The Bad Kids Are all multilingual because hey dnd characters always are. Fun to think about. Update from later Fabian kinda hijacked this post at the end my bad. All I can think about is the character ™️

Fabian and Adaine speak a different dialect of Elvish than Fig but like it's still the same language. I'm not sure what Kristen and Riz would have learned — maybe Kristen the wood-elven dialect and Riz the high one? Cause people who would have maybe influenced church camp vs what Riz might have gotten in some elective at school or learned by himself via dictionary like the nerd he is. But maybe not that relevant, I don't think it makes too much of difference.

Gorgug writes most of his notes in Gnomish. And while all of the Bad Kids kind of do it because, well, multilingual moment, I think Gorgug does the thing the most where you're talking and you're like what the fuck is this word in English. Uhm. Uhm. Scheibenwischer. And he speaks the one language that none of his friends speak so they're all just idk man you're on your own. Also personal hc Gorgug starts learning Orc (Orcish?? Dnd languages so straight forward and yet so confusing to me.) after meeting his bio parents. Riz also knows Orc and I'm gonna assume Ragh would so um green bonding time. Also also personal hc Goblin and Orc are similar in the way German and Dutch are (I can only go off of languages I know so this is gonna be my only example. Lmao.) because yeah.

Anyway Fabian is I think the one who mixes them up the most on purpose. You know how teenagers in non English speaking countries will inject random English into every sentence because internet. And it's just a thing now. Fabian does this over in Kei Lumenera with the other elves and common (common being English just for clarification). He's fluent in elvish it just doesn't feel right man. BUT. SPEAKING OF HIM BEING FLUENT IN ELVISH. His accent in it is very distinctively Solesian and you can only hear a little bit of Fallinel in certain words. Which isn't that big of a deal but it's notable. Because Hallariel doesn't sound like that and she's the one who taught him. Let me word. Eugh.

She was obviously very. Negligent. But I think that up until Fabian was like, idk, three or four? He did spend a lot of time with her. Like she wasn't taking care of him or doing anything with him but he'd be in the room with her as long as he wasn't being "bothersome" (normal kid "annoying". crying, loud, needs help with everything. etc.) because then Cathilda had to come and get him. But she would talk to herself a lot and/or rant about things little baby Fabian really had no chance at understanding lol, and it's not like she wanted him to respond. But this would be in elvish because it's her native tongue, and because kids are sponges he learned elvish. They didn't raise him multilingual on purpose it just happens. Side note i think she talked to him in the womb a lot I do. There is something to me about her focusing a lot on this child until he was born / until he started becoming a proper person. (It was so easy to love him when he was just a part of her and wasn't a separate entity that she needs to actively try to pay attention to what who said that that's. Crazy.)

So yeah Fabian is fluent as a kid, but then as he gets older he really doesn't have an opportunity to converse in Elvish for years, so he. Forgets a little bit? And he'll still read stuff in the language but he doesn't speak it with anyone until the Bad Kids start to use it for secrecy reasons (which I actually think is really funny and inefficient because I'd assume this is one of the more common second languages in solace. But I digress.) And at that point he's conversational but gods he's rusty, but between Gorgug not understanding it all, Kristen's being super broken, and Riz clearly only knowing it through reading/writing and having trouble with pronunciation because this isn't a language he's used to speaking it's not that noticeable? Idk. Adaine probably clocked it but didn't think much of it.

It comes back to him pretty quickly, (and by Sophmore year he has no trouble in Fallinel + probably started speaking more elvish at home again now that his mother is kind of talking to him and Gilear is there) it's just that now his accent shifted. (And it's still the language he feels the least "at home in" or comfortable speaking. It's common -> halfling -> elvish for him. I think.) (Yes I know that his wiki says he also knows tornado. I think he understands it but can't speak it. I don't think he can make the required sounds I'll be real.)

really loved your post on greek(-ish) film productions, but would you mind going into more detail about "the greek gaze"? 😇

Sure. By Greek gaze I mean the way a Greek experiences a Greek-inspired movie that is meant for international audiences. Our experience is not the same with everyone else.

I will give you a hypothetical example. Imagine that the modern state of Greece was the largest film industry in the world instead of the USA. Given the crazy number of film productions that take place annually to keep the film engine going, Greeks would of course soon start using material from other nations, new non-Greek stories to adapt them into movies. So surely at some point the Greeks would also make a movie on American history. A quick example, let's say the story of Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War.

So the production starts and, of course, native Greek actors take all the significant roles at least. There is a native Brit in a supporting role, to include some accurate diversity. The movie is in Greek obviously, so Lincoln and everyone else speak Greek. The Greek moviemakers want to be "accurate" so the Yankees speak Athenian Greek whereas the Rednecks speak in the Cretan dialect. They try their best to get most crucial events right but some have to be changed a little bit to be more acceptable or interesting to the Greek viewers. And also there might be some bits that the Greeks don't know as well or have a different perception for them but, hey, who will notice after all? They want to have a scene in the Grand Canyon for whatever reason but it's not worth it going there just for that, so it shows Meteora instead, close enough, right? Greeks won't care anyway. The Greeks are not extremely knowledgeable on how Americans dressed in the 19th century, but they looked it up a bit on the internet and they read a couple of books and they believe some generic vintage western clothes they have in the vestiaries in their theatres can work well enough as an inspiration. They will do the job. They want to make this a good movie, a commercial success, and this translates into catering to Greek viewers' wants, therefore the movie also features elements, tropes and adjustments in the plot that are known to be attractive to Greeks.

Greek audiences love it indeed. Then it's released internationally. Other nations are used to Greeks being the ones making the movies about most everyone so they don't care that Lincoln speaks Greek and the movie has clear evidence of a Greek rather than an American perception of the American history. It's just a movie. We all know it mustn't have been exactly like this in reality! But nobody cares. It's not a big deal. We're here for the fun.

Then the movie is released in American cinemas. So there are three ways the American will experience this and it is going to be very different from all other nations. The American will either be: a) straight out horrified, b) laughing non-stop for the entirety of the film, or c) sullenly taking into account all inaccuracies and all telling signs that the Greeks do not know American history all that well and, more importantly, that they have no insight into American society at all. The American will be very annoyed because they clearly see very obviously Greek Greeks with thick Greek accents, Greek mannerisms, Greek hand gestures pretend to be Americans and demonstrate some events that did happen in America, but not like that!!! The American wants to protest that this is a travesty but they also feel hesitant to do it because after all they are also a little touched that the famous Greek moviemakers valued American history enough to make a film about it, despite that they butchered both the history and the depiction of the American society thoroughly.

If however the Greek moviemakers cared to collaborate with Americans and welcomed their insight, if they themselves went to the USA to pick up on mannerisms, attitudes and common character types, in order to make an informed representation, if they studied and explored the US enough to develop a profound understanding of American society and culture, if they cared enough to really and passionately present the values and the motives that permeated the causes behind the war, and all this showed in the final work, then the American audiences would be more pleased. Suddenly the inaccuracies would matter less, because hey! they can tell these Greeks strived a lot and respected the history and who Americans are as people. The Americans will pick up the little mannerisms, all the little easter eggs, anything that will make them feel seen by the famous Greek moviemakers who evidently understand them to some degree. No other nation will notice or understand this. Only the Americans and those who have lived in the USA can and only those will care enough in the first place. And they would appreciate that those Greek film celebrities took the time and care to think it would be appropriate that the movie should also make the Americans content, either with its accuracy or with its respect.

So this is what I refer to by Greek gaze. It goes beyond sticking to a literary or historical source. Our eyes are by default trained to pick up on inaccuracies and little easter eggs of insight on the Greek culture. Troy had some such moments. Disney's Hercules did too. Yes both were American but you could tell they had a mentality of "okay we're trying to be Greeks for this one". Recent productions do not have this heart or this genuine effort, it's like Americans (or other foreigners) clock in for the job, a role with a strange name, and other than that you can tell that nobody cares in the slightest that they are actively representing the culture of someone who is about to watch this movie when it's released in a few months.

*Having said this, I must clarify that Hercules and Troy are in no way ideal or good enough in this, but they are comparatively better than the other productions.

Bart Allen: Internet/game accent with a southerner twang (plus, speedsters process the world around them differently, including language, so I imagine there is a sort of “speedster accent” since he’s not used to speaking slow)

Anita Fite: Bayou, Haitian, and slight Jamaican accent (probably got not as strong after less time with her relatives. Btw her dad is Jamaican. Also, where did she move to with her dad after gma’s death? Bc that would influence it too)

Tim Drake: Gotham accent (NY or NJ. Mid-Atlantic) kinda privileged white boy version.

Kon El: I hc him as speaking in a “charming” city/suburb way (Delaware aka metropolis), while trying to hide that ever so slight rural mid-west accent from slipping out at certain words

Cissie King-Jones: A suburban east-coast accent (She is from Pennsylvania) but add the fact she goes to an all girls school (groups can form their own dialects)

Cassie Sandsmark: suburban east-coast accent mostly. (mixed slightly with NYC style accent)

Slobo: he’s from another planet, but if ya interpret how they spell what he says mixed with his personality you get rough city-southern (slurred speech with some consonants spat. Harsh, gravelly voice.)

Secret: She grew up in Rhode Island (suburbs I think?), so New England accent. Also, based on how they show her speech bubbles/text: soft spoken, week voice, strained

More languages headcanons:

- Kon tries to avoid saying words like “dog” around his friends and crushes. When he does have to say it, he’s very conscious of how his pronouncing it and will pause a moment before saying it slightly slow.

- Because of Bart being neurodivergent, he picks up accents easily. And his accent can fluctuate occasionally into the accent of who his speaking to. (This is technically canon)

- A Valley Girl moved to Cissies school and infected the whole school with her accent. She then has a slight valley accent for a bit (never fully goes away)

- Bart Allen confuses the FUCK out of other southerners since he speaks so fast with a slight southern accent.

- Bart’s voice is fucking weird in general bc he had to get used to speaking 10x slower than normal (bc VR world n shit)

- It’s canon that Cassie says “like” a lot, and I just wanna point that out again

- They all mock the way Tim speaks

- Nobody mocks the way Bart speaks (some of them want to but literally don know how to since his accent is so weird)

- Slobo’s accent is slightly softer than Lobo’s (genetic runt n all). He tries to force it to be harsh most of the time though.

- Secret is so soft spoke with a strained voice bc of her ptsd. After she becomes human again she is slightly better, but the way she strains her voice hurts her now since it’s a solid body.

- Not exactly a hc, but did Anita smack Kon after he mocked her accent? Bc if they didn’t show it in the comic, I hc she did. Kon tried to be better after mocking her accent that one time though (This is canon. She pretended something he said once was a racist thing and he got so scared. She laughed at him for it and said she was just messing).

- Strangers sometimes stare at Bart and Slobo talking to each other bc their accents are so odd. When one of them notice, they silently signal to the other, and then they both suddenly stop talking to turn ominously to the person looking. (They also later let Anita in on their trick bc they noticed that some racist people occasionally shoot her weird looks. They love scaring bigots with this trick.)

- After all her parents died, Anita noticed her accent start to slip and that frustrated her, so she made sure to make sure to have her Haitian accent prevail (visits to her hometown, etc.)

you couldn't find it because this language does not have an official romanisation system nor a singular script.

firstly hi!! no bother at all, thank you for asking (going to use this as an opportunity): the language i added to this post was persian, the official lingua franca of iran and tajikistan (tajik dialect) as well as the ex-official lingua franca and unofficial lingua franca of afghanistan (dari dialect). it is spoken all over the middle east/central asia by certain age or ethnic groups and places with iranic ethnic groups (eg in china, by chinese tajiks or kuwait, by kuwaiti ajam*).

*this is how the kuwaiti government officially refers to them despite ajam being a slur

though it is not necessarily spoken only by iranic peoples only and outside of those 3 named countries, it is now moreso the language of names and poetry of certain ethnic groups, like the uyghurs in xinjiang don't speak persian but they have persian names, for example one of the most famous living chinese actresses at the moment is named dilraba which means heart-stealer (robbing=rob/rab. it's an indo-european language and shares many word roots.)

why is this language so confusing?!

persian has historically been and is suppressed by various governments, eg kuwaiti persian is an endangered language according to UNESCO (thanks kuwaiti gov), the taliban that only uses pashto despite it only being spoken by approx 40% of the populace while dari/persian is spoken by over 75%, it was also suppressed in central asia by the soviets which is why tajiks use cyrillic and persian is now barely spoken in uzbekistan (the current gov isnt a big fan of it either). in iran, we use the perso-arabic script because of arab colonialism and the suppression of persian for over a millennium and the word "lotfan" which i used as 'please' is an arabic word. anyway even discussing persian or anything iranian is pretty controversial in arab spaces. saddam hussein's ba'ath forces tried to stop iranian arabs from teaching persian during the iran-iraq war and killed them for refusing (he also expected him to join his forces while he was invading which... obviously... didn't work). i personally refuse to use the arabic script despite being capable of doing so because as a linguist, a semitic script and an indo-european language don't go together (the cyrillic script the tajiks use isn't any better).

if i had used the perso-arabic script that my fellow iranians use, you would've found this language easily. except you would've thought that the language you saw is arabic. and you would've never known what language it really was. so for the sake of not letting this language be any less ambiguous, i wrote it with my own romanisation script which i am developing.

i hope this provided some insight on a language many people have only heard of and know very little about other than the fact ed sheeran dropped a mediocre pop song this year named "azizam" which is both sung in persian for one version and uses iranian music styles (albeit very poorly). oh and the fact that it's the name of the persian gulf that trump is trying to change the name of, for some reason.

this language is very dear to a lot of people, especially me. it challenges your view of the gender binary (no pronouns, grammatical gender and no gendered terms for jobs etc...), race (there exists no tangible concept of race and you cannot refer to people solely as their skin tone, you must say "xyz-skinned person") and is incredibly easy to learn to speak thanks to its flexibility, you are also free to romanise it how you like (whether you use dari, tajik or one of the hundreds of the accents in iran), it will be intelligible. thank you for reading.

Every time I write or read in English I realize I'm reading and using the same stock phrases over and over. I don't have that feeling in Spanish, I wonder why? Sure, it's my mother tongue so I understand it better, but I also believe it's the diversity of dialects. Every time I read or hear Spanish from other places, or speak to people with other places, I encounter different phrases and also different modes, registers...

Not that English doesn't have its own diverse dialects too, but I'm less exposed to them -which is strange, as 70% of the things I consume on the internet are in English- and so perhaps I tend to think the 'Movie Usamerican Accent' is the default dialect. Even so, the differences between British and American English are rather minor to me compared to Spanish dialects. But again, maybe it's because those are the ones represented in media, I know there are a lot of other dialects I seldom hear.

Seventeen's Dialects

For a very tiny country, South Korea has many distinct dialects (6 major ones to be exact). And so I wanted to share with yall the different dialects used by Seventeen members! (especially seungkwan cuz its so cool)

Gyeongsang Dialect: this dialect is by far the most popularized and well-known Korean dialect. it's mainly characterized by its aggressive, fast-paced, and strongly emphasized sounds. it's also pitch-accented, meaning you can hear the different intonations and stresses on syllables. there are also subtle differences between different gyeongsang-do cities that native speakers of the dialect can easily hear and tell apart.

Woozi - Woozi is from Busan, where the accent falls on the back syllable and the "g" (ㄱ) is used more. his accent doesn't really jump out often but every now and then you can hear a slightttt tinge of the dialect. in BTS Suga's Suchwita episode 10 with Woozi theres a part where Suga (as a fellow gyeongsang-do born) is able to immediately tell that Woozi is from gyeongsang by his intonation.

S.Coups - on the other hand, S.coups is from Daegu, where the accent falls on the front syllable and the "k" (ㅋ) sound is used more. as you can see, even though s.coups and woozi are both from gyeongsang, their different cities means their accents are a bit different. in fact, the busan dialect evolved in order for people to be able to hear what is being said over water better whereas the daegu dialect evolved to be able to travel through the air better. s.coups' accent jumps out quite often in varying degrees. sometimes its very obvious and other times it's more subtle, but overall you can definitely notice it if you listen close enough.

Wonwoo - unlike the other two, wonwoo is from Changwon, so neither Busan or Daegu (the 2 most prominent gyeongsang-do cities). i don't have enough experience to know anything in particular about the changwon dialect but i assume that it's basically the same as the busan dialect since it's pretty close to there. from what I personally hear, I think wonwoo's dialect is definitely the most recognizable and frequent out of the 3 gyeongsang members. i feel like every other sentence he says has a bit of the accent thrown in naturally.

Jeolla Dialect: the jeolla dialect also has many different pitches and intonations used and is mainly characterized by its warm and kind sounding tone. vowels are the emphasis and are dragged out/lengthened, giving speakers of this dialect a very affectionate, smooth, and melodic voice.

Dino - dino likes to whip out his dialect here and there, especially when joking around and having fun with the other members. dino's accent comes out the most by far whenever he turns into his boomer character, Pi Cheolin! so basically any Pi Cheolin clip is just dino speaking in jeolla dialect.

Jeju Dialect (language): this dialect of Korean is so vastly different from the rest of the dialects that it's basically completely unintelligible to other Koreans. because of this, many people even say that the Jeju dialect is actually a language of its own. really, the jeju dialect seems to be officially classified as a "language dialect". to add on, this dialect is also classified as a critically endangered language by UNESCO which is definitely very worrying.

Seungkwan - even though he is from Jeju Island, there has never really been a time where he ever spoke in the Jeju dialect in front of the camera. so unfortunately there's no examples I can give regarding Seungkwan....atleast thats what I thought. after some more digging on the korean side of the internet it turns out there are a few clips of him speaking in the jeju language! heres one of them:

this is sumn i wanna talk about too in terms of alternates and what ive studied on them.

unfortunately a lot of what alex has said is like.. nowhere to be found nor is it brought up in any discussion regarding alternates. most info just straight up blew away in the wind, got deleted previously, or straight up disappeared after the stupid drama. its a lil frustrating bc i do not know what counts as canon or not anymore or whats just lost info.

that being said im gonna treat this as fact even tho idk where this info went either. (ty for bringin it up!)

a lot of things i want to know about alternates would 100% be incomprehensible. if i was in that universe trying to study them as, say, a species of animal, i couldnt get too far without hitting major road blocks. bc theyre not animals. idek if they can even be fully classified as demons despite the religious aspect to the series.

alternates might not have true forms that we know of, but in my N art post i need to acknowledge humans can see and even interact with alternates physically. what their forms look like before attempting to mimic human anatomy might not even be a FORM- but an IDEA of one. they might not even exist until a human creates that fear or thought. even then, despite attempting to copy entirely different humans.. theres a lot of similarities in each alternate and how they move too. N, adam in mandela catalyst, alt! thatcher all traverse in nearly identical ways when it comes to their skin stretching or moving

we see tulpas. we see alternates form in mirrors and crawl out of tvs. from what we know, theyre literally just manipulated ideas from children or potentially other vulnerable people. they might not even have a form until a person creates one for them. what they could be outside of that ill never understand until alex somehow clears it in tmc bc, unfortunately, im not there to pick and prod at an alternate about their 'biology'

they do work heavily in technology as well because im also inclined to believe thats their only form of communicating and adapting to humans on a much faster scale. Ofc theyre on a whole different dimensional plane than us- but they also need to learn. they need to adapt to our many different languages, voices, accents, dialect. N only started speaking because he began to mimic thatcher's voice- thus adapting to the language (even then as N seems to deterioate in vol 5. he seemingly loses this skill and can only make incomprehensible noises that got to jude anyways).

the internet and our technology is most likely their best bet, and first step, into becoming a reality. otherwise they cant even communicate to humans and work more efficiently as alternates. as we saw in the recent cognito hazard- they still seem to struggle at the expanse of the internet as well. (though the alternate talking to addison mightve also just given up typing coherently since it already pulled her into an emotional trap for M.A.D and saw no need to talk as effectively as before).

Just as different Spanish dialects vary wildly, often to the point of being different enough to warrant a dub, so too does Arabic. Anything made and produced in Morocco will have another non-Moroccan, usually Egyptian Standard Arabic dub. Why? Because Moroccan Arabic has borrowed so many words from indigenous Amazight languages and keeps shortening all their words and they speak SO DAMN FAST no one outside Morocco can understand what they're saying. The "fuck vowels, all my homies hat vowels, get that vowel out of there" alone is enough to make for a really thick accent even when they're trying their damnedest to speak Egyptian Standard Arabic.

The Moroccan government was hoping more access to the internet and standard Arabic media might make the dialect more "normal". Instead, I can happily attest that my classroom of beloved Moroccan gremlins have begun grabbing English slang from online. You have not lived until you hear a teenage boy in a knockoff "Ike" hoodie with half the Nike logo say he's "sadge" to his friends and look at you like, 'Eh? That's a cool word, right, Mr. Foreign Teacher? This is what cool English speakers say?'

It's not. But I will never tell him otherwise, because he looked so satisfied with himself and so accomplished. I adore these language-butchering babies with my entire heart.

I think Tumblr dialect is tied really closely to the English language. I know tweets supercede the language barrier but I think Tumblr dialect has a very specific cadence to it that like. You had to have been reading Tumblr posts to be speaking like that. There's a culture tied to this thang. This immediately rules out swathes of the BIRDMEN cast.

The only people who are likely to use Tumblr based on a linguistic/geographic basis are the American birdmen, some of the European birdmen, (presumably) EDEN HQ people, Adams and Eves, Sagisawa Rei, Fiona, Silvereye Collins (?), and probably more I can't think of right now.

But the second pass of "can/would these potential Tumblr bloggers actually access Tumblr" is a totally different beast of a question. Older EDEN members like Viktor and Maria are not in the correct age bracket. Mutants and birdmen are so closely monitored it is extremely unlikely that they would be permitted to browse Tumblr to an extent it would affect their vernacular. Sagisawa strikes me more as a (retches slightly) Instagram user. Adams and Eves and also Eva seem less closely monitored than other EDEN subjects, but I still don't know that these people would would be allowed to freely access the internet. I imagine that information about the outside world has to be fought for tooth and nail, especially in EDEN's HQ.

Alva slips neatly through both of these filters, having grown up with a relatively normal childhood (not born and raised in a lab). Though she existed before maia arson crimew's hacktivism came to light, they are nonetheless the same archetype of person. I think any localization worth its salt would give Alva, who already frequently makes MMORPG metaphors and talks about "admin rights", a slight Tumblr accent. I think she'd fit right in. If she weren't 12 years old and the vanguard of a transhuman revolution she'd be posting about forcefem on here this I genuinely believe
