떼창 미쳤다. 대단하다고 명명할 수 있는 음악인들은 많지만 난 노엘이나 리암이 천재라고 생각하는 게 그 누구도 이 둘한테 음악을 가르쳐주지 않았다는 거다. 리암에게 누구도 노래 부르는 걸(+프론트맨 짬바 좀 생기니까 곡 쓰는 것도) 알려주지 않았고 노엘에게 곡 쓰는 걸 가르쳐준 사람도 없었다. 그렇게 자기들 힘으로, 노엘 말마따나 '더 올라갈 데가 없는' 정상까지 올라간 거다. 난 그런 아티스트를 지금껏 알게 된 적이 없다.

천재란 그런 게 아닐까. 누가 가르쳐주지 않아도 그 자리에서 최고가 될 수밖에 없는 DNA가 탑재된 채 태어난 사람들. 미술가, 작가들 가운데 천재가 있는지는 잘 모르겠다. 미술의 영역은 내겐 너무 심오하고 명작의 기준을 모르겠으며(대체 현대미술의 객관적 정의는 무엇인가) 작가들은 하루 아침에 역작을 써낸 걸 본 적 없어서 천재라 부를 수 있는지 모르겠다. 또 공부 쪽에서 IQ가 높고 이런 것도 천재인지 모르겠다. 그냥 '두뇌가 비상한 것'이지.

천재의 정의는 각자 다 다르지만(천재란 건 원래부터 없다고 믿는 우리 아빠 같은 사람도 있고), 글쎄. 이렇게 머리가 좀 돌아버린 채로 태어나, 자기 의지로 배워서 실력이 쌓이는 게 아니라 영감이 스스로 생기는 게 난 천재가 아닐까 싶다.
