i came back from MangaKamen’s last analysis on Fizz and its incredible what a nothingburger of a video that was, it was really hard to watch

he spends the entirety debunking random edgelords on twitter who were making jokes at the expense of HoH Kid and going on random tangents about virtue signaling and forced rep? literally no one has a problem with Fizz having a heart to heart with another disabled person. clowns appear to be synonymous with sex symbols in HB world and that’s what made people uncomfortable, but this was barely a footnote he quickly goes over in the last minutes of the video and thats it

if it was absolutely necessary to include a disabled child, then i think the scene should have gone like the episode of The Boys (i believe its S01E3): Mammon mandates Fizz to wear a sexualized version of his clown outfit. at the pageant he meets the HoH kid who wants to be a clown and save money for a uniform like his. Fizz still gets catcalled by fans and pressured by Mammon, and while signing his autograph his message is “save your money, i like yours much better”, and this can segway naturally into the panic attack scene

considering that nico lives and adheres to modern society, he's white. yeah yeah 1920s europeans not of anglo saxon descent weren't considered white whatever he doesn't live in the 1920s anymore and besides that a large portion of hatred towards italians was also due to xenophobia and general disdain for immigrants. race is a social construct, nico’s current society considers him white and treats him as such. also im pretty sure nico’s pale because he lost his tan due to hiding out in the labyrinth for a long time, not some magic.

Heya! I have an rp related question regarding a HoH character of mine, if you don’t mind me asking that is, it’s a superhero rp and I’ve been looking for ways they would be accommodated whilst on missions.

I was initially thinking of them not wearing hearing aids for the missions (they wear them for daily life) since they’re going to be grappling from buildings along with fighting, it’s really just to prevent the hearing aids from being destroyed, instead they are accommodated through other gadgets to help prevent scenes like sneak attacks, although I’m not sure if this way holds questionable implications, which is why I’m putting it here.

I have a second idea for accommodating them, which is to have hearing aids implemented into their helmet, the helmet itself is meant to “high tech” esc, even if the hearing aids were to fall or get pulled out, the helmet would catch them, along with the additions of those various gadgets I mentioned, as they’re really big into robotics and mechanics, and can afford to make it, plus I have an idea as to how it’d work. My hesitation with the second one is because we have a scene planned out which would result in the helmet being taken off by someone else as it’s a captive situation which is where I get unsure.

I know scenes like this need to be treaded very carefully, you’ve answered an ask somewhat like this before but the example in the ask was different, though I know all of what you said there still applies here. I’m wondering, for this specific scenario, if I do go with the second one, would there be any additional advice for sensitively going about it?

I am always excited about inventive hearing and accessibility aids in the SFF genre, so this ask makes my brain go BRRR. Thank you, anon!

TL;DR of my answer:

Hearing aids and alternatives in combat are fine (and encouraged!), especially when the deaf character has input in their design and implementation. The only real issues come in if the aids are foisted upon the character or if they entirely negate the disability / function like magical cures. It's also a good idea to consider realistic limitations and necessary upkeep.

Having an aid taken away is a thorny issue, which someone is probably going to be upset about either way. My opinion is that it's sometimes a fact that characters do horrible things to other characters as part of the story, which taking away a character's HA or other device(s) counts as. Still, it's important to be aware of the potential issues when writing these scenarios, and to always use nuance.

Full answer below the cut.

Hearing aids (and alternatives) in combat

What kind of HAs does your character use in everyday life? If they use any kind of open or behind-the-ear style where part of the HA will be out of the ear, then I understand why they would seek alternative aids in combat. There's a definite risk of damage/getting lost (at worst) or the hook or housing getting caught, resulting in the whole thing being displaced and reducing performance (at best). Other limitations with these styles include:

sweat and earwax buildup in the mould or ear tip

Water clogging the mould or ear tip

Condensation buildup in the tube that connects the ear tip/mould to the housing.

For that last point, I always had to use one of these bad boys to pump the condensation out after PE:

(As an aside, no HA-using superhero would go far without the means to do impromptu maintenance on their aids. I always had a little hearing aid maintenance kit in my schoolbag (my HAs are open fit BTE models), which included one of those pumps, some wires and brushes for cleaning into the tube and ear mould, and a battery level tester.)

Inner ear HA styles, on the other hand, shouldn't pose those same issues, and are actually recommended for people who play sports, afaik. They fit close inside the ear without any external parts, and there are models available with sweat protection (and even some that are water resistant, I think). Note that not all styles of hearing aid are suitable for all types of deafness, so it's not necessarily as simple as switching styles for different situations, but it's still something to research.

If your character is into robotics and tech, and has the means, then it absolutely makes sense that they'd come up with aids for themself. The helmet being a backup that can catch the HAs is actually a super cool idea! And like I've said, I'm delighted by adaptive gadgets and inventive accessibility aids. It's always doubly cool when those aids are designed by – or with input from – the deaf/disabled characters themselves. I.e., when it's an informed, personal choice to use an aid, and not something that is gracious bestowed upon that character by someone who's there in an abled saviour capacity. So long as you avoid that particular pitfall, you're doing fine.

Finally, there's the blanket caveat of "Make sure the aids don't ~miraculously~ cure the disability so it's like your character Isn't Really Disabled", but it sounds like you're already well aware of that. So long as the aids assist with the disability instead of conveniently erasing it (i.e., allowing readers and writers to forget about it for palatability's sake, or to make telling the story easier), there isn't an issue in having characters use them.

Taking away the aid(s)

I apologise if this next bit is going to feel like a non-answer, but it's not an issue that I have an easy answer for. All I can do is tell you my personal opinion, as a moderately deaf person who choses to rarely use his HAs.

My answer boils down to: it's complicated, because the limitations and the risks are realistic, but it is tricky ground to walk because of prevalent ableist tropes about disabled people being liabilities. At a very basic level, it's kind of analogous to blindfolding a captive so they're disoriented by lack of a sense, which is a tried and true thing that villains do in stories when they take captives. So yes, exploiting any vulnerability or weak point* is shitty, but it's also just A Thing That Could Reasonably Happen.

*weak point meant in a completely neutral, context-dependent way, btw. I'm not saying that deafness or using hearing aids makes you weak; I'm saying that someone desperate/callous/evil (or some other flavour of Opposed to the Protagonist) would probably take any advantage they can get, depending on their morals.

If a villain does draw a line at taking away a character's accessibility aid, then it should be because it says something about the villain's character, motives and/or role in the narrative. Similarly, if they do take that aid away, it shouldn't just be because they're Evil™ and whumping on the deaf character is an easy way to show that.

There needs to be internal consistency of characterisation for all your characters, which includes both your deaf protagonist and your antagonist. And, no, it's not necessarily going to be comfortable for a deaf or disabled person to read, but if something awful is happening to the characters, then maybe that's the point. (And we as readers have the responsibility to realise that our discomfort isn't always the author's responsibility. Sometimes fiction is uncomfortable and we can just walk away from it!).

But also, yes, sensitivity is important. Be aware of harmful tropes and stereotypes, and steer clear of them, for example, having the deaf character become suddenly helpless/no longer being "useful" to the team. Having an aid taken away is scary and disorientating (and also a violation! Which it's entirely natural to be upset or angry about!), but deaf people have many coping mechanisms, gathered by necessity throughout our lives. Some, like lip-reading or reading body language, aren't always reliable, but they're still there as an option.

Finally, think outside of the deafness aspect and work with the whole character. Ask yourself what else could the captor could exploit or suppress? I.e., loyalty to their teammates that can be leveraged, a dark secret, important knowledge that they need and that the captor has, a fear of heights, useful powers or abilities, etc. It's easy to limit yourself to only the deaf aspects when you're over-focusing on accurate representation, which ends up defeating the object.

Sorry totally missed responding to your last post from me.

Regarding Even Sun and Last Twilight, which you asked my thoughts on.

Even Sun is...okay? I mean I like parts of it, but mostly I was confused a lot? And I would have really liked to see a sequel or something extra with the boxer boys, I feel like they are a pair that would be great to have another crack at. Basically I watched it for BounPrem and I got them. I don't think it's particularly good but I also don't think it's terrible. Just confusing. I have watched it twice now trying to figure out what really happened, still don't know other than the guy played by Prem was made into a soft island boy by the soft island boy played by Boun. Definitely some cute moments and one scene in particular that had me laughing so hard. It was bad but funny. If I could make gifs I would do a gif edit with the "whips and chains excite me" song from Rihanna, S&M i think. This is not to say their is any S&M in the show, but those who have seen it will understand I think. Very funny. There were some cute moments that I really enjoyed, but not their best work in my opinion, but also so not their worst 😬 I would say my fav moment was the whips and chains moment as humor but the other moment that was my fav is a toss up between them on the beach towards the end and the motor scooter moments. Something about the way he was practically falling asleep on the back of the scooter was cute. "Stupid (affectionate) angry boy meets island boy and eventually becomes an island boy, too."

Last Twilight...I have very complicated feelings about the show. Very complicated. As someone who has a disability I was very excited about this (mine is hearing related, specifically HoH) and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. And my disappointment is not just about the disability side of things, there were a lot of confusing choices that were made by who knows who, probably the writer and or the director, but I was sad and kind of pissed about some of the choices. But they did do a lot of wonderful things that I really loved, and I do love the pair, even though bad choices were made in my opinion. I just on the whole feel like the two mains were ripped off. But I loved the way they came together, I love how they were with each other. I love that Mhok tried, more than people expected him to. I love that they didn't shy away from Day being angry or spoiled. I loved the brother Night and PhoJai. I also wanted to punch the mother out a lot but that is a whole thing I'll take to my therapist 🤐 Make no mistake, it's a good series. Very good, it has some solid moments, so many in fact. I just feel like they fucked up a lot towards the end that kind of did away with the good stuff they did before that was so right. Would probably watch again one day if I ever run out of shows to watch but I doubt that will happen, but I'd like to sit down and give it another go, but I'd want to watch it with someone who loved it. I will say my fav moment was the hands moment. Once you've seen it you know what I mean, it was PERFECT.

Anyways I've watched so many BLs now, I just finished the 51st one. I dabble in all the different countries for them and find each one has their own unique qualities and annoying ones too! I have 6 on deck that I am having a hard time finishing, two of them are ones that came highly recommended in the fandom but I just cannot see what people are seeing with them, and no I won't tell you in case anyone or you really love them, as I don't want to incur any wrath. It might be an age thing or a life thing and that's okay!

Yes, I agree. It is super interesting to see how the different countries approach the same genre. It's even more fascinating to see the difference in approach through remakes and adaptations (e.g. Cherry Magic and Why R U?).

Re your current watchlist: I firmly believe that you should drop shows if you're not enjoying them. As completionist, this goes against every fiber of my being, but enjoyment comes first. However, long have I studied, and so I shall now impart my wisdom:

He would be a bad boy until he’s made to be a good boy. Honestly he likes to be a bad boy because he knows it will make his mommy treat him even better ;)

He’s not QUITE a brat but it’s definitely in that realm. Sometimes, the switch will happen immediately when things get sexual, but sometimes he puts up a bit of a fight in the beginning.

But his mommy would know how to get him into that sweet subspace. And then he’s the best boy.

His punishments include:

- being made to watch his mommy enjoy herself without being tied up but also unable to touch himself. This is one he likes to break, and it always ends “badly” for him.

- being edged into oblivion.

- and when he’s actually done something quite wrong, withholding sex altogether. That man is so stressed this would drive him insane.

(Note: I do think Gortash is in to much rougher stuff than this BUT because part of the appeal of the mommy kink is also a level of safe space, I don’t think rough play would be used as a form of punishment for him. It’s something that can happen during sex but I actually think it’d be really important to have it not be a punishment given his HoH experience.)

His rewards include:

- being tied up and used. This reward is sometimes framed as a punishment, but it’s definitely a reward.

let me get uncomfortably real with you for a sec i’m horrible for comparing myself to others, sweet anon. especially with my writing. i do it a lot when i’m not writing, funnily enough. and i suffer from what i like to call ‘writer worries’, which encompasses the usual questions like ‘is my writing good enough?’, ‘am i conveying the right thing?’, ‘will people understand this?’, ‘is this too flowery?’, etc. i have my own strengths and weaknesses in my writing and i feel too well aware of them at times and it eats me up!! i’ve been writing since i was around 12 years old and it’s something that i’ve always loved, so i don’t see myself ever stopping, but i do discourage myself a lot. which is unfair to me but i do my best to reassure myself that my writing is good! it makes sense! people like your lovely self tell me that you enjoy it and that should be enough!! 🤍 and it is!

ok so i think gortash is cis male and he didn't really question his identity as a kid, unless he was assigned like female roles in the games he played with other kids cause they thought he was a bit weird. he didn't mind them, mostly cause he had his own mommy issues and it was oddly healing to play as a mother figure (fic recommendation that gave me this idea in the first place).

in the house of hope, he was looked down upon in many ways, being called names was one of them. obviously there were the typical insults and "boy" in a derogatory way but i think since the whole point of being jailed was to be beaten down into an empty slate for Raphael to use and manipulate, it was also important to strip him of his identity as a whole. Nubaldin was probably great at that, providing equal amounts of both physical and emotional abuse, so i imagine there were points were he was punished for using his own name/pronouns. like, being asked what he is, enver giving a derogatory answer hoping it's the right one and nubaldin punching him anyway because "I used 'he' instead of 'it' for your pathetic ass, you should have corrected me"

once he hit the prepubescent age, they probably started having fun with calling him a girl (coupled with the sexu@l abuse he probably experienced), literally gaslighting him saying he was always a girl, he had no name, are you really that stupid? etc etc. obviously this confused him as it's difficult to keep a straight idea of your self-identity when you're concussed every other day. one minute he was less than dirt, the next he was a rat, then an idiot girl who can't even remember her own name, to the point he was so worn down he just accepted whatever they threw at him. If Raphael wanted him to be a boy, so be it, if he wanted a man, so be it, if he wanted a girl, so be fucking it.

he probably struggled a Lot with puberty too,, it came late to him, malnourished as he was, so the fact that he didn't even have body hair despite his body growing aided the gender misidentity. i think he'd often stare at the mirror, at his body and face, try to understand who he was behind the scars, losing control of himself and his mind. he didn't see himself as human, he was just a thing that was sold and then used and reshaped in whoever's hands he ended up like clay. he'd often ask Hope about it, try to understand how he was viewed by someone who wasn't malicious, and she'd answer as honestly and hopefully as she could but let's be honest, her riddles and tangents most likely just confused him further.

not to mention his twisted attractions?? like through all that, he had to somehow figure out what he was attracted to?? i think a healthy mix of sexu@l trauma and stockholm syndrome ended up contributing to his toxic view on relationships and sex as a whole. there's a reason Durge was the only one he was able to form a genuine relationship with.

anyway, all of it definitely ties in with his name change, too. not only did he struggle with rejoining society after HoH, he had to figure out himself all over again. i think he created the persona of a young, powerful and ambitious man named Enver Gortash and leaned into it so much it simply consumed him. he literally gaslit himself into curing his gender questioning like the girlboss he is.

also if you call him by she/her pronouns he'd most likely answer out of pure instinct

Oh but they were a staple of their time when they were around. A good piece of RPC history some of us can look back on fondly and reminisce about.

A lot of drama, but ultimately he was my son when I took a break from Mich. I loved him with all my heart. Put all I could into him. Even met @yesfxckyxu for the first time on Satoshi's blog. Jack and Satoshi were the OGs. Way before Jack met Mich.

Then...

I joined a DR RP discord server.

At first it was great! People loved him and overall he entertained the crowd until I made a DR verse for Mich then she ultimately took the spotlight. But he was still there!

Then I screwed him over.

Yeah I gave him pretty distressing lore due to the lore of the entire game that was being hosted continuing with Musey being the next mastermind. I ruined his life. Pretty damn bad... And now he's no longer who he used to be. He's pretty much unusable at this point and it breaks my heart to know what I used to have versus what I've done to break him. It was never my intention to break him like this, but now I face the consequences. He's constantly suffering and I can't do a thing. There's very little redemption for him that would have a semblance of realism to it. Maybe someday I'll bring him back but for now...

He deserves a long... Long rest.

Classic Sans: because really, how could i not? my original skeleton crush. from his beautifully purposefully shitty humor, to his time and space jokes, to using his god-level powers largely to joke and work multiple jobs and care for/tease his brother… to everything he goes through and struggles with and stands for in geno routes (which gods, i never could play). frankly, i’ve… never felt so connected to a character. his depression and his humor, his deeply caring but humor-inclined relationship with his brother, his quick wit and cleverness, everything - i love him, so very, very much.

Red: it’s kinda funny how over time the aus, while still being “copied alternates” of one another, have ended up so distinct as different individuals to me. with Red… all the things i love about Sans, but with a twist - i seriously would get along with him too well. i’m kinda a total natural flirt with anyone who i end up friends with, my humor can get pretty dark and/or risque with those who match it - i love the stars and when i’m close to someone, frankly, i just want to be with them and talk through the insomnia-ridden nights and dark thoughts and funny stories and the barbs around the kindness… i’d give him a run for his money, too, i like to think, since i’m very much the ‘kill em with kindness’ type who also gets shit done because there’s no other option, really. not to mention im fiercely protective of those i care about too - i never hold myself to the same level of importance, so - mmm, i feel like he’d… get that. especially if/when we’d get close… i have a feeling there’d be a lot of late nights that didn’t feel quite so lonely.

Russ: i know not a lot is written on him, and when it is, it tends towards a drooling or uncaring to the point of mild incomptence sort of guy - but i don’t… interpret him that way. i view him as having the rough and flirty and dark humor of Red, and the sweet and mischievous and slightly more laidback inclinations of Stretch at his core. i want to connect with him, to have the inevitable flirting and quick wit sessions of easy-going but pointed jokes, and to slowly but surely end up close to him, to have those late night sessions where we seek each other’s company for both fun and comfort, for friendship and understanding. to take a break from the hanging worries and anxieties and responsibilities and just… benon the same page as someone. play videogames and make up bs silly and hilarious backstories for poorly written npcs, or watch shitty horror movies or excellent comedies, more campy scifi - to cook for him late in the night because it’s a stress reliever for me even though i cant eat the things i love to make. to drink too much coffee, or make poorman’s cocktails, or tell stories and talk theories on whagever. to hear him relax and feel like he doesn’t have to be on edge, to hear his stories and his jokes and his quality flirting, heh. i… dunno why, but i just feel really connected to him, despite how little i see him around.
