so the insomnia mv was edited together in a purposefully ambiguous way, with scenes that are nonchronological or metaphorical, representing fuchi's chaotic mental state.

first there's the shooting

then this shot of a truck driving itself

which then cuts to the seven car pileup

and then transitions to the news story covering it, presumably the next day

translation: indiscriminate shooting with a model gun at shibuya scramble crossing. an indiscriminate crime?

below that: passenger car, truck, minivan etc. involved in seven-car serial collision incident

the date and time is 11pm on the 28th of march, which happens to be 1 hour before what I'm assuming is fuchi's 18th birthday

sidenote: this crossing is literally the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world

anyway the police come for him and he runs for it.

then there's this sequence of him wrestling for control with his inner child, which is obviously not meant to be taken literally

along with this shot of him tumbling down the stairs into the path of a truck

however, that stairwell is nowhere to be seen in the shot after he's actually been hit by the truck, and if you look closely he still has both shoes on his feet

so we can infer that the whole sequence did not happen in reality

then there's this newspaper from the 30th of march. the headline says 'successive accidents in tokyo'. on the right: 'collision with a driverless* truck' and on the left: 'accident in the same spot as...' (cut off) *literally: in motion with no driver(human), not referring to self-driving technology

the words are blurry but basically the right part describes the seven-car pileup from the 28th again, and the left part describes fuchi's collision with the self-driving truck. the good news is at least the pileup doesn't seem to have killed anyone, with the text describing 10 people with light to severe injuries, and 2 people in a coma.

the caption to the left of the photo says it's the scene of the accident, taken at 11pm on the 29th in shibuya, tokyo

so yeah piecing all that together, fuchi went on a sleepwalking shooting spree with a model gun on the night of the 28th of march, caused a massive traffic accident that injures several people, presumably just??? left?? and went home?? they just let him? i guess all the people ran away or were too busy dealing with the 7 smushed cars. then on the night of the 29th he sees the news on the tv, the police knock on his door and he runs. one mental breakdown and dreamworld sequence later he ends up getting hit by a truck in the same intersection as before.

edit: as some in the notes have pointed out, the truck is reported as 'driverless' because his zingai mr. creepypasta was the one driving it, and it's invisible to most normal people. it's also foreshadowed (represented?) by this shot during the scene where his child self is rampaging.

anyway now he's in jail. rip.

okay, but putting aside the comedic aspect of this, it is concerning the amount of people who are prompted to vote for candidates just because it's funny. I'm not the biggest fan of how his policy about the boarder sounds [Site], but I do implore anyone who is able to vote in the 2024 US election to please research other candidates.

The media is only going to continue pushing the idea it's inevitably going to be Trump vs Biden 2.0 and we have no other options, that we have to vote for Biden again because of Project 2025. Is that whole thing terrifying?

But voting for Biden will not solidify our safety from that. Biden is exactly like the rest of them. He always has been. You can't make the lesser of two evils argument when they're both just plain evil.

I was given conflicting instructions on pre-surgery prep and turned away from scheduled surgery because the surgeon instructed me to follow a different set of guidelines than was on my paper (in those words; he EXPLICITLY TOLD ME to ignore the sheet and do something different) when trying to sort this out with the receptionists, the manager on duty was extremely rude and condescending and behaved like a cranky toddler when I told her that I received conflicting instructions ("I'm confused because the surgeon gave me explicit instructions to XYZ" "no. >:|" "...um, yes, he did" "No. >:|" )

They are unprofessional, disorganized, rude, and incompetent and you absolutely should not trust Massachusetts General Hospital for your oral surgery needs because they have demonstrated they cannot be trusted to give good medical care.

If you need an alternative, tufts dental school is an excellent resource. The access can be tricky but AFAIK they do have financial assistance available.

never not thinking about the interaction between moonstruck rikki and zane in 1x18 'bad moon rising' btw. rikki is feeling so utterly alone and isolated, she exiles herself to mako island in the middle of the night so as not to poison anyone else with her perceived dysfunction. yes she is literally setting everything around her on fire and has to escape for safety reasons lol but it's a metaphor for her feeling like she is a volatile force in the lives of her loved ones

then zane wanders by and gives her the last thing she would ever expect from him: kindness. compassion. empathy. arrogant, selfish, obnoxious zane sits with her in the fire and lets her speak about how overwhelmed she feels as a result of her self-imposed loneliness. not only that, but he tells her he understands, that he sees her perspective and feels that very same sense of isolation. maybe he tells her she looks a mess because he's zane lol but he does so in the same breath as gently removing a piece of debris from her hair

that same gesture prompts rikki to lean in and kiss him. of course this ends with them surrounded by a ring of fire and zane passed out cold, signifying that any attempts for rikki to find true, healthy, meaningful connection is impossible. ultimately she sees herself as a destructive force, hurting those she wishes to care for. she later proclaims to emma that she is better off on her own

then, despite all of this, rikki and zane fall in love. they share an unspoken agreement that he won't press her on things she isn't ready to talk about, that night on mako island or her inclination towards mystery. the care and empathy and mutual respect they shared that night reverberates throughout their entire relationship. they have shown one another a type of vulnerability they never display with anyone else, understand one another like two sides of the same coin. rikki herself says it best: zane gets her.

Steve doesn't know when he stopped caring about killing people. It didn't bother him until he started caring again.

It's not anyone unusual, is the thing that gets him. It's a nameless, almost-faceless drug smuggler that he didn't even mean to kill, but he shot with intent to disable and a little too much carelessness in a rush to stop the ship they came in on, and when he finally loops back around there's a pool of blood and a corpse with a busted femoral artery.

He's kneeling down, checking a pulse even though it's clearly absent, removing weapons even though he'll clearly have no use for them, when his fingers brush against a thin edge in the inside pocket of the off-the-rack grey suit jacket the guy's wearing.

When he pulls it out, it's a photo. He has to look down to check that it's the same guy in it, partially because death rictus changes a face, especially when your comparison is smiling and happy, and partially because he just hasn't looked at his face properly. It's the same guy, his arm around a similarly smiling woman shoulder-height to him and so close in features she has to be his sister, with a chubby-cheeked frizzy-haired kid straddling his shoulders and holding onto the woman's hand.

One of the first things the military teaches you, explicitly or not, is to erase personhood. Your own, and your enemy's. Numbers, statistics, body parts and targets and usefulness.

He puts the photo back into the dead man's jacket and moves away. A tech comes at some point, body-bags him, and Duke is there and the rest of his team have it well in hand, so he goes back to where their cars are parked, boosts himself onto the hood of the truck, and waits.

Kono walks past at some point, but they're still in the midst of cleanup and HPD handover, so even though she does slow and ask, "You okay, boss?", when he replies in the affirmative she nods and keeps moving.

He remembers himself before. He remembers when it would never would have occurred to him not to think that every person with a bullet in them is a person with a family. A person with a life, at least before they were a person with a death.

He doesn't bother trying to count. The impulse washes over him, but it would take hours with military records and Five-0 reports to calculate anything even close to accuracy.

Himself before was decades ago, but also not that long ago. It was target practice at the Academy and work behind computers in Military Intelligence and crawling through mud with a similarly young Freddie by his side.

Himself after, apparently, is sitting on his own truck at the edge of his own city watching his family and his family's family and his friends and his friends' friends move efficiently through shipping containers and body bags.

Eventually, Danny finds him. He takes one look at Steve's face; he doesn't say anything, just leans against the hood next to Steve and waits.

Eventually, Steve finds the words. "I don't think the military would like me anymore, Danny."

It's not all that new a state of affairs; he got driven by revenge and tattoos in non-regulation places and too many personal attachments and he remembered how to have fun in quiet spaces and how to love in loud ones. He started caring again.

"Good," Danny says, harsh and definite, and Steve realises with a start that the things that would debase him in the eyes of his country are probably exactly the same reasons Danny - not just Danny, his whole family - would cite for loving him. Except the tattoos, maybe.

He can't bring himself to be upset about it in the face of that.
