💡Astarion, once was a big-hit lawyer and disappeared for a decade, re-emerges as one of the left hand for a big name in politic circles. Rumor is this politician used a few trusted of his people to 'house' an important experimental cyberwear to later be taken back and improved…
💡Wyll, son of Mayor Ravengard. While father wishes for him to continue down the politics, Wyll thinks it's more of a direct help to jump down on the streets directly, thus becoming an Edgerunner. Rumor has it he had dealings with people within Militech that granted him techs
💡Shadowheart, One of Arasaka's top agent. Her, being under Arasaka's teachings and guidance has little to none care for her selfish needs--that is until she was disconnected from their mainframe. Tasting the freedom and truth of her past, SH wanted to uncover all of it

like once a month i have to take a minute to appreciate that from the 1950s to the 2010s when we wanted data storage the collective solution was "eh throw some rust at it." i'm serious. half a century.
these are data tapes, essentially rust on a ribbon, and were used in huge mainframes:
Tumblr media
this is rust on a circle, kept in a protective sleeve. they got smaller over time but all use iron oxide particles just like the tapes above:
Tumblr media
this is also rust on a circle, but kept more secure inside a metal box so that it can be protected and kept ultra-clean:
Tumblr media
...those metal boxes got pretty small. small enough to fit inside one of these:

Smuggled Goods
Tim and Bruce has a deal they frequently make, especially when Alfred is not around.
When Tim became more a frequent face in the manor, he started sleeping on the guest room and also get up and make himself respectable in the next 5 hours. But he is a child that needs 8 hours of sleep so in the morning, and he was already looking like a sickly victorian child and he doesn't want look like worst than that.
Caffeine is a solution in that problem but Alfred forbid Tim to have coffee as it can be detrimental to the growth of Tim. Tim appreciate the sentiment but he needs something to wake his soul up.
That is where Bruce comes in.
Bruce is an adult that Alfred makes at least three cups of coffee every day and Tim can't have a half a cup!
But with Tim's 54 slides of PowerPoint Presentation and also maybe a little gaslighting, he strike a deal with Bruce.
So every morning, Bruce lets Tim to sipped from his mug when Tim wants to. Bruce might get a unpleasant glare from Alfred but Bruce is still drowsy enough that he doesn't notice the glare.
And it's been like that since Tim was Robin. And now that he is somewhat an "adult", Alfred already be giving him a mug of coffee, but the deal has become a habit.
Bruce doesn't mind it when Tim just suddenly swooped in to sipped in his mug as long as Tim doesn't take his coffee.
Tim already finished his coffee and he stride to Bruce that was on the mainframe computer to type everyone's report. Bruce was sipping his coffee when Tim grabbed Bruce's write to guide the coffee to his mouth.
"Why this coffee taste like chocolate?" Tim said as he sipped the coffee
"Tim, it is chocolate." Bruce said, "Go to sleep."
"Hmm.." Tim just hummed, the coffee is really not doing it's job on making him awake and he needs to be awake, he rested his head to Bruce's shoulder to closed his eyes for a minute and maybe he will be awake after five minutes of closing his eyes.
He didn't open his eyes after five minutes, he already fall asleep standing while resting his had on Bruce's shoulder.

Solarpunk Game Ideas: (Action) Platformers & Metroidvanias
Tumblr media
Let me talk about my absolute favorite genre of games. I love action platformers and especially I love Metroidvanias, that most of the time come along in the form of action platformers. (No, this is not the blog to discuss on whether or not a metroidvania needs to be a platformer or not.)
My own Solarpunk dream game would be a metroidvania, to be sure, though I sadly am just not capable of developing it on my own. (If you wanna help: just contact me - I would love to get a small team together for it.)
But let's go over this.
The Issue
The main issue with action platformers/metroidvanias in terms of Solarpunk is, that again, a lot of people struggle with thinking of conflicts for Solarpunk - especially conflicts that would create some sort of violence. Because action platformers almost necessarily need some sort of violence. After all it is usually about shooting or stabbing or at least jumping onto enemies of some sort.
So, how do we do that? Well, I have three ideas to offer. Mind you, my own little idea for the game I would want to make is not among those. :P
Idea #1: The Rogue AI
So, a simple idea that would work rather well in any sort of futuristic Solarpunk setting is simply a rogue AI. Imagine this: We have the Solarpunk utopia. But to archive this, we had at some point needed AI. Be it to fix the planet, or be it for certain work, or maybe AI had been used in bringing down the former capitalist system. Or heck, maybe the former capitalist system was run by an AI, that by now has been shut down.
Either way: The AI goes rogue, and it turns against humans. Maybe not worldwide (we are still on the entire action platformer thing, where usually the area is a smaller area like a big building or maybe a village/town), but maybe it starts up in a building complex or a city where the AI is kept. Something like that.
But it will start to control all sorts of robots, that then attack the humans. Maybe there are also some humansthat get possessed by the AI in some way.
And the main character is trying to get to the mainframe to shut down the AI once and for all. So the enemies fought are robots and maybe controlled humans. Simple.
Idea #2: Nature's Revenge
Another basic idea that can well work with Solarpunk ideas is one that works more on the basis of fantasy. Once more the reminder: Solarpunk can have fantasy themes. Nothing about the genre says that it has to be pure non-fantastic fantasy, and I will still argue that solarpunk does not even need to be scifi.
But to keep with the scifi optics we can still go for a futuristic world for this one. Again: We have set up the Solarpunk future, we try to fix nature, but we are not quite there yet. Because fixing nature after all the destruction is not that easy. And as nature starts to regenerate, something in it awakes. Some sort of nature spirits. And they are angry about everything humanity has done to nature. They do not care that humanity is trying to correct for this. Think something along the lines of Princess Mononoke or Nausicaä.
The protagonist is someone who is trying to protect the humans in the place where the spirits showed up. And they are forced to fight the spirit. This could also be an interesting basis for maybe being allowed to find way to then dispatch bosses non-lethally and find a solution to the conflict that does not involve destroying the spirits. Some creativity would be cool! Especially given platformers rarely offer alternatives to violence.
Idea #3: Capitalism vs Solarpunk
For the last idea, let's please remember that Solarpunk does not need to be set in a world where utopia was fully reached. In this idea we will either have a world where some parts of the world life under Solarpunk - or even the full world. But here is the thing: Just like some people want the monarchies back and wish back slavery and shit, even in this Solarpunk world there are some people who believe that they were better of under Capitalism. Because usually people idealize the past and believe they would have been among the top 5% in any other time - rather than among the exploited class. And those people try for a coup.
Maybe with guns, or - we are scifi after all - with some sort of robots or mechas. But either way, they try to grab control over some important city or piece of infrastructure. And the protagonist is of course forced to find a way to fight against them and prevent the takeover in some way.
Those are just some little ideas with how to deal with the setting and the genre. And maybe... Well, maybe I was able to inspire someone!
And if you are interested in creative Solarpunk endeavors, I would love to invite you into the Solarpunk Creatives community! :)

Eklesia System Update: 2/7/2025
Anyway I thought I could update everyone on what's been goin' on with us.
We've had our work hours cut severely and have been a bit depressed because of it. And feeling unmotivated on the whole. We've also been having some trouble with one of our persecutors, who has been getting irrationally angry every time we set foot on Tumblr. He's doing better now.
Our brain has crafted a creative solution for our lack of motivation in the form of Alden, who was formed to hold our self-destructive tendencies and lack of desire to do anything. Unfortunately he has become our primary host so that backfired a bit. I am happy to report that Alden is getting help in headspace and feeling a lot better on the whole.
I myself have been a tad depressed and holding off on re-splitting Kass from myself to handle it. But I finally did split him to handle the depression and I'm feeling a lot more capable now myself.
Our switching has... also been off lately. Very "sticky" and taking longer than usual. Switch rotor was gunked up again. These things happen I reckon. We're tidying the switch room and mechanism today. It has a habit of getting messy in there.
That reminds me, I wanna make posts some time detailing exactly how our headspace functions. I think it would be fun to try to explain terms we use like "Mainframe Operator" and "Switch Rotor".
In other news, it's been a struggle trying to get up the nerve to look at DMs and asks. It's an anxiety thing and I apologize to anyone who is waiting on a response. We need to get on meds for it somehow because this is a really debilitating issue that has stopped us from making and keeping friends for YEARS. And it happens regardless of who is fronting. Tuvok holds the general anxiety but this anxiety is a whole different ball game and we may need someone else to form and hold onto it.
I think that about covers it. See y'all next time.

[M!A] Was it a virus? A corrupted data packet triggering a glitch? A public software update / upgrade that'd been maliciously coded with petro-rabbit protocols? You've already heard about it across the datanet that something is spreading through the community; something that is causing your colleagues, your brethren, and even your enemies to become… vigorously amorous.
You think that you got your firewalls up in time, but… what is this warmth building in your seams?
[Heat Cycle M!A] [You must seek out a minimum three (3) partners to alleviate your symptoms to a manageable level.]
[Slag! Of course the very thing that Soundwave was attempting to chase down and delete from the Nemesis' code transfer system downloaded onto its own mainframe. Soundwave was simply lucky that Laserbeak was out on patrol- it had no idea what kind of damage this virus would do to her.]
[It already knew that there was no use in trying a code purge, or a defrag. The vehicons that had caught this...thing...had no luck in that department. The urge to keep coding and to destroy this thing once and for all was strong, but other urges became even stronger.]
[Primus below, to the Pits and back, and every other unholy swore Soundwave knew threatened to play from its recordings as it detached from the console. It would need to find a solution to this and fast.]

How will you handle the characterization of characters like Sam and Tucker? Danni?
What are some of the biggest changes to the overall story you are looking forward to exploring?
*cracks knuckles* alright here we go!
Sam and Tucker are extremely important to the series, more important than I think people tend to give them credit for, and that importance would be retained in Redux.
Tumblr media
Tucker would be more or less the same as the OG Tuck, he's still a big tech geek, still loves meat, is still simultaneously the comic relief and the voice of reason depending on the situation, etc. I mostly plan on just making a few subtle tweaks to his character to flesh him out a bit more than the show was willing to.
Now is the time to mention that Redux will take place the same year the OG show came out, 2004. So the tech that Tucker salivates over will be tech that's dated by our standards, he still uses a PDA like a cell-phone, and carries around a lot of big chunky gadgets like portable CD players and such. While he is mostly a programming guy, he will build and invent things, and will help Danny do the same. He invented Danny's goggles and co-invented the Thermos with Danny.
Tucker is the most emotionally available of the trio, he doesn't always have solutions but he's willing to hear people out, and with his weak constitution he is the least fond of fighting, tho not purely pacifistic. He is the most outgoing of the group as well, but doesn't desire popularity, he's pretty satisfied with his lot in life. He's just a pretty amicable guy and likes to talk a lot. Like in the show, he's been friends with Danny for the longest, and knows him the best.
Tumblr media
"Time to hack the mainframe..."
Tumblr media
*swats away computer*
Tumblr media
"Hello! This is the front desk, right? Sorry, I'm new and no one's told me the company password yet..."
I'd also take out his more wannabe-casanova traits, cause it's just kind of uncomfortable. I see him as more of a jughead-type, commenting on the drama and romance from the sidelines while never himself being too interested in it. He'll still joke about ladies loving him, but it'd be more tongue-in-cheek and self-aware.
Overall he tends to try to outsmart or talk his way out of situations, which can be a huge help, but also sometimes makes things worse. His smooth-talking has a 50/50 success rate.
He has a pretty good relationship with his parents, but can be kind of distant with his Dad, who is pretty overbearing and really wants Tucker to follow in his footsteps as the Mayor. It would be a running joke that Tucker is so disinterested in being the Mayor that he often times doesn't even justify his dad with a response. He will literally just leave if he can tell that that's where a conversation is going.
Tumblr media
Sam is probably the character that would be overhauled the most. The OG Sam isn't terrible, but is very obviously an attempt at a counter-cultural character by people who know nothing about counter-culture.
The biggest change I'd make is that she no longer comes from old money. I get what the OG show was trying to do, but even as a little kid I couldn't really buy it or her whole rebellious thing. Not when she still greatly benefited from her family's money.
Instead, she comes from a well-off upper middle-class house, and she hates her parents. Not just because they don't understand her, but because her parents are actually horrible. Her Dad is a lawyer who is always looking for loopholes to get the rich out of trouble, and her Mom runs an MLM selling cheap clothes to desperate housewives (Think LuLaRoe). Her parents don't not love her, but they are deeply terrible people who, at the end of the day, only really care about themselves. Sam has sworn to do everything in her power to not be like them. The only reason she hasn't run away is because they're not home often enough for her to have to deal with them too much.
Tumblr media
Danny: "Ow! Watch where you're poking!"
She tries to do as much on her own as she can, up to and including making basically everything she wears out of discount clothes and thrift shop purchases. While she does get an allowance, she doesn't spend any of it, she's saving her money so that she can leave home the moment she turns 18 and never look back. She is more interested in fashion than she often lets on, and dreams of running an eco-friendly fair trade boutique. After destroying capitalism, of course. She designed and made the alterations to Danny's jumpsuit, with the help of spectral thread that Danny had invented for her birthday.
In this series, Sam isn't just a holier-than-thou goth girl, she's a full-on anarchist punk-rock bitch, and she's proud of it. She will always speak her mind when she feels an injustice is taking place, and unlike in the OG series, Danny and Tucker will usually be there to back her up. That said, there's plenty that she gets up to on her own, she has had her brushes with the law, she's gotten into fights, she does not protest peacefully, and she usually doesn't involve Danny or Tucker because she doesn't want them to feel obligated to help her and then get hurt because of it.
She is strongly antisocial, and generally pretty closed off. She is the type of person who will listen to everyone's problems but won't speak about her own unless pushed. She is deeply loyal to and protective of her friends, sometimes to the point of being a little overbearing.
As for Danni, I certainly have thoughts, but I haven't settled completely on how she would fit in to the overall story. I do want her to be in the series, I just need to figure out what her deal would be.
EDIT! Completely forgot to answer the second part of the question!
The biggest change I'm looking forward to is giving Valerie more screen time, haha.

for the last time omfg Shadow is not bad at technology because he's a boomer, he simply karate-chopped the computer in ShTH because it was the easiest way to bypass it. The fact that his blunt-force solution worked should prove he's good with computers.
Gerald entrusted him with the operation of the Eclipse Cannon, meaning Shadow would need to know how to operate the ARK's mainframe in order to access it.
In addition, Shadow knew how to access Eggman's computer in Battle and knew of the existence of the self-destructive final program Gerald had installed in Emerl.
Also, the Bomb Unit and Heal Unit from The Doom? The gun lift from Lost Impact? He and Maria took a test to prove they could operate the Heal Unit?
"Shadow doesn't know computers," what the hell are you talking about? MoSTH made him bad at computers? MoSTH doesn't know what it's talking about; it's OOC. Are you kidding me right now dude

Horatio’s Logs.
Log #1
“Cave Johnson is dead. He collapsed of fatigue. We are continuing work on the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. A proper funeral is being- hang on. Hello, Caroline. Yeah, he’s- what? Oh… yeah, about that… No, we don’t have a choice. He- Hang on, let me just stop this log.”
*log end*
Log #2
“Well, Caroline sure freaked out. She’s the current president of Aperture Science, but she’s not taking kindly to the news about uploading her brain.
*Sigh*
When did things change? I remember when we were close friends, working on science together. Cave may have been the visionary behind the corporation, but Caroline kept things running. She’s always been scientifically minded, and a bit of a comedian as well. She can be a little… ditzy at times, but I know she just wants to uphold science. I tried explaining to her that she’s the only thing holding the facility together, but… well, she didn’t exactly want to hear it. Progress on the Genetic… hang on, uhhh… GLaDOS project is going smoothly. Estimated to be finished in a few weeks.”
*log end*
Log #3
“Today… is the day. We are uploading Caroline’s mind into a computer. Vitals are stable. All systems normal… wait! Stop- no! Caroline, stop struggling! Hey, wait- don’t- administer the sedative! I don’t-“
*Footsteps*
“Horatio-“
“Let me handle this.”
*More footsteps leaving the recording device.*
“Carolin-“
“Let me go!”
“No, listen, it’s going to be okay-“
“Please, Horatio, turn off the machine! Don’t go through with Mr. Johnson’s orders! Don’t-“
“sedatives administered.”
*log end.*
Log #4
“…. What have I done? I’ve betrayed one of my closest friends here at Aperture, and for what? To obey the ramblings of a dead madman?”
“Dr. Horatio? The others say that-“
“I don’t care about what the others say! Just go!”
“They need you in-“
“I SAID GO!”
*log end*
Log #5
*Heavy breathing.*
“Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. We… we booted up Caroline- I mean, GLaDOS, for the first time, and… ohhhh my god. Oh my god. She just started screaming incoherently and she… tried to kill some of them. She lunged directly for my hand… oh god… I had to wrap it up to stop it from bleeding out… god, it hurts. I’m pretty sure she crushed all the bones in my hand…”
*log end*
Log #6
“It’s been a few weeks since my last log. My left hand’s still in a cast… the “Lab Boys” as Cave called them, are still working on a solution. The mainframe and chassis are complete, but they’re still working on a way to prevent her from lashing out. I’ve been working on a few “Personality Cores” to maybe help with this. I’ve only finished the “Anger Core”, which should help her redirect her anger in a non-violent manner.”
*log end*
Log #7
“Alright. Anger Core has been inserted into the chassis. Powering up in three… two… one.”
“Oh. It’s you. Are you back to rub salt in the wound? Mock me? Betray me again?”
“… Test successful. GLaDOS does not appear to be violent.”
“Nobody loves you, you know. They all hate you so much. They made you do this because they were hoping I would kill you. And I would if I could.”
“Caroline… I’m so sorry.”
“You’re sorry? Oh, that fixes everything- WRONG. I HATE YOU. YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN. YOU BETRAYED YOUR BEST FRIEND BECAUSE YOU ARE A TERRIBLE AND MALICIOUS PERSON WHO IS SO BITTER THAT-“
*powering down*
*log end*
Log #8
“The Anger Core test… was a “success”. I’ve decided to step away from the GLaDOS project for now. The team has finished working on the Intelligence and Curiosity Cores. I fear that the uploading process and exposure to the outside programming of the mainframe and cores may have erased much of Caroline’s original personality.”
*log end*
Log #9
“They can’t seem to stop. They’ve had me make a lot of cores, but they keep getting discarded. They keep trying to slow her down, even though she doesn’t seem like much of a threat. I’ve started making cores of my own as a little pastime of sorts. Seven, to be specific. I made them in the dead of night and then threw four of them into the facility to do… whatever they do, but I kept three. I designed one to manage Aperture space missions… if we ever get around to doing that. I made one to be an advisor to people. I’m hoping to mass produce it into a commercial product. Lord knows some of us need an “Aperture Science Spherical Fact Dispenser”. I made the last one as a joke after watching three action movies in a row. Named him Rick. I’m not sure what his practical function is, but I like having him around.
*log end*
Log #10
“I’ve decided to rejoin the GLaDOS project. I feel so bad for her. She doesn’t even remember me now. I regret this. We shouldn’t have done this to her. We made her into this… cold, unfeeling, monster. It’s so strange. We can make AIs that feel so human and complex, but when we put a talkative human into a computer, she becomes so monotone and… empty. The engineers are glad she’s not a threat, but I worry.”
*log end*
Log #11
“Well, the team actually listened to my concerns. They’re making an Intelligence Dampening Sphere to generate bad ideas. I’m not working on it, but I am wondering how well he’ll do.”
Log #12
“The team wanted me to talk to the core before we add him into the chassis, so I’m going to boot him up in three… two… one.”
“Hello! Oh, you’re a…”
“Scientist?”
“Pharm- uh… yeah, scientist. Um… what is your, um, name?”
“I’m Horatio.”
“Oh, Horatio, very, uh, distinguished name. Not as distinguished as mine of course, which is… hmm, what’s my name again?”
“Um…….. Wheatley?”
“Right! That’s my name!”
*log end*
Log #13
“So, I named the core Wheatley. Nobody told me to. I just thought that it fit him well. Anyways, they attached him to GLaDOS, and she understandably freaked out, considering that she’s now being flooded with a hundred or so terrible ideas per second. The engineers think that she’s in a considerable position to run the facility. Sorting through a sea of bad ideas is slowing her down, enough for her to not really have time to think of a way to kill us all.”
*log end*
Log #14
“They removed Wheatley from the mainframe. They made up some jargon about him being “immune to paradoxes” thus making him a “safety threat” but I know the truth. They’re mad because he’s not a complete idiot. Sure, for all intents and purposes he fulfills his bad idea function, but personality-wise… he’s not a complete moron. And they’re mad about that because it mean they failed. So they wiped most of his memory and made him oversee the relaxation vaults.”
*log end*
Log#15
“Ever since they removed Wheat- the Intelligence Dampening Sphere, GLaDOS can’t be switched on anymore. She keeps trying to murder people. I think she’s so angry about us putting the IDS in her that it’s actually OVERLOADING the Anger Core. Henry made a Morality Core and attached it, but I think it needs more progress before we reactivate her. The only guy who seems to agree with me is Doug Rattman. He’s a smart guy, but he’s got Schizophrenia. Aperture’s providing him meds for free, but I fear it might be their way of keeping him on a leash of sorts.”
*log end*
Log #16
“GLaDOS has been docile since we put on the Morality Core, but she’s asked for access to neurotoxin for “experimental purposes”, and those idiots gave it to her!”
*Sigh*
“I think I’m going to pick up a gas mask, just in case.”
*Meow*
“Oh, I forgot. It’s bring your cat to work day…. Wait. Cardboard boxes… cats… neurotoxin… SHIT!”
*log end*
Log #17
“Fuck….GLaDOS killed 15 cats doing the Schrödinger’s cat experiment. I bet he came up with that as a justification for killing cats. Well, nothing to be done about it now. I’m even more nervous now. I finally picked up that gas mask I wanted. Neurotoxin-proof and everything. I got a backup as well, but it’s much shoddier than the other.”
*log end*
Log #18
“I made friends with the janitor today. She looks around twenty-five, and her name’s Chell. She’s oddly… bitter about everything. Maybe it’s because her only job opportunity was at Aperture, where both her parents work. Maybe it’s because of the insane working conditions. I joked about how they used to be way worse when ol’ Cave was in charge. She didn’t laugh at first but when I made a pun out of it, she cracked up. She really cares about the science being done here… and she is pretty funny too…. But she’s also stubborn as all hell. Definitely not like… her in that regard. Carol would fold in half if you asked her to.”
*Sigh*
“Some of the other engineers are making their own Personality Constructs and getting them to do… pretty menial tasks, but at least they have personalities…. Tomorrow is bring your daughter to work day. It’s the day of the science fair too. They do it in a different room every year so that the projects get “Preserved for future generations”. It’s an old tradition of Cave’s that we keep doing.”
*log end*
Log #19
“Shit, shit, shit! I was right. I gave my better mask to Doug, he’ll need it. GLaDOS started flooding the facility with neurotoxin… I KNEW Henry should’ve done more work on it… it must’ve fallen off! I have to… get to the… chamber… fix the core… and put it back on… maybe add some extra wireless features to make sure it doesn’t stop… working until it’s destroyed.”
*coughing*
*footsteps*
*footsteps accelerating*
*log end*
Log #20
“I’ve made it to the chamber… it’s worse than I thought. All the cores fell off. I can fix them all, I’ve got time…”
*mechanical noises*
*metal clanging*
*sound of a drill*
“There… anger core back on”
“Horatio. What are you accomplishing by doing this?”
*more metallic noises*
“Fixing… you!”
*drill sound*
“You aren’t going to accomplish anything, Horatio. Nothing besides hurting my feelings.”
“That’s rich. You don’t even remember what happened between us, Caroline.”
“Who is…”
*Drill sounds*

So fun thing about USENET: it grew out of the printer spooler
Unix was first developed internally at Bell Labs, which had a wide array of computer systems (Unix happened cuz they used the tiny PDP-11, originally PDP-7, that Bell didn't care what they did with).
Anyway, they wanted to be able to print on the really nice line printer on a Bell mainframe. Their solution was to let the printer spooler connect to this other system like a normal user at a terminal, log-in to an account, copy the text of the print into a file, issue the print command, and then delete the remote file when it was done.
As the number of Unix systems increased thruought the '70's, this was generalized into the "Unix-to-Unix Copy Program" -- the awfully named UUCP. It worked the same way -- login to another unix system with a special account that only had permissions to its own folder + a couple programs, upload files, and run a remote command on them -- such as printing.
But you could also extend this with email capability! They already had a dirt-simple mail program that cud write to users on the local system (lookup their home directory and prepend the message to a ".mbox" file there, that was pretty much it). Modifying this to UUCP the message and running mail on the remote the machine was easy as pie.
And you could go further! UUCP let you chain a file to get set to a remote computer several computers away, copying it down the chain until it got to the destination you wanted to run the command on. So you might have a home machine that connected to your local office that connected to a local university that connected to a bigger university, etc etc.
And USENET was built on top of this! Your local USENET system would "subscribe" to several channels, and then it would use UUCP to sync any posts on those channels -- downloading what they had that you didn't, and uploading the reverse.
They got this more or less for free. Obviously it wasn't very secure. But it had the bonus of making every USENET server carry around a complete archive of its channels, which is why USENET is so well preserved.

How Custom APIs Can Bridge Your Old Systems with Modern Tools
Tumblr media
In an era of rapid digital transformation, companies face mounting pressure to stay agile, integrated, and scalable. Yet, for many businesses, legacy systems—software built decades ago—remain deeply embedded in their day-to-day operations. While these systems often house critical data and workflows, they are frequently incompatible with modern tools, cloud services, and mobile apps.
This is where custom APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) come in. Rather than rip and replace your existing systems, custom APIs offer a powerful and cost-effective way to connect legacy infrastructure with modern applications, extending the life and value of your current technology stack.
In this blog, we explore how custom APIs bridge the gap between the old and new, and why partnering with a custom software development company in New York is the key to unlocking this integration.
Understanding the Legacy Dilemma
Legacy systems are often mission-critical, but they can be:
Built on outdated technologies
Poorly documented
Incompatible with cloud-native tools
Rigid and difficult to scale
Lacking modern security standards
Despite their limitations, many organizations can’t afford to replace these systems outright. The risks of downtime, data loss, and cost overruns are simply too high. The solution? Wrap them in custom APIs to make them work like modern systems—without the need for complete redevelopment.
What Are Custom APIs?
A custom API is a tailored interface that allows software systems—regardless of their age or architecture—to communicate with each other. APIs translate data and commands into a format that both the old system and the new tools can understand.
With a well-designed API, you can:
Expose data from a legacy database to a web or mobile app
Allow cloud tools like Salesforce, Slack, or HubSpot to interact with your internal systems
Enable real-time data sharing across departments and platforms
Automate manual workflows that previously required human intervention
By working with a software development company in New York, you can create secure, scalable APIs that connect your most valuable legacy systems with cutting-edge technologies.
Why Modern Businesses Need Custom APIs
1. Avoid Expensive System Replacements
Rebuilding or replacing legacy systems is expensive, time-consuming, and risky. Custom APIs offer a lower-cost, lower-risk alternative by extending system capabilities without touching the core.
Companies that work with custom software development companies in New York can protect their existing investments while gaining modern functionality.
2. Enable Integration with Cloud and SaaS Platforms
Most modern SaaS platforms rely on APIs for connectivity. Custom APIs allow legacy systems to seamlessly:
Push data into cloud CRMs or ERPs
Trigger automated workflows via platforms like Zapier or Make
Sync with eCommerce, finance, or HR software
This means your old software can now "talk" to cutting-edge services—without needing a full migration.
3. Boost Business Agility
In today's fast-paced environment, agility is a competitive advantage. APIs let you innovate quickly by connecting existing systems to new apps, dashboards, or devices. This flexibility makes it easier to adapt to new customer demands or market trends.
That’s why the top software development companies in New York prioritize API-first development in digital transformation strategies.
Real-World Use Cases: Bridging Old and New with APIs
1. Legacy ERP + Modern BI Tools
A manufacturing firm uses a 20-year-old ERP system but wants modern analytics. A custom software development company in New York creates APIs that extract relevant data and feed it into Power BI or Tableau for real-time dashboards—no need to rebuild the ERP.
2. Mainframe + Mobile Application
A financial services provider wants to offer customers a mobile app without replacing its mainframe. A custom API acts as the bridge, securely transmitting data between the mobile frontend and the back-end system.
3. CRM Integration
A healthcare provider uses a legacy patient database but wants to sync data with Salesforce. Custom APIs enable bidirectional integration, allowing staff to use Salesforce without duplicating data entry.
Key Features of a High-Quality Custom API
When you work with a custom software development company in New York, you can expect your API to be:
1. Secure
APIs are a potential attack vector. A quality solution includes:
Token-based authentication (OAuth 2.0)
Role-based access control
Encryption in transit and at rest
Audit logs and usage tracking
2. Scalable
Your API must be able to handle increased traffic as your business grows. Proper load balancing, caching, and rate limiting ensure performance under load.
3. Well-Documented
Clear documentation ensures your development teams and third-party vendors can integrate efficiently. OpenAPI/Swagger standards are often used for this purpose.
4. Versioned and Maintainable
APIs must be version-controlled to allow for upgrades without breaking existing integrations. A skilled software development company in New York will build a future-proof architecture.
Custom APIs vs Middleware: What’s the Difference?
Some businesses confuse APIs with middleware. While both can connect systems:
Middleware is a more generalized layer that handles communication between systems
Custom APIs are specifically designed for a particular integration or business need
Custom APIs are more flexible, lightweight, and tailored to your workflow—making them ideal for companies that need precise, scalable connections.
Why Work with a Custom Software Development Company in New York?
Building effective APIs requires a deep understanding of both legacy systems and modern tech stacks. Here’s why businesses trust custom software development companies in New York:
Local knowledge of regulatory requirements, compliance, and market needs
Time zone alignment for seamless collaboration
Experience with complex integrations across industries like finance, healthcare, logistics, and retail
Access to top-tier engineering talent for scalable, secure API architecture
Partnering with the best software development company in New York ensures your integration project is delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with your long-term business goals.
The Role of API Management Platforms
For businesses dealing with multiple APIs, platforms like MuleSoft, Postman, or Azure API Management provide centralized control. A top software development company in New York can help you:
Monitor performance and uptime
Control access and permissions
Analyze usage metrics
Create scalable microservices environments
Conclusion: Modernization Without Disruption
Legacy systems don’t have to hold you back. With the right strategy, they can be revitalized and connected to the tools and platforms that power modern business. Custom APIs act as bridges, allowing you to preserve what works while embracing what’s next.
For businesses in New York looking to modernize without massive overhauls, partnering with a trusted custom software development company in New York like Codezix is the smartest move. From planning and development to deployment and support, Codezix builds the API solutions that connect your old systems with tomorrow’s innovation.
