top 5 horror book recommendations? it's spooky season and i need to get my read on...
Hell yeah! Gonna break this down a little. First an obligatory rehash of books I always recommend for this, these are like all-time faves for me
Wounds/North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud - can't choose between these two, so they're tied for my favorite single author short story collection. Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite writers of all time
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - a very very close second for my favorite single-author short story collection. Machado is a beautiful writer and finding an author writing such powerful horror from a queer woman's perspective was world changing for me.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - COME ON!!!! You might have already read this but consider reading it again! Absolute classic.
The Cipher by Kathe Koja - dark, fucked up meditation on art and addiction and toxic relationships. I think about this book all the time. A guy finds a weird hole in his apartment basement and then everything goes wrong (first slowly and then very very quickly)
Red X by David Demchuk - talked about this a lot before too but I really do love it. Fictional story inspired by real life serial killings that took place in Toronto's gay village over decades. The author inserts essays throughout the book that makes it part memoir as well. A supernatural story about real queer trauma.
--
Okay with that out of the way, here's some recommendations for stuff I think would be fun for Halloween specifically
Echoes edited by Ellen Datlow - OKAY CHEATING I ALSO RECOMMEND THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT'S A PERFECT OCTOBER BOOK!!! Fuck-off huge ghost story anthology. Huge range of tones, pretty diverse group of contributing authors, it's my all-time favorite anthology.
Slewfoot by BROM - this one's got major autumn vibes. It's a story of a woman in Puritan New England who's accused of witchcraft. It's also a story about the devil. Kind of. The print version has really amazing paintings by the author, but I've heard this is also good in audio.
Come Closer by Sara Gran - this is a great little novella. Possession story that really packs a punch. I can't really say much more than that, but it's not a huge time investment and I think it's really worthwhile.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu - if you can, get the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado (she adds in some great footnotes and it has some neat art too). This is a classic and also quite a brisk read. The original lesbian vampire story.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - here's a new release for you! I always watch a ton of horror movies in October, and if you're anything like me maybe you'll want to read a horror novel about horror movies. This story follows a female film editor in 90s Mexico and her washed up actor friend as they help a retired filmmaker complete his famously unfinished last film, which he had been making with a former Nazi occultist before strange misfortunes and the occultist's mysterious disappearance forced production to shut down.
Okay that was double the amount of recommendations requested so I'm stopping here. Haha don't look in the tags don't worry about it there's nothing there you're crazy

Hello! I was wondering what movies, tv, books, anime etc. you are into?
Hi! Oh that's such a broad question. I could be here talking all day about my favourite media, so instead I'll pick a few from each category, either a recent favourite or an all time favourite.
Books: RotE by Robin Hobb is an all time fave, especially the Fitz and Fool trilogies (although they break my heart 😭). A more recent favourite is Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson. Another all time fave is Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin, I swear I think about this book as I go about my day and it hits me like a gut punch and I want to cry 😭 it's so so good
Anime: my favourite anime of all time that's something of a comfort watch is Darker Than Black. I can’t even explain what I love about it so much, other than the fact that it rewired my brain when I first watched it and it like keeps rewiring it every time I rewatch it lol. It has so many of the elements that I love in stories and it has inspired the hell out of me over the years. Another favourite is Berserk, I've also read the manga which is kind of rare for me to do bc I'm not a fan of manga and comics as much but I just needed to see what happens after the anime left me hanging. It has really had a profound impact on me, I can’t even tell you how often I think about it.
TV: hmm. That's when things get tricky for me because I immediately forget shows I've watched after I'm done watching them 🤣 But some faves over the years have been: Dark (the german netflix drama), War and Peace, Les Miserables (both BBC productions if I remember correctly), Midnight Mass and Midnight Club (GUTTED that it never got a season 2), and another one that I think was really underrated and should also have gotten a second season was Archive 81. Very interesting premise, very atmospheric and spooky, I love eldritch horror stories and that really hit the spot 😩
Films: even MORE tricky if possible bc I'm ten times worse with movies than with shows 🤣 Most of the time after I walk out of the cinema I'm like... well, that was a movie alright, and proceed to forget all about it. But some that have stuck with me over the years are: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which has been a fave since forever. Also The Notebook had a huuuuge impact on me, I know a lot of people think it's cringe now but I don’t care, I feel like it's part of my brain chemistry lol. Howl's Moving Castle is a comfort watch, and no matter how many times I watch The Big Lebowski I always find something funny. Sin City is also another one of those films that I feel are permanently embedded into my consciousness, I watched it as a teenager and I was shook by the aesthetics and the storylines and have watched it many times since.
Anyway that's just a small selection of my favourite stuff. I guess a lot of what I love in media is angst and drama and like being emotionally intense in places! My favourites tend to be those that really tugged at my heartstrings in some way, and also a lot of them have a darker twist and maybe delve into difficult or uncomfortable subjects.

Hii! So every time I see your username on discord or here I always wanna ask you about it but then I don’t cause I’m socially awkward as heck and I don’t wanna seem like a weirdo - but here I am anyway - so, are you into horror movies??? I love finding horror movie fans in the wild cause I feel like none of my friends are into them 😭 who’s your fave final girl?? And what are your fave movies??
Oh my gosh. Thank you, thank you for asking this!!
If you don't mind, I'm gonna use this to go HARD lol.
I would dedicate far more of this tumblr to the genre if I could but I don't want to assault everyone's eyes with it, teehee.
Hello fellow horror fan! I'm so glad someone noticed!! Yes, I am a HUGE horror fanatic. It's like a major part of my identity!!! I love horror movies, video games, books, literally all things spooky. I've got posters all over my apartment, a stupid amount of trinkets, including a Pyramid Head plushie that's my pride and joy. :)
Horror is a fantastic genre brimming with creative ideas and it is such a healthy outlet for the anxieties of life. It is also uniquely relevant for the social scientist in me. Horror can provide great insights into how social problems become ingrained in the public consciousness, shedding light on the fears and concerns of different eras, especially in the last 100 or so years since the film industry was created. I took a monster-themed class on college last year, and am following it up with a film studies course this next semester. I write a lot about the monstorous feminine and gender studies in relation to the horror. Because, as horror reflects the concerns of the outside world, how women get treated within them is fascinating material to explore power dynamics, social expecations, and persistent fears. One of my favorites was a piece I did on feminist commentary in 2019's Ready or Not. My graduating project is going to be a zine-style work where I'm choosing 4 different horror films with 4 core aspects of the female experience and I'm so excited to start it!
To actually answer your question, my favorite horror films as of now go as:
Scream (1996) The Thing (1982) Alien (1979) Ready or Not (2019)
Special mentions go out to Carrie (1976), Halloween (1978), REC (2007), Ginger Snaps (2000), and recents such as X and Barbarian. :)
Extra special mention, my favorite horror video games are Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill 2. (Very creative, I know, lol.)
As Scream is my favorite horror series, I'd have to say Sidney Prescott is my favorite final girl. She's just such a resilient badass and I love all of the Scream films and her journey so much!
Thank you again! I hope my excitement isn't overwhelming! Feel free to message to chat about it any time!

More Festivids recs!
There’s still, uh....*checks watch*....five hours until reveals, so now that I finally have a morning to myself I thought I would toss some more recs out there. I have 45 vids bookmarked and love so many of them, but here are a few favorites:
Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Doctor Sleep): Spooky and intense!
ENERGY (Everything Everywhere All at Once): Flawless editing, tons of pizzazz, and a wonderful highlight of my favorite scene (the Waymond fanny pack fight scene)!
Higher Love (Everything Everywhere All at Once): This one is about all the love and all the humanity and all the feelings in the movie and it just overwhelms me. It makes me have so many feelings about hot dog!verse!
Kinky (How to Build a Sex Room): I’ll admit, I had to peace out on the source due to secondhand embarrassment, but this is such a fun and joyful look at all the best parts of the show! Everyone is having so much FUN.
20 Years (Jumanji): A masterful combination of the original film and the new films, that uses the sometimes silly source to tell a very emotional story about lost time.
The Cartographer (Jumanji): I have way too many actual, sincere feelings about Jack Black playing a teenage girl and this vid hits every one of them. What a great song for Bethany!
Dangerous Woman (Love and Leashes): Okay, uhhhhhhh, I NEED to see this source. This is so sexy and I love the way it centers the female character’s story arc and the way she comes into her own! I also really enjoyed the other vid for this movie, “Smile.”
Gimme More (Nope): “They keep watching.”
Get This Podcast Started (Only Murders in the Building): I was just cracking up from start to finish!
Dance With Somebody (Rocky): There was such a bonanza of homoerotic ‘80s cheese this Festivids! I also loved the other two Rocky vids in the collection. (And loved that all three of them focused on Apollo Creed, my fave.)
Free. (Severance): Helly R., my beloved.
The Working Dead (Severance): Manages to capture an immense feeling of dread and tremendous horror movie vibes using just an hysterical song choice.
Tom Paine’s Bones and Wannabe (Talk of the Town): Two (two!!!!) amazing vids about one of my favorite OT3s!
Butterflies & Hurricanes (Taskmaster UK): I mean, it’s the bonkers constructed reality vid of the exchange. What else is there to say about this masterpiece.
Loser (Taskmaster UK): I could watch these people lose all day. Great lyric matching.
Sleeping in Your Garden (Thoroughbreds): Wonderfully edited and very creepy. This movie really wormed its way into my brain when I saw it and this vid captures everything I like best about it.
Finally, all of the terrific League of Their Own vids—all about different characters!—have convinced me I need to get around to watching that show.

So as I said in my previous post, I peeked at a few spoilers just to assure myself that at least the kids would be alright.
Well, I did wonder if the episode would end with at least one person trapped in the Human Realm, but I wasn't expecting Luz to be one of them. But at least Hunter and Amity and Willow and Gus are alright. They'll have to hide their ears, though. I also saw a slight spoiler about a reference to Amphibia, but I didn't think it would be that blatant and imply that they're in the same world at the same time.
I wasn't really that surprised at Belos betraying the Collector. I mean, it's another magic being, so of course he would trick him just like everyone else. Seems like we were all wrong about Luz getting possessed, though, but he does still look very similar to her with a physical form.
I was a bit surprised that Kikimora knew about what happened to the previous Golden Guards. Did she know they were Grimwalkers too? Did she try to kill Hunter all those episodes ago because she was hoping Belos would give up, or that the next one wouldn't be in a higher position than her?
Some of us thought that Luz would make a deal with the Collector, but I wasn't expecting it to be King who made the deal. The way he talked reminded me a lot of a certain other character with just about the exact same voice who is known for making deals and using trickery.
The Collector is seriously powerful, though, he's basically a reality warper if he was able to move the entire moon that effortlessly. Hopefully everyone will be alright now. I'm not sure if Hunter not passing out was because of his lack of magic or out of sheer determination, but I was relieved it didn't come to that. Well, I wouldn't have minded if he'd recovered before the episode ended, that's part of the uncertainty I was worried about.
The end of the credits scared me a bit, though. It makes me think that Belos isn't completely gone...

To tell the truth, I'm kind of disappointed that the Owl House and Amphibia are coming back at the same time. I like both shows, but I don't want one to overshadow the other. And since Amphibia is ending soon and even if there's a hiatus between the end of TOH S2 and the specials, that means we'll once again be left without new content once those seasons have ended, as opposed to having them come back at different times.

My #1 post of 2022
Before I watch the last 2 episodes of this season, I would like to know:
Without spoiling too much, do any of the characters end up in a cliffhanger situation that we'll most likely have to wait months to see if they survive (or get brought back if they were temporarily killed in some way)? And if so, is it any of the adults, or are any of the kids included too? And again if so, is it Luz getting possessed by the Collector like a lot of us have predicted (I don't mind having that spoiled for me as long as I don't know how or why it happens)?
If any of the kids are included and it's not Luz being possessed by the Collector (we know she'll be alright in the end cause she's the main character), I might put off watching it for longer until closer to when the third season starts. It depends on what it is, though. If it's being incapacitated or imprisoned in any way (or temporarily killed as I mentioned before) then that's what I'm afraid of, but if it's simply being trapped in the human world or on the run or de-powered but otherwise fine and not in a seriously injured state then I can live with that.

Note: Ten favorite monsters, part four. Part three. Once a month sounds good for a top ten list, yeah? Only it’s hard for me to actually rank cool monsters. Cuphead has an absurd amount of great character designs. I’ve decided to limit one Disney entry per monster list. Oh, and it was hard to get a good photo of the Time Dragon. This one doesn’t show his horns, multi-story theatre, or the mob of Munchkinlanders.
1. Aylmer from Brain Damage
Vaguely phallic… brain eating parasite drug metaphor.
2. Two-Mouthed Wall from Cuphead
Architectural monsters are a fave of mine in their own right. (See Baba Yaga’s house.) Bonus points for being part of a funhouse and letting his friends drive through him.
3. nuts from Face Like a Frog
This is one of my favorite cartoon shorts. It came out before Rugrats, but its music and deranged animation reminds me of my childhood fave, only more surreal. And Face Like a Frog’s surreality is easily explained: the house is occupied by nuts.
4. Planet Remina from Hellstar Remina
Look, I’m headcanoning this planet as a lady. Because there needs to be more female eldritch abomination representation. Also, she has a pretty name. Like, yeah, she was named after the daughter of the male astronomer who discovered her. Anyway, like Junji Ito manga in general, it’s better just to see for yourself how horrifying the antagonist is.
5. siren from Martin Mystery
They opted to make her whole body more avian, so there’s a mass of feathers covering her mammaries. (If she even has those in her true form.) The addition of a beak is another feature I like. Also, the reptilian tail is a nice “ancient” touch.
6-8. werewolves
Ginger Snaps trilogy: If you want interesting female-led horror, watch the first two films. Unleashed is one of the best horror films ever just for the characters’ multilayered moralities.
Hemlock Grove: The dialogue is so odd. But it contains one of the best gruesome transformations. And male nudity.
Teen Wolf: You’d think I wouldn’t like a series where most werewolves can’t fully transform into a wolf. Or the fact they’re vaguely cat-like, with roaring and retractable claws. The Alpha-Beta-Omega hierarchy is clearly (wolf)man-made, but still fun. A supernatural drama that doesn’t take itself too seriously is a beautiful thing. Maybe I should add the Chimeras to another list, because I love “mix-and-match” monstrous humans.
9. Clock of the Time Dragon from the Wicked Years
Clockpunk meets puppet theatre and dark fantasy.
10. Heffalumps from Winnie the Pooh
The spooky ones from “Heffalumps and Woozles” as well as Lumpy and co. The Hundred Acre Woods has cute living stuffed animals.
Note: I didn’t realize Remina’s eye was so yonic. XD Clawdeen Wolf is a runner-up for werewolves because she’s a hairy-legged fashionista. Expect more wereanimals on future lists.

so I was doing some research after watching movie 6...
...and apparently it was originally written as a comedy
Tumblr media
Yeah, I was surprised, too
Baron Omatsuri is not my favorite One Piece movie—Film Z has too many of my favorite tropes to be usurped from that position—but I do think it is the most daring. Of all the supplemental material I’ve seen and read, it feels the least...One Piece-ish.
Yes, that includes the noodle commercials.
If you haven’t seen the movie and can stomach a little spookiness, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. Unlike movies like Strong World or Z that have the look and feel of a manga arc, Movie 6 transplants the Straw Hat Pirates into a world that doesn’t feel like a One Piece story, taking risks and exploring themes that would never fit in the manga proper.
In addition to the obvious changes in art and animation style, there are supernatural elements that don’t make sense within the One Piece world. None of the Straw Hats win a fight—Luffy included, although he is heavily implied to have killed the big bad at the end. The moral of the movie, if it can be said to have a moral, is if you lose the people closest to you, the answer is to forget about them and make new friends. The story ends with many questions left unanswered and the main drama between the crew unresolved.
And, if you allow me to get philosophical for a moment, I wish there were more movies like it. As I wrote in my review of Novel A, I don’t go to supplemental material or side stories looking for a repeat of what’s in the manga. Oda has written 1000 chapters of One Piece—why not spice things up a little and try something different for a change?
I know the answer isn’t that simple, and by their very nature not all risks will pan out. There will be people who don’t like this movie because it’s different, both in look and tone. But there’s something to be said about a creator putting their heart and soul into a work and having it show in the final product.
Which brings us back to the original premise. How does a movie go from a light-hearted comedy based on a variety show theme to...this
Tumblr media
Baron Omatsuri was directed by Mamoru Hosoda and came out in 2005. To put that into perspective, the movie was in production when the Luffy vs Usopp fight was first seen in the manga. Manga!Luffy had not yet faced the challenge of an inter-crew disputes when the story was being written and boarded, nor did the creative team have the events of Sabaody and Marineford to see how Luffy would react to the loss of his loved ones. They were working without a full understanding of Luffy’s character, and to a lessor extent the character of the Straw Hat Pirates, and it seems like Oda was much less involved In production than has been in movies since Strong World and beyond.
Likewise, Hosoda had just left a tumultuous situation at Studio Ghibli while working on Howl’s Moving Castle, and if this interview is anything to go by (https://instrangeaeonsblog.wordpress.com/2016/04/24/mamoru-hosoda-on-omatsuri-danshaku-animestyle-interview-part-1/) was going through a lot of personal shit when he was brought on as director. The script he was given was originally written like a variety show—something that was carried over into the various trials seen in the final movie—and meant to be a lighthearted affair after the relatively serious Movie 5 (which I have not seen am thus unable to compare tone).
With that backstory in mind, it’s easy to see how the bickering and backbiting between the Straw Hats early in the movie is a metaphor for Hosoda’s time at Ghibli, which is something he admits to in the interview. Movie 6 feels different than any other One Piece movie because it’s the project of a man who has had to endure the loss of those who he was close with, at least in a professional capacity.
There are moments in Movie 6 where Luffy doesn’t feel like Luffy. More than once a member of the Straw Hats ask him to intervene during arguments, moments Luffy either ignores or doesn’t notice. It’s a version of Water 7 where instead of fighting Usopp, Luffy ignores the underlying differences within his crew, and as a result loses everybody.
The structure of the three trials follows a clear path of deterioration within the crew, the initial goldfish scooping game showing the Straw Hats at their best and inciting the jealousy of the Baron, the ring toss sowing discord among the crew even as they snatch a narrow victory, only for them to be utterly crushed in the third and final challenge as they’re unable help one another survive.
It is somewhat implied that the Breaking of the Fellowship(TM) is magical in nature—that like the One Ring, the Lily Carnation was able to influence the Straw Hat’s thoughts and actions, but this is never stated outright and I prefer the more mundane interpretation: That without strong leadership the Straw Hats fell victim to the manipulative machinations of the Baron, and simply self-destructed as a result.  In the end, it’s up to the interpretation of the viewer.
And speaking of things up to interpretation, I love how the Lily Carnation isn’t explained in the slightest. The plant that initially absorbs the Straw Hats looks more like the stem of a devil fruit than a flower, it for some reason rings like a gong when hit, and somehow is able to turn pieces of itself into facsimile of the Baron’s old crew who can somehow move around despite being plans. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and the element of the unknown works so well in the horror-lite setting.
My personal theory is the island somehow managed to eat a devil fruit which manifests itself as the Lily Carnation (which due to the L/R conflation in Japanese, is pronounced ‘reincarnation’, which I think is a nice touch of foreshadowing that may or may not have been intentional).
(Also, I can’t decide if little chewing animation it makes when it’s eating people or the weird bullseyes it makes when shit gets real are the most terrifying thing in the movie.)
Tumblr media
Hmmm, tasty.
Anyway, this is getting long, so here are some final thoughts:
1) This movie has some low key fantastic outfits. The Straw Hats all look very cool without being over designed like a lot of recent movies. Big hat Robin is of course a fave, and makes me really want to see her in a Carmen Sandiego getup.
2) Screenshots do not do the animation of the movie justice. It’s very fluid and has a lot of excellent expressions/poses, although I admit the 3D is jarring at times. Do not let the art put you off if you haven’t seen it
3) Also, I don’t think there’s any shading? Like at all? The movie does a lot of cool stuff with color instead. For example, the scene where Luffy initially loses to the Baron his skin goes all grey, and I thought it was because he was fighting at night, but it stays grey even in the better lighting of the underground tunnels and stays that way until he finds out the Straw Hats are still alive, where it returns to his normal color
4) There’s an extended Benny Hill-type gag when Luffy first chases after the little mustache pirate that’s perfectly timed to the music, and ends when Luffy just uses his power to grab him. The comedic timing is amazing and it’s probably my favorite funny moment in the movie, of which there are several despite the overall darker tone
5) The extended jungle shot from Nami’s POV? Very cool
6) I love how from the earliest scenes nothing is as it seems. The opening text is Robin reading the map, but the storm that’s seen on screen is the one that sank the Baron’s crew. Likewise the whole fancy city is shown to be fake panels early on, the goldfish catching game is a trap, etc., etc. It does a good job clueing the viewer in early that’s something’s very wrong on the island, even if they don’t realize it at first
7) I don’t think this type of movie would work in modern One Piece without somehow nerfing Luffy. Horror works best when the protagonist is weak and vulnerable, and that fits best with a pre-Gear 2/3 Luffy (same with the rest of the crew, tbh. I was waiting for Nami to use her lightning stick during the games, forgetting it hadn’t been boosted yet).
8) I like how there are four captains on the island representing different levels of loss—the Baron has lost his crew and wants to destroy all others because of it, mustache pirate lost his crew and is willing to put it behind him to make new friends, Luffy has freshly lost his crew and hasn’t decided what path he will go, and coward dad hasn’t lost his crew yet but is at risk if he doesn’t change his cowardly ways
9) I think the reason why Chopper was the first Straw Hat to disappear is he’s the most likely to play the part of peacemaker. He’s also the only crew member needing rescuing at the end of the goldfish scoop game, when Luffy foolishly puts his life at risk trying to save him from drowning, just like he recklessly charges the Baron at the end of the movie. Except that time there was no Sanji to save him, leaving Luffy to get his ass thoroughly kicked
10) This is a very good Halloween movie, and I’m glad I watched it in October

How about number 3? Like, tell us all about it if you want :)
Oh my gosh 🥺 thank you so much for giving me my first ask! 💖 I'm eternally grateful I get to spill all my pheels out.
3. What is my favorite Phantom tv/film adaptation?
My absolute favorite Phantom is the 1925 Lon Chaney silent film. He just embodies everything that I like about Gaston Leroux's Erik for me and he is both horrifying and pitiable. I dislike the ending but I can live with it given it's what test audiences wanted at the time. I truly love his Red Death costume. You can find it on Youtube and the Tubi app for free.
My first runner up would be Claude Raines in the 1943 because his Erique so soft and tragic in that film I cannot help but love him. This was one was my grandma's favorite 'classic monster' movies that she loved, so I have a special place in my heart for this one. I love his hair and appreciate that he was one fine silver fox before the revenge and jealousy issues set in. The opera parts are a little boring, but the costumes and the sassy diva rival to Christine are worth the watch. We get 2 handsome Raouls who end up going to dinner together at the end of the movie and a Christine who gets to bask in the limelight of her career while not choosing any suitor, which is the best possible outcome for her. Double play for the win in my book! You can watch it for free on the Peacock app.
My next runner up is a 3 way tie between Robert Englund, Gerard Butler, and Charles Dance.
I honestly enjoy all their performances because they each bring something unique to the role.
I cannot stress enough how violent the Robert Englund version is if you want to give it a go, but Erik Destler is insane, twisted, and fabulously murdertastic in this. I love the creepy, evil vibes the man gives off. Think of this film as a time travel AU of the original novel. I feel like he nailed Leroux Erik's darker, snarky personality that some people tend to forget he had and the gothic horror parts of the original novel are there. Bonus: they keep the Faust parallels like in the novel!
I'm gonna say it: I love the Charles Dance miniseries. I know it's not the best, but damn, he is so dry and sarcastic I cannot help but enjoy his performance. I want to pinch his cheeks and smother Cherik with the love his father never gave him everytime I see him. Again, this one focuses on the operas a lot, and for me it's a bit boring. But the backgrounds, settings, and props in this thing are fantastic and the costumes are wonderful too.
That leaves Gerard Butler in the 2004 movie. No he is not the world's greatest singing Phantom, but I don't care. I absolutely love his facial expressions and body language. The Phantom is an emotional, expressive dude and the Red Death costume scene is pretty good. I love how kind and sincere Emmy feels in this film and I appreciate she's not overracting and doesn't feel fake compared to some other Christines *coughSierracough* Being the film version of the ALW musical, this Phantom story focuses on the romance and Gerard excels at that. When he and Christine are singing Past the Point of no Return, I FEEL THEIR PASSION! And that's what counts more so than hitting the same notes we've all heard a million times before.
Now for the versions in the 'I will eternally like this' category 😊 :
The Phantom of the Paradise from 1974. This is also a very violent and dark film so fair warning if you haven't seen it. It's a bizarre rock musical, but if you're weird like me and enjoy Rock & Rule or the Rocky Horror Picture Show, this might be a film you'd like too. I don't want to spoil it too much but the Faust/devil parallels are here too, as is various pop culture references. His teeth and mask are terrifyingly cool, and so is the electronic voice box he uses. It makes sense Daft Punk was inspired by this film. Maybe G1 Soundwave was inspired by this film too, but that's a debate for another day 😉
Next is the animated 1988 film. This one features animation on par with other 80s tv cartoons of the time. I love that they kept the Persian and the torture chamber from the novel. The Phantom's death scene is pretty damn epic. Christine is kind of a flake, but animated Leroux Erik is hilariously insane and terribly charming, especially when he calls himself a Don Juan. It's worth watching just for his antics and his dialouge.
You might not expect a Goosebumps episode to do a Phantom story any justice, but here we are: 1995, The Phantom of the Auditorium is a spooky fun take on the story and honestly, I'd like to see the full play the kids at that school are putting on cause it looks better than some of the live Phantom stage scenes I've seen. Both young boys playing the Phantom are fantastic actors and the plot twist at the end is great.
I absolutely have to give a shout out to Wishbone's Pantin at the Opera. He is the best, cutest, most adorable Raoul de Chagney ever and I will fight you if you dare talk smack about this version. I'm not even a Raoul stan by any means but like, this dog is precious and I enjoy this episode so much.
Also in the animated category and cute dog category is Scooby Doo Stage Fright made back in 2013. This movie is one of my fave Scooby Doo films (yes I own almost all of them on dvd) and there are multiple Phantoms, a reality tv show contest, and Fred and Daphne finally kiss each other! Lots and lots of hidden Phantom references in the background and lots of voice acting talent for those of us who appreciate that.
Now for the versions I intensely dislike 😏
The 1962 Herbert Lom version. UGH where to start. The sets are so small and everything looks dirty and of the wrong time period. The color in the film looks washed out. The clothes look too modern somehow (maybe it's their hairstyles?) and it bothers me. It feels low budget in a bad way and it shows. This phantom is not likeable or pitiable even though his backstory is similar to the Claude Raines version. He has no romantic interest in Christine, so it feels off. This guy is such an old a$$ piece of sh*t, he literally slaps Christine as she's singing for him for no damn reason. His paper mache mask looks like a Kindergartener's botched art class project. His personality is like somebody locked up cranky grandpa in the basement and he's PMS-ing because y'all forgot to give him his daily prune juice. This squatter's lair lacks creepiness, and his bizarre sidekick is annoying and yet somehow more interesting than the Phantom. The pervert manager trying to bang Christine aggravated me and simultaneously made me want to vomit. Raoul is the only likeable character in the whole damn movie. The Joan of Arc opera scene makes up for some of the film, but it's still terrible.
Next on my meh list is the 1983 made for tv movie starring Micheal York and Jane Seymour. Now, this one has some likeable and applaudable scenes: the various murders and general creepiness of the Phantom, and the lair scene when she wakes up in his bed and the Phantom gets all up in her face is so intense and so Leroux I absolutely love it. The rest of the film is a jumbled hot mess at best, but Jane Seymour is 🔥 and she gets some damn good sex, so hell yeah to that!
And lastly, I do not like the Royal Albert Hall 25th anniversary recording. I should preface this by saying it is Sierra I don't like. I like Ramin, I love Hadley, everyone else is wonderful but I cannot stand Sierra. She tries too hard to make Christine a Disney Princess- and that doesn't fly with me. It comes off as insincere or mocking the source material at best, and at worst it makes Christine look like an airheaded ditz. Apparently Sierra played Ariel at one point which is hilarious because of all the Disney princesses, I dislike her the most. But that's a different rant for another day.
And finally, the one I hate most of all:
The 1998 Argento film. This is the worst Phantom adaptation I've ever seen. It is a whole lotta nope for me. Between the rats, the unecessary and pointless telepathy, the r*pe scene, and the unfunny weird vibe from the murder going on in this film it's a disaster from start to finish. Honestly, it's the rats and his hair that bother me from a visual standpoint alone and it's beyond disgusting the way this a$$🤡 treats Christine. I don't like any of the characters in here and for good reason. It's not worth watching and if you do, be ready to bleach your brain afterwards.
💖 Sorry if this was a long read! Thanks again for giving me an ask and I will cherish it forver!!!! 💖

Was having concepts for how to do Season Two in Obake Itoko and….
(for context, fic has teen!Obake as Hiro’s adoptive brother with a Lilo and Stitch vibe, shenanigans ensue)
Some of Megan’s classmates include Anne, Marci, Sasha, and Luz (and company)
They are collectively in Dungeons, Dungeons, & More Dungeons servers doing campaigns (for Amphibia and Owl House, respectively) with some crossover when the mood strikes
Luz described her familiar King as a cross between Zorua and Cubone and everyone fell in love with the concept
“Sprig” came over from the fanfiction servers they’re in, he hopped on the servers as soon as he was able (basically turned thirteen and went yaas forbidden internet I’m getting ALL the accounts) and loved the concept of doing campaigns online he’s totally playing a frog-person
Marci’s DM’ing the Amphibia campaign, pitched the plot and then pointed out that Anne, Sprig and Sasha needed to level up first
Sasha: okay so we get magically transported—what if we got separated? WHAT IF I WAS IN *JAIL*???
Marci: okay then I get to be in the library and you guys have to find each other and team up and come find me
It…went off the rails a little bit
Sprig turned his sister and grandpa into NPCs since he’s playing a native to the world, is only allowed on for an hour a day because grandpa has concerns about computers
(also has to be after dinner because school and he helps on the farm, they’re internet friends)
Grandpa starts sitting in on the campaign sessions
Gets into it
WAY into it
“Hop-Pop” went from an NPC to a character real quick
Added some domestic flair and conflict that Marci appreciates initially she was just tossing monsters at them
Hop-Pop is a theater old so he gets real dramatic
Bessie (his familiar) had a several-hours-long intro story that ended up having everyone sobbing
They all would unconditionally die for Bessie
Doesn’t understand the game part, is just here for the story, Sprig does the rolling for him
Marci: wait Hop-Pop WHY are you hiding the Calamity Box?
Hop-Pop: for the DRAMA
Sprig had Polly as an NPC but had to bump her up to warrior training at his sister’s insistence if he’s going to have a character based on her then dangit she needs to be AWESOME
Marci’s also on the fanfiction forums and vibes with Fred, ends up in the BH6 forums and drags Luz in because she’s a BIG fan
Luz stans one (1) skinny skeletal spooky superhero
Because AESTHETIC™
Hiro grouses a little because he was the one who designed the outfit
Buuut since Obake doesn’t like being dragged out to do superhero things she knows the pain of being in a starved fandom
Her second fav is Lizard Guy she’s done some one-shots of her campaign characters meeting him as an ACTUAL lizard-guy
Fred has faved and reviewed all of them
Luz keeps asking her DM Amity if they can add Lizard-Guy and/or Boneman as a one-off character and Amity keeps pointing out that they have NARRATIVE INTEGRITY TO THINK ABOUT, LUZ
Marci obliges during one of the crossover games, Amity agrees just to get Luz to chill
Luz is VERY happy
Amity: I figured you’d try to ship yourself with one of them during the campaign
Luz: we have NARRATIVE INTEGRITY TO THINK ABOUT, AMITY
This all means that when the school dance rolls around, and Megan invites Hiro, they all circle in for the good-natured ribbing
Anne: aw, he’s cute
Marci: does he have a brother?
Hiro, who still isn’t sure if Obake’s the brother or the cousin: *nervous coughing*
And then High Voltage shows up, Obake rocks in with BH6 because Hiro’s in trouble PRIORITIES—
Luz TOTALLY flips her lid, films the whole thing, runs up to ‘Boneman’ Obake and snaps a quick selfie with him
And with Lizard Guy who reads her fics oh gosh oh boy PUNCH ME WILLOW PUNCH ME IN THE FACE THIS IS THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE!
Amity: ask ME to punch you in the face, Luz
Gus: don’t you know she doesn’t hold back
Luz shares the pictures on the servers to find that Anne and Marci photobombed some of them
Luz: I don’t care this is still going to be my background pic
Granted I already have Amphibia existing as a TV show Hiro (and Obake) watches so I don’t know if this would work buuut it would give basis as to the campaign the girls (and farm-frogs) are playing
Plus all this is background for like a five-minute cameo but it was fun to brainstorm and is in line with my fanficcing history
Yes Kim Possible went to school with Yugi and Naruto and the Digidestined, your point?
IDK it pleases me
And what is fanfiction but to be fun and self-indulgent?
watch Season 3 have the girls want to do a Ducktales campaign and Obake ends up playing Manny

What I watched in...
Tumblr media
Oh wow, I watched a lot of horror in June, haha.
⭐ 1. The Others (2001). Shockingly, I hadn’t seen this before! Especially shocking because I really love the Turn of the Screw novella. This is p good - v moody and spooky with some lovely cinematography. Nicole Kidman is forever transcendent on screen.
Tumblr media
⭐ 2. The Wind Rises (2013). I’ve watched this many times, in no small part because my grandfather was a pilot in WWII and it makes me feel close to him, even if Japan and Australia were on opposite sides of the war. It helps that it’s a great film, beautifully made. I love it!
Tumblr media
3. The Perfection (2018). A wildly average rip-off of The Handmaiden that manages to water down the concept on every level. It’s...not great.
Tumblr media
4. The Hot Rock (1972). Fun little heist movie. Nothing to write home about except Robert Redford is v handsome.
Tumblr media
5. The Ritual (2017). Too many men.
Tumblr media
⭐ 6. Blackfish (2013). I’d seen this before, but it was good to rewatch it. A v affecting documentary on the mistreatment of whales at Seaworld.
Tumblr media
7. In the Tall Grass (2019). No thank you.
Tumblr media
8. The Little Stranger (2018). Ooof, I wanted to love this. Incredible cast and directed by Lenny Abrahamson, plus it’s gothic horror, which is my favourite kind, but alas. Super meandering, and the mystery at the centre just really isn’t that compelling.
Tumblr media
9. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2006). Speaking of incredible casts! This has one! Particularly Laura Linney, who’s a lowkey fave. This is a pretty good exorcism movie, and I think does what it sets out to do, but doesn’t offer anything particularly fresh to the genre.
Tumblr media
⭐ 10. The Invisible Man (2020). Such an interesting take on The Invisible Man character! Love that it positioned him as a villain and played around with how easily that power could be abused. Plus Elisabeth Moss plays woman on the edge so well. A really satisfying final act!
Tumblr media
11. The Host (2006). I’m not big on monster movies really, but this one is pretty fun. It really embraces not just the tropes of the genre, but also a wide range of fun characters. Still, not a fave.
Tumblr media
⭐ 12. The Half of It (2020). Oh, I was so charmed by this movie! It balances the platonic and romantic really well, and has such a tender approach to these sorts of formative relationships. It’s really, really lovely.
Tumblr media
January / February / March / April / May.
July soon. :-)

hey... what are some of your favorite horror movies? 👀 ('tis the season and also I wanna find more that aren't about demons or w/e)
Oh hey fam I gotchu 👏
My faveee is Alien (1979). It's a classic, purely suspenseful and claustrophobic. A powerful commentary on mega-corporation anxieties from the late 70's. SPECTACULAR acting. (I love Aliens (1986) as well but its not exactly "horror")
More of my faves, in no order:
Wait Until Dark (1963): Audrey Hepburn plays as a blind woman who is left alone while her husband is away on a business trip, and unbeknownst to her, she is in the middle of a drug smuggling operation. Not technically "horror" but the ending is SUPER chilling and gave me a new fear of accidently leaving my door unlocked. Y i k e s.
Night of The Living Dead (1990): Despite being a remake of the 60's version, I gotta say I enjoyed it just as much. Spooky, gory, and a lot of racial symbolism. A classic zombie flick!
Coraline (2009): Really popular but SO GOOD. Stop motion animation!! GENUINELY frightening scenes!! Impeccable aesthetic.
Annihilation (2018): ok so im on the fence about this one. As a movie *itself* its good, and VERY unnerving, but as a book adaption, awful. Aliens, body horror, confusing gore, and a horrifying bear. What more do you need? (If youre looking for a great horror book, this is the one you need to read)
The Village (2004): LISTEN I LOVE THIS ONE. A lot of people hated this movie simply bc of bad marketing. It is a subtle love story set behind an ominous presence that plagues an entire small community. Honestly, probably my second fave besides Alien. Its not super scary, and some may find it disappointing, but idk I find the movie beautiful.
A Quiet Place (2018): A simple alien invasion movie, but is INCREDIBLY tense. The cinematography is gorgeous, but the sound design made me jump more than once. I'll never look at corn silos the same way again.
Shaun of The Dead (2004): Pretty much one of the most hilarious movies Ive ever seen, and a surprisingly gory one at that. Clever humor, barely understandable British slang, and its pretty much the most 2020 relevant movie. Ever.
The Haunting (1963): I "liked" this movie as in "its not my thing but it was still pretty good" BUT there is some genuinely frightening parts of this movie. Does involve ghosts as such so idk if you'd wanna watch it bc supernatural elements, but yea. Worth a watch, classic ghost story film.
I have a few more but I didnt like them enough to out on the list. So yea!! Theres my guide to some really good spooky movies. Enjoy 🍂💀🍂

Since you are on a fic rec high and you have good taste -- any good AUs?
oof, that’s a really good inquiry bc there are so many different kinds of AUs here—are you looking for simple canon divergence, or are you looking for different-first-meeting AU, or perhaps a high school AU? Zombie AU? Again, different people consider “AUs” to be a variety of thing, so I tried to think of some good ones that I’ve read recently or that I’ve read repeatedly.
Tumblr media

reality is a sliding door
by @piratekane (7,929 words)
Summary: There is a theory: every person has a moment in their life where they make a choice to go left or right. From those possibilities, two parallel lines form, running alongside each other; two concurrent realities.
Parallel lines never cross; they run forever next to each other without ever meeting.
In one world, Beca Mitchell joins the Barden Bellas. In another world, she wasn’t supposed to.
In every world, Beca Mitchell underestimates Chloe Beale.
Additional notes: one of my all-time faves…such a classique AU concept and so well done.
This is Not a Kia Commercial (But It Sure Feels Like It)
by @emilyjunk (4,090 words)
Summary: Beca signs up as to be a test subject for an experiment so she can make some extra money. There is an accident and her consciousness is temporarily switched with a hamster. Now Chloe has to look after Becahamster for three days while the machine is prepared.
Additional notes: I have no words. Just read this.
Maybe In Another Life
by @not-so-average-fangirl (40,181 words, good for spooky szn)
Summary: Moving into a new house turns out to be a better experience for Chloe Beale than she thought it would. Perhaps it’s because of the friendly, little brunette she finds hiding in the basement one night. An unforeseen friendship sparks between them, but as more complicated emotions begin to arise, a shocking truth is revealed, and Chloe’s world gets turned upside down.
In My Blood
by @starlightscape (207,241 words, 13 chapters, incomplete, RP-style)
Summary: Bechloe // Zombie Apocalypse AU — In the summer of 2007, an outbreak of a mutated fungus ravaged the United States, transforming its human hosts into aggressive, sound-sensitive creatures known as clickers. Five years into the zombie apocalypse, Chloe Beale, a medic-in-training from the Barden settlement, has a chance run-in with nomadic weapons expert Beca Mitchell and her companions.
Additional notes: one of the most detailed zombie aus I’ve ever read, honestly.
Volutus
by Care (1,652 words, Rated M)
Summary: Around and around and around. An immortality/reincarnation AU.
the timing is right, the stars are aligned
by @chloebeale (6,589 words, immortality/reincarnation)
Summary: You’d think being immortal would be fun. The living forever part. That sounds fun. The everybody else dying in front of your eyes part? That’s not so fun.
love tastes like spring and blood
by @pan-de-queer (15,713 words, soulmate au—the one about the flowers)
Summary: The Bella captain was curled up against her co-captain, eyes on her dimmed phone instead of the television screen. Slim, tan fingers combed gently through her hair as Chloe’s focus stayed glued to the film and it felt much like any other movie night in the Bella house.
And then Emily yelled.“Hanahaki!”
Beca tensed at the word as Amy yawned a half-hearted, “Gesundheit, Legacy.”
Or: Beca’s dying and she’s not being dramatic, Chloe is confused, and lots of flower language is used.
Do Not Remove Cover
by @perpetuallyfive (23,564 words, 6 chapters + there are sequels, marvel AU)
Summary: A timeline of Beca Stark’s malfunctioning heart. Manufacturer’s warranty not guaranteed past ten years.
Additional notes: very Beca-centric, but a really good character study of Beca as Tony Stark’s kid.
The Bridge
by @suituuup and @starlightscape (55,847 words, RP style, different first meeting, unplanned pregnancy)
Summary: “In popular music, the bridge is a device used to break up the repetitive pattern of the song; it’s where words and music change.”
In the bustling borough of Brooklyn, Beca’s a struggling musician working as a waitress to make ends meet. At an open mic night, she meets Chloe–a successful local photographer–and sparks fly. As they grow close, Beca learns she left a one night stand the night before she met Chloe with much more than she bargained for…

RPDR Winners Ranked!
Disclaimer: the following list is MY opinion so don't come for me. Also, this won't be including All Stars winners, I'll do a separate list for that!
#11 - Tyra Sanchez, S2: Don't even get me fucking started on Tyra. I was 100% Team Raven and I'm still not over it.
Tumblr media
#10 - Bebe Zahara Benet, S1: Elephant in the room; season one just kind of sucked. Bebe did the best she could given the low budget and lackluster challenges and ultimately came out on top because of it. I personally liked Nina Flowers a little more but I’m not mad at Bebe’s win. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of her on AS3, even though her extreme confidence was rather amusing. I do love saying “Kamerooooon” though!
Tumblr media
#9 - Violet Chachki, S7: Another disclaimer: I don’t dislike anybody on this list below Tyra, they’re just victims of not being my favorites. Violet started off in episode one being not extremely likeable, but that changed over the course of the season and by the finale, I had basically accepted the fact that she was going to win. I was Team Ginger though and let’s be honest, it was between her and Violet because Pearl had no chance in hell of winning after “is there something on my face?” gate. I do appreciate Violet’s art and I love that she seems to be pretty close with some of her season 7 sisters. And no reveal, at least in my opinion, has ever come close to Violet’s fall runway. Just saying.
Tumblr media
#8 - Aquaria, S10: On first viewing, I didn’t NOT like Aquaria, but I didn’t love her either. I was actually rooting for Eureka to win because it’s high time a big queen places higher than runner up! Rewatching it though, I do see why Ru gave her the crown; her runways were perfect and for such a young queen, she was so fucking polished. I was Team Miz Cracker in that iconic “twin” rivalry, but again, I don’t hate Aquaria, she just isn’t one of my top faves. I do respect her and her drag and I’m sure with age, she is just going to get that much better (if that’s even possible)!
Tumblr media
#7 - Raja, S3: It almost breaks my heart not to have Raja higher on this list but it's no fault of her own, some of her fellow winners are just that great. Despite being a part of the Heathers clique, I found Raja to be not at all like her shady ass friends. She was the classiest of the bunch (though I do love Manila too) and she metaphorically pissed on that fucking runway every episode. I always found her very attractive out of drag, so that was an added bonus. I was extremely happy when she won! TOOT!
Tumblr media
#6 - Sasha Velour, S9: I just went to Sasha’s “Smoke and Mirrors” show in the fall and it reignited my love for this bald queen. I adored her on season 9 and even though most people were expecting Shea to win, I wasn’t mad when she won instead. Her lip syncing at the finale was EPIC and I do believe she beat Shea fair and square. I kind of hoped they would’ve retired the lip sync battle after this season though because I don’t believe it’s a fair way to determine the winner but hey, when has Ru ever listened to what the fans want, amirite? Regardless, I love Sasha and I can never look at rose petals the same way again.
Tumblr media
#5 - Yvie Oddly, S11: The hate that Yvie got on her season, particularly from Silky, made me so fucking angry. She came from an honest, but caring place whenever she gave her fellow queens critiques and those bitches just couldn’t handle it (sorry Vanjie, ily). My initial reaction to her winning was slight disappointment, just because as a Canadian, I really wanted Brooke to win, but upon further reflection, I think Yvie deserved it more. She went through a lot of shit in her life and throughout filming and to see her snag the crown after so many people doubted her was so amazing. Also, I’ve met her IRL and she’s is so sweet and a fucking fierce performer. You do you Yvie.
Tumblr media
#4 - Sharon Needles, S4: Here we have another underdog. Although Sharon’s fight with Phi Phi O’Hara on the show was iconic (”Tired ass show girl!” “At least I am a showgirl, bitch! Go back to Party City where you belong!”), she did not deserve to be put in just a “spooky” box. Sharon is versatile as fuck, and her changing aesthetic over the years is proof of that. And again, she’s a hot boy so she gets bonus points for that. Love you Sharon!
Tumblr media
#3 - Bob the Drag Queen, S8: This season was the first I ever watched so it will always been one of my faves. As much as I loved Naomi Smalls and Kim Chi, I knew Bob was going to win it because she’s just so fucking funny. Yes, her looks weren’t always the most polished, but I adored her anyway and I love her even more outside of the show. In case you didn’t know, she’s actually good friends with Trixie and she even took over Katya’s spot on the “Trixie and Katya Show” on Viceland when Katya went to rehab. We stan a queen who’s there for her friends!
Tumblr media
#2 - Jinkx Monsoon, S5: As mentioned in previous lists, I have since forgiven Roxxxy Andrews for picking on my little baby Jinkx, but it still made my heart so happy when Jinkx beat her to the crown. This narcoleptic ginger was adorable then and even more adorable now; I swear her laugh could cure cancer. And if you haven’t watched “Cool Mom” on WOW Presents’ YouTube channel yet, you’re missing out! Jinkx, if you’re reading this, will you be my mom?
