I genuinely think that any change in behavior starts w telling yourself that your worst days, worst performances, just worst moments in general aren’t who you “truly are.” It’s all about unlearning any thought process that essentially chalks up traits you aren’t proud of to “this is who I really am” “in reality I’m lazy” “in reality I’m just a bad person” bc not only is that never true, but it impedes your efforts to try to do better as well. Anything we struggle with has roots in things like childhood trauma, thoughts you’ve been fed before, your upbringing…. but never that you’re inherently a bad person. What I’m learning this year is that a lot of us doing better & being better & improving really comes down to self-talk—to disavowing the very notion that deep down we’re simply bad.

I am a nice person, but I'm also kind of an asshole. I'm never trying to be mean. I used to be very blunt with the way I speak. I'm more reserved now, but I still "think" bluntly. I think it's most noticeable to me when I look at other people's art. If I see art that I don't like, or art from a newer artist/artist that's not at a specific "skill level", my brain tells me it's bad. Whether or not this statement is true doesn't matter. My initial thought is that it's bad. Ugly. And this initial thought rarely changes if I keep looking at the piece. With this, I find it hard to give feedback to newer artists. My go to has always been "keep going." That's as positive as I can bring myself to be. (This happens with a lot more than just art, but it's the most notable) I never want to discourage anyone from drawing, but I actively want to talk to other artists since I don't have any artistic friends. (I also have no idea how to talk to people in general but that's not the topic)

And that is!! 18 of 18 pages!! It's this long because I didn't want to break up their fight. I hope you enjoy :)

I had to rewrite their fight like,,, 3 times lmao. I'm not very good at writing fights because I'm Incredibly Passive Aggressive and Very Non Confrontational. Thankfully my partner helped me out a bit with making the escalation feel natural, so hopefully their grievances and motivations read well. In the end, both of them are starving probably-emotionally-stunted teenage boys in a high-stress situation, and Tage is being faced constantly with one of the biggest sources of his trauma that he doesn't even remember-- of course he's going to lash out.

Fun thing I learned this time around, if I struggle with planning a chapter, it can kind of help to write it out in prose like I would a fanfic, and then translate it to comic form. This is how I eventually ended up with 18 pages of comic,,, because I can't really estimate how much I'll need to draw when I'm writing in prose. In turn, this did help a lot with adding more natural behaviors between dialogue, like Tage tapping his finger to fidget while crossing his arm, or all of their pointing and gesturing while they're arguing.
