Writecamp Day 1 👩🏻‍💻✍🏻🏕️
Thank you @agirlandherquill for creating and hosting this writing challenge/tag game!
Day One Kickoff is here and rules and enrollment is here. All are welcome to join!
For the Day 1 prompt I chose "The weariness of time." I used this prompt to write a new passage for my main WIP, The Blood Cleaners, a YA Dystopia.
His eyes met with a grandfather clock on the other side of the room. Nearly an hour had passed since he took the bus. Late afternoon was slipping away to evening. He took comfort knowing it wasn’t bedtime yet. He would have trouble sleeping knowing that each day that went by, Joselyn would be on her on her own. The burden was all on her. He missed her. He knew she missed him. He missed Elena and Miriam. Each day, each hour, each minute had to be torture. It was his fault. He cursed himself. He was stupid. Of course he’d have to be in Arthur longer than a week to have any hope of success. He knew Joselyn well enough to believe she would keep waiting even after a week passed. Yet she could only keep the secret for so long before someone ratted them all out. He almost regretted listening to John. He was no longer blissfully unaware of just how much this revolution risked. If they failed, Corpa…would be gone. And it would be his fault.

The Poisoning of Webb Hall - WIP Intro
Tumblr media
Title: The Poisoning of Webb Hall
Genre: Sapphic gothic historical thriller with horror elements.
Comp Titles: Rebecca x Arachnophobia
Length: ~90-100k words (novel).
Status: First draft + major revisions.
Brief Synopsis:
Desperate for stability following the Blitz, fleeing from mistakes in her past, and hearing nothing of her brother serving on the frontlines of an increasingly violent war, young newlywed Aurora Finch must find out who - or what - is killing those close to her and why spiders have come to infest all of their corpses. As paranoia mounts after being named a suspect in the murders when her husband suddenly falls ill, and fearing that she is haunted by a literal shadow of death that has followed her all her life, she is driven to find security and companionship in the company of her cold, mysterious housekeeper, a woman who has watched Aurora from the dark corners of Webb Hall ever since her arrival to the estate as a bride.

Can @neil-gaiman make a young author like me feel better about typos on my already published back cover…
👉🏻👈🏻😖💛
The book itself only has 8 mistakes apparently in 326 pages…
P.S. thanks for writing Good Omens because without it I’d have never met my Fiancé! The Crowley to my Aziraphale…Congrats on season 3!!
Edit because only two people have bought my book

Structuring Your Fight Scene
adapted from <Writer's Craft> by Rayne Hall
Suspense
Show your characters gearing up, readying themselves.
The pace is slow, the suspense is high (use suspense techniques)
Provide information about terrain, numbers, equipment, weapons, weather.
May have dialogue as the opponents taunt each other, hurl accusations, or make one final effort to avoid the slaughter.
Don't start too early - we don't need to see the hero getting out of bed, taking a shower and having tea.
2. Start
Fighters get into fight stance: knees slightly bent, one leg forward, abdominal muscles tensing, body turned diagonally, weapons at the ready.
Each side will usually try to be the first to strike, as this will give them advantage.
The movements in this section need to be specific and technically correct.
3. Action
This section may be quick or prolonged. If prolonged, no blow-by-blow descriptions are needed.
Focus on the overall direction of the fight
Make use of the location to make characters jump, leap, duck, hide, fall, etc.
Mention sounds of weapons
4. Surprise
Something unexpected happens: building catches fire, a downpour, relief force arrives, staircase collapses, bullet smashes into the only lightbulb and everything goes dark, hero losses his weapon, etc.
Add excitement, raise the stakes.
5. Climax
Both sides are tired and wounded
The hero is close to giving up, but is revived with passion
Move to the terrain's most dangerous spot: narrow swining rope-bridge, a roof-edge, sinking ship, etc.
Don't rush the climax! Hold the tension
6. Aftermath
The fight is over: bes buddies lying dead, bandaging, reverberating pain, etc.
Use sense of sight and smell
The hero may experience nausea, shaking, tearfulness or get sexually horny
Fight scene length
Historical/adventure/fantasy: 700-1000w
Romance: 400-700w

in writing, if you're stuck on a sentence or paragraph you're supposed to just jusmp to the next part and keep writing. fine-tuning is for the revision phase not the first draft
unfortunately every single fucking letter is a bear trap

when you find a fanfic writer whose work just sings to you… i would read anything you write…. i would wade into a tag no matter how deranged… i would travel to the ends of the earth for you if only to soothe your little oyster shell just so you would be comfortable enough to make another pearl whenever you felt like it … i would love you tenderly and support you as you carefully place every grain of sand onto your little castle, regardless of how long it takes, if only to enjoy your words just a little longer
