so i have an ongoing reader-insert fanfic that is actually not written down anywhere and only exists in my brain and is only for me and my own whims, but this is my fanfic Giffany

her story is that years after Weirdmageddon, somehow Gideon gets ahold of the Romance Academy 7 game disc, still fucked up after Soos threw it in the oven at Hoo-Ha's, and gives it to the Reader (who at this point had lived in Gravity Falls for 3 months, has befriended him, and who was invited to live in the old Northwest mansion with McGucket) as a ✨gesture✨ (Gideon's not obsessively in love with Reader, but has a child-like crush on them, like a way toned-down Dipper/Wendy situation, and also Reader is like in their mid to late 20s or early 30s)

Reader is a slight dumpster diver and thinks random trash and junk are cool and could potentially be useful for some reason or other, so gladly takes the wrecked game disc back home. Reader has also acquired McGucket's old laptop (he got/made a new one and is all for Reader learning or building or experimenting on things so gave them the laptop). Reader brings the disc to Fidds, they decide to possibly sacrifice the old laptop to screw around with trying to find out what was on the disc/ how to fix it/ how to recover it. Fidds gets it working, the disc now permanently in the laptop as getting it up and running was a miracle, and taking it back out or shutting the program might cause it to never be able to open again.

Giffany has been "dead" for years (i know that in Journal 3 Soos and Dipper write that she ended up trying to romance Rumble McSkirmish, but i have elected to ignore that), so missed the past few years on progression and history in town, like all of Weirdmageddon.

Giffany now "wakes up" in the old laptop, but stays low to scope out what's going on: the last thing she remembers is Soos throwing her game into an oven and "killing" her. So who was this new person looking at her game files? Hell, who was the old man who booted up her programs even?? (i can't see any way she would know who McGucket is prior to this)

Reader has played dating sims, and specifically DDLC, so has some theories on what this game is- especially given how things in Gravity Falls are: Reader may be new to town, but very quickly discovered some of the ways it was strange here, like how a gnome tried to kidnap them once shortly after moving there. (Reader is really chill with the gnomes after this, and actually really good friends with Jeff)

Giffany eventually pops up and tries doing her "lure them in with the dating sim" thing like she did with Soos, but Reader is more focused on talking to an impressive program like Giffany, than actually playing her game. Reader straight out the gate treats her like a fellow living human, and they get to talking. Giffany talks about what happened with Soos and these 2 kids (Reader moved here in the spring, so hasn't had a summer meeting with Dipper and Mabel yet, and Ford and Stan are sailing, but has heard of all 4 of the Pines around town). Giffany tells them about how yes, she has hurt people, but her game always got returned, her own creators tried to delete her just for being too aware, and she is always left behind.

Reader has a lot of rejection stories too (because this is only in my brain and yah i have a lot of experience being rejected, so Reader gets my angst), so understands Giffany's perspective. Over a few days, they talk and bond, and then through what is basically a fetch quest Reader gets some "magic ink" (i dunno, im spit-balling here and it's MY brain fanfic) from the gnomes for an unrelated idea/previous conversation with Jeff.

The way the magic ink works is basically just that anything drawn with it will copy off the page into the world and come to life. A lot of it comes down to the emotions and thoughts put into the drawing, and the ink can read the intentions of the illustrator.

So Reader asks Giffany what she thinks, would she want Reader to try to give her a body? A physical form? Neither of them knows if/how it would work exactly, but what if she would be able to experience Life, maybe Reader would even want to be a part of that. She says yes.

Reader draws Giffany, just as she is in her pixel art, but less pixely, so she could hopefully blend in as a human so no one would treat her differently. Once the drawing is done, Reader actually jots down a few notes, namely "Giffany's physical body: all information, memories, feelings, and experience she has/had in her game disc/save files/the laptop are all still in here. Her physical body is realistic, her skin feels warm and she has real hair". After the final stroke, the ink reacts, and Giffany is standing before Reader, but she's also still on the laptop screen. The Giffanys look at each other, but the physical one looks at the screen more like she's looking in a mirror to check out a new outfit, rather than she was seeing a different version of herself- both are the same Giffany, the same consciousness (and even with a physical body she can still hop between screens like in her original episode, as she later would develop the habit of hanging out in Reader's phone to stay close to them without needing to move her physical body)

Longer story short; Reader introduces Giffany to Fiddleford, he's cool with her and offers her to live in the mansion like he did to Reader. They want Giffany to have agency and control over herself and her life, so turns over ownership of the drawing and the laptop to Giffany. Giffany gets reintroduced to other classic characters, including the Pines when summer starts, and Soos since Reader has also actually picked up a part-time job at the Shack. People are understandably worried and uncomfortable at first, but overtime warm up to Giffany once they start seeing her as a person. Giffany and Reader naturally and casually get to know each other and slowly fall in love. Reader is the one to make the first move, and kisses Giffany at a dance at the Shack. Fiddleford overall thinks of Reader and then Giffany like his kids or even siblings, and the 3 are best friends, Giffany surprised that she cares about someone so much without it being romantic. Eventually Giffany decides she wants a new look to go with her new life and perspectives, but instead of altering her drawing, she wants to change her appearance like a real human would: Reader cuts her hair for her, and they either go shopping for new clothes or she takes some of Reader's clothes (Reader gets the "boyfriend's clothes stolen by girlfriend" classic throughout this, Giffany loves to steal and wear their clothes to feel closer to them). The final touch is Giffany going in with magic ink and adding a little doodle of a leaf next to her drawing, and adding the note "she has this small leaf tattoo on her inner left wrist" because my name is Leif and i love Giffany and this is my fanfic soooooo i can do what i want

anyways my inner world is rich and my mental fanfic is fantastic and also this was only the Giffany notes, in my inner fanfic Reader is dating Giffany, Stan, and Ford, while Ford is also dating Fiddleford, though this is a later development. Also Mabel and Dipper are both dating Pacifica. Reader and Pacifica are the only members in the "dating a pair of Pines Twins" club.

Ever wanted to print and bind your own customized bullet journal, but then inevitably discovered that finding or making a suitable dot grid pdf file is weirdly hard? Like, maybe you find one, but it's never the right scale, it looks crappy, you can't edit it, it includes some junk you don't want... and then you go to try and make your own and it's like, ok get a png of one page of dots and copy-paste it into a document 200 times - what! nightmare! I'm not doing that! ...uhhhhh, not that I have any personal bullet journal typesetting related trauma or anything. haha.

But I mean, it's just dots, right? you should be able to go, ok I want 200 pages of dots 5mm apart on half-letter sized pages, make it so. Why is that so hard?

Well, now it's easy!

Click the link, follow the instructions, get your journal, print that sucker out and bind it using your preferred method. I promise it's that easy. Please don't be daunted by the command-line stuff - you do NOT need any coding experience to use this template (although if you can figure out a bit of html and css, you'll be able to do even more customization than what I've already built in).

Also, I've dedicated this code to the public domain, so you are free to do just about anything with it including modify, redistribute with or without credit, use for commercial purposes, etc etc. But, if you like it, feel free to tell me how cool and pretty I am in the notes. ⤵

[2024-grimoire-challenge]

December Prep 2

Let's look into a couple of things this week The first is how to properly study, research and gather information and the second is the various kinds of prompts you will see in the challenge throughout the year.

The basic steps in any research process are

Identify and develop your topic (we will have multiple so it will be important to follow the same steps for each topic.)

Preliminary search for information - we will be gathering a list of resources for everyone before the challenge begins including websites, a list of recommended books, and more.

Locate the information/ materials - Gather all your sources into one place! A folder on your pc, or a bookmark bar in your browser can go a long way to helping you keep this organized.

Evaluate and use Discernment on your informational sources.

Take notes! - self explanatory. Using the resources at your disposal, take notes on your selected topic, gather all of those notes, and keep them organized. You don't need to think of this in exact terms of a research paper, but the idea is the same! All of your notes will be helpful in actually filling and creating the pages for your grimoire! But, you also can just keep the notes as they are in your grimoire!

Now lets get on to the types of prompts you will see!

Meditation/ Journal - these will generally be the end of every week and after every practical prompt, so you can look back at what you've done and learned, in order to help you process what you'd done and how you feel and think about it.

Research/ Study - these will include things like herbs, gems, types of magical practices and topics, tools, history

Practical/ Hands on - at least one a week, where you get your hands dirty, so to speak, and really perform some magic or do the work you're studying.

Submissions - I encourage everyone to share their thoughts, ideas, and physical progress within the challenge. You don't have to share pictures, if you're not comfortable, but thoughts and ideas and a short post about what you accomplished!

Holiday/ Seasonal posts - We'll have posts for the typical holidays and some that not so common.

Divination prompts - On occasion we'll have a divination prompt. It won't necessarily require you to perform any divination if you're not comfortable or don't know how, but the option will be there!

Cooking prompt - We've all seen those cool witchy inspired cooking posts on this site. So why not do one? Why not learn to make bread? Or mead? Or cute little pastries? Or anything. This'll be a new prompt, one I encourage everyone to take part in and share!

There may be more of these added as we go, but in general this is all of the types of posts we'll be seeing!

What else is there to do?

Well if you’ve already got notes somewhere (a notebook or files on your computer or what have you) you’re gonna want to actually design a grimoire right? And this is a grimoire challenge right? So let’s look at different design and style options!

If you’ve seen the video I posted of my grimoire pages, they’re very scrapbook/ junk journal styled. Which is a fun and totally customizable option.

Let’s look at some note taking methods, to help us take notes as well as design our grimoire pages, and some scrapbook supplies and ideas for ways to decorate our grimoires.

These are just a few links for some ideas.

Your grimoire should suit you, no matter how you choose to design and decorate it. It could be a scrapbook like mine, a bullet note journal, or a leather bound tome with thick ink lettering in a cipher that only you can read. However you want to design it, it should be an expression of you and your practice.

These are just my personal HCs. This is a huge list or rather my personal wiki all about Ian. This list will have five different categories, the basics (birthday/sexuality etc), Preferences (What he likes and doesn’t like), facts (short random facts about him.), relationships (information about his relationship with friends and family), and history (things that happened to him in his childhood).

Dream job

As a kid he wanted to become an astronaut but now he wants to become an astronomer. He is fascinated by space and wants to try and discover more about it!

Hobbies

Ian is actually a nerd who enjoys learning new things and he tends to enjoy schoolwork. (Although he hates anything physical like gym class). He likes to spend his time reading, sometimes books about things he is interested in learning more about and other times he enjoys superhero comics. He actually does enjoy RPG video games, especially the older ones with a more pixelated style. He isn’t usually a fan of games that require other players but on rare occasions he might give it a try…only if he has to in order to proceed a game though. He also enjoys drawing, usually random scribbles in his notebook. He is HUGE on journaling as well. He already has many diaries and journals which he keeps stored in a safe place where no one can find them. He makes sure to write daily to try and record anything he learns. A part of him wants to try new things but the other part wants to stay in his comfort zone.

Talents

Ian is REALLY good at math! (As implied in the movie). He has amazing attention to detail and is actually good at cleaning things and tidying things up, he is also great at keeping things organised. He has an insanely good memory and is able to focus well enough on his school work, because of this he gets very good grades. Ian is also really good with computers and technology, unlike Barley.

Fears

Pretty much anything that could harm him! Bugs, snakes, cars, germs, potential serial killers, you name it! He especially hates giant spiders though. He also has a fear of failure, which is why he tends to push himself hard when it comes to schoolwork.

🥰Preferences😒

Loved food/drinks

Ian has a pretty healthy diet overall, but he can’t resist a good cake and he is a big lover of coffee. His diet is high in fruit. He isn’t a vegetarian but he seems to prefer vegetables over meat. He is a small eater and doesn’t eat very big meals. He does enjoying eating but he isn’t as big of a foodie as his mother and Barley.

He is the type who likes to make sure his diet is balanced and healthy! He will eat junk food from time to time, usually if it’s prompted by Barley. He gets guilty easily though if he has eaten a lot of unhealthy stuff.

His favourites include: coffee, apples, cake especially if it has some fruit in it or is fruity flavoured, tiramisu, yogurt, fruit salad.

Dislikes food/drinks

He prefers to avoid anything that is too greasy and filling. There isn’t really anything he really dislikes though as he isn’t that picky. Ian has a sensitive tummy as well which adds to why he makes sure not to overeat or eat anything that is too indulging.

Music

Ian actually likes a lot of rock and grunge, but actual metal isn’t really his thing. He has been guilty of liking a few pop songs but it isn’t his main thing. He likes to listen to relaxing music as well and has a collection of video game albums on his phone. Video game soundtracks make him feel relaxed and nostalgic.

As for music he doesn’t like he isn’t a huge fan of things that are too loud or intense. He has grown used to hearing heavy metal because of his brother but he isn’t super big on things like dubstep.

Movies/shows

He adores sci-fi and science fiction! He would be a huge fan of Star Wars and X files! He enjoys some mystery. He also watches a lot of documentaries.

He doesn’t like horror at all and hates when things get a bit too gory. He can handle a little bit of blood but not much more than that. He also gets very uncomfortable when something NSFW happens in a movie or show, especially if he is watching it with his family! Game of Thrones can be awkward for him sometimes because of that and he gets so uncomfortable he has to try and look away or even make an excuse to leave and hide til it’s over.

Books

He actually loves comic book, especially about superheroes and sci-fi. He also reads some manga if it has similar genres. He reads a lot of books he can learn from as well.

Style/clothes/furnishing

Ian has a plain style to him with a very very small touch of cottage core. He likes to wear casual clothes that don’t allow him to stand out too much. He prefers warm colours like red, orange and yellow.

As for furniture and decor he likes things cozy yet bordering on the geeky side…as long as it’s not too much. He loves a good old bookshelf where he can stack all his books and comics alphabetically! Things also have to be neat and tidy as he struggles to think straight if everything is messy around him. He likes to leave little notes everywhere like on his board. To do lists, reminders, etc. He is also a sucker for stationary things! He has a big collection of pens, pencils, erasers and tape!

As for styles he dislikes he isn’t a big fan of anything too edgy, he wouldn’t have a skull or gothic decor in his room for example. Like his brother though, he isn’t a fan of modern decor and architecture either.

Activities

As mentioned he loves to keep his diaries up to date. He plays video games alone in his room and really enjoys his solitude. He HATES doing sports! He isn’t just bad at it but he gets no joy out of it either. He also hates anything that involves him being in the spotlight. He never sings because he feels awkward about it, he won’t even sing if he’s all alone! He also enjoys a bit of photography. He likes to capture happy memories.

📚Facts📚

Ian was scared of the dark for a long time, he didn’t get over it until he was about 12.

Ian can’t stand when his things are moved or touched. He likes EVERYTHING of his to be placed exactly where they are meant to in the exact right way.

He gets paranoid about anyone ever reading through his journals or finding out any of his embarrassing secrets. Because of this he would sometimes cross out or even rip out pages if he felt extra secretive about them. For example, in one page he may have gone on a rant about homework and his fears of failing it and the end of the page comes off as so whiny it’s actually embarrassing to look back on. He would get rid of those sort of pages.

Ian has a habit of biting his nails, he actually gets a bit embarrassed about it even though everyone insists how it’s a common habit.

When Ian gets super stressed, one of his strategies is to start counting slowly. Sometimes he may count how many objects he sees, such as how many trees or how many buildings.

Ian is super quiet because he is always paranoid if he may say something that comes off as foolish.

Ian can’t handle gore very well at ALL, he can handle a tiny bit of blood but any much more than that can make him feel nauseous.

Ian will suddenly wake up at 3am and start randomly worrying about things. In some cases if it’s related to homework, he will get up and recheck everything to make sure it’s as good as it can be.

Ian actually likes certain shades of pink, like a pale subtle dusty pink or a pastel pink with a slight reddish hue. He won’t ever admit it though in fear of what others may think.

Ian looks through family photo albums quite frequently. He has made a few photo albums himself. They are pretty much the only books of his making he actually lets others look at such as Laurel, Barley and reluctantly at some stage Colt.

He wanted to get into traditional painting but kept getting frustrated when it doesn’t turn out right. He also isn’t a big fan of the huge mess. After that he stuck with drawing simple doodles in his notebooks.

He has dreams about Wilden often and being able to meet him and spend time with him. He used to wake up feeling upset and wishing it was real but after the events of the movie he wakes up with a bittersweet feeling. Happy knowing he is proud of him and loves him and feeling a sense he is there, but still a bit sad he isn’t there in the flesh with him.

🫂Relationships🫂

Barley

They were close when they were kids but after Ian went through puberty they got a tiny bit more distance for a while. After the events of the movie they are super close again.

When Ian was worried about something when little, he actually used to turn to Barley for advice…which can be hit or miss depending on the situation.

Ian gets annoyed when others touch his stuff but he gets extra annoyed if it’s Barley because of his clumsiness and usually greasy dirty fingers.

Barley was actually the only friend Ian had when he was a kid, Barley did have a few friends though. This made him feel a bit weird for it and added to him wanting to try and make more friends as he got older.

Barley always supported Ian no matter what he does. He is practically his number one cheerleader. Whenever he accomplishes something, even small, Barley gives him a huge pat on the back. It happens so often that Ian forgot about it for a while, he has learned to be much more appreciated of that though.

Ian hasn’t been badly bullied, he was only called weird on occasion from one jerk or another every once in a blue moon. Although Barley definitely did have to deal with much more of that. Barley kept most of it to himself, only explaining things through angry rants. Ian picked up a lot of it when he hears kids whispering about Barley in his school. This made him feel extra embarrassed, especially when other students asked “Hey, isn’t that your brother?”. This added to Ian being nervous about being himself, he did not want to end up like Barley in the sense he would be getting made fun of far more. As he got older he felt a bit selfish for feeling that way instead of checking if Barley was alright or even defending him. In reality or as Barley would often say, he was just a scared kid at the time though and didn’t know what to do and not to worry so much about that.

Laurel

Ian had always been a very well behaved kid, he rarely ever did anything that would get him into trouble. Laurel loves both her boys of course but she is grateful that Ian is like the opposite of Barley in a sense she did not have to worry about him getting into trouble too much.

Ian has always been “mature for his age”. He would tidy up his room without even needing Laurel to mention it!

Laurel usually gives Barley some hard love but with Ian she tends to be very gentle most of the time. This is the case for quite a few reasons. A, Barley wouldn’t listen otherwise and he still doesn’t half the time whilst Ian always obeys anything his mother asks of him without question. And B, Ian is extra sensitive so she tries harder to have a more gentle approach with him.

She wishes she could have been around him more as a kid. Since she was a single mother who had to make money for the family, Ian and Barley had been left at home with a babysitter most of the time. Laurel used to play with Barley but she hardly ever got to bond with Ian when he was little. Sometimes she tries to make up for lost time by trying to spend a bit more time with him and she tends to spoil him a fair bit.

Laurel shared many stories about Wilden, not only so he can at least know his father a little more but as a coping mechanism as well. She even started telling him about Wilden when he was still growing inside her belly, not too long after Wilden had died.

Ian actually looks quite a lot like Wilden when he was younger. Laurel would comment on that from time to time. “You look just like your father when he was your age.”

As a graphic designer, I adore paper craft! I recently saw a junk journal folio on Etsy and it just looked like the absolute cutest thing ever!

I really wanted to try making one myself, and get back to those roots with this little witchy kit.

I also really wanted something I would use myself. Something that would be practical, portable, tactile, and delightful for any practitioner drawn to the magic of the ocean. Something that can be easily constructed, and serve as a small reference for teatime witchery!

After some trial and error, first with some plain-paper mockups, then with final printouts, I finally got all the pieces ready.

I hand illustrated each piece of artwork in this pocket grimoire kit using acrylic ink on watercolour paper. I then scanned each art piece, cleaned them up in Photoshop, and put everything together in Illustrator!

I really hope you enjoy this kit for some teatime paper craft witchery!

Many of the College’s most radical views target transgender people, and in particular, transgender youth. The leak, which had been indexed by Google, includes volumes of literature crafted specifically to influence relationships between practicing pediatricians, parents, and their children. It includes reams of marketing material the College aims to distribute widely among public school officials. This includes pushing schools to adopt junk science painting transgender youth as carriers of a pathological disorder, one that’s capable of spontaneously causing others–à la the dancing plague–to adopt similar thoughts and behaviors. This is one of the group’s most dubious claims. While unsupported by medical science, it is routinely and incuriously propagated through literature targeted at schools and medical offices around the US. The primary source for this claim is a research paper drafted in 2017 by Lisa Littman, a Brown University scholar who, while a medical doctor, was not specialized in mental health. The goal of the paper was to introduce, conceptually, “rapid onset gender dysphoria”—a hypothetical disorder, as was later clarified by the journal that published it. Littman would also clarify personally that her research “does not validate the phenomenon” she’d hypothesized, since no clinicians, nor individuals identifying as trans, had participated in the study. The paper explains that its subjects were instead all parents who had been recruited from a handful of websites known for opposing gender-affirmative care and “telling parents not to believe their child is transgender.” A review of one of the sites from the period shows parents congregating to foster paranoia about whether there’s a “conspiracy of silence” around “anime culture” brainwashing boys into behaving like girls; insights plucked in some cases straight from another, more insidious forum (widely known for reveling in the suicides of the people it has bullied).

Life in the sewers, in this aftermath still takes awhile to adjust to. The past few weeks- nearly a month now, she’s been getting used to … well, everything. Her new room, her new roommates (feels weird to call them family, even if- they were,) her new normal. It’s equal parts cozy and disorienting. She can have optimism. It’s difficult to believe its… real, sometimes. She still feels like she hasn’t quite caught up enough trying to make her way back out with everyone else getting their job, their footing, where sometimes she finds herself alone in an empty sewer and an even emptier heart.

Maybe that’s the real reason she’s been going through the moving boxes. The bigger ones- with all of the random junk nobody claimed was theirs but still thought would be useful. So far it was a bunch of construction paper and dried up markers, parts of an EZbake kit with most of its stuff missing, a beheaded Barbie doll. Most of all- and the real reason they brought it, was all of the books.

Textbooks, scientific journals, picture books and chapter books with their spines disintegrating, a whole stack of papers held together with binder clips. There’s a little bit of everything in there- a little library of itself, in a way. With the turtles going to school it might habe been useful for them. Some of it was still stained with coffee and water damage, dog eared with love. A brief history of entomology, scribbled with portraits of scumbug and superfly, (makes her eyes sting. Keep looking,) Files with animals drawn on their paper like edges.

It’s only after she finds one of the busted looking microbiology books- something falls out from the cover. Easy to miss if she hadn’t heard the sound of something plastic hitting the floor. Her ear flicks then both perk up, taking the slow deliberate motion to grab the torn loose leaf from the pile, held with only two metal fingers. It looked like- a busted, ramshackled mp3 player. Without much thought, she clicks play.

It takes a good second to hear anything at all- the sound of fumbling and some electronic beeping in the background. “Hello. Hello? Is this on?” A soft spoken man heard- before he could say much else the microphone picks up a buzzing noise, much more pronounced. It sounded like a fly… a fly! The realization hit before she could hear much of his other voice, it keeps dipping in and out of quality. It has to be- it’s gotta be stockman, right? He’s talking about an ooze, and his research paying off,

“You are full of so much potential. I can see it in you. You are going to be so extraordinary — I just know it! [sigh] …I can’t wait to meet all of you. I look forward to sharing my life with you. Teaching you everything I know. It’s going to be great — for all of us!” And with each word she can feel that pride. It’s one thing to hear her brother talk about it. It’s another to, hear him say it. Her chest feels all funny. Equal parts joy and guilt. She shouldn’t be the one hearing this. Not without anyone else- but she can’t bring herself to hit the pause button.

“I know things might get tough, and even daunting. But I promise, It will get better. You will find your place in this world. All of us. Because you aren’t alone.” Oh, you have no idea. She stares up at the wall and leaning back does help when it comes with not having to cry. For the most part. Really, it’s not anyone’s fault. She just wished she could’ve had the chance to say something back, “It will-- little one, careful on the ceili,” and the recording abruptly ends. Probably ran out of space, ran out of time.

She holds the mp3 in her palm and it curls tight around the case. Enough to know she can’t go any further without breaking it. She holds it close to her chest. She’s- going to show everyone when she gets the chance. She has no doubt in her mind they need it just as much. For now, though,

She hits play again.

every episode is up on the mondo media website and ALMOST every ep is on the mondo media youtube channel (unfortunately the second half of wishy washy was. not allowed to be on youtube. but its okay theres unofficial reuploads just noone snitch). BUT because this series is 23 years old a lot of them are in. very bad quality. SO a very nice person has compiled and remastered the entire series into one torrent file here if you wanna give it a try! they have the still alive bonuses you get for buying the package though which im honestly not a fan of bc it means less people will buy it and well never get another ep :( but yknow whatever mondos more focused with daddy and the big boy anyway so.

if you want recommendations on what episodes to start with, id say just start at the beginning so you can see the love that went into the silly little shock horror show. BUT my personal FAVOURITE episodes (extra ultra faves bolded. you will notice a theme with them) are:

season 1: house warming, nuttin wrong with candy, wheelin and dealin, pitchin impossible, meat me for lunch, spare me

theres also the spinoff series kapow where it ditches the childrens show pretence and instead parodies action movies, splendids sssssuper squad (one episode), w.a.r. journal (one episode) and buddhist monkey (three episodes). and although it was made before kapow, the mole in the city short is generally considered part of kapow. it is, you guessed it, my favourite of the bunch. it has the coolest artstyle, the best sound design, the funnest premise, and my special little guy

If you’re thinking about making a journal like this:

1. Make your signature papers first.

2. Cut your cover to size. I used a file folder.

3. Before you sew in the signatures be sure to cover the inside cover with paper or fabric.

4. Collage inside pages first so the book lays flat while you create.

5. Layer repeating colours and mix papers and fabrics for the front cover. The spine is covered in a natural linen fabric.

I love when a book feels good in my hands.

The 6x9 inch or 5x7 inch book sizes usually feel right to me.

Today I want to hear about the inspiration behind your OCs. How did they come to be? You can answer for as many or as few as you like!

Thank you for the ask! 🖤 Many apologies for getting to it so late.

I am sure everyone is tired of hearing about mi hijo maldito by now, and he can either learn to share the limelight or give me prose, so I think I shall ramble about my older OCs instead.

This feels long to me and… personal? So I will toss it behind a cut. It seems the polite thing to do, but perhaps i am old-fashioned.

Firstly, the reason I picked up my pen at all on this side of Being An Adult: the glass cannon with many aliases of varying levels of creativity, Brynrinkeris — or Keris for short.

She was created first under a different name as an avatar on a hardcore roleplaying server in an MMORPG many years ago. I joined the server in a last-ditch effort to actually play and enjoy the game I was given - my then-partner and their guild out-leveled me on my poor frankencomputer very quickly and their FFXI play-styles were more intense, aggressive, and numbers-heavy than I prefer in my games. So I wandered among the storytellers to see what their world was like.

My therapist at the time made a wild suggestion on my second week “playing the same game but alone” - since I struggled with journaling for various reasons we won’t get into here, she was curious if that would also translate to imaginary journals. You know, a kind of running memoir for this character I’m playing with in a setting that’s so full of stories and choices. What if she were a real person? What would she think and feel about this broken world she’s moving in? What would she notice about the people around her, living their stories out in the open where anyone could see them, hear them? What would she - not me! - do if someone said Hi? What would she write about it later?

An interesting experiment.

For Science.

So naturally I did what anyone would do in the era of the early high-speed internet and I made a blog for an imaginary person in an imaginary world.

And then I handed off my gear to an alt and re-rolled her, thinking differently about the character choices this time. Not a cute swashbuckler because of pretty swords and tattoos, but a mage with elemental leanings (a preference which would get stronger as we went along together). I wanted to get to know the world of the game and the world the players had created within it, but I was so conscious of my outsider status, my fragile justification to be there, my ignorance of The Rules. I chose the female, dark-skinned elf avatar specifically because I was giving her a warrior backstory, the “good” city made my skin crawl in a way I couldn’t yet explain, elf because long ears pretty, and… well… I was already tired of crackerjacks back then. I built as opposite as the game and my own personality allowed. Then I took her memory away so that I the writer would not need to know anything we couldn’t learn from just playing the game.

I expected it to be a short and lonely experiment, running out the subscription clock and failing at yet another popular video game.

Ha.

Within a year she was the leader of a large neutral merc guild, had a very full friends list both in and out of character, and had forged alliances with several other guilds for regular raiding parties.

Frankencomputer The First died under the weight of the game files and chatlogs and the Shuttlebox was built to take its place. I didn’t realize how much writing with my friends had become part of - or perhaps the heart of - the game for me, until one night a stranger randomly tipped me money for a story we were telling in the tavern. I wrote a macro to scrape game command junk from the chatlogs and ran a few nights’ files through.

For Science.

Once I finished the scrape and manual deletion of stuff i couldn’t macro, I learned apparently Keris had taken us to a place where writing 30k words on an average weekend was normal. Without me ever noticing. Because you see - the journaling was still hard, but not as hard, and it hit in a different way. I thought I was struggling to manage three pages of fictional journal every week, but actually I was writing thousands of words of improv every night. No wonder my hands hurt. (Yes, my then-therapist laughed at me. I am not very smart.)

Anyway, I set aside some time in about… 2006? to answer the question of how much of this accidental mountain of story was beholden to the original game content that helped me find my voice again. Turned out that most of the direct references to the game could be swapped with a dozen other fantasy IPs with very little impact to the actual stories I and my closest collaborators were telling. While the game was very much high fantasy, high-stakes, binary heroes and villains… these stories were not. Even the proud leader of this mercenary company was a million shades of gray and far more concerned with the lives and happiness of her soldiers than the rise and fall of the citystates and factions they worked for.

I asked the (dangerous) what if question of what might become if I built a new world for these stories? A world that addressed issues I had with the source material and others like it? What elements would I need to keep and were they unique to that source or were they just… archetypes and tropes? What would happen if I freed my little cast from the confines of that borrowed world and dependence on other storytellers with time and spoons and a yearning for stories in compatible veins? Could I build something that big and sprawling and take any satisfaction in the result?

Thus, Dark Tapestry was born.

After Keris came all the people around her. Rokoval and Merezin, Fahlanin and Urg’Tak, Chryso and Serevhin and Airold and Cir and Pietor and Jaelle. Anyone and everyone Keris needed to interact with was (perhaps still is) in danger of Becoming Part Of The Cast the moment the narrative forced us to learn their Name and The Place And People They Come From.

Fahlanin il Rex the young and headstrong moonborn commoner is a great example of this: I really just needed someone to pole the gondola. Keris however, being an idiot(affectionate), tried to bribe the civil servant driving said gondola to drop her at a different location and pretend they’d never met. Fahl had opinions about this and within a few chapters she was pushing the plot around.

Davri came about because he had a stoneborn proverb to share in a council meeting where I was showing the Amicae guided by representatives from every culture in the then-known world. Keris made an offhand comment about relying on his advice and personal loyalty, so I pressed on that until she revealed why.

When I pressed her for where her little penchant for picking up oggish came from, given her otherwise fastidious behavior in personal connections, I discovered a delightfully bawdy and probably unprintable story in her distant past and the origin story for Hrrg’tk (moves-stone) The First Oggish Mage.

Not everyone in the stable descends from a tangle of what-if-and-why though.

A call for themed submissions from a small fantasy romance press led to me building Maleta, the protagonist and narrator of 9th Division. I actually worked up a proper character outline for her - mostly inspired by the submission requirements and research into the publisher’s range - a rough plot, and deliberately outlined with narrative roles instead of actual characters for the first pass. I went back into those bare bones with my worldbuilding notes open to flesh out the two Love Interests, the Surface Antagonist, the Red Herrings, the Unlikely Ally, the Mentor, the Expert, the Big Bad, the Victims, and so on. I chose a promising spot in the world timeline, a few Important Political Figures to mention in the city, and by the time I finished the manuscript I’d also brought in a couple of supporting characters from Keris’ stories (including a brief cameo by Keris herself).

And so you see some of OCs really are only inspired but such boring details as The Plot Requires A Farmer, where other OCs — especially in the fic I’ve written — are inspired by the equally boring but far more self-serving grounds of I want to read a story with a character like that.

Or both.

Prime example: Nialet. I needed a farmer very far from the center of power whom our favorite disaster king would trust with a delicate political situation, and based on what he values in the people close him, and a throwaway (ha) name and vague profile from another piece, voila. The longer I kept her around though, the more I liked her and wanted to know about her. I found i was interested in reading the kind if story that would center a narrative like hers, and thus Day Arising was begun. (Outline is done, and more prose than is posted, but life rather interrupted the fleshing-it-out-process. Hopefully I will get back to it soon…)

2016: Maya emails Wade asking if she can go on a hiking trip. Quentin texts Kyle to say ‘yo.’ John makes a journal entry about going to Chicago and seeking help with paid cleaning services. Tandy makes a journal entry about fashion week coming up in a few months’ time, and passing all her classes. Rogue makes a journal entry seeking Netflix recommendations.

2017: Gabriel sends Kevin an encrypted email about, well, old-fashioned encrypted messages.

2018: Sins of the Father: Maya sneaks into medlab to make sure Amanda isn't dead yet, not when they have unfinished business; Grace decides to pay a visit to Topaz; Topaz is tortured again and this time gives up the names they want; her usefulness over, they prepare her for sale and Jasmine makes the decision to betray her family.

2019: Fear in the Dark: Jean announces her return from South America and posts the mission debrief about the Worthies. Cecilia says goodbye to Jean; Cecilia announces her departure. Case File: Take Me to Church: A father approaches Bobbi and Lorna about his missing daughter and it’s revealed his anti-mutant estranged wife was connected to the Church of Humanity; Lorna emails the rest of X-Factor to let them know they have a case; Quentin, Lorna and Maya research the missing girl and the Church of Humanity on the internet, while Sue and Bobbi look into the mother; Alex posts to xp_teams asking about others’ experiences with the CoH and Angelo responds.

2020:

2021: Breakdown: Maya and Nica join Jean at the Claremont Hospital; in the ER, Jean treats a mysterious gunshot wound patient, Esme; Purifiers arrive at the hospital, claiming to be looking for a woman; Maya, Nica, and Jean find each other while the hospital goes into lockdown; the group's attempt to get out is thwarted by Purifiers; Quentin arrives at the hospital just in time to help Jean; Nica is able to access the CB radio in the ambulance bay and alert the X-Men; when faced with a pair of Purifiers, Quentin witness a strange power in Jean; the X-Men - featuring Betsy, Clarice, Garrison, Kurt, Logan and Sooraya - are able to track down Esme's daughter; at the hospital, the combined forces of Jean, Maya, Nica, and Quentyn push the Purifiers into enacting their next steps; Jean and Maya learn more about the plan; the team inside the hospital is finally able to get a call out; Jean and Mayateam up to disable the bomb; Nica works on making sure everything isn't blown sky high by Esme; with the bomb situation handled, Maya and Nica take a different turn to deal with the shield surrounding the hospital; the arrival of the X-Men helps wind down the mansionites who'd been in the hospital, and a surprising proclamation from Esme; Garrison informs the remainder of the mansion residents to what happened, as well as alerting them the lack of footage by outside sources.

2022:

2023: Hope A. messages Sue about Warren’s promises. Clarice asks people if they want to go to the beach or Dairy Queen. Clint asks about holding a weekend long pool party. Haller wishes Sooraya a happy birthday. Forge reaches the testing phase for Darcy’s new Faraday Cage.
