TOEI Les Miserables (1981, dubbed)

Just finished watching the English-dubbed Toei Les Mis from...1981, apparently , according to the old video warnings about NOT COPYING THIS TAPE , thanks FBI

it's ...well it's Concise, in that it's about an hour and fifteen minutes long

It's also extremely focused on JVJ , to the point that almost nothing he's not directly participating in is ever shown on screen, so that, for instance, JVJ has to be standing there awkwardly in the background while Marius and Cosette make out in the garden. But also he's not there for some things? like Fantine's death, which is announced in this by Javert telling Valjean that SHE'S DEAD, SHE DIED, SHE'S DEAD , DO YOU HEAR ME, DEEEEEAAAD and then bragging about how he called her a whore and told her Madeleine was a liar and threatened her child and killed her with stress while Valjean was gone!??!?!? Maybe he's just got a morbid streak on account of being Edgar allen Poe

Oh yeah, it's Very Dubbed Anime of the Early 80s. My fellow Endstage Cold War US Kids will know what that means in terms of Quality. We are not allowed a moment of silence onscreen, things are wildly overexplained , there's a whole lot of Internal Monologue Voice for the silent scenes with no mouth movement, and the dubbing in the final sequence makes Valjean Live even while the animation is very clear that no he does not.

But on the plus side we DO get Fantine fighting for her own rights, Javert blatantly saying he let her attacker go because HE was a rich person and SHE is a Lowly Poor, a general pro-democracy/ pro-revolution summary of the early 19C in France, Cosette learning that Marius (and. Gillenormand. For Some Reason.) are keeping her from her dad and actively arguing back, and Valjean carrying Marius like this:

who even sort of looks like her mom! Fantine has a wonderful sense of rightful anger and a great design that could easily work for Enjolras too, which is of course ideal:

hi again ! i read your hot dog scene and the way you describe food with such love and detail is honestly wild and so fun to read, and i was wondering if you had any tips on writing about food/experiencing a new food for the first time ? one of my characters (ava, who just found evangelion on the cloaked web and binged it, btw) has had a very small variety of food before she broke out of the lab she was raised in, and the initial part of her my other protagonist's storyline is centered around food and candy to some extent. i want to really encapsulate the joy that new tastes and textures bring to ava but every time i try to write about food itself and not the fun of the process of making it, i sound really cringy. i'm personally a casual food enjoyer, no gourmet by any means, so that's on my part. anyways sorry for this huge fucking paragraph lmao if you have any quick tips i would really appreciate it!!!! i hope you and Wife and the cats are doing well :))))

So when it comes to food descriptions my main focus for my own writing is perspective. Different people focus on food in different ways, and this is showcased in the Songbird Elegies between each POV.

Edgar's a chef, and he grew up going hungry often because of parental neglect, so he has a deep passion and love for food. He knows how to detect distinct ingredients in a meal and can acknowledge how textures mix to create something new. He wishes he had the money to go to a molecular gastronomy restaurant back when that was a thing. He can distinguish mushrooms by taste and smell. Edgar can talk to you for about ten minutes on the uses of saffron. It is beyond what is reasonable for someone in his industry.

Scott also loves food, but he isn't nearly as educated about it. He can sort of cook, but he grew up mainly with lovingly-crafted home cooked meals prepared by his mom and the other adults of the community. Food is emotional for him. If he is having a bad day, a three-dollar cup ramen and a gourmet soup will have the same effect. He just appreciates a hot meal. When Edgar makes him a Japanese curry in chapter one of Blind Trust I think he says that the smell "inspires without intimidating", or something to that effect. His view of food is much more abstract.

Tenzin does not think about food that often. She knows when it's good and when it's bad, and can gauge the general temperature of it. I think she's probably the worst cook of the three, but she does still try to cook. She thinks food is just a thing you eat to live, but it's nice to eat stuff that's good, and her mind doesn't go much farther than that. When she eats something it reflects that.

The only actual tip I have is that if you're describing a meal you've never had, I get a lot of use from referencing the novels before recipes for that meal. That's what I did when describing some moussaka Scott's mom makes in book two. I've never had moussaka, but I was able to break it down into things I do have reference for (cream, potato, beef, tomato), and sort of jam out from there.

I tried to think of what I think of when I eat food and realized my first reference point is texture and then emotion and THEN flavor. I'm more Scott than Edgar in that sense.

so this is a big, long rant about sexism in the idv community bc it's been on my mind lately and i need to put it out there. this is what i've observed after almost four years in the fandom and been stewing on for a long-ass time. if you don't feel like reading an essay on how annoyed some random enby on the internet is, then don't click the read more and just keep scrolling. don't interact with this post if all you're gonna do is get mad; i'm not here to piss anyone off, just make observations. and if this isn't your experience, good for you and please direct me to whatever circles you run in because i need to be there.

so, i've noticed that the idv fandom is extremely shit when it comes to how they treat female characters, and nobody really.. talks about it?? the only person i've ever seen actually discuss it used it as a way to drum up sympathy for ada. which, if you know me, you know really fucking pisses me off. because there are SO MANY OTHER EXAMPLES of sexism in this community, but no, clearly because we have sympathy for a male victim of abuse we're being sexist towards his abuser.

the thing is. there is so much to point to when you talk about how the fandom is sexist. it's very common to see female characters boiled down to just a couple traits. mary?? hot mommy step on me. michiko?? soft and gentle and demure (don't think i won't notice the weird shit about how that's a very common stereotype of asian women btw i see it). demi?? hot and drinks a lot. emma and lily are "uwu mentally ill babies". annie is soft. emily is either an irredeemable monster or a bitch, depending on who you're talking to. patricia is scary and mean. sangria's a girlboss, grace is soft and gentle, martha is spunky. and if you ask anyone their thoughts / ideas on these characters beyond those short descriptors you get nothing. i'm starting to fucking hate the word "girlboss" because it's all anyone says in response to like half these characters.

male characters are given alllllll the nuance in the world you can't talk to an aesop fan without them going into their endless headcanons / theories on why he's the way he is or how he's not actually that bad of a person or how cute he is or whatever. look at norton, or eli, or orpheus, or luca, or edgar, or joseph, or ithaqua, or any characters in that vein, and look at how the fandom treats them. look at the endless fanfictions and character studies and ships and x readers and headcanons. and then look at what female characters get. nowhere near that much.

i feel like margaretha and emily are the ones who suffer the most from this male-centric view by the fandom. they're characters who are inherently intricate, whose actions can't be explained away as entirely good or entirely bad. but that doesn't stop people from actively trying. they're going to act like margaretha wasn't being horrifically mistreated by her husband and just decided to burn down the circus for funsies or whatever. they're going to act like emily isn't trying so fucking hard to help emma and repent for what she's done. neither of them are meant to be read as black-and-white, but people will try because if they have to use more than two braincells on a female character they're going to implode.

meanwhile you get paragraph after paragraph about the intricacies of the argument between luca and alva. you get so many people analysing the relationship between norton and orpheus and how they're both kinda dicks but also both kinda have points. you get endless people defending joseph's actions bc his brother's dead and he's terrified of growing old / forgetting the people he loved / dying. you get so many fucking stories about how y'know, edgar's not that bad actually.

AND I'M NOT AGAINST ANALYSING THESE CHARACTERS!!! idv, especially in recent years, has been doing some great things with character writing. like, fuck 'em, they've got their issues, but they're still really good with some stuff and deserve credit. but don't act like it's not obvious how so many people have overlooked women (and poc, don't think i've noticed people ignoring the intricacies behind william and ganji as characters as well in favour of "himbo" and "bastard who cares", but i'm white so that's not exactly my place to talk) in favour of their favourite skinny whiteboy of the week.

they're that way with older-looking characters, too. if an idv guy has facial hair, you bet your ass he's also getting boiled down to his base traits. jose's an alcoholic, kevin is self-sacrificing and likes women, kurt is a little guy, kreacher is Awful, charles basically doesn't fucking exist anymore. but again not the focus of the talk atm.

it's just. so upsetting. esp. since most of my favourite idv characters are women but everyone i talk to about them is like "oh yeah demi's hot" or "aww annie's such a nervous little baby" or "god patricia's such a cool girlboss". and even when the shit they say is positive in a vacuum it still makes me so upset bc THAT'S NOT ALL THEY ARE!! demi is kind and loving and hardworking in the face of a world that only ever hurt her. annie's life has been an endless stream of pain and heartbreak and the only thing she really wants is freedom. patricia is literally cursed and is trying to find her place in the world.

also. i fucking hate ada but she falls victim to this too. as much as i despise the "you dislike her just bc you're sexist" thing and as horribly uncomfortable as she makes me, don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character is boiled down to how much she "loves" this man. don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character, all of her promise and potential, is forgotten in favour of that fucking trainwreck of a relationship. i bet half the fandom can't tell me anything about her other than her relationship with emil. emil suffers from this too, with his backstory and personality and life of abuse becoming an afterthought, but again, not what we're focusing on.

this is not an isolated thing or confined solely to the idv fandom. this happens in fandoms everywhere. but because idv is so close to my heart i feel like i really need to talk about it. there's so little content of female characters when there's fucking daily content of male ones. and don't get me wrong, i do like male characters. norton is literally one of my favourite fictional characters and i love talking about / analysing him. but i can guarantee a lot of people wouldn't be so interested in him if he was a woman.

sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. mandatory "this doesn't apply to everyone in the fandom" and "if this doesn't apply to you then i'm not fucking talking about you". we were so against the ashley wood collaboration bc of how much he sexualised michiko (and women in general) but like. do y'all really care that much?? bc i really don't think you do.

I wanna talk about this show (btw pls watch it, it's so fucking good, the characters are peak and the animation is fucking amazing!):

Episode 1:

-I can't believe they foreshadowed the final boss with fucking Sonic trivia

-Ngl if I asked out a girl and she didn't know anything about neither Sonic or X-Men, I'm dipping the first chance I get

-I was wondering why Scott had the star t-shirt at the beginning, since he only got that at the finale battle with Gideon, to signify his love for Ramona, but with the added context it's not supposed to matter, it's there because it's his most recognizable look

-Matthew's entrance doesn't have the same umph as the movie's. His actor really went all out in that scene, XD

-Sucks that Scott wasn't very involved in this, since he is the title character, but I still loved everything about this. Hope we get to see his arc in the next season

Episode 2:

-Why is Ramona dyeing her hair so damn satisfying?

-Edit: The fact that STEPHEN of all people was the one that gave Scott a euology and was the only one that actually gave a damn XD

And it's pretty sweet that he would have been ok to find out if they sucked, if they found out they sucked together

-Brie Larston is so talented; if I didn't already know she played Envy, I honestly could not tell that was her, but then again I only know her as Captain Marvel, where she has a deeper and much cooler voice

-So, if in the Scott Pilgrim world people just re-spawn at home after being defeated, does that mean that there no one can be murdered or manslaughtered? And if so, how do people actually get a "permanent game over"? Does everyone just die of old age? Also if people bury the coins dropped after someone dies, would that make grave-robbing the most common crime in the world?

-The fact that all Matthew needed to defeat Gideon was confidence is actually very inspiring. The probable reason why he's so extra (besides being a theater kid) is because Ramona dumped him, which really hurt his self-esteem. And while it's kinda sad and pathetic to let a middle school break-up bring down your self-worth, that doesn't mean it didn't suck for Matthew; and after realizing that Ramona wouldn't take him back just because he beat Scott, he finally got a reality check and decided that their goal was pointless, so he moved on from Ramona and decided to make something out of himself, and using the confidence he got from "beating" Scott, he unleashed his true power and was able to defeat Gideon, take his company, and then became successful Broadway actor

-"Et tu, eat me." Roxie is a fucking queen

Episode 3:

-Hey, I didn't asked to be fucking attacked about my writting process, Scott Pilgrim!

-Knives getting more character development besides being obsessed with Scott is everything I didn't know I ever wanted

And while we're on that, anyone think it's weird that nearly single girl in the comic had or still has a crush on Scott? Like, seriously? This asshole, really? And you just know that if it was a manga made in Japan, Stacie would have a goddamn bro-con complex with him

-Idk how I feel about them just glossing over Gideon just being an absolute monster; like yeah, Ramona was a bitch with most of her relationships and she does tend to run away from her problems, but Gideon was a manipulative, ego-centric, abusive piece of shit. I mean, the guy kept his 6 ex-girlfriends frozen in stasis for appearences or for whatever else he wanted, and he wanted to do the same to Ramona. I like him and Julie being assholes together, but seriously, I hope they touch on that in season 2

-Dude fuck those kids, I would give Gordon so much respect for actually trying that; I wish I had a third of his confidence

-I never knew I needed to see Captain America and The Spot being goofy friends until now

-I headcanon that one of the reasons why they had Matthew take over Gideon's company was so they could finally give him a job XD, tho it was always insinuated that he was in the army, because of the Private Rank patch on his jacket, which they removed in this version and that really sucka because I liked that little detail; it was also another reference to him being the 1st Evil Ex, because Private is the 1st rank in the military

-At least Ramona does recognize that what she did was messed up, even if the Twins were also being dicks, she should have just called them both out and be done with them

-When Old Scott spoke, I thought it was Ben Schwartz at first lol

-I love how the world isn't the cliché "terrible post apocalyptic world caused by something that happened to the main character", it just looks really crappy, which... yeah, accurate; the look everyone has just seems to be the current fad, they just embraced the post-apocalyptic looking world they live in.

Also that tech is not that advanced, they have hover vehicles and board, and holo-phones, that does seem like they kind of tech we could have in a few decades, maybe

-The fucking Virtual Boy XD XD XD, surprised Scott's eyes weren't on fire after staring into that thing

-I think it's dumb they gave Knives her look from the comics without any reason. She only changed her look to look more appealing to Scott in the comics, and in the epilogue she's back to her normal look, like, at least have people mention the look and her saying that she's trying something new

Edit: I rewatched the whole thing and I just realized that Even Older Scott punched the highlights out of Knives' hair XD

-It's basically a meme at this point, but pls have the Katayanagi Twins do something! They had such a bigger role in the comics. At least I wanted to see their combo moves animated!

It's nice that the Exes are actually cheering for them to kiss, or maybe they're just teasing because they can't; either way it's nice

-Even Older Scott is Ramona's 8th evil ex. He debuts in the 8th episode and has studied the powers of all the other 7 Evil Exes along with his own, which adds up to 8.

Sucks he didn't actually use their powers, I would have loved it if he used Vegan Powers combined with mystical powers, maybe instead of Demon Hipster Chicks he summons little Nega Scotts, he has stronger skateboard tricks than Lucas, he some robot arms that can shoot lasers and can help him do the Twins' combo moves, but doubled

-Edit: The fact that Knives went for Ramona instead of Scott. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!!

-Even Older (Nega) Scott is just Evil Ryu and I fucking love it!!

-Even Older Scott's color scheme not only signifyes just how jaded and lost he's become, but also that Nega Scott has completely taken him over is just *chef's kiss*

-Sex Bob-Bomb became the new Crash and the Boys, except that instead of having an 8-year-old, they have a 17-year-old.

-Looks like Ramona actually enjoyed the stunt double gig. Good for her, tho honestly, she should have stuck with Netflix, Idk why, but I feel like they're gonna blow up at somepoint

-I like the idea of Lucas x Kim, but I would still prefer Knives x Kim, and my personal made-up ship: Lucas x Stacie. I just love big bois with cute smol gfs

-At first, it didn't make sense to see Todd and Roxie hanging out, but then I realized that just like Roxie, Todd was hurt by someone who treated their relationship like an un-important after-thought, a phase; and just broke it up like it was nothing, without any consideration for the other's feelings. And now that Roxie got closure with Ramona she's helping him to move on from this in a way healthier way than she did. (That and they're both gay) That is so fucking wholesome, I need to see them being friends in season 2 pls!! Also sucks she didn't interact much with Matthew, because Satya Bhabha said that he thinks Matthew and Roxie would be friends.

Oh god, I get shivers every time I remember how Heathcliff forcefully married Catherin to Linton... He literally locked her up, like BRO. OK, we are in the earth building, kitsunes attacked with (magical) archers, who managed to shoot arrows from ground to roof (90 floors, seems legit). Our group split, but we have found them. Koori is again in bad shape, Leiftan stays close to her because (sadly) Beemoov decided that she will be that one person who helps him heal. Oh well. Nevra's reaction to Erika, Edgar and Mathieu appearing:

Then... why didn't you send one of your team to let them know where you are? To check on them? Edgar didn't say anything, btw. Nevra intimidated him again. Erika takes hurt familiar (that dragon thing) to Koori because no, having your Gardienne in Absinth means nothing to Beemoov. She cannot do a thing with healing and potions. You know who can tho? Koori! Not only she is a healer adapt at potions and treating injuries, she also knows kitsune magic and illusions. You know Beemoov, I guess we could play ANE with Koori as our MC. Main quest would be claiming back our throne,  and we would take what is ours. With fire and blood, we will take it. Ahem.

Lance shows how compasionate he is, by caring about familiar. It is not a bad trope, but when you know what will happen later, and knowing that neither Lance nor Nevra showed much care for Edgar, A LIVING THINKING PERSON is a bit... Miiko was also v sweet for familiars, but hostile towards Gardienne at the begining of TO. And yes, there are plp like them- but it is not a positive thing, and I would love ANE to address it, or stop wasting my maana on familiars. Edgar is much more interesting character than my familiar/dragon-thin will ever be. #teamcorcoforever

At least Koori is observant- she noticed that arrows are same as used in tenjin's army. Not that there was much options- at least I had not a feeling that many tribes live in Genkaku, but it's a nice touch. Anyway, Nevra managed to gather some infos with his vampiric powers:

The fact he is doing neither doesn't make sense. Anyway, Nevra decideds it's time to evacuate:

Blah blah, the rest is sleeping/resting. At least I learnt that Edgar has stayed here for one week (?). We are wasting maana on Erika playing with stapler (and why my autocorrect has written strap on I wonder), the writers of ANE are... something. This would be a perfect moment to add some ROMANCE- Erika fearing for Mathieu's and Nevra's safety, or wondering whether Leiftan is feeling ok now, or wondering that Lance has shown such care for a familiar. 2-4 sentences that could be a build up for an ending scene on ship. But no, waste it for nothing. Finally, after an hour Erika got bored and approach Lance, because I have no choice. There is not much choice in ANE, to be frank.

Because guardsmen arrows are different, they make the least possible damage to victim. FFS, it's again about familiar! You have a victim, a hurt, scared and confused HUMAN next to you! At least show him some care!

dammit. familiars again. so this will be a reccuring theme in ANE. Shortly: maripods, sersea and warrifangs are acting much more aggressively than usual.

Lance has his Disney Princess moment, with that famliar suddenly trusting him and cuddling. I guess it's cute? Dunno, we are in rollercoaster between v childlish moments and people dying like flies so. It's hard for me to switch my mood so quickly. But look, we have a chance to make our LOM higher. I do not care for Lance, but you know. He seems ok here so:

Erika got another superpower to collection: she can now sense familiars emotions. Kinda. Pity, it didn't work on Mathieu... but I digress. A hint on how she is a part of Eldarya's spirit now? With all that "I have more connection to Eldarya than to Earth" and her being part of Crystal? A final sacrifice at the end of ANE in making?

Anyway, Erika admits to Lance:

And why do plp keep cats, mices, dogs? For emotional support, Erika admits. So far she didn't make familiars very much different from our animals. She could just say that familiars are very inteligent, and that some of them have special, magical powers. Erika is v bad with any explanations, and this scene works only because Edgar is v sweet here, being interested in Eldarya, and even slowly accepting his fate. BTW, 100+ maana, and Leiftan, my LI is mentioned ONCE- that he is still in the same room.

Enough with familiars, Nevra and Mathieu are gone for 2 hours and the rest talk about it. We got this little info about Nevra (for anyone who didn't know him in TO it's a good information, and nicely written, you can get what kind of person he is now):

Wait, what, Edgar? It was too zen for me. Aaaah, in the hall it's too dark to notice the daylight dying. They decided to follow Mathieu and Nevra and try to get out from building: the deadline given by Tenjin is almost out. BTW, Beemoov again decided to give that draflayel 4 lines of dialogue.

We meet Nevra and Mathieu at the hall. They have fought earlier, but I have reached limits of screenshots for this post so this is the end.

Thoughts on this episode?

Too much time spent on familiar, while we left Edgar or even Koori forgotten. Too little time spent with our LI. So far the action parts are v chaotic. The mission/science is very vague, childlish. It's how a person who doesn't know a thing about diplomacy and military imagine war plans are made and prepared.

Erika's feelings for Eldarya seems superficial: she is excited when seeing or petting cute familiars, but she is not v eager to get to know kitsunes or their culture. Pretty clothes, "adventure", thinking about cool war cry, saving pretty princess? Yes, but wondering how they can solve their diplomatic crisis with whole kingdom of Genkaku is not crucial for her. I really have a feeling like I am reading a story about 13 years old girl, not an adult, responsible and wise woman who is capable of taking care of two worlds.

GENERATION 4 dolls are now sooooo super illegal now btw. being in possession of one is punishable by death of both you and the doll. oh shit! byron is dead now but his daughter priscilla is hiding alone with jasper in the family home!! actually let’s pause the narrative for a minute for a super funky ballad about how new albion was created! a monk and a gambler are arguing about things (god and chance and fate) and to resolve they decide a game of cards indeed be played. anyway they play this card game for literally ages like one of them would have to die for it to end. so as they’re playing this seemingly never ending game of probably uno, around them is built a shelter and then more and more buildings until what do you know? the city of new albion is born! also btw remember when i said one of them would have to die for the game to end? what luck! the gambler has a heart attack or something and dies!! anyway back to jasper and priscilla. they are playing a never ending game of cards to pass the time :)) jasper still wants to die but he doesn’t want to leave priscilla alone or let her die bc she’s the only person he’s ever cared about :( but priscilla doesn’t want jasper to suffer but jasper doesn’t want priscilla to sacrifice herself. um anyway she calls the police on herself and jasper and her get shot :( also there’s a soldier called 24601 or something idk. anyway he doesn’t shoot and everyone is like soldier 7285 you fucking pussy why didn’t you fire. and he didn’t fire bc he realized Hm Maybe This Is Fucked Up. so he decides to do a revolution that will end the police state of new albion.

i have no experience confessing to a crush but that shit seems so stressful 😭😭 (“please abduct me wednesday” is killing me btw) but a poem seems like a terrible way to do it idk. maybe that’s just cause i can’t write one well LMAO. and yes!!! a goldie! one of the three breeds i know of<3

the way “i’m pregnant” was just the first thing i thought of while writing SJSHSJ. i meant to change it but i guess it’s a good thing i didn’t 🙏 and yeah choklit is….a name!!! lol. the eurovision song reference was everything btw. that song was a Bop.

pls i had to read so many article and explanations about all those poetry terms (besides alliteration) because my stupid ass was just not comprehending it…poetry is so much more complex than i thought it was, respect to the poetry girlies bc i’m never touching this stuff again 😭🤚

thinkin' about 80s Jack some more

this song has been stuck in my head for a while nd I can't believe I didn't start thinking of him until recently... the guitar riff and the lyrics fit him v well imo

the music video for this song (which you should totally watch btw, it's animated and has a strong visual style) depicts a man who dedicated his life to ascending military ranks to become an astronaut, rejecting things like a love life, friends, a family, etc. and soon after he's successfully launched into space, Earth blows up in front of him. he gets signal from who he thinks is a blonde-haired woman and regains a sense of hope, fantasizing about starting a family with her; this drives him to break out of his rocket and use debris (and his limited oxygen) to jump over to the station she's in. upon which.. she is found to be a he (at least yk thats what we're meant to assume) who had obtained significant facial hair growth after the point the message was filmed. he gets pissed off, injures the blond man, and retreats. and then they play vidya game together.

the lyrics talk of this intense desperation to find a "way out", a "way to make me happy", and committing your everything to try and achieve it after a life of emptiness. which.. makes me think of the obvious- the lovebirds. specifically all that Jack puts on Eddie's shoulders. he's his hopes, dreams, tears, and flesh, and he only starts to realize how much he needs him when he sees him start to slip away. I think they both provided some kind of escape to each other, at least at first. Jack was whimsy and adventure and adrenaline and everything he'd never known; Edgar was stability and innocence and love and everything HE'D never known. they bonded together as tight as atoms in a covalent bond.

he's useless without him, and he knows it. he knows he can't find another person who will cling to him as strongly as Edgar did.

Jack needs him. but he doesn't need Jack.
