Thoughts on Heartstopper Season 2!

🛑🛑 SPOILERS AHEAD 🛑🛑

I really liked the way they switched events around but still incorporated all the main events / convos / quotes!! Like Ben asking for an apology, but instead of doing it at Tara's Bday party, they had Harry try to come in & get rejected & gave Ben's moment more depth and gave Charlie a more specific speech to be like "no, I don't forgive you, and I don't want you in my life. GTFO"

I absolutely loved every single one of Elle's outfits. And the dynamic between Elle & Tao developing their relationship! And I really really liked that we got more Tao backstory. His interactions with his mom, his heart to hearts with Nick (esp about his dad & relationship insecurities; we love a self aware king), his awkward first date with Elle at the theater

I liked Elle having more trans and non-binary friends!! And her art school journey!! Yes, give me more insight into each character's world

Naomi & Felix were iconic and I hope to see more of them! I liked that their presence also drew out Tao's insecurities and forced him to confront them. Like at the art show!!

I of course loved more focus on Tara & Darcy! I'm glad it wasn't just "Darcy is afraid to say I love you :/" and more was revealed about her homophobic parents and toxic home life! And oh my god the moment of Tara walking up to Darcy's house to check on her and meeting her mom for the first time had me SCARED. I was literally hiding behind my partner’s shoulder

I think the pacing still felt really good. And even though I knew what path the story was headed, it still felt natural when they switched things up. They maintained faithful to the original narrative while effectively adapting it to a TV show format, which is honestly SUPER impressive

And I am glad they kept in Charlie's mental health!! I think all the small switches they made really draw attention to how difficult it can be to notice an ED, anxiety, OCD, etc in someone else, even a partner. And they found good ways to express that anxiety with different conflicts and situations

IMOGEN. That girl is so bisexual. I called it last season. The vibes. The hair dye. The insistence on being "an ally." And she's totally falling for Sahar and I am HERE FOR IT.

ISSAC. I really really liked his whole arc with James. Asking Charlie how he knew he had a crush on Nick, relating to most of it, testing the waters with a kiss, and then being confused. Taking to the aroace artist at Elle's exhibition. Going back to that oh so centrally placed Ace book from earlier in the season & happily skipping off with it. I am so happy for him

TORI. Iconic, truly. Love all of her appearance and threats to people who could hurt Charlie. THE PHONE KICK SCENE, AHH. I really hope season 3 gets some sprinkles from Solitaire. They kinda hinted at some stuff to come by calling attention to Ben switching to Highs instead of staying at Truham. But I cannot wait for Michael to be introduced and the chaos to ensue.

One of the things I love about Heartstopper is that it shows healthy queer relationships, with the exception of one (we’ll get to it). Yes, I know that this is a topic that’s been said all before but I wanted to add my piece! Now, let’s talk about consent!!

I hear a lot of people go like “don’t ask ‘can i kiss you’ before ! It ruins the moment.” That’s complete bs and Heartstopper shows us this. ESPECIALLY with the fact that two of the main characters (Nick and Tara) are still coming to terms with themselves and may not be comfortable showing PDA. It gives them the opportunity to control their own coming out journeys because neither partners (Charlie or Darcy) forces or shames them into doing anything, especially if they were to say no.

Here’s some examples of what i mean.

NICK AND CHARLIE’S FIRST KISS: Charlie asks Nick if he can kiss him, saying “would you kiss me?” in such a soft voice. It’s so good because Nick is admitting his feelings for the first time. It does give Nick a way out if he wasn’t ready!! However, he was. Ugh, my heart hurts every time (in a good way of course).

TARA AND DARCY’S KISS AT HARRY’S PARTY: if you watch a bit closer, you can see that Tara and Darcy nod to each other before the iconic kiss. It’s them saying “are you okay with this?” which is important because that entire scene was just an act of bravery and courage, especially for Tara. It’s her first time being public with Darcy. Beautiful.

NICK STOPPING IN THE PARK: This is a situation where a person did say no! Nick and Charlie were talking on the grass. Charlie asks Nick, after confessing how confused he was, “Do you wanna kiss? Would that make you feel better?” At first Nick did say yes, but stopped after he heard those people walking the dog. Charlie reassured Nick that it was okay, saying he doesn’t need to be sorry. He doesn’t pressure him or make him feel bad. It’s touching knowing what Charlie has been through. The last thing he wants is for Nick to feel or go through the same. Also… Charlie’s an actual good person, so there’s that!

ARCADE SCENE: After Nick gives Charlie (an adorable) bday gift in the arcade and they confirm that they really like each other, Charlie says he really wants to kiss Nick. Mind you, he doesn’t go in for a kiss right there or does anything to force/shame nick into giving one. Even after Nick says “okay” Charlie still asks “are you sure?” It’s such a big step in Nick’s arc to becoming more comfortable with his bisexuality. Charlie is, again, giving Nick that safe space to do so. Also !! Charlie didn’t out Nick when talking to Tao in the restroom !!

ELLE TELLING CHARLIE ABOUT TARA: Now, this one is subtle, but very important! Elle doesn’t out Tara when she tells Charlie there’s no chance that Tara likes Nick. Tara didn’t consent nor say she wants to come out as a lesbian to the entire school. Elle knew that wasn’t her call, it’s Tara’s. Even if Charlie’s gay himself, she still didn’t say it. If she did, I highly doubt any harm would come from it but it’s a nice detail to notice! Now onto someone we all hate…

BEN AND CHARLIE: This all juxtaposes the relationship with Ben + Charlie because that one lacked consent. I won’t get into complete details of why, but we know how toxic and manipulative Ben was to Charlie. It’s great that the show and the books tell us that this behavior isn’t okay and it’s actually beyond disgusting to it’s teenage target audience (but to all viewers honestly). It’s not romanticized. Even if internalized homophobia is the root cause, that’s no excuse. Nick is the foil to Ben. Nick was also struggling, but never once hurt Charlie like Ben did. Instead, he was a loving boyfriend that showed Charlie what real love looks like. The type of love that Charlie deserves.

All of this is to say that Heartstopper’s main couples are just a great example of healthy queer relationships that we can look to. I love this show for many reasons, and that’s just one of them. If you know more examples, lmk !! :)

They are INSISTING that THIS picture was taken after the Netflix event (when it was CLEARLY taken in Harry's Bar in Venice Italy!)

Aeltri: Jelly of a Next On Netflix luncheon that Ben went to for work, by himself? Those things are like business meetings with better food. The distinct lack of decorations,🍷and 🥂 is a dead giveaway. If OP thinks that's special they must live in their parent's basement. That's nothing compared to some of the events I've worked at for big corporate clients. One even rented out all of SF City Hall!

It was coming the day, Cody knew it, and that made him nervous. What day? His stupid assistant's birthday. Eri was not the brightest person, by far, but she was still one of the closest person he had, though not by his choice, per say.

Cody had thought of multiple things he could do for her. Maybe actually teaching something, but that was gonna probably cause the 5th lab fire this week, and the fire extinguisher was running low already. He also could try preparing something for her, but his skills on the kitchen were not as good as one would expect. He was running low on ideas each minute that passed, until he remembered the person that was most likely able to help, much to his displeasure.

"So... You came here to ask me for help, huh? What will I get in return?" BEN asked, with his arms crossed and a grin on his face.

"Listen here I am not asking for help, I am asking for advice, fucknuts. You are one of the only person who know her good, since you track her phone. What do you think would be a good birthday gift?" Cody was red from embarrassment of just having to ask BEN of all people.

Eri had gone back to the manor after going out with Nina, Clockwork and Zero to a birthday shopping spree. Though none of the girls shared the same aesthetic, they managed to have fun shopping each time, which always brightened the bimbo girl. She even bought this super adorbs frilly dress that she thought would look good with the lab coat Sir Cody got her.

Talking about it, she needed to get to the lab, she IS Sir Cody's super adorbs assistant, and he probably was having to handle all that brain consuming paper work. It's her birthday, but she needed to work. And maybe Eri really just wanted to be near Cody, but who could say?

When the girl reached the Lab, though, she heard another voice inside. Was Sir Cody doing an experiment on Toby again? No, the voice was different. Sounded like... BEN?

Cody opened the door to find Eri, which lead him on a spiral of thoughts before he mustered. "Finally you're here. I've been waiting for you to show for... Work. All day. I need you to come with your eyes closed. Don't ask questions."

"Oh okay Sir Cody! Did you... Prepare a surprise for little ol' me? Oh sir Cody..." The girl continued to blabber happily with her eyes closed, while Cody carefully guided her to a spot in the lab. He hoped she wouldn't burn everything accidentally this time.

He had to motion for Ben to put stuff at the right place quietly while he guided her to a beautiful cake that Cody bought.

"Can I open my eyes now?"

"Yeah just don't-"

Eri opened her eyes and let an excited happy scream of the lab being totally decorated in pink and with the beautiful pink cake. Omg did sir Cody do all of this for her? Oh and Ben is there too, what is he doing in here?

"... Overreact." Cody sighed "Me and BEN put this little party to you. For your birthday and stuff... And, uh..."

"Oh sir Cody I loved loved it!! Everything looks amazing! Oh i could give you a kiss from how happy I am!!"

Cody almost choked with what she said, and stood his hands up "not necessary."

He's also convinced that such a coincidence isn't a coincidence at all and is, in fact, further proof that the two of you were destined to be together.

Although he doesn't need to eat to survive, good luck stopping him from devouring everything within his path like a dinosaur. This calls for celebration, after all!

And knowing Ben, there will be many, many choices because - speaking simply - he loves food.

Only the ones he deems 'cool' will be invited, even though it literally takes place in the living room, and if somebody that wasn't on his mental list happens to show up, they will be shooed away with a kind shock to the buttocks. More than likely, they will leave after that, because someone seldom wants to end up being unable to sit down.

Perhaps a bit unconventional but hey, they won't listen to him any other way. At least he has something to use against them.

And since he is a ghost, it's a little hard to retaliate.

Expect to have party games galore.

Pin the tail on the donkey, spin the bottle, seven minutes in heaven, beer pong. Anything you could think about or ever desire to play, it will be there.

Also sick jams will be playing loudly through the speakers that he definitely didn't steal from Amazon.

Ben doesn't know the first thing about dancing but he will try.

And proceed to look like an idiot.

But as long as the both of you are having fun, who cares?

He certainly doesn't. The majority of the Manor's residents already think poorly about him, anyway.

In short, it will be chaotic, but a good time will surely be had. Just help him plan it and everything will be fine (hopefully). After all, this is as much your party as it is his, and he wants you to feel included!

When they're getting ready to leave for Violet's party, Sophie makes a remark about how excited she was to see everyone's reactions when they revealed Benedict had made the cake - but to her surprise her husband asked her not to say a word, wishing for her complicity in deceiving their family, wondering if anyone would notice a difference. Sophie goes along with it, assuming it to be a one off, and both she and Benedict are delighted when she receives glowing reviews for what they believe to be her cake. But from then on, Benedict keeps beating her to it in making cakes for all the birthdays and special occasions and as thrilled as she is that her husband had evolved into a top-notch baker, he still insists on pretending to everyone that she's still the maker of cakes in the family. Sophie fails to see why he wouldn't want the credit but he just smirks and tells her the biggest compliment is nobody being able to tell the difference between the cakes he produces and the ones she's previously made. And she's able to go along with it for awhile without feeling guilty as her husband's knowing grin across the room is enough to satiate her, but it starts to take its toll on her when everyone keeps singing her praises cake after cake after cake. She feels unbelievably disingenuous for allowing everyone to think she's still responsible for baking the masterpieces Benedict's been whipping up, and she desperately wants to come clean but her husband keeps insisting they keep it to themselves and relish keeping such a secret. But her frustration reaches fever pitch at little Aggie's birthday party especially when her darling niece cuddles her and thanks her profusely for such a wonderful cake, and it's then that Sophie finally blurts out the secret she's been harbouring for an entire year. Everyone stares at her for a moment only for Phillip to crack a smile and say "Nice one, Soph!" and everyone else starts laughing, leaving Sophie stunned that they all think she's merely having them on. "No, he really has been making them! He's made every last cake since Violet's birthday last year, I swear!" she insists but nobody pays her any mind and joke along with her. "But why would they think I'd come out with something like that? Why didn't they believe me?" Sophie would shake her head later on after they had returned home and they were getting dressed for bed. "You know how disastrous a cook I was before we met - they simply wouldn't believe someone even as talented as you could manage to mould me into a half decent baker." Benedict hummed as he wound his arms around her. "But doesn't that annoy you?" she asked. "No; what annoys me is that you revealed a secret I explicitly told you keep quiet." he said with a gravelly voice, his eyes darkening. "And now I've got to teach you a lesson." he smirked against her skin as he nipped against her jawbone and gave her bottom a smack. And from then on Sophie continued to claim Benedict made the cakes at any given Bridgerton gathering, not even remotely caring that everyone still thought she was joking; all she cared about was the small shake of the head Benedict gave her, knowing he'd teach her yet another lesson when they got back home.
