𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘄𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗲!

As always you can replace certain ingredients to suit dietry requirements and as always, my baking is a 'wing it' style!

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

• ½ cup granulated sugar (100 g)

• 1 cup brown sugar (220 g), packed

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• ½ cup melted unsalted butter (115 g)

• 1 egg

• 1 egg yolk

• 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

• 2 cups all-purpose flour (250 g)

• ½ teaspoon baking soda

• 4 oz milk or semi-sweet chocolate chunks(110 g)

• 4 oz dark chocolate chunk(110 g), or your preference

I used the Google conversion from cups to grams.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

1) In a large bowl, whisk together the sugars, salt, and butter until a paste forms with no lumps.

2)Whisk in the egg and vanilla, beating until light ribbons fall off the whisk and remain for a short while before falling back into the mixture.

3) Sift in the flour and baking soda, then fold the mixture with a spatula. Be careful not to overmix - if you mix (or roll out) cookie dough too much, you'll add excess air to the dough, causing it to rise and then fall flat in the oven. Overmixing the dough can also lead to excess gluten development, resulting in dense cookies (which is what happened with these cookies but they still taste good!)

4) Fold in the chocolate chunks, then chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. For a more intense toffee-like flavor and deeper colour, chill the dough overnight. The longer the dough rests, the more complex its flavour will be.

5) Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

6) Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

7) Scoop the dough with an ice-cream scoop onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space between cookies and 2 inches (5 cm) of space from the edges of the pan so that the cookies can spread evenly.

8) Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges have started to barely brown.

9) Cool before serving but to be fair warm cookies are legit 🤌

Today I tried to this recipe. It one was easy to make.

It was mild flavoured and soo crispy.

I couldn't decide to this recipe is a salt or a sweet biscuit. It was more salty as a sweet biscuit but more sweet as a salt biscuit. I used 1 cup of sugar instead of ½ cup.

Next time I will try with less salt.

Overall I really liked it.

Mid year book freakout tag

This has been a bit of a weird reading year for me so far but here we go.

1. What is the best book you've read in 2024 so far?

Toss up between Exo+Cross Fire (Fonda Lee) and Alien Clay (Adrian Tchaikovsky)

Right, so Exo+Cross Fire, a duology, is a fantastically nuanced take on colonialism/imperialism, and also a very compelling, fun, interesting, heart-wrenching read. There are fun aliens! Well, I say "fun". Interesting might be the word.

And Alien Clay is a drily humorous story of a man at an exoplanetary labour camp attempting to scientifically understand alien life while also straining against dogmatic rules for said science. There is fun alien life! Well, I say "fun". Interesting might be the word.

2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2024?

Cross Fire (Fonda Lee) or The Girl and the Moon (Mark Lawrence) (it really stuck the landing. Like really).

3. New (from 2024, ideally) release you haven't read yet, but want to?

Most Ardently, Gabe Cole Novoa (Pride and Prejudice retelling with an trans Oliver Bennet, who most believe is a girl named Elizabeth, as main character? Yes, please)

4. Most anticipeated release for second half of 2024?

I haven't really looked at what's coming :/

5. Biggest disappointment?

I've read some really meh books this year but they've mostly been weird romance stuff where I wouldn't necessarily expect them to be great either. Idk. Maybe Sweet Berries (CM Nascosta) or Bound to the Shadow Prince (Ruby Dixon) because they were worse than books by the same authors I'd already read - so below expectations.

6. Biggest surprise?

Probably that I really enjoyed an Omegaverse book: Lola & the Millionairs (Parts 1 and 2), Kathryn Moon.

7. New favourite author?

I read my first T Kingfisher this year - A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking - and it was so fun and lovely! I am a sucker for familiars (in various shapes and forms) and this one has two :D so probably that one. I guess we'll see how I feel once I've read more from Kingfisher.

Runner up is Mark Lawrence - I read him for the first time 2023 (The Girl and the Stars) but finished that trilogy, Book of the Ice, this year - and am now looking forward to reading more by him.

8. Newest fictional crush?

Oh this is always hard, I don't know that I get crushes like that? I tend to like the characters in the relationships they're in, not for myself. I certainly liked the pack from Lola (maybe especially Matthieu). I loved Edwin and Robin from A Marvellous Light (Freya Marske) together. The Shadow Creature in Two for Tea: Welcome to Azathé (CM Nascosta) was an inspiring concept.

9. Newest favourite character?

Bob the Sentient Sourdough Starter (A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, T Kingfisher).

10. Book that made you cry?

Exo/Cross Fire, Fonda Lee (I read these in quick succession and am struggling to remember what happened in which book, but I think both may have made me cry, actually. Certainly at least one)

11. Book that made you happy?

Well, plenty of cozy romancy stuff, I guess - at least temporarily (The Dragons of Mayfair come to mind. Also Lola). But also any of the really great books like Exo and Alien Clay will make me happy just because they're good and I enjoy them.

12. Most beautiful book you've bought this year?

Didn't by either of these as I listened to them via my audiobook service (where you don't pay for individual books, you subscribe and get access to their library), but the Book of the Ice books are all gorgeous, and I love the cover of Alien Clay as well.

13. What books do you really need to read by the end of the year?

Oh god, I need to get back into and finish Witch King (Martha Wells), it is silly and stupid that I've just stopped in the middle. I mean I love it! It's so so good. And because I love it so much I worry I'll ruin the reading experience of it by being in a weird reading funk. (Also I feel bad because I'm (supposed to be) buddy reading it with @moriaine).

Yonderland 3x07 Boo, the Cake Bake Ladies

I think a lot (almost every time I use my stand mixer) about the time when I was living at my dad's house and his GF used her stand mixer to make a boxed cake.

She has and always will have this weirdly perverse desire to be in competition with me. For what reason idk but it's been this way since I was 12. She always wants to 1 up me or divert attention from my dad. But I digress.

She knows I am a very good baker. Have been doing it just about as long as I could walk.

So one day my half brother comes down stairs and says he needs a cake for an elementary school class Halloween party. She proceeds to make a federal case out of it and buys some Pillsbury boxed cake mix with Halloween sprinkles in the mix.

Here's the part where I have to declare: I am not knocking anyone who uses boxed cake mix. Especially for a kid's class party. Cake mix is great in a pinch or just as a base you can build off of to do some amazing stuff with. It's fine.

But this woman. Knowing I bake. A lot. And am good at it and have been my whole life. Proceeds to climb onto her kitchen counters to get her stand mixer out of the top cabinets. Which should tell you how much she uses it. These suckers are heavy. Unwieldy.

She puts her physical safety in peril to get the stand mixer out. To make boxed cake mix. Cause she wanted to show off she had a stand mixer and I didn't yet. I was 21 and didn't even have my own place yet...

She didn't even deviate from the boxed instructions & swap any ingredients for better things. Just made straight up boxed cake mix, something you can make without even a hand mixer, with a stand mixer, so she could feel superior to me for the 45 seconds it took for her watery ass batter to come together.

Danny has a Cooking channel

Danny is in Gotham for College or whatever and out of boredom starts a cooking channel on YouTube.

So, picture this Danny is cooking like he’s trying to kill somebody. And never refers to ingredients as their name. And constantly cracks jokes about the recipe he’s cooking from.

This is all well and good until ghosts start asking him to make family recipes passed down from generations, now Danny doesn’t know that there family recipes because the ghost thinks it’s the HIGHEST HONOR for their King to want to cook something from when they were alive.

Cue one day on his channel he makes a pie but not just any pie but a pie MARTHA WAYNE herself created.

Alfred is curious about how this young man knows this recipe, meanwhile Bruce is losing his mind because Danny looks like a male version of his mother.
