unsure if my ask went thru bc i didnt see the popup that said it sended over so i’m typing it out again
i NEEED NEEDD a tutorial on how you draw & design mechs bc the way you draw them is literally perfection in every way. this is from an anon who wants to make mech ocs but is unsure where to start theyre so complicated to design
dusting off my tutorial brain
Tumblr media
my style of mech is very influenced by transformers (mix of different continuities and tf artists that I like) so I look at a lot of characters for inspiration
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a lot of stuff you could add to it too like vents, pipes, antennas, fins, wires, joints, etc..

A few more 1st Sword of Light mechs are on the way but I was especially pleased with how this Grand Dragon turned out! I intend to use this as a company commander but because I already have a 1SoL Dragon I had to break the all red scheme and give it a little something to distinguish the two on the field.

It's a bit sketchy but I'm pleased with how the cherry blossom wrap on the PPC turned out.

<Altas Frame>
Here comes the frame for all Type Atlas Units, while there are minor differences between each of them but not too far away from this basic assembles.
Please watch tutorial videos in my YouTube channel to discover the pieces I use and step by step building process for this MOC.

A quick and dirty guide on the method I use to draw Mecha and robots. If this garners enough interest I may make a couple of follow up guides, perhaps on common components or picking apart a machine I've drawn previously. Open to suggestions.
And props to @sinnabunii for activating the Mecha neuron, I am excited to see what you do with this.

Did a little photo tutorial for the chrome effect cockpits. It's easier than it looks, but harder than it should be. I wouldn't recommend it for small ones, but large bubble cockpits like this looks pretty nice with it. You could probably do other sky colors for alien worlds too

I really love how you do bright (glowing?) neon light in your drawings! Do u have any tips on how to do it?
great question! ^^
What I typically do, especially for mech, is plan on the colors before hand, and try to find one's that would work well with them.
Here's where I started out on my sketch for what I was wanting.
Tumblr media
Then, I added rough colors, and made the lineart darker.
Tumblr media
Then, I merged all of them together and started rendering, adding multiply layers and shading to accentuate the dark before any light was introduced.
Tumblr media
Then, I adder more multiply layers and add layers to fully render it all
Tumblr media
Overall, my advice is to build. Make sure to have a basic concept, but to develop the environment before getting to the good stuff.

watching streamers play ac6 and STRUGGLE with the lock on mechanic makes me feel better cuz i dont think figured it out until mid-fight with balteus.
Its such a useful mechanic and i feel the tutorial doesnt really effectively tell you How it works. Nor does it really train you to not move ur thumbstick like At All so you dont break the lock on.

How To Paint: Canopy Glass Pt. 3
After a catastrophic absence (I was taking care of a very nice but grabby dog) the series is back! So far we've done cockpits an easy way with normal paint and an easy way with contrast paint. This time around, we'll be looking at the way I do some of my more complex colored cockpits. I apologize for some of the photography on this one- not all of the steps were properly recorded.
Paints I used:
Tumblr media
For the Starslayer I chose to go with a orange/yellow tint for the glass, however you can easily adapt this to any dark -> bright paint gradient you like. Make sure your darkest color is something neutral- I usually like deep browns for hot colors and a deep sea green like incubi darkness for cool colors.
Army Painter Matt White (whit)
Citadel Yriel Yellow (bright yellow)
Citadel Trollslayer Orange (bright orange)
Citadel Ratskin Flesh (orange)
Citadel Mournfang Brown (brown)
Citadel Dryad Bark (dark brown)
Citadel Lahmian Medium (acrylic thinning medium)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you finish the rest of the model area around the canopy, begin by base coating it with your dark brown paint with two thin coats. Once this is applied and dry you're going to paint one of the bottom corners of the canopy glass in with your brown paint.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now unfortunately this next section is both the most fiddly part of the process and the one past-me forgot to take any pictures of. We're going to use a glazing method to build up a color transition from one side of the canopy to the other. First, we'll make a mixture of about 2 parts of our thinning medium with one part of our brown. Then we'll load the thinned paint onto a medium sized and dab off most of the runny excess on our palette- you want the brush to still be damp and have a little color but not leave a visibly wet trail if you drag it across your fingernail. Then with our brush we're going to gently paint in this very thin brown over the dark brown everywhere but the top corner opposite our brown bottom corner. Give the paint a few minutes to dry and then repeat, except this time paint even less of the upper corner area, leaving some of the previous thinned brown layer exposed. Continue this process multiple times, painting less and less of the canopy each time to build up a smooth transition of brown.
I have done this process with just water before and while it does work I find thinning medium works way better.
Tumblr media
Next, we'll apply the same technique again but covering an even smaller area using our orange. Mix it with our thinning medium in a 1:2 ratio and repeat the glazing process, focusing just on the lower corner of the canopy. Make sure to leave a small border of brown showing on the bottom and side of the orange. You should have a soft gradient from dark brown to burnt orange across the canopy.
Tumblr media
Finally some finishing touches. Take your bright orange paint, thin it, and sketch an 'L' outlining the orange you just glazed on. Then add a dot of yellow in the corner of the 'L' and dot the upper dark brown corner with a little bit of white.
Tumblr media
And here's the finished product! This is fundamentally a similar technique to the method I used on the Firefly with some extra tricks and it inherits the strengths and weakness of it- as a flat painting technique this works easiest on models with simple cockpit geometry and straightforward sight lines, but because it's a more labor intensive technique it's best used on models where you want to draw the eye to the head.

NEW MOC ALERT - Type Axiom - Unit BloodCross
Type Axiom is the fruit of combining key ideas from Type Abysuss (cone shaped arms and head design) and Type Astro (chest cockpit and knee systems). On top of that, a new ankle design is implemented by simulating human body. After all, I want to design mecha that has limits of movement just like human.
I am really inspired by a mecha art created by Marcin Rubinkowski. The beautiful design has a very strong use of white and red with black as decorative colour, which resonates an atmosphere of mechanistic religion in the future.
Back to the articulation. The shoulders are re constructed to coordinate with the scale of the updated backpack design, which is fully built in instead of the attaching system. By doing so, the entire body looks more completely and human.
Last but not least, the midsection. It took me a while to figure out the balance between flexibility and decent scale. The outcome is flexible but not as bendable as really spine, otherwise, the mech would not stand very well.
Overall, I am very happy about Type Axiom. It is getting closer to my idea of what a good looking and playable size Lego mech would look like.
What is your thoughts about it? Leave your comments and check out the artist’s works for great mecha inspiration!
