All the books I reviewed in 2023 (Novels)
Tumblr media
Next Tuesday (December 5), I'm at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill, NC, with my new solarpunk novel The Lost Cause, which 350.org's Bill McKibben called "The first great YIMBY novel: perceptive, scientifically sound, and extraordinarily hopeful."
Tumblr media
It's that time of year again, when I round up all the books I reviewed for my newsletter in the previous year. I posted 21 reviews last year, covering 31 books (there are two series in there!). I also published three books of my own last year (two novels and one nonfiction). A busy year in books!
Every year, these roundups remind me that I did actually manager to get a lot of reading done, even if the list of extremely good books that I didn't read is much longer than the list of books I did read. I read many of these books while doing physiotherapy for my chronic pain, specifically as audiobooks I listened to on my underwater MP3 player while doing my daily laps at the public pool across the street from my house.
After many years of using generic Chinese waterproof MP3s players – whose quality steadily declined over a decade – I gave up and bought a brand-name player, a Shokz Openswim. So far, I have no complaints. Thanks to reader Abbas Halai for recommending this!
https://shokz.com/products/openswim
I load up this gadget with audiobook MP3s bought from Libro.fm, a fantastic, DRM-free alternative to Audible, which is both a monopolist and a prolific wage-thief with a documented history of stealing from writers:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/25/can-you-hear-me-now/#acx-ripoff
All right, enough with the process notes, on to the reviews!
Tumblr media
NOVELS
I. Temeraire by Naomi Novik
Tumblr media
One of the finest pleasures in life is to discover a complete series of novels as an adult, to devour them right through to the end, and to arrive at that ending to discover that, while you'd have happily inhabited the author's world for many more volumes, you are eminently satisfied with the series' conclusion.
I just had this experience and I am still basking in the warm glow of having had such a thoroughly fulfilling imaginary demi-life for half a year. I'm speaking of the nine volumes in Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, which reimagines the Napoleonic Wars in a world that humans share with enormous, powerful, intelligent dragons.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/08/temeraire/#but-i-am-napoleon
II. Destroyer of Worlds by Matt Ruff
Tumblr media
The Destroyer of Worlds is a spectacular followup to Lovecraft Country that revisits the characters, setting, and supernatural dread of the original. Country was structured as a series of linked novellas, each one picking up where the previous left off, with a different focal characters. Destroyer is a much more traditional braided novel, moving swiftly amongst the characters and periodically jumping back in time to the era of American slavery, retelling the story of the settlement of the Great Dismal swamp by escaped slaves.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/21/the-horror-of-white-magic/#anti-lovecraftian
III. Scholomance by Naomi Novik
Tumblr media
The wizards of the world live in constant peril from maleficaria – the magic monsters that prey on those born with magic, especially the children. In a state of nature, only one in ten wizard kids reaches adulthood. So the wizarding world built the Scholomance, a fully automated magical secondary school that exists in the void – a dimension beyond our world. The Scholomance is also an extremely dangerous place – three quarters of the wizard children who attend will die before graduation – but it is much safer than life on the outside.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/29/hobbeswarts/#the-chosen-one
IV. Tsalmoth by Steven Brust
Tumblr media
Longrunning Brust hero Vlad Taltos has been convinced to recount the story of how he and Cawti came to fall in love, and how they planned their marriage. This is quite an adventure – it plays out against the backdrop of a gang-war within the Jhereg organization, with Vlad in severe mortal peril that he can only avoid by uncovering an intricate criminal caper of crosses, double-crosses, smuggling and sorcery. But while Vlad is dodging throwing knives and lethal spells (or not!), what's really going on is that he and Cawti are falling deeply, profoundly, irrevocably in love. The romance that plays out among the blades and magic is more magical still, a grand passion that expresses itself through Nick-and-Nora wordplay and Three Musketeers swordplay.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/27/mannerpunk/#ask-anyone
V. Hopeland by Ian McDonald
Tumblr media
Seriously what the fuck is this amazing, uncategorizable, unsummarizable, weird, sprawling, hairball of a novel? How the hell do you research – much less write – a novel this ambitious and wide-ranging? Why did I find myself weeping uncontrollably on a train yesterday as I finished it, literally squeezing my chest over my heart as it broke and sang at the same moment? The stars of Hopeland are members of two ancient, secret societies. There's Raisa Hopeland, who belongs to a globe-spanning, mystical "family," that's one part mutual aid, one part dance music subculture, and one part sorcerer (some Hopelanders are electromancers, making strange, powerful magic with Tesla coils). Amon is a composer and DJ who specializes in making music for very small groups of people – preferably just one person – that is so perfect for them that they are transformed by hearing it.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/30/electromancy/#the-grace
VI. The World Wasn't Ready For You by Justin Key
Tumblr media
These are horror stories, though some of them are science fiction too, and more to the point, they're Black horror stories. In his afterword, Key writes about his early fascination with horror, the catharsis he felt in watching nightmares unspool on screen or off the page. And then, he writes, came the dawning recognition that the Black characters in these stories were always there as cannon-fodder, often nameless, usually picked off early. "Black horror" isn't merely parables about racism. In the deft hands of these writers – and now, Key – the stories are horror in which Blackness is a fact, sometimes a central one, and that fact is ever a complication, limiting how the characters move through space, interact with authority, and relate to one another.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/19/justin-c-key/#clarion-west-2015
Tumblr media
VII. The Future by Naomi Alderman
A cracking, multi-point-of-view adventure novel about billionaires prepping for the end of the world. Three billionaires, the lords of thinly veiled analogs to Facebook, Google and Amazon, each getting ready in their own way. Stumbling into their midst comes Lai Zhen, a prepper influencer vlogger with millions of followers.
When Zhen becomes romantically entangled with Martha Einkorn, the top aide and chief-of-prepping for one of these billionaires, she finds herself in possession of an AI chatbot that is devoted to protecting a very small number of people from incipient danger. This chatbot determines that Zhen is being stalked by an assassin at a mall in Singapore, and guides her to safety.
The chatbot is a closely held secret among the tech billionaire cabal. It is designed to monitor world events and predict when The Event is imminent, be it disease, war, or other cataclysmic disaster. With the chatbot's predictive powers and its superhuman guidance, the billionaires, their families, and their closest confidantes will be able to slip away before the shit hits the fan, fly by different private jets to one or another luxury bunker, and wait out the apocalypse. Once the fires raging without have died down to embers, the chatbot's billionaire charges will emerge to assume their places as wise and all-powerful leaders of the next human civilization.

VIII. Liberty's Daughter by Naomi Kritzer
There's so much sf about "competent men" running their families with entrepreneurial zeal, clarity of vision and a firm confident hand. But there's precious little fiction about how much being raised by a Heinlein dad would *suuuck*. But it would, and in *Liberty's Daughter*, we get a peek inside the nightmare.

Tumblr media
Like I said, this has been a good year in books for me, and it included three books of my own:
I. Red Team Blues (novel, Tor Books US, Head of Zeus UK)
Tumblr media
Martin Hench is 67 years old, single, and successful in a career stretching back to the beginnings of Silicon Valley. He lives and roams California in a very comfortable fully-furnished touring bus, The Unsalted Hash, that he bought years ago from a fading rock star. He knows his way around good food and fine drink. He likes intelligent women, and they like him back often enough. Martin is a—contain your excitement—self-employed forensic accountant, a veteran of the long guerilla war between people who want to hide money, and people who want to find it. He knows computer hardware and software alike, including the ins and outs of high-end databases and the kinds of spreadsheets that are designed to conceal rather than reveal. He’s as comfortable with social media as people a quarter his age, and he’s a world-level expert on the kind of international money-laundering and shell-company chicanery used by Fortune 500 companies, mid-divorce billionaires, and international drug gangs alike. He also knows the Valley like the back of his hand, all the secret histories of charismatic company founders and Sand Hill Road VCs. Because he was there at all the beginnings. Now he’s been roped into a job that’s more dangerous than anything he’s ever agreed to before—and it will take every ounce of his skill to get out alive.

II. The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation (nonfiction, Verso)
Tumblr media
We can – we must – dismantle the tech platforms. We must to seize the means of computation by forcing Silicon Valley to do the thing it fears most: interoperate. Interoperability will tear down the walls between technologies, allowing users to leave platforms, remix their media, and reconfigure their devices without corporate permission. Interoperability is the only route to the rapid and enduring annihilation of the platforms. The Internet Con is the disassembly manual we need to take back our internet.
https://www.versobooks.com/products/3035-the-internet-con
III. The Lost Cause (novel, Tor Books US, Head of Zeus UK)
Tumblr media
For young Americans a generation from now, climate change isn't controversial. It's just an overwhelming fact of life. And so are the great efforts to contain and mitigate it. Entire cities are being moved inland from the rising seas. Vast clean-energy projects are springing up everywhere. Disaster relief, the mitigation of floods and superstorms, has become a skill for which tens of millions of people are trained every year. The effort is global. It employs everyone who wants to work. Even when national politics oscillates back to right-wing leaders, the momentum is too great; these vast programs cannot be stopped in their tracks.
But there are still those Americans, mostly elderly, who cling to their red baseball caps, their grievances, their huge vehicles, their anger. To their "alternative" news sources that reassure them that their resentment is right and pure and that "climate change" is just a giant scam. And they're your grandfather, your uncle, your great-aunt. And they're not going anywhere. And they’re armed to the teeth. The Lost Cause asks: What do we do about people who cling to the belief that their own children are the enemy? When, in fact, they're often the elders that we love?
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865939/the-lost-cause
Tumblr media
I wrote nine books during lockdown, and there's plenty more to come. The next one is The Bezzle, a followup to Red Team Blues, which comes out in February:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865878/thebezzle
While you're waiting for that one, I hope the reviews above will help you connect with some excellent books. If you want more of my reviews, here's my annual roundup from 2022:

The Librarians (2014) 图书馆员
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starring: Bob Newhart / Christian Kane / Jane Curtin / John King / John Larquette / Lindy Booth / Matt Frewer / Noah Wyle / Rebecca Romijn / Lesley-Ann Blade Genre: Drama / Comedy / Action / Fantasy / Adventure Country/Region of Production: United States Language: English Date: 2014-12-07 (USA) Number of seasons: 4 Number of episodes: 42 Single episode length: 42 minutes Also known as: Librarian IMDb: tt3663490 Type: Crossover
Summary:
The series follows four people newly recruited by The Library: Colonel Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn), of the NATO Anti-Terrorist Unit, destined to be the new Guardian; Ezekiel Jones (John Harlan Kim), a consummate thief who can hack an NSA computer as easily as he can steal a Fabergé egg; Cassandra Cillian (Lindy Booth), a brilliant scientist and mathematician who possesses a trace of magic; and Jacob Stone (Christian Kane), polymath, linguist, expert in architecture, art, art history, archaeology and world cultures of the past and present, including Native American cultures, and other fields too numerous to mention, including bar fighting. The latter three received invitations from the Library at the same time as the current Librarian, Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle), but for various reasons didn't show up for their interviews.
In a break with the concept established in the films that there can be only one Librarian at a time, the first episodes reveal that the state of the world is so dire that it needs a team of Librarians, with Baird serving as Guardian of all four. With the help of Jenkins/Galahad (John Larroquette), immortal manager of the Library’s Annex, they solve impossible mysteries, rewrite and fix key moments in history, recover powerful magical artifacts, fight against supernatural threats, and learn important things about themselves and each other. In the first season, they battle the forces of the Serpent Brotherhood, led by the mysterious immortal Dulaque (Matt Frewer). Carsen, who spends the first season searching for the main Library (removed from time and space at the beginning of the series) appears in some episodes.
The second season offers up a pair of new villains, both from fiction: Prospero (Richard Cox), from Shakespeare's The Tempest, and Moriarty (David S. Lee), Sherlock Holmes' chief nemesis. The former is positioned as the greater evil, attempting to use magic to destroy the world in order to remake it more to his liking. Moriarty is more of a gray villain—generally aligned with Prospero but willing to side with the Librarians when it suits his own interests.
The third season introduces a new adversary, Apep, the Egyptian God of Chaos. Defeated centuries before by the first Librarian, Judson (Bob Newhart), and his Guardian, Charlene (Jane Curtin), he is resurrected when his sarcophagus is opened and embarks on a mission to release pure evil into the world, possessing many different people along the way. While they are trying to stop Apep, the Librarians' actions are closely monitored by General Cynthia Rockwell (Vanessa Williams) from a new secret government agency, called DOSA (Department of Statistical Anomalies).
The fourth season does away with season-long story arcs in favor of stand-alone episodes, with three ongoing issues: Before the vernal equinox, Flynn and Eve must undertake a ceremony that will bind them to each other and to the Library, as Charlene and Judson did before them. They will become immortal and bind the Library to Earth, giving it a human connection and a human heart rather than the cold, implacable and dangerously self-centered attitude that would characterize it without that bond. (We learn in season three that the Library is a conscious entity.) The return of Nicole Noone, Flynn's first Guardian, believed dead and now immortal, raises many questions. And conflict arises between the Librarians over former Librarian Darrington Dare's assertion that there can only be one Librarian at a time, or the result will be disastrous. These three stories are not resolved until the last episode.

I haven't been a movie nerd even ONCE on this account. Here's my top 10 movies in 2023
1. The Lord of the Rings (trilogy)
Tumblr media
IT STILL COUNTS AS ONE
Can't go wrong here. There's fantasy, action scenes, friendship, romance, badass dialogue, comedy. There's refreshing masculinity where men are close friends, fight for each other, die for each other, kiss each other on the forehead, sing, etc. The Aragorn Arwen romance is sweet and isn't overblown, and the main theme is to fight for good. If you're tired of anti-heroes and want a clean good vs. evil, this is it. The downside is not having poc representation and only 3 important women, but they are extremely awesome and play pivotal roles. If you've heard about LOTR for forever but never actually seen it, here's your sign.
2. The Lego Movie
Tumblr media
This movie sells itself, but I have seen it maybe. 40 times. And I could quote it from start to end as a kid. It's funny, has crossover characters along with the main ones (like Batman, Superman, Gandalf, Abraham Lincoln, Han Solo), lots of references, and the main message is that you're special in your own way. It's very autism coded, I think
3. Jaws
Tumblr media
Classic man vs. monster, and it's great if you don't watch thrillers and need something "dip your toes in." While the majority of the town goes all rambo trying to kill the shark, the main characters are the opposite. The chief of police is ultimately empathetic and wants to stop more people from being hurt, Matt Hooper is a shark expert "city boy" coming along, and Quint has a boat that needs to be bigger
4. My Cousin Vinny
Tumblr media
Vinny is a lawyer taking a case to prove his cousin didn't murder a clerk, but he's the worst lawyer in existence. He forgot everything he learned in law school, can't stop wearing a leather jacket to court, and his fiancée saves him most times. It has some of the most quotable lines and 10/10 I recommend to Alabamans for the southern jokes
5. Knives Out
Tumblr media
A modern "whodunit" mystery that shines the most because it's a comedy. The main character Marta is the only one who thinks she knows what happened, but she pukes every time she tells a lie. Benoit Blanc is also the most iconic detective to me and one of my favorite characters ever
6. Tommy Boy
Tumblr media
This has a very similar tone to My Cousin Vinny, but it's a road trip movie. After Tommy's dad dies, he and Richard (a jerk coworker) try to sell autoparts to save his company. They're the worst salesmen in existence, but ultimately are creative and pull some shenanigans (Tommy and Richard go from rivals to buddies). It's from the 90s and not very chill with the r-slur and some fat jokes, but it's ultimately a feel-good movie if that isn't a dealbreaker for you
7. Jurassic Park
Tumblr media
Like Jaws, another classic pop culture movie. The score is so good, and they make a world full of dinosaurs have the same magic feel as the wizarding world. It's an adventure movie with great action scenes and characters. (This is a trope I love personally but) Alan Grant is a grump who doesn't like kids, but later he looks after them. Ellie Sattler is one of my favorite characters ever, and Jeff Goldblum lays on a table. Survival movies are fun 10/10
8. Joker (2019)
Tumblr media
DROOLING OVER THE CINEMATOGRAPHY. It's such a well-made movie, and you never know entirely what's real with unreliable narrating. It makes you feel for Arthur and understand his actions while knowing he made the wrong decisions in the end. Some think it's negative for mental health representation, but it can be used as a cautionary tale for the ways mentally ill people are mistreated and how the events that led to the start of the film weren't his fault. Ultimately, I think it inspires more empathy, and it's a piece of art
9. Signs
Tumblr media
I'm a sucker for the "everything makes sense in the end" trope. A lot of people didn't like the combo of two supernaturals (the existence of God and aliens), but I don't think it ruins the movie. It centers around a family struggling with the death of their mother (or sister or wife, depending on the character), and the ex-priest dad had lost connection with his faith. He happens to find it again because of an alien invasion. Normal Tuesday
10. Arsenic and Old Lace
Tumblr media
From 1944, it's a weird movie and the acting is iconic. Mortimer is trying to get to his honeymoon, but when he visits his aunts, he finds a dead body in the house. It's a comedy involving shenanigans, avoiding the police, and an uncle who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt. (It's a bit outdated as far as mental illness goes, but Mortimer's goal is to put his family in the care of a mental institution rather than shipping them off or telling the police.) As a drama queen, I also appreciate Cary Grant being a drama queen
10 honorable mentions: Lego Batman, Napoleon Dynamite, The Goofy Movie, Clue, Psycho, Marriage Story, Into the Spiderverse, Avengers Endgame, Dead Poets Society, Muder on the Orient Express. Swag thanks for reading

SPEAKING OF DErs SHIFTING GOALPOSTS
So, I blocked this anon because like I said, in this stage of my tumblr tenure, when it comes to TVD, I’m more interested in discussing things with shippers of my ships and not arguing with antis. However, that doesn’t mean I won’t sometimes discuss asks with said shippers. Originally, I went through each of anon’s arguments point by point in excruciating detail with multiple images and gifs but a) tumblr doesn’t like that it seems, even when I split my response into two posts b) it’s not anything new, my responses to those arguments can be found in the master list, which means I’m only going to focus on the beginning when anon uses a different approach to the same old argument.
So, here’s the ask:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is an example of applying your own connotations to a scene and deliberately misinterpreting context to fit your argument because first of all, here are all the appearances of Wickery Bridge when Stefan and Elena are together in seasons 1 and 2
Tumblr media
Here are the appearances of Wickery Bridge pre-sirebond
Season Three
Our Town
Break On Through
The Departed
Appearances during sirebond
Season Four
We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes
Appearances post-sirebond
Season Five
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Season Six
I'm Thinking Of You All The While (Elena's hallucinations)
Season Eight
You Decided That I Was Worth Saving (Altered Memory)
Second of all, Wickery Bridge doesn’t actually represent Elena’s survivor guilt, Wickery Bridge represents change and transition in Elena’s life.
The first accident transitions her to this change/phase of her life:
Tumblr media
which begets this change:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that comes along with another change:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she talks to Matt in 3x11, she doesn’t lament the fact that she’s alive and that her parents are dead -- in fact, that’s so far from her mind that Matt makes a crack about her jumping
Tumblr media
what she’s lamenting is that she’s far from the girl she was pre-accident
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I’m just going to get this out of the way now because I can see people saying that since Elena is nervous about letting her old self go in 3x11 and then she says to Stefan “it’s OK to let her go” in 4x07, it’s proof that Elena was too scared to choose Damon in season 3, I’m just going to post a screenshot of all the links in the masterlist I have that explain what 3x22 means so you can go there if you want to read about the whole “Elena was scared” debate
Tumblr media
and I’m going to spell out the context of 3x11, which is two-fold.
1. Elena had been trying to do something normal and high school for Caroline (the director was so dumb for having Elena wear the tiara before giving it to Caroline, this is why people hate her)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and even when they accommodate that to suit Caroline’s grief of her human life, it’s still a day where she’s not dealing with the supernatural, she’s just hanging out with her friends like she did before she the accident
Tumblr media
and that sense of normalcy gets interrupted by a bunch of complexities i.e Stefan taking her and psyching Klaus out by threatening to drive Elena off the very bridge where he saved her life
Tumblr media
and because she knows the complexities and the nuances of the situation, despite what had just happened, she still loves him
Tumblr media
2. She made a morally complicated i.e. questionable decision by having Damon compel Jeremy to want to leave and Bonnie had been giving her shit about it  because she’s messing with Jeremy’s free will
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yeah there’s her attraction to Damon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but who cares about that amirite? Watching this scene was hilarious because of how not angsty it was, especially in comparison to something like 3x14? (If you want to read some meta about Damon and Elena in season 3 or the triangle in general, refer to the master list)
so Matt is telling her it’s OK to let her pre-accident sense of normalcy go. It’s also interesting to note this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
because of what Matt has said about Stefan’s relationship to Elena in the past:
The scene is about rebirth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
very much like when Stefan brought everyone together in 4x02 and Elena lights a lantern for her human self, so she grieve and she can heal and she can move on
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is very much like 3x20, Stefan tells her it’s OK to stop and grieve, to feel, to be in connection with her emotions
Tumblr media
which is very much like 2x20, when he tells her to stop running from her emotions, to embrace the grief and find the beauty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 4x06 when Elena is on Wickery Bridge and she’s hallucinating her mother, her hallucination is not cursing her for living while they’re dead, her hallucination is saying that her vampirism is monstrous
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
because again, when she was driven off the bridge in 3x22 that was a transition into another phase of her life
Tumblr media
and when Damon throws her back into the water, that’s supposed to be another form of rebirth
Tumblr media
what I do find so telling about this scene is that while Damon may be the one who threw her into the water and said absolutely nothing that got through to her
Tumblr media
it was Stefan and Jeremy who actually got the curse to stop
Tumblr media
In 5x04, Elena is taking Stefan through a crash-course of their relationship and Julie Plec said that Stefan saving Elena when her parents’ car went off Wickery Bridge was the beginning of their love story:
In my mind, Elena’s parents are dead. It was a human accident, and a human tragedy, and as we know, the night that Stefan pulled her out of the water and saved her life. That was kind of the beginning of their love story.
and him choosing to help Matt first in 3x22 solidified the beauty and transcendental nature of that love story:
‘What do you mean you don’t buy it? That’s the entire freakin foundation of Stefan and Elena’s relationship…that he respects her choice’. And this is her choice. And she’s saying to you ‘help him first’. I said to him, that your not leaving her to die, you’re just helping him first. And unfortunately, time has run out and then she dies before he can get back there but you know…it’s the beauty of the dynamic of your relationship and the fundamental thing that separates Damon and Elena from Stefan and Elena.
So it makes sense that they’re seeing it here:
Tumblr media
Just because for certain viewers the bridge is representative of Elena’s survivor’s  guilt doesn’t mean that it actually is.
In terms of the rest of it, it’s all in the master list, I can reblog some posts that directly with these arguments but one thing I always find really funny about:
“Elena having recurring thoughts of death and guilt that she didn’t die during the time she was with/loved Stefan is not a sign of being brought back to life”
besides this
Tumblr media
is, IF she thinks about death in seasons 1 and 2, it’s not because she isn’t healing from the accident, it’s because vampires and werewolves and originals are literally trying to kill her every other day
and does Elena allow them to? No. This apparently suicidal, guilt-ridden girl who only thinks about death and dying fights to live each and every time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is all to say, DErs never have new arguments, even when they think they do.

List 5 favourite shows (in no particular order) and answer questions accordingly.
Daredevil
Covert Affairs
New Girl
Parks and Rec
Supernatural
Who is your anti relationship in 2? Definitely Annie and Mcquaid. I couldn't stand it when they started dating each other.
How long have you watched 1? From the day it premiered on Netflix I started watching.
How did you become interested in 3? I had friends who watched it and then I finally gave in and watched it. I've loved it, and have rewatched it several times, ever since.
Who is your favourite actor in 4? Adam Scott
Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5? OMG making me choose between 3 of my faves! But I gotta go with Daredevil, ugh I just love Charlie Cox.
Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3? New Girl
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?  Leslie Knope because of how confident she is and she knows what she wants in life.
How would you kill off your favourite character in 5? Well if I have to I guess I could summon a demon to do it. It'd be okay anyway because in true Supernatural fashion they wouldn't be really dead. They'd come back to life in the next episode.
Would a 3/4 crossover work? I think it could be a possibility.
Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple. Matt and Marci maybe??
Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5? Ooo that's tough they're both really good!

John 3- Below are people of the Book dead Christians and Above twice-bo... John 3-  Below are people of the Book dead Christians and Above twice-born of the Holy spirit Christs. Holy spirit is common sense. https://youtu.be/rfQ2SGB0Oyc I visited that part of India and met a local Priest who told me that Saint Thomas and His Brethren were known as "Christs" and not Christians. The Portuguese Pope went there and told them only Jesus is Christ and you cannot call yourselves Christ. So, he burnt their books and made them run for the hills to hide from being killed. Further, the people of South India being True Hindus with their tribal identity intact, need not be baptised in water as John, the Baptist baptised the Jewish men of age who released that when you become a Jew outwardly physically, then you break your covenant with Abraham, an Ideal Adam. So, they came to John, the Baptist, the Cornerstone of the Temple ousted by the hypocritical blasphemer Temple Priests who were making them Jews outwardly of the physical self. John baptised them in the name of "Abraham" and Jesus in the name of his heavenly father "Yahweh".  He never baptised a woman, Gentile or a Samaritan because they were already faithful to their tribal fathers. The present legacy in the Churches was established by the Messianic Jews who keep the seven candles of the Menorah at the same level whilst in the Catholic Churches the Middle Candle of Elohim, our Supernatural Father of our "souls" is altogether missing and replaced with an icon signifying that Christ has not come yet in line with the orthodox Jews to keep them pleased. Or they kept their Anti-Christ Roots intact and no wonder the Anti-Christ Pope was killing the Apostles, I can tell you a lot as I hail from Punjab where the Second Coming of Jesus in the name of Satguru = Christ Nanak Dev Ji appeared in 1469. I know the names of the Five Husbands of the Samaritan Woman at well - John 4 but the men of dead letters worse than the Temple Priests would not like to know. She was Saint Photina and the Samaritans were a nation of Prophets who were whipmaster for the Jewish Rabbis but they hated them most. The 70 outer circle labourers that Jesus prepared for the ministry of John, the Baptist were baptising the Jewish men in water in the name of Abraham. They never baptised a woman, Gentile or a Samaritan. For this reason, also, Jesus had no woman Labourer but all men and a woman cannot teach but she can Preach the Gospel Truth as a Saint. The Samaritan Woman was Saint Photina. I will explain this in detail in a Youtube Video. Matt 12v43-45:- The Greatest hypocrites Messianic Jews are to be blamed for Jews hating Christians. https://youtu.be/FlFqaG70EPY How the Satanic Messianic Jews and the Kings and Emperors of Darkness Khatris killed the Lights. https://youtu.be/J23JsomH Holy spirit, common sense, shatters the fetters of the dead letters, the Holy Books. If we have One God, our Supernatural Father of our souls, then there should be one Faith. In Christianity, Jesus said One Fold called the Church of God headed by One Shepherd, our Bridegroom Christ Jesus/Christ = Satguru Nanak Dev Ji, the Second coming of Jesus. Solid Proof; This Golden Temple is of the same size as the Holiest of Holy that used to be in Jerusalem and its Curtain held the Secrets of the Oral Torah = His Word was rendered from the Top, the Temple High Priests, to the Bottom, the village Rabbis off you go – Luke 16v16; Law and Prophets were till John and thus, everyone makes a direct approach to God through His Word = Logo = SATGUR PARSAD. So, these hireling Dog-Collared Priests and Mullahs, cannot give your account to God as the Rabbis used to give at Passover.  Thus, Jesus was born and Jesus died on the Cross and rose on the Third Day and NOT CHRIST, THE TITLE. NAME: Hidebehind Cosmetics
LOCATION: Downtown (Amity Road)
Whether you’re looking for your standard everyday make-up or something fun and vibrant (the tourists love it), the poorly named Hidebehind Cosmetics has you covered. However, they don’t really care about any of that – it’s just hard to advertise a supernatural business. Hidden behind the regular products and brands is a store specializing in cosmetics and prosthetics for the supernatural. You want something for your selkie teeth or a way to liven up the ol’ zombie skin? Or heck, maybe you’re just a human who wants some anti-aging cream that really appears to work. They can help. Not all can afford the glamours, and others may simply be more comfortable without, so the store also aims to provide alternatives to magic. Sadly, some species don’t have much of a choice if they want to fit in with the humans.
The spellcasters who work here don’t usually judge, and do seem to have a fondness for their customers, especially the regular ones. Aside from Ashlyn, a witch who may or may not try to harvest parts from the non-human customers. She’s been covert about this so far.
If you see kids (or adults) walking around downtown with face paint, they probably got it done here. While not a source of revenue (they do it for free), it’s still a great source of advertisement and gets people – mostly tourists – in the door through word of mouth.
Not surprisingly, they offer some pretty awesome costume makeup looks. They pride themselves on creating some of the most realistic looking vampire teeth and a variety of claws. This makes them a huge hit at Halloween even if more than a few patrons have injured themselves or others with these sharp looks. Some things are simply worth it for the ‘Gram.
Some of their products have been known to work a little too well. While it’s all harmless for the most part, if you plan on using any of their long-lasting items make sure you’re happy having that look for at least a week. Their line of liquid-matte lipsticks is particularly impressive with how long it lasts and comes in a wide variety of colors.
All of their advertising really stresses the word “any”. Any skin type. Any blemishes. You name it. They really do mean any, but it’s become a bit of a joke with the locals who don’t know just how much they really mean it. If you apply this make-up without having any blemishes, it might just erase part of your face.
If you’re going for a Halloween makeover with one of their artists, don’t ask for an “ugly” witch look. Don’t do it.

Kol Mikaelson; Muse Info
Tumblr media
“And why would I do that? I like pretty little things with sharp tongues.”
Full Name; Kol Mikaelson Nickname; None Face Claim; Daniel Sharman Gender; Male Pronouns; He/Him Marital Status; Single Sexuality; Bisexual Age; 1000+ Date Of Birth; Unknown Occupation; Unknown Residence; New Orleans Species; Witch Family; Mikael (Father), Esther Mikaelson (Mother), Dahlia (Maternal Aunt), Freya Mikaelson (Older Sister), Finn Mikaelson (Older Brother),Elijah Mikaelson (Older Brother), Niklaus Mikaelson (Older Maternal Half-brother), Rebekah Mikaelson (Younger Sister), Henrik Mikaelson (Younger Brother), Hope Mikaelson (Niece) Verses; None Side Note; I will rewrite Kol’s Bio eventually ti fit into the world better since he didn’t go back to his vampire body and stayed in the human/witch body instead. Biography; Kol Mikaelson (Elder Futhark: ᚲᛟᛚ ᛗᛁᚲᚨᛖᛚᛋᛟᚾ) is a major recurring character on The Originals. He also had a recurring role in the third, fourth and fifth season of The Vampire Diaries, where he served as an antagonist and anti-hero. Kol is also the main protagonist of the short web series The Originals: The Awakening.
Kol is the third son of Mikael and Esther. He is the younger brother of Freya, Finn, Elijah and older brother of Rebekah and Henrik and the younger half-brother of Klaus. He is the uncle of Freya and Mathias' unborn son, Klaus and Hayley's daughter, Hope, and Freya and Keelin's son, Nik.
Throughout his life, Kol struggled emotionally with his status as the black sheep of the family, and the belief that his siblings considered him to be more of a nuisance than their own brother. He was shown to be rather spiteful and jealous over Marcel Gerard, whom he perceived was treated more like family than he ever was. As a result of this insecurity, Kol often lashed out violently which earned him a dangerous reputation and on occasion, the ire of his siblings. In reality, his bad behavior is revealed to be simple cries for attention.
During the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries, Kol feared the return of Silas and was adamant about stopping him. He antagonized the Mystic Falls Gang and at one point Elena Gilbert proposed a truce between them. However, the truce was really a setup to kill Kol and it ultimately led to his demise at the hands of Jeremy Gilbert in A View to a Kill. In the fifth season, Kol was seen on the Other Side as it was slowly collapsing due to Markos' emergence. He encountered Matt Donovan and expressed fear for himself and the other supernatural beings on the Other Side. Kol told Matt to warn everybody who was alive.
Kol escaped the destruction of The Other Side as seen in the second season of The Originals. His mother, Esther managed to resurrect him and place him into the body of a young witch named Kaleb Westphall. He temporarily aided his mother and his recently resurrected brother, Finn, but quickly followed his own agenda. He ended up pursuing a relationship with the young witch Davina Claire, and joined his brothers Klaus and Elijah, where he ultimately helped them defeat Esther and their father Mikael, once and for all. However, in retaliation for assisting his brothers in stopping their mother by turning her into a vampire, Finn hexed Kol with a deadly spell in Sanctuary. He consequently died for the second time in I Love You, Goodbye, surrounded by his family and girlfriend. Moments before Kol's death, Rebekah promised to bring Kol back.
While looking for ways to bring back Kol in Wild at Heart, Davina casted a suspension spell and poisoned herself in order to access the Ancestral Plane to see Kol and confirm if a spell The Strix gave her could actually resurrect him. Although the spell is an effective one, Kol tried to lie and say it wasn't because he was worried about the consequences of using it. As Davina is discovered and flees from the Ancestors' realm, she realizes Kol's attempt at deception for her protection. Kol holds the Ancestors off long enough for his girlfriend to escape.
In Heart Shaped Box, Davina uses a Hand of Glory to bring Kol forth from the Ancestral Plane in order to figure out the missing ingredient for the Sireline Unlinking Spell. He attempts to lie to her by saying that the spell is impossible to break, but she uses her intuition and logic to figure out that the missing ingredient is an unsired heart which Kol devastatingly confirms. After Kol draws magic from the Hand of Glory to knock her out in order to effectively put down the rest of the Sisters that were attempting to extract Hayley's heart, Davina wakes up a few hours later. She looks at the Hand of Glory and becomes upset that they have wasted so much time. She tearfully tells him that she loves him and shares a goodbye kiss with him before the candle blows out and Kol is sent back to the Ancestral Plane.
In A Streetcar Named Desire, Kol is successfully resurrected in his true form as an Original Vampire by Davina. In An Old Friend Calls, Kol tells Davina her spell brought him back how he was when he died in the body she resurrected, his true body, which was an Original Vampire. After she made him a daylight ring, Kol is reunited with all of his siblings and received a warm welcome from all his siblings except for his murderous brother Finn and Rebekah who was daggered for her own safety after being afflicted by the Cursed Stake.
In Behind the Black Horizon, it was revealed by Davina that the Ancestors had corrupted the spell that brought him back to life, causing him to want to rip out Davina's throat, making him slowly become more feral and to give in to his heightened bloodlust until he does. The more he resists killing Davina, the more Kol becomes savage and thirsty for blood to the point he was a mindless animal looking only to feed, beyond thought or reason. It was only after he killed Davina that a horrified Kol was released from the curse, and he was devastated for having unknowingly killed the love of his life.
In The Bloody Crown, after Marcel completed his transition into an Upgraded Original Vampire, he used his toxic werewolf bite on both Kol and Elijah as revenge for Davina's death from Elijah's betrayal, and for Kol having unwillingly killed Davina due to the Ancestors. A poisoned Freya saves Kol, Elijah, Rebekah, and herself by using the spell Dahlia cast to survive a thousand years, to put them all in a slumber in stasis to prevent the poisons from killing them until Hayley can find cures for them. They are linked to a neutralized Klaus' lifeforce, while their minds are in a Chambre de Chasse, to be with each other in peace until they awake.
In the fourth season, he is cured from the bite and heads to France with Rebekah. They return back to New Orleans after Elijah's temporary death and he finds that The Hollow has brought Davina back to life. When The Hollow possesses Hope, he and his siblings use themselves to separate the Hollow's spirit and he leaves for San Francisco. Seven years later, it is also revealed that he and Davina are now married.
Kol is a member of the Mikaelson Family and an unnamed Witch Family.

MATTHEW G. DONOVAN  ⁺ ⁽ ᵖᵒˢᵗ ˢᵉʳⁱᵉˢ ⁾
bonnie pushed back the hellfire from mystic falls back into the maxwell bell, back to hell itself, mystic falls was saved from it’s once prophecied complete annilation that once doomed our matt donovan from his demonic roots. he did not become the anti-christ like he was born for. having closed the hellmouth gate entirely, matt’s powers were ultimately severed from it’s source, thus making him weaker and lost most of his cambion abilities bare a weak few. his powers stemming from a mixture of his unique blood as well as a connection toa hellmouth itself. with cade dead, it is also revealed that he is not, the actual devil but instead, had been given that role as the king of hell whilst lucifer was freed to roam whenever he wanted. it is unclear if matt could regain his powers and resume his fate to become the anti-christ or next king of hell, but he has choses against it. rejecting predetermined ideas about his future. his mothers soul, returned to be damned by hell and his sister vicki, finally is allowed to find peace in the afterlife, having only been held in hell as something to hold against and manipulate matt. it is unclear now where lucifer is and if he is coming to meet matt himself.
after the gate closes, matt came to the realisation that mystic falls itself, was his own personal hell and he was actally, much happier away from his hometown despite feeling loyalty to a town that had only made him sad his entire life. with the death of tyler, matt cannot stand to be in mystic falls without his best friend and thus post series, he moves to persue a career in becoming a PI DECTIVE, to use the remaining gifts and his extensive gathered knowledge of the supernatural world, to help those in need so that never again, people would hopefully not feel the way he did when his sister first died and he didn’t believe her about vampires.
and thus, matt grows colder and distant to his friends, especially after stefan’s funeral. that was the last real time all of his friens were together. having moved across the states, now persuing his PI career, over the years, matt slowly started to visit mystic falls less and less. only for important ocassion’s such as lizzie and josie’s birthdays. though now having a perminant home in sanfransico, matt is dotted around the country on case by case calls or to offer his assitence in cases he suspects has supernatural orgin/basis.
⁺ ⁽ ˡᵉᵍᵃᶜⁱᵉˢ ⁾
when matt does decide to vist town, it’s usually because he’s someplace near home, visiting his step-mother and younger half-brother. matt also, has adopted a young teenager named nolan, who was left orphaned after one of his first few cases went seriously wrong. though very busy, matt has found solace in having someone he can call his family again having lost so much. in a lot of ways, his son’s own life parallels parts of his own and his best friend tyler’s and thus, couldn’t leave him. matt will sometime let nolan stay for short times at the salvatore school to mingle with other kids so he knows the distincition between good and bad supernatural creates.
matt, if he has the time, will also teach classes on detective work for students who are interested with the permission of the current headmaster. he is still very close with dorian also as they game online sometimes

An exploration of how we honor the dead in this compilation of haunting one-acts, ranging in tone and place, each one act explores a different way we interact with death, the beyond, and what’s in between

Decorum by Judd Lear Silverman and directed by Jonatha Long Frye - A spoiled, world-weary Lord of the Manor returns from his vacation to Egypt with a new lover, who happens to be a mummy. Chaos and jealousy ensue in this tale of love beyond time.
Blithe Seance by Eugene Grygo and directed by Rachael Langton - Theo is moving to New York to join the dot com revolution. But first he must face his past with the help of an eccentric medium in a tale of love and forgiveness.
The Questioning by Michael Hagins & directed by Anel Carmona - When gunshots ring out at a protest on the Brooklyn College campus, police think an anti-BLM janitor may have been responsible. But there may be another avenging--more supernatural--force at work.
Memento Mori by Donna Latham & directed by Kati Frazier - While privately grieving the loss of her lover, Lucretia tries to bring dignity and honor to an unknown corpse left at her doorstep through the art of post-mortem photography. But can the dead offer solace to the living?

REVIEW: HERE, BETWEEN, AND BEYOND is a variety of five tales dealing with death and curated by an Aztec god of the underworld and her minions, who assist in the prop transitions for each tale. Staged in the Kraine Theater, a small black box off-off Broadway theater in the East Village, I had not attended a performance there since before the pandemic and they’ve done an excellent job with some renovations and upgrades, but still has that community theater charm.
The narrator/Mickey segments provide comic relief and a brief introduction to each piece. There are a few political zingers, but most of the writing is brief and limited. The tales are set in a variety of periods. Some are more serious than others, and only Michael Hagins’ “The Questioning” lacks any lighter moments given the subject matter. Given my familiarity with the genre, I would not say these tales were cliched, but they held no surprises for me. I felt that the writers did not have a lot of experience working in the genre and that they were trying to adapt the stories they wanted to tell to it. I found Donna Latham’s “Memento Mori,” a simple ghost story, the most interesting. There are some nice props to accent the performances, but the use of projections telegraphed the story’s reveal for me. The dialogue felt a bit rough and while not terrible, it could have benefited from a bit more time being workshopped and tweaked.
Given the independence of the production the performances were good. The actors were not miked and some were better at projecting than others. It is a small stage so there is not a lot of space for the performances to cover. Actress Luvia Almanza as Mickey has a broad role of engaging the audience to deliver public service announcements and guide them through the production. She has fun with it and feels more like a Disney tour guide than an ancient Aztec god with issues. Overall, there is a lot of sitting, some pieces more than others, such as “Blithe Seance” by Eugene Grygo that mostly takes place around a table. There are only a couple of performers who take on more than one role and I think it might have been a more energetic production if there were more multiple roles.
The props and costumes nicely accentuated the pieces. The lighting was fine and there were some effective sound and musical cues. There is an air unit in the theater. I can understand the need to run it during the performance but it was a tad loud and created this annoying white noise.
During the early 80’s I had a group of friends who were aspiring actors and were frequently involved with off-off broadway productions. So I have a soft spot for independent theater. HERE, BETWEEN, AND BEYOND is a vanilla, non offensive Halloween treat that’s a fun way to get your seasonal scare on. A hard working ensemble cast is the perfect reason to get off the couch and out of your dwelling to join a live audience and experience some theater. Heck, they have a bar in the theater so you could have a cold one to enhance your viewing experience.
HERE, BETWEEN, AND BEYOND is part of the FRIGID NY Days of the Dead Festival. Performances run Saturday, October 21 at 7pm and Monday, October 23 at 9:30pm  at The Kraine Theater at 85 E 4th St, New York, NY 10003. Tickets are $25 for in person and $20 for streaming, and can be purchased at this LINK.

Meeting with Matt, need to talk about how grateful I am to have him as a supervisor. Even when I struggle to explain my interests and intentions he always seems to understand exactly what I’m trying to say, and more. He’s introduced me to so many new concepts and topics that I would have never even considered myself, but I realize they are what I’ve been needing this whole time. Thanks Matt for making this so much more than what it could have been (:
Notes from meeting:
Energy and Architecture- documentary to watch, an aspect of my board-game that could be used to emphasize certain ideas. Architecture as a vessel for divinity, God is known as the ‘architect of the universe’, becoming the architect, the dungeon master, of my game.
Occultism definition: Category of esoteric supernatural beliefs and practices which generally fall outside the scope of organized religion and science, encompassing phenomena involving otherworldly agency, such as magic and mysticism and their varied spells.
Stargate series- the portals and portal devices
Watcher realm- Union Jack symbolism representing concentrated energy
Minecraft- grids, maps, terrains, journeys, travelling far distances in search of the perfect base area. Materials of the earth, different ways of sourcing and culminating resources
Cargo- Cults: The Gods must be Crazy (film series to watch)
The Men in Black- extraterrestrial life forms
Spirituality, religion, ritual: aspects that can be built into the game
The Century of the Self- documentary from Adam Curtis on psychoanalysts Sigmund and Anna Freud- desires, propaganda, marketing. Emotive side of advertising, visual seduction, engagement
H.R Giger- science fiction spaces
Marvel Franchise: Thor- the archetypal villian character, the embodiment of the devil and anti-christ- Loki, God of Mischief. Supervillian to anti-hero story. Alienation, antagonism towards Thor in particular.
Esoteric witchcraft and knowledge. Hidden, exclusive knowledge- initiations, must be ‘chosen’ in some sense to attain this knowledge. Invitations, group that illuminate you in some way.
Esoteric conspiracies in popular culture.
Chance- Ouija boards, and Luck- assocations to Lucifer
Gaining the favour of the Gods- connections with the divine
Activation of the imagination. Metaphysical, spiritual realm of the conscience
Connecting oneself with the spiritual realm to gain power- for the good or bad- case of Hitler
Freemasons and the Knight’s Templer: alchemy, mathematics, initiations, rituals, exclusivity, illumination. Apprentice, Fellowcraft, Master, hierarchy of ranks within this organization
Architecture and divinity. Two pillars of King Solomon, symbols of free masonry and religion. Double walled buildings- secretive containment
Freemasonry definition: One of the world's oldest and largest fraternal (brotherhood) societies. It provides a code of living in today's society based on moral and ethical standards. Freemasonry is an organisation of men who strive to live by the fundamental principles of integrity, goodwill and charity.
Freemason rituals- Masonic handshake- based on one’s rank within the organization
Matthew Barney ‘Cremaster Cycle’- references to apprenticeship
Norman Mailer, author: religion and spirituality, occultism, paranormal
Sports and esoteric ritual. Pop culture. Arenas. Sports alignment with religious rituals
One’s standing in relation to ‘truth’. Impacts how you understand your own reality.
Midyear exhibition setting a foundation for future research
The Matrix hallway (The Back Doors)- a kind of shortcut hyperlinking system, a walkway into different realms.
Was reading more into this ^ The Matrix. I’ve never seen the films but I’m aware of its significance within the genre of science fiction, and artificial intelligence, which are driving themes in my project. The scene where The Architect offers Neo an ultimatum, a choice between two doors. And of course the scene with the red and blue pill. This interaction where the protagonist is given an ultimatum has been used in ancient mythologies and storytelling, as well as in popular culture. The Faustian bargain- choice between two doors, or two pathways. Decisions and consequences. Fate and fortune.
Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation, and Plato’s Allegory of The Cave
The Oracle of Delphi in Greece- perceived to be the naval of the earth in Greek mythology. Marked by the Omphalos, a stone monument which was believed to be placed by Zeus in his attempt to find the center of the world. Oracle as a consultant of important decisions, and cryptic prophecies. Ancient sacred precinct. The phrase “Know Thyself” was inscribed on the walls of the Oracle’s temple, suggesting that true wisdom lies in recognizing one’s own ignorance. Higher self.
^ Delphi is also a very special place for me because I had the opportunity to go there for a classical studies trip in high school. I had never considered myself a spiritual person, but I had a profound experience in Delphi that I have not experienced since. The air smelt like pine, honey, and olives, it was so serene and peaceful and it did feel like there was some greater presence there. I think that these sort of moments come rarely, but when they do they are so enchanting and memorable.
I had already decided that the Victim’s Realm will be a rendition of Delphi. That location is so important to me that I want it to be represented in my game.
