Oh my god i want a phd too but idk what the fuck am i suppossed to do a phd in like do they give you topics to choose from once you enroll in the course or it becomes evident to you as you complete your studies and reach that level.

it depends on the program. some will have you closely associated with a faculty mentor's research, like a traditional hard sciences "lab," but even in that structure you typically have to develop your own project rather than having it assigned wholesale. many of the milestones along the way, like course papers and qualifying or comprehensive exams, are often intended to help you explore potential topics before you reach the formal proposal.

i will not lie, my dissertation was originally inspired by a joke my advisor made in my first year, and i gradually fleshed it out into a real area of research as i got more knowledgeable in the field. it turned out pretty damn good for something that lodged in my brain over a post-excavation beer.

The first one is a little thing, but I bet Seiji had a crush on Marcus Washington when he was a kid--Nick's horror, Harvard's teasing, and Seiji's indignant blush imply as much.

And a fun fact, Jo posted a mini preview of baby Seiji to Patreon on February 14th...maybe I'm reading into it too much, but that's nothing new XD

Next couple of things are about the scene with the trophy case. It was really interesting and fun to see side-by-side redraws of Robert! It really illustrates the way the style has evolved, and also I gOTTA say it feels like Jo is more invested in Robert based on the level of detail she put in--like it's not just a style comparison, it's also just obvious a lot of attention was put into these shots when a) she could have just reused old shots (which she's done before, so I know it was an option), or kept it more simplified like she did when drawing the original shots.

I also think it's sweet that the redraws have Robert looking much more like Jesse than the originals.

And I am sure I will get flack for this, but I have incredible second-hand embarrassment from Nick leaving his newspaper clipping + note in the trophy case jfhdasl like bestieee noooo anyone can see that shit now oh my god please stooop

Onto some Nichoji thoughts! I love that Seiji's been confirmed as a before-bed reader! Him having a Kindle makes sense for the sheer efficiency of it too lmfao. Of course it's also adorable to see him in reading glasses <3 And then my favorite detail is Nick's stupid nightlight...notice where it is?

Rather than illuminating Nick's side of the room, it's peeking around the curtain and lighting up Seiji's reading, which is beyond adorable and sweet. I wonder whether Seiji stole it or Nick put it there knowing Seiji likes to read before bed, and I love both scenarios.

Also, it's fucking adorable that as soon as Nick mentions their date appointment, Seiji takes off his glasses and lowers his Kindle because it's got his full attention and investment.

And a quick pitstop to the locker rooms!

I like the visual metaphor here with Aiden and Bobby both very casual about changing and both literally having their shirts open; meanwhile, Seiji's straightening the cuffs on his button-down, which is already neatly tucked in and complete with his tie. It just highlights how Seiji's a lot more closed off than the others, and I think this was a neat trick to remind us of that.

In regards to plot, I'm still...really disappointed in the pacing. I know most people feel like it's a slowburn/it's taken a long time to develop, but if you waited to read Fence at all until it was complete and then read it all in one sitting, I think you'd see how unbalanced it is. Williams says that their first match will be in three weeks back right after tryouts:

which means everything between issue 12 and CHALLENGERS has happened in 3 weeks. Seiji and Nick's relationship is so sweet and cute, but it went from resentful rivalry to puppy love overnight with very little 'screen time' dedicated to the actual transition from resentment to friends (which I could write a whole essay on but this is not the post for that lmfao). Furthermore, the fact that it's the first match of State Championships rather than first match of the season is crazy to me. I'll admit, I didn't fence in high school--it wasn't even an option because we didn't have a team. And despite hours of research, the structure of high school team fencing is not entirely clear to me. However, I do know that typical high school sports go through the season, facing every other team in their division or whatever. Based on performance in those matches, they can qualify for state, and then their win ratio determines their seeding order for the state championships that happen in like 1-2 days. Seeding order is who you go up against in a bracket, so it's what this diagram is, basically:

(side note, but it appears there are 24 schools competing at state). Again, fencing could be different, but it kinda seems to me like we skipped over the season and went right to State Championships, which just cuts out so much development and build-up. It's like we're speed-running the entire story to get to the end faster. We cut out showing the development in the romance, and now we're cutting out the development of the plot. There's still plenty that we can do at state, of course, but imagine how much more it would mean to see Nick fencing in front of Robert if we'd built that up more. I just don't understand how we spent 12 issues on try outs, 4 on a practice match, 8 on camp, and none on the fencing season. It feels so abrupt and unbalanced. Tryouts and camp were my favorites arcs because they felt pretty well-paced as self-contained pieces of the story. I just feel like we needed waaaaay more relationship development between those two arcs to be satisfying, and I feel like there should be waaaaay more build up during the fencing season between camp and State Championships.

and now, the moment you've all been waiting for: my devastation over Eugene's role (???) in the story. I honestly question why he's in the story at all--at this point, it would have made more sense to have him flat-out not make the team. Except that keeping him this long lowkey backs up the theory I've had on his role since Striking Distance/RIVALS: Eugene is here to make everyone else look better/cooler/more impressive. The very first thing that struck me when reading the first look was this:

The dialogue here suggests that only one reserve actually gets to be on the team in the end, and the reserve is Nick. And, worse, everyone expected it to be Nick. Sure, it's sweet that Seiji thinks Nick's the better fencer, but all I can think about is how hard Eugene's worked for ten years trying to make the team as opposed to Nick's three months of fencing. Now, I love an underdog story. But it's interesting because Pacat stated in an interview (I'd have to go find where for the specific quote) that he always feels bad for the person who's been working to be #1 their whole lives only to be knocked out of the running by an upstart underdog--which I've always assumed would influence the path taken in Fence...and it seems like we may well let Seiji and Jesse remain above Nick in skill (or at least it seems like we won't be dethroning Seiji, even if we go for Jesse), but Nick's overcoming smaller obstacles. And those smaller obstacles hurt worse to see crushed because Eugene almost made the team in a way that mattered, only to have that taken away. It would have been less cruel to him and his fans to let Nick take the reserve slot back in issue 12, but instead we brought Eugene along to serve as a means to make Nick out 'secret weapon' and elevate his story.

I will say though, this page is one of my favorite Eugene moments because I see the character I selfishly want Eugene to be in it. From the context of the panels above, this page is likely Williams telling them that only one will be fencing in State Championships, and this is their reaction. Eugene's immediate concern for Nick and the comforting hand on his shoulder followed by a bright smile and a thumbs up--he just cares so much about other people and it so used to smiling through his own pain/disappointment and comforts Nick through being positive (and as seen back in issue 12, up playing his competitiveness) and acting like it's no big deal.

Eugene deserved better, but if this is where he goes out, I think I can live with it. Better to see him go now than continue to be a means to uplift the rest of team by being less than. but, man, I was really hoping we were turning it around after his moment in REDEMPTION being the only KR boy not to lose his bout

“I like learning.”

“I think that’s a really good trait,” she replies. 

Buck has to take a big, steadying breath. He feels dangerously close to something for Shannon. Something he is very much not allowed to feel.

She tells him about work on the drive back to her place. It seems Shannon is almost in exactly the opposite of Buck’s position. If Buck is being kept away from the work he loves because of his stupid leg, Shannon is stuck in a job she hates, despite the discomfort it currently brings her. Typing endlessly isn’t great for her shoulder. Her boss seems to have little empathy for her pregnancy or her shoulder injury. On top of it all, the administrative work means nothing to her. 

“But I am literally not qualified for anything else,” she explains.

Buck understands that well enough. He gets how hard it is with no education .Before the fire academy, he had no real qualifications. Other than mixology school. Which went a long way in applying to bars, but he still realized he was getting hired largely for his looks. 

“What did you want to do?” Buck asks. “Before?”

There’s no need to specify what before means. Before Chris. 2010 B.C. He has his own before, too. Even though it’s way less serious. Before he left home.

Not that they didn’t spend one-on-one time before. They always did. Just since Buck and Eddie started dating, the priority has been doing things as a family. And it still is, to a large degree. 

Chris calling Buck his second dad and Eddie asking Buck if he wanted a second kid changed things, just a little. Buck asked for more time, just them two. 

“If he feels that way about me, I-I don’t want him to think I don’t feel the same way, and if we do have another kid, I don’t want him to think he’s like just my stepson, compared to the new baby, so-”

“Oh my god,” Eddie had interrupted. “You do not need to ask. Do what you want to do, he’ll love it.”

So they’re at the zoo. There’s a special exhibit about bugs. It’s not a travesty that Eddie is home googling men’s ring cuts. 

He thinks he’s settled on the kind of style he’s going to go for - if not the actual ring itself - when the doorbell rings. Eddie isn’t expecting anyone. It wouldn’t be Maddie or Chim, because of the baby. Maybe Bobby? Or Hen? Eddie really doesn’t know.

He closes his laptop, finishes a final sip of coffee, and crosses the house to answer the door.

The last person on earth he’s expecting to see is his father. 

Okay, maybe his mother is a smidge less likely. But still. His father is at the bottom of the list of anticipated visitors, right there with Pedro Pascal and Daniel Craig. 

“Dad?” Eddie’s eyes nearly bulge out of his head. “What the hell are you doing here?”

It comes off a bit harsher than intended. Wait, no. Scratch that. It’s exactly the right level of harshness. What the hell is he doing here?

Ramon looks nervous. His eyes are wide and sort of pleading. His hands are wrung together in front of him like an upside down prayer.

“Eddie!” He exclaims, voice shaky. “Hi.”

“What the hell?” Eddie asks again. 

“I was… Can we talk?” Ramon asks a little weakly. 

“Why didn’t you, I don’t know, call me?” Eddie demands. 

“I didn’t think you’d answer.”

Probably true.

“Why didn’t you leave a damn voicemail? Maybe a text?” Eddie tries.

“I didn’t think you’d return the call.”

Eddie’s lip twitches.

“Please, Edmundo. It’s been two years. I just want to talk.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” Christopher retorts. 

“Uh, it kind of does when you think of it like… Like a broken bone.” Eddie tries.

“A broken bone?” Chris asks. 

“Mhm,” Eddie nods. “Sometimes, you break a bone in a weird way. And in order for it to heal right, the surgeon has to break it again, so they can put it back in the right position.”

“Ew,” Chris wrinkles his nose.

“Yeah,” Eddie admits. 

“Or like having someone cut into my gums to make my mouth eventually feel better?” Chris asks.

“Exactly. Yeah.”

“Okay,” Chris says. He’s quiet again for a while. Eddie still doesn’t turn on the truck. Then… “What bone did you have to rebreak, or whatever?”

Yeah.

Yeah, they were always going to get here sooner or later. Eddie kind of hoped later. Post-surgery. While Buck wasn’t at work and could come by to resuscitate him if he keeled over. 

“A lot of things, really,” Eddie admits. “I think I had a lot of bones heal wrong.”

“That’s kind of sad.”

“Yeah.”

It is kind of sad. Eddie is learning to be sad for himself these days. Not just with himself.

Hi, I read in one of your posts that you "almost have a masters degree in motivating the unwilling" and I just wanna say please. Halp. I'm ruining my life by being the way I am and I can't stop. Everybody talks about my "immense potential" and how it's "such a waste of intelligence" for me to be the way that I am. I'm honestly drowning.

Oh wow. If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me that, I'd be able to afford a life coach for my ownself, lol. I have a pretty significant little alphabet soup of disorders to my name, but I didn't get diagnosed with any of them until my early 30s. What that means is that I had to find ways to compensate for my shitshow of a brain, so I have a lot of tips and tricks. I'm currently working on my doctorate as well, so I'm doing lots of research around mental heath, focusing on teen mental health since I work with teens every day.

First off, you're not ruining your life. You're just living it. Your life isn't something that needs to be put through the wash and purified. It is what it is, and you are who you are. The fact that you're here and breathing and *wanting* to improve are already wonderful things. You're doing okay. ^_^

Next, think about what you want your life to look like. This is a good journalling prompt. There's no wrong way to do this. You can get really specific, right down to the new furniture you'd like to fill your space with; you can have just big picture stuff: "I want to survive high school" or "I want to wake up looking forward to the day." Try to think in positive terms rather than negative. I don't mean "I want to feel happy!" necessarily: but think of things with positive *action*: instead of "I don't want to feel miserable," which is a negative, something you want to subtract from your life, think of a positive: "I want to feel better," "I want to re-connect with an old hobby," "I want to start a diary," things like that. It's easier, sometimes, for our weird monkey brains, if we start off *adding* something new instead of *stopping* something old...even if the "something old" is part of what makes us miserable.

For example, a lot of people want to stop smoking. Quitting cold-turkey is possible, sure, but it's a god-awful experience. Instead of thinking of it as "subtracting" smoking, a better approach would be to ADD something new that can slowly start taking its place. An example in this scenario would be to add in another oral treat you enjoy (I see your mind in the gutter, hello, nice place!) that can take the place of just one smoke a day. A really nice chocolate truffle, or some spicy crunchy chips, or a fancy lollipop. That way, your brain isn't necessarily feeling a *deprivation* or the lack of something it has come to expect, but you're still lowering your daily nicotine consumption.

So that might be the easiest way to start. Look at any habits you might have that don't make you feel good, or that you don't want to carry with you into your future. I don't want to call them "bad habits" because that implies a judgment call, which I am NOT qualified to make about your lived experiences. Obviously, that habit served its purpose for you at some point! But if it's no longer serving you, try to slowly replace it with something that does. Think of it as a shift rather than a removal, and your brain will tolerate the change more easily.

firstly, oh my god. the one you left on sunflower LMAOO i laughed out loud bc i never imagined someone would like my work so much, that they'd contemplate printing it! i'm glad you enjoyed the way i wrote the reader - i wasn't sure how to characterize her at first, but she grew on me so much. i'm honored. hopefully one day i will be able to write longer-length fics with the same depth that i did for this one!

sukuna x kitsune! reader - honestly i just really like kitsune mythology and whenever i think of this i want to stick my fist in my mouth and scream because im like the POTENTIAL. i also really like aus about fantasy historical times (im a diehard historical xianxia cdrama enjoyer. they are terrible. i eat every single one of them up.) will also deal with dark themes, considering the status of the world/women during those times.

i do have a tentative x oc in the works - vampire hunter! character x vampire. not sure abt the pairing, but it's bnha. i can tell you that this will be an au, like i take liberties with the entire universe and rewrite it style, with an entirely new plot set after the entire anime. (afo wins. i think.) this will hopefully be a chaptered work, which also means it will take me a significant amount of time to write. i like to have a clear vision + most chapters prewritten for anything longer than a one shot before i post bc all of my past projects have been abandoned lol. theyre getting reworked into some of these fics tho!

finally, onto this ask: i actually showed your message to my parents after squealing over it lol thank you. i'm honored you liked my fic so much that you shared it with your loved ones. i am also glad that your head will be filled with this - that's exactly how i felt writing it! nothing else. just ideas bouncing around the rest of my horrifically empty head.

you also mentioned being taught by me how to write twice - i don't think i'm qualified for a teacher. i'm not even an english major :^). i just enjoyed english classes in hs, and write in my spare time. (im actually studying computer engineering and my friends think its really funny bc like lol an engineer?? a coder?? who writes?? i am simply Special)

however, i think i can say this! write for yourself, write whatever you want to write. my first works were published on wattpad back when i was 13. that account has since been deleted, and i cringe really hard when i think back to that time, but i think that without it, without the love that those few interactions gave me, and towards my confidence to post, my writing would not be at all what it is today. it doesn't matter if what you write is bad, or not at all on par with what you'd like - writing, to me, is a journey that you build up every step of the way. you will improve in anything if you pour enough love into it, i think.

( ok unrelated interlude sorry i feel like a wizened sage i should really take my own advice and focus up on school LOL. sorry if this is also like,, condescending at all?? in any way?? i promise i don't mean it in that way )

with regards on how specifically to improve at writing: idk, i'm not that much of an established writer myself. i'm definitely not as good compared to some authors whose works i've read, though i'd like to get someday! firstly, i think reading anything you can is important. the books i usually read are of the fantasy/action/romance types, and i am a serial reader of fanfiction myself. read as much as you can, whatever you'd like. note the authors that say something that sticks with you, cut up the emotions of their characters into a million pieces, hold them within your heart. i am the writer i am today, only because of the thousands of authors who came before me, because i carry snippets of them that i admired, i thought were particularly amazing, and tried to make it into my own. i think i said this in a response to someone else: it's amazing to see how different authors interpret a character and make it into their own, taking little snippets from a fandom, tweaking it just a bit to add their own.

read for your own enjoyment, write for your own enjoyment, practice with a drabble a day or anytime, anything that you want. love the process and every step of it. be like me, and think of a comment at 11pm while watching your cdramas because one reader told asked you if you really liked to make them suffer. think of a concept because you tell them that you'd like to write fluff one day, and fixate on this so strongly that you think of nothing else for a full 48 hours, even when you are sleeping, so much that you wake up, have an idea click together, hop over to your laptop at 8am in the morning on 5 hours of sleep after you sleep at 3 (because you're grinding) and start the grind anew. or, ruminate on your ideas! let them sit, let them simmer, plan it out as slowly as you'd like. it can take you months, years - lord knows. i have a concept i've been sitting on for the better part of minimum five years? i say this, because once an idea clicks for me, the flow of it feels natural. i grin whenever i think of something really stupid to put in, a sentence that feels just perfect, a reference that 90% of my readers will probably miss.

when i decided to start this blog, it was because i was like: it'd be really cool if i went viral! and also because i wanted to share my work, to motivate myself into writing. i write because i am delighted when anyone chooses to interact with my posts, to like my writing. but i also write - and i think this is really important - solely for myself. yes, it's astounding to see the numbers go up, and i've honestly obsessed over the notifications for like hours now im ngl. but i write works for me, in a way that i know i will love; that will have me rereading over and over going oh my god i love ME. i write for those moments i will read back upon and grin quietly to myself at my own self-supposed literary genius.

tl;dr, write for yourself, and write something you know you will love.

about metatron: i think the main associations are, at least islamically the link between the prophet ezra/uzair (the different names are the anglicised and arabic spellings :)) like you mentioned and metatron being the angel of the veil. there's definitely a lot more discussion in jewish literature but i am not even a little bit qualified to talk about that :( further reading for the both of us i think! in terms of GO i doubt the prophet links will be explored - potentially the idea that the prophet ezra and therefore metatron? has been historically viewed as the son of God? however from what i know of islam and can tell from judaism that theory is pretty universally denied because of the absolute divinity of God (has no partners, no children etc etc)

the book of life! yes so we have uh a version of the angel/devil on your shoulder except we believe they're two angels who don't influence you but just write down all your good and bad deeds - these are compiled on the day of judgement and given to you in the right/left hand depending on your final judgement. not sure about any scratching out though! once you're judged, its heaven or hell and your earthly deeds are no longer needed. oh, and as far as i know, only humans have a book of deeds.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

So many things. After all the research I did for the A&E fic I was like "I am basically a medical professional" and all my friends that ACTUALLY work in health care were like "lol you are barely qualified to hand out bandaids" and I was like... "well I guess you're right." My google searches while working on that one were WILD I kept getting popups from Google with crisis management hotlines telling me I wasn't alone 😭 The DUMBEST thing I learned while researching a fic was for the Infection Verse Christmas Fic, and that was when I learned that Belgium is only a 2 hour train ride from London which sparked an entire debate in my friend group about how when we all went to the UK last year, and I was suckered into going back to Paris (my least favorite city) for the night, I could have gone to Belgium and had a BELGIUM WAFFLE IN BELGIUM for a shorter train ride. Don't worry though, I've made such a big deal about it that I'm going to get my waffle when I go back this summer 😎 The things we learn while researching fic lol

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?

Another line I really liked is from the Infection Fic Verse Christmas Fic - It's Christmas (So This is Gonna Be a Nightmare) It gave me Pete Wentz vibes personally, and it might seem pretentious and ridiculous to the reader but WOW did it make me go hell yeah this is ridiculous and I love it: Despite how fucking happy he was, he also couldn’t recall a time when he had been more paranoid that one wrong move could send the fragile house of cards that was his life crumbling down around him like waves against the shore beating down a sandcastle.

24. Share a moodboard for (one of) your current WIP(s).

Oh god, okay SO I've never made a moodboard before BUT I have just attempted to throw one together for my upcoming Equestrian AU - all of the pictures came from Pintrest I apologize if this is horrific my Equestrian AU is my self indulgent baby at the moment which is why it is the fic that gets the mood board lol I also have no idea if I even did this right because I've never made one before...

The Magnus Archives SCP AU

This has been in my drafts for over two years. There was a point where this au was not buzzing around in my mind and I lived in blissful peace. but the circle of stupidity is complete so woe tma scp au upon ye.

(As a disclaimer: I am more of a casual fan of SCP so sorry for any like,, stuff that seems out of wack in regards to SCP lore. Also I recently watched a video on the Ouroboros cycle so I’m drawing a lot of inspo from it. This is just a cleaned up version of rambling I did at 12am on Discord so. If stuff seems to jump around that’s why lmao) (Future aside: fun fact I only just read the entirety of the Ouroboros cycle this past year lmao)

Elias is O5-1, “The Founder”, and is, himself, an anomaly since he also does the body hopping stuff like canon. As an O5 member, no one can really do anything about it.

Gertrude was the previous Site Director of Site-14 (I just chose this number bc it’s the only number i can think of tied to TMA (14 fears) and I don’t know enough about SCP to know if it’s a significant site in any prominent SCP lore so if it is. oops.) and, alongside her site director duties, she was working with the Global Occult Coalition looking into the possible SCP status of some of the O5s but surprise, surprise, her post is found covered in her blood so she’s declared dead (despite no body ever being found). At this discovery, one Jonathan Sims is appointed as the new site director of Site-14, despite most likely not being the most qualified for the job, but O5-1 said so and you can’t really argue with the O5 council...

Site-14 probably specializes in reality benders and Euclid entities. Including SCP-[redacted] “Web Table”, SCP-[redacted] “Orsinov’s Doll”, and a couple artifacts connected to The Church of the Broken God. (Future aside: I have since changed SIte-14 to be more of an archival site that also happens to have some spill over safe class anomalies & a couple cooperative type greens (read: Khro likes some avatars and wants them kicking around the SIte). Oh also I have actual numbers for anomalies now but. Don’t feel like putting them here)

Sasha is the lead researcher on “Web Table” and most likely specializes in cases related to [GOI that’s the equivalent to The Web] and Dr. Wondertainment (by extension probably The Factory as well). I chose these bc of Sasha’s connection to the web table in canon and, since she’s literally researching it in this AU, it just makes sense if she were already knowledgeable of these groups when she was placed as head researcher (though it wouldn’t be surprising if O5-1 put her on the case with 0 knowledge just to have some Fun). (Future aside: I forgot entirely that I did this with Sasha. Her role is slightly different now. But this is interesting so I’ll let it float around here)

Tim specializes mostly in things related to Herman Fuller’s Circus of the Disquieting (which for this AU just. consumed The Circus of the Other. Either they’re one in the same or they work together but all of Orsinov’s troupe is being shoved into this GOI) (Future aside: I know nothing about this GOI still so any writing I do about it is probably just gonna make it The Circus of the Other lmao). Tim may be lead researcher on “Orsinov’s Doll” (who is Nikola) or Nikola may still be out and about with the circus. Tim is the newest member of everyone to the entire foundation, having only been recruited in 2012 at the earliest. So it probably doesn’t make sense for him to already be a lead researcher on something with so little experience with the Foundation as a whole but... let’s just say O5-1 is having Fun. (Future aside: Tim is not the newest recruit anymore. That’s all you’re getting out of me for now)

Martin specializes in anomalies connected to The Church of the Broken God (since I see TCotBG as being something like what a cult/group connected to The Extinction would be like) and he researches and tracks what the church is doing and such. I’m still not entirely sure why he would be recruited by the Foundation if his canon backstory is kept more or less the same

makiden - A+: OTP.

makiden is so good. prime badtouch material. but the way that they're more than that? part 1 of chainsaw man is nothing short of a plea for empathy, and that for all her flaws, for all her mistakes, for all her horrible acts, it doesn't ask for makima to be forgiven, but for her to be understood--it drives me insane. she never really saw denji, and he was a means to an end for her, but he still loved her. like, ugh, they're really hard to talk coherently and eloquently about because makima is absolutely an abuser and denji her victim, but makima is also a victim. csm doesn't intend to absolve her; it asks that you understand that she is another step in the cycle of abuse.

makiden is the meat and potatoes of csm part 1. incredibly sexy on every level, but also so narratively and thematically compelling. i really can't say enough about how much i love them. it's really hard for me to talk about why they do so much for me without going into a long ramble about why i also love part 1 of csm so damn much. makiden as a relationship is utterly vital to it.

asaden - A+: OTP.

i swear i have denji ships that i wouldn't qualify as otps! (the other one that hits that tier is akiden. u_u) but, god, what a fucking life i am living. this went from a borderline crack ship to having actual canon potential. initially, i was pretty invested in it from the angle of self-hating moronsexual mitaka (it works for asayoru, too! just act stupid, and mitaka will be cursing how horny she is seeing you fail to solve basic math makes her), then oh my god...oh my god, they went on an actual canon date. and mitaka was convinced infodumping all the research she binged the night before at denji would make him hot and bothered for her, and she's legit so charmed at him being a good guy (HE WANTS NAYUTA TO GO TO COLLEGE). i'm doomed. i'm absolutely doomed. i'm deluded enough at this point to have true canon aspirations for asaden and feeling a salty victory at some annoying yshdn shippers i've seen think it stood a chance at being canon when yshd still barely has a character.

thanks for bullying me with just a bunch of my otps because i love too many things and stick the otp label on them. but, boy, this snuck up on me with lobcorp. the ending absolutely makes lobcorp, elevates it to a level of brilliance imo. angela spends the entire game, spends hundreds of years, operating on ayin's script (and i'm very curious to what extent that included, to what minutiae her words were dictated by him. did he set things so specifically that she decided to always introduce herself as such a Special and Advanced AI to him lmao?) until she finally has free will in her grasp and crushes the culmination of his and everyone's suffering to exercise it. it's just so fucking good. spending so much time simmering in hate and bitterness for this man while being made to assist him again and again and again.

and ayin, buddy...friend...fella...you literally just made your crush as an ai but with bigger tits after she died. if that isn't romantic, i don't know what is. but, seriously, the fact he was so heartbroken at carmen's "death" (because she did live on in a fucked up way as the heart of this literal purgatory) only to immediately reject angela because oh...well...he wanted carmen back, but this isn't carmen. angela was made as a replacement that could never fulfill her purpose, and yet ayin kept her so close for so long.

it's deeply fucked up, and it makes me insane. thanks for giving angela daddy issues, ayin. at least let her choke you a few times as compensation!

benjamin/ayin - B: It’s really cute.

benjamin is the funniest motherfucker in lobotomy corporation. even more than ayin himself. i am absolutely desperate to know the hard timeline for how the hell the timey-wimey shit works out for where he always appears as "benjamin" before being shoved in a robot to reappear as hokma. because, man, getting shoved in a toaster sure does something to the guy! like, ayin, let's just be here together in robot purgatory because no one needs to die and we can be husbands and forget carmen like i can put on a wig if you need me too it's fine seriously i don't mind just please god stay with me forever. 💗💗💗

hod/yesod - A+: OTP.

I MADE THIS SHIT UP. I FUCKING TRICKED MYSELF INTO THIS. THEY BARELY INTERACT, but like, one day, i was like oh boy i like hod but what if she Could Make Someone Worse? i went down the list, and malkuth? nah, too strong of a personality versus hod. netzach? it'd be sort of mutual self-worsening between those two. it'd be a whole essay on its own about why it didn't fulfill what i was looking for, but i have Thoughts, i swear. hod/binah? oh, no one can out worse binah. hod/angela? pretty similar to hod/binah.

but. oh. hod/yesod? there's this distinct point of connection for them in their mutual anxieties as a point of exploitation. hod wants to be helpful, wants to be needed, and yesod is someone that holds himself together tightly until he isn't. a little undoing, and oh, wow, he really needs hod's assistance, doesn't he? maybe it's a little nudge from angela (it gets boring repeating shit, okay) or hod herself just Noticing, but hod is not above setting someone else up to be at just the level of functioning where they often fall apart and need to rely on her to get by. yesod is the king of options for hod making someone worse and being the dominant partner. he might have the stronger personality, but he isn't without some degree of humanity, and hod can slowly worm her way in there.

this is sheer nonsense based on me huffing whatever the fuck this ship is. yesod just needs to be a little desperately vulnerable, and hod would be such a good helper! everyone wins! ^_^

binah/hod - B: It’s really cute.

okay, to an extent with binah ships, my brain just empties out and goes oh wow big sexy. i like how casually manipulative and in control binah is (or seems) in every situation. hod is super cute and desperate for validation. let her snap a little, and you'd have a real great violence breakdown girl with some manipulative reassurance. gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss, binah. you're so valid.

16. What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

I would love to read a like, modern or canon magic realism Jim-centric OFMD fic. Like I would LOVE it. (Your mer Jim fic kind of fills this niche for me right now tbh, in the absence of other fics!) Magic realism is a genre that I adore, but don't always feel qualified to write - but god it would be so good. Jim with magic, or Jim without magic in a world where magic runs wild. I don't have any thoughts other than "this would be an au type that I would kill to read" XD (My most favourite fic of this genre is a Dark Knight Rises fic by Pagination called Collapse The Box. It's absolutely bananas good. If you like batman fics I highly recommend it.) (An OFMD one that also gets a little close to the type of magic realism I'd love is the House of Leaves AU. It's so good and so scary!! But not super Jim focused which is okay because it's so good)

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

Oh my god, there are SO many XD Right now I am lucky in that some of my pals enjoy my OFMD rarepair (Ed/Jim my beloved), because tbh most of my highly specific AU's feel like I'm writing for me and like 3 other people haha! The Remington Steele AU especially feels like this - it's a really niche idea, taken sideways from the source AU material and turned dark. It's very fun though. As for other ones - hmm. This kind of fits with the last answer too, but there's this book series I enjoy (the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews), and the urban fantasy setting in it is so neat. It's based on the idea that the world fluctuates between "magic" and "tech" and the two don't work together - so your cars die when the magic is up, and your spells fail when tech is up. I would also kill to read an AU of that. I will never write it, because it would take a lot more research than I'd be willing to do. And it's remarkably specific, and I feel like I will never ever find a fic written in that setting. But I would love to read it!!

9-1-1 s06e1 I am so late, but here is episode 1.

The title sounds very ominous, but let's go.

I have to admit that I knew what the emergency was going to be before I started the episode. I think the emergency itself was kind of underwhelming, but the thing with the girl was very impactful, and that is what I think made it tensive and, of course, the last-minute jump from Eddie. I love the Buddie teamwork. How did Buck know it was 3 feet, and how does Bobby know what 3 feet are from down there? Awesome Athena, and I love her teamwork with Maddie. Also, Buck just genuinely wants an answer, and Hen is only concerned with the fact that they don't have to be concerned about it. I just know that Buck is gonna research it. Aww, bathena, coming down from an emergency with some banter. Honeymoon??!! Excuse me, Bobby, say that again. I am very happy, but omg.

Love the banter between the team and Lucy, wasn't sure if she going to be in this season, but I don't mind that she is. Kind off excited actually, because she is great, just not as a love interest. Not immediately, Buck's insecurities popping up. The hurt in his eyes, and Bobby doesn't get it, and ouch. 

Buckley-Diaz family dinner, whoop. I love that instead of bottling it up, Buck tells Eddie while he is cooking dinner for his boys. Also, Chris piping up with the couch thing was savage, and I love it. And they are using the couch as a metaphor for Buck's partners. The eye contact. 

Jee is so big, aww. They are close, aren't they? Sleepover, maybe, huh? Told ya. 

That was not what I was expecting, love it, even though the man is dying now. Buck, baby, no. Please no. I love you, but no. Eddie's face, haha. So exasperated, he knows exactly what Buck is doing, and Bobby's confused face, haha. Why is Josh always spot on with the advice, and the teasing, like yeah.

Mayyy. Yesss, May. Crossover (Magnum Pi watcher here). Bobby is such a dad. I'll bet your ass there is going to be an emergency on the cruise. Friendship goals. Maddiee, let's go. Yesssss. Stupid Chim, dammit. Eddie admitting that it was not about Chris means so much. It makes me so happy. They made up, thank god. 

She is mad, run Buck. Oh no, Buckk. Bobby, you only realise now. I am so happy for Hen.  I have tears in my eyes because of the devastation on Buck's face. I love that he was immediately happy for Hen but still hurt. I do disagree with Bobby on the reason why because I don't think that the thing Buck needs is more life experience, I think he has got it, but Buck is not confident in his role on the team but also in his life to get over that he doesn't need life experience but just time and someone to talk things through with and to realise he is loved. To be fair, Eddie would make a better captain than Buck at this point, I don't think he will want it, and I think he is not in the right space for it right now, but Eddie is so confident in his abilities in the field, he doubts everything else but if he is in the field he won't, he will afterwards, also Eddie has nerves of steel. But to be fair I think that every single one of them deserves it, but I think for right now, Hen is the absolute best choice and what happens down the line comes then, but they will be all qualified then, especially after watching Bobby lead.

Adorable Chris and Eddie moment, but omg Buck just lifting that chair. Most of the time those things are heavy. Oh no, I was excited for them to go on their trip. I hope they are still gonna go. That sounds so mean, but they need a vacation.

Standing up to her twin brother was probably one of the most difficult things Kamaria had ever done, but she knew it needed to happen. A few weeks went by without contact and while it made her sad, she knew it was for the best. She hoped he’d come around soon, especially since she was launching a mayoral campaign. Kamaria had worked for the mayor’s office her entire professional career, and figured it was time she ran. Things weren’t perfect in Sim City, she didn’t expect them to be. But having a queer child meant that she needed to be more involved in how her city ran. 

Amar was completely supportive of Kamaria’s bid for mayor, even taking on the role of campaign manager. It was hard juggling running his car shop with managing the campaign, but he knew Kamaria was the right choice for the city, and wanted to do everything he could to help. The two rented out a tiny office in midtown to run the campaign from and spent what felt like weeks on end in the office, making calls, raising money, and getting out the vote.

“I took a poli-sci class freshman year,” David said in his impromptu interview with his aunt. “I feel like that qualifies me to intern with you, Auntie K.” “I’ve been rewatching Scandal, so I could do some opposition research and blackmail people if you want,” Ollie chimed in.

Kamaria rubbed her temples and looked around; her operation was pretty bleak and they needed as many people on the team as they could get. “Fine, you’re hired,” Kamaria said. “You can sit over there and start making calls. And don’t mess this up, or I’ll tell your parents.”

Ollie nodded and sat at the plastic table at the far end of the office. He grabbed a phone and looked at the call log, readying himself to work for the day. When he looked up, he noticed David hadn’t taken a seat yet. “C’mon, man, let’s get this done,” Ollie said. “I think I’ll take a seat on that side of the office,” said David, eyeing a gorgeous redhead across the way. “Dude, sit your ass down,” Ollie said.

“Ooooooohh, you said ‘ass’,” Shea whispered, looking up from the book she was reading in the corner. “Shut up, pipsqueak,” David said. “Or I’ll tell your mom that you said ‘ass’ first.” “You wouldn’t!” Shea said, standing up and puffing out her chest. “Ok, calm down Rambo,” David said.

David groaned as he looked at the giant stack of call logs and phone books on the table in front of him. “Dude, this is a lot of work,” David said. “We have to call all these people?” “Did you think working on a political campaign would be fun?” Ollie asked. “Yeah, kinda,” David said with a shrug. He looked over his shoulder, eyeing the girl across the office. “Don’t do it, man.” “I’m gonna just get something from the vending machine,” David said, clambering to his feet. “BRB.”

“This seat taken?” David asked, taking the seat across from the redhead. “Yes, actually,” she said. “Oh,” said David. “Well, doesn’t look like they’re here just now, so maybe I’ll just pop a squat for a sec. I’m David. Kamaria’s my aunt, you know.”

“Oh great, another stuck up Zarro,” the redhead said. “What?” David asked. “You’re working for a Zarro.” “Yeah, cus Mayor Becker is a major douchebag,” she said. “I’d take stuck-up over douchebag any day.” “Well, I’m sure you’ll find that Auntie K is far from stuck up,” said David. “And so am I. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, ya know? Well, I’m adopted, but the point still stands.” “Ugh,” she said, standing up and walking away.

David followed her over to the vending machines. “I bet I could get you a snack for free,” David said. “I’ve got a hook up.” “Can you leave me the hell alone!?” the redhead said. “God, I’m just trying to get school credit, not be harassed by some creep all day.” David hung his head and nodded sheepishly, finally backing off.

“Dad, how much longer do we have to be here?” Shea asked her dad. “I finished my book twice already.” “Not much longer, kiddo,” Amar said. “Why don’t you help out your cousins, they’re making some phone calls over there. That could be fun.” “When has talking on the phone ever been fun?” Shea asked. “Touche,” said Amar.

“It’s ok if you want to take her home, honey,” Kamaria said, her eyes glued to her computer screen. “I could drop her off at your mom’s and come back,” Amar offered.  “It’s ok, I don’t want our little dreadhead to be cranky for school in the morning,” Kamaria said. “Plus, I’ve got David and Ollie here now, they can help.” “I bet they’ll spend more time being annoying than helping,” Shea said.

“Ok, let’s pack it up, kid,” Amar said as he stood up. Kamaria was still glued to her screen, reading numbers in one window while writing speeches in another. Amar looked down at her and smiled; he loved her so much. “I’m proud of you, baby,” he said, kissing the top of her head. “We’re gonna win this thing. I know it.”

Name: Mechakoopa

Debut: Super Mario World

So a very polite anon has humbly requested we write a post about Mechakoopa! They are apparently this person's favorite, so today's their lucky day! See I don't like to brag but, I'd definitely consider myself as part of the top 100 most qualified people to talk about Mechakoopas in the world! And who am I to turn down such a request?

Now the 90s you see, were a turning point for good Mr. Bowser here. With a brand new clown-helicopter thing to pilot around you might think he's all set, but what kind of self-respecting villain would he be without filling his evil lair with a number of Evil Wind-up Toys based on himself? So he does exactly that- a whole fourteen years before Mario stole his idea, mind you!

Yes, you read that right! Despite their name, Mechakoopas are tiny mechanical versions of Big Bowser himself, not just any run of the mill Koopa, which explains their green heads and funky hair! You know how Koopa is actually Bowser's Japanese name? Yeah! They could've localized them as Mecha-Bowsers, but Mechakoopa just flows nicer doesn't it? And he is still technically a Koopa!

"Yo, somebody rang?"

No!! Not you, Mecha-Bowser from Super Mario Sunshine (2002)!! You'll get your turn eventually! Geez! Anyway. Where was I. Oh! Yes!

This is the obligatory part of the post where I'm like “Get a load of this funky guy”! Get a load of this funky guy! Instead of reinterpreting Bowser’s design very literally in toy form, the Mechakoopa is very much its own beast, with its funny beak and little funny legs. Our aforementioned anon mentioned the wind-up key, and oh, what a wind-up key it is! And of course the raisin d’eclair- the fantastic little googly eyes! Oh where would we be without those googly eyes?

Naturally though, Bowser doesn’t just use his toys to populate his spooky castle- he always has to keep a few on his person! So he chucks them at you in the game’s final boss fight, but he didn’t account for the fact that, in this game only, Mario can throw upwards! Oh no! His one weakness! Being pelted with plastic!

By the by, I’ve always thought the original Mechakoopa sprite from Super Mario World looked super funky! The hair almost looks like its on fire! And I like the goofy grin. 

The Super Mario World cartoon decided to interpret this sprite by turning him into a horrible little man. No, I don’t want this! He shouldn’t have arms!

The Mechakoopa’s next appearance in a mainline Mario platformer was in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where they act... exactly the same as they do in Super Mario World! Cool! This basically established them as modern Mario enemies, but there isn’t much to say other than that!

Like all our posts about Common Mario Enemies, it would probably be boring if I just listed off their every appearance, so I will just bring up the ones that are worth mentioning. For example, Super Mario RPG! In this game, Bowser’s strongest special attack is Bowser Crush, which summons a giant Mechakoopa to stop on foes! According to the Player’s Guide, this Mechakoopa was a top secret weapon developed by Koopa researchers... to stomp flowers and scare butterflies! Wow! That is so so evil! These big guys would definitely live up to the name “Mecha-Bowser”! 

“Hey guys, are you talking about me?”

NO, we are NOT talking about you, Mecha Bowser (with no hyphen) from Mario Kart: Double Dash (2003)’s Bowser’s Castle course! Get the heck outta here! Gosh, some people just don’t know when they’re not wanted!

I am sure after all this you are wondering, they may be mechanical toys but can they do math? The answer is yes obviously! This is Mechakoopa from Mario Party Advance, and they’re a mathematician! They invented Mechakoopa’s Theorem, the very real mathematical theorem that we all used in school! Everyone give them a round of applause!

I’d like to bring up their appearances in the Mario & Luigi games, not because it’s particularly notable, but because of how much I like their sprite and idle animation! Look at the wind-up key spin around and the eyes go up and down! So cute! Oh, and also because in the Superstar Saga remake they replaced the Mecha-Chomp enemies (may god rest their souls)!

Super Mario Maker 2′s final update was an epic win and a #1 victory royale for Mechakoopa fans anywhere, since it not only added Mechakoopas to all four main game themes, but also two brand new variants: the Blasta Mechakoopa (in red) and the Zappa Mechakoopa (in blue)! 

As you might expect, they can Blast (missiles) and Zap (lasers) respectively! I’ve no idea why they added these random functionalities to Mechakoopas specifically, but they’re a lot of fun and some of the most unique projectiles in the game! Zappa? I barely know ‘a! 

Oh, and I almost forgot! They are in Super Smash Bros. as well! Bowser Jr.’s moveset is a treasure trove of little references to Mario gadgets, and even though Bowser no longer tosses these guys from his Clown Car, his son has taken up the job! Only in this game, Mechakoopas explode. Uh oh! They didn’t do that before! Still, I really like popping a Mechakoopa out of its Mechakoopa Compartment just to see it wander around the stage. It’s fun!

Now that’s all I have to say about good old Mechakoopas, but I’d like to give a special shoutout to this guy in particular- the Micro Mecha-Bowser, from Super Mario Galaxy! For a long time, I assumed they were just Mechakoopas with a different design... But this definitely looks like a beefed up version of the Mechakoopa, with their big goofy teeth, their pig nose and their funky cross-hair eyes! These dudes can breathe fire too, so they really are more like Bowser! And if there’s a Micro Mecha-Bowser, there’s gotta be a normal one!

“Whassup? I heard somebody call my name!”

Harumph! Nobody called you, Mecha-Bowser from Super Mario Galaxy (2007)’s Toy Time Ga- Er... hold on a second. You actually are exactly the person I was talking about after all! My mistake! Though I do wish you’d at least give us a heads up when you’re gonna show up, given you’re the size of a small planetoid!

Yeah, the Micro Mecha-Bowsers are named after this big robot from Toy Time Galaxy, Mecha-Bowser (not to be confused with Mecha-Bowser or Mecha Bowser)! Though I have to say, there isn’t much family resemblance! He’s so blue and un-turtle like! Still, this must’ve been my favorite mission in Galaxy as a kid- I’d replay it over and over again just because the idea of climbing on a giant planet-sized robot and dismantling it piece by piece was so cool! It was like Shadow of the Colossus before I knew what the heck that was!

Well that’s about the extent of the Mechakoopa family. Isn’t it fun? There’s a moral to be learned here, and it’s that, uh... little wind-up toys are very charming! Um, I suppose. Look, writing conclusions is hard!
