it’s grey outside, the clouds heavy but not quite snowing yet; it’s warmer than it’s been on clearer days, still cold but almost pleasant, and quiet.

you make sure to give yourself extra time to do your stretches in the morning after you go to camila’s to get breakfast. the atmospheric pressure of the incoming storm is, unsurprisingly, causing your back to ache, but that’s not new and it doesn’t really faze you at this point. if things get bad enough — and they do, sometimes — you just reschedule your plans and take pain meds and muscle relaxers from dr salvius after you do your physical therapy exercises. but your hands don’t ache and you don’t have any numbness in your feet, your temperature is normal, and so you go through your routine and feel better by the end of it.

beatrice picks you up at eleven on the dot, as she confirmed twice over text the evening before with perfect punctuation that made you feel a little bit like you were in trouble but was charming anyway.

It can make you feel “othered” or maybe even less than, compared to your peers. everyone is confused sometimes, and everyone gets frustrated from being confused sometimes! but the difference is, when you just can’t seem to grasp the reasoning for things over and over again, and are made to feel bad about it, it can result in the person feeling broken or hopeless (which lucas literally calls him for not getting his metaphor for an opportunity to talk to his ex girlfriend).

honestly it’s probably one of mikes biggest insecurities, he’s ridiculed by his own friends for not understanding simple things that come easy to them, for being oblivious to things, being ‘blind’ to things, constantly.

Mike just so happens to make this face a lot when things having to do with girls come up. especially in s3 when lucas is trying to guide mike in his relationship with el, something he seems to know a lot about and understands easily compared to mike. almost everything lucas says to do, mike just simply doesn’t get. but again, it’s not that he doesn’t understand the words coming out of lucas’s mouth, or how to do the things he’s telling him. he’s confused by his own disinterest and lack of motivation to do what lucas is telling him he needs to do in order fix his relationship with el, in contrast to lucas, who is completely confident in his methods. he doesn’t understand why people would do these things, or why they would actually work.

And I think this also shows just how well he actually knows how to go about these situations in a way that works for him, because he does it flawlessly with will every season.

In s1 we see him do the Mike Face (that’s what i’ll be calling it for consistency) before being presented with anything having to do with girls, he hasn’t even met el yet. this gives us some lore of the expression (lmao), and let’s us see what it really means before attaching it to anything specific (like distaste for women).

Here we see him grimace in response to bullying:

If we apply what i’ve already said about the expression, he clearly doesn’t understand the bullies’ motive for making fun of them, which reflects his personal values. re: “so? the x-men were weirdos,” and “I think it’s kind of cool. it’s like you have superpowers or something,” etc. which is kind of obvious, most kids who get bullied don’t agree with it, but why have him make this face in response to it rather than anger or fear or something. instead he looks at them like he’s smelling something bad lol. he just looks so confused, like, ‘why? why are you doing this?’

Mike rarely makes fun of his friends. he only judges their motives, reasoning, approaches, plans, and ideas. which also plays into how his understanding of other peoples logic is shown. mike is always the one to make a plan that works, he doesn’t dislike other peoples ideas because he didn’t come up with them, he dislikes them because he can see the flaws in them. mike can create a perfect plan that takes everything into consideration. because he is autistic. 🤭

(btw Im not saying every single person on the spectrum is a fucking genius that can detect every inconsistency in any given situation lol mike is just shown to be good at the devising part of plans in the show, and why have that as one of his strengths if not to show how his brain works, just like other characters having strengths in different areas to show how their brain works)

And I know he’s also just simply upset over the fact they’re getting bullied in the first place, nobody wants to go through that. but it’s the presence of this specific repeated expression that will give us some background for future reference in the different circumstances it shows up in.

So the main things that repeatedly invoke the Mike Face are:

When somebody does anything that goes against your own principles, it’s hard to understand why they would, or could. that’s what makes them principles, they’re things you stand by because you just can’t see it any other way. for example, think of something like premeditated murder. this (most likely) goes against your personal values, which makes it very difficult for you to understand why someone would do it.

The other two are pretty obvious in that they’re things some people simply don’t experience (which says a lot about mike if you know what I mean teehee). as we all know, it can be harder to understand things that we don’t personally experience ourselves. that is the thing that all of these have in common: mike not understanding the reasoning behind them, and his difficulty in accepting it. which is very autistic of him lmao.

Mike is not canonically autistic, but he is very coded, and if we take that—whatever the in-show equivalent to autism is—into consideration, the extent to which mikes confusion surrounding these things goes compared to his friends makes a lot of sense,*which also greatly plays into the disposition of his arc. lucas dustin and will all disagree about things sometimes, but they get over it fairly quickly. mike on the other hand is dramatic and has a hard time letting things go, which is why there is emphasis on him being confused as shit all the time! lmao

Anyway, what that means is there is a purposeful tenaciousness to the things that result in the Mike Face. they’re supposed to stick in your head, the things he doesn’t understand/like/agree with.

This is the reason it’s so obvious that mike was lying in his monologue to el despite the absence of the Mike Face (although, he did look pretty close to it a few times lol), because that would be way too on the nose, literally. instead they have connected the characters recognizable grimace with a motif in the show: love at first sight essentially equating them to each other in your head.

We are shown time and time again that mike does not believe you can like or dislike somebody you haven’t known for very long, and so have the writers themselves. these are only two out of like four different examples throughout the show:

Now circling back to mikes difficulty understanding lucas’s instructions in s3 pertaining his relationship with el, this clearly belongs in the aforementioned area: attraction to girls.

There’s a lot of this in s3 as you can see, but it’s definitely present in every season. even 1:

There are so many more instances that Im not going to put here because I don’t have room but that simply proves my point, you don’t need to see them. because it has been so drilled into our subconscious through the association of these two things in the show (and many others), that if you were to visualize mike flat out stating “I like girls,” it’d be really, really weird. because, other than el (supposedly) …since when?

Alright. we all know the phrase ‘friends don’t lie’ lol. this was technically created by mike, so telling the truth between friends was recognized in that moment as one of mikes core principles. if we take that and apply it to moments he’s lied to in the show, the Mike Face will be there as well because we’ve established it as one of the main things he cannot abide.

The only exception to this is when he himself lies, which makes sense because he can understand his own reasoning for it, and validate his lying based on that. but anyone else does it and it’s:

*What other character is shown to have so many strong opinions on things that other characters just don’t really care much about? It is to contradict what the casual viewer sees and hears, because as we know, a good portion of stranger things fans have mikes character all wrong. either because they trust his actions blindly (ga), or they misconstrue his behavior to their favor (milevens), or both! this was done so that when mike has his character arc in s5, despite what we’ve been shown, it will be clear that the opposite was true all along. the patterns that our subconscious picked up on will become evident.

Im not at all saying there’ll be a big reveal that mike is autistic in s5 lmao, his coding just has a lot to do with his character and gives an explanation (other than the heaps of unrelated evidence that he’s autistic) for why he makes such a big deal out of these things (girls, lying, love at first sight), or has such a strong reaction to them in contrast to other characters. because it needs to be very clear that he disagrees.

Basically what Im saying is mikes autistic traits help in demonstrating his hidden queerness through a single facial expression. lol what a sentence.

▪ we can often feel misunderstood by others as if we are talking to someone but we don't really feel that the other person understands us we can talk to someone and suddenly someone interrupts us, feeling ignored and alone even around a large number of people around us can be something we struggle so much, apart from the feeling of alienation and loneliness and not knowing who we rlly are, sometimes we look in the mirror but we have a blurred image of ourselves as if we were but we were not.. ‧₊˚✩彡

I think Engie would be a meerkat based mainly on the fact that they are insanely skilled builders. Meerkats are known to build super intricate underground homes. It also doesn't hurt that they are social creatures that tend to live in big groups, and are like crazy violent, even though they might not look the part.

Maybe an obvious choice, but! Just because its obvious doesn't mean it isn't true. Rottweilers are super friendly and loyal to their families but can also be great attack dogs. Rottweilers are strong enough to kill humans, also these dogs are UNITS! They can weigh in at 130 lbs. (58 kg). So I definitely think Heavy would be a rottweiler, or probably any big dog in general.

Scout definitely matches up with African wild dogs, super fast, agile, and hyper aware, and will run you down at 44 mph (70 kph) and have insane stamina when chasing down prey. They are also amazing at their hunts with an 85% success rate, so I think he'd make a good wild dog :)

*Minor Spoilers* Strap in, because this is going to be a long rec post. This story hit pretty much all my personal buttons on the parent AU side, so I knew it would end up being a favorite of mine. But then, to combine it with such a rich and wonderful story of how Crowley and Ezra grew up together as best friends? It felt tailor-made for me.

Let's start with the present. Crowley is the father of five-year-old Warlock, owns a very successful flower shop, and has moved to Tadfield to be closer to that branch of the business. Ezra has just lost his sister Eliza and is now the guardian to his nephew Adam. Both men are content with their lives, but the memory of their fallout plagues them both. In the past, we follow their entire history—from their first meeting, to new boyfriends, supporting each other through hard times, and the unbearable pain of their unspoken mutual pining.

I loved everything about this story. As parents, they're both amazing. They love being dads, they never see their sons as a burden, and I'm so thankful that this story doesn't cause any unnecessary angst for them in this aspect. Their family is built on love, safety, and trust. I adored the boys, their new routines, and their entire extended family of side characters.

I was fascinated by their past relationships. Every person each of them dated was such a complex and interesting side character. I appreciated how even when a partner is flawed, they're not portrayed as evil—especially Gabriel. Yes, he's an asshole, and he can't take no for an answer, but he's not evil. He does nothing to purposely sabotage Ezra's happiness, which was something I was honestly expecting a bit. The character of Oscar here was a particular standout for me. I also loved how the red string of fate kept connecting them in ways I don't think they'll ever realize. Which is lovely, but also a little silly in that it almost feels like there's only like 8 queer men in all of Britain. But each relationship taught them more about life and themselves, and yes, maybe it would have been easier for them if they confessed their love earlier in their lives. However, that wasn't meant to be; they came together at exactly the right point in their lives. They were meant to have this wonderful family together.

And watching them grow up together? I was glued to every moment. Their family lives were unique and complex. Completely original to this story, which sometimes can feel too removed from canon. But it didn't feel that way to me ever. Or if it ever did, it wasn't a negative. I don't believe this is the kind of story you could scrub out the Good Omens and repackage it as any other couple. Even though technically it should be easy to do with this set up. There isn't that much Good Omens canon in it, but still, this just feels like Crowley and Aziraphale despite how much of an AU it is.

Ok, I gotta stop before this becomes even longer, there are SO MANY plot points I could talk about. But seriously, if you love parent stories or stories of them being friends as kids, this is a must-read. It's satisfyingly long, but also so effortless that you will spend hours in this world, and it'll feel like seconds. The writing is excellent, so detailed that you'll feel like you're actually there, but never gets bogged down in itself. This is now a forever favorite of mine!

how do you feel about jaime and tyrion’s eventual reunion. it breaks my heart bc their relationship is never gonna be what it was and neither of them realise how important they are to the other. even now that theyre leagues apart both of them grieve for the other whilst simultaneously convincing themselves that they hate each other. its so depressing but i dont have high hopes for them.

I love them both so much too. The way they viewed each other before the Tysha confession is so interesting: link. They both admire each other, and seek to emulate the qualities that they recognize as ever present in the other and feel that they lack themselves.

I think bc both might be involved in the WFTD there is some hope left. It is very clear that they still have love for each other, love that seeps through when they are off guard, lingering affection they repress: link. I dont think grrm would have emphasized that so much if he didnt seek to provide the reader with a tiny flicker of hope that those two may still meet again. The thing is, Jaime should really feel no rage towards him, none that I feel is really that justified anyway (Tyrion did not even kill Joff, he is not actually the monster they all say he is, he said things because he wanted to hurt Jaime for how he hurt him), his negativity towards Tyrion is certainly not as intense as his is towards him after the fallout. It is more bitterness, and for a mix of reasons. He did not really grieve Tywin like that, and much of AFfC is him examining his relationship with his father’s legacy, and he ends up going a certain opposing direction at the end of ADwD. Tyrion was justified in killing his abuser in my eyes and I cheered to see that vile man fall 💯 and i know catharsis was not the point and it leads to a spiral, but you know what i mean. That is also not what Jaime is truly upset with, he blames himself more for that. He is more upset over being confronted with truth, and a sense of deeper betrayal. Anyway, I think it is Tyrion that is in a position with to forgive Jaime, bc I think it is the latter that is a more guilty party here. The Tysha case really disillusioned Tyrion hard regarding his “perfect” older brother who he could forgive everything. Another interesting aspect though is that Tyrion does not really know the new Jaime yet, despite their interaction when he rescues and frees him. Once they reunite it will be way more apparent to him that he is not the golden son anymore. He is gonna be a broken cripple who has faced LSH. Which is especially interesting considering how Jaime was absolutely not free of blindspots regarding the ableism that Tyrion faced despite the kindness and love he showed him compared to his close family (see interactions in AGoT). There is a reason that he thinks about Tyrion during this moment: “still, long after they had snuffed out the torch they'd used to sear his bloody stump, days after, he could still feel the fire lancing up his arm, and his fingers twisting in the flames, the fingers he no longer had. He had taken wounds before, but never like this. He had never known there could be such pain. Sometimes, unbidden, old prayers bubbled from his lips, prayers he learned as a child and never thought of since, prayers he had first prayed with Cersei kneeling beside him in the sept at Casterly Rock. Sometimes he even wept, until he heard the Mummers laughing. Then he made his eyes go dry and his heart go dead, and prayed for his fever to burn away his tears. Now I know how Tyrion has felt, all those times they laughed at him.”

Tyrion also has some misconceptions about Jaime, but that is very understandable to me bc the Jaime he could see then was the individual that buried his idealism and ability to care and live outside of being on autopilot under layers of violence, sex, dissociation, and faux insouciance. So it is easy to see why Tyrion’s vision of him does not exactly match up with the version that we see in ASoS & AFfC (e.g. Tyrion was convinced Jaime would murder Lancel once he found out about the affair, the opposite happens). I certainly think it is gonna be a difficult reunion, and the relationship will never be what it once was, but I think it should not be ruled out that those two will be able to love one another again in some way. Maybe they will also be able to view one another in a more real way, truly go beyond the surface, because I think before there were plenty misconceptions anyway. and the concept that george keeps emphasizing with jaime a lot in interviews is the “possibility of forgiveness.”

Outfits as the atlas six characters

These are outfits that represent their characters not necessarily something they would wear (though sometimes they can also be that).

Reina:

This outfit is based on her fully accepting her powers and embracing her godhood. Her confidence is shown in the no-back dress she's wearing and her see-through jacket that has leaves on it (to show how her new approval of her powers).

Parisa:

Parisa's outfit is obviously meant to be enticing (ex. no shirt, pearls around the bra and lace around the thigh). However, the coat gives her a sort of professional aura and the pearls imply riches. This shows that she mostly sleeps with people to get power/money rather than out of love. Also, the ring on her ring finger implies that she's technically still married, revealing some of her past.

Libby:

Libby's outfit has an academic vibe as she's the most dedicated to her studies. She's had to work very hard to earn her place in the world and in academia as she comes from a mortal family. It also looks like the kind of outfit someone who would have a breakdown over one poor grade would wear. It's modest, showing her original lack of confidence but it's not inelegant, when it comes down to it she will prevail.

Nico:

Nico's outfit is meant to compliment Libby's as they are two halves of the same hole. His outfit is slightly more casual than Libby's as he's more relaxed than her and it has no baggy coat to prevent him from easy movement as he so enjoys.

Callum:

This outfit matches Callum for many reasons. For example, he has lots of biblical imagery surrounding him. Callum's name means "dove" and doves are an important symbol to early Christians as they stand for peace and the Holy Spirit. We also have his speech, "We all have our own curses. Our own blessings. We are the gods of our own universes, aren’t we? Destructive ones.". This is very biblical, both because of his own beliefs and its involvement with Reina in her god-complex plotline. Finally, we have this quote, "Tristan forced himself not to flinch when Callum raised a hand, touching his thumb to the center of Tristan’s forehead. A blessing, or the mockery of one.". Callum literally gives a blessing which fits with this religious-inspired outfit. But is it religious or is it mocking religion? The gloves symbolize decadence, deceit and keeping one's guard up/reluctance to be vulnerable all of which resonate with Callum's character.

Tristan:

The gloves again. This time deceit represents all the people manipulating him and his own deceit/betrayal in trying to kill Callum. The gloves also show how Tristan constantly keeps his guard up, suspicious of everyone. Thirdly, the gloves are a connection between Callum and Tristan's outfits showing their uncanny similarity (which might've been one of the reasons that Callum manipulated him). Finally, the outfit is grimy and almost dystopian, signifying Tristan's pessimistic view of the world and his paranoia.

Dalton:

This is the perfect outfit for Dalton. Parisa describes his cheekbones as "princely" more than once and to the magical criminal underbelly, he is known as The Prince. Not to mention part of himself is literally TRAPPED IN A TOWER! So obviously I choose a prince outfit, but of course, it's dark as The Prince is a dangerous and dark individual.

Atlas if he stopped wearing tweed for two seconds:

HEAVY SYMBOLISM HERE! The black and gold aesthetic is reminiscent of The Library/The Society which Atlas has a lot of himself tied to it as a caretaker. At first, the readers don't even really know much about Atlas except his status as a caretaker. The swords represent The Library/The Society and this quote at the start of The Atlas Six, "Beware the man who faces you unarmed. If in his eyes you are not the target, then you can be sure you are the weapon". The initiates are literally Atlas's weapons/swords. Stars represent "positivity, happiness or renewal" and in this outfit, they show how the initiates, specifically Tristan, are Atlas's hope of getting to another universe/world and escaping his guilt and depression.

Ezra:

Ezra's mother died as a result of a shooting. He clearly cares for his mother a great deal because he went back in time repeatedly in an attempt to save her. Unfortunately, her death is what Ezra calls an "unalterable event". However, Ezra has made many questionable decisions such as kidnapping his girlfriend. Based on the evidence in the book his mother would likely be '"sad" about this. Not to forget his involvement in The Forum's less savoury practices, especially since Ezra came from a poor family. Because Ezra tries very hard to appear normal and mundane I choose a t-shirt for his outfit. The yellow colour represents joy, happiness, and hope, all things that Atlas gave Ezra when they first met, only to do the opposite by unravelling Ezra's and filling him with hopelessness and guilt the last time they met.

Honestly, Clavis isn't the best with verbal discussions about implementing a kink beforehand. He may bring it up, but it's rather like an off-handed comments instead of sitting down and discussing it; we know he kind of dances around discussions with his flowery and frustrating language.

However, with that being said, if you ever express discomfort or disinterest with what he is doing, he will stop things immediately. He's not an asshole, he still wants you to enjoy yourself and what he's doing, and he never wants to scare you away, despite what his insecurities say. He's also fairly good at picking up on what you may like, such as similar interests, so the things he introduces in the bedroom are only ever things that he believes you'll enjoy already based on prior conversations.
