BEST self, you deserve that.

And then? Bring your best self back to this fandom. Because otherwise, we abandon it to the loudest assholes out there.

In the end, I believe we all want to support our boys and to make the best judgements on how to be a good fan. We may disagree on how to do that. But that's no reason to insult our allies or harshly judge the way they conduct themselves.

Shame is not a teaching tool.

Let's lead by example.

I'm a small blog. I'm nobody important. If you've read this far, I'm already surprised. But if you're still with me--please take this much to heart: I sincerely want us to get back to being the loving, intelligent, hard-working, focused fandom we've always been.

We are just regular people. We are going to have bad takes, and bad days, and bad attitudes. But let's give each other a little grace.

And if someone truly has bad intentions, and wants to ruin things, then let us calmly, quietly walk away from them. No need to give our precious time and attention to anything toxic. Toxic people feed off it and only get stronger, anyway.

Our time and energy is best spent on what brought us all here in the first place: BTS.

These are my thoughts, and I mean to say them sincerely and gently.

If this post rubbed you the wrong way, my DMs are open and I'm willing to listen to your thoughts. (Because DMs are always the best place to question someone or discuss something sensitive, I think.) But it's very unlikely that you'll change my mind about the need for us to work together and treat each other compassionately, so, you might wish to just quietly block and be on your way instead.

In any case, I just wanna say... I see you guys, out there. I see you trying hard. I see you contemplating the best way to make use of your time and resources. I see your bubbly enthusiasm and your devastating frustration. I see you, and I think each of you are very human, in the best sense of the word. Despite all the heart aches and hardships, I'm still proud to count myself among you.

It's not much, but I'm sending you guys my love and support. <3

I fantasize every single day about having my own house, decorated in a bright flourish of colors and filled with fun silly knickknacks and the comfiest furniture. I'll have a dishwasher and a washer/dryer set, and enough windows to let the light in. I'll have ac and heat, and a fan just in case. The lamps will have fun shapes, like flower bulbs, and there will be a clock that makes noises every hour like the one in my parents house.

My bed will be a queen size, and it's gonna have fun sheets and covers and maybe even something crocheted for the top (I would have the money to buy someone's work, to pay them what they deserve.) I'll put up glow in the dark stars on the ceiling, and do wallpaper on some walls and paint on others. No carpets, but a couple of rugs and mats with pretty patterns.

One of the rooms will be a small library, only half- filled because I have so much more I want to read. It'll also have a work desk maybe for my computer and a sketchbook, and there's plushies peeking out off some of the shelves.

There's gonna be a basement, and that's where all my art stuff will be. An art studio, but it's not fancy, and it's going to be messy as all hell, but I'll get to work with clay on the wheel again, paint things on a big canvas, or just draw. Maybe accidentally drink paint out of my mug. There'll be a fan in the basement window to keep the air down there from becoming too bad.

I'll have one dog and one cat. The dog will get training and get to go to a groomers and he'll protect the house but also get so many kisses and snuggles, and when I walk in to get a cat I'll ask who's been there the longest and who needs the most help, maybe an elderly cat, and I'll love it forever. It'll have toys and a cat tree and two litter boxes. I'll make time to walk the dog every week, and we can go to a dog park for many zoomies.

I want a guest bedroom that's clean and always ready to go, so my friends will always have a safe place to be if they need it. They can come over for fun times and we can make food together, and some of them will get antsy and ask to do dishes with me cause they want to help, so I'll rinse off the dishes and they can put them in the washer, or vice versa. They'll never have to, because they're my favorite guests in the whole world, but I'd never let them stew in anxiety over a couple of plates.

I don't have a green grass lawn. I hate mowing. There's gonna be flowers everywhere instead, and I'll have a bunch of written notes about where the sunlight goes and how much shading there is so I can make sure each plant gets the proper amount of light. I'll have a list in my big binder, all the flower names and where they are and what they need. I know it'll take me years to get everything set up and grown, but it'll be a really big reward to have butterflies and birds. There will be a big multi-feeder like my grandma has, and a squirrel feeder opposite side of it to keep them separated. I want a gooseberry bush so I can make a pie. I'll have a composter. I'll have overwhelming amounts of zucchini and sheepishly offer them to my neighbors every year. I want to be friends with all my neighbors.

I'll know all the people in the neighborhood and their kids, I'll say hi and give them food and be a part of the community. When the kids go out and play on our street like I did as a kid, they'll be safer cause I'll be an adult worth trusting. My dog will always be happy to see them and I'll never be mean and yell at the kids when they get too rowdy. If a neighbor wants to be left alone I'll leave them be, but I'll make sure they know I'm here if there's ever an emergency or they need a working phone, like our old neighbors did for us.

I'll have a ramp and no steps to get into my house, because I want my friends on wheels to be able to easily get inside my house. If I gotta have stairs inside my house, I want to someday afford one of those wheelchair lifts so they're not stuck to one floor. The floor space will be clean and open enough for the chair to zoom everywhere. I'll have a shower that's handicap accessible like the one in my family home now, along with a huge bathtub. I'll make my home accommodating in all the ways they suggest so I can have my friends be safe and comfortable when they're with me.

I could have a pond out in the back, like my grandparents did. Get toads every summer, get some fun plants to make it a diverse ecosystem. It would be lined with big rocks and the birds would like it, even if the water isn't clear. Could also get a bird bath. I'd take my grandmother's books about identifying birds with me, so I can learn about which ones are coming to my garden. I'd learn about all the different insects scuttling through the dirt.

There'd be two medical kits, one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen. Everything would be organized so I don't have to go rummaging through drawers at 3 am for a bandaid.

It wouldn't always be the cleanest place, because I know myself, but once a month I could hire a cleaning service and pay them to help me. It might be a little awkward at first, but I'll be very nice to them and check to see if I can leave a tip for the hard work, and maybe offer them zucchini bread.

I don't watch TV, but I'd probably have a small one in the living room that has a DVD player, perched in one of those wood shelves that have cupboards filled to brim with movies and shows and even music I like. I'd have them on in the background while I do things, cause I need the audio. I won't have to pay for streaming sites because every show I love I can hold in my hands.

I can never bring myself to hang my clothes up in a closet, so I'll have a couple baskets of clean clothes I can look through. I'll learn how to iron. I'll be able to pay to have my clothes tailored to fit me. The closet will have Legos in it instead, or some very soft nerf guns, or board games I know I love. I'll make messes I won't clean up for a week, but I'll be able to build a Lego city with my friends when they come over or build marble towers.

I'll host tea parties where we can have fun and dress up in pretty clothes, and costume parties where my friends can come and show off their cosplays. There'll be good food, maybe potlucks. I'll learn how to be a good host and maybe my friends will make friends with each other sometimes. Every holiday and season will get its own special flag that I'll hang outside my house. I'll have a welcome mat at the door.

I'll have pictures of my friends hanging up on the wall. I'll have paintings from artists I love. I'll have figurines and interesting rocks I found.

I'll have my friend's favorite sweets in the pantry for when they come visit. My fridge will always have food in it. There's vanilla ice cream in the freezer. The fridge won't have any fancy computers and alexas inside, none of my stuff ever will, but it'll have a long lifespan and be easy to repair.

I'll have the family piano and my violin case on top of it. My guitar will be safe in its stand. They'll all be clean, tuned, and well cared for. I'll never be forced to play an instrument ever again, but I can always pick them up again, and it'll be my choice.

There will always be clean water. I can walk around my whole neighborhood safely. I can go to the park and climb something. A grocery store might even be within walking distance! (But there will be a bus line that can take me there if not, or maybe a train, if the future is kind.)

The roof will be well tended. I might have solar power and a backup generator. The house's siding will be nice and clean. I'll have a nice fence that doesn't go too high so I can chat with my neighbors if they like.

I'll have a calendar on the wall to mark off each day, and even if there will be bad days (cause there will always be bad days) at least I know that I lived through another one. And that's definitely good enough.

Spoilers for Batman: Caped Crusader

God this show was beautiful. Obviously it's the same main team that made our beloved BTAS so we already knew things were going to do. The brought back the beautiful meld of 20s art, fashion, architecture, and mob scene while also allowing for the modern representation of women and POC in high esteemed position. All of the men still get what my family has joked of as the "linebacker build" with the occasional skinny man for flavor but the women get variety. Babs has the classic batman woman silhouette, Montoya has broad shoulders, Harley has hips, and Selina got an hourglass.

This show goes back to origin stories but reworks them in a way that made every character exciting, even for someone who probably knows an obnoxious amount about the universe. Some characters were reworked entirely like us getting a female Penguin with sons working under her. While some were more akin to their originals like Harvey Dent (more on him later).

Some characters that aren't seen are name dropped such as Harley mentioning that she studied under Dr. Crane, assuring us that there is still space in this universe for them. Honestly, going into this I was excited that these characters weren't going to be bogged down by the Joker. He's a fun character but there's so much focus on him that other characters, plot lines, and stories tend to get rushed so they can get back to their big money maker. Their decision to keep him out of the first season really helped provide focus for the story being told.

The show balanced its violence well to. I've noticed with a lot of action, especially those with a darker framework like the Batman universe, a lot of the violence kind of blurs together until the creators feel a need to keep one upping themselves to keep the story going and create a shock. I genuinely gasped when "Fire guy" fell. I've been trained that Batman always swoops in to save the villain so having him crash into the car after falling several stories held that shock that the grandiose Joker stunts lack.

I loved Barbra Gordon. Her first appearance I was like "there's Babs" even though they changed her look a bit the essence, the competence, and the caring were all there. I really think they did her justice and I hope she ends up being great representation.

I loved that Jim Gordon wasn't all powerful. A lot of Batman media portrays him as Batman's "guy on the inside" that helps cover things up. They portray him as though he runs Gotham. This Gordon answers to a mayor and has to fight through bureaucratic bs. Alternatively, other depictions try to make him a pathetic guy who is only around to flip on the Bat signal. This show doesn't do that either. They really show the work he is putting in to clean up the force. They show that he doesn't instantly trust Batman and that he tries to do the legal thing until he can't justify ending the good that Batman does.

Detective Montoya. There's a character that not everyone knows but deserves respect. I love them showing how competent she is instead of writing her off as the foolish detective that just gets fired. She is an amazing detective and she works hard to do the right thing. I hope they explore her becoming the Question especially since it doesn't seem like we're making room for Robin anytime soon.

Speaking of Robin, episode 8 hit me like a truck. Right off the bat (heh), name dropping "Dickie" and "Jase" and then showing me their old designs!? Then they go outside and we get a Tompkins name drop!? I love that Doc is giving to the community even if its not as a medical dr she deserved to be mentioned. When Steph was mentioned I started being entertained by wondering how many they can incorporate. When Carrie's name was mention I celebrated. Talk about doing an often forgotten character justice. While it sucks that with 4 of the infinite Robins appear by name in this episode implies that we will not be seeing them in a more major role I do appreciate some of the things that will come of this. I know the fandom loves the Robin's, I am a prime example, but I feel like there is so much love there that any mischaracterization would have been met harshly. This also means no active child endangerment. If they do decide later on to bring on some of the other sidekicks I hope they don't use the name Robin. I know that the name is iconic, so of course they're going to want to use it but without the Grayson backstory it doesn't make sense. This is a real pet peeve of mine, especially with AUs like The Robin King where Bruce named himself that without real reason. They have been doing well so far with renaming where they feel necessary or even skipping over rogue names so I have hope.

Words cannot express how much I have wanted a film representation of Onomatopoeia. The first time I saw him on a screen grab from the comics instantly grabbed my attention. I went down a research hole and I have just always thought he was a wonderful, eerie, and compelling rogue that you just never see. When he stepped in I celebrated. I wish we got more but hopefully we'll see him again and maybe next time we'll get to see some of his more macabre work.

The somehow gave as rich and poor Selina Kyle and I live for it. Recent depictions of Catwoman being a scrappy woman who grew up in poverty are cool but I've always felt like they were just a weak attempt at making her more compelling. The fact that she started as a socialite had always interested me. This telling gives us that while also having her live rough like more modern interpretations because of loosing her funds. It makes sense why she's so good at playing the heiress because she is one. She belongs at those parties.

Dent was wonderful in how subtle but impactful the changes were. He was skeezy from the start. He didn't have this golden child reputation that we tend to get from his backstories. Every interaction we saw throughout the series was painted with him being underhanded and working on the wrong side of the law at times even if it was for the greater good. This was great set up to the part that I really love which is that the melted side of his face becomes his conscience. Typically once his face is melted, things are framed to show the disfigured side to be a corrupting influence, the reason he's willing to commit monstrous acts. In this show it frames that side when he's showing true remorse. It is such a subtle thing but it really highlights that he was always filled with this anger. He was always capable of committing these crimes, but the red tape was stopping him. The disfigurement shows that he is still human.

Harley having a darker motley was teased a lot leading up to this show. We heard that they were exploring her back story without the Joker's influence and that got me excited. I was never a fan of that dynamic but I do understand how she was created and the purpose it served. Making her Asian American was a wonderful choice. She's still unquestionably Harley. I wish they would have brought up some of her gymnast history because I feel its too often overlooked. A lot of people think she got her acrobatics from being crazy. They even gave her a relevant conversation to just drop a little comment about that history but alas. I think she was very well done. They gave her the trademark positive attitude without making it over the top bubbly. They kept the clown motif but justified it by having her make comments on the benefits of humor. Her experiments were dark and twisted without being over the top. They made her queer without making it an afterthought to help move her away from the Joker. Also they gave her a real human body so kudos there.

I mentioned this in a separate post but I really love that Bruce Wayne's voice is the Batman voice and that Brucie is the fake voice. They don't go out of their way to clarify this but the fact that he speaks as batman whenever hes alone with Alfred outside of the Bat stuff he still uses that voice. When he gets concerned for Harvey you can hear his voice starting to slip down into the Batman register like he's struggling to keep up the act.

It makes me sad that so much of the creative community on social media has succumbed into this petty squable about what kind of engagement is worthwile and how creators aren't content machines (which is true! but!) and how they're all going to leave if people don't start giving their energy to these creators in a specific way... like, girl. You know that's extremely toxic, right? You know that your followers and their followers aren't engagement machines only there to spread validation and help all artists grow an audience? That it's not ANY individual's job to build an audience for YOU??

If you've looked at social media these days, literally everything and everyone is screaming for our attention all the fucking time! Hey you're not engaging with the news enough, or in the correct way, or hey you didn't give a statement about this or that or you're not supporting artists and creators, because you are only liking things, which doesn't "do anything". By the way buy this product! Help these hundreds of people fundraising for money, why do you not reblog their posts?! Why aren't you caring enough?? Wow, you only liked this post again? Why aren't you helping these people??

Like. I'm sorry to say but as much as social media and the internet connects us, everyone has the right to determine the level of connection they want to have with you. Creators don't owe content to anyone, but no one fundementally owes them their energy and time (or space on their blog!) either.

Staking the existence of your creative pursuits on strangers, without their knowledge, is doomed to fail. A random person seeing your post and liking it has no clue you have set them an expectation of "helping you build your audience". They are primarily engaging with your work in a way that is comfortable and natural for them - whether or not that is through a simple like, reblog or a comment/ask. It might also reflect on how much they liked the thing they saw - or maybe they want to check it out later, who knows. It doesn't really matter. It does everyone a disservice assuming the worst of people who don't engage in the way you decided is correct and worthwile. You can't force people to be moved by your work, or to want to show it to other people. If they don't they don't. They aren't doing anything wrong by engaging with the things they truly love and care about, and not engaging with things that they do not want to engage with.

Sitting there seething that the people walking by aren't stopping to talk to you isn't gonna make those people wanna stop and talk to you. They don't fucking know or care that you want something specific from them in return for putting yourself out there on a website out of your own volition.

The unfortunate thing about creating art is that it is sometimes very lonely, and difficult. But there are things you can do to alleviate that without putting unfair and toxic expectations on total strangers. At some point you have to just realize, that to get the sort of engagement and conversation you want you need to go somewhere and ask for that. Whether it be your friends, mutuals, people you share fandoms with, or asking a more experienced creator for feedback. Finding groups where everyone wants to share and receive feedback.

I reblog things from my friends, and things that really speak to me or that I have something to say about, because that's what I want to be doing on my little blog. I wanna support the artists I wanna support! It doesn't mean I don't want the art I don't reblog to succeed, but no one can give their time and space to everything and anything they see. Give it to the things you like! Give it to the things you authentically want to give it to! I don't know about you guys but I would rather have 1 reblog by a person who really fucking loved something I did rather than 10 reblogs by people who reblog everything they come across out of some sense of duty.

Also, I am just asking - if the point of reblogs is to spread the work of an artist how the hell is a "dump side blog" with likely no followers going to do anything?? Anyway, sorry to the 5 non-bot and non-dead followers I have, I just needed to have another 0 note rant on the tungle because this shit irritates me to the nth degree. Truly social media's idea about helping and community is so fucked and full of toxic entitlement. Ideally a community is a place where people help each other, but social media is like. million little disjointed islands of semi-communities and constant flow of strangers between them. It really is not the ideal place for that deep sense of belonging.

What would they think, if they saw us?

I think what broke me, was to think in how it would be if the first humans, the hunters and gatherers, saw us.

Obviously they wouldn't have an idea what going on, but in this scenario they have an understanding of our society, at least enough to have the gist of what is going on.

Do you know what I think would be their reaction? Be absolutely amazed, but just as horrified.

We have these special shelters, that prove us not only with a space safe from weather or predators, but that provide us with things like comfortable beds, where to store our food in a safely manner, and even have room for things to give us entertainment.

And the food! So much food, enough that we can be picky, so many flavours and varieties that they didn't even know it existed.

We have amazing medicine, things beyond the comprehension, the ability to detect an illness before it has the chance to show symptoms, things that would had killed them and we just shrug off as a mildly inconvenience.

And yet-

There are empty homes, lots of it in fact, owned by people or the government, and yet there is still people in the streets, to the risk of sickness and violence.

There are people who are hungry, and yet we still throw perfectly good food in landfills, and hide it in a vault (Look up for American Cheese vaults,) rather than giving to people.

We have these amazing medicine, but despite being able to provide help to people in need, we would barrel and let people die because they cannot pay for it.

A lot of people are surprised when they see news of people from this era having a broken bone that was able to heal, or people who may not be able to walk via an injury but still lived way long past that.

We had been poisoned into thinking that is survival of the fittest, that only the strong can make it and if you aren't you should perish, and would claim that it is this way in nature. Not for humans, it has never been this way.

Fact aside that if we are a social species because if we were living in solitary animals we wouldn't had make it as a species- these people would not see someone who cannot walk and just discarded.

They would see a brother, a friend, your elderly mother- these groups were close to each other, we lived in relatively small colonies and someone dying from an injury wasn't just a number, it was a love one who they lost.

They would see us, living in this big communities, this powerful communities that don't need to fear for not finding prey, for rain making difficult to find fruits, and be horrified how we would let our community die.

Money? Do you think they understand why we care so much? Can you tell me how you are going to explain to these people that we invented money as a system as a way to get compensated, and now we care so much we are enslaved to do anything to get more money, including letting people die, and all for a goddamn thing we created and was suppose to help us?

Do you still think dystopian stories are boring and unrealistic? You best start dusting off those old books and movies, after all… you're in one.

BobaBoard would not exist without our amazing tech volunteers, and we are so grateful for their time, expertise, and boundless energy! ❤️ As discussed previously, it's incredible how the team came together this year!

This year, we're further expanding the tech team and onboarding even more collaborators. But beyond that, we're starting up a team of volunteer writers to document all we have created, and to finally keep you all as up to date as you deserve. Sign up here.

Another team we're recruting for is our (affectionately named) "Boba-Sitters Club", BobaBoard's resident group of expert fannish advisors, specializing in community management, engagement, and communication. You can read more info on their task and the group philosophy on the application form itself.

🚀Money money money!

For many reasons, we've set aside focusing on monetization until now. As we move forward, it's time to start really pushing for financial stability to allow our project lead (@essential-randomness) to continue hiring paid collaborators, and maybe even cover her rent one day! So this year we're working on getting her (and the team) more recurring revenue, effectively "hiring" her for the work she's been doing. You can find avenues of support here.

Currently, BobaBoard is entirely financed with Ms. Boba's hard-earned savings and freely-given expertise. While she'll keep focusing on this project and our extended goals full time in 2023, she will need (at some point) to actually earn an income again.

Regardless of how monetization efforts go this year, we're committed to tackling this project with flexibility, creativity, and resiliency in the long-term. It may be easier or harder, but, with the support of the community we're here to serve, we're sure we'll figure it out!

Empowering fandom folks to take control of their online spaces through concrete educational initiatives is important to us, and we’ll be working to do more of that this year. You can read about our current work in our 2022 Achievements roundup.

While the BobaBoard project is dedicated to create the tools fans need to build their communities in the way they want, we're also broadly dedicated to teach them how to collaborate directly on the software that empowers them to do so. Both matter!

UNDRGRND: IN THE BEGINNING

Every day someone tweets that they quit their job to focus on NFTs full time. Someone within our social circle makes a previously inconceivable amount of money and can now turn their hobby into a career. While the rest of us sit back, watch and wait our turn.

The messages we receive from Twitter make it feel like it will never happen to us:

If you’re reading this tweet you’re early to NFTs. _

Perseverance is all it takes to succeed in this space. _

GM, NFT World! Let’s see those unsold NFTs and find you a collector!

I’ve got (insert amount of crypto) to spend! Show me your dope art! I’ll buy something.

This last one in particular frustrates me the most. Artists flock to these tweets with hopes that this thread will be the break they need.

Rarely does this method work.

The Problem

The NFT market can crush an artist’s spirit. The expectations of becoming an instant success do not match the work required. The emotionally draining act of constantly selling yourself along with the energy needed to create can lead to depletion and exhaustion; it’s why we also see so many tweets about mental health in the NFT space.

With so much effort and resilience required to survive in this space the easy thing to do is hop on a Twitter thread. This typically leads to some followers but no sales. So what is the next step for an artist?

Some artists are accepted to gated platforms (SuperRare, Makersplace, Nifty Gateway) giving them an advantage. There the artist must display the talent that the platform deems worthy of their brand or standard. But what about the ones that don’t meet an arbitrary requirement or style? And what about the artists that are never considered due to the sheer volume of applicants?

OpenSea has become a perfect metaphor for the experience of the NFT artist: an ocean filled with NFTs for anyone to purchase, if only you can find it and can discern between value and speculation. At least on SuperRare or other curated sites, a collector can trust that the gatekeepers have put in the time to discern whether this artist is “worthy” of being collected.

The popularity of Hic Et Nunc (HEN) helped bridge the gap between value and speculation by allowing a lower entry point for amateur collectors to simply buy what they love. While HEN has provided a cleaner NFT alternative to ETH marketplaces and created a launch pad for unknown artists - with no curation, artists still go undiscovered by collectors who may love their work.

This is why many of us in this space turn to Twitter to discover new artists.

This is why influencers have taken to profiting off of their following to help artists gain exposure.

This is why shill threads have become a daily practice on Twitter.

On the surface, these threads appear innocent and supportive. Perhaps many of them are sincere, but this is an inefficient way to connect artists with collectors and an even worse way to highlight talent that may go unrecognized.

The Solution

“In 4 months, you’re going to look around and wonder how you got here.”

That was my boss back in February. It took a little longer than that, but he was right.

How did I end up here?

How did I become one of those people tweeting about how NFTs changed my life?

Nine months ago I answered a random post on Reddit:

“Looking for NFT content creators to join our community-driven NFT publication.”

Thus, I met my boss, Sean, the co-founder of Cryptowriter, and began talking about NFTs and the insanity that was beginning to take hold of people and push NFTs into the mainstream.

Since then, we’ve talked every day: late at night spitballing crackpot ideas to each other; tinkering and rewriting articles; arguing (Sean calls them “discussions”) about the best path forward.

Every crazy idea I have, he encourages me to go further, explore it and make it a reality.

I began gaining his trust and vicariously gaining the acceptance of the other founder, Kenny, as well. Freelance writing turned into recruiting artists for interviews. That led to me hosting the podcast, Behind the Pixel, with an open-ended conversation revealing the artist’s inner thoughts, ideas and influences surrounding their art.

Behind the Pixel was also created as an airdrop feature for our Cryptowriter Membership cardholders. Partnering with artists, we feature them on our website, host them on the podcast and then drop a piece of their artwork to our members.

We quickly connected the dots realizing all these pieces worked together and were part of something bigger.

UNDRGRND was born from those “discussions”. UNDRGRND would become an art platform, dedicated to newly discovered artists, elevating their exposure through articles, podcasts and airdrops to our community.

No longer would artists rely solely on the Twitter algorithms and shill threads. We would partner with artists, collectors and curators to filter through the noise and discover talented artists that deserve recognition for their work.

Our Passion

In the early 2000s, there were underground hip-hop, garage-rock and pop-punk bands floating around on the internet in blogs to gain exposure. Those unknown bands eventually became music video stars and grammy award nominees. But it all started on a website just like UNDRGRND.

There was competition and pride among people who knew musicians before they were mainstream. The band, Bon Iver, won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2012, despite their first album being released in 2008. Bands like Saves the Day, Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional were indie label monsters before radio stations began playing their singles. Before Mos Def and Talib Kweli were superstar rap lyricists they were heading the underground hip-hop movement. And before Arcade Fire was on the cover of Rolling Stone, they were receiving accolades on the blog Pitchfork. This was my foundation and a formative experience for who I am today.

Sean started telling stories about his blog, TheFreshBeat, that highlighted underground and unknown electronic music artists. It gained enough of a following that clubs in the Miami area began looking to TheFreshBeat for new undiscovered electronic music.

We talked about how great it was discovering music that no one else knew. We enjoyed sifting through everything to find the gems; it was work but it was fun.

Now, we bring that same energy and mentality to UNDRGRND.

Our Mission

Like Indie music to mainstream pop music, UNDRGRND will focus on unfamiliar names before they become famous.

As a member of our community we hope to fuel your excitement of discovering something new.

We will think in terms of years and not hours. You will not find hype on UNDRGRND. You will not find a quick flip on UNDRGRND. You will find the genuine-honest substance of style and creativity.

We will provide you with diverse viewpoints, our knowledge, and our passion. We will write thought-provoking pieces and explore deeper discussions about art. We will share the wisdom of experienced collectors and curators to help guide and teach a new generation of investors, art enthusiasts and hopefully future millionaires (but remember us when you’re rich and famous, ok?).

The writers at UNDRGRND were recruited to write about the art they bought because they loved it. They are individuals with experience and opinions, who have helped shape my own taste in art. Before I became the Managing Editor of UNDRGRND they took the time to educate me. And now, I’ve recruited them to teach everyone else.

We will purchase art we love and we will write about it.

Through this, we hope to elevate some of the best unknown artists through our writing, podcast episodes and share some of those artists through weekly airdrops to our UNDRGRND Membership Cardholders.

The artists we share will become the storytellers and cultural influencers of the future.

If we elevate everyone together, we all succeed.

My personal goal is to give back to the community that has given me a chance to fulfill my dream. To all the underground artists, writers and collectors that haven’t yet reached their full potential, I will help you reach it. First of all, I hope that wherever you are in life you're healthy and as happy as you can be. I also must confess that I did reactivate my tumblr account from eight years ago to send this message.

In high school, I used to read your Glee fanfics at night alone in my room when I was so far in the closet that I was eating fucking Turkish delight in Narnia. Those stories breathed life into me and unraveled a beautifully complicated and seemingly unattainable fantasy where two women can be together romantically. Granted Santana and Quinn did have a hard time staying together, but you get my point.

I used to get butterflies in my stomach when I saw that there was a new chapter update, not only because I got to crawl away into a queer world, but because the creation of this world was done so carefully and artfully. The complexity of LIALTHI and IBYM are impressive and exhilarating, it was better than watching a thrilling movie. While much of the thrill was the queer representation--if it can really be called "representation," when it was simply was just the queerNESS--but the writing and storylines were beautifully crafted while both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I felt like I experienced every emotion outlined in the text on screen of my iPhone 3 before I panically cleared my browsing history out of fear someone might discover my sins.

You didn't ask, but don't worry, things got better. I'm out and have worked through plenty of internalized homophobia. Even in a healthy gal pal relationship. Glad I didn't place bets on how my future would pan out when I was that sad sack in high school because I'd have lost a lot of money.

I recently reread LIALTHI and IBYM , they were wonderful again as I expected. And while we've come a long way in access to queer storylines and leading characters and shows, I can't seem to stop thinking about Quinn and Santana's story in this series. I'm left a little hollow thinking about them swimming around in the abyss, unfinished, unrequited, undeserving of being left on the precipice.

Let me be clear, this is NOT me shaming you for not finishing the story. These characters are creations of your brain and they don't "deserve" anything. You did unpaid labor that probably benefited thousands of people, and for that you should not feel bad about dropping off. This was meant to more be a "thank you" for creating this world. And while I'm sad the world now exists in a plane that doesn't intersect with our own, I'm better off for crossing through it for the time that I could. Sometimes I like to think that unfinished stories go off into space and finish themselves (wanky) purely for their own benefit.

Like many, I was devastated about Naya's death. I felt like she played a character I knew in so many other ways, from so many other non-canon stories, and now they were all lost. I thought I would feel queasy reading anything in this world again, but it felt like coming home to friends. To friends who were there for me when I needed them most. And who I'm still invested in after all this time.

Now I know I just (genuinely!!) said I feel no type of frustration or sense of injustice that you didn't finish the story, because you're a person who has a real life that exists outside of fanfiction.net. And I can't emphasize enough how that is far more important. However I would low key pay you to finish lol. Kidding, not really, name your price, jk... :)

Writing fanfiction really helped me. I had been "out" for years before I started writing but my imagination when it came to queerness really expanded when I began writing and engaging with the community here.

I want you to know that they got a happy ending. That was the only plan ever for me. They are healthy (working more towards whatever that is bit by bit) and happy together.
