Everything has been fucked lately. Your job sucks, school isn't going great, your social life is almost nonexistent, your family is a mess and you just want some peace and calm. "Yuji, what are you doing here?"

"Well, you weren't picking up my calls and I got worried." When you didn't give him an answer, he continued, "Are you alright? Whoa you're soaked and my god you're ice cold c'mon let's get you home. Personally Steph had been hoping to suggest going to a theme park, mostly because she suspected Dick was a bit of an adrenaline junkie and she and Cass could use another roller coaster buddy since Jason didn’t like being strapped into the ride and Tim had been spoiled by his stupid super-BFF as far as extreme sports went. She would have to pitch it another time, though, because when Tim’s recitation of the Alfred Approved List of Sibling Activities (which Steph had helpfully labeled, earning herself a truly impressive sigh from Tim when he opened the document) got to “zoo” Dick immediately lit up.

“There’s a zoo?” he asked, leaning precariously out of his chair and across the table. “What animals do they have?”

Tim obediently turned the tablet so Dick could see, too, and started listing them off. Steph tipped her chair back onto two legs and twisted her head towards the hallway.

“Damian!” she shouted. She couldn’t actually hear his annoyed huff but she could imagine it plenty well from experience. “You’re taking us to the zoo!” she informed him. There was a brief pause before he appeared in the doorway, face set in a standard Bat Scowl.

“I’m what,” he said.

Steph is a Terror no matter what AU elements you introduce, I stand by this. (I'm also enjoying Reluctant Eldest Sibling Damian a lot, he didn't get kids when he was one and it's not gotten a lot better but he's trying. Kind of.)

May! Officially springtime, I wanted my May playlist to key off of 'Les Fleurs' by Minnie Riperton, a song my bff shared in our family discord and has haunted me since (positive).

This playlist put itself together pretty quickly, and basically was in its final form by mid-month. And, since part of the whole point of me even starting doing monthly playlists was because I am prone listening to the same playlists over and over (and over), I had no problem spending two weeks of workdays listening to the same series of songs. It's comforting! My comfort playlist is six songs long and I used to play it on a loop through most of a workday at a Bad Place I Worked. Three hours of syrupy spring joy every day was a delight.

The vibe for May was, if I may quote what I sent my bestie in describing it: "Flowers and joy sweetness and fierceness is the vibes, Middle finger in a lace glove." I mean, I think I achieved that, anyway.

Several covers on this one, like the Cowboy Junkies covering Vic Chesnutt 'Flirted With You All My Life,' which is a hard one to cover for a lot of reasons but this is (to me) a successful attempt. The 'Goodbye Horses' cover by Dead On A Sunday is also a new favourite, it doesn't really change much about it, but it's just a good damn song. The Cardigans singing 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' hit me so unexpectedly, I was delighted.

Adol Christin (Ys series): Adol is a guy obsessed with adventure and an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the wrong time. The Ys series follows his chronicles throughout the various lands of Fantasy Europe, as Adol fights gods, makes friends, and attempts to satisfy his endless wanderlust.

Why I like this dude: Insane little bumper car of a man. Don't let his silent protagonist tendencies fool you; this man is insane. Just a pure adrenaline junkie. Also vehemently aro. To me. He could never get a girlfriend (or a boyfriend, if Ys9 is anything to go by), because Adventure Comes First. His bff dogi has just learned to accept this. The way he just Lights Up at any hint of excitement in Ys9 is just adorable, man. Ignore how often I've reblogged art of him in a maid outfit.

Kanata Kanbara (Disciple of the Lich: Or How I Was Cursed by the Gods and Dropped Into the Abyss): Kanata has been chosen by the gods to be isekai'd. When he implies he'd rather continue on Earth with his cat, though, the gods retaliate by dropping him into Cocytus, the deepest and most dangerous dungeon of all, in order to turn his demise into a quick horror flick. He survives only through the help of the Lich Lunaere, who has no ulterior motives in training him beyond belief and just wants him to be prepared for how much more dangerous the outside world is than the abyss. yeah.

Why I like this dude: LNs can have a problem where they "run out of premise." When Kanata escapes the abyss halfway through volume 1, i was afraid. i was then incredibly delighted when it turns out Lunaere's training broke his damn brain. He's constantly afraid of something dangerous popping up because Lunaere trained him in the Demon Hell Dimension, and through sheer happenstance (i.e: the gods trying to kill him for his impudence), his fear keeps getting validated. He aquires both a student who he immediatly inflicts his new Lunaere-isms on (she is a normal person and terrified to leave), as well as a god-like homonculus daughter he has to be responsible for. It's fucking great. A polite young man who has undoubtedly broken under his circumstances but soldiers on anyway.

Prologue (Maybe) <Chapter one>

Theodore was now fourteen, his dad bought him a phone, not knowing he already has one. Theodore decided that the upgrade was needed and wrapped the phone he was borrowing from his friend Andy in bubble wrap. He took a sticky note and wrote: ‘This is my new number: ***-***-****’ and put it on the bubble wrap, soon putting it into a box, writing Andy’s address and putting it next to the mailbox, hoping that Andy would actually open it. It’s been about a month and he now gets a text that reads, ‘Hey Theo! It’s Andy, your BFF, hopefully still ur BFF.’ Theodore smiles when he reads it. ‘Yes ur still 1 of my BFFs Andy.’ He texts back, getting a smile emoji as a reply. He soon gets a text that reads, 'Hey, Theo, haven’t talked to you in a while.’ Theodore clicks on the number, not recognizing it. He texts, ‘Who is this, i if this is u Boris, then how the fuck did u get my number u piece of shit?’ The anonymous messenger texted, ‘Who the fuck is Boris? I’m not telling you who I am just yet.’ Theodore rolled his eyes, assuming it was Boris being an asshole and shut his phone off, laying down on his bed and yawning.

~Small time skip~

It was about one in the morning, Theodore was still awake. There was a pebble thrown at his window, he got up and looked out the window to see his junkie friend, Boris Pavlikovsky. He opened the window and put his hand out for Boris, almost as if it were routine. Boris grabbed his hand. Theodore lifted him into his room and sat back down onto his bed. “Hey.” Theodore said. Boris sat next to him and pulled a joint out of his pocket. “Wassup, Potter?” Boris’ accent was very strong, Boris lit the joint and took a puff. “How were you texting me earlier? I haven't given you my new number yet.” Theodore asked, taking his own puff of the joint. Boris looked at him, looking high, but confused. “O czym ty kurwa mówisz?” Boris asked, he taught Theodore some polish,so he was able to translate it. “You weren’t texting me?” He asked, taking a longer puff of the joint. Boris shook his head before kissing Theodore, his hand on the other’s waist. Theodore hummed when Boris mumbled, “Jesteś taki gorący..” He soon broke the kiss, now looking at the brunette in the eyes. “May I have your number, Potter?” He asked, Theodore was soon to comply, grabbing a sticky note and writing his number. Boris smiled, putting the sticky note on the side table and starting to cuddle Theodore. Theodore cuddled back happily. “How’s Kotku?” He asked, Boris shrugged, “I dunno… I broke up with the slut days ago.” Theodore sighed and rested his back gently.

~The next morning~

Theodore woke up to see Boris’ hand on his waist. He felt Boris’ breath on the back of his neck, he also smelt it, and it smells horrible. Theodore hums and tries to push Boris’ hand off of his waist, only to be pulled closer. “ Boris..” Theodore mumbled, his hand on Boris’. Boris just grumbled nonsense and kissed his neck gently. “Go.. sleep..” he mumbled, continuing to suck on his friend's neck. Theodore just hummed, gripping his hand tighter. Boris started nibbling on his neck, making Theodore moan softly. “B… Boris, we gotta get ready for school..” He said softly. Boris grumbled and let go of Theodore, sitting up and stretching. Theodore checked his phone and saw a text from three hours ago saying, ‘Good morning, you should still be asleep, but just wanted to say good morning’ Theodore smiled a bit and walked over to his closet, starting to get dressed. Boris watched him get dressed, knowing that they’ve fucked before and that he doesn’t mind. “I’m so tired, oh my god..” Theodore whined as he pulled his shirt over his head. “Тобі треба було залишитися роздягненою..” Boris said as he hugged Theodore’s waist from behind. He didn’t understand what the other said. Theodore hummed, “Hm?” Boris just did his casual, loud, “Hah!” with a smile. Theodore put his phone in his pocket and put his round glasses on. “Поттере, ми маємо ходити до школи? Я не хочу... Це так нудно..” Boris whines, but Theodore just sighs. “We have to go to school, I don’t care if it’s boring for you, we skipped too many times.” He said, almost rolling his eyes. Boris grumbles and opens the door for Theodore. Theodore says a quick thanks and walks down to the living room. His father was asleep with a bottle of beer in his hand while his dad’s girlfriend was in the kitchen smoking. Her name was Xandra, she was alright. “Hey kiddo’s. Breakfast is on the table,” she says, her blonde hair in a high ponytail. Theodore nods and sits on one of the chairs, starting to eat his eggs and bacon, Boris does the same.

~Time skip~

They were now at school, Theodore was sitting in his usual seat. Boris wanted to sit next to Theodore, so he bribed someone so he could sit next to him. The teacher was doing the lesson, not caring about the switched seats. Theodore got a text, his notifications were on silent so nobody heard it, but he felt it. He sneakily checked it, it was from Andy, ‘Hey, you are probably in school, but it’s lunch for me, just wanted to say hi, the Barbour’s miss you, man.’ Theodore almost smiled, but he put his phone away.

~Time skip~

The two were now at Theodore’s house. “Dad, we should go on a vacation to New York, I haven’t been there in a year, I sort of miss it,” he says. His dad sighs, “Theo, kid, you know how I feel about that place.” Theodore looks upset, “Please, just for three days,” he begs, using puppy dog eyes to get his way. His dad sighs again. “Only if Boris comes with, I want you to have a friend that’s not only that weird Andy kid,” he says, looking at Boris. Boris nods, “I’ll come with.” Boris smiles, Theodre’s dad smiling back at him. “I’ll book a flight for tomorrow then, start packin’ your bags, kids.” Theodore’s dad soon says, now going onto his phone and looking for flight. The two go up to Theodore’s room, soon starting to pack. Well, they usually share clothes, so Theodore was doing the packing. Theodore took the chance to text Andy, ‘Guess what’ Andy soon replied with a, ‘What?’ he texted, ‘I’M COMIN TO NEW YORK!!!!!!!!’ Andy took a bit to reply, ‘WOOOOOOOOOOO!’ Theodore smiled and put his phone on the charger, moving the suitcase to the side of the room and hopping on his bed. Boris took the chance to launch himself onto the bed and pull Theodore down with him. “Let us cuddle,” he said, soon getting a nod from the other boy, letting him cuddle. “We’ve got a big day tomorrow.” Theodore said, taking his glasses off and putting them on the nightstand. Boris nodded and kissed Theodore’s neck gently. They both soon fall asleep.

iHeartPodcast Award Nominees Announced: Indie Podcasts Mostly Ignored

iHeartMedia has announced the nominees for the 2024 iHeartPodcast Awards presented by The Hartford live at SXSW. The awards, which claim to honor the very best in podcasting from 2023 and celebrate the most innovative talent and content creators in the industry, will feature 29 categories spanning podcast genres.

Independent podcasters -- the backbone of podcasting -- are again underrepresented in the award process. Most of the nominees are TV personalities.

In the United Kingdom on October 31, 2023, the first-ever Independent Podcast Award ceremony was held in London.

The Independent Podcast Awards were set up by whynow Media and the Verbal Diorama podcast team to help uncover the talent that they have in the UK, but that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

The awards, which were also sponsored by companies including Captivate, Adelicious and Pirate, were launched last year to celebrate the independent podcasting sector.

Perhaps, a similar event will take shape in the U.S.

This year, iHeartMedia teamed up with South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals to host the live and in-person ceremony in Austin, Texas at the Fairmont Hotel on Monday, March 11 at 8 p.m. CT.

“As the podcast industry continues to rapidly grow, this past year has clearly proven that podcasters are always innovating in the audio space and finding new ways to reach and engage new audiences,” said Conal Byrne, CEO of iHeartMedia’s Digital Audio Group. “The nominees for the 2024 iHeartPodcast Awards reflect the results of honing that creativity, and we’re thrilled to celebrate and once again empower these creators and elevate the podcast industry together live in person at SXSW.”

No word from Mr. Byrne about independent podcasters.

Each year, podcast fans help decide the winner of the Podcast of the Year by voting online at iHeartPodcastAwards.com from February 5 through February 18.

Last year, the virtual 2023 iHeartPodcast Awards were hosted by actor and comedian Brian Baumgartner, and featured a variety of appearances by celebrities who mostly found fame and success on TV.

Maybe this year, the award ceremony will include people who are born and bred in podcasting.

I think it's sad that iHeart has not carved out award categories for independent podcasters like The Life Shift, Multispective, The Nightingale Of Iran, Murder Sheet, Double Take, Infernal Communication, EarBuds Podcast Collective, and many other deserving indie podcasts and podcasters.

After all, iHeart didn't invent podcasting or participate in its growth in the early, formative years. Independent podcasters did that.

ROTTMNT Appreciation Post #5: April O'Neil

What's a turtle appreciation series without April? Rise April is a turtle in all but species, a sister-in-arms to the rest of the crew. She definitely deserves that honor, for multiple reasons.

April may be the straight man of the group most of the time, but she isn't boring in any sense of the word. She's a hardcore adrenaline junkie who isn't afraid to jump into danger if her family needs help. Heck, she'll jump into danger just for fun. She isn't stupid, though. She often serves as a voice of reason, even for our resident smart guy, Donnie. Speaking of him, April's relationship with him this time around is pure wholesomeness. They have peak bff-bordering-on-sibling energy. It's awesome.

She's also hilarious. She has some witty, sassy dialogue on par with Leo and Donnie, but she also has a dorky flair to her behavior.

Despite her high energy, though, April has a softer side. If she notices that Splinter or one of the turtles is feeling down, she won't hesitate to ask what's wrong and do her best to comfort them. In turn, they're always willing to help her when she's distressed or going through a funk. Her protectiveness of Mayhem shows that she truly loves animals, and her interactions with Baron Draxum prove that her empathy is not limited to her closest friends.

In the end, April is an amazing, entertaining character who has more than earned her spot as an honorary Hamato Clan member. The Mad Dogs wouldn't be quite the same without her.

This is the last appreciation post for now because I'm TERRIBLE at drawing everyone else, but I'll pick them up again eventually.
