Mermaid Coral Castle by Simproved. Such a cool build! I only changed the beds and the kitchen. They're just hiding out for a bit "under the sea."

In honor of mermay, I'm interested in your thoughts on mermaids venora - whichever interpretation of mermaids you wish ✨️

I've mulled it over for a bit, so apologies if you aren't still in a Venora mood. I talked with @momsthetic about mermaids learning to walk on their new legs and how gender might differ for merfolk. Under a read more as it got kinda long.

Aurora is a mermaid from the North Pacific Ocean. They live in a pod of 50, so it's really rather small. Many pods are in the hundreds, roaming through the oceans for food.

Their kind isn't opposed to eating humans, but it's largely considered overrated. It's too much work for little reward with this many hungry mouths to feed, and the ocean provides plenty. Some other species of mermaids have differing opinions on the topic.

Aurora is singled out as a potential new monarch of the pod, and like everyone before them, must go on land to learn about the strange two legged creatures that have always posed the biggest threat to their kind. Unfortunately, it means they have to do it alone, or else it'd be too easy to rely on the one accompanying them.

A little mermagic, and Aurora has two legs. Two legs they have no clue on how to use, and attempting to stand goes horribly.

The merfolk have a solution though. Aurora is enrolled in a rehab facility, given some basic clothes and told to go listen to the humans to learn how to walk. The wheelchair they're helped into is uncomfortable, but it's a way to get around without help.

This is also when Aurora learns that humans have a whole set of rules, seemingly, on what gender is. They don't understand what it means when they refer to them as a woman. It's simply not a concept in their pod in the way humans understand it. Mermaids are able to adapt to what's needed for the pod, yet humans seem to be rigid in their structure.

It's in this rehab centre they meet Venus, a below the knee amputee recovering from a car accident. Her arm is in a sling as well, which makes it harder for Venus to use the cruches that are tucked away on the back of her wheelchair. They're in a similar boat, Aurora thinks, even if Venus has prior experience walking. They can't walk on two legs, so how could a human possibly learn how to do it on one.

I'm not educated enough on Venus's identity as two spirit yet, so for now I'll leave it at that it's part of her identity in this AU.

I think there's a whole lot one can go into exactly with how learning how to walk will go and the prospect of Venus leaving a lot sooner from the facility than Aurora is. Aurora doesn't have a phone to keep in contact with, so Venus will have to visit them to keep the connection they made.

Summary: The moment moonlight touched the edge of the crater above him, Lan Wangji forgot all about the three land boys. Nothing could compare to the glow bathing him. Every inch of him felt alive, electrified, like he had never been more himself. The power poured into him, channeling itself through his forehead ribbon and into his body. He sunk into a deep meditative state so he could hardly tell the difference between him and the moonlight. Lan Wangji was rudely pulled out of meditation by the sound of yelling from above him. He had no time to react before three boys, the land boys from earlier, fell from somewhere above and splashed into the pool. One of them, the pretty one, Wei Wuxian, fell basically into his lap, driving Lan Wangji under the water. Their eyes met for one startled moment before Lan Wangji fled the pool. He had made a huge mistake. Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Nie Huaisang have all been turned into Mermen. It is up to Lan Wangji to exchange his tail for legs, walk on land, and somehow strip them of their newfound powers. Loosely based on the H2O:Just Add Water/Mako Mermaids franchise.

My comments: Let me just start by saying I don't know anything about the H2O/Mako angle and that didn't trip me up one whit. I love mer-ji, he's so stately and silvery and solemn. Meanwhile, wwx and his buddies are definitely still The Idiot Trio, bless 'em. But once lwj follows them out of the ocean, there's getting to know each other, and finding a deeper connection - that neither of them wants to give up if lwj achieves his goal of taking away their accidental tails. Fanart at the end is pretty gripping, too.

Shark wizards and fish wizards are two especially fascinating species of wizard! We have many tomes covering different aspects of shark and fish wizardry, but we'll give some of our favourite extracts here.

Shark wizardry is one of the oldest forms of wizardry. The oldest sigils that are demonstrably examples of contemporary shark wizardry were unearthed in ocean ruins dated at least 200,000,000 years ago, from the Early Jurassic period, though predecessors that exhibit many of the same incantational properties as modern shark magic date back as early as the Late Ordovician (458,000,000-444,000,000 years ago). This makes shark wizardry one of the oldest continuous extant wizarding traditions, as well as among the most long-lived wizarding traditions in all of wizarddom. Despite its extreme seniority, shark wizardry remains just as effective today as it was when it was founded, and recent decline in the practice of shark wizardry can be entirely attributed to its illegal suppression and prejudiced anti-shark sentiment in the wizarding population.

Fish wizardry does not form a single magical class. Despite everyone agreeing that we know what fish wizardry is when we see it, there is no set of incantational or evocative elements that can uniquely differentiate all and only fish wizardry and sorcery, with every such proposed taxonomic system either excluding practices and traditions that undeniably fall under the class of fish wizardry, or else including practices and traditions that most of us would not consider fish wizardry, such as the transubstantiate of metals or scrying. Some popular wizarding blogs use this to say that "fish wizardry doesn't exist", but that's missing the point - fish wizardry, like necromancy, is a class of wizardry defined by its pragmatic functions and social role, rather than by its strict magical taxonomy.

Shark wizards have a long standing feud with practitioners of mermagic, though we have seen some improvement in relations in recent years. As the two great oceanic magical traditions, it should come as no surprise that shark wizardry and mermagic have often found themselves in competition, especially given their very disparate origins and sigilic practices. At its height, this feud occassionally even spilled over into all-out war, most famously in the Great Pirate War of 1710, which claimed the lives of many shark wizards and merfolk sorcerers. Thankfully, tensions have been falling of late, as new peace talks between the merfolk and shark wizards seem to have successfully broken through this millenia-old animosity. With the signing of the Treaty of Doggerland in 2022, the future looks bright for shark-merfolk relations.

Alrighty, so I was looking at your mermaid bushmed stuff, and it's all super fun. But I noticed there's a lot of focus on mer medic and human sniper, I think I saw only one post mentioning the reverse? I was wondering if you had any ideas for mer snipes and human medic? It mentioned mer sniper being caught and given to medic for research, and i think that's got some interesting possibilities. Especially if medic ever decided to free sniper, which could probably get him fired/in huge trouble/maybe in danger(?) if he was caught doing it? (I also like the idea of kinda feral shark mer sniper, and the probably extra sharp teeth he would have, ngl.) Idk, I just have mermaid bushmed brainrot and enjoy seeing aus getting flipped.

HIII MY FRIEND OMG OKAY IM SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO ANSWER THIS I WANTED TO THINK ABOUT IT EHEE BUT yes i do actually! i talked about it briefly on this post here (as in like.. 2 sentences KSDFKS)! so i'll elaborate on it a bit more! ^v^

i think it would be fun for sniper to have gotten caught by mann co somehow and given to medic to do Whatever with (with medic being his "Canonical" organ-harvesting, animal-loving self!) and gazing upon sniper and Of Course being EXTREMELY ELATED that hoo! a merperson!! i personally think sniper's fish-half would be a spotted wobbegong as i said in that post too!! ^u^

tbh the Main reason i didn't go with a mersniper in this one is because i actually have a "were-crocodile" sniper/human researcher medic au that i ALSO want to write a little something for, and i try to keep it balanced as far as who gets the "Beastie Treatment" so that both of them have some time in each role! ^v^ i think medic and sniper are both characters who would Love being supernatural/mythical creatures so it offers a lot of fun dynamics!

either way, i think a researcher medic/Creature Sniper is VERY fun... i love that idea a LOT!! ^v^ you actually make me want to elaborate more on my werecroc au..! heuhueue!! i think researcher medic is definitely compelling and the dynamic of master/experiment Definitely suits bushmed since it reminds me so much of their "canonical" dynamic!!! HEHEE!!

for my mer au though, sniper WILL be able to Become a merperson himself with the help of Convenient Mermagic! hoo! and yes.. he would Absolutely have sharp teeth.,. huhuh.,. >u< i think medic does too! sharp teeth and claws, with patches of their "fish patterns" on their human skin up their body, too! they'd of course keep their human body hair and fat on their human halves as well ^v^!!
