CINDER & RUBY: Jaune + Adrian
The Three Facts of Life
Jaune: You know, Adrian. Now that you're growing up, it's time you learn the facts of life. First of all, you're a dog Faunus, which means you have three things we need to know how to do. First is how to be Huntress' Best Friend. This is down in two easy positions.
Jaune: (On his knees) The begging position, with the big, sad, soulful eyes.
Tumblr media
Jaune: (Lays down) And lying at your leader's feet, also with the big, sad, soulful eyes.
Jaune: Second thing you need to know how to do is bury bones. Why? I don't know! (Buries bone) I can never find them! (Laughs) But it's what we do best. It's in our blood, just like number three; most importantly, a dog must know how to chase cats. Lucky for you, I happen to be an expert! Now, all we need is a cat-
BANG!
Cinder: (Chasing Ruby with a 2x4)
Ruby: (Running away, Dodging)
Ruby: (Ducks into the shed, Locks the door)
Cinder: (Waiting outside)
Jaune: We're in luck! Stay here and watch me show you how it's done. I'll scare her right out of her pajamas. Shush...
Jaune: (Sneaks up behind Cinder, Waves)
Adrian: (Waves)
Jaune: (Deep breath)
Jaune: ARFARFARFARFARFARFARFARF!
Cinder: (Scared out of her pajamas, Flees)
Jaune: (Chases her up a tree, Stands by)
Adrian: (Barks up at Cinder) Arfarfarfarfarf!
Jaune: Hahaha! Wanna try it, Adrian?
Adrian: Arf! Arf!
Jaune: (Shakes the tree, Catches Cinder) One sec, Adrian~! I just gotta talk to her~!
Adrian: Arf!
Jaune: (Carries Cinder away, Glares at her) You listen to me, pussy cat! My nephew is learning yo chase cats, and I don't want him to have any trouble! Understand? When he starts barkin', YOU start climbin'! Got it?!
Ruby: (Eavesdropping, Nods)
Jaune: Okay then! (Carries Cinder) Let's go!
Adrian: (Walks up to Jaune and Cinder)
Jaune: Okay, Adrian! It's your turn now!
Adrian: (Nervous) Arf arf arf! (Covers eyes)
Jaune: (Grabs Cinder, Throws her up a tree) Wow! Would you look at that, Adrian?! She's really up there, huh?
Adrian: (Happy pup noises)
Cinder: (Head through top branch, Dazed)
Jaune: Heh heh heh... That's my boy~!

I love ALL of these.
Results of pick a faunus species for each character (main cast edition)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I started watching RWBY I've always wondered what type of faunus fits better to each human character so at the beggining of this month I started posting each characters on reddit so people wrote their best ideas and the most upvoted answer wins. I'll leave the link for each character so you can see the different answers people's been leaving. Enjoy.

Long skit. Read at your own time.
Ruby: Hey Jaune.
Jaune: Sup Rubes?
Ruby: Let's say you were in charge. How would you have handled the Robyn and Ironwood situation?
Jaune: … … … Fourth wall break.
Me: What?
Jaune: You are still on this? come on man.
Me: Fine. Just one more time.
Jaune: For real?
Me: For real.
Ruby: What the-?
Jaune: Okay. Ruby you… weren't entirely wrong not to trust James but… it felt out of pocket.
Ruby: Jaune, Leon tried to kill us. Ozpin lied to us.
Jaune: Yeah… but Ironwood was different. He bailed your team out multiple times. I can't trust him because he hasn't done crap for me. Plus he knew about Pyrrha. Remember Qrow told us first about Salem. And Ironwood implied it by knowing the information before we even told him anything. I trust you though so I did not have a choice.
Ruby: But you-
Jaune: Yeah I got smug with him, but, I stepped down because I didn't want to go too far. However, nothing I said was false considering the circumstances. Especially with Mantle.
Ren: Jaune, the things that were going on in Mantle were temporary and things would get better once we were done with Amity.
Jaune: … Are you a f- Fiona!
Fiona: Hm.
Jaune: Fiona you are a better candidate for Mantle so please tell me was Mantle any better before all of this happened?
Fiona: No, no, it wasn't. We were already struggling financially. People were still poor but at least had steady jobs—until they got laid off. Grimm attacks were common but got worse due to the negativity, and we barely had defenses.
Ren: Which Mantle destroyed!
Jaune: Which were completely useless to begin with. The only one who defended Mantle better than all of us was Penny.
Nora: So basically it wouldn't have mattered if Amity was launched or not, nothing would have changed?
Fiona: Nope. At least not in a short amount of time.
Jaune: Wow then, um, hey.
Me: what?
Jaune: Think you can… you know…
Me: Sure.
Ironwood: *appears* What the?
Jaune: Ironwood, question.
Ironwood: Um, what?
Jaune: Let's say Amity Arena was no longer an option. What would have been your plan if that were to happen?
Ironwood: … … …
Jaune: That was your only plan wasn't it?
Ironwood: But it was a good one. It's worth fighting for.
Jaune: So instead of preparing Mantle for a fight. Trying to calm them down. Catching Tyrian, who we knew was there. And instead figuring shit out. Making compromises. We have been playing cat and mouse. so none of us had our priorities were f**** straight?
Ruby: I mean-
Jaune: You gave the relic to Oscar knowing full damn well he wasn’t up to speed in combat yet. Which he lost to Neo. Then his dumbass went to talk to Ironwood knowing damn well he was willing to even put him on a wanted poster. Even though Oscar was the most honest with him.
Ruby: …. …..
Jaune: Now, if I started questioning James earlier, then I would have been questioning you and your authority because I was following your lead. Believe me, you would not want me to do that because I will treat you like Qrow and Ozpin. As an adult. And if I found out you didn’t have a plan either, I probably would have gone rogue and kept secrets from you.
Fionna: Wow.
Yang: Jaune I already-
Jaune: I mean if I have to kill someone if it means that plan would work, I would. And though I advocated for Robyn, that doesn’t mean I trust her.
Robyn: Wait what?
Jaune: Hell yeah, you were just lesser evil. You were stranger to me. But then you became a problem. Shit, I should have at least captured May or Fionna. Probably because they haven’t shown any combative skills.
Nora: Okay then-
Jaune: Where are you coming from?
Nora: Not important. Let's say I suggest we reason with them. How would you do that?
Jaune: Again, that would be Fionna.
Robyn: Excuse me.
Jaune: Again Fionna is a better representative for Mantle, not just for being born there but also is Faunus. She’s basically the gray area between Marrow and Blake philosophies, who both would give a biased answer with no solutions to the problem.
Blake: Hey-
Jaune: You shut up. You don’t do shit for your people. I hope your dad plows your mom later on because they need another kid. After all, you were a mistake.
Blake: … … …
Jaune: Bellabooty ass hoe. And Robyn is just a discount Yang with an Ironwood personality. Stubborn as hell with a stick up their asses.
Robyn: *gasp*
Yang: Hey-
Jaune: *slaps Yang*
Yang: *shocked*
Jaune: Get the f*** out of here you bastard child.
Yang: *leaves*
Jaune: Anyways. If Fionna told me what we could have done to help Mantle more than what Atlas ‘recommended’ we do, she probably wouldn’t need the supplies anymore and return them. But before I would do any of that, again, I would have needed Penny back on duty. Meaning I would’ve forced Robyn to say Penny is innocent by using her semblance on Penny. Which is the semblance everyone in Mantle knows about.
Weiss: Okay but what about my-
Jaune: Almost everything Mantle uses is from the SDC. From the voting poles and heat vents. If we had put those together the puzzle would have fallen in place.
Ruby: Wait so basically why didn’t we just divide and conquer?
Jaune: Exactly. Anyway, Weiss, your father would have been under suspicion so his role as a council member would not be official yet. So that would have given us more time. I may not be able to stop Ironwood but at least give Mantle a fighting chance. And not only that none of us have been bouncing information to one another. I mean we could have taken the city with us. Or maybe put the people in Mistral or Argus.
Weiss: Wow.
Jaune: Honestly I really should have done more. Like I don't blame Ren for being mad at me. I could have done more. I should have been questioning you especially after Heaven and Argus.
Ruby: Jaune -
Jaune: Not just you but Ironwood too. Watts wasn't smart, we were just so stupid and stubborn that we didn't bother seeing our enemy was right in front of us.
Ruby: Jaune-
Jaune: Like Mantle had so many things wrong with it. From the cameras, the androids, the robots and its defense. The treatment of its civilians. Like seriously, if we had just put Amity on hold we could have done better.
Ren Jaune -
Jaune: And let's say we could have prepared Mantle, still lost and had to evacuate them. We brought them to the most dangerous kingdom in all of Remnant. How foolish.
Ironwood: And that's why-
Jaune: Shut up. Cause James, Atlas had it coming. Its-
Me: No, let me. Ironwood, your military, even the Kingdom deserved what it got. You treat Faunuses like slaves. You never keep your people in check and make me question you all the time. Like Argus. Yeah we can blame the kids for the majority but the woman who decided to flex a giant mech over a plane hijack. What the hell?
Ironwood: … …
Me: Then your soldiers have to look like the very machines you created. It's no wonder no one trusts them and it was easy to frame you. It's almost like they were trained to be the same and work as a union meanwhile keeping their individual personalities away. Probably because they were in Atlas for too long and they forgot what home or having a spine looked like. Crazy.
Ironwood: … … …
Me: Face it. Atlas was already ready to start another war. You flex your power, trying to show the world that Atlas is its biggest factor yet still refuse to humble yourselves when it comes to the rest of the world. Watts was right about you. You want control. Nothing else.
Watts: Ratchet even though you hate me I am still the smartest character in the show!
Me: No the fuck you are not!
Watts: What?
Me: Dude, remember, you were handed the win. Again, if our characters had figured shit out. Had their priorities in order. What would have been your back up plan?
Watts: Um.
Me: Not to mention, you didn't survive Atlas. You died.
Watts: Um.
Me: Then the fight with Ironwood. Bullshit. How does a scientist manage to keep up with a soldier especially in hand to hand combat? Plot.
Watts: Well Penny -
Me: Man don't get me started on how you messed up with Penny.
Watts: … ….
Me: Matter of fact. I'm going in today.*snap 🫰*
Characters from Rwby I needed to appear.
Me: Neo. Baby. I love you. But you - oo. Oo. You beat Yang in a 1v1. You held your own against Cinder, I don't care what anyone said you could have killed the bitch. You fought team Jnpr in a 4v1. Which I will say the writers sabotaged them because they should have given you more trouble. But you struggled against Maria. Maria who hasn't been a huntress or in combat situations for years. How?!
Neo: 🥺.
Me: Jaune you did good but… you should have been fighting more. I'll explain more in a few. Oscar, you did well, I mean you still dumb as hell but you did your best.
Oscar: Okay.
Me: Now you two I can't excuse. Well one of you. Nora, you could have done better. You should have been more screen time. But Ren-
Ren: *turn away*
Me: Nah-Nah, don't turn away from me Ren. Ren. Ren, look at me. Look at me! Where were hands? Where were your hands Ren? Cause so far you been spamming the same fucking move! Like god- I can't believe I'm saying this but Jaune can beat you.
Ren: … …
Ruby: Um Rat-
Me: Shh. Now you and your team. You all managed to beat the Ace ops in a fight. A 4v4 fight.
Ruby: Yep.
Weiss: We were excellent.
Blake: We did.
Yang: No problem.
Me: So tell me why could none of you manage to fight Cinder. Let only touch her. Matter of fact, when the Ace-ops pulled up on you again, what happened?
Blake: I mean we did land a hit on Cinder.
Me: Understood but… y'all have the biggest cheat code and that's Ruby. But then Neo knocked Yang off in one move to save Ruby then proceeded to whoop all of you. No effort.
Blake: Wow. Excuse us for going through emotions. We just watched our team mate theoretically die.
Weiss: Plus, she had to put in a little effort.
Cinder: Like hell. I was disrespecting you girls completely. The only one who managed to be on par with me was Penny.
Me: Who all of you nerfed to hell by making her human. Once again the villains are handed the win. Y'all played yourselves. But let’s get on topic on why I summoned you all here. What I notice in this show is not just horrible character development for most of you but in combat for all of you, I notice a heavy amount of skill issues.
RWBY characters: what?!
Me: Like you Ren. Bro your weapon works. It helps you close the distance to engage with enemies. You can throw them like boomerangs. And they have grappling hook functions. But you lack the skill to use them for some reason. Again what happened to your martial arts training? Like you could have been on Vine and Emeralds level but no you are a waste. Instead of spending training time on meditating you should have been training on how to use them and corporate them into your fighting style. If you had one.
Ren: *silent*
Nora: Hey don't be too hard on him.
Me: The man was talking loud at the wrong people instead of the bitch who caused the problem. And he barely amounted to shit in the volumes. And his semblance evolving is trash. Fuck his feelings. He should have died along with his parents.
Nora: Shit.
Me: Ruby, your weapon upgrade is impractical. In fact I barely noticed it until someone pointed it out.
Ruby: Um.
Me: Like you showed skill in wielding a scythe. It’s unnecessary. And you have dust in your bullets. Use them. At this point I'm questioning if you had any training. Weiss.
Weiss: … …
Me: Bitch you cannot be that rusty that you don't remember how to use your weapon along with your semblance. Like you have the best semblance in the show and it’s versatile. There is no excuse for you losing half the time. Quit trying to summon your henchman and fight. Blake.
Blake: …. ..
Me: They should have given you katana in my opinion but if it ain't broke don't fix it. Still girl… …. what happened to that one move you used back when you were fighting Roman? Like you could have taught Jaune that move.
Blake: I mean-
Me: And what happened to your counter game? Do you remember how your semblance works? And again you have dust. Use the shit!
Blake: … … …
Me: Yang.
Yang: …. ….
Me: In the volume seven open credits, why never you used that move once?
Yang: … … …
Me: I could say more like you being able to launch yourself in the air. Or how you could have saved Oscar by placing your bombs around the grim and using it as a smokescreen to grab him. But I digress. Still you never use that move once, I almost thought I was seeing a dragon fist. It was beautiful. Why have you never used that?
Yang: … … Um.
Me: I really hate you. Now for you three. Jaune my boy.
Jaune: … …
Me: what happened to your grandsword mode?
Jaune: I don't know. Pietro must have removed it.
Me: Cause you really could have done some serious damage. Like you should have been doing way more. Like I understand you're the healer, but… healers are supposed to be protected, and I don't recall anyone but Ruby protecting you. Plus just because you're a healer you know how to fight. Basically you're not a healer, you're a Druid. Plus rarely anyone in this show needs healing, beside Weiss, Ren and Oscar sorry butts. You're not just a Druid but basically a Red mage.
Jaune: Well-
Me: like bro if Vine had taught you well which he didn't. Or if you actually took the time to learn how to do that. Or if the writers gave a damn and the fan base doesn't have this beef with you. You would have been doing shit like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jaune: Aw man, b-but my grandsword mode only provides me with more offensive options but no defense.
Me: You had a magnetic hard light dust mini grenade shield.
Jaune: Oh my God!
Me: To clarify, unlike these five with skill issues while having enough, you and Nora should have way more options in your bag now. Like Nora, why don't you carry lighting dust on deck or wear an electric collar or something so you can use your semblance whenever you want?
Nora: That… does make sense.
Me: If not that then you really should have been a maiden. Mainly because of the theory of Fria being your grandmother.
Nora: Are you serious?!
Me: Hinse why I hate both Ren and Oscar. You two should have been the main focus of the Atlas arc, along with Yang, Ruby and Weiss. Especially if you two together counter Atlas technology. Like Nora you didn't need to be passed out for most of the volume if Jaune was with you.
Oscar: Woah man I -
Me: *slaps Oscar*
Oscar: … … …
Me: Look Oscar. I hate you. I-I wish… I wish Hazel killed you. You are a waste of f***** air. You are just the solution of cry baby fans who hated Jaune so much that they would settle for a new character. You get all this power and still get whooped. Leave my site. Now.
Oscar: *walks off*
Me: Dumbass kid gets all that power meanwhile everyone else stays stagnant.
Cinder: Well-
Me: Jaune is always ready to fight you. Ruby can beat you with a glance. Penny could have killed you. Neo could have killed you. Shit Raven should have killed you. You even lost to Winter who just got the maiden powers by a few seconds after Jaune killed Penny. Remember you have to gang up on Amber to get those powers. Humble yourself. And remember you are Salem's weakest link so far. At this point, Cinder, I really think Pyrrha died because of the plot and her just being stupid.
Pyrrha: Hey.
Summer: What-
Me: F you Summer. We still don’t know jack about you. It’s been nine volumes and we still have no clue on what happened to you. Like I said y’all be selling the win.
Rwby characters: … … …
Me: I should end this here but- I think I should explain. Jaune, Weiss, Yang and Nora. You four should have gone to Atlas. Again Jane and Nora counter Atlas technology with their weapons. Nora didn't need to be knocked out.
JWNY: … …
Me: Nora, out of all people you could’ve asked for advice on anything, you chose Blake. The girl who has a record of not steady relationships. Really?
Nora: I mean-
Me: I say Jaune would be a better person to ask considering he wanted a relationship with Pyrrha. Plus, he has a different perspective of Ren. He may know something about him that you don’t. Plus you two barely talk to each other, so a moment between you two would have been good, at least so we can see you as a team.
Rwby fan: Damn he’s right.
Me: Believe me I think Jaune and Hazel should have fought each other, but Jaune vs Ironwood is three times better. Fights don't always have to be psychical. They can be a game of chess. Jaune vs Ironwood is a battle between two leaders with different ideals and leadership methods. Ironwood doesn’t care how you feel, when you barks an order, he expects you to do it. Jaune on the other hand doesn’t just bark orders. He explains the order but is welcome to input. Really James is Jaune.
Rwby fan: Damn.
Me: Yang and Weiss could have been arguing over Ruby’s actions with Weiss defending her and calling Yang out on her bull crap. Then when it comes to Whitely Yang calls Weiss out on her attitude with her family. The show has so far shown us multiple times that these girls talk to each other more than they talk to their partners. Why is Atlas any different?
Rwby fan: Damn.
FreezerBurn fan: DAMN IT!
Me: Ruby, Oscar, Ren and Blake. Beside the three having the physical training, powers and tools to navigate the city. In fact, if Blake has White Fang experience shouldn’t she know how to drive. In fact, if Jaune and Ren are capable of riding hover bikes I don’t see how you two, Ruby and Blake, can’t ride one as well.
Ren: But without Jaune-
Me: *irritated* What has that training been for?
Ren: … … …
Me: Struggle Sasuke- man you are worse than Megumi. Anyways everything happens the same. Except when the hound appeared Ruby tried to use her silver eyes but they didn’t work. Which is a bigger shock than it being capable of speech. And even if you guys could retrieve Oscar who to say the hound couldn’t make the Grimm surround all of you and force you to give Oscar back or just take all of you to Salem. Again, Salem wanted Ruby from the start.
Salem: Yeah he’s not wrong.
Me: The only alternative is instead of everyone on Ruby’s team being captured, Ren and Blake escape while Ruby along with Oscar are captured.
Ren: But then we’ll be trapped in the snow.
Me: You both have training and experience, I’m sure you both are capable of surviving. Also if the Amity started working you could have just called Fiona and she would track your call and find you. Or May could have found you considering she had a plane. Or if you still got captured by the Ace ops and still went into battle with them, you could have, I don’t know, called your friends and let them know what happened.
Ruby: But if I’m imprisoned then Neo and Cinder will find out and try to kill me.
Salem: Cinder would but I have her on a leash.
Me: Plus, Neo has a habit of toying with her enemies. Torturing someone is not far for her. Plus Salem gave Neo what she wanted more than Cinder did. Neo is basically repaying Salem by interrogating you for the password.
Neo: * “True” face*
Me: Now Penny, I would have kept her experience the same. The difference is Jaune could actually save her along with her father. Pietro should have had a way to come back and save his daughter.
Penny: How so? I fell from the sky!
Me: I know it's a stretch but if Jaune was training using his semblance to recharge his aura faster than normal he could jump after you and try to catch you.
Jaune fan: Son of a -!
Me: And Penny with your last bit of consciousness of yourself, you in turn save Jaune from certain death. Sadly, when you were found by Weiss-
Weiss: Wait I was with Jaune? Then where were-
Me: Jaune if the Ace-ops stole Penny’s sword instead of trying to capture her would that not be suspicious?
Jaune: Yeah… I mean though Penny could stand her ground the Ace-ops has the upper hand. Plus with how stubborn they are especially Harriet and Elm they wouldn't settle for less. Unless they were ordered.
Me: So with that in mind would you have gone to Pietro?
Ruby: Ratchet just because I was willing to send Penny to Amity to lay low doesn't mean -
Jaune: WHAT?!
Ruby: … …
Jaune: You planned to leave our most valuable friend on Amity, alone.
Ruby: It was to keep her safe.
Jaune: Okay. Again. Why did you let her go alone?
Ruby: Um.
Me: Jaune did she tell you Cinder was in Atlas?
Jaune: … … How long?
Me: A while. She also saw her in the maiden’s room.
Jaune: … …. *Eyes twitching*
Ruby: Jaune-
Jaune: Don't. Say. Anything. To me.
Me: Yeah y'all need to start relaying information to one another. Anyways Weiss you along with Jaune helped get a message out about Salem. Though it still wouldn't have made a difference for Atlas and Mantle. But then Nora calls Jaune from where her and Yang, under Jaune's orders, continue to defend Until you heard Ruby's team went away. I would explain more but I know I'm not going to get likes or repost on this so I'll end this here. Still the fact that none of you have a role, know how to use your abilities to their fullest and having little to no brain cells proves Atlas was screwed from the start.

Blake: My relationships do not affect my ability to-
Mouse!Faunus: How can we trust a leader who willingly became a humans pet?!
Faunus Crowd: (start muttering)
Blake: (grumbling mentally as she tries to think of what to say)
Yang: (blares through the crowd on Bumblebee 2.0 with a giant trailer hitched off to the back) Blaaaaaake!
Blake: (sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose) What is it, Yang? I'm a bit busy, and you just plowed through a bunch of Faunus activists.
Yang: (parks and pulls off her helmet) Yeah, sorry about that, but I'm in a pickle. (Hops off the motorcycle and opens up the top hatch of the trailer - revealing hundreds of freshly baked cookies)
Blake: ...........
Faunus Crowd: ...........
Blake: What?
Yang: Nora, Ruby, and I decided to get the Remnant World Record for the number of cookies baked at the same time. We used my semblance to bake, Ruby's semblance to mix, and Nora's sheer crackhead energy to get everything else. But now we have too many cookies!
Blake: ......Nora and Ruby can't just eat them?
Yang: They already ate 3 trailer fulls! (Projects picture of Nora and Ruby in cookie comas) I remembered that you had a public event thing and thought maybe attendees would want some!
Blake: (lightbulb moment) Actually, that would be amazing! Thank you so much, dear, for being so considerate.
Yang: (confused by the diabetic sweetness dripping from Blake’s voice and slowly shuffles up to the podium as a few Faunus that hadn't been assholes go up to the trailer and grab a cookie) Uh, did I do something wrong? I can leave if I'm intruding.
Fox!Faunus: Nope! (Munches cookie) You're good! Thank you, Dear!
Faunus Crowd: Thank you, Dear!
Yang: (severely confused) What just happened?
Blake: (covers her microphone before kissing Yang on the cheek) Apparently, a butch, golden retriever lesbian bringing homemade baked goods is all you need to calm a bloodthirsty crowd.

Arrowfell!
Got Arrowfell on sale 2 days ago. Finished it yesterday, then wrote stuff. Figured now was a time to mention it.
Fun game. Short and basic but that's not a crime. Definitely get it on sale though, it is not a $30 game even if it was fun. Too short and too basic. But that's not why we're here, this is a Smut Blog not a review blog! We're here for the characters!
Team RWBY were fine, no real update. Although the game carried over the team being weaker/stronger as plot says. Ruby was a bit to dumb but it was more fun then annoying.
Winter was weirdly bitchy...but Penny is adorable and I love Penny.
Bianca was honestly really good. I like her being mature but not stuffy. And trusting Ruby always gets me. Might use her more.
Tumblr media
Roane was...fine. She's hot and I like how her hair glowed but that was about it. The game format didn't really give a chance for her hot headedness to get fleshed out so she felt a bit flat.
Tumblr media
Ivy is fine. I typically like sarcastic characters but she also suffers from just not being around much. Portals are cool for fights, and lewds.
Tumblr media
Ruda was cute even if her weapons are stupid. I like the lovable idiot types.
Tumblr media
Olive was so dumb. Honestly I like her more now, she really was just SO dumb. She is a bimbo trying so hard to be a calm and smart soldier. She is a dumbass bimbo from now on.
Tumblr media
Cerise is a nothing character, she's just an NPC for an early quest. But she's just really hot and fought Grimm with a pickaxe. She deserves the love.
Tumblr media
Mikado was also just a minor NPC for a quest. But she was a cute mouse girl with a lot of Faunus pride. She is perfect for bullying! A lot like Ilia honestly...

Knightfall, another Cinderella story?
Well, this was inevitable to happen eventually. I am running out of Joan of Arc Knightfall theories, so might as well jump over to Cinderella theory. I even did Rhodopis theory before proper Cinderella one. Oh well, either way let's get to it.
CINDER ELLA:
Unless you are extremely daft, it should come as no surprise that Cinder's primary literary influence is Cinderella. If you didn't figure it out from her veryyy subtle name reference, her backstory from Volume 8 should be dead giveaway.
Although her backstory is extremely on the nose Cinderella story, I'll mostly avoid talking about it. Her backstory is basically Cinderella story with tragic ending, but it is also finished story. Cinderella doesn't get to the ball and ends up murdering everyone, the end. After the conclusion of her backstory, Cinder somehow ended up finding Salem and started a new Cinderella story.
Does this make any sense? I'd say yes, story getting repeated with different conclusion is not unheard of in RWBY. Take Ruby for example, her story is endlessly repeating Red Riding Hood story with different characters playing the role of Wolf (Beowulf from her backstory, Cinder, Hound, and probably Summer Rose later on).
Tragic conclusion of one story doesn't mean all others will be tragic as well. As seen with Ruby, she managed to fend off both Cinder and Hound, but was unable to save people "devoured" by them (in Hound's case I mean silver eyed Faunus inside of him, not Oscar). However, I find it very unlikely Ruby will always be unable to save people from Wolf, she will eventually be able to triumph. Nothing concrete, but I'd say failure in first Cinderella story doesn't mean Cinder will forever fail and have her story end up as tragedy.
____________________________________________________________
In this segment I wanted to focus on Cinder's current Cinderella story. While her backstory mostly takes elements from Grimm version of the story, current one is way more Perrault.
Roles of Evil Stepmother and Fairy Godmother are both filled by Salem. Stepmother is someone restraining Cinderella and keeping her under her thumb. Fairy Godmother on the other hand provides Cinderella with tools to fulfill her desires. Salem does both for Cinder: she gave her Grimm arm as a tool to absorb Maiden powers, but at the same time that Grimm arm serves as a leash and a way to punish Cinder. The fact Salem makes Cinder repeat the same mantra Madame did (character which is on the nose Stepmother reference) is another clear reference.
Emerald and Mercury play a role of creatures turned into Cinderella's servants. This is based on both their standings in society (one being street urchin, other being crippled orphan) and the way Cinder recruited them. Fairy Godmother sends Cinderella to find mice, rat and lizards so she can turn them into her servants just like Salem sends Cinder to find Marcus Black but she ends up recruiting Mercury instead. Cinder catches Emerald stealing and ends up recruiting her, just like Cinderella found a rat caught in a mouse trap. Emerald growing disillusioned with Cinder in episode called Midnight is also fitting considering Cinderella's servants turned back into the animals after the clock struck midnight.
____________________________________________________________
Role of stepsisters on the other hand doesn't seem that clear. Looking at Salem's faction, straightforward way would be to read Watts and Tyrian as stepsisters. Both of them heavily dislike Cinder and often mock her during their interactions. And while they are not biologically related to Salem, both of them are loyal minions that always obey her orders and follow her plans. Stark contrast to problem child Cinder who often disregards Salem's interests in favor of her own.
Reason I say it's not that clear is that they are not competition for Cinder's end goal of obtaining Maiden powers. That's why I see Pyrrha, Winter and Weiss as plausible stepsister candidates. While none of them have any connection to Salem, they are all competition in some way. Pyrrha and Winter were selected as Maiden vessels, making them not only clear obstacle to Cinder's goals, but also usurpers to what she perceives as her destiny (different to lets say Raven, who became Maiden before story even began and wasn't selected via Maiden machine).
Winter and Weiss make sense since they are siblings and also exist as a contrast to Cinder's childhood. Former were raised privileged as members of Atlas upper class, while Cinder was raised as a slave. From Cinder's perspective, they represent everything wrong with Atlas and everything she was denied as a child.
Weiss and Pyrrha only make sense in context of Jaune as Prince Charming (more on that later). If Weiss' attraction to Jaune is not just Volume 9 thing and persists further, then that groups Weiss and Pyrrha as characters that have crush on Jaune. This would make them competition to Cinder who consistently "dances" with Prince Jaune.
MANY DANCES OF FALL MAIDEN:
So Cinderella has been equipped with all the tools and followers to reach her goal, but what is her goal? Thing that annoys me when people claim Cinderella's primary motivation is Prince. It is not. In no major version of Cinderella is her primary motivation Prince, she just wants to get to the ball and have fun. Cinderella meeting Prince is consequence of her getting to the ball.
"I wish I could. I wish I could." She was not able to speak the rest, being interrupted by her tears and sobbing.
This godmother of hers, who was a fairy, said to her, "You wish that you could go to the ball; is it not so?"
"Yes," cried Cinderella, with a great sigh.
This is quote from Perrault version, no mentions of Prince anywhere.
Why does this even matter? Well it separates Cinderella's goal, that being getting to the ball and Prince. They are two different things and should be read differently as well. For Cinder her goal is getting all the Maiden powers. Prince is not Maiden powers, he/she is consequence of her quest for power.
_____________________________________________________________
In RWBY, Ozpin compares fighting to dancing during Volume 2.
"If you think about it, fighting and dancing aren't so different"
So whenever Cinder fights someone, it's potentially a reference to Cinderella's dance with Prince at the ball.
Depending on story version, number of dances she has with the Prince varies. In Grimm version it's 3 dances, 2 in Perrault and 1 in Disney version. However, I'll respect older versions more here, especially since Cinder doesn't seem to follow Disney version that much. So in conclusion, she has to have multiple dances with Prince.
Prince is the one to approach Cinderella, not the other way around. He is immediately smitten with her and is obsessed by her in all major versions.
Perrault version:
The king's son led her to the most honorable seat, and afterwards took her out to dance with him. She danced so very gracefully that they all more and more admired her. A fine meal was served up, but the young prince ate not a morsel, so intently was he busied in gazing on her.
Grimm version:
He never let go of her hand, and whenever anyone else came and asked her to dance, he would say, "She is my dance partner."
She danced until evening, and then she wanted to go home. But the prince said, "I will go along and escort you,"
____________________________________________________________
So Prince in RWBY should also be someone that goes after Cinder, develops an obsession with her and fights her multiple times. Prince should also be consequence of her goal, not her primary goal.
It might be very obvious where am I going with this.. it's Jaune. Let's go over all major opponents Cinder fought throughout the story and why I think they work/don't work as Prince.
Ruby: She both works and doesn't. She works as straightforward Prince in first 3 volumes. She in thorn in Cinder's side throughout the early portion of the story, but not her primary goal. Ruby is simply consequence of Cinder's quest for power, just like dance with Prince is consequence of Cinderella coming to the ball. They even fight during Beacon Ball, which is very on the nose reference to Cinderella's dance at the ball (Cinder even has to escape before midnight). Final encounter at the end of Volume 3 once again feels as Cinderella reference, Prince encountering unmasked Cinderella just like Ruby encounters "unmasked" Cinder.
This is where things complicate and where I feel we are getting into third Cinderella story. Cinder's story reaches tragic ending at the end of Volume 3, permanently scarring her and turning her into monster. Why do I say this? Because Cinderella references seemingly reset back to the starting point, as well as Ruby/Cinder rivalry changes. Ruby is no longer consequence of Cinder's goals, she is (or at least her death is) one of her goals. They never "dance" again after this and Cinder makes sure they are never in "dancing" distance of each other. Ruby also develops very impersonal rivalry with Cinder where she looks at her as more of a nuisance she has to deal with than proper rival.
But then again, Ruby is the only character that can fulfill the role of Cinder's savior considering her silver eyes are the only thing that can free Cinder from Salem. It's bit annoying, she is Prince, then she isn't, but if Cinder is ever gonna be redeemed Ruby has to become Prince once again.
Amber: Goal, not consequence. Poor girl didn't even know they were dancing
Ozma's incarnations: They fought single time and that was mostly off screen. Doesn't feel major for me to read them as Prince Charming. Neither side seems to hold any major interest in each either. For Oscar Cinder is just another enemy, for Cinder Oscar is someone she needs to capture for Salem's interests or target to hurt Ruby.
Pyrrha: Cool fight, but not quite Prince Charming. Pyrrha goes after Cinder, but it lacks edge overall. For neither side fight is particularly personal. For Pyrrha Cinder is someone she needs to stop, for Cinder Pyrrha is just another powerful enemy in her way. It will also always remain single fight.
Raven: She is Cinder's goal as a Spring Maiden, not consequence of her actions. Raven has next to no interest in Cinder beyond her being Salem's agent.
Neo: This one actually works surprisingly well with them being partners throughout Atlas portion of the story, but I don't think it's quite there. Neo's revenge quest is consequence of Cinder's action. However, I think it lacks edge from Neo's side. Working with Cinder is simply means to an end for her until she kills Ruby.
Winter and Penny: Initially works since she fights both of them on her path to Fria, but both cease being Prince once they become Maiden.
Weiss: Almost completely impersonal from Weiss' side, poor girl just keeps getting targeted because Cinder wants to hurt someone else's feelings.
Now onto the main course.
JAUNE AS PRINCE CHARMING:
Jaune works for multiple reasons. First, he has an unhealthy obsession with her after she killed Pyrrha. He goes on a quest to find her at Haven academy similar to how Prince attempts to pursue Cinderella after every dance. This works especially well with Grimm version where Prince pursues her all the way to her home. Jaune is content with dying, as long as he can inconvenience Cinder in some way and buy his friends some time.
Prince's possessiveness also works with their Haven encounter. Jaune picks Cinder as his opponent just like Prince approaches Cinderella and picks her as his dance partner. Speaking of dance, due to their skill difference, fight ends up being almost dance like. Jaune cannot seriously challenge Cinder, while Cinder is not taking the fight seriously. Setting being open hall and all opponents being matched mostly 1v1 (Nora and Ren once again being party poopers and ignoring literary references) also add to the ball room allusion.
Needless to say, fighting Jaune is definitely not Cinder's goal. Just like dancing with Prince is consequence of Cinderella coming to the ball, fight with Jaune is consequence of Cinder's quest for power. Just like in Cinderella story, Cinder eventually has to leave, disengaging the fight.
Additionally, they end up fighting once again at the end of Volume 8. Once again, fight with Jaune is consequence of Cinder's quest for power, this time going after Penny. He is the one to engage the fight, realizing she is present after seeing her glass shards through the portal. So she appears at the ball again, he once again goes after her and she once again disengages the fight and leaves.
And unlike Ruby, from Jaune's perspective rivalry with Cinder is extremely personal. Which makes additional encounters between them almost inevitable.
SUBVERSION OR...?:
So how does this particular Cinderella story end? And thing is, I can easily see it going the way of full subversion, as in another tragic Cinderella story. Reason I tend to focus on Joan of Arc theories and references is because I feel that it's convoluted enough for me to think it's straightforward story. What's the point of going out of your way to give Cinder plenty of obscure Joan's King references post Volume 3 if the goal is to subvert them with the most expected conclusion of the story. It's hard to appreciate subversion when you don't even understand what is being subverted. Cinderella is bit different. Story is familiar to pretty much everyone and references are more clear. It's entirely possible they'll go Adam route again.
Either way, let me present two plausible endings I can see them creating. Both are of course based on end of story sequence when Prince finds Cinderella and realizes poor servant girl was the princess he was dancing all along.
One is as I said, "Adam" version. Jaune has final encounter with Cinder (probably alongside someone like Weiss), her likely being completely disgraced at that point. She starts going on unhinged Adam like rants (revealing her true self much like Cinderella shows her true self to Prince) on how she is actually the victim, bla bla bla. Jaune tries to persuade her to stop and she continues fighting him until he eventually kills her. Since Cinder's Cinderella was arch enemy to her Prince, it would make some sense for their final encounter to end up in blood. In my previous theory I stated how I find repeating Adam formula to be boring as shit, but I cannot disregard possibility of this happening as much as I heavily dislike it conceptually.
Other is more straightforward version of Cinderella story. Jaune and Cinder would have another fight, this time Jaune pushing her back significantly. This is reference to the last dance Cinderella and Prince have in the story. In Perrault version she loses track of time and has to run, losing her glass slipper. In Grimm version, while she runs she falls for the Prince's trap and loses one of her golden shoes in tar trap. Whatever version you go with, she loses her shoe to the Prince, in Grimm version due to his ingenuity. In this fight we'd see her metaphorical mask slip more and more (mask which Jaune nicked before, mask which seems to be made out of glass) showing glimpses of her true self. This is conceptually relatively similar to the fight I theorized in one of my Vacuo theories I'll link below.
This would eventually lead to non combat encounter between the two, where her mask completely slips, showing her true self. Their rivalry ending with Jaune sympathizing with her to some degree and offering her help, redeeming her.

What are your thoughts? Feel free to comment if I missed some Cinderella and Prince references or if you have your own interpretations. That's all for today.

For the rwby ask thing, 7, 20, 28
Thanks for asking!
7. Favorite lines?
Most of my fave lines are bittersweet or sad-yet-hopeful, thanks to Volume 4. Blake and Ghira’s talk, Ruby’s speech at the end. “You didn’t drag us along; you gave us the courage to follow you.” Also Ruby resolving to 'keep moving forward' despite her fear in v5.
There's this line in the 2nd RWBY Beyond episode where Jaune wonders "Do you think we're gonna make it?" and it's just so topical now because it was made at a time when RWBY's future was uncertain. No matter what, they're still gonna try, and that's worth it.
On a lighter note, sometimes I remember Vol 2's “They don’t give out prizes for almost” “They do and they’re called silver!” and it cracks me up every time.
20. What are you looking forward to seeing in Vacuo?
The new headmaster, Theodore. We got a hint at his design in the RWBY Beyond shorts, but I can’t wait to meet him. The Summer Maiden, if she’s even in Vacuo, so we can complete the set (and gear up for Maidenbowl #3). Renora growth (even though they aren’t together) because I love them both and I love them together and I want the best for Nora. Emerald being a good guy now and how that has changed how she interacts with people.
I am also interested in seeing, even though it will break my entire heart, Oscar/Ozpin’s struggle with the merger. I just want Oscar to be happy, and I am fearful that we might lose something once they are one consciousness.
28. Fairytale character you'd want to see RWBYified?
Okay, so lame answer but I’ve been watching Inuyasha recently… and Viz Media got big bc of the Inuyasha localization… and he’s got a ‘faunus trait’ with the dog ears…it makes too much sense.
For actual fairytale characters, maybe “the Lion and the Mouse” from Aesops fables. It’s a very RWBY moral, that a smaller, more simple soul can still make a difference. I also loved Fenix’s design from the Grimm Campaign, and would like to see something like it in the show.

What’re your full thoughts on season 9? I wasn’t going to watch it—especially after following along with you and other rwde blogs’ feelings on the content as the it aired—but I keep hearing this is the best written rwby season despite that. It’s a mixed bag right now, even within the more critical side of the fandom, and you always have nuanced takes, so, I figured I should ask you 🙂
You don't ask the easy questions, huh. (And I don’t reply to them in a timely manner, huh.)
I think "best written" is accurate from a certain point of view and when you keep in mind that it's being compared to other volumes of the same show. There’s a new framing device with the story, a twist villain that holds together on a second viewing, and emotional beats we’ve wanted to see hit for years. The animation itself is also good. Things are smooth and there’s even attempts at actual fight choreography. Even the voice acting is fairly consistently good.
If you can't tell already, I've said all of that with a massive disclaimer, and that disclaimer is that this volume falls apart when you look at it more closely. To me, this volume is, and I cannot emphasize this enough, frustrating. It's frustrating in a similar way to V8: you can kind of see what the writers are trying to do, but it's all executed in a way that makes you wonder what was going on in the writers' room. The plot beats, messages, and themes are not communicated well, are contradictory, or are otherwise damaging.
Heavy spoilers beyond this point if you managed to not watch it between sending this ask and me responding.
Atlas has fallen. Our heroes failed. This is the belly of the beast moment, the find-your-motivation moment, the break-the-geode-to-see-the-beauty-within moment.
And it falls so, so flat.
Penny’s death, this big moment from the previous volume, comes up a couple times but is never resolved. Jaune never states that he killed her. No one asks. Ruby is sad over her sword a couple times and that’s it.
Jaune is an old man! He’s a little bit out of his mind! Only no, he’s fine, here’s a magic knife that makes him young again.
There’s an interesting framing device! Only no, we’ll stop trying to follow it halfway through, and because the audience never knows how the story goes until the characters experience it or talk about it, there’s no interesting use of the framing device. It’s just there.
The Gods’ origin story! Only…why? Who was asking for this? Why did we need an origin myth for an origin myth? And why did it have to take up so much real estate in the final episode to boot?
To get to the main team:
Weiss’s kingdom, her home, was destroyed. She doesn’t even know the fate of her family beyond the portals. I would expect her to be the most affected by the events of the previous volume: quiet, grieving, grasping for a next step to avoid thinking about it. But no—she’s the comic relief for this volume. In addition to a mouse I personally found annoying most of the time who is also comic relief. Weiss’s trauma is almost entirely ignored except for when she talks about Penny’s death, her comment at the burning market, and one sad face in the Punderstorm. Every scene with her falling down or getting hit by a rock or cheerleading grated on me. It felt so divorced from what she should be feeling that it broke my immersion and was a significant source of frustration.
Blake is an empty character. Her whole role in this volume is two things: person who read fairy tales (that everyone else also read), and person who loves Yang. Her big hero moment is talking about a struggle to bridge humanity and Faunus that we have never seen on screen. If you’ve been bothered by Blake’s lack of agency and character in previous volumes, the former may get marginally better here at the start, but by the end they’ll both be worse than they ever were, and both a significant source of frustration.
Yang is a mess. She starts strong with the “You shouldn’t be here,” but by the end of the volume she’s turning on her sister, blaming her for her distress, and doing nothing while her sister kills herself. She puts Blake over Ruby, hell, she puts Jaune over Ruby. I couldn’t believe what she was doing, and the bees confession scene was cringe-inducing with how it made her love focus on incredibly broad or superficial things about Blake. No mention of shared trauma, or past hurt. Frustrating.
And Ruby. Poor Ruby. This was touted as Ruby's volume. She's going to be the focus, she's going to struggle. The OP hammers this point home with unsubtle imagery of Ruby crying and falling behind while her teammates carry on unbothered. That had me intrigued, because Ruby has been more or less a static character since the end of Volume 3. Her struggles have been momentary, situational, and without lasting impact, so I wanted to see her have that belly of the beast moment in her hero's journey and come out different and stronger for it.
Problems are, they went about her spiral in the most ham-fisted way possible. Ruby is obviously depressed because they have to let the audience know, but it’s to the point that I can’t believe her teammates just let things lie. As a result, her team come off as jerks. Where are the friends from the Beacon days, the ones whose reuniting was a huge moment in V5? Certainly not here, watching adult man Jaune yell at Ruby for a plan he helped create and enact. Certainly not there, slowly walking after a crying and upset Ruby who flew off in a direction Jaune should know is dangerous shortly after Neo attacked, while blaming Ruby for not talking to them when the time Ruby did, Yang brushed her off and compared her to Ironwood.
Her team dismisses her, Neo beats her to a pulp, and she commits suicide. She goes to a tree that’s been established to wipe memories and recreate people.
Is her team upset? No. Worried? No, at least until Yang sees Ruby encased in wood. But it’s all fine, because Ruby sees that her mom wasn’t perfect and that her mom thought she was perfect just the way she was as a child, and that fixes all the the trauma the entire volume hammered into your ears and eyeballs in the span of maybe two minutes.
I will pause briefly to say that Ruby’s brief fight scene is good. Genuine highlight there.
But the main villain who tortured Ruby then gets off without any resentment or frustration from the heroes. And the twist villain, whose motives are far more sympathetic to me than the main villains’, is brutally torn apart.
The dissonance between what the show seems to want its morals to be and what they actually are is staggering.
To sum up:
The status quo for the characters did not change. The status quo for the setting did not change. The status quo for the writing did not change.
If you like the show as it is, if you take it at face value, you’ll be fine, as you’ve been fine for the last several volumes. But if you try to sink your teeth in, you’ll be getting a mouthful of dust—and not even the magical kind. There is little past that other than more frustration.

He uses Rashoumon to make his fake cat ears move
-
Vel'vet's cape is also used as a blanket, he is very attached to it
He also has two main outfits, sometimes switching between trousers or a skirt
Despite having a Faunus' night vision, Cherise is still afraid of the dark as he can't see color and has bad eyesight in general
He also sometimes hides his Mouse ears under his hat when noise gets to much
Kazuha already had Shinku's weapon made, he was just too stubborn to use a specialized one
Shinku's nightmare would manifest as Dark Era! Dazai in the real world, the rest would mirror his P5 Palace
Unknown to Shinku, his horns are sensitive to people's emotions and can also be used as a catalyst for them
His outfit is made to resemble a Grimm as to blend in when on the hunt
His mask is prescription and can fold in and out of his hat
The hat can also fold into a carryable size which fits in his black messenger bag
Shinku specializes in disguise and infiltration, but still has a huntsman outfit

the gf's are FLIRTINGGGG and weiss is a happy bumbleby shipper and so am i 🥰🥰🥰
ruby down in the dumps and dragging down the mood for weiss too noooo
"i know that was a lot to hear" well yes weiss, ruby is mourning her pinocchio gf for like the millionth time :')))
oh this annoying ass mouse i swear to god
"theres something about that one" ruby says about the little mannequin doll thing. my GODDDD yall. "jinxy wants [your] saddest memory" with ruby's face the only one shown to the audience. fuckin hell guys......
THE DOLL IS PENNY'S BLADE GUYS I CANT TAKE IT like that belonged to her dead girlfriend whom she is still mourning and nobody gives a FOCK 😭😭😭
weiss getting into shenanigans is funny tho lmfao
hol up ruby's emotions influencing the realm?? and ruby offering up the only keepsake she has of penny... ;___;
"and stop pretending we know what we're doing" okay gang i am 1000% here for serious angsty ruby.
and that concludes ep 2! onto the next one!
rwby volume 9 liveblog
thanks to @kkglinka i am watching rwby again. i just finished rewatching previous episodes as a refresher, and man i realise i slipped up when i mentioned my fav character was salem lmfao i was thinking of CINDER. girl is such a bitch i love her.
but anyway. new volume. here we go.
starting with episode 1 ruby finds a talking mouse and the tone from the season finale of v8 has drastically shifted LMFAO.
we then cut to blake and weiss who've found each other but no sign of yang. then immediately have some antics with a whole rat pack who ambush the two.
okay now ruby's here and the three of them reunite. yay! not a very happy reunion, theyre all more confused and unsettled than anything and i cant blame them. im confused as hail too.
OKAY new monster??? doesn't look like a typical grimm and it talks, seemingly narrating what it does. i love the vibe, very creepy, love that.
AND YANG!!!!
omg i'm lowkey disappointed that blake's first reaction upon the monster running off isn't to jump into yang's arms. like girl talk about a delayed reaction but fine okay she's just being cautious making sure the monster is thoroughly chased away.
THEN GF HUG!!!!! i love them. i miss them a lot. feeling lots of feelings
but then okay plot and weiss revealing everything that happened after they fell since she was the last one of them who fell down the bridge.
AND UGHHH RUBY'S REACTION TO PENNY 😭😭😭 my nuts&dolts heart 😭😭😭 why must they keep HURTING me this way
okay and blake mentions her gut feeling again. THEYRE IN A FAIRY TALE !!!!!
okay the new opening reveal slaps and looks like neo is gonna be a very prominent character this season. jaune will be showing up soon too no doubt, and a mysterious silhouette. and then OH allusions to alice in wonderland? the girl is alice? she's brown? i'm here for this.
aight bring on episode 2 baybey

Note
Truth: What Faunus would they be if they could be one
Name Randomizer: Neo
Neo, finger to her chin: *thinking*
Cinder: I swear if you say “cat.”
Neo, illusioning up herself a pair of kitty ears, one pink, one black: ?
Everyone except Cinder: Awww!
Cinder: Oh gods...
Blake: Have a problem with cat Faunus, Cinder?
Cinder, shaking her head: It just seems like too obvious of a choice.
Velvet: Not as obvious as rabbit, perhaps?
Cinder: Not what I meant...
Neo, illusioning up a pair of eagle wings: Ooooooo.
Ruby: Eagle Faunus?
Neo, thinks for another second, then gets and idea: I know! *illusions up some whiskers and a pink nose* Mouse!
Everyone, including Cinder: AWWW!

Rude Red and Royal
Tumblr media
Just some quick and maybe obvious thoughts on the episode!
THE RED PRINCE AND RUBY
Tumblr media
The Red Prince and Ruby are foils for 2 reasons:
Both are trying to replace their missing parent. The Red Prince has to win every game he plays and Ruby has to be the Perfect Huntress because this is what their parents were like. This is their purpose:
Curious Cat: Your majesty, you must be so disrupt, not able to do the one thing you were put in this acre to do, I understand. It really isn't fair. You must play all games and win at any cost.
Both characters are dealing with feelings of grief and mange to get on each other's nerves. The Red Prince refuses Penny's sword and finds it disgusting, which upsets Ruby. Ruby instead ends up ruining the Red Prince's birthday and her presence clearly reminds the Prince of something bad, which happened to the Red King:
Toy soldier: Well, if it hadn't been for your kind, the King would still be here!
In short, the Red Prince may be rude, red and royal, but he also mirrors a part of Ruby. Specifically, he is complementary to Little:
Little is the positive part of the inner child. They are innocent, optimistic and generous, so they give Ruby hope and make her happy.
The Red Prince is the negative part of the inner child. They are pompous, selfish and annoying. However, they are deep down just a child grieving over the loss of a parent.
Ruby can't see this because she herself can't properly grieve. She lets her anger take control and starts arguing with a child, which clearly leads to nothing good. Luckily for her, the Curious Cat appears:
Curious Cat: It must hurt your heart, let me help!
It is important that their magic has the Red Prince cry. They let what was repressed come out and even if only temporally, this helps the Prince. Just like Ruby should just let the rain pour:
Tumblr media
But refuses to because she insists on pushing forward.
A GAME OF CHESS
The game of chess is a clear metaphor of RWBY's journey up until now. Ruby finds herself leading an army made of hopeless soldiers. However, thanks to her leadership and her friends' strength she manages to inspire the other pawns to fight.
However, when everything seems to be going well, a sudden change happens:
Tumblr media
Because of their humanity RWBY get targeted by both the red and the white pawns. This is similar to how Salem uses her opponents' human flaws and feelings to divide them. Ironwood lets fear conquer him and becomes RWBY's enemy, just like Salem is. The end result is that RWBY find themselves attacked on multiple fronts. However, they manage to stay strong and come up with a wonderful counter-offensive...
...only to fall from the table:
Tumblr media
Ruby: I don't know how that went so...wrong.
In the end, they might have fought a wonderful fight, but they did not get what they wanted. All they did was to ruin a child's birthday, to get shrunk and to almost die. Why is that so? Why couldn't they win against the Red Prince? Why couldn't they win in Atlas? Maybe now like then there was something they were not seeing, something they refused to consider:
Tumblr media
Ruby: We go to Vacuo, all of us, and hope that we've thought of everything.
HEROES AND MONSTERS
Red Prince: Wait, what type of creatures did you say you are again? Ruby: Well, Blake is a Faunus, Little is a mouse and the rest of us are... humans...
The Red Prince's reaction to the protagonists' humanity brings to mind Blake's words last episode:
Blake: We are doing what Alyx did! We are ruining everything!
It is clear humans have manged to mess a lot of things up in Ever After and the protagonists seem to be doing as much. This is partly because they struggle to understand the strange inhabitants of this world and vice versa. In short, there is a problem of empathy, as this episode clearly shows.
The Red Prince isn't just an arrogant brat, but clearly an orphaned child, who is struggling to cope and RWBY can't see it because too entangled in their own problems and in following up a script they do not understand.
Alyx won against the Red King and got help, so they should do the same, right? They should win against the Red Prince and get his support in exchange:
Ruby: You can throw a tantrum, if you want, but we won! Take us to the tree!
Except time changes and so do people. The Red Prince is different from the Red King, but Ruby can't approach him as his own person because all she wants is to get out.
This is similar to what happens with the Jabberwalker. The Jabberwalker is scary and so RWBY react as if they are fighting a Grimm... Except this creature has so far done nothing wrong... they seem to be minding their own business and are clearly distressed about something. And yet, every human they meet cruelly attack them.
It is not by chance, then, that an episode that introduces the idea humanity is "evil" ends with Neo cruelly attacking a monster-like creature that begs her to stop. Clearly this volume wants the characters to rethink the lines between heroes and monsters, so that they can start develop enough empathy to see the people behind the monsters.
EDIT BECAUSE I FORGOT
The Red Prince seems to loosely combine 3 characters:
The Queen of Hearts > He is capricious like her and wants to win by cheating. The passion for beheading is also taken from her.
The Red Queen > The Chess motif is taken from this character, as it is the idea of crossing a chessboard to win. In Through The Looking Glass, Alice has to cross the chessboard in order to grow up and to be a Queen. Here, the Prince finds himself wearing a crown, when it is too soon for him. He is a child, who must be a ruler and he struggles at it. He has not undergone the necessary development.
Humpty Dumpty > He breaks like an egg and all his soldiers - who are the King's soldiers in reality - are trying to keep him together. The metaphor here is that the Red Prince is affected by the loss of his parent and the toy-soldiers are trying to help him.
I should probably reread the parts concerning these 3 characters to properly comment on these allusions, though.
