hey I am. REALLY sorry for the ask
I'm coming from the ROTTMNT font post- is there a way to get the font on ibispaintx that you know of?-
HELLO! dw, i love to help
the links i added have the .ttf of the fonts, thats the raw font file a computer or cellphone uses to display fonts! on computers it needs to be installed to be implemented. i'll be honest, idk how to install fonts to a phone.
i also dont know how ibispaint works, if it reads from its own font pool or the device's fonts. either or, i googled a bit and people say its as easy as importing the .ttf file to ibis paint, others say android has changed and now doesnt allow that. it would require you to find out what you need for your version/device (ibis is on pc? i didnt know!)

new phone going well so far. I'd forgotten how much of a faff it is to get everything to work
1 - When you're using 2FA: you need a code sent by email but you haven't set up that email yet. You need the code to set up the thing that'll get you into your emails. No, you're not getting my mobile number, thankfully the old phone works while kept charged.
2 - 12 different security alerts + 24 notifications because you used a different phone to use some app that has access to nothing important.
3 - Removing google. tentacle sucker by tentacle sucker in 4 different places. Oh hey what's this left swipe to my phone home screen?! no I don't want the news by google, what even is its name to disable it?
4 - Incremental updates. the OS has changed a few times since late 2017 but we're going to download the full 1.5GB for half hour then pretend we're up-to-date, then repeat. Thank goodness i'm on Wi-Fi, slow Wi-Fi but still - my mobile plan only has 100MB a month.
5 - We said we synched/cloned your preferences but that was a lie: firefox (no adblock, new sponsors on the homepage), swiftkey (different languages, layouts, font size, privacy settings reset), anything google related.
oh well at least it's ten times easier than trying to disable the spying on a smart TV.
but for a moment there after I'd cloned my hard drive (remember how windows said that was a bad idea and it turned out fine?) I forgot you can't just clone a phone.
I intend to make this beautiful little thing work For Me so on we go to probably hour 8 now, of multitasking while it does it little updates and I roll back whatever privacy settings got reverted and remove bloatware. I could of course flash the thing but it'd take that much time in research and being sure I'm not bricking a nice working phone. not ready at this point.
// This is not helped by the nerd infighting on which stripped android os is better.
I don't mind the stupid usernames I ran win7 super unfucked haxxor edition by touhouhusbando or whatever for a few years but seriously, researching is like "here is the one, the real deal, the bestest": three notes down "btw I'll have headphones working in a month or so - sent in 2022" //
Update 7, we're now upto 2020 the last couple have been 4gb. I should have probably rooted my phone and flashed darkjoker's super android stripped extreme (or whatever). OTL

So I’ve been looking for royalty free sounds effects to use for this theatre project, and youtube recommends to me this video about how scrolling is an addiction and the thing that will provide what you’re looking for is actually to create something.
It feels like an important reminder, but I wonder for how many people that’s new information.
It doesn’t need to be brand new to be useful of course. But I remember everyone (not really, but in a teenage ‘everyone else is..’ sense) getting smartphones. And knowing in my bones it was a terrible thing.
Not like morally or that it was actually a portent of doom.
Just that people would suggest to me that I should get an iphone because it was better and look at all the cool features and if you don’t have one you can’t do this and I sent you that picture did you not see it oh right you don’t have an iphone.
That nonsense.
And I knew in my bones that to get an iphone would be a very bad thing.
At the time I had one of the early nokia smartphones. So I was able to use maps and look up train timetables and stuff. But it didn’t have the fun brightly coloured games. None of the look you swipe three together fruit ninja subway surfer stuff. There were a few android games back then but they were very nineties in appearance. They didn’t have the same Must Do This draw of bejewelled, which I could get caught in three hour loops of. But it was okay because that was only available on the desktop computer. I couldn’t carry it with me everywhere. So as long as I wasn’t sitting ate desk there was no risk.
And then my nokia screen broke and I got a new phone for my birthday.
I’ve known forever that the dopamine generator is a bad fit for me. It turns out they’re not that great for most people, but I knew in advance, from my reactions to popcap games that a little pocket computer that enables 24hr gaming was a terrible idea for me.
‘Are you having fun or are you just making ice?’
I realised I was making ice before I got the fancy phone, before that excellent phrasing. And deleted those game soft my ipod.
But there are always more of them. And when you get rid of those you find out that ‘social’ media is more of the same.
I used to schedule myself thirty minutes of a morning while I had my coffee to use fb and keep up with what my friends were doing, and force myself to at least like things on days when I couldn’t comment (which was most; anxiety is fun) in an effort to stay involved. Every time is see any of them in person they’d be talking about so and sos wedding and how lovely it was and do you remember when such and such three weeks ago.
People don’t hate you for being introverted. But if you never try to organise events or activities pretty soon you stop getting invited to theirs. Because they figure if they weren’t invited to your birthday party, they don’t need to invite you to theirs.
That primary school adage translates all too well to every other social opportunity.
When my birthday is four months away, I can see myself organising something. Inviting people to so stuff. And then I remember that I haven’t spoken to any of those people in more than a decade.
Really starting to see why journaling as a mental health activity has central points you’re meant to cover. Without a bullet point list to tell me what to write it normally devolves into a spiral.
(Reads opening paragraph. Oh right.)
So I’m creating this post. I live the concept of journaling. But a brand new blank book with a pretty cover is something that I’ll ‘ruin’. (Writing in is what it’s for. It’s kind of the opposite of ruin. Yet here we are.)
An electronic journal where I can delete things over and over, I can change the font so I have nice handwriting. Wow that’s way too big.
I can move the stickers.
It’s like creating, but no commitment. It’s like I’ve made something, but there’s no evidence I’ll need to destroy later.
Creation lite.

Mobile Website Size: How to Optimize Your Site for Smartphones in 2025
In today’s mobile-first digital world, a user’s first interaction with your website is more likely to happen on a smartphone than on a desktop. Whether you’re running a business, launching an eCommerce store, or publishing a blog, your mobile website size plays a crucial role in determining user experience, page speed, and even SEO performance.
But what does "mobile website size" really mean? Is it about screen dimensions? Page weight? Layout responsiveness? The truth is, it encompasses all these aspects—and optimizing them can significantly enhance how users engage with your site on mobile devices.
In this post, we’ll break down what constitutes mobile website size, explain why it matters, and walk you through best practices to optimize your site for peak performance on smartphones and tablets.
What Is Mobile Website Size?
When professionals refer to mobile website size, they are usually talking about three interconnected factors:
Visual dimensions – The screen width and layout behavior on different mobile devices.
Page file size – The total weight of your website (in KB or MB), affecting how fast it loads.
Responsive design – How your website adjusts its appearance based on screen size and orientation.
These three components affect everything from usability and speed to search engine rankings and bounce rates.
1. Mobile Screen Dimensions: Designing for the Right Fit
Smartphone screens come in various sizes, but there are a few common standards designers typically follow: Device TypeCommon Widths (in pixels)Small phones320pxStandard phones360–375pxLarge phones390–414pxTablets768px and above
Designers often start with a 360px width base layout for mobile because it comfortably fits most modern devices. However, instead of hard-coding this width, it’s essential to use responsive units (percentages, em, rem) so the layout adapts smoothly across devices.
Pro Tip: Avoid horizontal scrolling at all costs. Your layout should naturally scale to any screen width, from iPhones to Android tablets.
2. File Size: Keep It Lightweight for Speed
The total page size—measured in kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB)—refers to the combined weight of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, videos, and other resources on your web page.
Why It Matters:
Slow-loading websites lead to high bounce rates.
Google uses page speed as a ranking factor.
Mobile users often operate on limited data plans or slower networks.
Ideal Page Size Benchmarks:
Excellent: < 1 MB
Acceptable: 1–2 MB
Risky: > 3 MB
How to Reduce Mobile Website Size:
Compress images using tools like TinyPNG
Use next-gen formats like WebP or AVIF
Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML files
Use lazy loading for images and videos
Eliminate unnecessary plugins and third-party scripts
Even small savings in file size can lead to massive improvements in page speed, especially for users on 3G or congested networks.
3. Responsive Layout: Adaptability Is Key
Responsive web design ensures your content automatically adjusts to different screen sizes. This involves:
Fluid grids that use relative units like percentages
Flexible images that scale with screen size
CSS media queries to trigger layout changes at specific breakpoints
Sample CSS Media Query:
cssCopy
Edit
@media (max-width: 480px) { body { font-size: 16px; padding: 10px; } }
Responsive layouts allow your site to work beautifully on everything from small phones to large tablets, maintaining a consistent and user-friendly experience.
4. Viewport Meta Tag: The Foundation of Mobile Optimization
One line of HTML is essential for properly displaying your mobile website:
htmlCopy
Edit
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
Without this tag, your site may appear zoomed-out or shrunk on smartphones. The browser will assume your site is designed for desktop and try to scale it down, often with disastrous results. The viewport meta tag tells the browser to use the actual width of the device as the starting point for rendering.
5. Mobile Typography and Touch Targets
Your text and buttons must be optimized for readability and usability on small screens.
Typography:
Use font sizes no smaller than 16px for body text.
Avoid custom fonts that increase page load time.
Stick to high-contrast color schemes for visibility.
Touch Targets:
Buttons should be at least 48x48px.
Keep interactive elements well spaced.
Avoid placing links too close together.
Google penalizes sites with poor mobile usability, so these details directly impact SEO and user satisfaction.
6. Tools for Testing Mobile Website Size
Optimizing your site is one thing—testing it across real devices is another. Luckily, there are plenty of tools available:
Recommended Tools:
Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test – Check usability and issues
PageSpeed Insights – Analyze speed and performance
Chrome DevTools (Device Mode) – Simulate various devices
BrowserStack / LambdaTest – Cross-device, cross-browser testing
Always test your site on multiple screen sizes, especially popular ones like 375x667 (iPhone X) and 414x896 (iPhone 11 Pro Max).
7. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Here are a few critical errors that hurt mobile website size and performance:
Using fixed pixel layouts that break on smaller screens
Neglecting to compress images and assets
Forgetting to include the viewport meta tag
Including large, unoptimized background videos
Overloading the page with third-party scripts or ads
A single oversized image or uncompressed JavaScript file can slow your site down dramatically. Regular audits are essential.
8. Why Mobile Website Size Impacts SEO
Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it evaluates your site based on its mobile version. A large, slow, or poorly laid out mobile site can:
Lower your search engine rankings
Increase bounce rates
Hurt conversion rates
Diminish user trust
By keeping your mobile website size lean and efficient, you ensure that users—and search engines—have a great experience.
Final Thoughts
In 2025, mobile traffic dominates the web, and your mobile website size can make or break your digital presence. From layout dimensions and page weight to touch-friendly design and speed optimization, each element plays a critical role in performance and usability.
Here’s a quick checklist to remember:
✅ Use responsive layouts with flexible grids ✅ Optimize images and reduce page file size ✅ Set the viewport meta tag correctly ✅ Ensure fonts and buttons are mobile-friendly ✅ Test performance and usability regularly
A well-optimized mobile website leads to better user engagement, higher conversions, and improved SEO—giving you a competitive advantage in today’s fast-paced digital world.

May I introduce Ellipsus!!!
(As many other people in the tags have said, but I'm going to take this as a general moment to pitch)
I'll do you one better than subscription based. Its accessible from multiple devices *while being completely free.* It also has very little lag between the devices! I have had it pulled up on my phone and computer at the same time, and typed into my computer to watch it show up on a few second delay in my phone!
Online saving indeed! (Also why/how it is accessible through multiple devices). Unfortunately, it does not have any offline mode available, but i have a secondary writing program I keep different ideas in for when I know my connection is going to be nonexistent/sketchy for a while.
It does have the option for folders in folders!! (I know cause I use them extensively lol). This is especially helpful when I'm trying to group together ideas that are connected, but may not need to all be in a single document together.
Because it is actually a website, it is available on both android and ios. They do have plans in the works to create a downloadable app, but as of currently I followed the steps on their website to have a pseudo app/home screen shortcut on my phone (though I do not know how well it would work on an apple product)
Now to address the preferences!
Like I said earlier!!! Completely free!!!! So there's no need to worry about a payment plan!
Unfortunately, it doesn't have any goals system at this point of time, though the ellipsus team is working on new updates all the time, so if enough crowd interest was built for it it might be something that could come into existence! (I circumvent this lack of goal/reminder by actually having a daily mode set in my phone to remind me to write). I would love some kind of word tracking capability at some point, but at the moment it's not an option.
Three. Different. Dark modes. I personally keep it in Nature mode (keeps my screen all cute and green ♡) but it also comes in Dark and Ultra Dark! (You can also change the fonts you write with!)
They do in fact have writing sprints!! Ellipsus will time *and* do the math for you on how many words you added during that time! I like to write with a friend of mine and we'll sync our sprint timers to go off at the same time, its really fun
And just another note that I love, they have a Collaboration system that makes it really easy to send off documents to Editors/Beta readers, as well as a comment and chat system so that direct communication can all happen on the program as well! 10/10 i love it so much for being able to share things with my Beta reader and get her feedback.
Anywho. I just really love Ellipsus. I do like 95% of all of my writing on it now and it has a lot of tools that positively impact my writing experience.
(Also you can export directly to Ao3)
Alright guys I NEED to get my writing off of google docs (fuckin ai sellouts) and into a proper writing app / website.
Anyone have good suggestions?
MUST list:
Must be subscription based so I can access it from multiple devices.
Must have online saving in case my device breaks.
Must have a decent filing system (I like to put folders inside folders if that makes sense)
Must be compatible with Apple products.
Preferences:
If there is a payment requirement I worked vastly prefer it to be a one time payment rather than a monthly or yearly subscription.
I would love for it to have ‘goals’ as one of the features. Especially if it can send me notifications and pester me to write on days I’ve chosen. Percentage tracking is great.
Dark mode works be lovely. Dyslexia bothers me less when I can adjust the ‘page’ color display.
Timers. I’d love if I can do writing sprints in-app.
Hit me with your top recs??
I appreciate you all!

How to Make Your Flutter App Responsive on All Devices
Introduction:
Creating a responsive Flutter app guarantees that it looks fantastic on all devices, including phones and tablets. This is achievable through the use of flexible layouts, adaptable design elements, and proper testing. Consider to hire Flutter developer to boost your app's responsiveness.
A few points are mentioned below:
Understand Device Diversity: Devices vary in shape and size, ranging from little cellphones to gigantic tablets. Your software should be able to adapt to any screen size easily. Flutter includes widgets and features to enable you to achieve this flexibility with minimal effort.
Use Flexible Layouts: Instead of set sizes and placements, utilize flexible layouts that adapt to the available screen space. Widgets such as Expanded and Flexible are useful for designing responsive designs. They enable your UI elements to extend or shrink based on screen size, ensuring a consistent experience across devices.
Responsive Text and Images: Text and graphics should gracefully scale to fit various screen sizes. Flutter provides widgets such as Text and Image with properties such as font size and fit to manage their size and scaling behavior. Make your text and images more responsive by using relative units such as percentages or MediaQuery.
Media Queries for Device Adaptability: Flutter includes a MediaQuery class that returns information about the device's size and orientation. You may use this information to make informed layout and design decisions for your app. For example, you can rearrange UI elements or adjust padding and margins depending on the device's screen size.
Testing Across Devices: To guarantee that your app appears well on all devices, test it on a variety of screen sizes and orientations. Flutter's built-in tools, such as the Flutter Analyzer and device emulators, make this process simple. Test your app on several devices to find any layout flaws and make the necessary changes.
Adaptive Widgets: Flutter includes adaptive widgets that change their appearance depending on the platform and screen size. For example, the ElevatedButton widget adjusts its style to meet the platform's design rules, resulting in a native look and feel on both iOS and Android smartphones. Using adaptive widgets allows your software to integrate perfectly with the user's device.
Avoid Hard-Coded Values: Hard-coded values for sizes and positions might cause layout differences between devices. Instead, express your layout in terms of relative units such as percentages, fractions, or the device's width and height. This strategy ensures that your software is responsive and adaptive to various screen sizes.
Feedback and Iteration: Solicit input from users and beta testers to uncover any usability concerns with certain devices. Iterate your design depending on the input to improve your app's overall responsiveness and user experience.
Conclusion:
Crafting a responsive Flutter app is possible by embracing flexible layouts, utilizing adaptive widgets, and testing across several devices. For additional assistance. At Aresourcepool Hire Flutter developer to ensure your app delivers a consistent experience across all screen sizes, increasing user happiness.

JT WhatsApp

Generally, we have all heard about WhatsApp, but discussing JT WhatsApp is a more exciting topic because not everyone knows about JT WhatsApp. So, in today’s topic, we will talk about JT WhatsApp and its benefits. We will discuss the features of this application and how to use it because when we talk about the versions of one similar application, you can find the Google Play Store. But you can still install it through APK files.
WhatsApp is the king of all social media applications and is most widely used worldwide. It is the first application of sending messages through the internet & changed the history of messaging. As before, we need to recharge our phones to send text messages & there are also limitations, like we can only send text. But WhatsApp improved the messaging experience, including various features.
After its popularity, the central need for WhatsApp is updates & results in WhatsApp MOD. Original WhatsApp takes longer to get updated with new features. In the meantime, a mod version of WhatsApp took place & launched with several new features. Yes, we are talking about the JT WhatsApp. You can also use to chat with Fancy Text through WhatsApp.
About JT WhatsApp –
JT WhatsApp is the mod version of WhatsApp & it has unlimited new features, including all the features on Old WhatsApp. These make the JT WhatsApp popular among all Android users. It is the most advanced application, the green WhatsApp, due to its unique and user-friendly functions.
As regular users, we need some features in Standard WhatsApp, such as the image sending limit being set to 30 only. Like this, too many common issues arise when we are in use. But JT WhatsApp has breached all the limits & shows you the power of its features. Once you download the JT WhatsApp, you will remember the user experience.
Features of JT WhatsApp –
It has all the same features as JT WhatsApp with an extended limit & too many new customized features that will captivate you. So, let’s dive into the parts of JT WhatsApp listed below.
Customization –
I get bored with the green theme in the original WA, but we have a solution to change the color from green to pink, red, yellow, or any other you like the most. That WhatsApp MOD can customize the theme with a different look. Besides the colors, you can also change the font style & size of the text, effectively making it look different.
Anti Deleted Messages –
Sometimes, friends try to prank you by sending some messages & deleting them instantly, but in green WhatsApp, it is impossible to read those deleted messages. JT WhatsApp will revoke the deleted messages & you can able to read them, but the sender still thinks you have not read them. Also, if you have sent a message and deleted it for everyone, the receiver will not be able to read it if they have the green WA.
Send Big Files –
You can send big files, like more than 25MB, the maximum limit in Original WA. So, you do not need to get support for any other application. That is a prevalent issue; when we send big images or video files, old WA will compress the file & impact the pixels.
But JT WhatsApp will send the image or video file in its original size & quality without impacting pixels. That is the most helpful feature of JT WhatsApp.
Text, Image & Video Status –
If you have a video of around 50 seconds & you want to post it on WhatsApp status, you should split it into two parts for a full 50-second video. JT WhatsApp has a solution for this as well. Yes, you can upload videos to 60 seconds in a single shot. Also, the text status limit is 256 characters, while in the green version, it is only 140. You can post it in green mode if you have Attitude Shayari with more than 140 characters.
Other Features –
Besides these, multiple features are also included in this WhatsApp, which might take a long time to get into Original WA. These are like –
Hide & Download Status – Hide or show status to your desired contact list. Original WhatsApp will not allow you to download the quality of others, but here, you can do that as well.
Activity Status – Hide online; last seen, typing status from others, either you are online or typing in their chat box. These help to hide your activity status from others.
JT WhatsApp Download & Installation –
To download any WA MOD, remember that the versions are not listed on the Google Play Store. Because all the MOD versions are not official, they are unavailable on the Apple Store or Google Play Store. The second option to download these applications is third-party websites, which allow you to download them for free.
These files are in .apk format to be used on Android Phones only. Your Android version should be 4.4 or higher to install the application from apkslink and You can download all APK files from apkslink.com .this is the process that how to install APK files for any application.

Video description: A Firefox user on an Android phone changing their AO3 site skin from Art Deco light mode to Purple Galaxy dark mode by changing their browser settings from light to dark. The video has no sound.
If you want to be able to use a light mode skin during the day and a dark mode skin at night, you can do that! I've figured it out for an Android phone, and it works with both Firefox and Chrome.
[if you change your browser settings to follow device theme, you can have this happen automatically, so that if your phone is light mode then AO3 is light and if your phone is dark mode then AO3 is dark]
If anyone out there has an iphone and can test it, please share your results in the notes!
Instructions under the cut:
To create exactly what I show in the video, you'll be making a total of 3 skins: 1) a light mode skin 2) a dark mode skin 3) a skin that combines those other two skins together
In the links above, you can get both the code for those skins and instructions for applying them on your account. Do that. When you're done:
Edit the light mode skin.
Scroll down to below the CSS box and find the word Advanced and tap the button labelled Show
In the new window that opens up, find the scrolling list called Choose @media and tick off the check box next to handheld and (prefers-color-scheme:light)
Update your site skin.
Do the same for your dark mode skin, but this time select (prefers-color-scheme:dark)
After making those changes to the skins, create a third site skin. You'll need to put some code into the CSS box, so here's a snippet that won't do anything:
#workskin p { font-size: 100%; }
It sets the font inside fics to 100% of whatever your device currently sets it at. If you want the font bigger, change the number to something more than 100. If you want it smaller, change it to a number smaller than 100.
The magic happens when you do this:
Scroll down to below the CSS box and find the word Advanced and tap the button called Show
In the new window, scroll past the media section you used before and find the button on the right labelled Add parent skin. Tap it.
type in the name of your light mode skin and select it
Tap Add parent skin again
type in the name of your dark mode skin and select it
Save your skin
Use your skin
Enjoy!
shoutout to @ao3skin who showed me how to do this for a tiktok video like 3 years ago and I only just remembered this was possible 🤣

Enabling large-scale health studies for the research community
Posted by Chintan Ghate, Software Engineer, and Diana Mincu, Research Engineer, Google Research
As consumer technologies like fitness trackers and mobile phones become more widely used for health-related data collection, so does the opportunity to leverage these data pathways to study and advance our understanding of medical conditions. We have previously touched upon how our work explores the use of this technology within the context of chronic diseases, in particular multiple sclerosis (MS). This effort leverages the FDA MyStudies platform, an open-source platform used to create clinical study apps, that makes it easier for anyone to run their own studies and collect good quality healthcare data, in a trusted and safe way.
Today, we describe the setup that we developed by expanding the FDA MyStudies platform and demonstrate how it can be used to set up a digital health study. We also present our exploratory research study created through this platform, called MS Signals, which consists of a symptom tracking app for MS patients. The goal for this app is twofold: 1) to ensure that the enhancements to the FDA MyStudies platform made for a more streamlined study creation experience; and 2) to understand how new data collection mechanisms can be used to revolutionize patients’ chronic disease management and tracking. We have open sourced our extension to the FDA MyStudies platform under the Apache 2.0 license to provide a resource for the community to build their own studies.
Extending the FDA MyStudies platform
The original FDA MyStudies platform allowed people to configure their own study apps, manage participants, and create separate iOS and Android apps. To simplify the study creation process and ensure increased study engagement, we made a number of accessibility changes. Some of the main improvements include: cross-platform (iOS and Android) app generation through the use of Flutter, an open source framework by Google for building multi-platform applications from a single codebase; a simplified setup, so that users can prototype their study quickly (under a day in most cases); and, most importantly, an emphasis on accessibility so that diverse patient’s voices are heard. The accessibility enhancements include changes to the underlying features of the platform and to the particular study design of the MS Signals study app.
Multi-platform support with rapid prototyping
We decided on the use of Flutter as it would be a single point that would generate both iOS and Android apps in one go, reducing the work required to support multiple platforms. Flutter also provides hot-reloading, which allows developers to build & preview features quickly. The design-system in the app takes advantage of this feature to provide a central point from which the branding & theme of the app can be changed to match the tone of a new study and previewed instantly. The demo environment in the app also utilizes this feature to allow developers to mock and preview questionnaires locally on their machines. In our experience this has been a huge time-saver in A/B testing the UX and the format and wording of questions live with clinicians.
System accessibility enhancements
To improve the accessibility of the platform for more users, we made several usability enhancements:
Light & dark theme support
Bold text & variable font-sizes
High-contrast mode
Improving user awareness of accessibility settings
Extended exposure to bright light themes can strain the eyes, so supporting dark theme features was necessary to make it easier to use the study app frequently. Some small or light text-elements are illegible to users with vision impairments, so we added 1) bold-text and support for larger font-sizes and 2) high-contrast color-schemes. To ensure that accessibility settings are easy to find, we placed an introductory one-time screen that was presented during the app’s first launch, which would directly take users to their system accessibility settings.
Study accessibility enhancements
To make the study itself easier to interact with and reduce cognitive overload, we made the following changes:
Clarified the onboarding process
Improved design for questionnaires
First, we clarified the on-boarding process by presenting users with a list of required steps when they first open the app in order to reduce confusion and participant drop-off.
The original questionnaire design in the app presented each question in a card format, which utilizes part of the screen for shadows and depth effects of the card. In many situations, this is a pleasant aesthetic, but in apps where accessibility is priority, these visual elements restrict the space available on the screen. Thus, when more accessible, larger font-sizes are used there are more frequent word breaks, which reduces readability. We fixed this simply by removing the card design elements and instead using the entire screen, allowing for better visuals with larger font-sizes.
The MS Signals prototype study
To test the usability of these changes, we used our redesigned platform to create a prototype study app called MS Signals, which uses surveys to gather information about a participant’s MS-related symptoms.

MS Studies app design
As a first step, before entering any study information, participants are asked to complete an eligibility and study comprehension questionnaire to ensure that they have read through the potentially lengthy terms of study participation. This might include, for example, questions like “In what country is the study available?” or “Can you withdraw from the study?” A section like this is common in most health studies, and it tends to be the first drop-off point for participants.
To minimize study drop-off at this early stage, we kept the eligibility test brief and reflected correct answers for the comprehension test back to the participants. This helps minimize the number of times a user may need to go through the initial eligibility questionnaire and ensures that the important aspects of the study protocol are made clear to them.
After successful enrollment, participants are taken to the main app view, which consists of three pages:
Activities: This page lists the questionnaires available to the participant and is where the majority of their time is spent. The questionnaires vary in frequency — some are one-time surveys created to gather medical history, while others are repeated daily, weekly or monthly, depending on the symptom or area they are exploring. For the one-time survey we provide a counter above each question to signal to users how far they have come and how many questions are left, similar to the questionnaire during the eligibility and comprehension step.
Dashboard: To ensure that participants get something back in return for the information they enter during a study, the Dashboard area presents a summary of their responses in graph or pie chart form. Participants could potentially show this data to their care provider as a summary of their condition over the last 6 months, an improvement over the traditional pen and paper methods that many employ today.
Resources: A set of useful links, help articles and common questions related to MS.
Questionnaire design
Since needing to frequently input data can lead to cognitive overload, participant drop off, and bad data quality, we reduced the burden in two ways:
We break down large questionnaires into smaller ones, resulting in 6 daily surveys, containing 3–5 questions each, where each question is multiple choice and related to a single symptom. This way we cover a total of 20 major symptoms, and present them in a similar way to how a clinician would ask these questions in an in-clinic setting.
We ensure previously entered information is readily available in the app, along with the time of the entry.
In designing the survey content, we collaborated closely with experienced clinicians and researchers to finalize the wording and layout. While studies in this field typically use the Likert scale to gather symptom information, we defined a more intuitive verbose scale to provide better experience for participants tracking their disease and the clinicians or researchers viewing the disease history. For example, in the case of vision issues, rather than asking participants to rate their symptoms on a scale from 1 to 10, we instead present a multiple choice question where we detail common vision problems that they may be experiencing.
This verbose scale helps patients track their symptoms more accurately by including context that helps them more clearly define their symptoms. This approach also allows researchers to answer questions that go beyond symptom correlation. For example, for vision issues, data collected using the verbose scale would reveal to researchers whether nystagmus is more prominent in patients with MS compared to double vision.

Focusing on accessibility
Mobile-based studies can often present additional challenges for participants with chronic conditions: the text can be hard to read, the color contrast could make it difficult to see certain bits of information, or it may be challenging to scroll through pages. This may result in participant drop off, which, in turn, could yield a biased dataset if the people who are experiencing more advanced forms of a disease are unable to provide data.
In order to prevent such issues, we include the following accessibility features:
Throughout, we employ color blind accessible color schemes. This includes improving the contrast between crucial text and important additional information, which might otherwise be presented in a smaller font and a faded text color.
We reduced the amount of movement required to access crucial controls by placing all buttons close to the bottom of the page and ensuring that pop-ups are controllable from the bottom part of the screen.
To test the accessibility of MS Signals, we collaborated with the National MS Society to recruit participants for a user experience study. For this, a call for participation was sent out by the Society to their members, and 9 respondents were asked to test out the various app flows. The majority indicated that they would like a better way than their current method to track their symptom data, that they considered MS Signals to be a unique and valuable tool that would enhance the accuracy of their symptom tracking, and that they would want to share the dashboard view with their healthcare providers.
Next steps
We want to encourage everyone to make use of the open source platform to start setting up and running their own studies. We are working on creating a set of standard study templates, which would incorporate what we learned from above, and we hope to release those soon.
