New Game Idea- Find The Asteroid Vesta

In 1807 four German astronomers discovered the second largest asteroid known (after Ceres) whilst looking for a missing planet.

The astronomers, known as the "celestial police" because of their aim to track down a missing planet supposedly located between Mars and Jupiter, spotted the asteroid on the 29th of March 1807.

At 2am on the 23rd of August, Vesta will make it's closest approach to earth, about 192.26km away. Theoretically, it will be visible with the naked eye, but unless conditions are perfect (literally perfect. Like no light pollution or anything), you're probably best off using binoculars. Preferably, you should also be further south than London so it's higher in the sky.

If you can, I recommend trying to catch a glimpse of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Juno, worshipped from prehistoric times by the ancient Romans, had several major temples devoted to her in the Eternal City. The first of each month, the kalends, was her sacred day, with a special festivity on February 1, as Juno Sospita (Juno, the Saviour). Her birthday was celebrated on June 1, the kalends of June. She was worshipped under many names serving different functions, for example:

Juno Regina: Juno the Queen, a member of the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva), with a temple on the Aventine Hill.

Juno Moneta: Juno, the Warner, or Exhorter. The sacred geese of Juno warned the Romans when the Gauls tried to take the Capitolium in 390 BCE. The temple of Juno Moneta stood on the Arx Capitolina, one hump of the Capitoline Hill, where the church of S. Maria Aracoeli ("Altar of Heaven") and the Vittoriano now stand. A mint later set in the temple has given us the word moneta, money, coin, the extension of governmental power.

The third of the asteroids to be discovered (September 1, 1804, by Karl L. Harding), Juno can be fierce, as befits a war goddess (!) and is bound by a sense of duty and social obligation. Her dark side also rules such things as divorce, and separation, infidelity and open conflict between partners. In the natal chart, Juno indicates the true color of the marital partner that we need—and will get. Astrologically Juno describes the ways in which we face the issues of compatibility, receptivity to others, mutual sharing, trust, jealousy, possessiveness and power struggles. 

Vesta (self-sufficiency): The eternal flame, which burns forever in the hearth. Vesta was the goddess of the living flame, the virgin goddess of home and hearth. Sister to Jupiter, Neptune, Ceres, and Juno, as a goddess of fire she was esteemed as a virgin, for as Ovid remarks, "she sends forth no seed, nor receives it, and loves the attendants of virginity". He means that the flame purifies all and is itself pure, the vivifying soul that ensouls matter with a spark of divine spirit. 

She was considered the calm, central foundation of the Earth, the centre of our visible universe. Her retinue were known as the Vestal Virgins, an ancient, actually prehistoric, sacred order originally filled only by the daughters of the ruling class. In primitive times, the daughters (especially the eldest) were given charge of the precious fire, the mother as head of the household being generally occupied with other tasks.

As the principle of focus and commitment, Vesta was one of the most revered of the goddesses. Her name means "the essence", "the fire", the true nature of things. Although she is little-known today, in ancient times she was widely worshipped as the central goddess in the Roman pantheon—the burning energy at the heart of life, home and society. Her domed, circular temple was set in the centre of Rome and her call to purification is still the rallying cry of truth. It shows us where we can be most dedicated, focusing our energies to achieve the best outcomes.

Vesta was the fourth asteroid to be discovered (by Heinrich Olbers, March 29, 1807, in the constellation Virgo). Under favourable conditions, Vesta, the brightest of the asteroids, can actually be seen with the naked eye. NASA in 2007 sent a spacecraft ("Dawn") on a five billion kilometre journey to investigate Vesta and her sister Ceres; this craft moved to contact Ceres in February 2015. 

It is interesting that due to a proposed collision with another asteroid long ago, a massive chunk of Vesta was splintered off and shattered into many smaller pieces—a number of which have since fallen to Earth as meteorites. Astrologically Vesta describes the ways in which we face the issues of personal integration, work, devotion, commitment, sacrifice, alienation from personal relationships, and a range of sexual complexes based on denial and fear of intimacy. (Pic 1) The Full Moon passes through Earth’s lighter outer shadow on January 10, bringing a penumbral lunar eclipse to residents across much of the Eastern Hemisphere. The subtle darkening of the Moon will be obvious to all who look. The penumbral eclipse recorded here occurred October 18, 2013.

Saturday, January 4:  The Quadrantid meteor shower reaches its peak this morning. The slightly gibbous Moon sets around 1 a.m. local time, leaving nearly five hours of darkness for watching. The Quadrantid shower typically produces up to 120 meteors per hour, an average of two per minute, so observers should be in for a great show if the weather cooperates. The meteors appear to radiate from a spot in the northern part of the constellation Boötes — an area once occupied by the now-defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis — a region that climbs highest just before dawn.

Sunday, January 5:  Earth reaches perihelion, the closest point to the Sun during its year-long orbit, at 3 a.m. EST. The two then lie 91.4 million miles (147.1 million kilometers) apart. It surprises many people to learn that Earth comes closest to the Sun in the dead of winter, but the cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year arises because the Sun lies low in the sky.  The Sun is in the news more than once today. Although people in the Northern Hemisphere experienced the shortest day of the year two weeks ago (at the winter solstice December 21), the Sun has continued to rise slightly later with each passing day. That trend stops this morning for those at 40° north latitude. Tomorrow’s sunrise will arrive a second earlier than today’s. This turnover point depends on latitude. If you live farther north, the switch occurred a few days ago; closer to the equator, the change won’t happen until later this month.

Monday, January 6:  Venus gleams in the southwestern sky after sunset. The brilliant planet stands out just a half hour after sunset, when it appears 20° above the horizon, and remains on display until 7:30 p.m. local time. Shining at magnitude –4.0, it is by far the brightest point of light in the night sky. A telescope shows Venus’ disk, which spans 13" and appears about 80 percent lit.

Tuesday, January 7: The brightest star in the sky (after the Sun, of course) puts on quite a show on January evenings. Gleaming at magnitude –1.5, Sirius shines nearly four times brighter than the next brightest star visible from mid-northern latitudes: Arcturus in the constellation Boötes. Sirius currently rises before 7 p.m. local time and ascends in the southeast throughout the evening hours.

Wednesday, January 8:  If you’re game for a quick eveninφg challenge, try to spot Neptune through binoculars. The distant planet lies 30° high in the southwest near the end of evening twilight and doesn’t set until nearly 10 p.m. local time. The magnitude 7.9 world appears against the backdrop of Aquarius, 1.0° west-southwest of the 4th-magnitude star Phi (f) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.2".

Thursday, January 9:  The solar system’s brightest asteroid is 4 Vesta, and it is conveniently located high in the early evening sky among the background stars of Cetus the Whale. Vesta glows at magnitude 7.5, which makes it a reasonably easy target through binoculars from the country and a snap to see with a small telescope from the suburbs. This week offers prime viewing because the asteroid lies near the 4th-magnitude star Mu (μ) Ceti. Tonight, you can spot Vesta just 0.5° southeast of this star. No other object brighter than the asteroid resides in its immediate vicinity

Friday, January 10: Full Moon arrives officially at 2:21 p.m. EST, but it will look completely illuminated all night. You can find it rising in the east at sunset and peaking high in the south shortly after midnight local time. It dips low in the west by the time morning twilight begins. The Moon spends the night near the border between the constellations Gemini the Twins and Cancer the Crab. If you live in the Eastern Hemisphere, look carefully and you should notice the dusky shading of a penumbral lunar eclipse over Luna’s southern half. The eclipse peaks at 19h10m UT, when 92 percent of the Moon lies within our planet’s light outer shadow. Mercury reaches superior conjunction at 10 a.m. EST. This means the innermost planet lies on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth and remains hidden in our star’s glare. It will return to view in the evening sky late this month.

Saturday, January 11: Uranus reached opposition and peak visibility in late October, but it remains a tempting target in January. The outer planet appears highest in the south once darkness falls, when it stands two-thirds of the way to the zenith. The magnitude 5.8 world lies in southwestern Aries the Ram, near that constellation’s border with Pisces the Fish and Cetus the Whale. Although Uranus shines brightly enough to glimpse with the naked eye from a dark site, binoculars will help your search immensely. The closest guide star is magnitude 4.4 Xi1 (ξ1) Ceti, which lies 4° to the southeast. A telescope reveals Uranus’ disk, which spans 3.6" and shows a distinct blue-green hue.

Sunday, January 12:  Ruddy Mars grows more prominent before dawn with each passing week. The Red Planet now rises just after 4 a.m. local time and climbs 20° above the southeastern horizon an hour before sunrise. Mars glows at magnitude 1.5 against the backdrop of Scorpius the Scorpion, some 6° north-northwest of its ancient rival, the 1st-magnitude star Antares. Unfortunately, a telescope doesn’t add much to the view, revealing a bland disk only 4" across.

A/N: This is the first time I wrote for Tony Stark. In the end, I decided to do a Tony Stark x Reader in a romantic relationship. But don’t worry, I will do another one when I finish this series where Tony has a daughter and she grows up along the story.

"Is that what teenagers do nowadays?"

At the familiar voice, Peter stopped paying attention to the new Star Wars ship model that Ned had brought to the tower. "Mr Stark! This is Ned!" Peter could not help but smile widely. He felt totally privileged because after whining for a couple of months, Tony had finally given permission for Ned to visit the Stark Tower on condition that they did not come to his place of work.

Clint watched Peter smile as if he was a 3-year-old child, and wondered just how the teenager had been able to convince Tony Stark. Everyone in the tower knew that Tony had a soft spot for Peter, but nobody imagined he would be able to be so soft. 

"I was telling Ned how last time we fought against Loki and that army he created himself using other people's powers." Most of the Avengers who were present couldn’t help but roll their eyes when Peter started talking quickly without pausing to breathe.

"Peter." Tony stared at him, trying to hide the small grin that was beginning to appear in his mouth. "Get to the point."

"Peter says you are invincible!" Ned's eyes shone. After all, Tony Stark was in front of him.

"Thank you very much, little Hawaiian child." He walked away from them both as he made his way to the kitchen, wanting to drink a couple of cups of coffee after spending all night working on improvements for his suit. Improvements that didn’t seem to convince him much.

"He just called me..." Ned's voice was immediately interrupted by Peter, who was already used to Tony's nicknames. "Let me show you the balcony, you can see the whole city from there. I advise you not to look down or you will puke. I puked all over Clint.”

"Do not remind me of that day." Clint grumbled, closing his eyes and trying to forget that disgusting moment. The day he had lost one of his favourite pair of jeans and boots.

"Another night awake?" Banner asked, entering the kitchen.

"Mmmh, I'm trying to create some new features for JARVIS. I got it, but I'm not very satisfied with them. I think something is missing." He drank some of the coffee he had prepared, closing his eyes and letting a sigh leave his mouth after swallowing. "A cup, Doctor?"

"Oh no, no, no." He made excessive and unnecessary gestures with his hands. "If I drink a single cup of coffee, I don’t think I can control the other guy."

Tony smirked.

But he was interrupted by the screams of Peter and Ned. He left his cup on the counter and ran to the balcony where everyone else was there now.

"Why the fuck are you screaming?" Tony approached Peter and Ned, who had their backs to him.

"Tony." Steve caught his attention and gestured to where the two teenagers were looking and the probable cause of why they had shouted like that. Tony wrote down on a mental note to laugh, after discovering which of the two had shouted in such a highway.

A girl. In front of everyone, there was a young girl. She was sitting on the floor, her legs against her chest and her face hidden by her long hair and the angle she was in, looking at the ground. She didn’t raise her head at all. Not even after all the commotion.

Her body was covered by a kind of thin sheet that was broken in many places, showing most of her skin.

"S-she just fell from the sky." The two teenagers were still enthralled with the person who, as they had said, had fallen from above before them.

Tony took two steps forward. "It's not like I'm complaining about seeing a girl in my tower, but who are you?" Natasha and Steve couldn’t help but roll their eyes again due to Tony trying to make a joke of it all.

The girl got up slowly, though her hair still covered her face. All of the others ended up in positions, ready to attack if necessary. Natasha and Clint realized that she was weak. Her legs trembled to maintain the weight of her body. Her bones were visible, more than they should be, which indicated that she wasn't in good condition and could pass out anytime. 

 "I don’t think it's a good idea to approach her." Steve whispered when Tony stood in front of Peter and Ned, just in case.

"Do you understand what we are saying? Where did you come from?" Natasha directed her words to the young woman, who eventually lifted her face, revealing her blue eyes. 

Blue eyes that weren't normal. The young woman directed her gaze towards Tony, and those blue eyes began to shine even more.

Under her gaze, Tony began to feel great pain in his chest, specifically under his arc reactor. He placed his hand on it and noticed how the device was overheating. His head started to hurt and breathing seemed to be more and more complicated.

"Mr Stark?" Peter grasped Tony's arm, who was beginning to struggle to breathe. He fell to his knees on the floor, clutching his chest and staring at that mysterious girl. What was she doing?

At Steve's signal, Bruce ran to Tony, who was now lying on the ground. Clint, Thor, Steve and Natasha pointed their weapons at the girl, who didn’t stop looking at Tony.

"What the fuck is going on, Bruce?!" Clint began to get nervous noticing that this girl could be a danger to everyone and could have been sent by someone to harm them.

"This is incredible." Banner whispered. "The arc reactor is not working, I think she is consuming Tony's energy."

“How the fuck is she doing that?” Steve asked without removing her eyes from her.

“I don’t know! I don’t know what she is doing but she needs to stop before the arc stops working completely.” He took Tony’s pulse. It was faint, almost not there.

“You are hurting him! Stop!” Peter screamed, now protecting Tony with his own body. “I don’t want to hurt you so please stop!”

The girl stopped consuming the energy that Tony's reactor provided.

"What the fuck?" Clint exclaimed, nudging Natasha. Before, they had acknowledged the bad state in which the girl was, and although she was still wrapped in a torn sheet that covered just enough, her legs no longer quivered while trying to hold her own weight and her bones were no longer visible as before.

"She just consumed the reactor’s energy to increase her own." Natasha explained.

"Cool." Clint frowned. "Another little monster."

He and Natasha approached the girl, keeping their eyes on her and their weapons still pointing at her.

"Are you okay, Mr Stark?" Anyone could notice the concern in the young boy’s voice, but honestly, everyone was worried about Tony. With Bruce's help, Tony managed to sit on the ground after recovering his breathing. He nodded, still looking at the girl.

"Didn’t you say he was invincible?" Ned whispered, earning a little punch on the belly from Peter.

Thor, who had disappeared for a few seconds, reappeared with a blanket in his hands. He approached her slowly, reaching out to offer her a blanket so that she could cover himself.

She extended her hand, her fingers touching the blanket, and then, bubbles and smoke began to come out of where she was touching. Thor quickly let go of the blanket, letting it fall to the ground.

"That reaction is typical of..." Bruce started, completely shocked.

"Sulfuric acid." Tony finished for him.

Zodiac Signs and Their Traits

In Western astrology, astrological signs are the twelve 30° sectors of the ecliptic, starting at the vernal equinox (one of the intersections of the ecliptic with the celestial equator), also known as the First Point of Aries. The order of the astrological signs is Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each sector is named for a constellation it passes through. The concept of the zodiac originated in Babylonian astrology and was later influenced by Hellenistic culture. According to astrology, celestial phenomena relate to human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the signs are held to represent characteristic modes of expression. Modern discoveries about the true nature of celestial objects have undermined the theoretical basis for assigning meaning to astrological signs, and empirical scientific investigation has shown that predictions and recommendations based on these systems are not accurate.: 85;424 Astrology is generally regarded as pseudoscience. The twelve sector division of the ecliptic constitutes astrology's primary frame of reference when considering the positions of celestial bodies, from a geocentric point of view, so that we may find, for instance, the Sun in 23° Aries (23° longitude), the Moon in 7° Scorpio (217° longitude), or Jupiter in 29° Pisces (359° longitude). Beyond the celestial bodies, other astrological points that are dependent on geographical location and time (namely, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Vertex and the houses' cusps) are also referenced within this ecliptic coordinate system. Various approaches to measuring and dividing the sky are currently used by differing systems of astrology, although the tradition of the Zodiac's names and symbols remain consistent. Western astrology measures from Equinox and Solstice points (points relating to equal, longest and shortest days of the tropical year), while Jyotiṣa or Vedic astrology measures along the equatorial plane (sidereal year). Precession results in Western astrology's zodiacal divisions not corresponding in the current era to the constellations that carry similar names, while Jyotiṣa measurements still correspond with the background constellations. In Western and Indian astrology, the emphasis is on space, and the movement of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky through each of the zodiac signs. In Chinese astrology, by contrast, the emphasis is on time, with the zodiac operating on cycles of years, months, and hours of the day.

Planetary Rulership

Rulership is the connection between planet and correlated sign and house. In traditional Western astrology, each sign is ruled by one and only one of the seven visible planets (note that in astrology, the Sun and Moon are termed The Lights, while the other bodies are called planets, which literally means wanderers, i.e. wandering stars as opposed to the fixed stars). The traditional rulership’s are as follows: Aries (Mars), Taurus (Venus), Gemini (Mercury), Cancer (Moon), Leo (Sun), Virgo (Mercury), Libra (Venus), Scorpio (Pluto), Sagittarius (Jupiter), Capricorn (Saturn), Aquarius (Uranus), and Pisces (Neptune). Psychologically oriented astrologers often believe that Saturn is the ruler or co-ruler of Aquarius instead of Uranus; Neptune is the ruler or co-ruler of Pisces instead of Jupiter, and that Pluto is the ruler or co-ruler of Scorpio instead of Mars. Some astrologers believe that the planetoid Chiron may be the ruler of Virgo, while other group of modern astrologers claim that Ceres is the ruler of Taurus instead. Other astrologers, still, use the former planets Pallas, Vesta, Juno and Hygiea in their delineations and rulership’s, for example Vesta to Taurus and Pallas to Virgo. Debate continues between those who consider the newly discovered planets as rulers or co-rulers of certain signs and those that do not. Some astrologers do not even use the astrological signs at all (mostly Cosmobiologists and Uranian Astrologers/Hamburg School). Therefore, they do not take into account planetary rulership’s and the essential dignities when interpreting an astrological chart. Note that, if one starts from Leo and Cancer, the traditional planetary rulers are arrayed outward in the same order from the sun as they occur in the natural solar system. The Lights ruling Leo and Cancer, Mercury ruling Virgo and Gemini, Venus ruling Libra and Taurus, Mars ruling Scorpio and Aries, Jupiter ruling Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn ruling Capricorn and Aquarius. The result is a symmetry of traditional rulership’s across the 0° Leo/Aquarius axis. Note that modern rulership’s, which attribute Pluto as ruler of Scorpio, break this symmetry.

Dignity and detriment, exaltation and fall

A traditional belief of astrology, known as essential dignity, is the idea that the Sun, Moon and planets are more powerful and effective in some signs than others, because the basic nature of both is held to be in harmony. By contrast, they are held to find some signs to be weak or difficult to operate in because their natures are thought to be in conflict. The most important of these categories are Dignity, Detriment, Exaltation and Fall. Dignity and Detriment: A planet is strengthened or dignified if it falls within the sign that it rules. In other words, it is said to exercise Rulership of the sign. For example, the Moon in Cancer is considered "strong" (well-dignified). Seventeenth century astrologer William Lilly compared rulership to a king on his throne, with considerable dignity. If a planet is in the sign opposite that which its rules (or is dignified), it is said to be weakened or in Detriment (for example, the Moon in Capricorn). In traditional astrology, other levels of Dignity are recognized in addition to Rulership. These are known as Exaltation (see below), Triplicity, Terms or bounds, and Face or Decan, which together are known as describing a planet's Essential dignity, the quality or ability to give of one's true nature. Contemporary traditional astrologers like John Frawley or J Lee Lehman explain further on the concept of Essential Dignity. Exaltation and Fall: In addition, a planet is also strengthened when it is in its sign of Exaltation. In traditional horary astrology, Exaltation denotes a level of dignity somewhat exaggerated compared to rulership. Exaltation was considered to give the planet (or what it signified in a horary chart) dignity, with the metaphor of an honored guest – who is the centre of attention but the extent of their ability to act is limited. Examples of planets in their Exaltation are Saturn (Libra), Sun (Aries), Venus (Pisces), Moon (Taurus), Mercury (Virgo, although some disagree to this classification), Mars (Capricorn), Jupiter (Cancer). A planet in the opposite sign of its Exaltation is said to be in its Fall, and thus weakened, perhaps seemingly more so than Detriment. The Planet in fall is passively rejected or ignored by the sign that it's in. It can be likened to a mayor of a rival city trying to make suggestions to the hosting mayor for how he should run his city: The host mayor finds it difficult to trust him and cannot see how his input could have relevancy to his city. The people of the city feel the same as their ruler. The result is impasse and failure on behalf of both mayors and the city.[31] There is no agreement as to the signs in which the three extra-Saturnian planets may be considered to be exalted. In addition to essential dignity, the traditional astrologer considers Accidental dignity of planets. This is placement by house in the chart under examination. Accidental dignity is the planet's "ability to act." So, we might have, for example, Moon in Cancer, dignified by rulership, is placed in the 12th house it would have little scope to express its good nature. The 12th is a cadent house as are the 3rd, 6th and 9th and planets in these houses are considered weak or afflicted. On the other hand, Moon in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th would be more able to act as these are Angular houses. Planets in Succedent houses of the chart (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) are generally considered to be of medium ability to act. Besides Accidental Dignity, there are a range of Accidental Debilities, such as retrogradation, Under the Sun's Beams, Combust, and so forth.

Additional classifications

Each sign can be divided into three 10° sectors known as decans or decanates, though these have fallen into disuse. The first decanate is said to be most emphatically of its own nature and is ruled by the sign ruler.[34] The next decanate is sub-ruled by the planet ruling the next sign in the same triplicity. The last decanate is sub-ruled by the next in order in the same triplicity. While the element and modality of a sign are together sufficient to define it, they can be grouped to indicate their symbolism. The first four signs, Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer, form the group of personal signs. The next four signs, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio form the group of interpersonal signs. The last four signs of the zodiac, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, form the group of transpersonal signs. Dane Rudhyar presented the tropical zodiac primary factors, used in the curriculum of the RASA School of Astrology. The tropical zodiac is the zodiac of seasonal factors as opposed to the sidereal zodiac (constellation factors). The primary seasonal factors are based on the changing ratio of sunlight and darkness across the year. The first factor is whether the chosen time falls in the half of the year when daylight is increasing, or the half of the year when darkness is increasing. The second factor is whether the chosen time falls in the half of the year when there is more daylight than darkness, or the half when there is more darkness than daylight. The third factor is which of the four seasons the chosen time falls in, defined by the first two factors.

Thus:

The winter season is when daylight is increasing and there is more darkness than daylight.

The spring season is when daylight is increasing and there is more daylight than darkness.

The summer season is when darkness is increasing and there is more daylight than darkness.

The autumn season is when darkness is increasing and there is more darkness than daylight.

Isa’s TRUE Personality: The Beautiful, Tortured, Selfless Moon Goddess of Love (Part 1)

Saix’s weapons are an absolute goldmine of esoteric symbolism. There’s no way I can cover it all in one post; there’s just too much. But I want to do a series analyzing everything, to show just how differently his character ended up in canon, compared to how it was originally conceived. I think the original idea for Isa’s character and his relationship with Lea is extremely unique and utterly fascinating. According to the symbolism, Isa’s TRUE personality is exactly as the title describes. A tortured, beautiful, selfless Moon Goddess of Love who was clearly intended as a love interest for Lea.

Part 1: The Tortured Moon Goddess

Saix’s title, Luna Diviner, is a reference to Selenomancy, named after the Goddess Selene. It is a specialized form of divination that examines the various aspects, phases, and appearances of the moon. According to diviners, moon phases are associated with certain personality types at the time of birth. There are several specific moon phases used as names for Saix’s weapons. Gibbous represents someone who is a healer and humanitarian. They care about other people; sometimes more than themselves. The pain and suffering of others is something that they are not only highly sensitive to, but also want to help transform.  

Balsamic Moon, is the waning crescent that is the trademark symbol on Isa’s jacket. It’s the final phase of the moon. This is a phase of decline and darkness—a rich opportunity for your soul to experience. It is considered the most Yin or Feminine phase. Balsamic means soothing or restorative. If you are born under this Moon, you will be aged and mature in some way. Balsamics are quiet, retiring and resilient; they are often seen as “old souls”. They are complex and wise beyond their years, as well as loners who usually only enjoy the company of a select group of people.  

New Moon is also known as the Dark Moon. It is the phase where the Moon’s energy is weakest. Even though the New Moon is invisible in the sky, those born under it are cloaked in darkness. They tend to lack self-awareness. They may be known for being selfish, callous, or unable to see things from other people’s perspectives. This weapon has the same shape as Berserker and Werewolf.

Saix’s Pandora Gear is Dichotomy. This word has several definitions. It means “a division or contrast between two things that are entirely different.” Or, “the phase of the moon in which half its disk appears illuminated.” It represents the clear division between the past and the present, Isa and Saix.   

Many of Saix’s weapons incorporate ♐︎ the astrological symbol of Sagittarius into them. I believe ♐︎ is meant to represent Lea. Sagittarius is a part of the Fire Trigon of the Zodiac. As an archer, he is said to never fail in hitting the mark. Sagittarius represents the centaur Chiron, an immortal centaur, who was renowned for his gentleness. After being accidentally shot by a poison arrow, he was in agony, but unable to find release in death. So he decided to offer himself as a substitute for Prometheus, who was punished by the gods for giving fire to man. Zeus saw the kindness of Chiron and immortalized him in the stars.

Axel’s weapon Prometheus is a combination of ♐︎ and the symbol of Mars ♂, and ALSO ♋ the Cancer symbol. Mars was known as the Roman god of war. He was said to love the violence and conflict. He carried a spear that was often depicted as covered in blood. He was the patron God of soldiers and was worshiped prior to battle. Soldiers in the Roman Army prayed to Mars before battle, hoping that he would protect them and lead them to victory.

Selene is shaped like a torch combined with ♐︎ the symbol of Sagittarius. In ancient Greek mythology, Selene is the Titan goddess of the Moon and is said to drive her glowing chariot powered by beautiful white horses across the sky each night. Her symbols were the crescent moon, a chariot, and a torch. Selene was very well known mostly because of her beauty. She was a very peaceful goddess and did not approve of war. Her personality was said to be secluded and timid.

Most Ancient Greeks looked to her for healing. Selene also had many powers that you would not think a moon goddess would have. Mythology states that she had powers surrounding dreams, she could harness the ability to awaken intuition and she could also catalyze psychic visions. As the patron of femininity, she was known to have the power to ease childbirth, to inspire love, to mask reality, and to pierce illusion.

Artemis has been commonly associated with Selene. She was the goddess of the Moon, the ruling planet of Cancer, and the daughter of Zeus. Her personality was individualistic and free-spirited, yet kind. She was a patron goddess of hunting and childbirth, and she was also the protectress of little children and baby animals. In Greek mythology, Artemis was usually portrayed as a very tall, beautiful young maiden with a hunting bow the shape of a crescent moon and golden arrows. She is often accompanied by either a stag or a dog. One of her special talents is calming animals, meaning that when she walks near them they come towards her and become calm.

Artemis is one of the ‘virgin’ androgynous goddesses, along with Athena and Vesta. Due to her well-integrated masculine energy and independence, she possesses an introverted temperament, preferring solitude. She was also known to be friends with mortals. Her assets were courage, confidence, and strength (both mental and physical). Her weaknesses were vengeance, impulsiveness, and being quite aloof. She was afraid of men, which is why she used to live in the woods and only went for walks at night. She rarely had any male companions; she only loved one person, Orion, but she ended up unintentionally killing him due to trickery. In her pain she appealed to Zeus to immortalize Orion in the stars so she could be with him.

A quiet and cool-headed youth. Though he does come out of his shell when talking to his best friend Lea, toward others he is distant and untalkative. Often scolds Lea and his contrasting personality.

The design for the weapon Astrologia incorporates ♋, the sigil of Cancer into its design. Cancer is associated with Artemis, who is similar to people born under the sign of Cancer. They are very modest, shy, and extremely emotional individuals who love children and pets. Artemis exemplifies the caring, nurturing and protective qualities of the mother. Deeply intuitive and sentimental, Cancer can be one of the most challenging Zodiac signs to get to know, but they are sympathetic and very attached to the people they keep close.  

Being ruled by the Moon, they are mysterious— they can struggle with sharing their innermost feelings. They often don’t have enough coping and defensive mechanisms for the outer world, so they can be prone to introversion and slow to warm to strangers. Cancers are quick to retreat into their shells if it suits their mood. The crab is a perfect symbol for the Cancer sign, symbolizing how a sensitive soul hides beneath a tough exterior.

A Cancer is caring and vulnerable, however callous they may appear on the outside. They are introspective and serene folk, who love solitude yet care gently for the people surrounding them. This receptive nature, however, makes them easily hurt. Cancer is the most emotional sign of the zodiac but at times they might appear icy and separated. Empathy for others is likely to be strong, and they will have an intuitive ability to sense what others need. They have a tendency to be quite clingy. Cancer’s shyness comes from their insecurity and deep fear of rejection. They are a cautious and shrewd people. 

Moon Rabbit is known as the Jade Rabbit in China. The Jade Emperor disguised himself into a poor, starving old man and begged for food from monkey, otter, jackal, and rabbit. Rabbit could only gather grass. Knowing well enough that grass can’t be offered as food to humans, rabbit decided to offer its own body, sacrificing itself in the fire the man had started. Somehow, though, rabbit wasn’t burned. The old man suddenly revealed himself to be the great Jade Emperor. Touched deeply by rabbit’s selfless sacrifice, he sent it to the moon to become the immortal Jade Rabbit.

More than just cute, fluffy, and white, the Jade Rabbit is a sign of selflessness, piety, and sacrifice. The Jade Rabbit is on the moon so that no matter where we are on Earth, we always have the ethics of righteousness and self-sacrifice to look up to. In East Asia, the Jade Rabbit is a widespread cultural symbol. When the bunny isn’t busy making immortality elixirs, it keeps the beautiful goddess Chang’e company in the Moon Palace.

Saix’s weapon Crescent is based on the Phoenix’s wings. This weapon represents the albedo stage of magnum opus. Following the chaos of the nigredo stage, albedo involves the washing away of impurities. In this process, the subject is divided into two opposing principles to be later coagulated to form a unity of opposites during rubedo. The aura is light blue, meaning truthfulness and serenity.

Psychologist Carl Jung equated the albedo stage with “unconscious contrasexual soul images; the anima in men and animus in women”. Jung described the animus as the unconscious masculine side of a woman, and the anima as the unconscious feminine side of a man, with each transcending the personal psyche. This makes albedo a phase where insight into the shadow side of the self is gained, while inflated ego is removed from the psyche.

So, that makes it VERY interesting that the weapon has a similar shape to ⚸. Even if they never planned to actually show it explicitly, the writers seemed to be inspired by Black Moon Lilith. Which raises very disturbing (though very interesting) implications about what happened during the experiments on the “darkness of the heart”. It would certainly explain how Axel’s personality became so warped. It would also explain why he didn’t find Saix’s personality change that unexpected, either, and why Axel seemed to always give him the benefit of the doubt no matter how cold he was. 

Astronomically, Lilith is considered an asteroid. Yet, some astrologers identify Lilith with the “Black Moon”. It’s the mathematical point that’s exactly in between the earth and the moon–essentially, empty space. Astrologically, it represents the cosmic void; the very energy Black Moon Lilith embodies. Psychologically, it is a point that represents how we react to emptiness and isolation. It brings up deep and primal issues like repressed feelings of rejection, rage, and the refusal to give in. This particular archetype is associated with sex, death, obsession, addiction, transformation, resurrection, magic, the occult and the taboo. These things are seen as the entry way between the spiritual dimension (or the underworld), and life on the physical plane.

Put simply, Lilith is the dark side of the moon. She represents animus, the feminine shadow side—What society rejects as appropriate for the feminine, Lilith takes up. The vilest manifestations of sexuality like pedophilia, rape, and satanic ritual abuse are all the domain of Lilith. She was actually said to be a hermaphrodite, so she could act as both a succubus and an incubus. Trauma based mind-control, through the use of sexual torture is another area connected with Black Moon Lilith. She symbolizes the transformation that occurs after going through a dark night of the soul. Usually, the trigger is great suffering, mourning, pain or torture. I can only imagine what poor Lea and Isa must have gone through.

Astrologically, Chiron (Sagittarius) stands in total opposition to Black Moon Lilith and all she represents. He is a symbol to remind us to look at the vulnerabilities we face in light of our connection to Divinity. Through the exploration of our wounds, we are called to heal all that creates a rift or disconnection with our Spirit.

What’s Up - June 2018

What’s Up For June?

Jupiter and Venus at sunset, Mars, Saturn and Vesta until dawn.

First up is Venus. It reaches its highest sunset altitude for the year this month and sets more than two hours after sunset.

You can't miss Jupiter, only a month after its opposition--when Earth was directly between Jupiter and the Sun.

The best time to observe Jupiter through a telescope is 10:30 p.m. at the beginning of the month and as soon as it's dark by the end of the month.  

Just aim your binoculars at the bright planet for a view including the four Galilean moons. Or just enjoy Jupiter with your unaided eye!

Saturn is at opposition June 27th, when it and the Sun are on opposite sides of Earth. It rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. Great Saturn viewing will last several more months. The best views this month will be just after midnight.

All year, the rings have been tilted wide open--almost 26 degrees wide this month--giving us a great view of Saturn's distinctive rings.

The tilt offers us a view of the north polar region, so exquisitely imaged by the Cassini spacecraft.

Near Saturn, the brightest asteroid--Vesta--is so bright that it can be seen with your unaided eye. It will be visible for several months.

A detailed star chart will help you pick out the asteroid from the stars. The summer Milky way provides a glittery backdrop.

Finally, Mars grows dramatically in brightness and size this month and is visible by 10:30 p.m. by month end.

The best views are in the early morning hours. Earth's closest approach with Mars is only a month away. It's the closest Mars has been to us since 2003.

A Morning Moon and a Meteor Shower, Jupiter Cruises Past a Cluster, and Some Southerly Sights!

Southern Delta Aquariids Meteor Shower

The Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower runs annually from July 21 to August 23. It is caused by the Earth passing through a cloud of tiny particles dropped by a periodic comet – likely Comet 96P/Machholtz and the shower will peak before dawn on Sunday, July 28, but is quite active for a week surrounding that date. This shower commonly generates 15-20 meteors per hour at the peak, but is best seen from the southern tropics, where the shower’s radiant, in Aquarius, is positioned higher in the sky. The waning crescent moon on the weekend should not adversely affect the shower very much. 

To increase your chances of seeing meteors, find a dark location with lots of sky, preferably away from light polluted skies, and just look up with your unaided eyes. Binoculars and telescopes are not useful for meteors because their fields of view are too narrow to fit the streaks of meteor light. Don’t watch the radiant. Any meteors near there will have very short trails because they are travelling towards you. Try not to look at your phone’s bright screen – it’ll ruin your night vision. And keep your eyes heavenward, even while you are chatting with companions. Happy hunting!

The Moon and Planets

The rest of July will bring us dark evening skies worldwide. That’s because the moon will be rising after midnight and waning in phase and brightness. So grab your bug spray and binoculars, or dust off the old telescope, and set up in a spot with a low and open southern horizon. I’ll tour you through the scorpion, the teapot, and the shield in this week’s Skylights! 

Tonight, the waning gibbous moon (i.e., more than half illuminated) will rise at about midnight local time. For the rest of the week, the moon will shift eastward and wane in phase while it slides towards next week’s meeting with the sun. The moon will be rising later every night, but the night-to-night difference will be much less than the usual 40 to 50 minutes. That’s because the angle between the eastern horizon and the moon’s orbit is smaller at this time of the year.

From Tuesday to Saturday before dawn, the moon’s orbit will carry it just above Cetus (the Whale), flying like a drone from the beast’s tail to his head. On Friday morning, the pretty crescent moon will sit about two finger widths to the upper left of the main belt asteroid Vesta. Look for a medium-bright star named Lambda Ceti sitting about four finger widths to the right of the moon. Vesta will be located a small distance below, and about halfway along, a line joining the moon and that star. Vesta will be visible as a little pinpoint in binoculars and telescopes.

On Saturday morning, the crescent moon will land a palm’s width to the upper right (celestial west) of the big triangle of stars that form Taurus the Bull’s face. People in Asia and Australia can see the moon pass directly through those stars, including the bright, orange star Aldebaran, which marks the bull’s angry southern eye. When skywatchers in the Americas see the moon again on Sunday morning, it will be positioned to the lower left (celestial east) of Aldebaran. 

Keep an eye out for the moon in the morning daytime sky this week. On Wednesday it will reach its last quarter phase, when its western half is illuminated. Last quarter moons always rise around midnight and remain visible in the southern sky all morning. They are positioned ahead of the Earth in our trip around the sun. About 3½ hours later, Earth will occupy that same location in space. 

The planets are spread along the Ecliptic (which closely expresses the plane of our Solar System) from sunset to sunrise. Reddish Mars has been steadily fading from view as it slips downward towards the evening sun. Your best chance to see Mars is to look low in the north-northwestern sky for a short time after 9 pm local time.

Jupiter is the extremely bright, white object shining in the southern evening sky. This week, Jupiter will be visible from dusk until almost 3 am local time. Even a backyard telescope can show Jupiter’s two main equatorial stripes and the four Galilean moons named Io, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede. The moons always form a rough line flanking the planet. If you see fewer than four, then some are either in front of Jupiter or hidden behind it. 

Jupiter will do something interesting this week, and then it will repeat it a month from now! On the evenings surrounding Friday, July 26, Jupiter’s orbital motion will carry it close past a globular star cluster designated NGC 6235, which is located in the southern sky in the constellation of Ophiuchus (the Serpent-Bearer). At closest approach on July 26, the bright planet will sit only 4 arc-minutes above the cluster. (For comparison purposes, the full moon is 30 arc-minutes across.) You can start looking for the cluster starting tonight. It will be located to Jupiter’s right (celestial west), but your telescope will flip the directions around. 

That star cluster is located about 38,000 light-years away, while Jupiter will only be 38 light-minutes from Earth! Both objects will fit within the field of view of a backyard telescope at medium power. To better see the dim, fuzzy globular cluster, try placing the bright planet just outside your field of view. Binoculars might work, too – if your sky is very dark! 

From time to time, the small, round black shadows cast by the Galilean moons become visible in amateur telescopes as they cross (or transit) Jupiter’s disk. On Tuesday night, Europa’s small shadow will be transiting the northern part of Jupiter from 11:45 pm to 2 am EDT. On Wednesday night, Ganymede’s larger shadow will be transiting the northern part of Jupiter from 11:30 pm to 1:45 am EDT. On Saturday, July 27, Io’s mall shadow will cross from 10:50 pm to 1 am EDT, with the Great Red Spot joining the fun after 11:45 pm.

Speaking of the spot, due to Jupiter’s rapid 10-hour rotation period, the Great Red Spot (or GRS) is only observable from Earth every 2nd or 3rd night, and only during a predictable three-hour window. The GRS will be easiest to see using a medium-sized, or larger, aperture telescope on an evening of good seeing (steady air). If you’d like to see the Great Red Spot in your telescope, it will be crossing the planet on Tuesday evening from 8:30 to 11:30 pm EDT and on Thursday night from 10:15 pm to 1:15 am EDT.

Yellow-tinted Saturn will remain visible all night long this month. Its position in the sky is just to the upper left (celestial east) of the stars that form the teapot-shaped constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer). Saturn is quite a bit dimmer than Jupiter. To find it, look about 3 fist diameters to the lower left (east) of Jupiter. Dust off your telescope! Once the sky is dark, even a small telescope will show Saturn's rings and several of its brighter moons, especially Titan! Because Saturn’s axis of rotation is tipped about 27° from vertical (a bit more than Earth’s axis), we can see the top surface of its rings, and its moons can appear above, below, or to either side of the planet. During this week, Titan will migrate counter-clockwise around Saturn, moving from below Saturn tonight (Sunday) to the upper right the planet next Sunday. (Remember that your telescope will flip the view around.) 

For night owls, distant and dim, blue Neptune is in the southeastern pre-dawn sky, among the stars of Aquarius (the Water-Bearer). The planet will be rising before 10:30 pm local time this week. You’ll find the magnitude 7.9 Neptune sitting a thumb’s width to the left (east) of a medium-bright star named Phi (φ) Aquarii.

Blue-green Uranus will be rising at about midnight local time this week. It is sitting below the stars of Aries (the Ram) and is just a palm’s width above the head of Cetus (the Whale). At magnitude 5.8, Uranus is bright enough to see in binoculars under dark skies.

In a similar situation to Mars, Venus is barely bright enough to see within the pre-dawn twilight sky that surrounds it. It is sitting very low in the northeastern sky - sinking ever-closer to the rising sun. Venus will be rising at about 5:30 am local time all week. By the end of the week, Mercury will climb over the horizon to join Venus. The swift innermost planet will become easier to see next week.

Touring the Dark July Southern Sky

With the moon rising after midnight and waning in phase and brightness, let’s grab bug spray and binoculars, or dust off the old telescope, and set up in a spot with a low and open southern horizon – for a tour through the scorpion, the teapot, and the shield! 

Once it’s getting nice and dark, face south and look for the Milky Way rising from the southern horizon between Jupiter and Saturn. (Those two planets will only be embracing the Milky Way this summer. They’ll move east of it next year.) Due to haziness near the horizon, and more of Earth’s intervening atmosphere, The Milky Way will be easier to see higher in the sky, where it passes directly through Cygnus (the Swan). By midnight local time, the great swan will be nearly overhead. The rest of the Milky Way will descend to the northeast. It thins as it passes through the “W” of Cassiopeia (the Queen) and Perseus (the Hero) because that area represents the outer edge of our galaxy’s disk. 

Looking due south again - in late July, the distinctive constellation of Scorpius (the Scorpion) reaches its peak elevation over the southern horizon after dusk. Jupiter is spending this year in the sky just northeast of that constellation’s brightest star, orange-tinted Antares, the “Rival of Mars”. Three white, medium-bright stars aligned in a roughly vertical line to the west of Antares mark the creature’s claws today – however the major stars of neighboring Libra (the Scales) used to take that role. The rest of the scorpion extends to the south, curling eastward into the Milky Way, and terminating in a bright double star named Shaula, which marks the poisonous stinger. Observers above mid-northern latitudes will struggle to see the southerly stars of the constellation. For Moana fans, the Maori people of New Zealand consider those same stars to represent Maui’s fish hook pulling the Milky Way up every night!

For contrast with cool, reddish Antares, look at the two hot, white stars, both named Al Niyat, that flank the red supergiant. Magnitude 3.1 Al Niyat I (also known as Sigma Scorpii) is located 2 finger widths to the upper right of Antares. It is a B1-class star with a surface temperature of 36,200 K. Magnitude 2.8 Al Niyat II is located 2.25 degrees to the lower left of Antares. Also known as Tau Scorpii, it is a B0-class star with a surface temperature of 30,000 K. At 734 light-years from the sun, Al Niyat I is nearly twice as far away as Al Niyat II. Use binoculars to find a fuzzy patch that is sitting just a finger’s width to Antares’ lower right. It is a globular star cluster named Messier 4. 

Late July evenings bring us one of the best asterisms in the sky, the Teapot in Sagittarius (the Archer). This informal star pattern features a flat bottom formed by the stars Ascella on the left and Kaus Australis on the right, a triangular pointed spout pointing right, marked by the star Alnasl, and a pointed lid marked by the star Kaus Borealis. The stars Nunki and Tau Sagittarii form its handle. The asterism is low in the sky, but it reaches maximum height above the southern horizon around midnight local time, when it will look as if it’s serving its hot beverage – with the steam rising as the Milky Way. By the way – the centre of our galaxy is located just 4.5 finger widths to the upper right of Alnasl!

Next, use your binoculars to explore the rich star fields and nebulae sprinkled along the Milky Way above Sagittarius. The bright star clusters known as Ptolemy’s Cluster (also designated Messier 7), the Sagittarius Star Cloud (Messier 24), and Messier 25 will appear as compact, bright, white clouds in binoculars. You can also look for the bright knots of nebulosity comprising the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8), the Omega / Swan Nebula (Messier 17), and the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16). Higher up, you’ll discover more good clusters, including Messier 39 and Messier 29 in Cygnus, Caldwell 16 in Lacerta (the Lizard), the Wild Duck cluster (Messier 11) and Messier 26 in Scutum (the Shield). Use your backyard telescope for a closer look! 

Scutum (the Shield) was created by Johannes Hevelius in 1683 by taking some of the stars from next-door Aquila (the Eagle). The small constellation (84th out of 88 by area) occupies some prime celestial real estate along the summertime Milky Way. Scutum, which reaches its highest position over the southern horizon at midnight local time in late July, has a background of rich star fields, which are overlain by some fine open star clusters, including the aforementioned Wild Duck Cluster. Use binoculars to trace out the dim stars that form the constellation and then follow up with your telescope.

The First Asteroid Ever Discovered

On the night of January 1, 1801, Giuseppe Piazzi, a priest in Palermo, Italy, was mapping the stars in the sky. Over three nights, he'd look at and draw the same set of stars, carefully measuring their relative positions.

That night, he measured the stars. The next night, he measured them again. To his surprise, one had moved. The third night, the peculiar star had moved again. This meant it couldn't be a star at all.

It was something new, the first asteroid ever discovered, which Piazzi eventually named Ceres. Asteroids are bits of rock and metal that orbit the Sun. At over 900 kilometers across, Ceres is a very large asteroid. But through a telescope, like Piazzi's, Ceres looked like a pinpoint of light similar to a star. In fact, the word asteroid means star-like. You can tell the difference between stars and asteroids by the way they move across the sky. Of course, Piazzi knew none of that at the time, just that he had discovered something new. To learn about Ceres, Piazzi needed to track its motion across the sky and then calculate its orbit around the Sun. 

So each clear night, Piazzi trained his telescope to the heavens. Night after night, he made careful measurements, but from his observations he learned that Ceres was only visible in the sky during the day. It would take another year and a lot of astronomers to nail down Ceres’ path, but we haven’t lost track of it since.

Today, we can do something that Piazzi could only dream of: send spacecraft to study asteroids up close. One spacecraft called Dawn journeyed billions of kilometers over four years to the main asteroid belt. There, it visited Ceres and another asteroid, Vesta. Dawn's stunning images transformed Piazzi's dot of light into a spectacular landscape of craters, landslides, and mountains.
