Danny blinked at the small children Ellie was holding the hand of, looking quite proud of herself. The small children- between ten and twelve so somewhere similar to Ellie’s age- who both practically stank of magic and Gods. 

He took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose even as Dan cackled while opening the door more to let them inside. “Alright, what’s your name, kids?”

“B-billy…um, Billy Batson...” “‘m Percy! Percy Jackson.” 

“Nice to meet you two- any idea where in your family you have a god or two, because one of you definitely smells like Zeus and I’m pretty sure Poseidon and I am not dealing with either of my half-brothers.”

Cafe AU where Clifford is a younger new hire and the person who's supposed to train him is just kinda. Apathetic at first. But quickly melts and decides they would die for this little guy. This is their new favorite person. It's totally normal to demand to be on as many of the same shifts as possible as a coworker. And every shift the mentor tries to Be Normal (aka just uh huh's when Cliff talks to him and not prod and pry into his entire life). And mentor is just super good at latte art so they love to show off to Cliff.

Which pays off when Clifford's mom shows up one day and is talking to him while mentor stands at a slight distance (to be normal) and hears "and this is my best friend!" and welp. That sealed it. They will now commit a murder for their favorite coworker if required.

(Katale and Rudyard also exist but they're not coworkers so they're not here. Also in the AU, Clifford just has a name tag for Cliff and mentor doesn't use their real name on their tag but writes Maverick..... based on a tumblr post someone linked me.)

Just saw a video from a town where it's legally required that a head of house must own a gun, and it walked through the house of a guy with guns at the front door, in a secret compartment in the living room, and in a safe upstairs.

That's potentially the worst set of guns you could have.

Hundreds of children die every year of accidental gun shootings. Parents keep saying "he/she knew not to touch it". It's never okay to have a gun around a kid not locked up. Ever. You can find that scene entertaining and cool but in reality it would be extremely irresponsible to have a gun not be locked up in a household with a kid.

Did you read any of the comments on that post? Did you participate in that conversation in any way? Did you consider that we don't actually know if there was a lock on that door? Seriously. We didn't see her open it from outside we do not know if she had to unlock it first. You decided it must have been unlocked. You decided the ammo must have been in the same place, or easily accessible - it would have to be to make the gun a risk, since it's unloaded when Olivia pulls it out. Do you actually know she was being unsafe or did you jump to the conclusion you wanted to jump to bc outrage is comfortable for you?

There is someone coming into her house that shouldn't be.

She kind of expected this,mom had fought with uncle Aiden over this, when they met up to remember Jackson and mourn.

She didn't expect it to happen when she was home.

She puts on her gun glasses and earplugs.

Steady hands, she reminds herself, as she carefully sets up her gun.  She carefully checks it for obstructions, and ammunition. Once she has completed Reds safety checklist.  , she looks for a good position. Then she loads it.

Steady breathing. She reminds herself. Steady hands.

She has had a lot more practice then Red realizes. There is something southing about shooting at the targets. She's controlled, powerful. She wonders if it will be the same if Red takes her hunting.  She's nervous, and keeping her finger away from the trigger. No need to get twitchy.

He's coming near her spot now. Time to speak up.

Raising her voice, and trying to sound as adult like as she delivers her warning.

"Get the hell out of my house before I shoot you!"

He turns towards her, and she considered that maybe she should have just hid. Or quietly left the house while he robbed it.

But what if he was some kind of murder or kidnapper, who would hide and wait for her or mother?

Shit, what if he is?

"I mean it. Don't come any closer. " she warns.

He looks at her.

"Your not going to shoot me. But having you will be good leverage against Aiden. Possibly even better then Nicole". He gets out his gun.

" Put down your gun, and come with me, and no one will get hurt. "

Something in her freezes at the sight of a gun pointed at her.

"Did he load it?" She wildly wonders. "Or is he bluffing?" She's never been so scared in her life.

She doesn't wait to find out.

"When I shoot deer, I aim for the eyes. It keeps the fur in the best condition." She remembers Red saying once.

The head is a safe place to aim, and he is not wearing goggles.

She adjusts as he steps forward,  then she shoots.

It is a clean shot.

She has just killed someone.

She mechanically empties and cleans her gun, unable to process this properly.

"I am a murder", she realizes, somewhere between (emptying) his gun , and putting both in a safe place.

I just fucking killed someone. 

It dawns on her, that she can't be in this room anymore.

She goes to her room, and curls up on her bed, feeling numb.

She can't think. She can't feel. She's empty.

"I just killed someone. " She tells herself blankly, and waits for the world to start majoring sense again.

Later, she's going to therapy, under a false ID.  They all are. Red is paying. Aiden asks where Red is getting the money, and occasionally accuses her of stealing. Red doesn't really deny it, but she does call Aiden a hypocrite for it.

Some days therapy does help. Other days are bad days.  Shes still not talking. Mom and Aiden are mad at Red for teaching her to shoot. Red says she can't undo it, but she can try to help things.

One day Red takes her on a walk.

"I remember you once said shooting a gun was soothing. It made you feel controlled and powerful. I don't know if you want to continue that, but I feel, you would still want to be able to defend yourself. "

She  looked up.  They were outside a Dojo.

"I should have taken you here in the first place. I thought it was just expensive at the time, but I have to remember, not everyone has trainers. The trainers I have, are probably expensive. And maybe this style will be more suited to you.  Karate. To teach you to defend. To build up muscle. There's a reason I started you on the H&R that I did, and that's because most others have recoil that would teach you bad habits. Would probably really mess up your aim. If Im guessing right, If this is something you feel you will enjoy, do you want to go try it out. "

Lena did like Karate. By the end of it, her  muscles were pleasantly sore, and She felt alert and energized.  Red copied down the times for practice, bought me a gii, a belt, and a years subscription.

"I made you an account. You can use it to pay for The subscription and other supplies, like a new gii one day. But I have to see that your putting work into this. I want to see your moves and your belts. No blowing it on drug money, alright , that's just wasteful. "

Lena rolled her eyes. Like she planned on getting into drugs.  When Red kept ranting how expensive they were. She certainly had a better track record at staying out of the hospital.

I’m happy for the people of Minnesota, but as a Floridian living under Ron DeSantis & hateful Republicans, I’m also very envious tbh. We know that democracy can work, and this is a shining example of what government could be like in the hands of legislators who actually care about helping people in need, and not pursuing the GOP’s “culture wars” and suppressing the votes of BIPOC, and inflicting maximum harm on those who aren’t cis/het, white, wealthy, Christian males. BRAVO MINNESOTA. This is how you do it! And the Minnesota Dems did it with a one seat majority, so no excuses. Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #24

The US Surgeon General declared for the first time ever, firearm violence a public health crisis. The nation's top doctor recommended the banning of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, the introduce universal background checks for purchasing guns, regulate the industry, pass laws that would restrict their use in public spaces and penalize people who fail to safely store their weapons. President Trump dismissed Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy in 2017 in part for his criticism of guns before his time in government, he was renominated for his post by President Biden in 2021. While the Surgeon General's reconstructions aren't binding a similar report on the risks of smoking in 1964 was the start of a national shift toward regulation of tobacco.

Vice-President Harris announced the first grants to be awarded through a ground breaking program to remove barriers to building more housing. Under President Biden more housing units are under construction than at any time in the last 50 years. Vice President Harris was announcing 85 million dollars in grants giving to communities in 21 states through the  Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO) program. The administration plans another 100 million in PRO grants at the end of the summer and has requested 100 million more for next year. The Treasury also announced it'll moved 100 million of left over Covid funds toward housing. All of this is part of plans to build 2 million affordable housing units and invest $258 billion in housing overall.

President Biden pardoned all former US service members convicted under the US Military's ban on gay sex. The pardon is believed to cover 2,000 veterans convicted of "consensual sodomy". Consensual sodomy was banned and a felony offense under the Uniform Code of Justice from 1951 till 2013. The Pardon will wipe clean those felony records and allow veterans to apply to change their discharge status.

The Department of Transportation announced $1.8 Billion in new infrastructure building across all 50 states, 4 territories and Washington DC. The program focuses on smaller, often community-oriented projects that span jurisdictions. This award saw a number of projects focused on climate and energy, like $25 million to help repair damage caused by permafrost melting amid higher temperatures in Alaska, or $23 million to help electrify the Downeast bus fleet in Maine.

The Department of Energy announced $2.7 billion to support domestic sources of nuclear fuel. The Biden administration hopes to build up America's domestic nuclear fuel to allow for greater stability and lower costs. Currently Russia is the world's top exporter of enriched uranium, supplying 24% of US nuclear fuel.

The Department of Interior awarded $127 million to 6 states to help clean up legacy pollution from orphaned oil and gas wells. The funding will help cap 600 wells in Alaska, Arizona, Indiana, New York and Ohio. So far thanks to administration efforts over 7,000 orphaned wells across the country have been capped, reduced approximately 11,530 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions

HUD announced $469 million to help remove dangerous lead from older homes. This program will focus on helping homeowners particularly low income ones remove lead paint and replace lead pipes in homes built before 1978. This represents one of the largest investments by the federal government to help private homeowners deal with a health and safety hazard.

Bonus: President Biden's efforts to forgive more student debt through his administration's SAVE plan hit a snag this week when federal courts in Kansas and Missouri blocked elements the Administration also suffered a set back at the Supreme Court as its efforts to regular smog causing pollution was rejected by the conservative majority in a 5-4 ruling that saw Amy Coney Barrett join the 3 liberals against the conservatives. This week's legal setbacks underline the importance of courts and the ability to nominate judges and Justices over the next 4 years.

So I don't really think that it's a secret that Boston has a significant Minotaur problem. It's a pretty common situation for older American cities on the East Coast- centuries of poorly-documented cowpath-style urban growth providing an ideal nesting ground, widespread electrification and plentiful steam tunnels that compensate for the loss of the temperate Mediterranean climate that they're used to. And all this on top of limited institutional knowledge of proper containment tactics at least up until the Greek diaspora started to really blow up in the 20th century. You only have to fuck up the safety checks on one cargo steamer coming in from the broad area of old Minoa and then basically any import controls you put in after that point are closing the barn door after the bulls are loose. So yeah, no secret, it's an issue.

I do think, though, that we've kind of let the specific narrative surrounding the issue get away from us in the usual fashion, the problem people picture when they hear "Minotaur" isn't anywhere close the to the problem as it exists on the ground. I mean people's minds immediately jump to the 1949 Boylston massacre, but let's be real, even though that was really politically useful for finally getting the exit fares on the T removed, that was still a black-swan event, right? Basically every mayor since, like, Hynes has lived in mortal terror of having to manage a repeat of something like that during the mass media era, let alone the smartphone era. So we've got these Theseus kill-teams with their titanium-composite ropes and souped-up cattle prods and bolt guns, we have these constant "track replacement" stoppages on the orange line, and it's fine. It's fine! There hasn't been a serious Minotaur thing within walking distance of a T stop since, like, 2006, which again you can mostly chalk up to the chaos surrounding the dig.

No, the actual danger zones, the silent killers are the exurbs, like West Roxbury, Roslindale, parts of Hyde Park. Relatively dense foliage, bad sightlines, far enough from the urban center that the response times are bad, foot traffic that's basically nonexistent for big parts of the workweek because everyone's either commuting or hunkered down working from home. And, of course, a steady stream of delivery drivers with no political ties to the area. Which is an important element, right? I mean it's kind of baked into the Minotaur's nature, that they have a very finely tuned instinctual awareness of the politics of their situation. Start snagging homeowners, there might be a ruckus. But Amazon does steady business everywhere, and Minotaurs are smart enough to cover their bases, to wait until after the drivers have dropped off your package or delivered your food. So yeah, watch yourself out there. One eye on the treeline at all times. And if you see an Amazon van left idling, get ready to run faster than the driver could.

Danny was tired, like 'I feel it in my bones and soul' tired. And he didn't want sleep at home because there's only so many nights, he could spend lying awake making sure his heart was beating in case his parents checked on him.

Currently he was flying aimlessly not really taking in his surroundings, but he could neither sleep while flying or fly forever. Normally he'd sleep over at Sam or Tucker's, but the Mansons had made it clear that he wasn't welcome at their house anymore and Tucker was grounded. Both would sneak him in if he asked, but he didn't want them to get in trouble for him. Which leads him to decide between his two choices, sleeping in a graveyard, or sleeping in a forest.

The graveyard was a little crowded with all the ghosts that called it home but he could probably find a quiet spot to sleep. The forest had a great view of the stars but was filled with traps from both his parents and the GIW after tracking his ecto-signature. Both options weren't appealing, but he wasn't about to chance sleeping on the roof of his house again. There were too many ghost detecting guns attached to it now. Danny sighed, graveyard it was, at least the ecto from all the shades/ghosts would hide him well enough. Decision made, now all he had to do was make his way over there. But first, where the heck was he? Danny looked around at the unfamiliar grey sky and gargoyles littered around and realized he had no clue where he was. He must have flown too far away from Amity without noticing...Again. It was really becoming a bad habit. Danny stared down at the city's inhabitants that were going home or heading to nightshifts or whatever and dreaded the long flight back to his town. And maybe it was ghost instinct, or maybe it was just his exhaustion. But his brain suggested 'What if I just possess someone?' And to him that seemed like a perfectly logical train of thought. He wouldn't control their body or anything, just sleep in their skin...That did not make it sound better at all. Before he could think twice, someone left a general store, arms filled with stuff and somehow projecting an aura of safety. The two thoughts of 'They look comfy' and 'screw it' clashed together in his head as he made the very stupid decision of performing a swan drive right into the someone. "WHAT THE-" "Don't worry, I'll be gone by morning I just need to sleep" Danny cut off the persons freakout-he should really get their name at some point- he would have explained more but the sleep gods had already done their job. This left one very confused, scared, and freaked out Batkid.
