What's your take on the ddos attack on AO3?
I think this post pretty much summarized what happened to AO3
Now, AO3 did say that the website is back up but there is a possibility of slowing down or an issue or two as they have yet to optimize their new CloudFlare so let’s all be patient and keep an ear out for any news from AO3 (I believe this is their official tumblr?)
As for my take itself, I agree that this is a group masquerading as another group and there is a possibility that this is actually fueled by greed as they have tried to ransom AO3 as well and the whole ‘reason’ they gave in their official statement is just smokescreen.
Honestly, that’s all I have since I was writing (or maybe I was at work? Not sure when AO3 went down) then asleep then worked while AO3 was down so I didn’t have time to panic or check for any wils conspiracy theory (if there are any? I don't think so.
I did feel that it’s kinda ironic that AO3 goes down a few hours after I updated The Shadow’s Endgame after that huge cliffhanger last week so for those who received a ‘oh hey, Shadow’s Endgame updated’ notif from AO3 and was met with AO3 being down… I feel the desire to say sorry to you guys.
Also, considering the personality I plan to write for the newly introduced character in Eagle of Alamut, he’s going to be sulking that his ‘debut’ has been postponed because of this.
Other than that, I did read that there was a possibility it would be down for weeks (which probably won’t happen this time around) and I was like “Noooo, my ‘carefully’ thought of chapter schedules!” and I was debating if I should just post new chapters here in Tumblr as well? We’ll see. If it appears that AO3 will be having technical difficulties until next Monday’s scheduled postings, I’ll post the next chapter of Eagle of Alamut here in Tumblr as well.
Funny thing is I was thinking if I should post the Tumblr fic ideas I have in this blog to AO3 as a way to:
Have an easier time actually finding them if I need them
Just to have a back up in case some fuckery happens
But I haven’t checked if fic ideas and headcanons/analysis don’t violate any of AO3’s rules and regulations. I’d probably have to look into that first but I’ve been so busy this past few weeks and will be busy until like second or third week of September.
And now I realized that we’ve slightly moved away from the actual ask and I guess this would be the most awkward time to end this answer.
Anyway, download emergency fanfics just in case, keep a look out for any announcements from AO3’s official accounts and do as they request, and, if you can, donate to AO3 whatever amount you can without it impacting your way of living and any plans you may have.

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.
Edit: if you are able, use $5 you would otherwise use for a streaming subscription to donate to a GazaFunds campaign.

I’ve been obsessed with the Olympics for the past week, and obsessed with Dick Grayson for longer, so here’s the crossover we all deserve.

Please, for the love of god, please don’t be this person. No matter how long it’s been since an update, no matter how many unfinished stories are sitting on their account, no matter what - do not be this person.
Not only is it insanely rude, but you also do more damage than you think be being such a self-entitled ass about something someone created for free and for fun. “This author” can see what you say.
RIP decency indeed.

The people against bows becoming a trendy fashion accessory has annoyed me sooo much lately. Saw a tiktok that was like “if you get uncomfortable with us saying wearing bows infantilizes women and supports the patriarchy, it just means you’re uncomfortable with us pointing out you’ve been engaging in a harmful trend/behavior 😌” aaaaaAAAAAAH people online are allergic to nuance

I mean honestly I don’t hate Harris. or Biden, who has actually done a lot of good in the last four years especially considering the mess he had to clean up. but whatever gets the “my imaginary moral high ground is more important than peoples’ lives” fucks to vote.

Blitzøs entire life spent being unwanted. So he adapted, and learned how to be something needed, something to be used.
Which is why I think he firmly believes he is being used by Stolas. He simply cannot fathom a different reality, one in which he is wanted for once in his life.

I don’t care if this comes off as cruel but you are not entitled to fanfiction. You are not entitled to podfics. You are not entitled to translated works.
Creators are not paid to make fanworks. People spend years of their lives writing fic and getting nothing in return except positive interactions. You can ask to make a translation. You can ask to make a pod fic. But you cannot demand it.
And because the only thing fanfic writers get in return for their work is positive feedback, taking away an authors ability to receive that is disgusting. Authors deserve to have full control and ownership of their works.
Fanfic isn’t a product to consume and then demand more of. Authors and creators deserve better.

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.
I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.
Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.
No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.
But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?
