I’m rereading the part in Prince’s Gambit where Laurent gets Damen two extra weeks before they get to the border to train the troop, and now all I have in my mind is Damen and Laurent singing “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” to everyone else.

These of course are the more upbeat and catchy showstopper numbers that were often (with some exceptions) sung by the comic relief/sidekick characters and/or used in a lot of the marketing for these movies (Topsy Turvy for Huncback, Zero to Hero for Hercules, and Friend Like Me for Aladdin being the most notable examples).

🌸🗡️ It’s been ages since I really drew the character of Mulan. Much like with my drawings of Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, and Young Simba, I refer to drawings of Mulan by Mark Henn. What I find fascinating about the movie “Mulan” is the that it was the first animated movie produced primarily at Disney’s animation studio in Florida. “Lilo & Stitch” and “Brother Bear” were also produced there as well. 🐲🗡️

When my son is throwing a fit, normally I sing the Mulan song to snap him outta it… it works.
🎶Let's get down to business
To defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters
When I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man out of you🎶

I really should have investigated my complicated feelings when I first watched Disney’s Mulan (1998).

I appreciate the hornification of fictional characters as much as the next degenerate, but I do want to make one point about Shang supposedly having a bi freak out moment regarding Mulan/Ping.
His initial freak out wasn’t sexual or romantic at all. He didn’t freak out when he found out Ping was actually a girl because of any reasons of attraction. It’s because his worldview didn’t allow for women to be brothers in arms. Right before Ping passed out, Shang gave him his unconditional trust because Ping saved his life and his army. He was shocked to discover Mulan was a woman because up until that point, he didn’t believe it was even possible for women to be brave, fierce, strategic in battle, or strong. (Or swift as a coursing river, forceful as a great typhoon…) He didn’t think it was possible for a woman to earn his unconditional trust on the battlefield as an equal. That’s why he freaked out. Not because Mulan made him question his sexuality, but because she made him question his entire worldview.
(They only ended up together at the end of the movie because it’s a Disney movie and a classic comedy format.)

Madrid (pt. 3)
The tournament concluded with nary a hiccup for me, and I was soon ready to enjoy my few days of shore leave. I met up with Sam, Erdoo and Eve for a day trip to Toledo, a town outside of Madrid with heavy medieval vibes. The buildings are close-knit, the streets are narrow and cobbled, and every fifth shop has a suit of armour in the window plus enough swords to storm the nearest castle.
The streets and sights were well worth the visit, but the day will go down in infamy the memory banks for a couple of activities that – left to my own devices – I would not have gone near! Firstly, as soon as we disembarked the coach, the three ne’er-do-wells accompanying me spotted a poster that offered a zipline across the river; I didn’t want to be a party pooper straight out of the gate, but it looked to be on a scale that even I could manage (a classic Top Gear “how hard can it be?” moment) so I agreed to do it too.
When we reached the zipline itself, I realised that I’d been mistaken on the scale - if I’d been on my own, I would have said “gracias but no gracias” and walked away without a second glance, but I didn’t feel I could let the side down at the last minute, so despite my better judgement I harnessed up and got it over and done with. I don’t know exactly how far the drop was (I did my best not to look at it), but the fifteen seconds it took to whiz across didn’t whiz by quickly enough for my liking! You know that frightened cat that sounds like it’s saying “No-no-no-no”? That was me the whole way across.
After returning to Madrid and a quick freshen up, the four of us went for dinner before walking to a karaoke bar, my feeling of existential dread growing with each step. Now, although performing a solo at the Royal Albert Hall might be slightly preferable to jumping out of a plane, it still registers pretty high on the Things-I-Don’t-Want-To-Do-Richter scale; I sing well enough in the car or the shower, but that’s generally as far as it goes. Mercifully, it turned out to be karaoke in a private booth, so I was able to loosen up enough to give it a go. We were there for two hours and rattled through a host of songs – Here Comes the Sun & We Didn’t Start the Fire (without looking at the lyrics) were my personal favourites.

The following day it was just Sam and me, and after our lengthy excursions in Toledo we unanimously agreed to go at a far more leisurely pace! We met up in Retiro Park and had lunch by the pedalo lake, before grabbing a seat on the top deck of a tour bus and letting it carry us around Madrid for most of the afternoon. Stops were made for an ice-cream croissant (tasty and messy in equal measure), and then a paella in the evening, before we parted ways. Sam leaves tomorrow whereas I have one more day of freedom, but as I envisage being even less active than we were today, I’m banking on this being an appropriate conclusion to the Madrid chronicles.

So if “ I’ll make a man out of you “ from the Mulan soundtrack (correct me if I’m wrong) is the universal song for trans mascs, is “ A girl worth fighting for “ from the mulan soundtrack the Trans fem theme song?
