please define queerbaiting
Okay anon, not quite sure how you want me to define it but Iâll give it my best stab at it:
First and foremost, âqueerbatingâ is not a term that should be used to describe a piece of fiction (writing, tv show, movie, etc.) until the final product is completed and distributed.
Why, you may askâŚbecause as an audience we cannot guess where a story will go till it is finished. We donât know if the relationship will stay undefined. Or if theyâll âno homoâ the relationship by giving each a wife, for example. A piece of fiction cannot be considered queerbating and then have the definition revoked. It is an active practice to mislead in order to continually bait the queer community but never deliver the queer past the bait.
In broader terms, Oxford Dictionary defines it as:
The practice of incorporating apparently or potentially LGBTQ characters or relationships into a film, television show, etc., as a means of attracting or appealing to LGBTQ audiences, while remaining deliberately coy or ambiguous about the characters' sexuality; (more generally) the practice of trying to appeal to and capitalize on LGBTQ audiences or customers in a deceptive or superficial manner.
As it applies to Buddie and 9-1-1 (as I am assuming this is where the question was born):
9-1-1 as a show is NOT queerbating. From the beginning there have been queer characters whether single (Michael) or married (Hen and Karen). So using queerbating term to describe the show (already erroneous since it is not completed) would be false because the show has already establish it will have and deliver on its queer characters and in doing so, capture and keep a queer audience.
My thoughts on Buddie as it relates to queerbating under the cut cause this got super long.
Now for Buddie. Anon, Iâve been watching and following this show since Eddie got introduced and there is something the creators and TPTB of the show did, that was unlike anything before when it comes to queerbaiting in media (Sterek, Sherlock and Watson, Destiel, etc.): THEY HAVE BEEN SUPER CAREFUL TO NOT USE OLIVER AND RYAN TO PROMOTE THE SHOW BY EXPLOITING THE BUDDIE SHIP.
The moment this changed was the promo for season 6 (ET Interview) and then, promo for season 7 there was a drastic uptick with Oliver and Ryan (and Tim) talking openly about possibly being something but who knows? Purposefully vague, but it was addressed.
There are 4 exceptions that come to mind, that when viewed in context, I donât define as queerbating from Oliver and Ryan (and never will if Buddie is not canon):
1) Ryan names the Buddie ship (S2): he was a new actor on a fairly new show and audience engagement is important. Shipping is a part of TV and Ryan wouldâve been familiar with that. People from the get go loved their chemistry and they were being drawn up as friendly rivalry/challenge but Ryan got the ball rolling (I believe unintentionally). I donât think Buddie was written to be romantic from the get go.
2) Ryan and Oliver BTS lives (S2): again audience interaction and pairing the new guy with the most popular character is par for the course. There was nothing extra being pushed here imo.
3) Oliver 3x03 live watch: With 3x03, as much as Oliver loves Eddie and Bucks relationship he was (and is) the most careful to stay neutral in all his interviews. I think with this Buddifer scene, Oliver wanted to highlight the importance of Christopher and the tight bond they have, than it being romantic. At this point, Oliver already knew how Eddie would rely on Buck and how Buck would be unreachable through the first half of the season. I think it was Oliver just relishing in the dynamic they truly began here, which had more depth.
4) Ryanâs quarantine interview pre-S4: here, Ryan refers to Buck as a co-parent. This could be the most damming of all, but I think it served a purpose and you could call it queerbating but I think Ryan was vaguely in the know of where they wanted to take the Buddie story for S4, before TPTB stopped the full execution. Also, I think it was allowed to proceed because Ryan really put his foot in it during this time and pissed off a large group of fans, and him being allowed to talk about it was the trade off, although not sure if they expected him to go with âco-parentâ. After this, Ryan entered what we called âPR jailâ where he didnât really do many interviews - I donât think there were any after his shooting and maybe one for his PTSD arc in S5.
As far as the writing for the show and making queer insinuations: it was common practice in TV that when you have two single-ish attractive males on a show, you made insinuation to some type of homoeroticism for the laughs. Crude, I know, but itâs what was there. After season 2 however, they dialed that wayyyyy back and you could see a difference in how Buddie was talked about in the media, as in barely, if at all.
IMO in S2, when Eddie got introduced, it was not to intentionally point to a potential romantic relationship between the two down the line. Iâll breakdown my thoughts on each scene in S2 and why it may have been written that way (I am going off memory, if I miss any, let me know):
2x01 Whatta Man: even though itâs shot from Bucks point of view, I didnât see it as romantic at the time. I saw it as drawing a differentiation between Buck and Eddie. Here is Buck insecure in a place where he should be settled and Eddie who is confident in a place thatâs brand new. (Ryan having his shirt off is eye candy. Come on, those abs!)
2x04 this whole ass episode: Buck does what Buck is now known to do, he fixes. He followed up on his word of having Eddies back, and now we see it in action from beginning to end (not just driving Eddie to pick up Chris). Maddie referencing Buckâs âcrushâ is one of those things that is staple of TV for this type of male/male dynamic. Itâs all cute and Buck as a character is seen as capable and he has grown from who he was in S1. Stepping in the mess rather than escaping it (is the connection we see in hindsight).
2x10 Elf: taking Chris to see Santa is fully wrapped around the issues Eddie has with Shannon. So to me, not Buddie centric. Now for the Elf comment, we could see this as the first potential inkling of a seed, but I think less for Buddie, and more for Buck. One of the things done in TV when they are considering a pairing, storyline, new character trait, that could majorly change the way the show was supposed to go, you test it and see what the audience thinks. The majority of the audience, from what I remember, thought that it was cute and that Buck was possibly open to a male partner (even though he didnât know it) and some thought he was too nice to correct her. All of it was cute and you didnât hear any negatives. So, on we goâŚ
2x18 livestream chat: in this scene you see in the chat that some of the viewers say Buck and Eddie are hot and would make a cute couple. I saw this as engaging the part of the fandom that would pay attention to that and then put everything else that could go together to draw the conclusion that âyes they could be a cute a couple! I agree with this chat and the Elf!â See, this group of fans will take to the internet and make video edits, gifs, fan art, fanfiction, etc. and tell their friends and family to watch. I think here the writers had already done away with Shannon and Ali would also be gone, so if they would potentially lay the ground work to see if this could happen, it would start here and end with a hug and in season 3, it would begin with a hug.
Seems rather tame and slow burn in my opinion compared to other ships who could be accused of queerbaiting. Thereâs a depth to Buck and Eddies relationship Iâve only seen mirrored in het couples (Booth and Bones, Castle and Beckett, Lydia and Stiles (donât kill me for this)) but that could just be my bias.
So, I think in the break between Season 2 & 3 is when the team decided to lean into this dynamic and see how it plays out, but they came at it sideways which I think was the game changer in establishing Buddie as a real possibility. They built a family. Sexual attraction and romance (as we are used to) took a back seat in order to establish a bond that couldnât be broken. Their sexual orientation, as we know it, doesnât matter because this is how they want their family to look and now theyâll see that they are both open to keeping it to themselves and still have all the perks of the romance aspect of a relationship.
Anecdotally, Iâve always thought Taylor was brought back as a last ditch effort to make Buck have a partner that wasnât Eddie. See if it could work after they pulled the plug in season 4. But the audience did not love her (*cough* ghost stories *cough*) and that was then thrown out and realigned for 5b. Thereâs no actual proof of this, just my thoughts.
When it comes to Buddie, since season 3, theyâll put their foot on the gas and then back off. And theyâll do that about 4-5 times a season (give or take), but each time it builds off the last and continues to prove their devotion for one another. I believe season 5 was the last time they couldâve pulled it off successfully and still have had deniability on the queerbating from a big mass of the audience.
Bringing and keeping in Natalia and Marisol at the end of season 6, I think was a way to tie the majority of lose ends and leave the characters in good places for an end, in case the ABC buyout didnât happen. Then, I would say it was queerbating, because the show had ended and hadnât delivered on the full relationship they painted for Buddie.
The argument could be made that Buddie was used for publicity for the promo of S7 not because it would go canon but to capture a new audience with the network move, but I donât agree. The biggest audience surges Iâve seen, have been from 9-1-1 delivering on the Buddie relationship through actual canon: The Shooting/The Will, The Lightning Strike, Bi!Buck. It hasnât come from promo sorrounding Buddie.
Hope this helps! Sorry it got so long. Me, being concise? Never heard of her.

Simone de Rochefort shared the email she sent to Jim Bankoff, the CEO of Vox Media who sold Polygon, on bluesky. The text of the email is transcribed below:
"Hi Jim,
I'm writing to let you know how incredibly disappointed I am about the decision to sell Polygon to Valnet. Even though I'm one of the fortunate few to still be employed, I'm still furious and heartbroken.
I was in Europe when the sale went public. A few days later, a reader recognized me at a cafe in Paris. He couldn't believe what had happened, and asked me how it was possible, in the United States, that a workforce like ours could just be disposed of. He also added, completely unprompted, that American workers should "choose violence." I just thought I'd mention that! It was cool to be recognized halfway around the world for my work. The readers have always appreciated it, even if you don't. But I'm going to tell you about it anyway.
At Polygon, we wrote stories and made videos that were unique in entertainment media - they were weird and well-researched and funny. We also got awards for our reporting (including myself and my now-laid-off colleague Clayton Ashley - we were nominated for an ASME and we won a New York Videogame Critics Circle award).
We attracted brand sponsorships, some of which my team was in the middle of working on when my colleagues were laid off. My understanding is that Vox will be doing make-good sponsorships for the businesses that had contracted with Polygon. I wonder if they will seek out Vox Media again, once that process is finished.
My colleagues who were laid off spent years building connections and trust with sources in our industry. On the video team, subjects gave us hours of their time and resources for interviews. People trusted us to tell their stories. You can't do good journalism without that trust, and that's been at minimum bruised by this sale and the dismantling of the team.
Our readers and viewers are wonderful. I applied to work at Polygon because I read a comment chain on the site that I expected to be full of sexism and vitriol. Instead I found thoughtful people having a civil and intelligent discussion. What a rarity on the internet!
Did you know that Polygon's YouTube comments have always been overwhelmingly positive? My games journalist colleagues at other sites marveled at the fact that at Polygon, I never got hate mail. Was never harassed. That I could scroll freely through the comments of any video that I or my colleagues made and see people appreciating our work. That is so, so rare.
I worked at Vox Media for 9 years. The week before the sale, as I was preparing to go on vacation, I stayed up till 5 AM so that I could finish my next video. No one asked me to do that! That was frankly stupid, considering how little you and the company valued our work. This doesn't make me look very good or very smart, but I'm including it anyway.
The truth is I like working and the feeling of productivity, and I liked what I was making. I felt like that made it worth it.
It didn't! I suppose what I am saying is that Polygon's employees did everything possible to make the site a success. We built a profitable, respected publication.
You, and Vox Media's leadership, didn't know what to do with it. You failed to make a good thing work for you. That's quite sad, and quite an indictment on Vox Media as a whole.
I used to have a lot of faith in the company's longevity. I don't anymore, because of your poor decision-making, and your failure to listen to the people who were telling you what Polygon needed.
I had always said that Vox Media is an amazing employer. That out of all the media companies, it was the best. I encouraged people who are bright and hard-working and talented to apply for work there. I felt so lucky to have my job. I don't think you know yet how many bridges you've burned with people like me who would've jumped at the chance to work for you, and let themselves be exploited along the way.
A couple years ago, a former employee told me that digital media would never love me back, and that I should leave Vox. They said I wouldn't understand how much the company takes from its employees until I tried working somewhere else.
Well, now I work for Valnet! Thank you for the push out the door!
Meanwhile, if you couldn't make a profitable website like Polygon work, then what hope is there for my colleagues at other Vox outlets?
How many unprofitable ventures will be propped up with profits from the Polygon sale, and for how long? Before you and the folks with a head for business (or so I'm told!) have to hit the ledgers again and find something to sell, or someone to let go. Or will the company just enjoy a tax write-off for 2025 and then ⌠what?
Polygon was special, and it was valuable, and it was profitable, and you sold it, at a time when the economy was at a low point - and when Polygon, against all odds, was still making money.
This does not make sense to me. Please feel free to respond and convince me.
Sincerely, Simone de Rochefort"

"Two and a half years ago, when I was asked to help write the most authoritative report on climate change in the United States, I hesitated...
In the end, I said yes, but reluctantly. Frankly, I was sick of admonishing people about how bad things could get. Scientists have raised the alarm over and over again, and still the temperature rises. Extreme events like heat waves, floods and droughts are becoming more severe and frequent, exactly as we predicted they would. We were proved right. It didnât seem to matter.
Our report, which was released on Tuesday, contains more dire warnings. There are plenty of new reasons for despair. Thanks to recent scientific advances, we can now link climate change to specific extreme weather disasters, and we have a better understanding of how the feedback loops in the climate system can make warming even worse. We can also now more confidently forecast catastrophic outcomes if global emissions continue on their current trajectory.
But to me, the most surprising new finding in the Fifth National Climate Assessment is this: There has been genuine progress, too.
Iâm used to mind-boggling numbers, and there are many of them in this report. Human beings have put about 1.6 trillion tons of carbon in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution â more than the weight of every living thing on Earth combined. But as we wrote the report, I learned other, even more mind-boggling numbers. In the last decade, the cost of wind energy has declined by 70 percent and solar has declined 90 percent. Renewables now make up 80 percent of new electricity generation capacity. Our countryâs greenhouse gas emissions are falling, even as our G.D.P. and population grow.
In the report, we were tasked with projecting future climate change. We showed what the United States would look like if the world warms by 2 degrees Celsius. It wasnât a pretty picture: more heat waves, more uncomfortably hot nights, more downpours, more droughts. If greenhouse emissions continue to rise, we could reach that point in the next couple of decades. If they fall a little, maybe we can stave it off until the middle of the century. But our findings also offered a glimmer of hope: If emissions fall dramatically, as the report suggested they could, we may never reach 2 degrees Celsius at all.
For the first time in my career, I felt something strange: optimism.
And that simple realization was enough to convince me that releasing yet another climate report was worthwhile.
Something has changed in the United States, and not just the climate. State, local and tribal governments all around the country have begun to take action. Some politicians now actually campaign on climate change, instead of ignoring or lying about it. Congress passed federal climate legislation â something Iâd long regarded as impossible â in 2022 as we turned in the first draft.
[Note: She's talking about the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Act, which despite the names were the two biggest climate packages passed in US history. And their passage in mid 2022 was a big turning point: that's when, for the first time in decades, a lot of scientists started looking at the numbers - esp the ones that would come from the IRA's funding - and said "Wait, holy shit, we have an actual chance."]
And while the report stresses the urgency of limiting warming to prevent terrible risks, it has a new message, too: We can do this. We now know how to make the dramatic emissions cuts weâd need to limit warming, and itâs very possible to do this in a way thatâs sustainable, healthy and fair.
The conversation has moved on, and the role of scientists has changed. Weâre not just warning of danger anymore. Weâre showing the way to safety.
I was wrong about those previous reports: They did matter, after all. While climate scientists were warning the world of disaster, a small army of scientists, engineers, policymakers and others were getting to work. These first responders have helped move us toward our climate goals. Our warnings did their job.
To limit global warming, we need many more people to get on board... We need to reach those who havenât yet been moved by our warnings. Iâm not talking about the fossil fuel industry here; nor do I particularly care about winning over the small but noisy group of committed climate deniers. But I believe we can reach the many people whose eyes glaze over when they hear yet another dire warning or see another report like the one we just published.
The reason is that now, we have a better story to tell. The evidence is clear: Responding to climate change will not only create a better world for our children and grandchildren, but it will also make the world better for us right now.
Eliminating the sources of greenhouse gas emissions will make our air and water cleaner, our economy stronger and our quality of life better. It could save hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives across the country through air quality benefits alone. Using land more wisely can both limit climate change and protect biodiversity. Climate change most strongly affects communities that get a raw deal in our society: people with low incomes, people of color, children and the elderly. And climate action can be an opportunity to redress legacies of racism, neglect and injustice.
I could still tell you scary stories about a future ravaged by climate change, and theyâd be true, at least on the trajectory weâre currently on. But itâs also true that we have a once-in-human-history chance not only to prevent the worst effects but also to make the world better right now. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity. So I donât just want to talk about the problems anymore. I want to talk about the solutions. Consider this your last warning from me."

WARNINGS: flirting, typical marvel violence, sneaking around, yelena teasing reader, john walker, slight angst, fluff
WORD COUNT: 2.3k

AN: âĽď¸đ - im obssessed with thunderbolts, so of course the next bucky fic i wrote i used them instead of the ogs (sorry) but yippee bucky!!
âMorning.âÂ
You nuzzled your face further into his chest, the remnants of sleep curled deep into your bones. âIâm ignoring you.âÂ
His voice was scratchy, no doubt from the fact that heâd just woken up. âThe act of ignoring someone typically entails you not responding to them.âÂ
You scoffed. âAlpine, scratch your father for me.âÂ
His warm lips grazed your temple. âEver the romantic.âÂ
You peeked an eye open, admiring the man currently holding you. âThis isnât fair.âÂ
âWhatâs not fair, Doll?âÂ
âYou look perfect.â You glared, kissing his jaw lightly. âHow do you do it?âÂ
He smirked, clearly enjoying your praise. âJust ruggedly handsome, I guess.âÂ
âAnd humble too.â You laughed. âHow lucky am I?â The door stood as a constant reminder of the day, reminding you of your mission report that had yet to be finished. Whipping the comforter off of you, you ignored the way Buckyâs eyes bore into you. âStop looking at me like that.âÂ
âLike what?â He raised an eyebrow, knowing exactly what he was doing. âYou can't be mad at me for admiring the view.âÂ
âYouâre incorrigible, you know that, right?âÂ
âAnd youâre beautiful.â He frowned, petting Alpine haphazardly. âDo you have to go?âÂ
The thought of lying in bed all day, eating take-out, and watching TV was enticing. The thought of doing all of that with Bucky - well, that was heaven on Earth. You frowned, decided to stick with your original plan. âIâll be back tonight, you know I will.âÂ
âIâll help you with it.â He whined. âCâmon, Doll. Get back in bed.âÂ
âI know what your definition of âhelpâ is, James. Not today.â You crossed your arms. âYour seduction tactics wonât work.âÂ
âYe of little faith.âÂ
âYouâre much too confident, Barnes.âÂ
âHey!â He called out, stopping you in your tracks. His voice, which seconds ago was confident and cocky, now held a certain warmth he typically reserved for you. You or Alpine. âI love you.âÂ
You smiled, blowing a kiss as you grabbed the door handle. âI love you more.âÂ
The automatic lock clicked behind you, the silence of the tower pulling you back to reality. You sighed, deciding you would need a cup of coffee before attempting to finish the report.Â
âMorning.âÂ
âHi, Bob.â Youâd gotten too comfortable, too confident in your abilities. Turning around, you faced the music, trying to portray an air of indifference.Â
âYouâre up early.âÂ
âI am.â You fidgeted with the ring Bucky had given you, twirling it around your finger to distract from the larger issue at hand.Â
âYouâre normally not up until 9:30.â You normally found it endearing how Bob knew all of your schedules by heart. Today, you found it extremely irritating. Glancing over your shoulder, his eyes bulged at the name on the door, a look of realization etched on his face. âAre you and-âÂ
âBob-â Now fully panicking, you turned to your last ditch effort - begging for his silence. âDonât tell anyone, please.âÂ
âWhy-âÂ
âSwear it.âÂ
He halfway nodded and tilted his head, and you decided to take that as a win, scurrying down the hall. âSee you later, Bob.âÂ
âSure.âÂ
It wasnât meant to be a secret, you and Bucky.Â
Not at first.
Neither of you had tried to hide your affection for each other, itâs just that your team was oblivious to it.Â
That, or they had grown used to the constant touching and looks.Â
You couldnât tell.
Six months in, and you had yet to tell your team. The lines blurred quickly. At first, it had been a fit of passion, something to block out the horrible thoughts, a comfort for you both. Youâd been friends for so long, and one night, it just became too much, the tension, the silent pull between you. Then you started sleeping over, letting your walls down, and reminiscing on the past.Â
None of which, you reminded yourself, were things âfriends with benefitsâ did.Â
The mission that led to his confession felt like a lifetime ago. Youâd just gotten done fighting off the last of your assailants when he stalked over, wiping away the blood that dripped from your brow.Â
You smiled, leaning into his touch. âStop brooding.âÂ
âYouâre hurt.âÂ
You shook your head. âJust a scratch. Iâm fine.âÂ
He frowned, eyes fixed on the cut. âYou donât look fine.âÂ
âBuck-â He leaned his forehead against yours, breath catching as he spoke.Â
âI have to tell you something.âÂ
âWhat is it?â Your heart dropped, fearing the worst. âWere you hit?â You scanned his frame, eyes watering at the possibility of him being in pain. âAre you feeling alright-âÂ
âNever better.â He interrupted. âIâve been trying to find the right time to say this-âÂ
You laughed, your stomach twisting nervously. âDo you really think that a mission is the best-âÂ
His eyes darted toward your lips, cutting off your anxious rambling. âDollâŚâÂ
Your laugh drifted away with the wind, your thumb caressing his cheek. âYes, Buck?âÂ
âI love you.â
Your cheeks felt as if theyâd been lit on fire. You tilted your head, fully convinced you hadnât heard him correctly. âWhat-âÂ
âI love you.â He pulled you impossibly close, breath shaky as he spoke. âIâve loved you since you broke me out of Zemoâs trap. Since you stayed in Wakanda just in case I woke up. Since you helped me break the hold Hyrda had on me. I know this is sudden, and you probably donât-â He looked nervous, more nervous than you had ever seen him. âYou donât have to say it back, but I couldnât go any longer without-âÂ
âBucky-â Your eyes welled. âStop.âÂ
He groaned, squeezing his eyes shut. âI knew it was too soon, I knew I should have-â
Standing on your tiptoes, you kissed the corner of his mouth so lightly he could have sworn it never happened. âI love you, too.âÂ
His eyes shot open, and you basically cackled when he dove down, lips colliding messily against yours. âIâm never letting you go, Doll. I-âÂ
âAs much as I would love to continue this, we have a team of highly trained assassins after us.âÂ
He nodded, his smile remaining steadfast as he faced the door, reloading his pistol, enemy radio chatter echoing down the corridor. âWhat would I do without you?âÂ
Your worries of Bob tattling hadnât diminished, even after youâd finished your mission report. Poor punching bag, you thought as you slammed your fists repeatedly into it. It had been on the receiving end of many an angry superhero, and now, here you were, fulfilling the prophecy your predecessors had started.Â
âDoll?âÂ
Bucky.Â
You hadnât told him yet. Refusing to face him, you continued your relentless attack. âBarnes.âÂ
âEverything alright?âÂ
You nodded. âFine.âÂ
âWhat did the punching bag do to you?â You could picture his face now, an eyebrow raised, a lazy face gracing his handsome face.Â
âNothing. Just wanted to let off some steam.âÂ
âYeah?â You nodded, chills running up your spine as he stepped closer, his breath hitting your neck. âI can think of a few other ways to-âÂ
âAm I interrupting something?â Bucky jumped back, and you stopped, stepping around the bag to grab your water bottle.Â
âNot at all.â You shrugged, refusing to meet Buckyâs gaze. âBarnes was just leaving.âÂ
âI-â He nodded. âYeah, I was.âÂ
Yelena waited until the super soldier had left to speak again. âRough night?â
You shook your head. âNot particularly.âÂ
âOh?â She tilted her head, glancing at the still swinging bag. âIf that bag could talk-âÂ
âWhat do you want, Yelena?âÂ
âHave I hit a nerve?âÂ
You sighed, shoulders deflating. âNo, no. Itâs not you.â Sitting down on the bench, you stared at the ground. âJust tired.âÂ
âI thought you said you slept fine.âÂ
âI did.âÂ
You should have seen it coming, given Bob and Yelenaâs relationship. Yet, you remained oblivious until it had been too late. âAnd how did Bucky sleep?âÂ
âHe slept-â You slapped a hand over your mouth, staring at the widow. âBob.âÂ
The blonde nodded, laughing to herself. âIt was only a matter of time, you know.âÂ
âIâm gonna-âÂ
âDonât get mad at him.â Yelena scolded you. âYou knew he was going to tell me.âÂ
âI was just leaving Buckyâs room because- because I had a question.âÂ
âYou had a question?â She laughed. âAt 6:30 in the morning?âÂ
You nodded. This was a new low. âI did.â
âFor a super spy, you are a horrible liar.âÂ
âIâm not lying.â You wondered how convincing that was. Judging from the fact that Yelena still looked highly amused, you would say it had not worked. âIf that is the story you want to go withâŚâÂ
âItâs not a story.â You insisted. âItâs not a story.â
Yelena nodded, her constant smirk growing larger by the second. âYou said that.âÂ
"You look radiant in this light."
You fought the urge to kiss his cheek, opting for a quick nod as you stirred your pasta. âControl yourself.âÂ
He tilted his head. âWhat happened?âÂ
âWhat happened?â You shrugged. âIâm not following.âÂ
âHavenât looked at me all day.â His tone bordered on a whine. âDid I-âÂ
You shook your head. âJust tired, Buck.âÂ
He smiled, still nervously scanning your face. âYeah?âÂ
âYeah.âÂ
âThen can you look at me?â He leaned closer, whispering. âPlease?â
âFine.â You turned your head, glaring at your boyfriend. âHappy.âÂ
âImmensely.â He smiled, pushing a stray lock of hair out of your face.
âGuys, do you really have to do this whole lovey dovey routine where we eat?âÂ
You groaned, whipping your head toward Walker, who was loudly chewing an apple. âWhat lovey dovey routine?âÂ
Walker gestured between the two of you, laughing. âItâs cute that you think this was some sort of secret.âÂ
You looked back at Bucky, who had already been staring at you. âSay something.âÂ
He nodded slowly. âWalker, if you tell anyone-âÂ
âBucky!â You hissed.Â
âWhat?â His arms flailed. âWhat do you want me to do?âÂ
âUh oh.â Walker laughed to himself. âTrouble in paradise?âÂ
You both glared at the agent, yelling. âGet out!â
He raised his hands in surrender, leisurely leaving the kitchen island. âRelax, jeez.â
âAre you embarrassed of me?â Bucky practically spat out the words, like they were poison on his tongue.
âWhat?â You gasped, the air racing out of your lungs in record time. âOf course not-âÂ
âThen why do you care if they know?â He whispered.
âI thought you would-â You frowned. âIâm sorry. I thought since we hadnât told anyone, you would want it to be a secret.âÂ
He sighed. âWell Iâm sorry you thought that.âÂ
The air was thick, uncomfortable and tense. âAre we-â You gulped, hand itching to reach out and hold his. âAre we okay?âÂ
He shrugged. âNothing to not be okay about.âÂ
âBuckyâŚâ Your eyes were tearing up. âIâm not embarrassed by you, okay?âÂ
His eyes were trained on the tile floor. âI know.âÂ
âI donât think you do.â You whispered, setting the pasta spoon on the counter as you placed a gentle hand on his cheek. âPlease look at me.âÂ
âItâs fine if you are.â He muttered. âI would be-âÂ
âDonât you dare finish that sentence.â You hissed. âJames Buchanan Barnes, I am never, and will never, be ashamed to love you.â Your voice was firm, steady as you spoke. âNever say that again.âÂ
âDoll-âÂ
âJames.â You reached up, kissing his cheek. âI donât care if they know, I promise.âÂ
âTheyâre going to be relentless once they find out.â Bucky sighed. âMaybe we shouldnât tell them.â
You laughed. âIâm sure theyâll know by dinner time.âÂ
âWhy would they know by dinner time?âÂ
You winced, leaning your head on his chest. âI forgot to tell you.âÂ
âForgot to tell me?â He sounded thoroughly confused. âWhat happened?âÂ
âBob.â You whispered. âBob happened.âÂ
Dinner was odd, to say the least. Bob was staring at his plate, Yelena was staring at Bob, and Walker decided to watch all of you like it was his own personal reality show.
Alexei went on and on about his glory days with Captain America (which never existed) while you waited for the (figurative) bomb to drop.Â
Bucky just ate his steak and alfredo in peace, like the unbothered person he was.Â
Ava had been the first to address the tension, surprisingly enough. âSomething happened.âÂ
âHuh?â You tried your best to be nonchalant.
âSomething happened.â She repeated, looking around the table, settling her gaze on Bob. âWhat do you know?âÂ
âWhat?â Bob coughed, momentarily choking on his water. âWhy would I know anything-âÂ
Ava laughed. âYou havenât looked at anyone but Yelena for an hour, Bob.â
You sighed, looking over at Bucky. âWe should just tell them.âÂ
âAre you sure?â He reached out, placing a hand on your thigh. âWe donât have to-âÂ
âNo.â You smiled, placing your hand over his. âI want to.âÂ
âIs this about the two of you dating?â Avaâs voice cut through the chaos, effectively silencing the team.Â
âWhat?â Alexei yelled. âDating?âÂ
âYes.â You nodded, cheeks growing hotter by the second. âYes, weâre dating.âÂ
âFor how long?â Alexei sounded upset. âHow long have I been kept in the dark?âÂ
You winced, looking over at Bucky. âSix months.âÂ
âSix months?âÂ
Walker squeezed his eyes shut. âAlexei, please. Itâs not scream worth news.â
âI would say so!â The super soldier scoffed. âTrue love, it is rare. And these two-â His eyes watered. âLike a butterfly, you have-âÂ
âDad.â Yelena interrupted. âPlease.âÂ
You smiled gratefully at Yelena before addressing Ava. âHow long did you know?âÂ
âSince the beginning.â She shrugged. âI was phasing through walls, and I accidentally-âÂ
Your eyes grew wide, and Bucky coughed. âThatâs enough.âÂ
Bob smiled, leaning back in his chair. âIâm just glad I kept it a secret.âÂ
You glared. âYes, Bob. Great job not telling anyone.âÂ
âAnyone except âLena.â He nodded. âI tell her everything.âÂ
âWe know, Bob.â Bucky sighed, squeezing your hand. âWe know.âÂ

I LOVE what you wrote for the other ideas!!
This is kind of a dialogue prompt
Reader says something like, "do you know how many times I've imagined you fucking me on this desk?"
Maybe she's sitting on Bucky's lap while she works on a mission report or something for the team. Since Bucky hasn't seen reader in a bit, he is being needy and handsy trying to distract her. (Cue cockwarming?)
Eventually, reader slams the laptop shut and puts it away before she says that line. Bucky just like
Sweeps EVERYTHING off desk
(I'm so sorry for the long ask) much loveâ¤ď¸â¤ď¸
Not me answering this 2 years later but I'm weaaaak for the lip bite and this idea, immediate yes (and by immediate I mean I know I took forever, I'm so sorry, also I love you)
-
"I missed you so much baby" Bucky purred in your ear, hoisting you up by your hips to wrap your legs around his waist as soon as you stepped off the jet. You'd been gone for over a month in those 4 weeks, Bucky had been nothing but a pouty puppy, waiting for you to come back. None of the missions he went on were enough of a distraction, all he wanted was his perfect angel back in his arms and he finally had you.
"Missed you too, bub" You giggled at his scruffy beard tickling your neck as he nuzzled into your skin, carrying you off for some much needed cuddles. "I already showered and changed but I just have to finish my mission report and then I'm all yours"
You pecked the frown that made its way to his face, your thumb brushing over the crease between his brows.
"But I haven't seen you in so long" Bucky mumbled, reluctantly detouring away from your shared bedroom, taking you to the conference room instead.
"I promise I'll be quick-Bucky what are you-" You squeaked as you felt his cool arm effortlessly wrap around your waist, lifting you up so he could sit in the chair instead, plopping you onto his lap.
"I'll be patient" Bucky gave you an innocent shrug, not willing to wait for you to finish so he could spend time with you. You giggled at his clinginess, opening your laptop and pulling up the file you had to fill out; of course his patience lasts all of 10 seconds before his hands slowly slip under your shirt.
"Bucky, what are you doing"
"Nooothin'" he ignored the pointed look you gave him over your shoulder while he started to needily paw at your hips, slowly making his way up to your waist, caressing your skin. "Just feelin' you"
"I can see that" you shook your head, returning to your report, trying desperately to recall various details while your boyfriends hands continued to wander around. You could barely type out a sentence, squeaking when his cool metal fingers brushed near the top of your breast, tracing along the outline of your bra.
"Bucky"
"Y/n"
"You're distracting me"
"No, You're distracting me" He countered with another shrug, adjusting his hips, the movement causing you to shift right onto his-
"Bucky!"
"What" He gave you an innocent pout as if his thick erection wasn't about to pop out of his jeans.
"Your not so little friend there is about to stab my ass" You snoted, ignoring the way his hard length pressed against you made your stomach flip.
"Help him out then" Bucky smirked with a raise of his brow, "C'mon, it'll help me keep my hands to myself if he gets some attention"
"Bucky-
"Please baby, I promise I'll behave, just let me put it in you, I won't move, no more distractions, scouts honor"
"You're a little shit" You rolled your eyes, biting back a smirk as you got up to pull down your sweats while Bucky unbuttoned his jeans, pulling his cock out. He groaned as he swiped his thick cockhead through your folds, your slick already making a mess between your thighs.
"Looks like I wasn't the only distracted on, huh" He whispered against the shell of your head as he pressed inside, the both of you gasping at the feeling of him stretching you. He was careful to lower you slowly, inching his way until you were perfectly seated on his lap and entirely full of him. "Mpph, fuck you feel good baby, keep me nice and warm, that's it" He nipped on your earlobe while you took a moment to recompose, your tight walls fluttering against his shaft.
"I-have to finish this-" Your voice melted off into a moan, how were you going to get anything done, it had been so long since you'd felt your boyfriends fat cock absolutely rail you, making you cum and squirt till you nearly passed out, his length fucking your brains out until he was ready to fill you, his moans and grunts all just for you while his cock exploded with thick streams of cum that would drip out-
"You won't get anything done if you keep grinding on me princess" Bucky's strained, teasing voice broke you from your train of thought, not even realizing you'd been pushing your hips further back on him, trying to feel more. "You sure you gotta finish this right now?"
"Y-yes" You tried to fill out the next section, your eyes rolling back instead when Bucky adjusted himself, pushing himself till his tip kissed your cervix.
"You sure baby, I can make you feel really good"
"I-
"It's been so long angel, I need you, fuck, need you so bad" The neediness of his voice only set you off further, a gush of your arousal pooling out of you, getting the patch of curls at the base of his cock messy. It certainly wasn't missed by Bucky, his hands holding onto your hips so he could gently thrust his hips up just enough for you to feel the slightest movement. "Please baby, m'so hard, balls are fuckin' full, swear my cock's ready to burst there's so much cum for you-
All it took was you shutting your laptop for Bucky to swipe his arm and clear the table of its contents, bending you over the table while he was still deep inside you.
"Fuck, I needed this!" He growled, grabbing you hips and setting a brutal pace without warning, his head thrown back, the sounds of skin slapping on skin mixing with your moans.
"OH-FUCK-J-AMIE" You squealed feeling Bucky angle his hips to hit a spot that made a mess everywhere, your juices dripping onto his jeans, the material turning darker making him fuck you harder.
"That's it baby, make a mess on me, make a mess on my cock, give me what I've been missing so fuckin' bad"
You were nothing more than a babbling mess letting Bucky take what he needed, your legs nearly buckling from pleasure.
"Wanna see you" He pulled out and handled you with ease as he picked you up and placed you onto the table, throwing your pants off and tossing your legs over his shoulders. He didn't waste any time as he slipped in again, the both of you moaning and he started to move again, your tummy bulging each time he fucked into you. "Missed you so much angel, fuck you have no idea"
"Missed you-t-too" You hiccuped from a mixture of emotion and your building orgasm, a mix of everything making your vision blur with white spots and tears. "Missed you so much, Bucky"
"Cum for me angel, I want it, wanna feel my angel cum on my cock, please-" Bucky's pace stuttered as his cock squirted precum, his balls growing heavy, struggling to hold on, "m'gonna cum, can't hold it baby, give it to me"
"I-I-OH FUCK" You let out a silent scream as Bucky slipped his hand between your bodies, his thumb pressed onto your clit rubbing gentle circles. He continued to fuck you through your orgasm, his own ready to shoot from the base of his cock, the tip already dribbling-
"Good girl, good fuckin' girl, so pretty when you cum for me baby, fuck me I won't last, shit-I-FUCKK" The first burst of cum flooded and painted your walls, his cock throbbing so hard it nearly sent you into a second climax, "Hng, it's so much, mmph"
Bucky clung onto you with his face buried into your neck, shuddering as his body shook from the waves of his orgasm. He held onto you, keeping you wrapped up as he sat back on the chair, his lips pressing a kiss to your forehead.
"I love you"
"I love you too but I need to finish" You sleepily mumbled while Bucky shook his head, carrying you off for some much needed proper cuddles.
"You can finish later after we get some dinner in you and two more orgasms and a nice long shower, maybe a massage and THEN you can-"
"You filthy animals" Tony's voice cut through Bucky's list as he stood at the conference door with an amused smirk on his face.
"Oh my god" You kept your face buried in Bucky's neck, the oversized shirt you were wearing covering up what was going on but there was no mistaking what happened with Bucky's jeans around his ankles.
"Couldn't wait 10 minutes, huh"
"Would you?" Bucky didn't even bother arguing back, raising his brow with a smug smile.
"Can't argue with that" Tony nodded with approval, walking off while Bucky cackled without an ounce of shame.
"You little shit" You stayed pressed against his neck, while Bucky carried you off to your shared bedroom, plopping you onto the bed.
"Now about those two orgasms-"

could you write more for ambessa? thank you very much
Yes, General
Ambessa Merdarda x FemReader

Word count: 1.3k
Synopsis: You find yourself in General Merdardaâs bedroom, partaking in what she calls âtrainingâ.
Warnings: soft/hard!dom Ambessa, sub!reader, enforcer!reader, overstimulation, breath play, choking, wlw, Ambessa is just a lil mean, strap usage
A/n: youâre so real for this and yw!! I wrote this on my work break lol. I GO NUTS FOR THIS LADY LIKEEEE. I hope you guys like this tho lol! not proofread and a little rushed to be honest. But here we are. Also Sevika x Brothel!reader coming soon đ
â Move your hand.â
The command was surprisingly gentle but it was in direct contrast to the speed of her hips. Years of combat and taking over literal countries mustâve attributed to such stamina, youâd always thought. But you didnât hold much thoughts now, not when Ambessa was promoting you to avert the hand that currently pushed against her hip.
â bessaâŚâ You were breathless. â p-pleaseâŚâ
â Itâs General, soldier. Hurry now, move it. Your training isnât finished.â
This isnât exactly what youâd call training. But she clearly thought otherwise. If anything you shouldâve known the moment Rictus appeared in your stationed room, telling your commander something along the lines of â General needs herâ. Of course you were sent away without a hiccup, without so much as a â what on earth forâ. Nobody questioned the general.
You secretly regretted your release having been so smooth. Now you could barely feel your legs, for the first two hours they ached unbearably with all those the positions she forced you in. You moaned out a complaint to her about it at one point. Strong soldiers push through the pain, was all you received in return.
Ambessa grew impatient, deciding to move the shaky hand herself. She laced her fingers through it, holding it down against the bed as you wept. She was able to pick up her speed more freely now, quite viciously too. The stark black strap disappeared into you over and over.
You were countless orgasms in and she showed no signs of slowing down. Even now in your stomach you felt another threatening to surface. With tears in your eyes you took in the sight before you, Ambessa huffing and groaning, each of your thighs pooled around her. She was naked, her muscles flexing with each thrust, especially her stomach.
It glistened slightly, wet with you, under the ambient lighting of her bedroom. Her hair was pulled into a bun, a few strands loose and frizzy. You were fixing your lips to ask your General for a release when suddenly she pressed the entire weight of her chest on you, your stomach colliding with hers.
Ambessa slowed her thrust a bit in this position, deeper with its trajectory. Your pussy clenched around her harder, your legs wrapping around her instinctively. You grunted at her weight but appreciated it nonetheless, her warmth overheating your already scorched skin.
She kissed along your shoulders, drinking in your âhahâŚhahâŚhahâsâ flowing from your mouth. She got close to your ear, nipping at it and rejoicing in the reaction she pulled from your body. It reminded her of the way youâd hitch every time sheâd slap your ass.
â How are you feeling?â She whispered.
You pouted knowing it really meant to report your current standing. She smiled at you still trying to rip your hand from her grip, though now with the strong woman practically swallowing you that was impossible. Even more than before.
â feelingâŚtired, g-general.â
â And?â She prompted.
Good, you thought. So fucking good.
Silence met her, well if you consider whimpers and moans silent. Regardless you didnât answer, mind too caught up. Instead you closed your eyes, rocking your hips mindlessly against her.
This caused her to slow down even more, instead doing thrust that were deep and harsh, the harness burning against your skin. You yelped, your free hand gripping her bicep. She pulled back slightly, just enough to see your face, gripping your face. You opened your eyes now, weeping.
God, she loved this face. She loved everything about it, the way your skin flushed, your eyes fluttered closed, lips unable to close from all the noises you needed to let out. And donât get Ambessa started on the salty tears you always offered her. To her, this face was a testament to how good she fucked you. And you looked like this every single time she was inside of you.
â HeyâŚâ she cooed. â Stay with me.â
You nodded as best as you could, hoping to appease her.
She smiled down at you, her speed picking up now in what you assumed was a reward. Regardless of the reason, you considered it a reward with the way it sent another rush of pleasure through your stomach.
Deciding that you still werenât as alert as she needed you, she let go of your chin. Your head immediately sank into the bed, eyes threatening to turn white. Short lived though, before she finally released your hand. She immediately found use for it. She couldnât help but smile wilder seeing you already got your clit wet for her.
Ambessa thought you were going to combust with the sounds she pulled from you, she wouldnât have put it off so long if she knew youâd give her such a show. Your legs shook but found no other place to be but around her, toes a second away from curling.
â t-tâŚtoo muchââ
You attempted to give yourself relief, using your own hand to rip hers away. That didnât work of course, her fingers were big and calloused, much stronger than yours. All you earned was a glare, an especially threatening one. Cowardly, you moved it, letting your fingers tangle into the sheets.
Her face softened at this, pace speeding up again to that impossible speed. Sweat melted between the two of you as her breast and stomach pressed into yours.
You thought for a moment you heard a husky whispered âso messyâ. But you couldnât be sure, the plap plap plapâs were louder than whatever else echoed in the room.
Something was burning, aching, and it was growing harder to ignore.
â general! âmâŚgonna cum!â
â Thats good, Darling.â
Your orgasm didnât even get to hit you before her large brown hand was wrapped around your throat. Dizziness found you when she applied pressure, each finger squeezing into your neck. Instinctively you jerked slightly, using your hands to paw at it. It did absolutely nothing as you cried, throat tight and oxygen lowering.
â Go ahead, finish.â
Pouting, desperate nails scratching her knuckles, you finally let go. It felt like a freight train had hit your nerves, every part of you felt like it was on fire. You hadnât even felt it when you squirted, the only evidence being the stream of wetness down your ass and on Ambessa.
But she didnât let up, instead she lifted her head so she could look at you again, eyes locked. She kept her thrust up, pressing harder on your throat, you kicked slightly, your ankle hitting her back slightly.
She only smiled.
â Youâve got it, Darling. You can take it.â
Strength gone, your hands dropped, slump and mind gone. You felt like you were on the brink on unconsciousness, the line between being here and there blurred. But it never blurred the feeling over your orgasm being dragged out, cunt sensitive and weeping.
She nodded proudly at you, relishing in the way your body fought for both pleasure and air.
â Yes, juuust like that, thatâs a good girl.â
Your next orgasm wasnât as intense but it left your legs shaking, mind empty and a satisfied Ambessa. Once her hand was off your throat you coughed violently. She snuck a hand behind your back, rubbing it. Once you calmed she pulled out of you, effortlessly tossing the harness off.
Wordlessly she picked up your still limp body. You simply crumpled into her, tired beyond belief. She walked around her grand bed frame, laying you down on the left side. She was sure to out your head on the pillows gently. Gently she crouched down next to you, leveled.
You whispered a thank you to her and she returned that with small methodical peppered kisses on your sweaty skin.
â You did such a good job for me.â
You smiled weakly at her, wondering silently if you could be credited for anything. After all she had been the one doing most of it, just breaking you into two. But you decided that accepting the praise was better than pondering.
â you did too Ambessa.â
She opted to not correct you. She always thought Ambessa sounded better on your lips rather than general.
â Such a sweet girl you are.â

No Pain, No Gain â ljn
pairing. gym-rat!jeno x aider!reader genre. fluff, (kinda)friends-to-lovers, a dash of hurt/comfort, slice-of-life wc. 4.3k summary. Jenoâs well aware that he looks like an idiot in front of you, but what else could he do when just the sight of you makes him feel like a kid with a schoolboy crush?; or in which, Jenoâs been coming to your office with the tiniest of scratches just so he has an excuse to see you warnings. mentions of minor injuries (fake & real) and some bleeding (nothing super detailed but itâs still there), I sorta wrote this as if it were like a sitcom, cliche scenario an. clearing my wips! yet another fic set in the most random place u can possibly think of and itâs bc I (unhealthily) romanticize everything (Ă-Ă)âI started writing this during my gym rat (mouse?) era in 2023 but never finished it til now oops dk if its any good,,, enjoy!!

âI canât move my thumb.â
You use your finger to smooth down the sports tape over its first layer, gently grabbing the younger boyâs wrist to inspect your work, âThatâs the point, Chenle.âÂ
âHow am I supposed to play basketball with this,â Chenle pouts, bringing his taped thumb and wrist to show you as if you werenât the one who just did it. His posture grows worse at the realization of his small injury and now heâs slumped on the bed.Â
You sigh and repeat yourself, âThatâs the point. You need to rest it or else you can get an injury worse than this. I recommend maybe a week? But Iâm not a doctor.âÂ
You start cleaning your station up, fully expecting Chenle to understand and leave. But instead, he remains seated on the medical table, pouting. You know heâs trying to get you to change your mind, but seeing that he reported his wrist feeling tight and stiff, you know that itâs sprained and playing with it could make things worse.
âChenle, Iâm being serious,â you groan, âYou need to rest it or you canât play basketball for the rest of your life.â You were obviously exaggerating, raising your brows for even more emphasis. If he wonât listen to you by simply telling him, you might as well scare him into listening to you.
âRest of my life?â He frowns, looking down at wrist, âI⌠I guess a week doesnât seem too long⌠Thanks Y/N.âÂ
You smile, relieved that heâs choosing to listen to your advice, âIâll see you next week then?âÂ
He nods and gathers his duffel bag and his sweater, dragging himself out the door of the first aid room.Â
You turn away from the door, ready to busy yourself with some housekeeping items when you hear a knock at the door. Itâs quiet, and you almost think that you were imagining the sound, but when you turn to face the door, youâre met with the vibrant gaze of Lee Jeno, accompanied by a sheepish smile.Â
Ah⌠Lee Jenoâof course.
âAlmost thought you werenât going to show up today,â you joke, âWhat happened now?âÂ
To anyone unfamiliar with the two of you, it might come across as if you weren't exactly doing your job well, seemingly rushing through treatments even when faced with potentially serious injuries. However, the guy standing in the doorway right now has been delivering the most poorest excuses for injuries you've ever heard.
Sure, perhaps a couple of questionable 'injuries' wouldn't bother you much, because maybe the person was just overly cautious about their well-being. But when Jeno strolled into your office recently with the tiniest scratch on his left calf, you couldn't help but suspect that something was definitely up.Â
âI need ice,â Jeno side-steps into your office and pulls the corners of his lips higher on his cheeks, âPlease?âÂ
âNext time, just jog over to the nearby McDonaldâs and get ice there,â you say jokingly. This was his nth time in the past month asking for ice. You wonder if heâs just been using it to put into his water or if this dude just has some kink involving ice.Â
You only question Jenoâs recent tendency to visit your office because, ever since you started working at the gym, he's been a regular. Hell, his physique alone is proof to his long-standing commitment to the gym. It just doesn't add up that Jeno, with his apparent gym âseniorityâ, would be falling victim to injuries so frequently.
âHere you go,â you hand him a small, transparent bag that was partially filled with ice, âAnything else?âÂ
Jenoâs irises fall to the right corners of his eyes in brief thought, âMore⌠ice?â
You groan to conceal your amusement and move closer to Jeno, âGoodbye, Jeno. See you again another day!â You gently place your hands to his elbows, spinning him around and out your door. Â
âNo, wait Iââ
âSee you!â You wave, leaving Jeno no choice but to actually take his leave.Â
Your coworker Jaemin sees the interaction from the front counter, and seeing that there werenât any gym goers coming into the facility, he waves you over.Â
"Everything alright?" he asks, his gaze flicking briefly from the computer screen to you.
You glance at his screen and notice a game of minesweeper unfolding. Suppressing a snicker, you retort, "Yeah, same reason as last week." Swiftly, you click on an empty tile on his minesweeper grid, revealing the mine locations.
âIâm trying to help you and you do this,â Jaemin clicks his tongue against his teeth and diverts back to the situation, âItâs not in a creepy way, is it?âÂ
You give yourself a moment to think everything through, âIâm not sensing anything weird or creepy with it, if Iâm being honest. Heâs going about it⌠in a cute way?âÂ
Jaemin lets out a hysteric laugh and it echoes throughout the gym, âA cute way?âÂ
"There's no other way to put it," you casually shrug. Leaning against the desk, you absentmindedly flip through the management binders laid out before you.
Jaemin's brows knit, his curiosity piqued. "Cute, how?"
âI donât know.â Youâre lying. You know damn well what you meant.Â
Every time Jeno decides to pull one of his âstuntsâ, heâs at your door, eyes all glossy and resembling a hopeful puppy. And when you choose to pretend not to notice him, he doesn't hesitate to clear his throat (rather obnoxiously) or hum out a soft, "anyone home?" even though you're clearly rummaging in your cupboards for more supplies.
Jaemin reads right through your feigned innocence, eyes narrowing, âSure you donât.â
âWell, itâs not something I can explain,â you groan, âJust take my word for it.â
âOkay⌠cute⌠does that mean youâre enjoying all this?â Jaeminâs eyes wiggle your way and youâre glad that no oneâs around to see or hear this.Â
You scoff, âEnjoying what?âÂ
"Come on, Y/N. Let's not play naive," Jaemin smirks, "Jeno is practically inventing reasons to see you.â Jaemin pats your head like you would a child, which you dodge almost immediately, âWhich is honestly disappointing. A guy like Jeno could probably think of something way better but he resorted to something so basic.âÂ
You glare at Jaemin, your annoyance evident, âI hate that youâre probably right.â Because what else could the reason be? Jeno couldnât be that concerned for his well-being. And you distinctly recall questioning your other coworker, Xiaojun, about whether Jeno tends to show up frequently on your days off. His response? A shocking no.
âI always am,â Jaemin brushes non-existent dust off of his shoulder, âBut you didnât answer my question.â
âWhat question?â At times like these, you have the memory of a goldfish.
âIf you were enjoying it,â Jaemin clarifies, "You did call it cute, and cute usually equals enjoyment."
There were a couple ways you could go about Jaeminâs question. Was he asking if you were reciprocating this attraction Jeno seemingly had for you? Or maybe he wanted to know if you found amusement in the ongoing situation?
Regardless, your cheeks betray you by warming at the question and the thought of your answer sliding off the tip of your tongue.
âIâd be lying if I said no.â
â
Itâs no surprise when Jeno shows up to your office two days later with the same smile plastered on his face.Â
Heâs standing right outside of your office, waiting for you to welcome him in. When you do, he enters the room slowly, greeting you as he moves toward the medical bed situated at the far corner and away from the entrance.Â
Jeno watches as you rake through a pile of disorganized supplies, âHow are you?â You werenât in search of anything specific, but you were trying to busy yourself now that Jeno was in the room with no clear purpose.Â
âI'm all right," you reply casually, your voice calm. "You?â You quickly glance up at him and almost crumble to your knees. Today, Jeno is sporting a black muscle tee and grey sweatshorts, and though you've never really taken notice of his outfits before, you secretly (and shamefully) remind yourself to start doing so.Â
âIâm okay,â Jeno hums, âI was wondering if I could get a heat pack?âÂ
You take a good look at him and narrow your eyes, âIt doesnât look like you need one.â But regardless, you make your way toward the heat packs sitting in a cupboard by the fridge. You simply wanted to hear what his reason was this time.Â
âMy quads are really stiff today,â Jeno replies, subtly gesturing to his legs, âI could barely get through leg day with them.âÂ
âWell, this should work,â you say. You pop the pack and wrap a towel around it, âThere you go. See you!âÂ
âCan I stay here for a bit?â You donât see the way Jeno pouts. Youâre too busy making your way to your box full of miscellaneous things. He presses the pack against the upper side of his thigh, remaining seated on the bed, âIâll leave when the heat pack is finished.âÂ
Jaeminâs voice echoes in your head, "Jeno is practically inventing reasons to see you.â And you can now see that it was painfully obvious.Â
âOf course,â you say, âTake as long as you need.âÂ
You move on to organizing the supplies, trying your best not to mind the pair of eyes that were burning holes into the side of your head.Â
âSoâŚâ Jeno starts, âHow was your weekend?âÂ
âYou donât need to make small talk you know,â you say, pulling out three pairs of medical scissors, âYou could take a nap or something.â With your back turned to him, you go to put the tools away, âI donât mind.â
Jeno swings his legs in the air and slumps, âYeah, but Iâuhâdo want to make small talk.â Heâs half-assedly holding the heat pack to the side of his thigh, growing annoyed that it wasnât staying in a specific place. He resorts to pinning it under his thigh.Â
âWhich I also donât mind,â you say, biting back a smile, âMy weekend was okay⌠stayed home and relaxed. Nothing super special. You?âÂ
You stop and turn to look at him, keeping your eyes trained on the man who was now leaning back against the wall. The position looks uncomfortable, yet Jeno appears to be content.Â
âSimilar to yours,â he replies, âExcept Hyuck forced me to play a few games online with him. It was fun, actually! But donât tell him that.âÂ
You let out a snort. Youâre familiar with Donghyuck, recalling how he and Jeno had made a deal that if Jeno managed to bring him to the gym for a few workouts, then he had to play some of his PC games in return.Â
âHowâs he doing anyways?â You question, âI havenât seen him in a while.âÂ
Jenoâs brows furrow for a sliver of a second before they sit back to where they had originally been, âLast leg day killed him, so heâs given up until he recovers.âÂ
âAh,â you giggle, âCanât keep up with you, Iâm guessing?âÂ
Jeno shakes his head, bangs creating a blanket over his eyes. He sweeps them aside, âNot really. I donât really go hard on leg days. Iâm more of a back and biceps type of person.âÂ
Your eyes defy you as they scan Jenoâs arms. You blame him. His statement was practically an invitation to look at his upper limbs as if you needed some kind of evidence, âI believe you.â It comes out a lot more flirty than you intended and you want to sprint out of the room before you make one more wrong move.Â
âO-oh,â Jeno stammers. It was a sight seeing Jeno grow shy, using his hands to hide arms. And although he was hoping to conceal them, the man forgets that doing so only means he had to flex his arms, âThanks?âÂ
Youâre not sure how to reply, resorting to rummaging through the same box. You find some empty rolls of tape and you toss them in the trash. How do you even go about this conversation? Say âyouâre welcomeâ? Weird. Ask him about his routine? No, it wasnât like you were looking into building your arms. Ask if you could feel his arms?Â
Shut up, brain, be fucking for real right now.
âY/N?âÂ
âHm?â You look up and Jenoâs looking back at you expectedly.
âSorry, I zoned out a little there,â you sheepishly confess, playing with one of the boxâs flaps, âDid you say something?âÂ
âI⌠uh, nevermind, it doesnât matter,â Jeno clears his throat, âIt was just aboutâumâsomething. But it can wait another day.â He smiles and it just about reaches his eyes.Â
âWait, no, tell me,â you frown.Â
âItâsâŚâ Jenoâs eyes flicker back and forth, contemplating if he really should go through with his question. He wants toâhe really doesâbut his words fail him, teeth biting at his bottom lip.Â
âItâs really nothing, ha-ha!â You watch as his gaze drops to the heat pack suffocating underneath his thigh. He uses the back of his hand to feel it. Itâs still very warm, but regardless, he uses it as an excuse. âIâll just take my leave⌠Um, I guess Iâll see you around?â Jeno slips off the bed, tossing the pack into the trash before he moves past you.Â
âWait, JenoâŚâ You make another attempt to stop him, guilt slowly creeping up on you, curiosity accompanying it because you shouldâve been listening.Â
For once, you wished he stayed just a bit longer.Â
â
Itâs been almost a week and a half since Jeno last visited your office.Â
But whoâs counting?
You check once, twice, thrice over your shoulder for Jaeminâs presence, nodding to yourself when youâre sure that your coworker wasnât there to see the down-bad bullshit you were about to pull.Â
Pulling up the gymâs database, you quickly type Jenoâs name into the search bar. While it loads, which feels so so painfully long, your fingers tap against the edge of the desk. You canât believe youâre doing this.
âHm.âÂ
Once Jenoâs profile finally appears on the screen, you follow his row to the Date Last Active column, seeing that he was at the gym this morning, two hours before your shift.Â
A low whistle knocks you out of your trance and you jump, almost knocking the keyboard off the desktop.Â
âFucking hell, Jaemin!â You swing at his shoulder at a strength you knew damn well he wouldnât even feel, âYou think youâre funny sneaking up on me like that?âÂ
âYes,â Jaemin shrugs, âMisusing the database I seeâŚâ His eyes narrow at you, brow raising. Then, he smirks and pokes at your rib, âStalking your boyfriend.â
âShut up,â you quickly exit the application and pull up Jaeminâs minesweeper game, âHeâs not my boyfriend⌠Acting like you donât do the same shit with other gym goersâŚâÂ
âI donât see why you canât just walk up to him and talk to him,â Jaemin sighs, âHeâs still here, you know.âÂ
âHe is?âÂ
âAwww your eyes lit up!â Jaemin teases, diabolically sticking a finger in your face.Â
You threaten him again, which Jaemin completely disregards out of spite.
âBut tell me why heâs been coming to the gym more often when youâre not here,â Jaemin, like you, was quite familiar with Jenoâs routines, âDid you do something that would force the poor guy to change his routine all of a sudden? Sometimes he wakes up at ass oâclock to get his workout done.â
Your mind reels back to your last interaction. Playing back each and every second and overanalyzing each and every word that left your mouth that afternoon. Yeah, you probably did but you donât want to think that youâve scared Jeno away.Â
âI donât think so?âÂ
ââI donât think so?ââ Jaemin mocks, âWriting âliarâ on your forehead would be more subtle than whatever the hell that was.â He pauses his game and decides to fix all his attention onto you, âNow spill.â
âI really donât know, okay?â you groan, âLast time I spoke to him, I zoned out and I missed what he was saying and then he left and he didnât even choose to repeat it or anything.âÂ
Jaemin narrows his eyes at you, almost as if heâs lost all hope in his very good friend and coworker, âY/N, did you not just graduate with a masterâs?âÂ
Your brows meet, âHuh? What do you mean?â
He mutters a dumbass under his breath, which completely flies past your head. âNothing.â Jaemin smirks subtly, turning away to leave in hopes that you donât ask any further questions.
âWhere do you think youâre going?âÂ
Jaemin gets flashbacks to his mom, âUhhhhhhh, there?â The man points to nowhere in particular before taking off.Â
âNa Jaemin!â You call out. Your voice echoes through the gym and you groan, slumping against the desk before accepting defeatâbecause what did Jaemin mean? Was he calling you stupid or something?
Not even five minutes pass when you hear Jaeminâs voice boom over the speakers, âY/N, youâre needed in your office. Y/N, youâre needed in your office.âÂ
You look over to Jaeminâs office and shoot him a look that could kill. And again, Jaemin ignores your threat, grinning menacingly before he waves cause he knows heâs pissing you off. Youâve never grown used to this manâs attitude, but it doesnât mean you donât adore it.Â
Logging off the computer, you let out a huff and pad your way past the exercise machines and into your office. And from all that you were expecting, you sure as hell werenât expecting to find a very worn out Jeno, the hem of his tank sprinkled in faint drops of blood.Â
âJeno?â You donât even try to mask your worry, fast-walking straight to him before you guide (practically tugging) him to the medical bed, âWhat happened? Are you okay?âÂ
An annoying and almost spiteful grin shyly appears on Jenoâs lips before he turns his palms up for you to see. His hands were covered in blisters, some popped and others brand new. They looked extremely painful to even look at.
âFuck,â you mutter, âDidnât I say not to overwork yourself that one time?â You turn your back to Jeno and begin gathering all the supplies you need to treat his blisters. Youâre rambling under your breath, words unrecognizable from where youâve sat Jeno down.Â
Your heartâs beating out of your chest, mostly because this is the first time youâve seen Jeno in a while. But to add his injuries on top of that? Youâre certainly not sure how youâre keeping composure.Â
Meanwhile, Jeno really canât do much but watch you move from one corner of the room to the other. He wants to get up and help, but by the way an eleven forms in between your brows, heâs reluctant to even say anything.Â
Itâs funny because despite how aggressive youâre handling all the supplies, the second you make contact with his wrist, your demeanor changes, suddenly shifting to be more gentler. You hold his hands as if you were holding a newborn, delicately rotating them to understand what had to be treated.
âIf it hurts, tell me,â you say quietly, âActually donât. Iâm mad at you right now.âÂ
Jenoâs head tilts to the side like a confused puppy. Then he finally says, âMad at me?âÂ
âYes,â you grab a sheet of gauze and begin wiping away at Jenoâs palm, dabbing carefully when it comes to the blisters, âIâm mad at you.â
âWhy?âÂ
âThis is why you need a break.â You ignore his question, grab new gauze and continue wiping away the new and old blood thatâs accumulated in his palms. âJeno, I know you like it here, but your body needs rest, too.âÂ
A response sits at the tip of Jenoâs tongue and heâs not sure whether or not he should tell you. The last time he decided to take a step out of his comfort zone, you didnât even hear him.Â
Does he want to try that again?Â
You spray his palms with disinfectant before applying some ointment to help them heal faster. At this point, you hadnât done as much as looked up to make eye contact with the man.Â
âBut..â Big step. âBut this is the only place that I get to see you.â
What the fuck?Â
You hope Jeno doesnât notice the way you freeze for a burning second before you try to play it off by grabbing long bandages. Itâs a good thing he canât see the way your heart is beating erraticallyâand youâre hoping he doesnât hear it, too.Â
âYou can literally see me wherever you want if you just asked,â you say nonchalantly, voice quiet, âBut instead you resort toâŚâ You stop yourself from speaking any further, unsure if you would even want Jeno knowing that you had suspicions of him pulling fake injuries out of his ass to make excuses to see you.Â
âIâm not even sure if youâd even agree to it,â Jeno confesses, âI like⌠I really like talking to you butââÂ
âBut what?â You slowly begin wrapping the bandage around his wrist, making your way up to his palm.Â
Jeno canât help but whisper, âYou donât seem to like me as much as I wished.âÂ
You hold back a giggle. Jenoâs always so accidentally cute and he doesnât even know it. Itâs literally pissing you off that a man youâre fake-mad at is doing absolutely nothing to earn your affection, yet here he was, doing just that. âYou donât know that.â
âI do know that,â Jeno counters.Â
âNo, you donât,â you ping-pong back. The bandage crosses between his fingers and you manage to finish wrapping the bandage around his palm.Â
âI do.â
âDid you ask me?â You gulp, because at this point youâre afraid where this conversation was going.Â
âWell, do you like me?âÂ
You move onto his other hand, grabbing another roll of the long bandage. You could feel the atmosphere in the room begin to shift and now youâre beginning to sweat in your light sweater.Â
âI do.âÂ
Jeno clears his throat, âIn the way I like you?â You groan. Of course heâd say that. It was a valid follow up question, simply because your answer could very much cover that broad spectrum of like.Â
You ask, âHow do you like me?âÂ
Jeno takes a moment to think about his answer, watching as you start replicating your work from his other hand, âI honestly⌠think itâs obvious how I like you.â âMmm,â you hum. At this point youâre teasing him on purpose, âHow so?âÂ
âI make myself look like a fool when it comes to you,â Jeno huffs, âIce? Heat packs? Who am I kiddingâŚâ Jeno scoots back in his seat and you follow, practically falling between his knees from the way heâs sitting. âEvery time I come here looking for you, thatâs when I gain the confidence to finally ask you out⌠well not always out but maybe for your number or just simply talk to you or something. I wanted to be friends and then more if it went wellâŚâÂ
Your movements slow, attention failing to even do a decent job at bandaging.Â
âBut, when I finally reach this room and see you? Itâs like I lose all that confidence and itâs stuffed in the bag with the ice you give me,â Jeno explains. âIâm even lucky enough that I can finish my sentences around youâŚâ
You blink at his injured palm and the realization dawns on you. So this was what Jaemin was hinting at, âAnd that last time⌠you asked me out andââ
âAnd you didnât hear me,â Jeno finishes, âAnd I couldnât for the life of me repeat what I asked because my confidence plummeted and then the fear of rejection kicked in.âÂ
Your hands have since halted, cradling Jenoâs hand as you try to calculate your next move. Itâs now clear as day that Jeno has feelings for you, and youâve slowly been coming to terms with yourself that you care a little too much about Jeno than a normal person should.Â
âAsk me now.â
âWhat?â Jeno practically jumps, startled and confused.Â
You drop the bandage roll and lightly tighten your grip around his hand. Looking up, you find that Jenoâs gaze has already been sitting and waiting for your own to meet his. You clarify, âAsk me what you asked then, now. This time, Iâm listening.â
The reassurance from you lifts some weight off of Jenoâs shoulders, ones he didnât know even existed. Then, he fixes his composure, moistens his lips and finally says, âWould youâumâlike to go out for dinner with me?â
âMy answer then and now are the same,â you smile down at your feet, suddenly feeling shy under his gaze, âI would really love to.â
Eyebrows reaching for his hairline, Jenoâs eyes widened, âWait, really?âÂ
âReally,â You nod. And although you try to look anywhere else in the room, Jenoâs eyes capture your eyes once again, holding them there for a few skips of your heartbeat.Â
You clear your throat and let out a breathy laugh, âHaha so um⌠let me justââ You hastily pick up the bandage roll and return to your work.Â
It doesnât take much longer before you finish, concealing and protecting his injuries under the bandages. âNow that youâve got me, promise me you wonât overwork yourself like this?âÂ
âIâve⌠got you?â Jenoâs cheeks heat up at your choice of words, the shift between the both of you being so evident now that heâs experiencing a weird case of whiplash.Â
âShut up,â you mumble, âJust promise me. I donât wanna have to keep worrying about you getting hurt.âÂ
Jeno laughs, completely enamoured at your own flustered state.Â
âYeah, yeah⌠I promise.âÂ

Dr. Zayne will handle it.
Pairings: Zayne x afab! Reader
Summary: Zayne finds out your gyno appointment is going to be with a male doctor and heâs less than happy about it.
Warnings: not really any just Zayne being jealous yet respectful, idk if I wrote him ooc or not⌠but itâs a learning experience lol.
Ps- itâs a lil shorter than what I normally write but I have so many ideas brewing.
ââââ
Zayneâs fingers type quickly on his laptop, a warm cup of tea steeping next to him. His glasses are perched on the bridge of his nose with the lenses reflecting reports and patient files. He had promised only an hour of working in his home office while you stayed with him.
He could hear your voice in the main room arguing with whomever you spoke with. After your tone sharpened slightly, he decided to close his computer, remove his glasses, and see what was happening.
âNo, Iâve been waiting for this appointment for two months! There has to be something else you can do.â You plead with frustration.
Zayne raises a brow, wondering what kind of appointment has you so stirred up. He watches as you angrily huff and say goodbye before ending the call. Your phone is tossed to the couch carelessly and you rub your face in your hands.
He carefully comes up behind you, his large hands covering your shoulders and the pads of his thumbs gently massage the tissue.
âIs everything okay, dear?â Concern is evident in his voice.
You nod and turn around to face him. âYeah, just my stupid gynecologist.â
Zayne remains quiet, obviously waiting for you to continue.
âIâve been trying to see this specific doctor because the association recommended her, but they just called me and said they overbooked her for this month and she won't be able to see me."
âWhy does the association even have a recommended gynecologist?â
His questions hung in the air for a few moments while you scooped up your phone from the couch.
âI guess Dr. Lina is the best in her field. Kinda like how youâre the best cardiologist- most hunters try to see you instead of anyone else for heart issues. I guess itâs the same for her, and since a lot of hunters are women, the association trusts her to handle any issues for us.â
Zayne hums in understanding and places a tender kiss on your temple, his hand stroking your back to relax you. âSo, what are you required to do now?â
You let out a sigh, âThey can either reschedule me a month from my original appointment or I have to see the other gynecologist that the association recommended⌠whoâs a guy.â
He tenses up and his hand stops moving.
Zayne maintained a high level of professionalism in his interactions with female patients. He recognized that the primary objective of doctors, including himself, is to assist individuals in need. Nevertheless, he experienced a sense of jealousy at the chance of another man observing you in a vulnerable situation.
âAnd are you comfortable with that?â His voice grows more cold and tense.
You pull your lip that you were chewing on from between your teeth, âNot really⌠thatâs why I was waiting for Dr. Lina. If Iâm not cleared soon, then Iâll have to be put on desk duty until I am.â
The foreboding future of being limited to desk duty when you weren't even physically injured was sure to make you go crazy. It was one of the most frustrating things about being a hunter- forget the wanderers, no, it was staying on top of all the appointments to ensure you were completely healthy. Dental appointments, eye exams, physicals, and now gynecology.
âIâll miss my deadline if I wait for her,â frowning, you collapse onto the sofa in defeat. âHello desk duty for the next month.â
You glance up at Zayne, searching for a hint of his thoughts on the situation, but he simply exhales through his nose, a silent acknowledgment of your frustration. He settles beside you, and you allow yourself to rest against his chest, feeling the cool steadiness of him. As you roll your eyes at the absurdity of it all, you pull out your phone to dial the clinic once more. Unbeknownst to you, Zayneâs gaze is intently fixed on the screen, curiosity dancing in his eyes.
âIâll just book with that other doctor,â you say dejectedly.
Zayne's hand clamps down on your wrist with a surprising intensity, preventing you from dialing the number. Shock floods your senses, and as your gaze meets his, you can't help but notice the piercing coldness in his green eyes. The tension in the air thickens, making it clear that this moment is more weighted than you had anticipated.
âZayne?â
You look back to his hand locked onto your wrist. Little white snowflakes flurry from his arm, and from that, you can tell the doctor is having an internal battle with his emotions.
âForgive me for my impracticality, but I donât think Iâm comfortable with you seeing a male gynecologist.â You donât fail to notice the way his voice was now lowered and a chill ran through your body.
The flurry of snowflakes burst from his hand in quicker movements at your words and he quickly lets go of you.
âMy, my, is Dr. Zayne⌠jealous?â
âI donât see why I cannot clear you for this, I am your primary doctor after all.â
Aww, your snowman was jealous. He just didnât want to admit it.
âZayne, honey,â you lock your fingers with his, noting the way the snowflakes start to calm down. âAs much as I would prefer you to do it over anyone else, the association wants someone specialized in that field.â
Zayne furrows his brow, a wave of frustration washing over him. He knows deep down that he lacks the authority to grant you the necessary clearance, and the thought that another man will see you exposed, no matter how justified it may be for medical reasons, angers him even more. The tension in the room thickens as he rises abruptly from the sofa, his movements are almost forceful as he unintentionally nudges you aside in his haste, caught between concern for your well-being and the turmoil within himself.
âDonât make the appointment.â
And with that, he leaves the room.
"Zayne!" You call out, but the sound of his office door shutting was all you received in response.
âââââ-
About an hour ticks by and you never leave the couch, instead just opting to watch some soap opera to pass the time with a throw blanket covering your body as the rain pelts against the windows.
You could faintly hear Zayne's muffled voice speaking to someone over the phone. You didn't want to disturb him, understanding how difficult it is for him to express his emotions. If he needed some time alone, you would give him that space.
By the time the door opens, the main character is already in tears again for the umpteenth time. He stands over you and you turn off the show.
In the stillness, you can sense his struggle to meet your gaze, while your eyes remain locked on his, filled with concern and curiousness.
Finally, he clears his throat.
âYou have an appointment with Dr. Lina at 8 a.m. on Monday. Please do not be late.â
Shock washes over your features and your mouth parts open.
âWhat? Zayne, how did you-â
âBeing at the top of your field has its advantages.â
You're silent, not knowing what to say, just overall confused. It wouldâve taken you another month to see her and now youâre seeing her in three days?
âOne of my colleagues is Dr. Lina's cousin. I explained to him your situation and he talked to her. I guess she was delighted to find out that the one and only Dr. Zayneâs girlfriend wanted to see her- so she pushed back one of her appointments.â
You couldnât believe what you were hearing. Without another thought, you move off the couch and wrap your arms around his neck. Zayne reciprocates the hug and cradles your head to his chest.
âThank you.â
Zayne's hand continues to stroke your hair, a bit hesitant as he chooses his next words carefully. "Darling, I want to apologize for my behavior earlier."
You pull away with furrowed eyebrows as he meets your eyes.
"You were right, it seems I was a bit jealous." His hand brushes back a stray lock of your hair. "If you were required to go see another male doctor, I should have been more understanding of that. It wasn't right nor professional for me to intervene without your consent-"
"Zayne." Your sharp tone cuts off his apology. "You donât need to apologize for anything. I understand how difficult it is for you to confront your emotions. Honestly, I couldnât be more relieved. I had already told you that I wasnât comfortable seeing a male doctor for this, so you being jealous and taking action like that is kind of sexy."
"You think that was sexy?" Zayne smirks as if humored by the situation. "Really."
You shrug and nod your head, "I mean, yeah. You being all protective like that and realizing you're jealous is something I don't get to see every day. Maybe I should make you jealous more often..."
He lets out a low growl and pulls you back to his chest, lips brushing against your hairline as he inhales your shampoo.
"It would be wise not to push it," He warns. "Besides, Iâd much rather owe Dr. Lina a favor than you forced to be uncomfortable.â His thumb brushes over your ear.
âWhatâs the favor?â
âThat I see one of her children. With the discovery of his new evol, I guess his heart had some abnormal fluctuations.â
You frown at his answer. A child with heart problems already?
Zayne notices your change in demeanor and he tilts your chin up to look at him.
âDonât fret over it darling, Iâm seeing him tomorrow and she had already given me a brief rundown on his condition. It sounds like itâs just the body getting used to the abundance of power. It's common in children.â
You nod, relieved. If anyone can figure it out, itâs your boyfriend.
The rest of the night was spent cuddling on the couch and snacking on sweets while the cliche drama played in the background.
âââ-
Your appointment with Dr. Lina went very smoothly and she said you were in perfect health.
By the next week, you were approved to continue out in the field and the heavy weight was lifted off your shoulders.
Zayne was very relieved to find out his hypothesis was correct with Lindaâs son, Ivan. As it turns out Ivanâs evol was super speed and the fluctuations in his heart were just him needing to burn off the energy.
You were glad it all worked out, thanks to your Dr. Zayne.

Xavier:
Xavier rarely has trouble sleeping, but tonight, a nightmare that made him relive his past has truly shaken him to his core. The fear lingered and his chest felt heavy. He was worried that once he fell asleep again, the dream might return again.
His gaze shifts to you, sleeping peacefully. He reaches out to you, tucking a stray lock of your hair behind your ear and then tracing his fingertips traces the line of your jaw, caressing your warm skin. You were warm and alive and that brought him comfort.
The tender touch, stirred you awake. Your eyes flutter open to meet Xavierâs concerned gaze, his expression softening when he realizes you woke up.
âIâm sorry.. I didnât mean to wake you,â He whispered, his hands continuing to caress your cheek.
Itâs surprising to see Xavier awake before you. You knew that his dreams mustâve troubled him and that words couldnât ease him now, not the way your touch could.
You sat up beside him, your arms reaching for him to pull him closer. You nuzzle against his palm, pressing your soft lips to the inner part of his hand before trailing a kiss to the back of his hand. The sweet gesture seemed to calm him, the tension disappearing.
Slowly, you adjust both your positions until you are both more comfortable. You laid down, guiding his head to rest on your chest, wrapping your arms around him. Gently, you ran your fingers through his hair as his body relaxed against yours.
Zayne:
Zayne is not surprised when he has this nightmare again. Itâs the same one that haunts him every night. The faces, the voices, it all felt too real.
He sits up when he wakes up, the familiar weight of the nightmare still lingers. He pinches the bridge of his nose, trying to brush it off but the guilt gnaws at him. But his heart sinks once he realizes that he woke you up. It disturbed you too from your peaceful slumber.
âGo back to sleep....â He murmurs softly as he tries to tuck you back in but you brush off his hand and sit up beside him.
âNightmare?â You asked, your voice laced with sleepiness as you rub your eyes.
He nods, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips to mask it off. âIâm okay now.â But you can see right through his lie, you know him all too well.
You would offer to make him tea and he only accepts as long as he makes it with you. As the kettle heats, you find a good book to read, something light and nothing related to medical reports so it would help distract him.
He knows what youâre doing and itâs sweet. Itâs one of the things he loves about you. Youâre trying to lull him back to sleep but instead youâre the one who dozes off first. A soft and genuine smile tugs at the corners of his lips when he notices you curled up beside him and your breathing is even and slow.
With a quiet sigh, he closes the book you both were trying to read and places it carefully on the nightstand. He shifts you slightly, tucking you back in the comforts of your blankets before settling himself beside you. His arm slides around your waist, pulling you closer as he rests his chin on the top of your head.
Unfortunately, the nightmares do return but this time there was a shift in it. A familiar hunter who he loves and finds comfort in, comes to save him, erasing the guilt that haunts him every night and shaping each nightmare back into a dream.
Rafayel:
You wake up to a cool pressure against your skin, blinking sleepily youâre met with a shimmering lint of pearls scattered across yours and Rafayelâs pillow. They slid off your pillows as you adjusted your position, your heart tightening as you realized what it meant. Rafayel has been crying.
You gently brush away the pearls as you adjust your position to cradle him. His brows furrowed, his mouth pouted, and his skin glittered from his tears. You murmur reassurance softly until his eyes fluttered open.
He pretends he didnât dream anything bad, deflecting the nightmare that haunts him into a joke.
âI dreamt I was back in Lemuria and...you were turned into this evil fishie. Who knew even a small fishie like you could be so mean..âÂ
You could tell that he didnât want to talk about it or dig deeper into his nightmare so you shift the conversation to asking about Lemuria or the sea, his beloved home.
You could tell the tension in his body eases as he spoke about his home but as the night wore on, you both adjusted the position you were both in, into something comfortable.
Heâd nuzzle closer to you, his forehead resting against yours with a content smile. His reasoning, âHold on tightly to me. That way, you wonât turn into an evil fishie again.â
Youâll hold him close as you both drift into peaceful sleep. But it doesnât stop there. Rafayel would cling onto you DAY and NIGHT like a Koala for at least a week until he forgot about his nightmare.
Sylus:
The rapid rise and fall of his chest stirs you awake. Sure, youâre familiar with his fast heartbeat, but tonight was different. His breathing was uneven and strained, his eyebrows were furrowed in discomfort and soft grunts slipped from his lips as he shifted in his sleep.
His eyes flutter open and his expression softens when he sees you laying on top of him, gently rubbing reassuring circles on his arm.
âDid I wake you, sweetie? âm sorry,â he murmurs, his large hands finding their way to your hair, gently running through it.
âItâs okay Sy,â You sleepily rub your eyes, sitting up from his chest. âDo you wanna talk about it?â
He sighs, pulling you closer. His arms would lift you up to adjust you until your head was nestled in the crook of his neck, just the way you both liked it. âI thought I almost lost you again..â
Sylus would ask if you could sing or hum for him as your voice only brings him comfort. You would know he fell asleep when his fingers that slip through your hair slowed, stopping their tracks on your arm.
A small sleepy smile tugs at the corners of his lips as you press a soft kiss to his lips before you nuzzle against him.

rafe + voyeurism
warnings: handyman!rafe, rafe is pervy lol, flirting, pet names, rafe watches you in the shower, masturbation, oral (m. & f. receiving), dirty talk, unprotected sex, shower sex, slight fluff, rafe answers the door when your date knocks >:)
a/n: inspired by the small piece i wrote here <3 all credit to @rafesheaven for handyman!rafe đ¤ i highly recommend her fics with him!
wc: 2.4k
âwhatâs the problem now, pretty?â rafe answered the phone, popping open a can of beer as your sweet little voice sounded on the other line. ârafe, my shower is out!â you whined, adjusting the pink fluffy robe around your body. âwell, whatâs wrong with it, babe?â your cheeks heated at the name. rafe knew exactly what was wrong with it, heâs the one who messed it up last time he was there so he had a reason to come back. âi twisted the knob for it to turn on, but i think the handle is loose..â you explained. rafe hummed, getting up from his recliner. âiâll be there in five.â
rafe lived in the same apartments as you, just in a different complex not too far from your own. it wasnât long before you heard his heavy footsteps outside of your door, opening it before he could knock. âare you wearing anything underneath that?â he motioned towards your pre-shower ensemble. you whispered a âno..â dragging him in by his large arm. âi have to be ready in one hour!â you were frantic as rafe followed behind you, his eyebrows knitting in confusion. âitâs nearly seven oâclock, where are you off to?â you moved aside to let rafe through, taking a seat on the edge of the sink counter.
âmy friends set me up on a blind date, âsaid they were tired of me being single.. so.â rafe couldnât help the way his jaw ticked. âa blind date, huh? is he picking you up here?â rafe set his toolbox down as he got on his knees. âyeah, he insisted on doing so, too. which i thought was a little weird but.. itâs okay i guess.â you shrugged, crossing one leg over the other. rafe looked back, the opening of your robe exposing your bare legs and thighs. thankfully, you were too distracted by something else to see rafeâs tongue glide over his bottom lip. âso.. uh, tell me about this guy..â
rafe let you ramble on, feigning interest as he learned your date was just an arrogant asshole. fortunately, you had a habit of veering off track when it came to having conversations, which lead to you now telling him about a recipe you saw on a late night cooking show. âiâll make it and you can come over and taste test it, how does that sound?â rafe nodded, though he would much rather taste test something else. âi think that sounds great.â he sat up, tossing the last tool in his toolbox with a clank! âalright, moment of truth,â rafe twisted the shower knob, and sure enough the water came out perfectly.
you hopped off the counter, not realizing your robe had come undone a little bit. the valley of your breasts were peeking through, the sight making rafe let out a breath. âthank you!â you grabbed his hand and helped him off the floor. âitâs no problem.â the man in front of you shamelessly stared at your chest, your eyes following his. you gasped at the amount of cleavage that was out, spinning around to cover yourself up. âiâm so sorry, i donât know how that happened!â you covered your face in embarrassment as rafe laughed to himself. âiâm not complaining.â
rafe walked around you, making you topple forward a bit when he landed a playful smack on your backside. if it was anyone else, you wouldâve kicked them out of your apartment with a threat to make a police report.. but it was rafe, so you offered him your fridge instead. âyou could take whatever you want! iâll be out in a sec!â rafe took you up on your offer, grabbing a beer that you specifically bought for him whenever he made a surprise visit. popping it open, he took a swig, reaching for his phone in his pocket only for it not to be there. âshit.â he put the beer down, checking the rest of pockets.
realizing it must be in the bathroom, rafe cursed under his breath when he heard the shower running. ây/n?â you couldnât hear him over the water, your eyes screwed shut as you washed your hair. opening the door slightly, rafe peeked in and saw his phone on the floor. he swallowed thickly, the scent of your shampoo filling his senses. donât look up, donât look up, donât look up, rafe chanted in his head, failing miserably when he ultimately zeroed in on your naked form. he knew you were perfect already, but seeing you like this was next level.
he watched as the suds from your hair dripped down to your tits, the clear glass growing foggy with shower steam. he wondered how youâd feel in his hands, wishing so bad he could take a tit in his mouth. rafeâs chest rose and fell, his cock stirring in his pants as you turned around and bent down for your body wash. luckily for you, the steam obstructed the view rafe ached so bad to see. without a care in the world, rafe palmed himself through his work jeans, his head tipping back at the much needed friction. âfuck, yeah..â he whispered to himself, thumb gliding over his sensitive tip.
you lathered yourself up, turning around so your back was facing rafe. with hungry eyes, he watched you scrub down your legs, catching a glimpse of your sudsy folds. pulling his bottom lip between his teeth, rafe refrained from letting out a groan as his hand jerked himself with vigor. he wondered if you knew just how bad he wanted you. if it was up to him, youâd be more than just the pretty tenant he likes to bother, and him more than the handyman, but he could dream. rinsing yourself off under the stream of water, you stood there, relishing in the hot water pattering against your skin.
rafe could make you so so happy if youâd just let him. heâd treat you with so much love and care everyday, and fuck you until you were in hysterics. he imagined what it would be like to be in a relationship with you, how waking up next to you would look like. he was so tired of envisioning these things, he shut the door behind him, startling you. ârafe?â you peered up at the man standing in the middle of your bathroom, his hand in his pants as he looked at you with dark eyes. âw-what are you doing?â he didnât say anything as he started undressing, his shirt falling to the floor.
âtell me to leave.â his jeans were next to go, the imprint of his length making you swallow thickly. rafe smirked at your lack of response, internally singing as you slid open the glass door for him to join you. you had butterflies fluttering in your tummy when he took off his underwear. rafe was so tall, he had to lean down in order to get in without hitting himself, his broad shoulders barely fitting through. once he was in, your cheeks heated as reality hit you. here you were, standing naked with the man whoâs been a pervy flirt for nearly six months now.
âyou okay?â rafeâs hands found your hips, pulling you close until his cock sat heavily between you two. you nodded, wrapping your arms around his neck. he groaned when he felt your nipples against his chest. bringing his head down, you let out a yelp when his hands snaked down to your ass and squeezed. you reached up on your tippy toes and kissed him, his mouth moving perfectly with yours. rafe wasted no time, backing you up into the shower wall where he grinded his hard-on between your thighs. taking the base of him in your hand, you gasped at how hard he felt in your palm.
âcan i?â you were already getting on your knees before him, rafe groaning at how eager you felt to please him. rafe grabbed a handful of your hair, staring at you intently as you stroked him before meeting his eyes. you looked gorgeous like this. eyes sparkling up at his face, rafe admired your features under the soft light of the bathroom. you kissed his tip, licking a stripe up from the underside of his cock before he pushed himself between your lips. your pink nails dug into his skin, your eyebrows knitting together as he forced his length down your throat.
you moaned, the sensation making him shudder. âfuck,â he grunted through gritted teeth, âfeelsâ so fuckin good.â he balanced an arm on the wall, his eyes screwing shut as you worked your magic on his cock. the way you bobbed your head up and down made him want to shoot his load all over your face, your hands cupping your tits as you squeezed the sensitive swells of your breasts. rafe was mesmerized, his mouth hanging open as he watched you pull off of him with a pop! you smiled up at the man above you, rubbing the head of his cock across your lips.
deciding he couldnât wait any longer, rafe picked you up like a ragdoll, your legs wrapping around his waist as he kissed you roughly. you whimpered when your back met the cold tile on the wall. spreading your thighs apart, you looked down when rafe guided himself between your slick folds, your clit aching to be touched. you two exchanged looks, as if he was asking for permission. placing your palms on his shoulders for leverage, you practically melted in his hands when he thrusted into you. whimpering his name, rafe urged you to lock your ankles around his back.
âyâhave no idea how much iâve thought about doing this to you.â he spoke into the curve of your neck, his body glistening from shielding you from the shower head. you recalled laying in bed one particular night, thinking about rafe and those rough hands of his. needless to say you fell into a deep slumber imagining your fingers as his own. your mouth opened and closed a few times like you wanted to say something but couldnât get the words out. watching you struggle was easily the hottest thing rafe has ever seen. âtalk, baby, i need to hear that voice so i can dream of it later.â
soon after he said that, you were whining and blabbering about how much you thought about him when you were alone. âyeah? âtouching yourself to the thought of me?â he taunted, hips slamming into yours as the heels of your feet dug into his back. âyes! oh, godâ i just wanted to feel you inside of me..â rafe cursed at your words, pressing a searing kiss to your lips. âshow me how you did it, âpretty. let me feel this pussy squeeze around me.â you let out a shaky breath, the pads of your fingers finding your sensitive bundle of nerves. you gasped, your back arching off of the wall.
rafe watched you rub delicate circles on the little bud, your body jolting every now and then when the feeling became overwhelming. âcanât!â you shook your head when you were close, your thighs threatening to snap shut around his hips. rafe moved your hand out of the way and replaced it with his own, his fingers working mercilessly on your puffy clit. letting out a scream, your forehead fell on his shoulder as his release teetered on the edge of pure euphoria. he was going to fill you up soon, the thought alone making his hips stutter as you cried out in bliss.
rafe held you against his chest, his hot seed filling you up with every moan that left his mouth. you were jelly at this point, your orgasm hitting you in intense waves of ecstasy as rafe twitched inside your soaking cunt. slowly but surely, your highs subsided, both of you panting against each otherâs lips. âthink you could walk?â you shook your head, your thighs still visibly trembling at his sides. he nodded, reassuring you with a âokay, donât worry baby.â still holding you against the wall, rafe pulled out of you with a groan. whimpering at the feeling of being empty, you watched as he twisted the shower knob off.
holding you bridal style, rafe stepped out of the shower and placed you gently on the sink counter. he quickly grabbed two towels from the little shelf you had in the bathroom and dried you off, wrapping the soft cotton around your shoulders. you licked your lips, the sight of the water droplets dripping down his abs was making you ready for round two. wrapping the towel around his waist, rafe carried you once more to your bed. âagain.â you looked up at him with a pout. rafe laughed, pressing a kiss to the tip of your nose. âyeah? you want more?â you nodded, pulling him on top of you.
slotting himself between your thighs, he kissed you deeply before there was a knock at the door. pausing for a second, you wondered who it could be before your eyes widened. âthatâs my date! wellâ was, my date.. oh, god!â you giggled, covering your face in embarrassment. glancing at the clock on your bedside table, rafe smiled. 8:00 PM. âwow, heâs just in time.â he got up, making you gasp. âdonât be mean to him!â you called out as rafe answered the front door. the poor guyâs smile faded quickly when he saw a shredded, over six feet tall of a man answer the door.
âsorry, i must be at the wrong apartment..â he blinked, about to leave before rafe stopped him. âyouâre here for y/n, right? sheâs inside.â rafe reached for the flowers in your dateâs hand, flashing him a wink. âsheâs a little preoccupied right now, though.â shutting the door in his face, rafe hid the flowers behind his back before stalking back inside your room. bless your heart, your towel was gone as you laid naked and pretty, waiting all for him. âi hope you like pink roses, âcause i just got you a dozen of âem.â you sat up, a gasp leaving your lips as rafe kneeled down on the side of your bed.
âaw, how pretty!â you gave them a sniff, pecking rafeâs cheek. âcan you put them in water for me?â you batted your eyelashes at him, the action sending rafe into a frenzy. you were so cute. doing as you asked, rafe came back and got on his knees once more. âi was thinking.. you were so gracious enough to take me in your mouth, itâs only right if i return the favor, yeah?â he hooked your thighs to the tops of his shoulders, excitement pooling in your belly. âyesââ you were cut off when you felt rafeâs tongue delve between your folds. âyouâre so fuckinâ sweet, i can eat you all night.â and he did.

Mom!friend reader bringing everyone cute lunches at the bau with personalized little notes for each person đ maybe hotch doesnât even know that you do this for the others too so when someone mentions readers cooking, heâs like âwatâ
personalized
ADORABLE cw; bau!fem!reader, established relationship, mentions of food, fluff and aaron being cute <3
the pace at which aaron was moving must've been more intense than he intended and realized; as he hurried past jj's desk, the small draft that followed caused a small piece of paper to flutter to the ground.
uttering an apology, aaron immediately reached down to pick it up. however it had landed face up, and his eyebrows furrowed in small confusion as he caught a glimpse of its contents.
your familiar handwriting kept his eyes, instead of peering away as he normally would - 'my sweet jj! thank you so much for your help on the arizona case file, you're a total lifesaver and your expertise is always appreciated, hope you know that. enjoy <3 ps - your new lavender sweater is the cutest. must plan a shopping day w/ pen soon!'
aaron's eyebrows stayed in that confused line, his eyes shifting up to jj's in a silent question.
"came with the cookies." jj answered for him, pointing her head towards the tupperware container perched on her desktop.
instantly aaron's mind made the connection - so that's why you were up late baking. that made more sense; the time you had spent baking was much too long for the small plateful quantity he had found reserved for him and jack this morning.
"pretty girl sure knows how to cook." derek added into the conversation as he approached the cluster of desks, raising his hand to pat aaron on the back but stopped himself halfway - aaron shot him a pointed look, hiding his own amusement, while jj attempted to conceal her smile with her palm.
another eyebrow furrow. "and when have you had her cooking?"
"here and there. always comes with a note too. i could just about fill a desk drawer with how many i have." derek admitted, with his signature, vivid grin. "she may be yours, we get special treatment too, y'know."
a bit later, you strolled into aaron's office, juggling numerous files in your hands.
"as requested," you started, dropping them firmly onto aaron's desk. "five action reports, minus dave's. he told me when you're as experienced and italian as he is, you can slack off and kinda get away with it. but i think that's his fancy way of admitting he's old." you joked with a eye roll.
"thank you," aaron flashed you a smile, sorting through his current papers. assuming that was all, you spun on your heel to head out and return to the everlasting joy of paperwork, but, aaron's voice stopped you.
"hey hold it, c'mere a sec."
you pulled back one of the chairs in front of hiss desk, the legs producing a scraping noise against the floorboards, but aaron gestured for you to come around. your eyes darted in the direction of his open blinds, then back at him. 'you sure?'
aaron nodded in confirmation. and if you needed any more convincing, once in reach you were pulled onto his lap, his hold on you tight.
if he wasn't being a stickler on the open affection, neither were you; you relaxed yourself against him just as you would normally, your body melting into his and throwing your arms loosely around his neck. "what's up?"
"i didn't know you wrote the team notes."
"oh," you laughed softly, with a light shake of your head. by habit your fingers ran along the skin of aaron's neck, scratching the nape of his hair gently. "yeah, if i bring in lunch or a treat or something. or both. or sometimes just because. an appreciation reminder."
aaron nodded, his fingers drumming against your hip comfortably.
"that's not a problem, is it?"
"well," aaron pretended to think, his hand changing motions and sliding up and down your side, "yes."
"actually?" you blurted as your own fingers paused. that wasn't the answer you expected, and it caused a rush of nervous heat to pool within you. until, you saw the feigned, solemn expression on his face.
aaron peered down at you, his playful eyes canceling out the forced pout on his lips. under his breath, he mumbled humorously, "i thought i was the only one getting notes."
you laughed brightly, the joy within the sound immediately bringing a smile to aaron's lips. "oh don't worry, they don't get the lipstick smooch on theirs. that's reserved for you and you only."
"i would hope not."
"or the, occasional... explicitness."
"again, i would hope not." aaron laughed again. his lips graced your temple, lingering gently as he spoke, "you're sweet."
"a very wise, very attractive person once said, 'people need to know they're important'." your lips quirked into a loving smile, a glint in your eyes. "thought this would be an easy way - i learned from the best."

hii queen! i saw that your requests are open, could you write something with daryl and a reader in the earlier seasons who are dating in secret? (they dont want no one to know because daryl is new to relationships and i believe he would be more reserved a little in the beggining), however the group ended up noticing how soft he is to her and how he always keep an eye on herđŠ and also i just wanted to say that i read some of yours writtings and they are amazingđđ
Gimme Shelter | Daryl Dixon x Fem!Reader
Tags: Swearing, twd typical violence, kind of slow burn, fluff, lightish angst, half proof-read
Words: 4.4k
A/N: Fank you so much nonny đđ I've been really enjoying writing for Daryl, he was one of my biggest obsessions as a teenager, and that obsession will continue to prevail.
And this is such a cute request, I love secret relationship tropes so much. I decided to do Prison era!Daryl if that's okay, I assume you probably meant for like season 1 or 2, but I felt like it would be cute in the prison.
I know that a slow burn wasn't requested BUT the thoughts just kept coming the more I wrote. Also sorry this took so long to post.
Growing up people would always say you will find the one when you least expect it. Whether itâs in a grocery store, at the park, in a museum. That one person youâre bound to spend the rest of your life with will be there. As if they were waiting for you, and you for them. It was a fairytale dream, one that you lost faith in long ago.Â
There were moments you had thought that maybe you finally found that person. Until disappointment would strike time and time again. Your experience with relationships had been less than ideal, never lasting longer than a year. Cheaters, liars, and worst of all abusers. Those types of men had always been the most drawn to you. Making you feel as if you were cursed somehow, unlucky.Â
After a while and a slew of pity attempts, you gave up on dating for your own benefit. Deciding it would be best to focus more on yourself. Not allowing yourself to succumb to the societal pressure of getting married by twenty and popping kids out by twenty one.Â
That was the dream of a delusional small town teenager, too young to think for themselves let alone plan a future family, and that had been your dream once upon a time. Maybe you read too many stories about young girls finding their prince charming and living happily ever after.
You started to value your alone time. Enjoying the feeling of not having to walk on eggshells in order to keep the other party happy. Things were smooth sailing for about two years. You changed your life around, got a new job, a new car, and a new apartment all within a few months.Â
A newfound happiness was settling inside of you, you were beginning to find yourself again. You became more confident in who you were as a person, allowing yourself to actually live your life instead of just simply being alive.Â
But life had a twisted sense of humor.Â
Things started with frantic breaking news segments on the news. Reporters talking about the horrifying developments coming out of France. In the beginning you had hoped that things wouldnât escalate past that, hoped that this would be an isolated incident. But things just got worse the more you watched. An unknown virus wreaking havoc across the entirety of Europe, spreading like wildfire across each country.Â
After the first case of the virus was reported in Ohio, you started to worry. Things were getting too close for your liking, and with the details they were releasing it wasnât going to get any better. With each new segment that aired your mother would call, urgently telling you to come back to live with them until this sickness blows over. You knew that it would be your best bet.Â
Once the local grocery stores started getting raided, you found yourself being thankful that your family was full of survivalist nuts. Growing up hearing them praise people like Jim Baker, and other televangelist hackjobs like him that weaponized fear mongering for profit.Â
Your parents home was stocked full of all the essentials thanks to your aunt Jess. First aid kits, canned food, water to last just a little over a month. It was everything you needed and more.Â
âYâalways gotta be prepared, honey.â Your wine-drunk aunt had told you after a week, the both of you lounging on the sofa as you watched the news. âYou donât know how long this crapâs gonna last.âÂ
It all went by so quickly. The news stations eventually stopped airing not long after the first report hit Georgia, they were urging everyone to evacuate to Atlanta, leaving the streets a mess of honking and dead-stop traffic right outside of your parentâs home.Â
And for a short while you had settled into this false hope that you were safe there with them.Â
That was until you came back from a short trip to a ransacked Dollar General just down the street.Â
The house was oddly quiet when you walked inside. The TV was muted on a flickering static screen, your dadâs recliner was empty, a blanket on the floor. The backdoor that led to the porch was ajar, the sun shining through the crack onto the wood flooring. You remembered that feeling in your stomach as you walked closer, fingers slowly curling around the doorknob.Â
When you walked outside it felt as if a bucket of ice water was dumped over your head. The horrifying sight of your motherâs body being gutted by your own father and uncle, fresh blood dripped down the side of the RV next to your auntâs already mangled corpse. Your hands were trembling fiercely, a nauseating coppery smell filling your nose.Â
All you could remember was running. Packing whatever you could get your hands on before taking your motherâs minivan. Â
Not long after the death of your family, you were taken in by a small group of five. They were unstable, barely hanging on by a thread, with almost nightly arguments tilting them further over the edge.Â
It made things harder for you. The tension starting to make you too nervous to sleep without a knife tucked securely under your pillow.Â
The self appointed leader demanded too much, wanting more than half of the rations to himself. He was a cruel hearted individual, mind diluted by the atrocities you were all forced to witness. A dangerous man who was quick tempered, and ruthless to anything or anybody you came across.Â
After a month of running with them you made a mistake. You hid a portion of your findings from him. Food that he would have taken the majority of. But you were starving, at the point of hardly caring about your survival if it meant you could eat just a little bit more.
Other members had found out though, outing you quickly. As a punishment he tied you up, stole everything from you. Photo albums, your weapons, your food, bandages, it didnât matter what it was. After beating you he left you in the supply closet of a convenient store you were temporarily camping out in.Â
Part of you half expected them to come back, but you knew better than to think positively now, that could get you killed nowadays.Â
The minutes blended into hours into what felt like days. The zip ties around your wrists and ankles dug harshly into your skin, biting into the raw bleeding flesh as you struggled to free yourself. Eventually it got to the point where you started slipping in and out of consciousness, your body exhausted and dehydrated. You were sure you would die there.Â
But, much to your surprise, your luck hadnât run dry just yet.Â
In your haze you could hear the sound of once shuffling corpses hit against the door with a heavy thud. Hushed voices barely graced your ears through the door, two men talking to each other.Â
Your voice was hoarse as you pathetically attempted to call out. Your throat was dry from the lack of water, forcing your words to come out as a croaking squeak. Â
The door had been opened cautiously, the beam of a flashlight assaulting your eyes. You attempted to focus on the man crouching down above you, his blurred features obscured by the baseball hat he wore.Â
âRick!â The man called over his shoulder, another figure coming into view. He was wearing what seemed to be a police officerâs uniform. Whether it was stolen or actually his, you didnât care, you just wanted out of this damn closet.Â
Both men were quick to cut your binds and hauled you to your feet. The quick motion was all it took for you to finally pass out. A thick blanket of exhaustion pressed into you, forcing your eyes to flutter closed and your body to go completely limp. Unable to cling onto consciousness any longer
In those last moments you almost thought that they would just leave you there. Not wanting to bother helping a now passed out stranger, and you wouldnât have blamed them if they did abandon you.Â
Instead when you woke up you were laying on a couch, an older man with short white hair standing over you.Â
At first you had almost believed you dreamed it all, the outbreak, the group. That you were in some sort of comatose state and the world was not overrun by flesh eating monsters. But the stinging pain deep within your wrists proved otherwise, the gashes covered by white gauze and medical tape.Â
The white haired man, Hershel, ran you through your current state. Malnourishment, dehydration, feverish temperatures. It was evidently clear that you had been through the wringer, and if Glenn and Rick had not found you when they did, you would have died within the day. In fact he had said it was a miracle that Hershel himself could have saved you.Â
You figured you had always been stubborn, though, you never gave up easily.Â
Hershel had been kind enough to allow you to stay in his house until you got better. Providing you with enough water and food to get you back on your feet.Â
The family allowed you to use their shower. When you looked at yourself in the mirror you understood why they were so insistent. A thick layer of grime and blood coated your skin, your hair was matted, your clothes ripped beyond repair.Â
You couldnât help but cry, realizing just how quickly you lost yourself out there. Your humanity has faded so much in such a short amount of time, leaving you a hollow shell of your former self. You looked like a stranger to yourself.
Over the next week Rickâs group urged you to stay. They knew you had nowhere else to go, no family to run back to.Â
You were hesitant, though. You didnât want to continue to be a burden, you were a stranger infiltrating an already close knit group. The closeness they had made you feel even more lonely than you did in your previous group, because at least when it came to them, you didnât crave that companionship.Â
Gone were the days of blind trust, knowing that everything always came with a price these days. So your knife stayed tucked beneath your pillow, fingers clutching onto the handle as you kept an eye on the zipped up entrance of the tent.Â
On many sleepless nights, which were frequent, you would sit yourself in front of the dwindling fire outside of your tent. Mind wandering to everything thatâs happened to you in the past three months, the things youâve done to stay alive, the permanent scars you would carry with you for life.Â
You stewed in your bitterness. Chewing ruthlessly on the skin around your fingernails.Â
Your tent was further away from the rest of the groupâs, tucked away in your own area. You found yourself watching the rest of them at first. Thoughts of running away while everyone slept crossed your mind more times than you could count.Â
Until one night you heard a twig snap behind you, your knife quickly unsheathed and pointing towards what you thought to be a threat,Â
âGeez. Youâre almost as bad as Daryl.â One of the older men from Rickâs group, Dale, chuckled as he walked closer to your secluded camp, his hands up in surrender. âBut I can go if you want.â He smiled softly.Â
âSorry⌠Bad habit.â You said quietly, setting your knife back down next to your thigh.Â
He shook his head, taking a seat in front of the fire, âNo need to be sorry. I canât blame you for still being a little paranoid.âÂ
Dale quickly became a source of comfort for you, sporting an almost fatherly personality when talking to you. He was kind, and realistic which was exactly what you needed after everything youâve been through. Over the course of a few nightly visits he was able to get you to open up a little, telling him about your former group, he was sympathetic and understanding.Â
âThe world has truly gone to hell.â He grimaced, taking his bucket hat off of his head. âBut, we have good people here. Believe it or not.â His smile was reassuring.Â
After a few days you started to come around more. Helping the women with laundry, listening to the stories they told about their lives before, anecdotes to keep themselves sane.Â
It wasnât hard to understand why they were so close. The tragedy of their former camp just outside of Atlanta, the C.D.C, Loriâs son getting shot, the people theyâve lost along the way.Â
Slowly you felt more like yourself again.
Every so often they would mention that same name Dale did, Daryl. The only member of the group you had yet to meet personally.Â
You had seen him walking around the camp, or tucked away in his own tent, further away from the group much like yours was. He was gruff looking, intimidating to the eye, and his occasional temper didnât help much. But with how insistent he was on finding Carolâs missing daughter, you could tell there was warmth beneath his rigid exterior.Â
The first time you talked to him was less than ideal. You were attempting to set up a snare trap in the woods, wanting to try and contribute a little bit more. The frustration quickly turned to embarrassment when he snuck up on you. Your feet got caught in your own trap and caused you to trip and fall.Â
âLooks like yâcaught somethinâ.â Daryl attempted to joke, walking past you and deeper into the woods with his crossbow pointed towards the trees.Â
You cut yourself free of the poorly made snare and ran to catch up with him. Choosing your words carefully.Â
âDaryl, right?â All you got was a grumble in response, âListen I know you donât know me or anythinâ... But could you teach me how to hunt?âÂ
âTeach yourself. I ainât got time for babysittinâ.â His response stung a little, harsher than you had hoped it would be.Â
You figured you should have expected that, though, the conversation him and Shane had this morning was heated. An argument almost leading to a full on fight. The tension was growing higher and higher as the days dragged on with no signs of Sophia.Â
Then the group found out about what was inside the barn.
One day when Rick was out helping Hershel, Shane took it upon himself to break the chains on the barn door. Walker after walker spilled out, being shot down ruthlessly by some members of Rickâs group, while the Greene family cried out for them to stop. Their worst nightmare coming true, as well as Carolâs.Â
A little girl limped out, skin grey and beginning to rot. Her hair was matted with leaves, eyes a milky grey color, and a rasping snarl emitting from her. There was a large gash on her shoulder, a bite. It was devastating to see a child fall victim to such a death. But even more so for Carol, coming to realize that each day they restlessly searched, she had already been dead..Â
The safety that the farm provided didnât last long after that.Â
Shane was quickly losing his grip, Dale was killed by a lone walker, and eventually the fields were overrun by walkers. A massive hoard stumbling onto the property, drawn in by the frequent gunfire.Â
You had lost quite a few on that night, good people that had helped you come out of your shell, people that didnât deserve what they got. In all honesty you didnât think you would have made it out either if it wasnât for Andrea and Daryl.Â
After the fall of the farm, you were all lost. Hershel and his family had lost their home, and the entire group was left to search.Â
But you had to bury your sadness for the time being, winter was quickly approaching. The leaves were changing into a crisp orange color, and the wind had a bite to it in the mornings, leaving you shivering as you huddled closer to the fire. Daryl had been kind enough to let you borrow his poncho some nights, insisting you probably needed it more than him.Â
Daryl seemed to warm up to you after a while too. He would subtly make sure you ate by leaving a half eaten can of vegetables next to you, or would occasionally sharpen your knife for you after doing his own. It was a kind gesture, letting you know that he was starting to trust you.Â
Eventually it got to the point where your group finally ran out of canned food. There were no stores around, and everyone was too cold or tired to go anywhere. So Daryl decided to take you out to the woods, finally going out of his way to teach you how to hunt.Â
âYâknow what youâre trackinâ?â He asked one day, slowly walking beside you, following a small winding trail in the woods.Â
You were quiet for a second, thinking as you analyzed the tracks next to your feet, âCould be a deer, whatever it is, itâs got hooves.âÂ
âObviously.â He huffed, resisting the urge to smile when you glared at him.Â
âShut the hell up, man.â A small sigh came from you, âCould be a hog.â You crouched down and moved the leaves out of the way to get a better look, âThe prints are close together, if it were a deer theyâd be further apart, right?âÂ
Daryl just shrugged, âYou tell me.âÂ
Thatâs how your hunts would usually go, Daryl providing frustrating nonanswers as you attempted to close in on your prey. He wasnât going to babysit you, as he had originally said when you first asked, you had to figure it out yourself. You knew that was the only way youâd be able to learn, even if it was mildly annoying.Â
The winter finally started to melt into spring, temperatures rising and falling occasionally until settling into an in between. And soon enough your restless searching came to an end, the high chain link fences surrounding a prison with walkers meandering the expansive field calling your names. A soon to be shelter for your group and many others.Â
The fight against Woodbury had been a painful ordeal, with Maggie and Glenn getting taken hostage, and Daryl leaving with his brother. The group was briefly left in shambles, hanging on by a thread as Rick slowly faded away, losing his way after Loriâs untimely death and the birth of her daughter.Â
When Daryl left it broke your heart a little. The two of you had bonded over the course of the harsh winter, often seeking each other out as a heat source. Whispering stories of your families filling the silence as the biting wind wrapped itself around you. But you could never blame him for leaving, knowing you would do the same thing if you could.Â
The first attack from the Governor was when Daryl finally returned, his mouthy brother in tow. They had rescued Rick on the outskirts of the fence, luckily finding him just in time before he was overpowered.Â
It made you happy to see your friend again, a hand squeezing his shoulder before pulling him into a hug. It had been a lot less awkward than you expected, his arms wrapping around your middle and squeezing softly, reassuring you that he was okay.Â
âWell, ainât that just cute.â Merle had teased, pinching his little brother on the cheek.Â
But the tragedies were never ending, your group seemed to constantly be one step away from deathâs doorstep.Â
The Governor decided to make his way back to the prison, armed gunmen following behind him.Â
They wanted to execute every last one of you no matter what it took. Your group had laid out traps, pretending to have left as requested, lulling them in with a false hope that you were gone. Until the shrill sound of the prison sirens started, smoke grenades being thrown down at their feet in the darkened hallways.Â
The armed militia of men, mothers, and teenagers the Governor recruited had run away in fear, knowing that their fates would be sealed if they stayed any longer.Â
As the weeks continued after the attack, things started to look up. That once forgotten positivity slowly makes its way back into your heart, along with a smile as you allow yourself to get to know the former residence of Woodbury. Your community was slowly forming, a home being made out of the prison.Â
It was easy to become comfortable.Â
And as your fondness grew for Daryl, you remembered what your mother used to tell you.Â
âYou will find the one when you least expect it.âÂ
Who knew that the world had to end in order for you to find him. With every soft touch, lingering whisper, and a quick stolen kiss in the shadows of your cell, it grew increasingly more obvious that your mother may have been right.Â
Daryl was the only person you felt safe enough to be vulnerable around. His gentleness towards you breaking down the walls around your heart, settling himself deep within it. And you gladly let him. You both decided to keep your relationship a secret. Enjoying the thrill of sneaking around, while also avoiding any teasing remarks that would come from your group.Â
You knew that this was Darylâs first serious relationship, so you wanted to allow him the grace of warming up to the idea. You wanted him to become more comfortable with himself, taking his time with you, soothing any anxious wandering thought he may have.Â
But you knew that the group would notice eventually. Hell, they already were. The small teasing remarks being thrown your way would make Daryl stiffen. He would pick at the strings on his denim jacket as he huffed and grumbled something in response.Â
âYou want me to slip her a note or somethinâ?â Carol teased him, nudging her elbow into his side, âDo you like me? Check yes or no.â She laughed quietly when he rolled his eyes, âCome on Daryl-âÂ
She was cut off by someone running up to him, Glennâs frantic eyes meeting Daryl and Carolâs before quickly sputtering out your name, âI donât know what happened but-âÂ
The poor boy could barely get the words out before Daryl ran off towards the cell block.Â
You were laying in your cell, blood covering your shirt as your side bled profusely. Hershel was quick to try and stop the bleeding, urging everyone to give him room to work.Â
âIf you want her to live, get out, now!âÂ
The blood drained from Darylâs face as he looked at you. Bruises were beginning to bloom on your face and arms, your nose was bleeding and there was a slash on your cheek. Your boyfriend directed his anger towards one of the new members you had taken on a run, pinning him roughly against the concrete wall with his forearm.Â
âThe hell happened out there?! Huh?!â Daryl shouted in the scared manâs face, shrinking in on himself as Rick and Maggie tried to pull Daryl off. âTalk!âÂ
âWe-â The man gulped, âWe got attacked by a small groupâŚâ There were tears in his eyes as he tried to explain, his swollen lip trembling. He didnât look much better than you did honestly, his eye was almost swollen shut, and there was blood coating his hairline, âShe said- said she knew them, some group she was with. I thought they were gonna k-kill us.â He swallowed harshly, âThey shot herâŚâ
Daryl swore he could see red. His shoulders heaving as he started to pace, fingers running through his hair as he tried to process what the man had said. His face was hot, body pulsing with anger as he glanced back into your cell to see you lying there motionless.Â
He stalked back up towards the man, his gaze hard and threatening as he spoke in a gruff voice, âIf she dies, her blood is on your hands.â He pressed his finger hard into the manâs chest, pushing him harshly back into the concrete wall before stalking towards the exit of the prison.Â
It took the entire council to talk Daryl out of hunting this group down himself. Carol telling him it was a suicide mission, and he would die if he left like this. Going into a situation blinded by rage was never good for anyone, especially now, with you lying unconscious in your cell.Â
Luckily for you the bullet went straight through, and all they had to do was wait for you to wake up.Â
Daryl didnât dare leave your side, a rag gently dabbing across your forehead as he whispered softly to you. Unspoken words that he had wished he had told you sooner, words that only you were allowed to hear him say, something he had never dared utter to another person. Not even his own family.Â
âI love you.âÂ
The time seemed to drag on slowly as he waited, his watchful not leaving you for more than a few seconds. His gentle fingers traced patterns on your skin, ignoring the occasional staring that would come from someone passing by your cell. He couldnât bring himself to care about the secrecy, not now.Â
âThat fuckinâ tickles.â He suddenly heard you rasp, your eyes fluttering open and glancing down at his fingers on your forearm.Â
Relief washed over Daryl like cool rain on a hot summer's day. His shoulders sagged and he couldnât help but lean his head down to rest on your arm, a long sigh being released from his lungs.Â
âDarylâŚâ You whispered, making him look at you, âIt was my old group.âÂ
The look on your face was similar to the one you sported when they first found you, terrified, lost, confused. You didnât know what to do with yourself knowing that not only were they still alive, but a lot closer than you would have liked.Â
âI know.â He replied, his hand holding onto yours, âYou donât have tâworry about that right now.âÂ
Even though you were able to find happiness in the apocalypse, tragedy never ceased to sneak up from behind every corner. And you guessed that it had become easy to forget that life had a cruel sense of humor.Â
It always would.

OP: well, that isn't fucking relevant
pairing(s): oscar piastri x mercedes driver!reader
summary: someone tries to threaten your job, oscar has some choice words for him. (OR: the trials and tribulations of being a woman in a male dominated sport)
word count: 2.7k+
an: i kinda hate the white knight trope but i still wrote this lol, it scratches an itch and i think driver!reader did a sufficient amount of defending of herself beforehand. anyway, this is a one shot that's kind of connected to my smau series just a girl. enjoy!!!!! [also standard disclaimer: this does not reflect the opinions of any real life people/companies/organisations/etc. it is fiction. thank you]
Youâre no stranger to sexism in Formula racingâ you knew going into this that youâd have to deal with thinly veiled remarks about your gender and purposefully obtuse questions from reporters who think they know more than you about the sport youâve dedicated your life to. You had to deal with it when you were karting, you had to deal with it during your stint in F2, and you have to deal with it now.
The fact of the matter is that some people do not think you belong here, and therefore are entirely unable to integrate the reality that you are very much here to stay, into their worldview. Youâre lucky to have somehow earned Lewisâ loyalty, which had brought the Mercedes contract and the support of Toto simultaneously. Mercedes-AMG arenât making leaps and bounds into the world of feminism, but youâre grateful for the seat regardless. Youâre here and not going anywhere if you can help it.
You try your best to stay off the bad parts of social media, so as not to be subjected to the barrage of hate comments and death threats directed your way. Youâre toughâ but no oneâs that tough. Itâs fine for the most part. You focus on the racing, how the car feels, your performance and improving it weekend after weekend. You try at least. Youâd love to leave your gender entirely out of the mix, you donât think itâs relevant frankly. But unfortunately, the reporters do. (And so do some choice individuals working on the grid, who just canât seem to keep their big fucking mouths shut about you.)
Itâs disappointing, sureâ but not surprising to sit down at a press conference and get a smattering of questions about your rumoured relationships and extracurricular activities when every other driver gets fifty questions practically thrown at them about their performance, or FIA regulations, or the track conditions. The part that bothers you the most is honestly just the lack of interest. Itâs like they donât think anything you have to say about the sport is valuable so they just donât ask you the same questions they bother to ask the men. That probably is the actual case too.
Soâ yâknowâ youâre not that shocked when a reporter from some sports blog youâve never heard of straight out asks if you âexpect to be switched out with another female driver next year?â
The room goes dead fucking silent in a way that you do actually find satisfying. Itâs good to know that most of the reporters in the room do know a tactless question when they hear one, or at least that you inspire enough fear in people that theyâre waiting with bated breath to hear your response. Next to you, Oscar tenses, you can feel it where your thighs are touching. You can imagine his face right now without looking, that pinched micro-grimace he does. The barest hint of a crease in the bridge of his nose as he tries not to scowl. You want to put your hand on his knee and squeeze it in thanks.
You donât. Instead, you frown and cock your head to the side, meeting the eyes of the reporter across the room.
Slowly, measuredly, you repeat, âIâm sorry, do I expect to be replaced with another female driver next year? Is that what you said?â
He nods, bringing the microphone closer to his mouth as if you really couldnât hear him the first time, âYes, yeah. That is what I asked.â
You hum, pursing your lips as if youâre sincerely considering his question. You can see a few people in the crowd who are cringing already, some of them have been on the receiving end of your tendency to play with your food before you eat it. Your ego feels pretty good about that.
âWhy would Mercedes want to replace me?â you ask in your most polite voice, feigning real curiosity to this man who you doubt has done any research at all on you.
âUm,â he errs, some of his former unflappable confidence leeching out of his tone, âWell, to give more women a chance in Formula Oneââ
You start to speak over him, done with entertaining his ignorance. You bite, ââthere are other teams for that, actually. I donât think itâs presumptuous to say that Iâve earned my seat at Mercedes, or that Iâve proven that I belong here so far this season. In which, I have not qualified or placed below a P7. And I certainly donât think itâs fair of you to ask if I am going to voluntarily give up my hard-earned seat to another person because you think I am here because of some womenâs inclusion effort by Mercedes. And, okay, who knows, maybe I am. But I am not giving up this seat without a fight, nor do I imagine that Mercedes are in a rush to find someone to replace me right now. Youâll have to ask someone to confirm that though.â
You wind down after that, punctuating your point with a firm nod; some of the fight and the fury seeping out as you start to reckon with the potential consequences of your outburst. Mercedesâ PR rep will have something to say surely, youâre just hoping you havenât crossed some kind of uncrossable line. Another part of you doesnât quite care as you watch the reporter gape like a fish out of water, feeling rather satisfied that youâd put him in his place.
Eventually, the room recovers and moves on from you. Checo is getting asked his opinion on tyres while you share a furtive glance with Oscar. He smiles approvingly, mouth closed and the apples of his cheeks pushed up into his eyes. You feel the urge to touch his knee again but resist, instead smiling back as covertly as you possibly can. A warm feeling spreads in your chest and you almost forget about the reporter and his stupid question in favour of watching Oscarâs slow-burn smile.
Mercedes is fine with it, it turns out. Apparently, youâre doing the heavy lifting for them in the feminism department and all they have to do is have Toto or someone come out and say a few words in agreement. It suits them fine, they donât need to take any hard stances and you get the blame if anything goes horribly wrong. That grates at you, of course it does. But youâve got a seat, havenât you? Youâre not going to give it up because Mercedes are covering their asses like the multibillion-dollar company that they are.
It means youâve avoided the all-hands-on-deck PR meeting you thought youâd be stuck in tonight, but itâs left you in too sour a mood for this party. Itâs some function, fundraiser, something or other and theyâve invited all the teams, drivers and âimportantâ FIA staff. This means thereâs an inordinate amount of people here and youâre really not into it.
But youâre still here. Youâve shoved yourself into a cute, strappy, black top, and a denim mini-skirt and youâve even added some cute jewellery in a feeble attempt to match whatever over-the-top outfit Lewis has arrived in. Itâs at least a step up from your usual team polo and leggings, or the Mercedes hoodie that you pull on over it. Youâre comfortable. Youâre fine.
You pull a hand out of the pocket of your oversized leather jacket as Oscar comes back over with your beer. You smile at the expression on his face as you take the neck in between your fingers. Heâs scowling openly, the corners of his lips curled up in distaste.
âBusy?â you ask, then you hold up the beer in thanks, âCheers, by the way.â
âHmm, too crowded,â he affirms, âI lost Lando.â
You shrug, taking a swig of the refreshingly cold beer, âActually? Or did he run off with someone?â
Oscar snorts, âYeah, no. He got into a conversation with Max.â
You laugh, âYeah, in that case, I reckon weâll see Lando in a few hours.â
âDefinitely.â
The two of you share an amused smile before youâre back to looking into the crowd because sometimes, itâs hard for you to look at himâ like looking directly into the sun. Youâre aware of him in your periphery, standing there and rocking back and forth on his heels, occasionally taking a sip of his drink. He looks away for a moment, and you turn to look at him. Taking in the endearing swoop of his hair, the scattering of freckles and moles on the side of his pale face, the long line of his neck disappearing into the collar of his shirt. You shift your eyes slightly to the right of him, to the patchwork of vents and scaffolding in the ceiling, feigning as if youâd only been casually looking his way.
âThat reporter was a piece of work,â Oscar says once heâs drifted his attention back to you.
You roll your eyes on instinct, and groan, âTell me about it, holy shit, Osc. What an asshole. I donât know if he was just stupid or legit didnât know a single thing about me.â
âMm,â Oscar hums in agreement, âand I like how no one asked you a single question after that. Way to go guys, thatâs exactly how you show your support.â
You roll your eyes, still smiling a little at the contented feeling youâve got in your chest, âI know, right. Trust, they all got on their keyboards afterwards to wax lyrical about how deserving I am of my seat. Itâd be fuckenâ nice if they acted like it during press conferences.â
âYeaah,â he sighs, half-laugh, half-exhale, âItâs unfair.â
âFucken' right,â you gripe, tipping your head back and letting a slip of fizzy beer cascade down your throatâ the alcohol, though meagre, leaves you feeling loose, a little reckless, âIt sucks Osc. God, I just want to be respected. If I had a dick and balls Iâd be fucking killing it, dude. This is my rookie season, Iâve been scoring points every race. Except for the DNF, which was not my fault. But, fuck me, they donât give a shit.â
You squeeze your eyes shut to stave off the angry tears that are sitting behind your eyelids, threatening. When you open them Oscar is staring at you, frowning, his brown eyes huge and sparkling and sympathetic. Theyâre like a black hole you want to fall into. Your heart squeezes. Heâs soâ ugh. Quickly, your mind supplies about a hundred answers to that question: sweet, cute, nice, adorable. Something stutters in your chest and you feel your cheeks starting to grow hot. That slow-burn smile of Oscarâs starts on his face, and you watch dimples form on his cheeks.
The moment is quickly ruined by a particularly nasally Italian accent that you vaguely recognise, âYou know,â it says, clearly talking to you, âYou should make sure to watch your tone. You never know who could be listening.â
Mood thoroughly dampened, you turn to face the interruption. It turns out to be one of the numerous men on the grid who wonât shut up about you, sharing unsolicited opinions left and right. He has his arms crossed against his chest and a smug expression on his face, as if heâs just caught you doing something terribleâ instead of simply complaining about the subpar treatment youâre afforded.
Heâs not worth your time whatsoever but God youâre angry. Maybe itâs just been too much shit on top of shit today but you cannot deal reasonably with this man right nowâ and you are not afforded the luxury of not acting reasonably toward someone like this, no matter how much of a dickhead they are. You open your mouth. Close it. Open it again. Close it and bite down on your bottom lip so nothing accidentally slips out. Youâre trying to fish a semi-civil sentence out of a sea of fuck you fuck you fuck you on repeat and itâs not working.
âAre you threatening her?â Oscar asks, a dangerous lilt to his tone, and somewhere in the pulse of anger, you think this is the happiest youâve ever been to hear his voice, âBecause, I am pretty sure your team principal would not be pleased to hear that youâre going around threatening one of Mercedesâ drivers.â
He scoffs, trying to play it off, but you think you register a little bit of worry somewhere in thereâ Oscar can be threatening when he wants to be and McLaren are not exactly nobodies in this sport right now, âPlease, I am not threatening her. I am just telling her that she needs to watch her mouth.â
âRight,â Oscar nods, mouth pinching, âSure. Well, it would be our word against yours and Iâm fairly sure your team principal would believe two drivers over you right now. Especially with that history, youâve got, dude.â
A little thrill goes up your spine as his face goes white as a sheet. Oscarâs talking about the nice little list of comments heâs made that youâve reported to your team and an FIA representativeâ which youâve taken to doing every time anyone starts up a pattern of saying things about you or to you. Theyâre to cover your ass honestly, so you canât be accused of making things up if push comes to shove. Youâre sure theyâve made their way back to him and his boss; youâre glad theyâve made an impact (but perhaps not enough to stop him outright).
He sniffs, a nervous edge to his words, âI am not threatening her.â
âOkay. Apologise.â
âExcuse me?â
Oscar raises an eyebrow, âIf youâre not threatening her, apologise.â
You bite the inside of your lip and grip the neck of your near-empty beer bottle tighter. Alright, Oscar can be scary. Noted. Very much noted.
âIââ He quickly thinks better of protesting and looks at you, lips pursed in a thin angry line, âI apologise.â
He looks at Oscar, Oscar looks at you. You shrug and nod. Good enough. You donât need him to grovel, you think heâs been sufficiently humiliated already. Although, before he scampers off into the crowd at Oscarâs approval, you manage a dry, âYou think I need to watch my tone now?â
He scowls, but says, âNo,â anyway.
Then he stalks off into the throng of people.
You relax more the further that he gets away from the two of you. The tension dissipates into something warm and charged with a different kind of electricity entirely. You ignore the unease that tries to take root in your stomach and instead focus on Oscar at your side.
âThat wasââ you scrub a hand over your face, starting your sentence again, âHm.â
Oscar sigh-laughs again, âYeah, what an asshole.â
âThank you,â you say meaning it wholeheartedly, âNo oneâs done something like that for me before.â
Oscar looks down at you, frowning, he shakes his head, âItâs nothing.â
âItâs not nothing,â you answer, feeling bold as you put a hand on his bicep in an attempt to express how grateful you feel for him, for what heâd done for you, âItâs really not, Osc.â
Heâs quiet, staring at you with big brown sparkling eyes for a long long moment. A long moment in which you fantasise about reaching upward and pulling his face down to yours, feeling his lips against your own. Theyâd be soft, you thinkâ his hair would be too. You donât think about it and you resolutely ignore the tug low in your gut.
âYou deserve it,â he says eventually, loud enough that you can hear it, but not anyone else, âYou are killing it, by the way.â
You breathe a laugh, âYeah, Iâd better be.â
You squeeze gently at his bicep, feeling the sinewed muscle underneath his dress shirt. Then you let your hand drop, trailing absently down his arm as you do so. Your fingers brush his hand, and he catches yours before it's out of reach at your side. Purposefully, he threads your fingers with his, squeezing firmly and brushing his thumb tenderly over your knuckle. You feel a little lightheaded when he lets go.
You sigh, masking the out-of-breath quality of your voice, âI need another drink.â
âYeah,â Oscar breathes, âMe too, I reckon.â
