A bit more of The Price we Pay (and this is one of my faves so far!):

He checked the time, noted how much work he had left, and opted to keep going. He would take a late lunch rather than risk breaking his motivation. He lifted his gaze from the clock to the screen, and stared out at a field of overgrown, dry yellow grass.

Wind tugged at his sweater and the loose folds of his sweatpants. Rain spattered his shoulders and the top of his head. His breath came in puffing gasps. He was near the freeway, standing on the edge of the shoulder and facing a big open field. The wind was rough, and the sky was going from dreary gray to sickly green as he watched.

His heart pounded. He twisted his head from side-to-side, resisting the panicked instinct to rip the blindfold off. He couldn’t have been sleepwalking. He was just at his desk, working, wide awake.

The birds and bugs went silent.

Stiles made himself breathe and concentrate on what was happening now. He imagined Derek’s voice: “Don’t you want to know how to control them?” and tried to understand.

Power surged in his veins. He sensed unease; there was a restlessness around him, a building disaster.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

"life doesnt get better, you just get stronger" does NOT include ages 11-17. life does in fact just get better from there. those years are dogshit. like, you do get stronger but its mostly just a factor of not being 11-17 anymore. positive thinking helps but it doesnt fix whatevers going on at 15, you have to brute force through that one raw
