Self-care & connecting with nature deities during the wintertime

Is it still possible to connect with harvest and nature deities such as Freyr during the cold season?

Long answer short, yes. Obviously, absolutely. But you all saw that answer coming, right? So I’m here to give you some ideas, as the person who’s favorite season is winter and who made it their mission to help everybody like winter just a little more. And since I feel especially close to Yngvi-Freyr when it comes to the Gods, I will use him as an example throughout this post, though a lot of the following could apply to most nature deities.

Let us first examine a common misconception before we get to the bottom of this topic: the fields don’t die when the sun sets on the 31st of October. The earth still lives under thick layers of snow. The process of dormancy is absolutely crucial to the cycles of nature. And if, like me, you find Freyr to be a sort of guardian of these cycles, then you’ll know he manifests himself in so many ways, even where you might not think to look.

Have you heard about the holly and ivy tradition? It was common during the European Medieval times to decorate houses and halls using holly and ivy, because they were the two plants with leaves that stayed green, even in the dark and cold of winter. This type of practice is often referred to as "bringing the outside in", and it's something I'm quite fond of. I've no doubt it could be a great help if you're the type to feel depressed during the winter time. It's a way to remind oneself of how everpresent nature actually is. Lots of greenery remains despite the snow! And to ackowledge this fact and to work with it is such a great way to connect with nature Gods in general! It goes to show that you appreciate their blessings all year round, not just during spring and summer. While it's true that in many cases, the presence of deities such as Freyr may feel somehow "dimmed" during the winter time, I assure you, they don't disappear once the first snow falls! On the contrary, they are every bit as present and active as when spring comes! They simply manifest themselves in a different manner.

When winter comes, I love to work with evergreen spirits. I incorporate spruce, fir and cedar into my practice and in my offerings. I won't go into too much detail for this topic however, because I've written posts that pertained to it in the past (namely, this post on tree work and this one on land spirits). Since I don't have easy access to holly or ivy, I make due with evergreen! Not with any actual branches, except when I'm lucky enough to find some that were torn away by the wind. But rather, using representations of it. In the same manner, and in the spirit of "bringing the outside in", it's also possible to decorate using representations of the sun! Harvest deities such as Freyr are often associated with it due to its crucial role in the cycles of plant growth. Candles also make for great solar symbols, and to place them around the home is like lighting a handful of little suns to bring much needed light and warmth inside. What's more, lighting candles on the winter solstice night is a widespread practice among pagans today! It serves to symbolize the return of the sun, as the days start to grow longer again. Until then however, it can be soothing for one to light a candle every morning before school or work, and to call upon any harvest, nature or solar deity of their choice to ask for strength and motivation throught the day. Even when it's difficult for us to feel their presence, they always hear us.

Now, how to actually feel more connected to nature? Oftentimes, connecting with nature and connecting with Yngvi-Freyr are one and the same. And on a more personal note, a lot of the advice I received from him pertained exactly to that: I believe he's often urged me to go spend more time in nature when I am going through rough patches. I know the cold and the cloudy weather can make it depressing for a lot of people to go out. My advice on this is to take it step by step: no need to go on long, four-hour long hikes right away! After all, there is already much beauty to be seen close to home. And I can't put enough emphasis on that: dress warmly! Also, as a tool for motivation, prepare a treat for yourself to enjoy after you've gone out. Part of what makes me enjoy winter so much is the thought of the warmth and light which await inside after I’ve gone out into the cold. The home is as sacred as the outside world! So why not buy, or prepare a batch of cookies, a cup of hot chocolate or a spicy dinner! It's something I love to do as a way to motivate myself to go out more often. And I like to offer part of these to local land spirits and to the Vanir, to show my appreciation for the beauty of this season. Just as an aside, I find snow water to be a great such offering as well!

I know that I’m not revolutionizing the pagan scene with this post, as there’s only so many ways to connect with nature during winter. I think it’s important to keep in mind that the snow, rain and cold that this season brings is just as much part of nature as the greens and lively colors of spring and summer. For this reason, they are just as much a part of nature deities and what they represent. Deities have so many facets and depth, and it can be so fulfilling to explore these different aspects, and the way we perceive them. While it’s true that spiritually speaking, it often feels to us heathens as if Skaði is somehow “taking” Freyr’s place in the order of things for the time being— much like the Holly King takes the Oak King’s place in Celtic folklore. This doesn’t make it so he disappears! In my experience, he presides over the cycle of seasons as a whole, and he is every bit as present for his followers as he is during the winter. I can connect with Skaði during the summer in a similar manner. And I’m sure that the same can be said for so many other harvest deities.

As time goes on, though, the station amasses a small audience as new hosts and guests are introduced, and the listeners start to uncover the mystery of this odd late-night broadcast.

At a similar time, a singular New Yorker finally decides to ask if anyone else has ever seen a massive ninja turtle on the rooftop of their apartment building. Well, not giant like.. Godzilla–sized, just the size of a human? A short one even. But definitely too big for a normal turtle.

Through a series of transcripts and facebook comments, we watch as two different groups separately come closer and closer to revealing that a family of mutant ninjas lives in their sewers.

Healing from you

Time heals all wounds and that includes broken hearts.

After the death of your boyfriend caused by the events of the upside down you were certain that you’d never heal from the ache that sat heavy in your heart. The flashes of him that flit though your dreams every night keep you tethered to the past, yet you find yourself clinging to the soothing comfort of familiarity you receive in the memory of his arms.

Your friends are worried about how closed off you’ve become and Steve tasks himself with looking after you and bringing out the person you used to be, and if that takes late night drives, silent solidarity and you painting his nails while you reminisce about the past, well that’s something he’s happy to do.

The memories that play themselves along the insides of your eyelids every night have become less of a crutch with the time, support and loving life you’ve settled into with your brilliant Fiancé Steve. You’d had many dreams of him telling you he’d find a way home, to just wait for him and have faith that he’d make his way back to you. Those were only dreams though, right? Yet, even now having been up for hours, you can feel the lingering warmth of his hand on the back of your head and the way it had pressed you against his chest while he whispered that he loved you in a hoarse voice.

“Just wait.” Maybe the whole Upside down thing had gotten to you more than you’d thought because you found yourself watching the door and believing he’d walk through it, and you’d be there waiting just as he’d asked.

Or After years of healing you’ve finally settled down and had a happy life filled with love in a home you’d just bought with your Fiancé Steve, it was the fairy tale ending you’d always wanted. But if the man you’d lost long ago suddenly comes back into the picture, will you keep the idealistic life you’ve built or will you throw it all away for the only person who’d occupied your mind for nearly a decade.

So I guess this could be Steve Harrington x Reader with the dead boyfriend being Eddie Munson or Billy Hargrove.

I’ve been delaying working on/about one of my original ideas, because it’s beginning to veer too close to being The Marvelous Mrs Maisel: Part Two unintentionally.

I had an idea, long before the show was even thought up, about a young woman in the sixties, from a similar background to my great-grandmother (manners matter, women wore dresses and skirts only and were expected to marry, have children and be the dotting housewife), who completely rebels basically, against what was expected of her. This all stemming from a low point in her life, where some particular somethings causes her life to go from bad to worse, leading her to make a dramatic change in her life.

The dramatic change, I kept fluctuating between the character becoming a singer or an actress, maybe a musician for example but I just was never happy. Then one day, I could suddenly see her turning to comedy, in vein with the likes of British/Irish future female comedians/comic writers, like Victoria Wood, Aisling Bea or Catherine Tate to name a few or contemporary males comedians, who were getting to become successful at the time, like The Two Ronnies, before they were even that (Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett), to give an example.

In her new career choice, she befriends a fellow comedian, someone who knows the ins and outs of the world, who becomes somewhat of a mentor and friend to them. There’s also a bit of a flirtation/easy banter between them and their conversations but nothing really happens until, one day it does.

There is more to the story than this but just this section of my idea, I just think that it sounds too Midge/Lenny-coded, at least more than I had realised. The show did and has influenced how visually I saw the characters but I had this idea back in 2008/2009, so a while before the show aired.

I enjoy writing but I just don’t want anyone, if they ever read what I’ve written (and knows of TMMM), to ever think I’m copying the Palladino’s because I’m not.

Sorry for this ramble of mine, just my thoughts and self-doubt getting in the way again!

Also, my story is predominantly set in London, not New York.

Amber Nic Kazansky - The Admiral’s Daughter

One of the top pilots to end up being shipped out to the program. Probably got in because of her last name and family. Let’s be real, her father is an amazing pilot and Admiral, so people know or heard of her background.

If you wonder about her Callsign -> it’s because Amber can stay silently fuming, turning not piercing ice cold but like a heated hit that would keep you solo in the skies without any air to breathe if you push it.

Flirty, sweet, closed off however she’s fun on occasion. She is most likely at the bar to pick up chicks and hotties while also sing her heart out. That results in her meeting Lieutenants Rooster and Phoenix while in flight school.

They became friends easily with Phoenix and she already knew Rooster, just haven’t seen him in the longest time! So besties reunited.

She gets interested and intimidated easily by Hangman. She definitely finding him cocky and annoying at first but soon she like him once she gets to know him. However she won’t tell him that until later, trying to play hard to get with Jake. Lead him on and see if he really likes her. Will they ever actually go on a date? Who knows?!

Her uncle and godfather is none other than Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. So you can just imagine the fun those two had annoying Ice.

They used to have wayyy too much fun and Maverick used to sneak her into his hanger to learn more about planes. Even fly in one once she got older and made Ice think that he was the one to first take his baby girl flying. Oops he found out later ofc.

Jenny Penelope “JenPen” Mitchell - First Year Lieutenant

She doesn’t always follow the rules but also knows she might have a legacy to live up to due to her family history. Her father is freaking MAVERICK MITCHELL, you just know this girl is in for the ride.

Wonder how she got her Callsign -> It was a nickname her childhood best friend Rooster came up with her. JenPen! Taking her names Jennifer and Penelope together, it just stuck.

One night she heads to her old man’s favorite bar which is where she meets the gang as she questioned her environment. Her wingwoman Clara told her “You wanna know who’s the best? Look over there.” She turns around to see a charming smile being Rooster as she smirks. “I can definitely see it. Handsome too.” She replies.

Even though she already knows who Rooster is because they are best friends and dated in their early years of college. BUT she won’t let her woman know that, so she plays it off cool. She eventually meets the gang, roughly reunited with Rooster (Hangman thinks they are a couple of crazy kids)

Automatically becoming friends with Bob, Fanboy, Payback, Coyote and Hangman. Phoenix however took a few sips of beer and jokes to lighten her up. Needless to say, he became gal pals with her soon enough. So much so that they have a Girl’s Night every Friday night with her wingman ofc.

After the mission that caused tears to be shared. Everyone stayed to become instructors and or work on their skill set, get higher in the ranks. Once her father came into town permanently, hugs and kisses were shared to between the two!

Maverick has always been proud and loving towards his kid. Always trying to be the best father he can be and show her the ropes. He rubbed off on his daughter a little too much at time.

She can be a lot like her father at times! For examples! JenPen has always run off to have fun with Amber Nic to the bar scene and beach, dragging herself up into the air for a quick fly by, flirty and a little cocky.

Audrey “Sunset” Davidson - Pretty Mama Bear

Just like her CALLSIGN, she can be a bright, joyful and happy go lucky as the sun. But she got a bit of bitchy temper and will burn you a bit, if you step too far or on the wrong foot.

Audrey is a pilot, future reference reporter and a dips her hand in an engineering programs for planes later on. Thanks to Maverick’s love for planes and showing her the ropes!

She’s gorgeous, smart and will stop you in your tracks if she sees something isn’t right. Her mama bear side tends to come out A LOT in Top Gun. But all the guys love it and simply find it sweet.

She befriends Goose and Maverick in the early years, going to Top Gun together. Audrey sees them as her boys and they nickname her mama bear as for fun. Her and Mav even dated a while!

She’s is also best friends with Carole and aunt to Baby Goose aka Bradley Bradshaw.

Sooo many nights of partying and singing happily “Great Balls Of Fire” with this family. I’ll tell you that!

At Top Gun, she meets the rest of the gang! Such as Sundown, Chipper, Slider and of course Iceman himself. Who she loves to teases from the very beginning and he doesn’t hesitate to do the same. She nicknames him many kinds of things since day one. Such as, “Pretty Boy”, “Frosted tips” and “Hound dog”

Until one day after Iceman hearing Maverick calling out to her “Hey, Mama wanna hit the bar or beach after class? ” and Goose saying to her loudly “Sweetheart your being a mama bear again.” Iceman came up with his own classic nickname for Audrey , “Pretty Mama.”

They became friends very quickly afterwards lol. After Goose’s tragic accidental death (It wasn’t Maverick’s fault! It was the plane malfunctioning wrong and such) the whole gang grief in their own way. Audrey and Mav spend a lot of more time closer together. But if she wasn’t with him because Maverick was with Charlie, Ice would try to spend time with her, let them hear out their thoughts and pour out any emotions.

You know the rest! Graduation, the mission, celebration and etc. Years later everyone is still friends, best friends ofc. Becoming one big happy family in their own weird way, having Sunday bunches and family dinners if possible.

It’s absolutely amazing to me that Jason walked away from his Hush and UTRH encounter with Batman without coming away with the belief that Bruce absolutely hated him. Like Batman never once reacted to the thought of Jason being alive even though he had evidence to prove it. Just think about how that could have made Jason feel.

This is on top of Batman believing that Jason’s mother gave him love before he died instead of the absolute betrayal it actually was, on top of Batman and Co blaming Jason for his own death and calling him the failed Robin. The entire relationship between Bruce and Jason post-resurrection has been about misunderstanding who Jason is and what happened to him that lead to his resurrection and his transformation into the Red Hood.

Fundamentally, Bruce has no idea who Jason is after UTRH and Jason has no intention of explaining himself. This is mixed up with the tragedy of Batman supposedly knowing everything and never asking for explanations. Bruce assumes Batman is correct. Jason knows this. Ergo, the cycle of misunderstanding continues and Jason gets the short end of the stick. Jason knows this. That cycle has to lead somewhere.

Jason is basically telling Batman “This is who I am now. Accept it.” and Batman does accept it. The problem is he’s accepting the image of Jason in his mind, the failure who died loved by his mom who became a killer, not the kid betrayed by everyone and everything he knew, the justice system which fails to keep criminals behind bars, the mother who backstabbed him and yet he still tried to save--even Batman, or the emotionless bastard pretending to be him in Hush and UTRH.

But, in canon, it’s infuriating that the narrative continues to paint this idea that Batman still loves Jason. How can you love someone you will never understand?

I think the idea that “Bruce loves Jason” needs to die. Bruce loves a memory, nothing more. And the tragedy is that Jason still loves Batman, loves him more deeply than Batman loves him, because Jason accepts and understands all of Batman’s flaws as well--something Batman will never be able to return in kind. Because how can you love someone when you’re not willing to accept their flaws?

I literally felt Steven saying this to Marc, trying to be his safe space as always. Trying to help him to be that innocent & calm person with no worries he always wished to be.
