"Depression doesn’t care who you are or what you’ve been through... It’s an illness that can happen to anyone” —Icebreaker by A.L. Graziadei
I absolutely LOVED this book!! I did the audio on the drive to my parents' house; I'll definitely be doing a re-listen so I can annotate my physical copy because holy hells was it good!
I absolutely love that the story is from Mickey's POV. He's a legacy in the hockey world, slated for top NHL draft pick, and has a lot to live up to. He's going into his rookie year at the same college his dad and grandfather attended (as well as his five sisters). There's a lot riding on him. On top of these pressures, he's dealing with depression. Oh, and did I mention his rival on the ice, Jaysen, is also attending the same school to play hockey? The drama!
Icebreaker by A.L. Graziadei is about falling in love, finding your team (both on and off the ice), and choosing your own path. The mental health rep is phenomenal, the found family vibes are immaculate, and I can't recommend this book enough!!

Let’s Talk Icebreaker
I picked up Icebreakers because it was all over Tik Tok. I'm a big fan of sports romance, especially hockey. There were a lot of things I thought I would like about the book. I loved the idea of the ice skater learning hockey or a hockey player learning ice skating.
But then I started to read it. It was hard to get through. I almost DNF it a few times and even though the book would put me into a reading slump. I had a hard time rooting for them to get together when they kept fighting over stupid or childish things. The whole suspense storyline was unrealistic. If he wanted to go pro as bad as he did he wouldn’t have taken the blame. A suspension that long would make any team looking at him change their mind even after the ending. The whole couple therapy storyline was weird and a little out of character. She never talked to her actual therapist about it and went along with it when she knew it was toxic.
I feel like this book and her writing would have been better if the characters were in high school. They reacted as people in high school would react more than someone almost done with college. Some of the characters feel too young for the stage of life they are in. This book was way too long for the plot she was going with. It could have been cut in half and still covered everything.

“He’s improved his eating habits, he’s reading a book almost weekly to try to improve his brain… I know that sounds silly, but as a captain at 23, that motivates you, that motivates our group… He’s the engine for our team" — Conor Garland Quinn Hughes via the Dropping Gloves podcast

It started with that dead guy next door book but there has been a huge boom in 'book titles that make me think the love interest will be some type of Creature but it's just a boring dude who owns a small business or whatever. but there's also a Creature. peripherally.' *Chuck Tingle voice* Not pounded in the ass by the undead entity haunting my home because a) they are incorporeal and b) they are not the love interest probably because they're incorporeal and everyone wants their romance novels to be [spicy/insert whatever juvenile term we're using this week instead of just saying it has sex in it]. False advertising and cowardice.
