When Jungkook met you for the first time, his entire world shifted on its axis. He closed the distance between you faster than you expected, and without saying a word, you felt one of his arms sliding around your waist, grasping it tightly. “Tech …” you whisper as you recognized him, “What … What happened ? Where are we ?” you ask with confusion, trying to sit down. You realized that what was touching your face lately was his hand when it slid from it as you raised your upper body.

You heard him muttered a “Oh thanks maker you’re alive” in a relieved tone, but your head was spinning, and you would have fallen back on the ground if he hadn’t been here to catch you by the shoulders.

“Be careful, your head appeared to have suffered a violent shock against a rock while we were underwater, you probably are badly concussed. I suggest that you stay still for now.” He quickly informed you as he sat on your left, sliding an arm around your shoulders to ensure your balance, and pulling you closer to him. Without thinking about it, you slid one of your own arms around his waist, and rested your aching head on his shoulder, which gave him the reflex to tighten his grip around you in a protective gesture.

“Underwater …” you mumble, slowly connecting the dots.

He looked at you with a concerned look, “Yes, do you remember what happened ?”

You slightly raised your head to meet his gaze through his googles. His eyes were watery, but you put that on the water that must still be trapped behind the glassed²&a.

“Yeah, I did … Omega, the ipsium, the fall, the river … I think I remember everything, except the moment when we get out of the water …”

“That’s a good think if you remember all of it. In fact, you went unconscious after your head hit that rock, so you wouldn’t be able to remember much after that, that’s normal.”

“So, what happened after?” you ask curiously.

“Well, I spent a moment battling against the current after you got hit, but I somehow managed to reach for you, and moments after we fell down a waterfall into this cave. I just had to carry you out of the water onto the edge then.”

Your eyes widened at his words as you suddenly realized what it meant. You didn’t answer anything for a few second, dreamingly looking at him.

“Thank you” you whisper.

“For … For what ?” he mumbles in surprise, still holding your gaze. If there had been just a bit more of light in that cave, you would have noticed the slight blushing passing on his face for sure.

“For jumping right after me, for preventing me from drowning, for saving my life.” You breath out with emotion.

“Well … That’s what squad mates do, right ? I know you would have probably done the same for any of us.” he answers after a few seconds, trying his best to not let himself be distracted by your closeness and keep his usual factual tone.

“You’re right”, you speak back, a bright smile growing on your face, “Of course I would have done the same for any of you, without any hesitation !”

His heart melted instantly when he saw your joyful expression, just like every times you were smiling, except that this time, it was even more precious and meaningful for him, for only minutes before he thought that he might never see that smile again.

“I know” he repeats in a whisper, smiling back.

But soon a shadow passed on his face, making his smile vanish and his gaze lowering, breaking the eye contact between you. He suddenly seemed concerned by something that you couldn’t discern.

“Hey … Tech, are you okay ?”

He stayed silent for a long time, looking like he was in the middle of a complicated internal dilemma.

“In fact”, he finally lets out, still looking at the ground, “I think that I have something to tell you …”

His tone was shy and hesitant, contrasting with his usual confident tone.

“What ?” you ask, raising an eyebrow, confused and with absolutely no clue about what to expect.

The atmosphere became tensed as his face turned expressionless, increasing your worries. He remained silent again. You felt that his struggling was starting to overwhelm him, and you could feel his nervousness and his heart beat accelerating.

You had never saw him like that before, and for a moment you weren’t sure how to react. He seemed paralyzed, and it was nearly frightening. That closeness wasn’t usual neither, he habitually wasn’t really fond of physical contacts, and now that the mist of your coma had dissipated and that you were able to fully notice and think about the position in which you both were, you found it strange that he was the one, in the first place, to initiate it by pulling you closer.

You didn’t want to become too intrusive, but you thought that, maybe, one more physical contact could create an electroshock to pull him out of his difficult thoughts. At this point, you were so confused and distraught that you weren’t sure what to do.

So you let go of his waist to move your hand toward his head and the back of his neck, gently caressing his exposed skin with the back of your fingers.

“Tech, please, talk to me, everything will be alright …” you whisper to him softly, eyes locked on his face.

It caused exactly what you wanted it to do, as he slowly raised his head to look back at you right in the eyes. He opened his mouth like if he wanted to say something, but no words got out of it. His eyes were sad, and he remained silent for a few more seconds, before letting out a sigh and finally started to speak.

“The truth is …” he began, his brows furrowing and an expression of fear appearing on his face, “when I got you out of the water and noticed that you were unconscious and barely breathing, then when I saw the wound on your head … Something happened in my mind ... I started to realize that I was, probably, about to see you die … That I was about to lose you for real. You didn’t respond to me for several minutes, I tried my best to help you, but it didn’t seem to work, and for the first time in my life, I felt kind of …. Powerless, and useless. It was the worst thing that I have ever felt, and, honestly, I was frightened, because the last thing that I wanted was to lose you. For a moment, I thought that I would never be able to talk to you, to share things with you, to see you smile … And when you finally woke up, when you finally opened your eyes again, I told myself that I was the luckiest person ever to still have you with me, alive and breathing …”

The words were escaping from his mouth so fast that he was now nearly out of breath. He lets out another sigh, searching for his words, nervous, terrified to confess things that had been on his mind for a long time now but dying to do it at the same time.

“In fact …”, he goes on, with a more contained voice, retrieving his usually calm and composed tone, “It made me realize that maybe I should tell you about my feelings before I definitely miss the chance and lose you for real. Even if telling you will certainly not change anything, it’s even probably not a good idea, but I’ve got to a point where I’m not sure if I can hold it anymore. And I think that the opportunity that I have right now to be alone with you will maybe not happen again soon, so I think that it’s the right moment, especially after what we just went through together…”

You confusedly looked at him, absent mindlessly raising a brow.

“I’m … not sure to understand what’s going on here …” you let out slowly, your brain overthinking the situation, preparing for what could possibly come next.

“I know” he adds, “that’s because I’ve always did my best to not let anything show. I have the chance to be able to compartmentalize my feelings to focus on the relevant and rational ones only. Even if it’s a bit exhausting, I have to admit. I have a hard time understanding what I happen to feel sometimes, so expressing it is even harder. It’s easier to just push all of it in a corner and try to ignore it.”

You could feel he was still struggling with his words under his confident tone.

“Yeah, I know about that, it’s exhausting, indeed …” you sadly answer.

“Well, all that I wanted to say is that …” he pauses to take a deep breath, “I think that I probably … Have fallen in love with you, and I, for once, just can’t ignore it even if it’s frightening me.”

Your eyes widen and you unconsciously gasped at his words.

“What ?”, you mumble, unable to say more. For a moment, you were frozen on the spot trying to get over what you had just heard and to understand how it could have happened, and how you didn’t see anything coming, as well as wondering if anyone else was knowing anything. You were still processing his words when you felt his grip around your body loosening, his hand slowly letting go of you.

“I knew it wasn’t a good idea …” he mutters, lowering his gaze, a regretful expression appearing on his face, “I’m sorry, I knew I shouldn’t have told you that, that’s why I wasn’t planning on ever doing it. I guess I’ve definitely ruined our already existent relationship now …”

He was trying his best to look composed, but you could still feel how seriously he was affected. He was usually never addressing his feelings openly, so you could easily imagine how hard it could have been for him to open up to you, and how bad he must feel right now.

After all, you were understanding him deeply, for you had been refraining your own feeling as well. But as he just said, the opportunity will probably not happen again, and you didn’t want to miss it.

Holding on tight on his shoulder to prevent him from moving away, you finally find the courage to answer him.

“Hey, please, don’t say that …” you whisper, “you didn’t ruin anything …”

It was hard for you to find the right words, you were as frightened as him, and you had never considered the idea of mutuals feelings a possibility.

“I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting that … Not because it is a bad thing, but because …” you sight, suddenly realizing what you were about to say, “… because we’re in this together …”

He raised an eyebrow, not sure if his mind understood what you meant correctly.

“Are you telling me that, you too, have feelings for me ? In the same kind of way, I mean ?”

“Yes, that’s what I’m trying to tell you … I was so sure that I was the only one in this case that I’ve tried to ignore it and burry it as far as I could in the back of my mind too, but that’s not how it works … And I didn’t want to ruin everything between us neither, so I just stayed quiet about it ...”

He looked at you, completely silent and still, processing what he had just heard, before he finally could talk again.

“What are we doing about it then ?”

“I don’t know, what do you want to do ? I don’t want to force my choices on you, you know, if you prefer for us to never make anything out of these feelings because that’s easier that way, I’ll understand, I don’t want to rush you …” you lower your head, that very thought of it suddenly breaking your heart. He didn’t say anything at first, and you let it sinks, not really sure what to expect.

“What if I wanted to give it a try ? After all, the probabilities of you having reciprocated feelings for me were very low, so I think that I’m lucky enough not to waste that chance, what do you think ?” he finally answer, smiling at you softly, yet still a bit nervous.

“I think that it could be a very good idea.”

Your face were burning at that moment, and you were glad that the light was dimed enough for him not to notice it.

“Even when knowing how differently my mind works ?” he asks more hesitantly.

“I know you Tech, that’s a part of why I fell for you, don’t worry about that.” You reassure him.

“Well, I’m even more lucky than I thought I already was then.”

You chuckled at his remark, then something came back to your mind, and you couldn’t help but address it to him, out of curiosity.

“Was that your hand I felt on my cheek when I woke up ?”

“Yes, it was ... I’m sorry, I just … let myself got overwhelmed by the emotion when checking your heartbeat …”

“No, don’t be sorry, it was comforting honestly, even if I didn’t understand where it was coming from at first. I was just thinking … Can you … Can you do it again, please ?”

It was true, as soon as it seemed to you that the feeling was coming from him touching you, you had wished for that contact to happen again, even more intensely than the usual, and even though your mind tried to trick you into thinking that it was just some sort of hallucination caused by the lack of oxygen.

Looking at you right in the eyes and without a word, he slowly reached for your face with one of his hands, brushing your cheek slightly with the tips of his fingers at first, to end up cupping It with his whole palm, his thumb gently caressing your skin. You shivered under his touch, closing your eyes to fully focus on the sensation, savoring every second of it.

He was starting to shyly close the distance between your two faces, craving for an even more intimate contact, when a familiar voice suddenly exits from his commlink, making you both jump in surprise, cutting the moment.

“Found it !” Wrecker’s enthusiastic voice beams through the device.

“Alright Tech, we’ve got her, and we found the gear and the ipsium.” Hunter’s voice soon followed.

You looked at each other, a bit stunned, and you quickly understood that he must have contacted them after getting out of the water and asked them to find Omega and retrieve your stuff.

“Good” Tech answers, with a more confident and directive tone, breaking the eye contact with you.

“Next, you’ll need to carefully scale down the narrow crevasse and descend into the aqueduct below. You will come upon us once the rapids eject you over the waterfall. But you must not compromise the mineral vials or you will perish.”

You heard Wrecker groans in dissatisfaction as a response.

“Well, that’s a way to motivate them.” you let out ironically.

At the sound of your voice, Omega instantly came into the conversation.

“(y/n) ! Are you okay ?” she exclaims, a mix of concern and relief in her voice.

“Yeah, don’t worry, I’m fine, thanks to Tech.” you softly smile at him.

“I was so worried about you, when I saw you fell, I … I’m sorry, it was all my fault …”

Her voice was anxious and the words were escaping her mouth way too fast, her apologies and guilt broke your heart.

“Don’t ever say that, Omega, it’s not your fault, you did your best. It’s gonna be okay, I’m okay, and we’ll be reunited soon, right ?” you try to reassure her.

“Right” the young girl answers, “I can’t wait to see you again, I miss you, (y/n).”

“I miss you too little one.”

“Alright then, we’re going, see you soon !” Hunter’s voice came through the commlink again, before the communication cut.

You let out a long sigh of relief, then the silence fell upon the two of you, only disturbed by the murmur of the water. You both sat here awkwardly, still holding each other tight, not really knowing what to do. Your eyes met again and you held each other’s gaze for a moment before you finally say something.

“Well …” you whisper nervously, “What a hell of a day, uh …”

The remark made him chuckles, easing the tension floating in the air. You looked so cute being all nervous around him.

A sudden burst of courage took over him, and he gently cupped your cheeks with both of his hands this time, leaning forward you and closing the already tight space separating you once and for all, to settle his forehead against yours.

You closed your eyes, enjoying the pleasing sensation of his skin against yours once again, as the beating of your heart started to accelerate. His nose came brushing against yours, then his trembling lips slowly moved forward, staying so close but so far at the same time. You knew that he was so nervous that he couldn’t go further. His heart was racing too, and after a few seconds of hesitation, you decided to give him a little help to close the remaining distance.

As soon as your mouth met his, he instantly answered the kiss and pulled you even closer. He was holding you so desperately and his lips were so eager to taste yours that you knew he had been waiting for that for a long time. It was shy and a bit clumsy, but yet soft and intense. He couldn’t resist the urge to give you another kiss right after the first one, more confident but just as soft.

After that, you stay forehead against forehead, his hands still framing your face, one of yours still settled on his shoulder as the other one was running its fingers gently through his hair, looking dreamingly at each other.

“What’s gonna happens now ?” you ask after a moment, “Are we gonna tell them ?”

“I don’t know … To be honest, I think that they’re going to notice it rather quickly, it’s hard to hide anything from them for more than a couple days, and “a couple days” is an optimistic range actually.”

“Oh I believe you on that !” you giggle.

“To be fair” he adds, “I think that Hunter and Echo have already saw through me somehow. I have no idea about how they managed to find out, but they did, judging by the couple of remarks and allusions they had already gave me.”

The tough of Hunter and Echo teasing Tech about you made you laugh, they really where talented when it came to reading their brothers.

“Yeah, I see what you mean, they did the same to me, and I’m still trying to figure out how they found out for me too …” you chuckle.

You didn’t get the chance to finish your conversation, as a loud splash sound and a couples of mixed screams came bursting through the calm atmosphere of the cave, announcing that the rest of the group had successfully made their way to you.

At their sight, you looked at each other, and as they were swimming in your direction, Tech leaned his head toward you and whispered in your ear with an amused smile :

“Well, let’s see how many times we got before getting caught now !”

Firefox (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Obviously I recommend Firefox above all else, especially with chromium-based browsers moving onto manifest V3.

Bitwarden (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Good password manager! Used it for years with no complaints!

AdNauseam (Firefox/Chrome) - My adblocker. It's built upon uBlock Origin and has all the same features, but it actively clicks on the ads to waste advertiser money. If that's not up your alley, uBlock Origin is fantastic too!

Wayback Machine extension (Firefox/Chrome/Safari) - Allows you to make snapshots of pages, or view old snapshots if a page isn't loading correctly!

XKit ReWritten (Firefox/Chrome) - Pretty much a must-have for Tumblr. Has a ton of features to make navigating this site much better. Full feature list here!

Discord

Vencord (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - A modified Discord client that adds support for plugins and themes. Basically allows you to install plugins from a massive list that improves Discord. (Technically against ToS. Basically, don't post that you're using it in big servers, and turn off your themes before sharing screenshots.)

Bunny (Android/IOS) - If you miss Vendetta for Discord, Bunny is an actively maintained fork of Vendetta! Basically the same as above, but for Android/IOS instead of desktop. Same warnings about ToS apply.

Aliucord (Android) - Miss the old Android app feel, and still want to have plugins/themes? Pretty cool but has a less impressive theme/plugin selection. Same warnings about ToS apply.

Bluecord (Android) - Another Discord modification without the new Discord UI!

Youtube

Freetube (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - A desktop Youtube client with adblock and sponsorblock built in. Still in beta, but very good.

Sponsorblock (Firefox/Chrome) - Pretty much a must-have for watching Youtube these days. Automatically skips over sponsors, self-promos, interaction bait, outros, intros, etc. Highly configurable!

Dearrow (Firefox/Chrome) - Haven't used this very long but I love it. Gets rid of vague or clickbait titles/thumbnails and replaces it with descriptive and more accurate thumbnails. Also built into Freetube now!

Newpipe (Android) - Lightweight Youtube client. I haven't used it myself much but people swear by it!

ReVanced (Android) - Modded Youtube client with Sponsorblock, Return Youtube Dislike, and Youtube Premium features. Doesn't support Dearrow as of 6/25/24 :( (PLEASE BE CAREFUL INSTALLING THIS. If you don't know what you're doing, you can cause some damage!)

Spotify

Mullvad VPN (Windows/Android) - The only VPN I can 100% recommend. Cheap, fast, and really cares about your privacy. It's a little under $6 USD a month!

NVDA (Windows) - A free screenreader I use for reading large blocks of text. (Notice: I am not visually impaired to the point I rely on a screenreader to navigate my PC. I use it on occasion to read text to me because I have a hard time reading. If you're looking for advice on screenreaders for the visually impaired unfortunately I'm not a good source! Maybe check out the #visually impaired, #blind, or #accessibility?)

Syncthing (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android) - Lets you sync folders across devices. It's especially good with Obsidian.

Making an app feel like a place: real-time, persistence, pictures and words

The first room in Experiment 2.

I've always been fascinated with apps that convey a sense of things happening "in the same place." From Minecraft servers to shared Google documents, many virtual platforms seem to foster a sense of shared geography by virtue of their design.

Ever since the research survey, I feel like I'm approaching a sense of what makes a virtual platform feel like a place, and the most succinct way to state those insights thus far is that it's a combination of:

Real-time

Persistence

Pictures, and

Words.

To break this down a little: the platform should support a back and forth of interactions between users who are present at the same time. This makes up what some refer to as co-presence (Schroeder, 2002). It should also support scattered, accumulative interactions between users who are not present at the same time. Changes made by one person should alter the app's state for everyone else, but also remain in place for subsequent users to see and engage with.

As for what media actually gets sent/placed in an app like this, this varies massively across platforms with different aims, but for something to feel like a place, it seems that the minimum is a combination of both spatial (i.e. visual or positional) and precise (textual) communication. (While media types aren't the focus of this post, it's a curious hunch that I will explore later.)

All of these traits would ideally be woven together into a single continuous interaction experience (rather than separate texting, drawing and streaming features, for example). The user does the rest of the work: the feeling of place emerges from what they do with the platform.

And it largely cannot be forced. But when it happens, it can be exciting.

So, let's start designing a place-like app from first principles!

It's easy to take for granted all the design elements needed to project an app's capabilities. People don't automatically "buy into" the synchronicity and asynchronicity of an app: it must be built to telegraph these features. They must be made aware that:

There are others are "present" on the same platform,

Their actions are being broadcast to all concurrent users as they happen, and,

Their changes won't simply vanish after the browser is closed.

#3 seems complex to telegraph, but it is actually the easiest solved. New users should be introduced to the app via an instance (document, room, world, whatever) that is not blank. Ideally, it would already been altered in deliberate ways.

Oftentimes, having something already there is simply the natural result of a user bringing a friend into the experience, but if you're the one launching it, you might want to put something clearly hand-made in the very first instance you publish, an exemplar to "seed" the possibilities of the app. Approach it playfully.

Now for the pricklier part. We would like our place-like app to feel synchronous, so it should update in real time. What are some ways to do this?

While I don't want to bring too much jargon into this, we can't really discuss this in abstract without at least touching on what technologies are available to us.

Before the PhD, all my synchronous apps worked by polling a server. For lightweight apps without much of a userbase, it does the job. It's how my first PhD related web project, Two Map, works, actually. An app that tacitly plots movement on a map, it sends your location data back to a server and retrieves any updates since the last call.

(My supervisor called this a "stalker app," which isn't wrong! I figured that any location-based app I made would have to explicitly request consent from the user before starting, or give the option to pick a location. But that for another post.)

But polling a server becomes a problem if more people are using an app and too many simultaneous updates emerge as a real concern.

The most accessible solution for web development is websockets, and for ease I went with Pusher, which lets you set up a websocket server with a free plan + paid tiers scaling to number of messages a day. Most programming languages/libraries that interface with the internet support TCP or UDP sockets in some form and one can pick based on needs and resources.

Whatever the protocol used, these are low-overhead connections that are kept open between app instances to relay very short segments of data - enough, usually, for you to convey and update positioning, URL pointers, and text content, or to signal for an app to refresh.

Pretty cool! But beyond the technicalities, we also need to think about how to show users that this open connection exists. The easiest and perhaps most obvious is real-time visual updates. A user adds something to the page, that thing shows up on everyone's page.

But what happens for a user who's using the app at a time when no one else is online?

That seems little outside of one's control, but there actually is a way to telegraph synchronicity even then: by letting past concurrent users record their synchronous interactions in a clear, textual way.

This is where the persistence of communicative features is paramount: if a user sees something pop up, they can react immediately with text or an image, and said reaction is preserved on the canvas. This demonstrates to fellow users, present and future, that the interaction happened as a back and forth!

Future users may not necessarily come to this conclusion from seeing past interactions, but it certainly doesn't hurt to support it.

Finally, there are more explicit ways to show that there are other people around, from user icons in a corner, to a "N users online" slug, to cursors or avatars on the page. These are often collectively called presence indicators in corporate speak.

I like to employ spatialised presence indicators (like cursors that show "where" other users' cursors are), but implementing realtime cursor indicators can be heavy on the TCP/UDP server, so since I am lacking a budget, I settle for an indicator that updates when the user makes a significant interaction (e.g. clicking the canvas to open a form).

As with everything else, this requires buy-in from the users. They need to want to play with it! There are ways to invite play, and that could be the subject of another post. But set up the platform right, and you're at least delivering an open invitation for such interactions.

Do you have any idea why people are so divided on rocking horse shoes? I think they’re cute but whenever I see people in online lolita spaces talk about them it’s either someone HATES them or someone owns a pair and they love them. Like is it really an actual issue or is it just algorithm stuff I’m seeing?

So I've been checking around, and I'm not seeing mainstream discourse in the lolita community regarding RHS. I'm thinking it's just the spaces you're in.

Trends come and go. Back in 2016, sheer socks was 100% going to get you fed upon by the Gulls, and now AP is releasing transparent all the time.

Rocking horse shoes have been part of lolita fashion for a very long time, and they're very versatile. Given the right coordination, they can work in almost any substyle. They're lolita in the same way that slapping a bow larger than the good lord himself onto your head is lolita. You don't need to justify them as being necessary in a coordinate.

They're also popular because they're comfortable. They're a flat shoe and they're very easy to walk in, provided you have stable ground and are not attempting to do some offroading. I have had a chronic ankle problem for the past two years, and I don't always have the stability necessary to keep my foot in a pointed position, but I can wear flat platforms most days and be okay if I'm careful. Foam-soled ones are lightweight and cushion shock.

Rocking horse shoes are probably the single most common and accepted lolita designer replica. They're available from a lot of different brands at a lot of different price points, and from many vendors. This makes them a lot more accessible than some other accessories. Available from a lot of different vendors means that if you have a particular foot shape, you can compare and find a brand whose last (the fake foot they make the shoes on) is more similar to your foot.

I don't think they're going anywhere in lolita fashion. I think they're a staple and they'll be there for a long time.

Cassette tapes will gain traction again in the next 10 years.

As we all know how valuable physical media is, as at time record labels will take down or paywall any accessable mucic on online platforms. Its just easier and convenient to have CDs or Vinyl because of their portability (if you have a car CDs are fucking superior). Albeit I know people have phones.

So cassettes would be niche for starters and only collectors or retro outlets would have stock. Added to the fact that walkmans and stereos with tape capabilities are becoming increasingly hard to find...

. Trends usually resurge very strong every 20-30 years

. They are portable, small and lightweight.

I’m seeing my cyber future Internet. Websites navigation exists in 3D space and consisfs of omnidirectional scrolling with different directions denoting different purposes and with UI represented by blobby forms with a variety of solid colors with a tasteful minimal gradient kind of shading which represnefs its 3D position . Phone and other devices themselves have ergonomic designs with subtly curved screens suggesting 3 dimensionality but they can be collapsed in different ways to fit in a pocket etc it’s very akin to soft robotics. They’re mostly waterproof and very difficult to break and all of the components are naturally very lightweight so they’re purposefully weighted. Different website functions start being associated with color and the same colors are used as a similar shorthand across different platforms, there’s thought put into the colors for colorblind accessibility but it is kind of hard for colorblind people. People complain about websites becoming even less unique with the use of the same colors. Nobody really types anymore everyone just slides their finger across the screen to the different letters because it’s very accurate at this point and subtle fine tuned haptics in screens allow for subtlr textural delineation of different keys. Some people think this is making people’s fingers go numb but it really isn’t. Due to new discoveries plesiosaurs begin to gain greater cultural weight and some species become household names alongside dinosaurs. The .45 ACP round has been experiencing a bit of a resurgence in popularity. Honestly, it is as much a move away from the .40 caliber, since the 9mm is also regaining a strong following. Improvements in bullet construction have made all pistol rounds more effective, meaning the other factors are more critical—shot placement, complete reliability and putting the biggest bullet on target effectively. For those interested in capacity, the 9mm is fast becoming the first choice, but for those looking to move up to a bigger bullet, the .45 ACP is king.

With this move comes a need for a combat-reliable pistol. For many, that means a full-sized pistol with the capacity of a double-stack magazine. Many of these pistols, especially in the 1911 platform, are expensive and not always well suited to practical carry. The most reliable of these tend to be the most costly, putting them out of reach for many shooters. The best choice is often a polymer-based pistol, and that’s where the Glock 21 certainly delivers. Having carried my first Glock 21 on the streets some 15 years ago, I know this pistol well, and that same pistol rides in an officer’s holster to this day. Though there have been several opportunities for him to trade it in for a newer gun, he’s rebuffed them all with great fervor. Why? Because it works, and that officer knows his life depends on it doing just that.

Glock 21 Gen4 Legacy & Future

For many, the Glock 21 is the quintessential high-capacity, .45 caliber combat pistol. It has proven reliable, accurate and indestructible. With a 13+1 capacity, it provides easily accessible firepower in a proven caliber. It maintains the ergonomics and simple practicality of all the Glock pistols, and accessories, holsters and spare magazines are plentiful. For those making the move up from the G22, the transition is simple and easy. Available with factory night sights, the G22 is ready out of the box for duty, the range or anywhere else. And all of this is at about half the cost of many high-capacity .45s.

The G21’s only real issue was its size. It is a bit larger, and those with small hands often have some difficulty controlling it. The Short Frame model helped, but the changes featured in the Glock 21 Gen4 were really what made the G21 accessible to more shooters, providing other enhancements. Handling a new Glock 21 Gen4 pistol, I first noticed the textured finish on the grip. It is a nice modification to the rougher versions of before and fits in the hand well. It just feels less abrasive while remaining solid.

Next was the magazine catch, which is not only easily reversible but also much more intuitive. I found it easier to access without needing to shift the pistol in my grip. The catch also remains flush with the grip, eliminating many of the accidental release issues many after-market parts present. It is about as close to perfect as it gets for this platform. The finger grooves on the frontstrap are nicely contoured with matching checkering. The frame is cut high into the triggerguard, allowing for a solid grip.

More Glock 21 Gen4 Features

The real difference here is in the backstraps. Unlike many systems that require you to use one panel or another, the G21 Gen4 starts with no strap. In my “keep it simple” world, this is perfect. Leaving the grip as-is provides the shortest trigger reach on this frame size to date, with nothing to come loose. If you prefer the Gen3 feel, you can simply add the medium strap. (A thicker strap is available for those with even bigger hands.) With no grip panel attached, this pistol fit me just about perfectly, so I completed all the testing in this configuration.

To round out the Gen4 package, Glock added a dual recoil spring assembly. This tends to tame how recoil feels to the hand and can add significant life to the springs. The sights provided were the base versions, a simple white-dot front and the white-outlined U-notch rear. A rail is molded into the frame to accept tactical lights. Three magazines were provided along with the commensurate reloading tool, as well as the two backstraps and a tool designed to remove the grip-strap pin. Lastly, the finish on the slide is a bit less shiny and slippery. It is more of a dull gray, which lends itself to the pistol’s no-nonsense purpose.

Glock 21 Gen4 Performance

All of the G21 pistols that I’ve shot over the years are very accurate. Short of the G20, the G21 pistol is the most accurate standard-equipped Glock for me. Testing this pistol proved to be no exception. G21s are just plain accurate and some of the easiest double-stack .45s to shoot well. The shorter trigger reach only made this better for me. I accomplished the best accuracy with the Winchester Ranger 230-grain SXT rounds, with a group measuring 1.7 inches with a cluster of four shots within about an inch. The G21 put everything into around 2 inches at 25 yards. Having had pistols at twice the price display equal or less accuracy, that is pretty impressive.

Where this pistol truly shines is on the move and under stress. This gun just ran and ran without any issues. It remains one of the softest-shooting .45 pistols out there, making it much easier to maintain accuracy on the move. The shorter reach allowed for easier trigger control, and the textured finish really locks this pistol nicely in my hand. Fired both with and without gloves, it was impossible to lose my grip on the gun. It was easy to get a good, solid grip out of the holster. I tested the G21 Gen4 from both a tactical thigh rig as well as a similar holster in an OWB-type carry mode. The draw was smooth, and the sights came up quickly. For those in need of tritium, the pistol can be ordered from the factory with night sights.

For me at least, the most noticeable advancement in this generation is the magazine catch. It may not be the most technical, but it is the most used, at least in training. In the past, magazine swaps required a pronounced shift of the pistol in my hand to get a solid release of the magazine. The Gen4 catch makes this unnecessary. Granted, my hands are pretty big, but the catch could be easily reached without a shift, facilitating very fast magazine changes. It does so without adding any pronounced protrusion, making unintentional magazine releases unlikely. The maga-zines all dropped free easily, empty or not. Loading to capacity was a bit stiff on the last round, but time and repetition will likely loosen the mags up a bit.

Gunsite Dynamics

While attending the Glock 25th Anniversary Class at Gunsite, I was able to spend a day with a G21 Gen4 utilizing a medium grip panel. Rather than change someone else’s pistol, I shot it as is. It was flawless and very accurate, making it through one of the most round-intensive days of the Gunsite 250 class. I greatly anticipated the chance to set this pistol up for my needs and really put it through its paces. Of all the Glock platforms, this is the one most often used in my career as a police officer. The G21 has always been my favorite. Even without the shortened frame, it fit my hand better than any of the other pistols.

Shooting the Gen4 version was better. The shorter frame only enhanced my ability to shoot this pistol well. The new textured finish is just about right, providing a nice mix of aggressiveness without the commensurate abrasion. The standard trigger was predictable and controllable. The new magazine release is perfect for this gun. Having access without the need for a pronounced shift of the pistol in your hand is huge. It makes fast and positive magazine changes possible without losing sight of the threat. This was especially evident when shooting on the move. You could really just move, shoot, reload and continue as necessary, staying focused on the threat.

Having never been a big fan of the “new and improved,” my opinion is different in the case of the G21. Everything changed only enhances the capabilities of this fine pistol.
