Can’t believe its been 4 years since these turtles graced my TV screen at the ripe age of 11. 

Coming across Rise for the first time felt magical. I've never seen anything like it before, or at least, not on an animated series on TV. The quality of the animation, the art style, the new cast voicing the turtles I grew up with, the new interpretation, sure it was different but it was just the coolest thing ever to me at the time.

I didn't have access to the internet or social media at the time, so my love for this show was pure and unconditional.

Rise completely changed my view on what animation as a medium could do, especially for a serial TV show. It inspired me to keep working harder, both in terms of its writing style and its visual presentation. Sure I wasn't very good at it, but it set an example for me. Especially at the time when I was so engrossed in wanting to make my own animated TV series with my own original characters.

Outside of inspiration, it was also a source of comfort. The turtles felt like my friends, and their adventures were always so entertaining that I imagined myself being there alongside them. I knew that they were always there when I was having a bad day, I'd just turn on the TV, hope Rise was on, and let all my problems fade away.

As a queer and neurodivergent kid who always felt isolated and out of place, The turtles helped me feel less alone. I knew they wouldn't judge me for being weird or different because they were weird and different in their own ways too.

Sure you could point out the fact that it was because they were mutated turtles to be the weird trait, but to me, it felt more about what was on the inside.

The world will see mutants first, and beings with thoughts and feelings second.

Yet even after society shuns you, endangering you for what you are,

You will find joy and solace with your kin.

(also as I'm writing this out I am realizing that while both posts were titled the same way, it looks like they had different question prompts??? So I'm just gonna combine the two)

Currently Reading: Three things! In terms of actual books, I've been slowly making my way through the Riordanverse since my university did The Lightning Thief in my second year (first school in my state to do it once the rights were released!) since I somehow never got into Percy Jackson as a kid, and I'm currently on Son of Neptune. I'm also one like my third or fourth re-read of Eurydice by Sara Ruhl, since that's the play I'm designing the costumes for for my senior project. And in terms of fanfic, I woke up to a notification about this yesterday and Actually Screeched.

Last Song: Dial Drunk by Noah Kahan (ft. Post Malone), which was a bit of an accident. I use siri to request music while I'm driving and I asked for Dial Drunk and was singing along until I got jumpscared by the slight difference before Post Malone's verse. Although if you look at my spotify, the ROTPL album has been on repeat for weeks.

Currently Watching (Series): I've been hyperfixated on ROTPL and have watched it over a dozen times at this point, which is probably not healthy, so I put on NCIS last night for background noise while I ate dinner and accidentally watched like six episodes.

Currently Watching (Movie): Saw the Barbie movie the night before the actual opening with my coworkers (We don't cross picket lines people! I was not asked nor invited by any company, and I paid full price for my ticket. There's a one-screen theatre in the town where I'm doing summer stock, this relic from the 50's, and they were able to get access to the film a day early and did a special first come first serve premiere.) and we all sobbed the entire way through.

Current Obsession: Rise of the Pink Ladies. Full stop. I'd seen clips of it when it first aired in April but I was iffy on it in spite of how good it looked. Like most, I'm a little tired of reboots and remakes, and while I did clock Cynthia as being queer within two seconds, (I believe my exact words were "That's either a very butch lesbian or the eggiest egg to ever egg.") I was Convinced it was a queerbait situation. Plus I was nearing finals and didn't have time to get into a new show. Why representation is important- a rant

So, as a kid, I constantly felt off. People would tell me that my name was "pretty" and it felt weird to me. I was put off by being called "daughter" or "little girl" or "princess" but I never could figure out why. My mom called me her little tomboy and that's what I assumed I was- a tomboy. I liked dressing up for important events (like picking up my brother from the airport), but that was it.

Getting older, but not by much, I started hating how I looked and felt. I cut my hair really short, much to the dismay of my mother. When I went to school the next day, people in class called me a boy- and I didn't see anything wrong or offensive about it.

It was sixth grade when I learned. This kid I barely tolerated, and only because we had been friends since kindergarten, told me they were pansexual and genderfluid. I asked them what they were talking about, and they opened up this whole world. I did so much research, and at first, I said I was a straight ally.

As I did more research, I began identifying as pansexual. I had noticed my attractions and started identifying accordingly- but something still bothered me. I thought this new identity would fix everything, yet it fixed nothing.

As I explored my attraction, I tried out different sexual and romantic labels, not quite grasping at the concept. It took me a while to say "hey, maybe its my gender" and exploring I went.

I tried demigirl, she/they, but that didn't feel right at all. I still hated my name, the word girl, and the pronouns she. I changed my name, started identifying as demigender, and used they/them. It felt better, but still not right. I simply could not figure it out.

I was extremely frustrated and dealing with things in my personal life. I was just so upset that I could not seem to find out my own goddamn gender. My friends all seemed so sure that they knew what they were that I felt like I couldn't trouble them with this.

I decided to begin going by he/they and identifying as a demiboy. It felt better, but still not right. I began to ask if I may be genderfluid or something, but being called a girl just never felt right to me. It was then I realized that I may just be a guy. Used he/him and it felt great, but surprise surprise, the name I came up with because of a meme wasn't doing it for me. It didn't feel as bad as my deadname, but still not right.

It wasn't until one night, I was up late texting my friend, when they said I looked like a Jonathan. I laughed it off and didn't really say anything about it until later. The name flooded my mind and I really wanted to be called it, so I hopped onto Stardew Valley and changed my character's name to Jonathan. Walking around and being called Jonathan just felt extremely right to me, so that's what I started putting everywhere.

Now, of course, while this gender crisis was going on, there was still the issue of my sexuality. It went from pansexual to lesbian to bisexual to abrosexual and just all over the place. For a while, I identified as omni, but that didn't fit quite right either, but neither did just "gay". So, I decided that, hey, sexuality is fluid and confusing, so I'll just say I'm queer.

It was only after coming out that I was recommended shows and books with LGBTQ+ content. The one show I did watch that had it, Steven Universe, was so subtle at the time that I didn't understand it until later. However, if I had known about shows like Dead End Paranormal Park, The Owl House, ect., figuring out all this stuff may have been so much easier.

So if you think these shows will turn your kid gay, please look past your prejudice. Everyone should question their identity at some point- whether it sticks or not doesn't matter. What does matter is that your kid feels comfortable in their own skin and doesn't have to spend their childhoods hating themself for feeling weird or wrong.

So yes, representation is important.

Im going to try and explain my gender to the 0 people who are paying attention to this blog, because I deserve to ramble a little bit I think

For context I'm afab. I've pretty much always known I wasn't a man, which is a big part of why it took me so long to question my gender at all. I specifically remember seeing the term transmasc online when I was first discovering queer terms and being like "hmm I wonder if that could be me" and then looking it up and seeing it listed as a synonym for trans man and just being like "oh ok then guess im still cis". I didn't start seriously questioning until like. April of this year I think

I don't know why it took me so long to consider the idea of being nonbinary, but it was actually a conversation with some of my trans friends that made me consider it. I remember saying something like "I may be cis but I'd trade my female body for a completely neutral one in a heartbeat" and one of my friends was like "r u sure ur cis lmao". Silly stuff. My whole thing was like, I want a body that looks like nothing, that I can make look like anything. If I want to wear mens' clothes I don't want boobs that get in the way of that. But I want to be able to wear a dress and not have like, idk body hair and a dick getting in the way of that. And I said stuff to my friends like, I don't rly want hormones but Id wear a binder to look more neutral, Id voice train and get my voice deeper, that makes sense right

My biggest hangup was on pronouns, because I was REALLY proud of being a she/her. But I decided, hey I can't knock they/them until I try it right? So I proposed a they/them test for a week, and never looked back lmao. I went through a phase of absolutely despising she/her for a month or two, but I've since made up with the pronoun set as you can see in my bio. She/her and I are good friends now we've settled our differences <3

Putting the rest under a cut for the sake of my 2 followers' TLs not being flooded because I still have much to say

My gender is very multifaceted, but in the physical realm you could call me transmasc. It took me a while to realize but I hate my boobs (or rather, took me a while to realize that disliking your boobs is not normal lmfao), to the point where I very quickly went from "eh I might get a binder for some outfits" to "I NEED to get top surgery". I'm also not a fan of my hips and ass, never have been but I don't think there's much I can do about that one. I also have solid evidence for vocal dysphoria, in that I can remember a specific time as a kid where I learned that your voice sounds deeper to you than it does to other people because of the way you hear it through your skull. This disappointed me GREATLY because I always prided myself on the idea that I had a boyish voice. I do think I'd like to train my voice lower, if possible. Lastly for physical dysphoria I've always had a thing about my height, but I mostly learned to ignore it since boys LOVE to make fun of girls (and other boys I suppose) for their height. I learned to shut it out and make fun of myself as well as a coping mechanism, because it really did and always has bugged me. But what can I do, I've 5 foot even at 19 years old and it doesn't seem to be changing any time soon.

As for my internal experience of gender...I think this low-quality ms paint chart will explain it best.

Basically my gender exists on two simultaneous sliding scales--one of them a distinctly gendered outside-of-binary gender that I'm choosing to call neutrois, because it's an existing term that works for what I'm talking about. The other gender is a female-aligned gender that is distinct from cisgender femininity but is still feminine in nature, which I am choosing to call femme because I hate the words woman and girl and female in relation to my own gender. I can experience both of these scales at maximum intensity--bigendered as both neutrois and femme at the same time--or minimum intensity--essentially agendered, no distinct experience of gender either way--OR I can be some strange combination of these, such as minimum femme and maximum neutrois or half neutrois and full femme, etc. I've found that the strength of ANY gender fluctuates over longer periods of time, in that I tend to feel low amounts of gender for a period of about two weeks, followed by higher feelings of gender for about two weeks, during which the relation of femme to neutrois fluctuates on a daily basis.

As for labels, the best way I can think to describe this is bigenderflux, and also demigirl (or demifemme, as I prefer to call it). But for obvious reasons I usually just call myself nonbinary. I also like terms like librafemme, describing the property of being both agender and feminine, and juxera, describing the property of being feminine aligned in a way that is different from the way cis women are feminine. But it's...hard to label.

The funny thing about this is that it doesn't really line up with my gender expression much at all. There are days that I'm feeling fully agender or fully neutrois, and am strangely in the mood to wear a dress. Or days that I'm feeling mostly femme and want to present like a boy. So realistically my gender doesn't really have any bearing on anything at all. But I like charting it, because a few months ago if I'd woken up feeling feminine I would have spiraled into a panic about how I must be faking being trans. But this allows me to understand myself and predict how I'll feel so I know that when I feel a certain way, that's normal and part of who I am.

Hello lovely! i really understand this so much. i think that peoples' reactions to their kids being queer are very complex, and there are a lot more shades than just acceptance and rejection. and the fear that if you come out these people you've known your whole life will suddenly look at you differently, even if they don't kick you out of the house, or, you know, hate you, knowing that you might never be just you again. but always you + your sexuality. is a hard thing to deal with.

i'm not out to my parents. for a variety of reasons. a lot of which have more to do with my siblings than my parents (my family is a little complicated). but my point is mostly that i really get where you're coming from.

i don't think, for the record, that Monty is a bad person or a bad dad. i think he's just a person who loves his son very much and who has only ever been presented with the negative aspects of queerness. and that makes the idea that his son is queer very scary for him. and something he doesn't know how to handle and never thought he would have to.

The inherent queerness of Stranger Things by me

Eddie Munson is a gay man and I will not hear anything to the contrary.

Reason number one: look at him!!! That’s a gay man!! 

Reason number two: he’s flagging. Flagging is a specific part of gay culture (specifically with men and specifically back then, though it is still used today) that was meant mainly for cruising and hookups. Different colored bandannas mean different things, as do which pocket they’re in. For example: a black handkerchief/bandanna means S&M, if it’s in the back LEFT pocket, the person is a top/dom, if it’s in the back RIGHT pocket, the person is a bottom/sub. Eddie has his bandanna in the back LEFT and it’s black. To further prove this point, he has handcuffs hanging up on his wall. He also wears a belt with a handcuff buckle. (Also look at the way he’s standing!!! That’s not a straight man!!!)

Reason number three: his music choices. 80s metal has a tendency to be very camp, very flamboyant, and very over the top. With the hair, makeup, outfits, it’s all very gay. One of his favorite artists is Judas Priest, whose lead singer is a gay man!! The aesthetic of a lot of metal bands back then was very similar to the style and aesthetic you’d seen in leather clubs at the time (look up Tom of Finland), continuing to play into reason number 2.

REASON FOUR: the way he interacts with Steve is so unbelievably NOT heterosexual I can’t even make it up. He literally looks at him at point after hot wiring a car and says “Harrington’s got her, don’t you big boy?” With the flirtiest look anyone has ever seen. He does this very frequently too. Planning to go to the War Zone, pinning him to a wall with a bottle against his throat??? SUPER gay!! Before the big battle at the end of the season he kind of pulls Steve away from his group and does a little like “oh shit it’s now or never, it’s time to confess my feelings” look before saying “make him pay.” It turned out to be never because he then dies but that is beside the point. It would have been the perfect moment for a kiss but the Duffer brothers are cowards.

And the overarching reason for all of this: Stranger Things is a show about freaks and outcasts, it makes sense that there would be a large amount of queer characters. Also, i like it.

I know I’m still young (I’m 21) and still have so much time but I can’t help but feel insecure about the fact that I’ve never kiss/dated anyone, or even really flirted with anyone. I realized I was gay two years before Covid when I was still in school but I transferred to online classes so I never really got to meet anyone. Then Covid hit as I was graduating and becoming an adult and idk. I just have a fear that my inexperience will be a turn off somehow. That a femme wouldn’t wanna “hold my hand” while I learned how to be in a relationship. Especially as a Butch, I feel like there’s already so many things expected of me (especially a lot of heteronormative things) and that being inexperienced is like a double whammy. oh goodness, thank you for being here, i’m giving you a big hug!! 🫂💖💗 you are absolutely not alone, the ongoing pandemic has taken so much from all of us, on different levels. and for butchfemme folks this is compounded by the fact that many of us are late bloomers, because as kids/teens we don’t get to see ourselves represented, we aren’t supported in our sexuality and our preferred expression and our butchfemme-ness, not even in general queer spaces. we often don’t see each other and don’t know what romance or dating could look like until we are much older than the typical starting point. i think you’ll find that a lot of femmes in your age bracket are in a similar position!! and there are many people who aren’t bothered in the least by a partner’s lack of experience, who will see the beauty in getting to share in those first-times with you, and will treat you with kindness and patience and respect. 💞 accept absolutely nothing less than that. i agree, it’s infuriating to see the weird standards/expectations butches get held to, but there are people who don’t subscribe to that nonsense and who will make space for you to show up exactly as you are!!!

not really a hot take but what are your thoughts/headcanons for wolfstar only admitting their feelings and/or getting together after azkaban

MY THOUGHTS ARE THAT THIS IS MY FAVORITE VERSION OF WOLFSTAR.

We all already know that I'm not really interested in them at Hogwarts or during the First War. They're too young and I don't care. But during the canon years, when they're in their 30s? YES that is the best version of Wolfstar. Characters are only interesting to me when they are full adults, apologies to the twenty-something crowd.

I think this could happen many different ways! Maybe Sirius doesn't know that he's queer--he always thought that he was straight at school, and then after he was focused on the war and his friends dying and sexuality sort of took a back seat to all of that. Maybe it's not until he's stuck in Grimmauld with Remus during OOTP that he starts to realize he's not as straight as he once thought.

Maybe they both knew they were queer but they always dated other boys at school--which is fine! Sirius and Remus are allowed to have other loves who are not each other, and who are important to them! I'm sick of fics where the two of them are jealous over each other lmao, you don't own someone just because you have a crush on them. Actually, I love the idea of them never having a crush on each other as kids and young adults! And then in their 30s, they're both like "wait...............you're kind of attractive actually."

I think it happens during Sirius’s birthday in 1995. He and Remus are alone at Grimmauld, and while Sirius is miserable being stuck in the house and missing Harry, he’s glad to at least have his oldest/closest friend with him. I think Remus does what he can to make the day special for Sirius--maybe bakes him something of Effie Potter’s that he’d always liked, though Remus is shit at baking and it comes out terribly. Sirius eats it anyway, because Remus had tried and that means more than anything. Remus doesn’t have any money for a present, but maybe he found a box of James and Lily’s things he’s been keeping all these years, or a box of Sirius’s old things, or maybe they sit together with a photo album and Remus describes some memories to Sirius that he forgot b/c of the Dementors. And then, idk, I think at one point Sirius would just go for it and lean over and kiss Remus, and they both would be like oh.

And then when the school year ends Harry runs away from the Dursleys and goes to live with his gay uncles the end.

I've been queer since before I was born.

When the doctors couldn't tell my parents what sex they thought I would be, when no one knew until the day I was born. And then they called me "girl".

I was queer when I was six, and didn't care about the things my mom thought I should. When I was too busy reading to worry about boys vs girls or anything beyond the next story.

I was queer when I was eleven and tucked my hair into my cap. When I asked my dad if he thought I looked like a boy, and when I felt upset when he said no. When I kept doing it, to the point that my mom made a rule that I couldn't wear my cap in the house.

I was queer when I was twelve and couldn't relate to other girls my age talking about different boys each week. When I'd been thinking of the same boy for years on end.

I was queer when I was 14 and a half, hiding in my closet reading the book club section in the back of my mom's edition of "Frankenstein". When I read how Shelley's parents didn't constrict or even care about her sex life. When I felt a longing feeling for that, before I quickly buried the emotion and slammed the book shut.

I was queer when I first got my phone at sixteen and a half, when I first read the terms "Gay", "Lesbian", "Trans", "Nonbinary" and "Bi". When my Puritanical upbringing screamed that it was wrong, and yet I kept coming back to the same memes.

I was queer when I made my Discord account, a few weeks before my 18th birthday. When I actually met other queer people through various servers, and began to learn more about the community.

I was queer when I was 18 and made my tumblr account. This Tumblr account. When I started digging into my own weird sexuality. When I discovered I was demisexual, and later, demiromantic.

I was queer when I shed my old name and nicknames due to panic. When I thought my dad would find out I used an even slightly different name online. When, for some reason, I decided to choose something completely different. When I finally chose "Nyx". When the people I shared my new name asked if there were other reasons for the name change, and when I said "No".

I was queer summer of last year when I asked my best friend if there was such a thing as gender envy over yourself. When they asked if I had something to share. When I said "No" again. And when I came back a few weeks later with a fire in my heart as I said that apparently there was. When I said I was a demigirl.

I was queer when I realized that I was equally okay with potentially being in monamorous or polyamorous relationships. When I thought back to when I was a kid watching tv shows and sometimes having more than one crush in a show.

And I was queer when I realized that label didn't fit me anymore, just a few months ago. When nothing else really changed but I started branching out more with the pronouns to a few people.

And I'm queer now, thinking back on my life so far, wondering how I never picked up on it. How I managed to be so wonderfully queer and not have it stomped out of me. And how it's possible that I might continue to have a wonderfully queer life.

Alright kids. I spent 24 straight hours watching RWRB on loop (not kidding). And the only reason it wasn't more was because my dog decided to lay on the remote and turn the TV off late last night. She got glared at rather harshly for all of 3 seconds before my rational brain kicked in and told me, "Yes, Meg, you do actually need to sleep. You are closer to 40 than 20."

So with that, as I once again rewatch the RWRB movie, let's have some thoughts on book to movie adaptations from a fandom grandma, shall we?

First, Casey's book is beloved by so many and for all the right reasons. They gave us an iconically beautiful and unapologetic queer love story with characters that you love, get frustrated with, laugh both at and with, cheer for, and roll your eyes at as they stumble around figuring out this whole queer-in-the-public-eye thing and I don't care who you are, I'd imagine that's going to be tough for any public figure at any age.

Casey also gives us fleshed out and sometimes interwoven storylines with June, Nora, Pez, Luna, Bea, et al. Because writing allows for that to develop. There's no time or page limit on a book. The only limit to the book is the writer's imagination. It's an artistic medium that allows for more intricacies and interactions between the various characters (looking at Alex and Ellen and the PowerPoint, and Alex and Bea and "I love him on purpose").

I loved the book first, and I will continue to love the book above all else.

But book to movie adaptations are never going to be the same. They simply can't be the same. They have a finite amount of time to fill. They can't develop intricate storylines, which is why we see no June, no Luna, little of Percy, Alex's parents being married instead of divorced, nothing on Bea's addiction, and why we have little bastards like Miguel to still fill the main event that brings both Alex and Henry out into the public as their true, authentic selves.

The best book to movie adaptations are those that stay true to the plot. It's going to be faster paced because there's 2-2.5 hours in which to tell the story and all the main events have to be hit in that time. It's why we see the texting montage, and why the emails are done via voice over.

They honor the characters by not only keeping them as they are in the books, but in doing right by them as well. That includes casting the right people, and Taylor and Nick were far and away the best Alex and Henry.

Any creator who has ever created anything based on a book, movie, TV series, video game, etc. knows that when you take something that is already out there, you put your vision to the story. And that's what Matthew did with the movie. He made it his love letter to Henry and Alex, and Henry and Alex only. And while he surely had input from Casey, ultimately it was his vision that had to be realized in the movie.

Movie adaptations can also give you some wonderful added moments. And here we get to see Henry's struggle as well as Alex's. Because movies can be told from different points of view, even if the source material isn't. Ellen's powerpoint wasn't included, but it was referenced and that is just as important.

So many moments, from Alex and Henry's first kiss, to the conversation with Alex's dad, to Henry's soliloquy to Alex in the middle of the night at KP are still pulled word-for-word straight from the book.

We may not have "I love him on purpose." But we do have, "I'll break the sound barrier for you."

We don't get "Your Song" but we do get "Can't Help Falling in Love" and both are equally appropriate for what Alex and Henry have.

We get to keep, "history huh? Bet we could make some."

And we get to see Henry fight for himself and question why the established norms of a 21st century monarchy need to continue the way they've always been, rather than have his mum swoop in and save the day. And that is fucking brilliant character growth my friends.

No movie is ever going to be a scene by scene rehash of a book, no matter how beloved it is, and no matter how enthusiastically all of us shout that we would absolutely sit for a 10 hour movie of every little thing TYVM. But as long as it is there to be an ode to the original, to compliment it, then that's all you can ask for. And it's all you should ask for.

I realize I don't talk about my identity enough to my own friends, considering that I do go by a specific label personally, just that I use non-binary as an umbrella term which due to popularity and knowledge of compared to me, agender, it makes it easier to explain.

Like, imagine having to explain to about 99% of society or more that is based on gender that you don't have that, and what that experience is.

For me, I would say as a kid, while I wouldn't say agendered, I would say that I was just a person, that if anything my gender at the minimum was just what you call me. And well, I guess teachers didn't understand that because my brain was like "boy or girl? my name is not boy or girl." Or with how cisgendered stuff revolves gender around colors, like pink or blue, I just simply said I'd prefer to be able to see all colors, considering that teachers I had would have all the colors of the alphabet and they were nice to look at and match in my brain. Definitely didn't say it like this though, too much word for little me, probably just said "umm.... what?" and never got around to answering it lol.

Even now I find myself differing from views of family members heavily about basic stuff like buying clothes, soaps, bathing supplies and hair. They see divided sections between men and women, I see fabric made to show how we want to look, I smell that some soaps and bathing supplies are nicer, and some feel better for the skin then others. For hair men must have buzzcuts, women must have long hair, but it's just hair, why police stuff like that I would think, why is it so important that I shouldn't grow it out.

This is a long rant in the middle of the night, I am almost finished ranting I'd say....

But yeah, for those if you who don't know, agender can be broken down, where a means in a sense a lack of, and gender being well gender. A simplified explanation but that's because in a way nothing when it comes to gender can ever be simple, the best thing to that is queer, and that term gives power, it often is great for those who don't want to be defined and I would love to be like those kinds of people but even though almost every part of me says no to everything society is made up to be around I still want a good term, a good example of my exact emotion and how I feel so I can grasp on to the world and not be thrown off so easily at a slight turn of thought. It feels like so much force hits when terms don't fit just right when you need them too.

I guess I should also say, hi, you may call me AceofHearths, I am aromantic, asexual, and agendered, I use non binary as the main term but in a way it fits well enough to where I keep it as apart of me as well.
