Finally al and Finn kiss and it’s everything I ever wanted ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

I’ve been wanting this almost as much as al and finn and reading it happen makes me happier than anything!

Since we’ve seen so much from finns POV I don’t think we’ve gotten a clear idea about how much al wanted finn this whole time. I only realized it when he went into the bathroom where finn was to give him a “clean towel” hahahah

Part of me wanted finn and al to really *do it (let that twink be destroyed hhahaha) but I know that finn is inexperienced and al doesn’t wanna pressure him and both want to take this relationship seriously— I can’t wait to see what obstacles they have to overcome next -

Vance and Terence are the biggest obstacles right now and I have no idea how that will go. With Vance, I’m sure al hates him for sending his little minions to shoplift and cause trouble hahah but seeing them interact should be tense and interesting……. After their little showdown in chapter 5 or so in the grab n go, I’m sure they’ll have a lot to say to each other

Ok with Terence, I don’t like him that much - I’m sorry but him being an absent drunk doesn’t sit well with me. I know he lost his wife but Finn and Gwen lost their mom and they deserve to have a dad that’s involved in their life. I know Terence wants finn to toughen up and his whole tough love act is a way of trying to protect Finn but still, there are other ways to be there for Finn. The beating he gave Finn still makes my heart ache ……..

I’m lowkey wanting Al to pummel Terence and proclaim his place as Finn’s new caretaker and father figure but that’s just me hahahha —- I do wonder how they’ll interact though ? Like Terence would be confronting and angry probably but Al might either be calm or he might be kind of manipulative and conniving because he does have a darker side ….

Gwen and Robin and max ? Oooh I can’t wait to see their reactions !

I think Gwen was already suspicious of al because she saw the way he kept looking at our precious finney in the first chapter. Hearing that al and finn are together will def make her upset and she’ll probably won’t cover for him if she finds out …… will she try to talk finn out of it ?

Max is such a loveable goofball and I think he cares very much for his brother but I’m kind of thinking that he’d show a firm position against Al and Finn and kind of think his brother was taking advantage of an impressionable young boy with no father figure. He might butt heads with Al too and that’s gonna be so interesting!!!

a lot of other readers have been asking for a chapter/segment written from al’s p.o.v., too, and i think it’s an absolutely brilliant idea! i’ve already formulated quite a few segments from his p.o.v. and i think it’ll be really interesting to see the nature of his feelings toward finney; especially since he is such a morally ambiguous character. and that “clean towel” move he pulled lordddd... as nice as he is and as much as he loves his boy, he can be so creepy lmao. but we all love him for it.

i knowwww, but as tempted as i am to delve straight into the smutty goodness, i have to ensure i maintain proper characterisation and an element of realism. 😩 al is absolutely feral for finney, but he has to try his hardest to suppress it so as not to overwhelm the boy or accidentally scare him off. he’s finney’s first in all matters romantic, so he’ll really take the time to teach finney how to feel good and make him feel good at a pace the boy is comfortable with.

you’re absolutely right, vance and terrence are their biggest obstacles right now. they’re both so temperamental, too, so finney and al will have to be really careful about the way they go about navigating their way out of such a tricky situation. i’ll say this on the matter, though—we definitely haven’t seen the last of vance. i can say that with indisputable certainty. and he will interact with al in a chapter or two if everything goes to plan, so their strained relationship will be sorely emphasised. they hate each other’s guts, just like you said. but i have to agree with you, it just makes their interactions/scenes together so much more interesting and tense. who doesn’t love a bit of drama haha?

terrence is a very complex and layered character, much like the others. we know what he’s doing is wrong, he knows what he’s doing is wrong, and yet he can’t seem to escape this constant loop of trying to love and protect his children but ending up abusing them instead. it’s the cycle of abuse. he means well (most of the time), but i’m with you on this one. it’s absolutely no excuse to behave the way he does, or to treat his children the way he does. by trying to protect finney and forcing him to suppress certain elements of his sexuality, he’s inadvertently driven him straight into the arms of a man older than him.

oh, don’t you worry. al hasn’t forgotten about the beating his boy had to endure...

i think the way he’ll go about resolving the issue with terrence will be the biggest headfuck. i’ve seen a lot of people theorise and try to guess what he’ll do or how he’ll handle it (which i absolutely love; i will never shut up about how much i frickin’ love getting comments/asks theorising what’s gonna happen next or how al will deal with terrence) but the way he actually does deal with it is so much more... i don’t wanna necessarily say ‘twisted’, but i will say weird. then again, al’s a weird guy, so it’s to be expected. in regards to the darker elements of his character, once again, you’re right on the money. he will absolutely utilise manipulation as a tactic to combat vance and terrence...

yep! gwen has already clocked the weirdo magician who kept staring at her brother at susie’s party, so she won’t be so easily assuaged. being a very intense and combative character, she won’t be too happy and her reaction has the potential to be quite intense, which is absolutely fair. she loves her brother beyond reason, beyond words, and would do absolutely anything to protect him.

there’s really no way of telling how he’ll find out about finney and al, nor how he’ll react. much like gwen, though, he’s a very intense character, so his reaction is bound to be ruthless. yikes. there’s a 99.99% chance he’ll start swinging at al, no questions asked hahahaha. he isn’t aware of finney’s sexual orientation as of yet, no. he might have slight suspicions, but it’s not something they’ve discussed in terrible depth. finney is so deep in the closet he might as well have stumbled into narnia lmao.

yesssssss omg max is such a loveable goofball, i wanna put him in my pocket. he has a complicated relationship with al due to their childhood (which i’ll delve into a little more in future chapters) but ultimately, they love and care about each other very much. that’s why it’s so hard for him to come to terms with the fact that his brother might be engaging in inappropriate behaviour and an entirely illegal/immoral relationship with a 16/17-year-old boy. he’s very conflicted about it. it is, most understandably, a great source of discomfort for him.

I'm a stay at home mum to my beautiful little man, he's autistic so it can be hard sometimes as he's non verbal and it doesn't help that I have literally no mum friends to talk to or meet up with. It can feel pretty lonely sometimes.

I've recently (since s4) came back to tumblr but I used to LIVE here back in my Shadowhunter days (books, TV and film) and before that in my very multi fandom teen days!

I kind of forgot what it was like to have a hyperfixation until Eddie appeared on my screen. I've been so tied up in being a mum and trying to find myself again that I've realised I've not had a proper hyperfixation in such a long time! I have had mini ones but not to this level in years 😂

Hmm a little more about me. I love reading but tend to either read like 8 books in a month or none for 3 years. I watch a LOT of TV, a few of my favourites are ST (obviously), The Walking Dead, Gilmore Girls and Buffy. Moviewise I'm into a lot of different types, my main favourites are LOTR/Hobbit, Labyrinth, Soldier's Girl (highly recommend but it will break your heart and not mend it) and Muppet's Christmas Carol.

I also write. I'm finally getting back into writing. I used to write a lot but in recent years it's been a struggle. I currently have an ongoing Eddie x Reader series, plus a lot of plot bunnies waiting to be written 😂 and also a novel I'm hoping to write one day!

Okay I've rambled a lot now. That's one last thing to know about me. I'm a rambler. Or I don't reply for literally ages. There's no real in-between 😂

Chapter 5

So this is going to be my attempt to summarize part 1 of the beginning part of chapter 5 (episode 1 to 21) of twisted wonderland.

Again, spoiler alert since I’m about to write out everything that happened, and I apologize for my grammar and horrible French in advance.

 You heard someone singing -> it was the scenes from snow white when the evil queen asks the mirror on the wall and snow white singing into the well  -> player choice: a beautiful women was watching from the window…/ I felt like I’ve meet that beautiful person before… -> you woke up from dream -> in the main street, you meet up with Ace and Deuce -> after seeing the statue you realized you’ve seen them in your dreams before

In classroom -> Ace felt it wasn’t weird to have dreams like that when you see those statues everyday -> you mentioned about in your dream “mickey” appeared in the mirror -> Ace and Deuce never heard of that name before -> Ace suggest to take a photo of it with the “ghost camera” you got from Crowley since it can even take pictures of ghosts

Crewel showed up and explained about “nationwide sorcerer training school culture festival” -> it’s a 2 day event with representative students from all the sorcerer training school, a festival with speeches and debates all about magic related music & art topics -> for NRC, all the 4th year students will be send all across country for internship and research study -> they will all come back on that day to share their experience and result -> end of the homeroom -> fight Crewel for the defense magic class

In the dorm leader meeting -> Malleus is not there again -> Lilia mentions how he couldn’t find Malleus anymore after class so he’s here instead -> Idia questions if Malleus is missing meetings on purpose -> Lilia talked about how fairies feels time different from humans, and how Malleus have some troublesome karma on him as well

The meeting starts -> Riddle started reporting everything about the event -> but the “vocal & dance championship” has surprising amount of media focused on it -> Riddle was surprised since he thought it was just a chorus competition -> because of the time change and consideration for different types of music, now it includes singing, dancing, and performance -> and because of how popular it got, it becomes one chance for students to professionally debut -> and now it’s getting extra notice because the famous influencer Vil and Neige are in it -> Lilia commented how Neige is getting really popular online and on TV -> Idia surprised that people in Diasomnia actually go online -> Lilia “kuhuhu, of course, we are still just students in high school, we watch dramas and play games.” -> Crowley “Vila and Neige, 2 world known famous celebrity are going to appear in VDC, it won’t be an exaggeration to call it the highest degree of attention we are going to get in this event.” -> Crowley ask Riddle to make preparation in case of troubles -> Azul offered to help since he learned all about it from magic shift event -> Leona “hey octopus bastard… do you want your flappy tongue to turn into dried food or what?” -> Azul “oh my how scary” -> Riddle refused Azul’s help since he don’t want Azul ask for something later -> Kalim “just tell us if something is bothering you, we’ll help you anytime.”

-> Kalim “I can’t wait for the day of festival~!” ->  Idia “sign~~~… the popular guys just looks so happy everyday. I had to think about the day to announce our research result… if I just step on stage, everyone would be like ‘hey isn’t his hair burning?’ ‘could he be Shroud family’s…’ ‘what kind of dark research is he doing?’ aah I can’t… for person like me to do a speech on stage is just challenge level EX.” -> Riddle mentioned how the rules said student have to go on stage themselves and offer to train Idia for speech after school -> Idia said he’ll manage something himself (whispering) “I really don’t wanna have a farming event with demonic trainer Riddle.” -> end of meeting

In Vil’s room -> Vil “Mira, Mira” -> Mira “what can I help you with?” -> Vil “who is the fairest of them all right now?” -> Mira “the account with the most mention of fair in web currently is… Neige.” -> Vil “Neige…! Finally… this time have arrived.” -> Mira “sorry, I couldn’t quite hear you. Could you please repeat what you said?”

Few days later in cafeteria -> Ace, Deuce, Grim, and you saw the poster for the VDC audition -> the reward for wining the championship is 5 million Madollar to spilt among the members -> Crowley popped up and explained many corporation sponsored this event -> Grim wanted to join for the money so he can buy tuna cans

The song for audition is “piece of my world” -> Ace wanted to try so if he got accepted he don’t need to help set up the places anymore -> Deuce wanted the reward money to help his family -> but he never did singing or dancing before so he didn’t want to join ->

In courtyard you heard someone singing beautifully -> you saw Epel ->Deuce remembered the time he bumped into Epel last chapter -> He asked Epel why is he practice singing here -> it was because Vil told Epel to practice singing to the well so Epel can hear his voice clearly -> Deuce “does Pomefiore have some rules where you have to be good at singing?” -> it was because Epel has to take the audition for VDC and practice for a more lovely voice -> Epel (whisper) “event like that should just disappear…” -> “oh my Epel, are you skipping practice and talking with pigeons now?” -> it was Vil -> Grim “that guy’s leg looks like it’s 1 meter longer than MC’s!” -> Vil “there’s only 2 month left till VDC, Epel have no times play with muddy potatoes like you people.” -> “Epel, you too, if this keep going on you won’t be able to become the ‘red poisoned apple’ let’s go.” -> Epel “…But I actully don’t!” -> Vil “did you forgot the promise with me? Just come here already.” -> Ace and Grim was pretty mad and wanted to fight -> Vil “It’s not bad for a walk after meal. Come at me, I’ll make you into mashed potato.” -> fight time -> you are beat up by Vil -> and he only gives you 5/100 for the fight since you lacked the beauty when fighting -> Epel has to go back with Vil and Vil mentioned how it ends up like this because Epel skipped practice in break

The next day -> Deuce decided to try the audition -> so if they are accepted, Epel might got eliminated and don’t need to practice anymore -> Deuce “as a honor student, I can’t just watch him being forced into the things he don’t like.” -> Ace “I don’t think it’s very honor student of you to call yourself honor student.” -> dance practice time

Kalim and Jamil showed up practice for audition too -> Kalim “honestly you guys are pretty bad at this, you look like a panicked elephant trying to stand on 2 legs! Ahhaha!” -> Deuce “man this really hurts when he’s not even try to be mean.” -> Ace asked Jamil to teach them how to dance -> Kalim “oh sure! Jamil is really good at singing.” -> Jamil “why are you replying for me! … well it is also review for me when I’m teaching someone, fine I’ll do it.” -> teaching time -> Kalim “hey, how about we practice together tomorrow too? Jamil is really good at singing, we’ll show you.” -> Jamil “! You just decided that yourself too…!” -> Kalim “it’ll be fine, besides isn’t it more fun when you have more people for dancing, singing, or partying?” -> Jamil “fine, just don’t expect me to be so kind.” -> Jamil “for now, let’s just clean up, take some mops from the storage room -> Deuce, Ace, Kalim “okay.” -> Jamil “Kalim, you don’t have to do it… sigh.”

Azul showed up -> Grim mentioned how Jamil’s evil plan was streamed worldwide last chapter.” -> Azul “why do you think the merciful me would end my classmate societal life like that?” -> Jamil “…you would.” -> that day Azul was just on phone with Jade -> Azul “different from Leona, I don’t have an interest to beat down someone more than necessary, besides it’s a secret that I’ve finally got, I won’t do anything to make the price fall like that.” -> Jamil “hate to say it, but thanks to Azul’s mercifulness, my parents and Asim family didn’t know the real reason I overblot. But the dorm students…”

Flashback -> Scarabia students questioned why Kalim don’t change the vice dorm leader after what happened

-> Kalim “are you guys worried about me? Thank you! But… he was not the only one wrong this time, I’m also at fault. Besides, is there anyone in Scarabia that have not received help from Jamil?” -> student “that, that is true… if there’s something going wrong we would always just ask him…” -> Kalim “I know right? He is an excellent vice dorm leader. A lot better than me, the dorm leader. His judgements might be clouded back then, but he is still great at his work. He did try to expel me by manipulating you guys but… up till that incident, he has never hurt me even once before. He has many chances to do other much more horrible things to me, but he didn’t. Not once, in 17 years. I won’t call him a good guy but… it’s hard to explain but would you please give us more times?” -> students “…if that’s what you said so…” -> Jamil “…”  -> end of flashback -> Jamil “the chance I had for holiday was once in a lifetime, thought my life would be over if I failed, but in the end it didn’t change that much… surely something to be ‘grateful’ for. So unless I’m fired by Kalim, I’ll continue to serve him. And I’ll continue to show everyone how useful I am.” -> Grim “Jamil… your character really changed a lot after the holiday.” -> Azul “if you are fired by Kalim, Octavinelle will always welcome people like you with open arms.” -> Jamil “thank you for the offer, but no matter what happened I would never go to Octavinelle.” -> Kalim “Hey you guys~ if we don’t head out soon we are gonna be late for class!”

3 days later -> everyone is getting better at dancing and singing -> Jamil reminded them to sign up for audition with Rook in class 3-A -> Grim saw Leona and called out to him -> Leona: angry lion noises -> Grim asked where is Rook Hunt -> Leona “why are you trying to find that weird guy.” -> Rook suddenly popped up from behind -> Rook “hahaha, did I surprised you? Pardon. Conceal my footstep sound was a habit I had. I am Rook Hunt. The hunter of love that set his life theme as looking for beauty, helping beauty.” -> Leona “tsk, there it is, that weird guy.” -> Rook asked where is monsieur dandelion -> Leona “no way we are together 24/7, just take those herbivores and go.” -> Deuce questioned who is monsieur dandelion -> it was Ruggie -> the reason why Rook calls him that is because last spring, Rook saw Ruggie picking dandelion in the sports field. Ruggie plans to eat those since his budget is a little tight this month -> so Rook calls him monsieur dandelion out of respect -> Leona “that guy… is he really fine with eating everything that’s not rotten? He didn’t make me eat dandelions too, right…?” -> Rook “non non, it’s not poison, it’s not good to be picky like that lord lion.” -> Ace brought up the audition for VDC, we almost forgot about that because of what happened -> Rook “I apologize, so you guys are, human species Ace Trappola, height 172cm, from class 1-A with student number 25. Human species Deuce Spade, height 173cm, from the same class 1-A with student number 24. And human species MC with demon beast species Grim, height 70cm. right?”

-> Deuce “how did you know our class and student number!?” -> Ace “and even height too!?” -> Rook “huhuhu. As a hunter, I have to at least know the species and heights about the students.” -> there’s no need to write anything to sign up, you only need to show up to the audition 3 days later in Pomefiore’s ballroom -> Rook ask why don’t Leona try for the auditions too -> Leona “who would go to a game event like that, besides, that annoying Vil is also there. I would never go.” -> Rook “the Vil with the beauty of metropolis, and Leona kun with the beauty of wilderness. If both of you dances and sings together it would definitely be beautiful. The competition between different types of beauty, it’s just tres bien!” -> Leona “this guy really doesn’t listen to other people at all…”

3 days later -> in Pomrfiore dorm lounge, you saw around 50 students who’s also trying for audition -> Cater was also one of it -> since he wanted to go to the event with the famous celebrity Vil -> Ace “isn’t that reason a little too light hearted?” -> Cater “really? I thought everyone is like that, I mean look.”

-> pointed at Ruggie who’s clearly here for money -> Lilia popped up again -> you recognized him as the person who handed you the holiday card -> Grim “he wasn’t the sender?” -> Lilia “the initials are different from mine right?” -> Lilia is here since he’s in light music club and it just makes sense for him to try -> he tried to invite Malleus too but he said he don’t want it to become the exhibition of some kind so he refused -> Lilia “that guy is kind of shy” -> Cater “I feels like that’s a little bit different from shy…” -> Lilia asked why didn’t Cater brought Trey along -> Cater tried but Trey has to help Riddle with all the works

they saw Ortho by himself for audition too and was surprised -> Ace commented on how Ortho looks like an elementary school student -> Cater said Ortho is accepted into this school with Idia, and they always take classes together -> Grim “how much of a brothercon is Idia…” ->Ortho “don’t talk bad on my brother!” -> Ortho explained how everything was approved by the principals, and is not like Idia brought him just because he’s lonely by himself -> Cater “sorry sorry, we kinda got to excited while talking about it since the Shroud brother is like the 7 mysteries of this school.” -> Ortho “I want to apologize for getting too upset as well, I just don’t want you to misunderstand my brother…” -> Cater asked if Ortho is also here for audition -> flashback -> basically Idia made a software with his voice to read out everything he typed -> for the speech since he just can’t talk in front of everyone -> but Idia also got pretty interested in the sound editing world -> Idia “since virtual idol is getting popular, should I put vocal synthesizer in Ortho too?” -> Ortho “sounds fun! I wanted to sing too.” ->Idia “alright~ let big brother handle everything.” -> so to test how far the vocal synthesizer can go, Ortho is here to take the audition -> Ace was surprised that they can just make singing sounds from programs -> Cater said those got quite popular and he likes it too, and wanted to show Grim a video of it -> there was an ad

Neige is promoting in the ad -> Cater mentioned how popular he is getting -> Vil, Rook, and Epel kicked in with sparkling effects -> Vil started introducing himself and explains how he will be the producer for the members appears in VDC

Auditions starts -> Ruggie sung and danced

-> Rook “monsieur dandelion. Such a light step and bright smile. With manliness and loveliness combined perfectly. Beaute! 100 points!” -> Vil “his way of moving isn’t bad, but his dancing and singing is still messy… next!”

Cater -> Rook “monsieur magcam. Your voice sounds just like the elegant sparkling diamond! I wanted to listen to it forever. Beaute! 100 points!” -> Vil “singing and dancing wasn’t bad, but I can’t feel any passions… next!”

Oh man it tooks me a whole entire day to do this… and to think this is just like part a of part1. The chapters are getting so much longer…

I Honestly felt like I missed up half of Rook’s nicknames since I don’t know French at all, basically got everything from google so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Also, Rook’s nickname for Epel is kinda weird, he call Epel hime ringo which directly translate to princess apple, but it is also a type of apple. In English it’s called crabapple, which kind of feels different then the Japanese text.

Can I just say I love the fact that we can fight Crewel now? And I just love how he call us zasshu while fighting, it probably referenced to like mixed blood dogs and all but it only reminds me of Gilgamesh lol.

🌟 what is something you’ve been proud of recently?

i'd say probably making it this far in life AHHAHA not in a kind of "oh boy Life" way but more in a... "man i've really developed as my own person and i'm happy with it" way!

things have gotten a lot better, and i'm proud that i've been resilient through the years. i've also allowed/accepted myself to progress in many different ways, like with my emotional capacity and processing my emotions - or communicating with others in social situations that would turn me into a fucking chair

i know i sent an ask about it already but wheW. the sheer genius that is this chapter. i literally had to take a few days to just collect my very scattered thoughts because holy shit rain. it’s AMAZING

and there are two parts that stick out to me the most (but i feel like u meant it that way lol) and is it no surprise that the two scenes that now live in my head rent free are the scenes where they put themselves directly in harm’s way to protect the other?? to cite a specific part though, this part right here:

and the way you could just feel the desperation in yoongi to save her, to keep her from ever getting hurt, ma’am i am speechless😭😭😭

Midsommar Review

The way our world works these days, if somebody makes something, and then that thing makes money, they are strongly incentivized to try to do it again.

I am strongly biased against second projects. With a few exceptions, since the dawn of the internet, informational efficiency, and ease of consumption of media, these second projects are usually rushed, unworthy, too risky, too safe, typically fail to leverage the prior success in any useful way and just in general, are not usually good.

So, I went into Midsommar with low expectations, creating the conditions for one of my very favorite things: this obstacle being absolutely annihilated.

Everything that usually works against second projects worked in favor of Midsommar: The director truly showed up in terms of effort, pushing extremely hard to take a standard genre and build it into something he could relate to personally and in doing so creates a really unique and entirely original second project. He takes a premise that has been done- rural horror/exploitation- but builds it around an personal emotional event. The director & producers took bigger risks (ahhaha what do you even market this thing as? horror obviously, but as I will get into, it isn’t really a horror movie in the jump scary way- more of a texas chainsaw massacre type horror), but didn’t squander our attention or lean on prior success in any way. The director created a film with what I feel is an extremely clear and resonant emotional core, makes no compromises in presenting it, asks everything of the cast in being authentic on that presentation, and them responding to that call, lead by an incredible performance from English actor Florence Pugh. 

This was a central feature to Hereditary- this emotion- and its presentation by the cast- and it is again present in Midsommar and is the thing that keeps us on the edge of our seats. The opening scene of this film, roughly 20-30 minutes prior to opening credits- is going to go down I think as one of the best openings of the 2010s. Absolutely haunting, horrifying, and flawlessly executed in terms of filmmaking, it sets the emotional tone of the film with what you expect initially to be grief, partially because that was the central theme of Hereditary.

However, the protagonist Dani, moves on past her grief...pretty god damned well, if you ask me, but is marked by it... taking us to the true emotional core of the film, which is rejection. And I mean a specific kind of rejection- not when somebody refuses to go on a date with you. Not when you date somebody for a few dates and then that fails to turn into a relationship, but the one after that- rejection from the type of relationship many of us encountered as our first serious one, where we are brought together with our partner by the strong forces of young infatuation, and then are, perhaps 1-3 years after that, torn apart by the stronger force of reality and adulthood.

That is what the opening of the movie is- it’s reality. If you are with somebody long enough, eventually something very real is going to happen in their life, or your life. For me personally, in a prior relationship, it was my partner losing a parent. And you might be thinking, wow, that is a little too real- no wonder you connected with this film. And that is one of the things that you get from building yourself into your writing, as this director has in both of his features- is you get the opportunity to connect with people on a truly visceral level.

While rural people are chopping up city folk (blunt force trauma seems to be the murder method of choice amongst the Hagra) , the film keeps returning to some of the important touchstones of this emotion, which is also a process: isolation, panicked feelings of inadequacy, infidelity, new people, deep guilt, final acceptance, and then, moving on.

The film making is outstanding, if perhaps a bit too raw and unedited towards the second and third acts. The movie is beautiful, the score is even better than Hereditary, based strongly on romantic string style harmonics, think Ralph von Williams or Gustav Mahler. The beauty of the film as well as the comic relief provided by a great cast of university students and creepy swedish commune members forms a great counter-force to the ultimately very depressing emotional core of going through a breakup as somebody with extreme mental challenges. Dueling graduate anthropology students, people’s faces falling off, bear suits, funny drug trips (I counted 3 different entheogens used), keep you chuckling a little bit through the brutality.

These jokes not only provide needed comic relief, but also help underscore the indifference of modern life- something I’ll get back to at the very end.

Star Florence Pugh absolutely nails the depressed/anxious about-to-be-ex girlfriend, lovable, complicated, scary, establishing herself as my new favorite “Smart Scream Queen” in the tradition of Mary Elizabeth Winstead or Maika Monroe. The final act of the film is the final act of the breakup- the boyfriend is gone for good, and the new boyfriend is substantially worse- but one scene in particular, I have to talk about in greater detail, because it is one of the most powerful shots I’ve ever seen. The Hagra, the rural clan/cult in the film, have a habit of the group empathizing with an individual member with ... “vocalizations” and dance-like trance movements. If, say for example, a member of the clan were to jump off a cliff and not die instantly, instead writhing on the ground in pain,the community pantomimes writhing around in pain, showing that they, as a collective, feel their pain too.

What draws people into cults? What do people who join cults have in common? Pain. Isolation. Fear. Loneliness. Well, the worst cults manufacture their own misery and then provide the solution to that, which is being a member of the cult and sacrificing your life for it. The Hagra definitely do this to Dani, so they are far from being virtuous, despite what comes next.

After manufacturing a climax of personal shame and fear and isolation and inadequacy in Dani, they come together to heal her pain. As Dani collapses and cries in the throes of a severe anxiety attack, rather than stand with crossed arms or disgust or calling the police or the crazy wagon, as people normally do in such a position-

They join her. The young women of the cult get on their knees, cry, gasp, sob- and put her hands on her, and as this happens, she looks up and sees that she is not alone. In their quest to imitate her, they lift her up and bring her into the community.

Ultimately, this establishes the cult as Dani’s rebound boyfriend yes, but it also connects the concept of a rural murder cult, which is pretty standard horror fare, with the emotional core of the film (rejection), and also gives us a pretty good idea of why the rural murder cults exist in the first place, which is as a reaction to the cold impersonality and rejection of modern mainstream human existence. Human beings are not a product to be rejected. Human relationships are not something you acquire, use, and then throw away.

If nothing else, cults appreciate that fact. Everybody is important. Everybody’s pain and loneliness matters.

1st, my workplace (actually not a ‘real’ workplace but an internship space) are pretty much not okay..for me, i think? The surroundings are fine but the isolation and the boredom and the mind that is inside the four corners of the office, if i have to descirbe the color..its violet that has a bit of yellow. Im not comfortable, it’s still not properly arranged just like their thoughts and words, I am also unmotivated to go inside, like if I were to choose I would like to back out.. but that is impossible. Though I would really appreciate if they appreciate my time, my efforts, my vibes, my silence, my solemnity, my point of views, my decisions and my being. Because it feels like I am trying to fit in. Also the chosen mate for me, is idunno what to describe.. at first I admit it was all fine, and then there was a moment that it has to go beyond the boundaries.. hello we just met and we are not tha close, periodt. Don’t talk trash about me, talk back behind me, saying things behind me, hello again. I didn’t remember when did I became bad to you, and now you’re acting like a victim here and there.. what is it really your plaaan,? Huh. I’m becoming more and more conscious as the day become, Im like poker face when we cross fates, the nursing guy, which I noticed since 2015 in our old school is thereeee and I really would want to stick to the rumor that he’s gay, and Im very fine with it since I adore and love gays <3 He is so attractive even when he’s queuing in the cafeteria, I really would notice him. He has that charm that anyone can accept and the presence that unable to resist. He didn’t call me ‘ate’ which he should have,, ahhaha and last sem in our class,he was sitting behind me and it makes me reallly happy and conscious at the same time, But I decided during semi finals to sit at the very back of the room (since i got an alas card to sit in the 1st row because of my poorest eyesight, nag duol na nuon mig bangko imbis alphabetically arrange ang seats) so i sat in the back, and the entire sesions i was just looking at him,admiring him, and hahaha there was a time when he is so happy because he answers the questions of our teacher.. he wAs so cute,until now ofc. episode 6:

- oh hey this ep actually takes off where the previous one left off i like that. Heck yeah

- i like the style, and sometimes the art gets kinda rough which is fine in that "the action scenes look pretty so this is acceptable budget balance"-way,  but sometimes the faces are so thin it's kinda terrifying??

- Elizabeth's design is the first one i dislike BUT since she's a shady lady i will accept it. Like boobs out is not a look for an engineer, but it's a look for someone trying to mislead someone else. I just don't think that kind of design ever really looks nice... I can't list examples from the top of my head, but I feel like I've seen similar designs - They're always supposed to be pretty dresses but then they get designed by people who have zero sensibility for what a pretty dress actually _is_? Like slapping on some ribbons isn't instantly gonna make it look good. IM SORRY THIS IS SUCH AN ANIME PET PEEVE OF MINE

episode 7: - I really don't know what this story is doing in this scene with these sex workers. Like they're treated nicely and the person who hired them for Vash is talking to them like normal people and it's a rather unsexy convo which I really like. I just don't understand why Vash, who takes 0.01 seconds to be attracted to cute women usually, pretends to be asleep. Like it'd make sense if he was in love with someone and the narrative wanted to be all "oh no i can't cheat on this person i like" or it makes sense if it was all slutshamey and it wanted to be all "oh no gross women can't sleep with many people for MONEy no no i can't participate in that" but it's ..... none of those things. It's funny because the entire show is about Vash doing dumb shit nobody gets, and I trip over this one scene where for once that isn't the point ahhaha.

- There's something i always really like about religion surviving the apocalypse. Like in this case of Christianity, you have the concept of the rapture right? And I really like the idea where like if the world ended and you could assume you got left behind by your god, you won't just abandon your faith like that. Regardless of which faith that is.

Okay though what I ideally wanted was something of an overarching storyline and what i got was not only angsty implications of exactly that, but also a story that took up two eps & continuity in where we're actually at, so I'm pleased.

As the youngest child who has overprotective sisters and enjoys karate, I relate to Aelia so much. Is there anything you could reveal about her? What are her powers going to be (please make her super powerful I live for deadly fairy princesses)? What's she like? Does she have a lot of hobbies? What's her love life like (apart from Sayara ofc did I mention even though I don't know them I love her and Sayara)? What's her arc in the series going to be about? No need to apologize for questions! I am ALWAYS down to talk about Aelia Ravenhart, I too adore her. Unfortunately, I can’t get too deep into her destiny here, since it’s absolutely LOADED with spoilers. She’s a character who sort of embodies the world and plot in a meta sense--while she’s not canonically a cosmic keystone or anything heavy like that, I do deliberately use her to represent the state of the world in a lot of ways. The stuff that happens to her is directly related to the stuff that’s happening to Feilan, and her personal arc and trials are deliberate parallels to the way the world changes around her and the other leads. Her magic is a key example of this... I’ll throw you some crumbs, though, she does become super powerful. Her powers are also very unique in both nature and application, she has a notably rare skillset and she uses it mixed with her martial arts in a way that’s not seen anywhere else in the world of the story. She’s gotta go through hell to earn that magic, and she doesn’t have anything remarkable until book 4, but when she gets it she gets a lot of it. 

Her personal arc is about coming to a place of comfort with herself, and her relationship to her family. It’s close to a classic coming-of-age storyline. She starts out as this very gung-ho rebellious kid, and has to grow into someone who can handle responsibility without losing herself! She also has to figure out how to deal with her sisters. Aelia’s the most mentally stable of the Ravenharts, but she’s constantly exhausted dealing with the twins. Violet is always angry, Lavender is so depressed that she doesn’t seem to have a personality sometimes, and Aelia has to live with this and keep it from weighing too hard on her. It’s a lot of trouble. Plus Violet has this really toxic mentality that there’s nothing she can do about her own problems, and so she needs to be “saved” from her angst by external forces (aka her sisters). “Take care of myself? Shower unprompted? Actually go to the therapists at the national hospital, which are the best in the world, who could help me cope with this? ahhaha what’s that neurotypical bullshit.” that kind of thing. This fucks with Elli’s head for obvious reasons. She just wants to be herself, you know? But it feels like she’s not allowed to, because the twins have things so much worse, and they won’t stop reminding her about it.  

She hates being forced to sit down and deal with other people’s depression trauma in general--they’re all traumatized here, but since Aelia is (relatively) good at coping, nobody notices unless she bashes them in the face with it. She won’t do that, because she’s watched Violet do it enough to know it’s an awful thing to do to somebody. At first, she straight up tries to ignore the twins’ problems and talk reason to them. She doesn’t want to hear about it. Her character development pushes her towards accepting that no, she doesn’t have to fix her family, but she should at least show them a little pity. She has to move on from her obsession with how her family suffocates her, and strike a balance between tradition and transformation. It’s not a coincidence that she’s symbolically tied to lightning, my personal symbol of rebirth through destruction--that’s what Aelia needs to represent. She needs to find it in herself to destroy some of her own status quo, and she needs to find it in herself to let her relationship with her family and their traditions be reborn instead of just fading into the void. 

Aelia serves as a vessel for the series theme as a whole. Feilan is about rejuvenation and rebirth, the story of a stagnant country in a stagnant world that’s too afraid of losing something to move forward and build something new--until the algae fills the pond and chokes it out and something must be done. Elli carries the shift. She’s frustrated with the traditions of her family, she’s frustrated with the traditions of her country, she’s frustrated in all those ways that teenagers are when we start to notice that we live in a broken world. She’s not sure what to do about it yet, but she’s ready to burn things down if that’s what it takes. Sayara drives the plot, Aelia embodies it. 

I wouldn’t say she has that many hobbies, honestly, other than the ones I’ve mentioned in the WIP page. Which I guess isn’t on this blog, but on my writing one. She’s a princess in a country whose royals are expected to be politically active and occupied, so she spends most of her time learning how to move through social circles and deal with the day-to-day of being a VIP. She will probably never inherit, since she’s behind Violet and Lavender in the succession and Violet would rather die, but she’s still expected to marry into higher nobility eventually and be an executive leader type. When she’s not in tutoring lessons, she’s probably practicing martial arts or music. They help her calm down. 

Romance-wise, she doesn’t have much of a love life before the series. She’s had crushes, but they haven’t gone anywhere...  At the beginning of book 1 she’s only just turned 14, and it’s considered inappropriate to start pursuing romances before you’re 14 or 15, especially for nobility. She’s great at slick pickup lines but has had very few chances to use them, and if someone actually responded favorably she’d panic and not know what to do. That’d be super cute for an AU Tuesday thing where Sayara has working observation skills. She’s definitely had crushes on a couple classmates, but nothing that lasted--being a princess makes the power dynamics weird, and makes approaching her very intimidating for someone who’s not on her level. (Also, if anyone tried to date Aelia, Violet would kill them. This takes the intimidation up to 11.) Once she does meet Sayara, she gets a crush pretty quickly and stops paying attention to anyone else. Unfortunately for her, Sayara’s too heartblind to notice anything. I kid you not, there is a scene in book 3 where they dance together and call each other beautiful and almost kiss, and even THAT does not get Sayara’s attention as a potential romantic approach. She’s just like “oh Aelia my greatest friend” and Aelia dies on the inside. One of my greatest fears with these books is that I’ll be accused of queerbaiting somehow because Aelia’s constantly flirting and it doesn’t go anywhere, but Sayara’s just so goddamn oblivious and focused on everything else that it takes the entire massive spoiler drama of book 3 for her to figure out Elli liked her. She is an ex-self insert, after all. 

I wanna add a side note re: that romance here, since it came up, just because it’s a hotbutton topic--I do have an out-of-story reason for Sayara being a dumbass, and it’s because I don’t want to drive in any problematic Angsty Gay tropes by having them get together too early. There are a few different situations in book 3 that would become some really bad tropes if the gals were a couple at that point--everyone in this series goes through a lot of awful stuff, Aelia especially, and I don’t want even the slightest implication that any of it might be happening because of a gay romance. That would be objectively worse than teasing. They’ll get together in book 4 and it’ll be glorious and dramatic and cute as hell, but until then, they can stay just friends and angst as just friends. This is also a fair warning for you... Aelia goes through A LOT. I promise you everyone gets a happy ending eventually, but before that can happen, there’s a significant amount of pain and hard work involved. 

Absolutely feel free to ask more questions, though! I do love my fairies, and I need to develop Aelia better. She’s skirting the manic pixie dream girl line right now in a way that is the polar opposite of what I want out of her character.

AHHAHA just block me if you don’t agree with me fr. I almost don’t want to respond to you because I feel like if you care about this enough to come into my inbox you’ve already made up your mind about me, but let me attempt to add some nuance to my half hurried thoughtless attempt in the tags.

I will maintain that demisexual isn’t “real” as a standalone identity - you can’t be just demisexual - there inherently has to be a qualifier of what gender(s) if any you’re attracted to, because the word implies sexual attraction to someone/type of person, and another word/identity is usually used to clarify i.e. demisexual homoromantic, demisexual lesbian, etc.

The bi/pan divide is basically interchangeable to me, as in a science research purposes way - both terms mean attraction to multiple genders, although the specific nuance is different for both, and although there are generally accepted differences of what the difference between identifying as pan vs. bi means, from my experience talking to people it’s generally a very personal decision and doesn’t always follow easy rules. I personally identify as bi because my attraction to different genders differs based on the gender, and I view pan as attraction regardless of gender. However, I know that isn’t everyone’s experience, and I would never take someone’s choice on how to identify away from them. By referencing them as basically the same, what I mean is that the B in LGBT also includes pan folks (if they want to be under that umbrella).

Asexual is tricky for me - asexual is similar to demisexual in that it’s an add on before something else - asexual homoromantic, asexual biromantic. Mostly this is because I’ve seen some aces identify in this way. You can be a cishet ace - although I think i’ll expand that to cisgender asexual heteroromantic to make my point. As far as I understand asexual it just means no sexual attraction/interest in sex, not necessarily lack of romantic interest at all - although I know it’s different for everyone. However, because of the fact you can theoretically have attraction (romantic) to different/same or multiple genders as an asexual makes it so aces aren’t inherently gay or trans.

For me there’s a difference between LGBT and LGBTQAI+ in a way that there’s a difference between the gay and trans communities - there’s a lot of overlap but at a certain level they’re not the same. Although there are a lot of similar struggles, the truth of the matter is we don’t face oppression or discrimination in the same way and from the same sources. I happen to think that there are specific forms of oppression and discrimination that LGBT people face that the rest of the community doesn’t face. Similarly, I think Trans/nb folks experience discrimination in a way different from the Gay/lesbian/bi/pan community. I could probably draw a flow chart to explain it better. As a result of these different layers of oppression and discrimination, I think as a necessity there should be different subgroups and coalitions fighting for different rights.

However, I think there are a lot of discrimination that LGBT folks and Asexual, Intersex, Queer+ folks face in similar ways, and I think going forward a broader coalition with the goals of acceptance/visibility, taking stands against corrective rape, and fighting depression among young people for feeling broken due to their attraction to the wrong people [or lack of attraction entirely] are common goals within the broader community. That’s where the LGBTQIA+ comes in.

That’s why I’m a fan of the term Gender and Sexual Minorities - I think there’s a difference in being LGBT and ace in the same way I think there’s a difference between being gay/lesbian/bi/pan vs. trans/nb, and a difference between being trans vs. nb, gay vs. lesbian, bi vs. pan, or any other identity. Different subgroups, only there is a separate subgroup of LGBT before the final big LGBTQIA+ umbrella.

And I think that’s what pride is about. It’s a time where anyone who is a gender or sexual minority (and allies) can come out and be proud to be who we are, and fight for our common goals. At a certain point, I have my opinions on specific words and what they mean and who gets to be what, but in the end I’m just a faceless human on tumblr sharing my thoughts. I’m not the authority on this, who belongs where, etc. In the end, anyone who isn’t hurting other people or themselves is welcome to stand with me. Happy pride!!!
