As the mods are busy with the Nighthood Zine and can't devote the time we'd normally be able to with this event, we thought we'd try something new for Jaydick Week 2024: a WIP Bash!

Do you have a bunch of WIPs lying around? Want an excuse to finish them up? Then we have the event for you! The JAYDICK WEEK WIP BASH is your space to share all those lovely tidbits you've left on the back-burner.

Rather than assigning three prompts for each day, the whole week is open for posting of all kind. Whether you choose to work on adding one chapter to your unfinished magnum opus, or whether you try to finish seven works, this week is intended to be a space for you to celebrate any amount of progress, no matter how small.

WIP BASH FAQ:

Your rules state that only new works are allowed. Is this still the case? Nope! For this event, you can choose to work on any WIP, no matter how old. Do the WIPs I work on have to be published somewhere? Nope! An idea you've had in your brain counts as a WIP too! Do your other RULES/FAQs still apply? Other than the exception mentioned above, these do still apply to this year's event. Do I need to work on seven WIPs? You can work on as many or as few as you'd like. This week is for YOU. What if I want to write something new? Did you come up with an idea? Congrats! It's now a WIP and counts for this event! What if I would like some prompts to help generate ideas? We have a list of our previously-submitted prompts here.

No Brakes This Time, I Slit the Line

Jason was surprised by how quickly they fell into a routine again once he moved back in, but he was more surprised by how quickly they fell into being a family. Him and Dick and Damian and Alfred, with Steph and Babs stopping by multiple times a week. But everyone's reactions to the news that Dick would be hanging up the cape and cowl couldn’t have been more varied. 

Alfred had simply nodded and told Dick he was glad he was embracing the identity he’d created for himself. Steph had a similar reaction, just with more yelling and hugs involved. Babs had argued at first, or so Dick had told him, Jason hadn’t actually been present for that conservation. But she’d eventually come around to seeing Dick’s viewpoint and admitted she knew how miserable they’d both been during the last few months. 

The main issue was Damian.

Damian who had been raised as heir to not only the Al Ghuls, but also as the heir to the Bat. Damian who had spent barely a month with his father before he was gone. Damian who viewed the cape and cowl as his birthright. 

Jason lightly rapped his knuckles on Damian’s door, pointedly ignoring Dick who was hovering anxiously in the doorway to their room. “Dami, can I come in?”

Jason made no move until he heard a muffled yes . The scent of upset pup raked against all his maternal instincts but he forced himself to approach slowly and not just scoop his pup up and thoroughly scent him until he didn’t smell like that anymore. Damian was curled up in the middle of his bed underneath a blanket he’d stolen from Jason’s nest at some point, so Jason gently sat down on the edge of the bed, not too close, but not too far either. 

“I do not understand.” Damian said, sounding small. 

“The bat, everything it stands for, especially for me and Dick, it’s complicated.” Jason started. “It’s the reason we created our own identities, so we could be our own people out of his shadow, even if mine started a little more violently than Dick’s. Nightwing, though, means as much to Dick as Robin does. It’s his way of staying connected to his parents and performing without the circus. Putting on the cowl means giving up everything he enjoys about what we do and becoming someone neither he nor I recognise.”

He must be in some kind of delirium if he’s imagining Golden Boy to come to his rescue. Deathstroke really has the good drugs, huh? What’s even more shocking is when Dick, in all his black and blue glory, gets on his knees and cups Jason’s face.

You mentioned you’re not a fan of JayDick, how do you feel about JayDickTim? And that with 54 and 62. (If the ship isn’t your cup of tea, just JayTim with those?)

I've written a JayDickTim fic, a couple of years ago. It was a gift for @iphoenixrising during a rough time to cheer her up. As with JayDick, JayDickTim is a ship I find easier to write when it's in an AU. They're all still three fascinating characters, each unique in their own way that brings a lot to the table. I've got such an AU in my WIP folder and take it out to poke at every now and again (JayDick are a mated mer pair who blood-bonded with a human Tim when they were young, all three swearing to always find each other and be together again).

So in terms of the ask, I can't write it as JayDickTim, but I can as JayTim. I do want to note this isn't a bash at Dick at all. I love Dick Grayson. He's the one who got me into this fandom in the first place.

For the ask! Secret relationship and Love confessor (Char A confessing their love for Char B to Char C).

Jason and Tim-- it hasn't been easy for them. They kinda went about the whole relationship ass-backwards, which really isn't a surprise to anyone who knows them once everything is out in the open. Neither of them exactly have the best role model in that department (looking at you, Bruce). But they have managed to at least stop picking fights in hopes of riling the other up enough for a quickie in that alley, or against the rooftop access door on a building.

They've even gone on dates.

Which... it's mindblowing. Tim still can't believe it. He's dating Jason Todd.

And Jason... He can't figure out what the hell he did to get to the point where Tim easily falls asleep against him, the tension bleeding out of him as he slumbers. In that moment, with She-Ra playing on the TV screen, Jason falls in love.

Damn.

Of course, this freaks him out. So after he puts Tim to bed and turns off the TV, he runs for it.

He's gone for weeks, leaving the country altogether to go under a deep cover to make some criminal organization regret ever being born.

But Gotham... it's his home. So he returns, not expecting warm welcome, not expecting to see Tim.

What he gets is a punch in the face by Dick.

"Give me one good reason not to shove you off this roof, Little Wing," Nightwing growls in his ear.

A pissed off Nightwing is a very dangerous Nightwing. Everyone with half a brain knows this.

Jason though... he's been through the wringer these last few months, having seen some of the worst that humanity has to offer. Those people won't be a problem anymore, but even as he went on his rampage there at the end, all he could think of was Tim.

"I love him," he chokes out.

Dick doesn't give way, the tip of his eskrima stick still pressed against Jason's larynx. "Then why did you leave?"

"Because I love him."

Dick heaves a massive sigh and releases Jason, who slumps to his knees on the rooftop. "The annoying thing is, that makes perfect sense." The older bird takes a seat beside him. "We're all fantastic at running from the best thing to ever happen to us." He nudges Jason's shoulder. "We really are his sons."

Jason sighs and stares up at the light-polluted night sky. "Is he mad?"

No need to clarify who he's asking about.

"If by mad, you mean working himself near to death and walking out of the room anytime your name is mentioned, then yes. I suppose you could say he's mad."

"How'd you find out?"

"I found him sleeping with one of the jackets you'd left behind."

Dick hauls himself to his feet and looks down at Jason. "I suppose I get to play mediator here."

"You're actually willing to?"

"Yeah. You two are idiots, but I also want you to be happy. Just remember, when the time comes, who helped fix all of this."

"The time comes for what?"

Dick laughs. "When it's time to pick a best man."
