But they haven't told Lark or Sparrow yet! Frankly, they've been avoiding bringing it up, thinking maybe they could try and do this thing without them knowing. No need to start a fight, right? Especially from Lark. They assumed he'd have the strongest reaction. So, they keep procrastinating--TJ most of all. The day of the 'show' arrives. Nicky and Grant have gone on ahead of him as he finishes preparing. He's taking awhile with the prep due to anxiousness--performance jitters maybe or could be that sinking feeling in his stomach? Either way, he's finally adding the gilded head piece--a sleek crown of shimmering gold. And that's when the twins walk in to the storage room. They immediately spot someone dressed a lot like a certain cult leader. Lark stops at the entrance and glares over to who he assumes must be Terry--sure there's all the shitty fabrics that evil geezer used to wear on him. But he can still see the familiar brown watch Terry likes to wear on the person's left wrist. That one that TJ had the rest of them carve their names into (on the inside of the watch band). He's about to bark out a question (mostly like a 'what the fuck are you doing' sorta question)-- Except, his sibling casts something first: "Poison Spray"

“not really a question but my dog just died and it sucks. its quiet, almost weird without him” nick reads yet another confession thing.

you were in another car video with the boys where people would submit questions, things they need advice on, ect. i know, original. 

you were the first one to answer. “what my dad did for me is i have this necklace.” you say leaning forward and showing the camera the necklace. whenever you were in a car video you and matt sat in the front and nick and chris were in the back. chris and nick never knew why matt insisted on you sitting in the front, they just assumed it was a ‘ladies first’ respect type of thing. “and its like.. a mini urn. it has half of my dogs ashes in it and my dad has the rest. so if you think having something like that would help, you can do that maybe.”

“and like- you know, dont be like rushing trying to get another dog or pet or something. just take your time. you might not ever want to get another dog you know? and thats fine too.” chris added.

after a few more questions this specific one didnt get an audible answer right away.

“so im dating this guy but he wants to keep our relationship a secret and at first it was cool and thrilling and it still is but im scared itll get boring i guess and well loose interest.” nick reads.

you and matt look at each other for a couple seconds, him slightly smirking. you two quickly look away from each other when you notice chris was looking at the two of you, trying not to laugh. 

“....what was THAT?!” nick askes abruptly loud leaning it to the console of the front seats. 

“what was what?” you laugh.

“you and matt! looked at each other. like REALLY weirdly.”

matt nervously laughs blushing a bit.

“and matts blushing!” chris squeals pointing at matt.

you snort out of how long theyve been completely oblivious. 

“do you want to tell them or should it?” you ask to which matt just responds by sinking down into his seat. “ok i will then. me and matt are daitingg!” you enthusiastically say with jazz hands. 

nick turns his head, still in the center console to look as matt. “mAatuh!” nick yells hitting matt. 

“stop hitting me i didnt do anything-”

chris pops his head in-between the space of the car doors and the passenger seat to look at you. “and you didnt tell us??” chris talks over nick, his face being extremley close to yours. 

“well the conversation never came up! what were we supposed to do? just randomly come up to you and be like ‘were dating! ok wanna get some food?”

“shut up!” nick yells leaning back, back into the middle seat. “were all talking at the same time and i cant understand anyone! matt, how. long.” nick asks making you laugh slightly at his wording.

“ok really y/n?”

“four months.” matt mumbles smiling. 

“FOUR MONTHS??” nick repeats loudly making all of you laugh.

“YEAH!!” matt says matching the loudness of nick voice.

you feel chris fall into your seat and hear his breathless laughter.

“TWO MORE MONTHS AND ITLL BE HALF OF A YEAR MATT!” nick continues. 

“i know that, i know how many months are in a year.”

well okay this ask just made my whole day what the hell, this is what i like about comics the most, just sharing and talking about them

anyway, from the top, theres this superhero team in a world without jl, they work for the un and they are called stormwatch!

the first stormwatch comic is stormwatch 1993, i tried to read it and its genuinely awful, BUT some time after it starts, warren ellis takes over and hes genuinely a new type of god and fixes the whole thing but full disclosure i havent read it properly cause the start is so bad

the second stormwatch is stormwatch 1997, also written by ellis (saver of worlds) where midnighter and apollo (do not separate) make their first appearance! its an incredibly solid introduction and it goes from chapter #4 to #6, u can skip the rest, wont lose much context

now we start with the big guns, stormwatch is dismantled and the authority is created, a superhero (antihero) team working outside the law, and it starts with the authority 1999, where midnighter (and apollo do not separate) are finally main characters, i genuinely loved this comic so much SO MUCH

the story continues with the authority 2003, which im currently reading and is not by ellis (patron of writers), so i cannot tell u yet how itll work out but im enjoying it thus far

then (cause i havent read more stuff in between yet) comes midnighter 2007, this one is complicated? the first 10 chapters are extremely fun and enjoyable, basically episodic, mostly written by garth ennis (not quite as godly but pretty nice), then a new guy picks up the series, makes a whole saga with no apollo in it and its terrible so just... just drop it on chapter 10 ill allow it

then the n52 happens and its v confusing and scary

but then we have midnighter 2015, i have good and bad news, the bad news is its a grayson 2014 spinoff so u may be a bit lost on some context but the good news is this comic is REALLY good, its fun, its a finished story, its midnighter learning to be a person and not a killing machine, and its one of my favorite comics as of rn

lastly theres midnighter and apollo 2016 and like... i went to my bookstore to order a physical copy yesterday i am so in love with it, its aesthetically beautiful and the story is insane, basically midnighter goes to hell to save apollo but apollo is already doing a pretty good job cause hes freaking apollo

as a bonus, there are three small stories, the authority: kev, the authority: more kev and the authority: the magnificent kevin all written by ennis about a guy called kevin who actively sucks as a person and how he manages to fuck up everything all the time and piss off midnighter to no end, they are hilarious

as a disclaimer of sorts: midnighters stories, specially the ones by ellis and ennis, are comics for adults in a way batmans arent, batman is dark and sometimes scary, but these comics talk about sex, drug adiction, racism, bigotry and make fun of them, i do bow for them though, they are gritty and pretty edgy but not tasteless

a very uncommon opinion i have is that he finds great but self harming and maladaptive comfort in the cellar and blizzard stages of his life.

to base this:

something ive seen a lot but disagree with is the claim that after their death they gained control, going as far as to become lowkey power hungry and enjoy and crave being treated as an authoriy. living its truth as a spooky spirit and generally being content with this life.

hat(and bow?) kid kind of pokes fun at that by calling him a tsundere and a big softy, but i never thought of it as her seeing him as a literal tsundere. she saw something he doesnt want to be viewed as and went with it to gain the strongest reaction, even if only in theory, while really meaning she doesnt think his behavior is sincere. this might look like im putting words in her mouth but i just genuinely always assumed this was the intention. its pretty in character, too - shes mischevious and childishly malicious at times. i think its fits. i also only bring this up because itll be important later

with the blizzard still present around vanessas manor, ice covering the subcon well from the inside and chunks of ice randomly forming around the forest i believe its fair to say it did not vanish on its own and is instead actively suppressed by something. considering snatcher provides an array of services to the subconites (granting them bodies, likely supervising the new vilages construction, maintaining community important structures via contractually obligated mortals - none of her contracts benefit her directly. they resemble community service far more, which is remarked on by hat/bow kid in her diary) it wouldnt be too far of a stretch to come to the conclusion its by his efforts the blizzard is contained - not to mention when first encountered he tells hat/bow she needs her to take care of "some other things, that i cannot do myself..." implying there ARE things it can and does get done! and its for the blizzards suppression specifically i believe it steals and absorbs souls.

(newer content typically has them claim they hate chores and use minions for everything which i choose not to take into account due to most of said content severely contradicting his main game appearance writing wise. i also think there was something that justified treating it as an unreliable narrator but i cant recall what exactly so i wont be using that argument to defend myself here. so, source: trust me)

this places snatcher in the place of a damage suppressor for the blizzard. this, if on its own, while an interesting dynamic, isnt much more than that. its effect on snatcher as a person is unknown. that is, unless you take his backstory into account.

the blizzard is typically interpreted to exist a result of vanessas actions and unlikely but possibly continued efforts, but i personally would claim its an extension of her, similarly to how the snatcher is an extension of the prince: its her soul and personal apocalypse externalized. its her.

in this way, snatcher, even after his death, is forced into a relationship with her ghostly presence infusing and dilluting subcon where it must expose itself to and suppress her. its a dehumanizing and horrible position to be in. something to note is that in the subcon layer of the tour rift snatchers tree is shown beneath the village, coveted in frost. it always was a deeply haunting thing to me, and now i realize it can be used as further proof that the village can only really exist at the price of snatcher enduring constant violence behind the scenes. i used to say this very likely acts as a parallel to princes and princess vanessas relationship before realizing its not a parallel, its an extension of it. its almost like he never left.

the only opportunity he ever got from the constant pressure and obligation to keep up a notably insincere appearance, being used as a tool to keep something that feels larger than anything it could ever be in check, was when he was abandoned to fall apart in vanessas cellar. he even calls it home once. ("this captain guy is great! his nasty smell and dead eyes remind me of home..")

i will be honest, im mixed on to what degree he is aware of any of this, in the timeframe of the ingame events at least, but if he does come to the conclusion hes been going in circles i dont doubt hed start craving the only place defined by the lack of vanessas presence.

i have a lot more to say such as why he initially chose to leave the cellar, what he thinks vanessas opinion on him is, or how exactly the subconites factor into their recovery, which is fully possible btw, but thats it for now. thanks for reading, now you have a bit more context to my art

if hes feeling affectionate towards her it might also wish to wander in the blizzard again.. since its an extension of her, its kind of the closest they can possibly get, literally residing inside her soul while still remaining isolated and staying out of her reach and sight. its also invasive creepy and miserable and completely erases all boundaries between the two of them

i like this little flashback because niki obviously realizes that wilbur will do what his dad says and its obvious his father wants him to play into tomys. and thats the game of politics niki knows there arent truly friends here, but its hard to watch someone youve trusted and had on your side for so long suddenly be pulled in a different direction due to this game and i think its also just niki’s own game in a way as she figures out what she must do and yeah its a balance

and thats another thing because they know each other the way friends do but they cannot be truly “friends” because of how this works

the thing with niki is that her and wilbur's friendship is very real and has existed for longer than they've been aware of the political games. it's a matter of is that friendship going to continue through all of this? how far can their relationship bend until it breaks completely? niki in no way thinks her friendship with wilbur is fake or over. but she's trying to figure out what matters more to him—is it loyalty to his father, or loyalty to her? is she ever going to be the most important person to him? or is she always going to be one step behind?

I dont talk about my fics here very much bc i tend to feel like im not a real writer, but in an effort to engage with the fandom and acknowledge that yes im out here doing my own thing, here's some links for anyone that might be interested.

If youve ever seen me talk about my OC, this fic is her canon story. Ive got TONS plotted out compared to what's written here, but every so often i post new chapters. Its a hard sell though. OCs are so niche, and even the character from source material is niche. A double whammy of why should anyone care. Its the most ive ever developed a story tho, so thats kind of cool. This is a Bruce/Wally JLU batflash fic that is not finished and hasnt been updated in a long time. Its 99% fluff. And i do have plans to work on it, but i hit a roadblock that i still havent resolved. So for now its on pause, but its had a really positive response from readers so far. Plus, i think its funny.

This is the big one. This was a continuation of a fic that hadnt updated in several years. I wrote it as an alternate timeline so as not to step on the author in case they ever came back. Anyway, the original was a huge batflash series that all fans of Bruce/Wally should read. It was so good. It had so many characters and threads, and I spent weeks studying it and taking notes in a huge spreadsheet to make sure i at least did it justice even if my timeline wasnt the true timeline. But yeah writing this really stretched my skills. Im very proud of how it turned out.

I have a lovehate relationship with writing and with fics, but man there is absolutely nothing like the feeling when someone comments that they enjoyed what you made. umm otherwise idk if this is controversial per se but this kind of monster is like one of my alltime favs and i think theyre underappreciated! theres a lot to do there! body horror! died-and-came-back-wrong trope shit! the existential horror of not only having a body but Being a body!

very tangential side note: i started reading allison bechdels "the secret to superhuman strength" today and like right at the beginning of the first chapter theres this line that goes "indeed, in those days, a body really wasnt something you were supposed to have until you were done with it" while talking about her father missing her birth to fetch a body for the family funeral home. what a good line. and how interesting to think about the way we draw invisible lines between what we consider Ourselves vs Our Bodies and how death obscures that. like, your body will be your body all your life whether youre aware of it as separate or a part of yourself but itll also continue to be your body when youre no longer in it. something to think about.

""liveblogging"" the first 10mins of the newest tom scott :D

THIS IS A LONG POST (press J to skip post)

(liveblogging in the sense that its live but itll only be one post, i guess this is spoilers but its a tom scott video so not sure what i would spoil, i also know VERY LITTLE about the subject of the video so dont expect me to start making peer-reviewed opinions on the content, this is about the video not the telescope. GO WATCH THE VIDEO!!)

(when i mention tom scott or 'him' im probably talking about tom scott as a channel and not as a guy, a lot of work goes into these videos by multiple people)

starting off with the title. pretty normal for a modern tom scott although the asterisk is interesting, i cant remember the last time he's clarified in the title, normally when he makes a 'hyperbolic' claim he explains it within the first few seconds of the video (this is why people like to talk about how he always 'gets to the point'). i suppose you could say that him putting '(yet)' at the end of the explosion measure-rer video is similar but here it feels more like a "tom knows that this is pretty much wrong" instead of a "this is technically true and here's why". the thumbnail is also standard for modern tom scott, he's become more familiar with the modern youtube 'guy pointing at/admiring thing' format and here he does it again, with the subject of the video in the background as usual.

the first surprising part of the video for me is the length, HALF AN HOUR!!! every time tom makes a long video its normally one of his best (itll be alright on the night is my favourite and in my opinion the best tom scott video (yes i like it more than the video about the youtube sponsor video (the origin of the vape meme (its not actually a vape!)))). from the length alone i know that this is a video i'll enjoy and so i metaphorically grab popcorn etc

now the video actually starts! he starts with himself in protective gear which is standard for his videos (except from when he does the 'this isnt what i expected' preamble which:) he does! he clarifies the title (as usual with the pseudo-clickbait titles) and talks about how he prepared a script etc etc, for a long scott video this is surprising, these long videos take ages to make so if he throws out the script something is different. and then:

TITLECARD!!

a titlecard essentially screams that this video will be high-production and GOOD. seeing writing credits is especially nice, with recent videos we can see tom acknowledge that it isn't just him making these, with 'alright on the night' there was a long end credit and for years he's put credits at the end of his videos, but here it is at the start, with himself in the same typesize and on the same level as his editor and script assistant, with an awesome rotating drone shot around the telescope (i think i would prefer if it was a drone shot at sunset for continuity with the previous section, but obviously getting shots at any time of day he chooses would be infeasible)

sidenote to talk about the captions. tom gets a company to caption his videos for him (caption+ by js* the majority of the time but i wouldnt be surprised if for some videos he gets someone else to do it). the reason i brought up the captions is that for voice-over the captions are in italic, which gets annoying to read long sentences of (yes i know academic papers and whatnot but idrc!!), in other videos captions for sentences spoken directly from tom 'in scene' are normally prepended by a dash, and voiceover is given no formatting, or alternatively no formatting for voiceover and tom gets his own colour. this switchup isnt major but i think i would prefer if it wasnt in italic, as first reading the captions it made me wonder if there was some sort of special reason it was in italic except from simply being in voiceover, but it seems there isnt.

re: 'scientists love giving names to telescopes like that', seeing tom scott make jokes in his videos or at least add a bit of humour to them is always nice, sometimes i feel his videos have become a bit too corporate and i loved the old stuff where it felt more personal (please PLEASE a return of matt and tom's park bench), so hoping that more jokes/casual moments are in the video, maybe even a post-credits quip. however for subjects like this where these videos are likely to come up in professional/educational settings, i can see that it makes sense to actually keep things professional (think tom on computerphile/language files)

tom clarifying that the agencies had no editorial control is sort of a given with tom scott videos, but its nice for him to clarify. sometimes in the comments therell be some random who gets mad at tom getting paid to cover it and paint it in a good light or whatever so its good that he almost immediately clears it up.

the way tom scott shows road footage and explains how he found his way around the site/area (the latter pretty usual for an 'unscripted' video) reminds me heavily of cgp grey's video on the tekoi test range, although that video is more of a vlog, so i guess tom's video reminds me of a vlog? not sure if thats a good thing or not

the footage of him walking through the residence with pristine blue pools and deck chairs while the voiceover explicitly states that its not a hotel is very funny, although necessary because i can imagine someone with more money than sense seeing this footage and buying a plane ticket to this middle-of-nowhere site in the desert because they want to be 'with the stars'

speaking of!!: tom scott's pinned comment (as of day of release) is weirdly poetic, 'and the stars were beautiful' originally made me think that it was a quote from hitchhiker's or a poem, but a search showed that no, tom just knows how to paint stories in peoples minds (and thats amazing)

another sidenote to mention the camerawork! a lot of the subjects tom covers are set in places like urban europe or some business park in california or whatever (the switzerland ones seem to be an exception with tom going all out with the camerawork, see the shooting range, the village with no cars etc, why does tom like switzerland so much??) so when its set in a place that looks cool it really makes the video a lot more engaging and tbh more awesomer, i love the shot of the petrol station and the wide shots of the 'village'

the drone shot of the very large telescope is also great, with simple 1080p im surprised by the quality of the rocky surface, and with 4k it feels like a movie. tom then completely negates this with the most whiplash-inducing offcentre blurry zoom on the extremely large telescope, i understand he wanted to show the distance between the site and the telescope but i feel he couldve done better. he then (i think) reuses the rotating drone shot from the titlecard but i think its cool so i dont mind

also: tom is quite clearly filming the voiceover from either the uk or somewhere in europe or america, and it is painfully obvious that he was at home/in a hotel and went 'i need a nondescript place to shoot, this forest near me will do'. if i was good at geoguessing/osint/geocaching(?) i would find where this forest is but im not so the 'telescope voiceover forest' will forever be unknown :(

this video has chapters but im not going to pick up on them too much because its a long tom scott video, so of course therell be chapters. does make the video cooler though. what i will pick up on is the uv index sign, which i cant describe any more than it just 'fitting', theres this vibe around it that makes the quick succession of shots much better and i cant figure out why, maybe because its a clearly man-made thing among nature or because you have to pause and focus on what it is saying to read it, either way i like it.

..and theres the twist that explains the title. most tom scott videos with these sorts of titles will have a twist of some sort that isnt a complete lie but helps to "clarify" the truth, here it being that its actually multiple telescopes! (:O) these sorts of twists have become mainstays of toms content now so there really isnt much to say, other than that it was there i guess

moving on though we have the first interview (an actual mainstay of a tom scott video). again i cant say much about the content of the interview other than the fact that the interviewee is wearing an awesome hoodie, especially fitting for an astronomer. i can imagine him coming into work beaming that he gets to wear his space hoodie for his space job where he researches space. this man is GOALS. what i will say though is that the 8.2 metres wasn't converted to imperial, which is what tom normally does for measurements, so i'll be the saving grace and say that 8.2 metres = 968.50393701 barleycorn. thank me later. the interviewee's captions were in a different colour (yellow) which is standard, and makes it even funnier when the yellow switches to tom's white when he explains the mirror mistake.

tom making callbacks to previous videos is always nice, its something he's started quite recently, presumably with the channel slowing down, sort of a 'protagonist reflects on the adventures theyve had', it also appeals to people who have watched lots of tom scott (like myself >:])

something that happens when tom interviews a super-expert on a topic is when he rephrases something or observes something (here being the precision of the telescope) and the interviewee just sort of brushes it aside, with the interviewee affirming with what seems almost passive-agressive responses (here being the shortest 'yeah' ever). i get that tom phrases it like this for the viewers, or so that he can understand himself, but it must irk the expert when the guy interviewing you is surprised that optical telescopes have to be precise

tom's gopro skills have definitely improved over the years, but i think they may be too good now, as i can see toms finger trace the path between all of the points on the telescope. this is really cool but seeing toms finger in the corner of the screen with the narration makes it feel like an interactive cutscene in the last of us, i feel like i should have an option to pick whether to be nice or mean to tom.

i feel like ive mocked tom a bit too much so im going to instead compliment him on how good of an interviewer he is. the classic rephrase/observation that i mentioned earlier is a great way to ask questions that although he might know the answer to, the viewers might not and the content of the questions and the attention to detail is just great. whenever i have a question its less than 20 seconds later that tom makes an observation and the question is answered.

the pov at 8:36!!! again with the your choices matter rpg cutscene tom!! theres also another unconverted metric with 30cm and 60m but im not going to make the joke again (i think tom said in a q&a on the park bench that he may only convert imperial to metric and not vice versa? i looked for the clip and couldnt find it and also i wouldnt be able to include the barleycorn joke so whatever)

unfortunately the reason why you could only find subs for #1 and #2 is that EN fan subs have only managed to get to blue glitter atm. thats because the general rule of thumb is to wait for the Bluray Disc copies of the plays to release so that they can translate the """"official version""" (since, ykno, stageplays by nature are never the same as each other) and #3 BD only released july this year while edel delight was literally held (iirc) just this feb 2022 so its gonna take awhile :')

a relatively recent additional side concern reason of waiting for the BD releases is like... plausible deniability of sorts? because revstar only started allowing international streaming with Blue Glitter actually so, originally really, we Do have to wait for the BD to even see what went down in the plays.

now we got international streams so translators can Technically start working on the plays earlier BUT since japan takes its copyright piracy laws really Seriously, posting screenshots of a play that should have only been livestreamed would shout to the company that ppl are pirating the show rather than paying so they might remove the international streaming option again,,, so screenshots from a subbed BD would give the plausible deniability that ppl posting the photos also bought the BD ✌

(this tbh is rly more of a twitter issue bc the staff and actresses are literally on that platform so screaming piracy right in front of where theyre also looking is just a bad idea all around)

up at 4am, reading some stuff and painting. i had a caramel macchiato at like 11-12 T_T

at this time it feels like im the only one left in the world, no breath but mine, no warmth just a cold abyss i am but in a small section of. its nostalgic of my adolescence. not being able to sleep in middle school so id stay up all night drawing, playing my 3ds, looking at vines. lots of music, lots of thinking over my life constantly.

i hate the constant loneliness that follows me like a ghost who can't move on. its crippling, no matter where i go it clings to me, whispering in my ear no one cares and there is no one whos there for you but you. you, me, the person i like to be with the least.

at these times i want to love myself but i feel hollow, like usual. myself is so far away most days, im not truly sure who i am or what im doing. if im able to accomplish things. i need to believe and trust myself that i can do it, i cant give in to the same intrusive thoughts that bombard me day in and day out. i will believe, but my motivation is unstable like me.

i hope so badly i can become someone and not disappoint the people i love and not myself. i want to do this for myself. even though my family encourages me i know deep down theres a part of them who thinks i could be incapable of escaping turbulent living situations, my mind, basic struggles of life as an adult. i feel this often too, part of my problem right? im aware of everything thats wrong with me. i take measures to fix it, last a few days maybe before the routine is broken and im neglecting myself again. this person is ever changing, in a way i find it hard to relate to.

theres things about me i love and i know deep down that is truly me. but its only those interests and attachments. if i look into the mirror i see a million different people that i am and am not at the same time. i want to be whatever makes people happy, i want to make people laugh and feel good, sinking into myself so i can hopefully not mess up and avoid them hating me or finding me awkward and uncomfortable.

i will keep trying day by day to reach these goals. i hope i can continue to fight my mind even though its a bloody battle every single day, i cant stop trying. i think about how precious life can be and useless at the same time. it could be okay to let go someday, before nature takes its course. maybe someday there will be nothing to lose. i kind of dont want to outlive my parents though i know thats how theyd prefer it to be. everyone goes through this and im terrified of how itll affect me, how much more alone in the world i feel. people who know so much about me being unreachable. i want to be gone first but thats selfish of me to torture them with my passing.

so many selfish thoughts. i wish theyd all shutup.
