Fandom New Years Resolutions for 2023

I don’t want to do any of the Year In Review things because...well, it was a really intense, difficult year and I didn’t get as much done as I would have liked. However! I thought it might be fun to lay out my plans for 2023, keep them reasonable (keep them safe) and try to hype myself up to finish.

Season's Greedings, 2023!

Every year I try to post my Greed List (What I want for Christmas" which includes the even more vital "Do Not Want" list.

Do Want:

1. A functional dishwasher.

We have one, we've had it serviced several times, and I don't think it's ever going to properly wash dishes again. It needs to go away, a new one needs to be installed, and I have terrible decision fatigue about figuring out which one I want. I want it to wash dishes. I don't even fully understand the choices I'm faced with.

You can contribute in one of the following ways: cash or electronic transfer donations to the dishwashing fund, solid recommendations for a specific make and model, or bad "features" I should avoid.

2. Laundry on-site: I own a washer and a dryer. The washer is down in the basement, but has nowhere legit to drain. The dryer is still at my neighbors' house, in the garage.

You can either be part of the team to bring the dryer home and set it up, or throw some cash at the plumbing problem, or offer assistance to solve the plumbing problem.

Those are the Big Things. Here's the little stuff:

A handcrafted card. I'm a sucker for those, and it will be kept, treasured, and probably displayed every year for a long time.

BJD shoes. All my dolls have lost shoes due to the vinyl or adhesives disintegrating. I need all kinds of shoes, particularly in 1/4 and 1/6 scale.

Shoes for me. I need a good solid supportive pair of shoes to wear to work.

Feed my dish collections: black octagonal glass pieces are always welcome. (They say "France" on the bottom.) Also Steubenville Woodfield pieces, particularly the dinner plates which seem hard to find. All colors welcome.

DVDs: we can't stream, so I need hard copies of anything I want to see. I'd particularly like Marvel stuff (especially recent movies, I'm way behind), Leverage Redemption, anime, or something unusual that you love and aren't sure if I've seen it yet. Ditto for CDs.

Funny collectables: I still love gnomes, mushrooms, fairy aesthetic items, the Nightmare Before Xmas, Tea Party items, etc.

Cat toys. My cats like them and I love to play with my cats.

I do like shiny jewelry, but I appreciate handcrafted items the most.

Hand crafted items. Support an artisan and it's like getting two gifts in one.

I still love to get Lush gift cards. One year I got several and it was The Best Xmas Ever.

Toilet Paper. I am always delighted to receive disposable paper products like TP, paper towels, paper plates, etc.

Food: teas are always welcome. Heck, just bring me a bubble tea and I'll be thrilled! Candy is super tricky; I'd rather get a card and warm wishes than candy. Baked goods are welcome early in the season, but I really don't want a bunch of sweets in the house the week before I give up sugar altogether. (Jan 1) There are very few places I can go to eat, but I'd love gift cards for Thai Nivas, any sushi place, Panera, Cafe Mochi, or Pearl.

Food that you canned yourself. Jam, jelly, apple butter, even regular pickles (because my partner likes them) or, if you want to see me happy-cry, pickles with no garlic or onion in the mix.

Experiences: indoor things are fraught. However, if you want to give me a gift card for The London Tea Room (or better yet, offer to take me for tea) I would love it. Outdoor concerts or performances might be ok, but talk to me about it first.

Do not want:

I have a lot of post Covid issues, as well as my pre Covid IBS problems. Add in my Big Sugar Fast from Jan 1st to late March, and suddenly certain holiday standards don't work for me.

No MSG. This means soup bases, seasoning packets, salad dressings, flavored snack chips, etc. It also means no Alfredo or tomato sauces, and no mushrooms.

No garlic, onion, chocolate, coffee, or peanut. None. Zero. I can't have it in the house. Cross-contamination is a problem. If one molecule gets in the food I can't eat it. These were all things I loved to eat before Covid; now they are completely and totally ruined for me.

Try not to make me part of your Christmas cookie baking. May I suggest instead that you bake some salt dough "cookie" ornaments, and paint one to give me for my tree? Cookies and sweets are cruel unless you give them to me very early in the season.

I finish my drink and order another before pulling out my phone. I start to call Jack, but I can already hear his judgmental tone in my head, and it’s too much. I text him instead.

Hey Captain. I’ve thought about the case, and I think you should give it to someone else. Sorry.

I type and erase the last word several times before erasing it one last time and sending the message. I wait, but by the time I’ve finished my second drink I still haven’t gotten a response. I stop my waitress and order another.

It’s going to be a long night.

Seven Sentence Sunday

I was tagged by @toboldlywrite (thanks bud!) to do this so here we go. Basically the game is to post the last seven sentences you wrote. I am technically gonna give a whole ten but that's because it's all one paragraph and if you cut the first three sentences of the paragraph out it doesn't make any sense lmao

Anyway, here it is:

There was something alive about a house. Something hot and squishy and raw. It had organs, a nervous system, blood. Perhaps not in the same sense as a person. But a house had a life of its own that continued after its owners died or moved away. That is why empty houses always feel full of ghosts- its living is louder in the absence of others. That is also why a house always feels warmer when it is loved. Loneliness petrifies its soul. A house does not want to be empty; a house wants to love and be loved. In that way, a house is just like a person.

AHHH I also love Silna! I was lowkey scared you didnt like her as I havent seen content about her. But I dont see a lot of her in general, idk, I miss her... Also, you pretty much said all I think about her (I also was terrified about what they were going to do with her and oh so relieved it didnt go that way) and explained it so brilliantly?? I'm gonna answer all of your three questions here, so: you're right I don't have much Silna content in my blog! I'm not even sure I have a tag for her,, I want to look for more stuff and also create something myself- starting from finishing that little sketch of her I posted a few days ago!

The "MEEEEENNNN!!!" is the true gem of the show let's be honest. Also we stan a JFJ declaring his passions like that. Glad I've made you laugh!♥️

And yes Niva is so pretty!! And very talented too at least from what I've seen in The Terror!

Landscape: Yes, I totally get you, I did exactly the same thing: watching the show the first time like A Normal Person, focusing on the plot and yes, admiring the cinematography, in awe of this beautiful thing I was watching, but that was it. then from the second/third rewatch on, it was me stopping the episode every time i noticed something interesting, something that I didn't noticed the previous time, or to take a million screencaps. As you said it's so good, ALL so good and pleasing to watch.

Something that really struck me even the first time was the immense difference between part 1 and 2 of the show, like...they really make you *understand* that everything has changed between the two parts. The [ you know what I'm gonna say now ] men leave the ships, and it's a huge change for all of them, and the authors make you *feel it* as well: the lanscapes change, the camera angle becomes wider and wider, taking in the big, wide, terryfying spaces. The colors change, from the dark and deep browns and blue of the ships, to the grey-white of the tundra and the ice. The light changes of course, from dark to light, but TOO light, too blinding, it's not the healthy sunshine, it's the neverending daylight that can make one mad. Ughhh I just love the way they made them completely opposite, visually speaking. It's one of my favourite aspects of the entire show and everytime i rewatch it i am speechless. Masterfully done 👌

As for your favourite shot, good one!! Very powerful, in the complete whiteness of what seemed to be the entire world, in that moment. This reminds me of that other shot in ep 2 (if I'm not mistaken) with the ships stuck in the ice and the camera going from their level to up, up, up to show that all around them there where only: ice.

Also don't worry about your English, mine is not perfect either! We try, that's the most important thing :)

1) When did you decide that you wanted to start writing?

When I was so young that I don’t really remember, tbh. But it was more of that I was (and still am) an idea hoarder, and the outlet for that is to write stuff down, I guess.

2) How many WIPs do you have and what genre are they?

currently working on Starlight only atm (trying to keep myself sane.) It’s high fantasy YA.

but I have seriously so many I had to put them in their own post

3) What’s a topic you’d never write on?

anything that’s not really my story to tell, first of all. And I don’t write any sort of smut/erotica.

and on a lesser note, I don’t really vibe with things that are sapient at a human level, but aren't at all human. So you probably won’t catch me writing super advanced AI or humanlike aliens or humanlike animals. Even in my high fantasy, I don’t really have other races akin to elves or dwarves. Not to say that that kind of thing is bad at all, or even will turn me off a story. But some of that kind of thing is really popular right now, and It’s just not for me as much. Don’t really know why.

4) Which character would you never kill, under any circumstances?

I wouldn’t kill characters that belong to stories where a death would be out of place, first of all. And I actual really hate killing off characters that are centra to the narrative regardless. But a lot of my stories involve situations where it would be unrealistic for everyone to survive, so dang, man. I guess I shouldn’t keep all of them alive. But the short answer is I really don’t like killing anyone.

5) What authors did you dislike at first but then grew to appreciate later?

I can’t really think of anyone that fits...except maybe Suzanne Collins, because I was really weirded out by the hunger games fandom before I read the books (I still am, tbh). But then I actually did read the books and they weren’t bad at all and I quite appreciate them now.

6) Have you ever gotten readers block?

yeah only for most of the past few years :/

7) Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t experience emotions strongly?

um yeah I’m living proof (I do experience emotions, but they’re not usually very intense and they’re hard to identify and I’m bad at expressing them)

8) Does writing energize you or exhaust you?

completely depends. on what? no idea.

9) How many unfinished WIPs do you have?

ideas: 16, maybe.?

things I’ve actually written a notable amount of: 6 ish?

but also, Starlight is supposed to be three books, and Glory is supposed to be four, so that would be even more if you count that.

10) What was an early experience where you learned that language has power?

Writing Meme!

I’d like to thank @heka-writes for tagging me. This’ll be fun!

1) Favorite plot twists?

I usually don’t like plot twists as they often feel forced, but the reveal that Peter Pettigrew was the one who ratted out Harry’s parents, not Sirius Black, was nicely executed.

2) Have you noticed any patterns in your OTPs (one true pairings)? If so, what are they?

Nope.

3) Do you like to write 1st, 2nd or 3rd person?

I like to write in 3rd person the most, but I occasionally write in 1st person when it suits the story exceptionally well.

4) Favorite character of all time?

Gaara from Naruto. I’ve been obsessed with him for 12 years now, and I highly doubt that will ever change. The full explanation for why that is would be too lengthy and personal to post, so let’s just say he helped me get through the worst time of my life.

5) How many projects do you have?

A half a dozen books (mostly picture book manuscripts) and at least as many short stories as of right now.

6) Favorite writing YouTuber?

Terrible Writing Advice

7) How do you overcome writer’s block?

I either force myself to write something or try to relax for a little while. That usually helps.

8) Are you like me and have a hard time writing and not getting distracted from the internet?

No. I do use the internet to factcheck a lot of stuff while I write, but I don’t consider that getting distracted.

9) Strategies for overcoming number 8? Lol

Turn off your WiFi or try writing by hand.

10) Least favorite book or TV show?

A lot of the books and shows I hate tend to blend together in my mind because they all feel so bland and unoriginal. I hate books that don’t think through their implications or have their characters act phenomenally stupid, and I have TV shows that completely rely on sex, drugs, and/or alcohol for their humor (those are basically bodily humor jokes for adults as far as I’m concerned). I suppose if I had to pick one least favorite book or TV show I’d go with City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. It’s been years since I read it, but even in high school I thought it was horribly written in terms of plot (predictable), romance (abusive behavior was made to look romantic and the ‘incest’ implications were disgusting even though that twist was obviously a load of baloney), and general writing quality (even I thought Clare went overboard with the similes and I use way too many of those myself!).

I turn to the left on the intersection of Figueroa street and Soto street; when I reach down to grab my phone that fell on the floor earlier today. I feel something on my finger, when I bring my hand up I'm holding a piece of hair. I scrunch my eyebrows confused, placing both my hands back on the wheel as I am keeping straight. The radio playing softly in the background. I quickly glance at Melanie, “Next time don't try and get all your hair in my car when you brush it Melanie"

Melanie chuckles and places her bare feet on the dashboard. "You don't own me"

I've told this girl a thousand times to not put her feet on my dashboard but does she listen?

No.

I shake my head as I approach a stoplight, gently pressing the brake pedal, I start to smack Melanie's feet off of the dashboard. We did this for about 2 minutes, me attempting to smack her legs and Melanie moving her feet before I hit her. She finally places her feet on the carpet, both of us laughing. I see the light turn green, then I see Melanie's body language shift it was like she was in a trance, her eyes glued to the radio. Nothing but the sound of Labrinth singing Jealous. Bringing her hand up to the radio volume knob, turning up the music.

But I always thought you'd come back, tell me all you found was heartbreak and misery

It's hard for me to say, I'm jealous of the way

When we finally get to the bar it was 10:00 p.m. We see some people just hanging around outside, when we walk in it's moderately packed. Some people at the bar and some people sitting down just a casual crowd.

They just added in the new Karaoke lounge it was sitting smack dab in the front, I look up and see that there are two seats open right on the edge of the bar. I quickly grab Melanie's hand speed walking over to the two seats.

"Can I get a Vodka Tonic" I say to the bartender.

He turns his attention to Melanie, she takes a seat next to me smoothing out her dress. "I'll have the same"

While waiting we turn around and see that they turned on the karaoke machine, we both decide to listen in. A man goes up looks to be mid 50's caucasian and the way he's dressed you can definitely tell he's a tourist, we can hear his wife screaming his name while clapping.

As he starts to sing Livin' On a Prayer. Melanie and I can't control our laughter. Melanie turns to me, we give each other a look and start laughing again, in between laughing I hear Melanie. "Oh my gosh that guy sounds like my mom when she's singing in the shower"

I'm trying to control myself to not be too loud, that's when I look behind Melanie and see Piper.

Just when we were having a good night.

"Melanie" Piper says as she sits beside my best friend.

Melanie's smile turns into a frown when she turns her chair over to see Piper staring at her. "Piper"

Piper leans her body back, waving over to me. "Hey Leyla"

I nod smiling muttering a quiet hello

I could see Melanie's leg shaking minutes go by, finally our drinks arrive. As I'm about to bring the drink up to my lips, I hear Melanie. "Where's the security footage?"

I almost spit out my drink when I hear her say that, Piper looks just as shocked as me but more so she looks thrown off by the question.

"What are you-"

Melanie waves her off, smacking her lips. "Don't give me that bullshit excuse, Leyla and Grey talked to that security officer....he told them about you Piper and your services"

I see Piper clamping down on her clutch, gripping it so tight that her already pale knuckles are turning white. She takes a breath in and lets it out quickly. "So what do you want to know?"

"Why did erase the security footage...the night that Joslyn died?"

"I had my reasons" Piper answers simple. She grins. "You really think that security officer would tell the cops that it was me? He's not going to risk losing his job. You can't prove anything and It's not illegal"

"It is if it has to do with your best friend's death!" Melanie shouts, causing the whole bar to look over at us. I hear a bunch of whispering.

They need to stop arguing now. I already felt bad about Grey almost killing that security officer yesterday and now this.

I can sense a lot of hostility in the room with Melanie and Piper, I decided to interject myself into the conversation.

"You wanna do karaoke?" I ask.

"What?" they both say in unison.

I stand up from my seat and put my drink on the coaster, before I repeat."Do. You. Want. To. Do. Karaoke"

Piper pauses, looking back and forth at me and Melanie, she glances at Melanie once again. "Is she serious?"

I see Melanie jump down from the bar stool and sigh. "Sadly...she is".

I turn around and walk over to Piper, I grab her hand and pull her up from the stool. I walk back over to Melanie and take a hold of her hand as well, leading us over to the crowd of people waiting for their turn to get up on the tiny stage.

"C'mon lets just forget about the arguing, the fighting, and the secrets and lets just have a good time...take our minds off of everything for just one night."

After at least 2 hours of Leyla, Piper and even Melanie singing they shut the bar down, as the bar owner closes up shop all three girls stand outside. Piper is waiting for her driver at the sidewalk. Leyla went to go bring the car around when she was at the turn to make a left towards Melanie and Piper.

Leyla sees Melanie leaning closer to Piper, whispering something in her ear. Pipers nods her head as If agreeing to something Melanie says. Piper lifts her head up towards Leyla as she pulls up and starts smiling. Leyla brings the window down and shouts at Melanie "C’mon girl get your butt in this car before I leave you"

"I'm coming". Melanie starts to walk toward the passenger side door but before she opens the door she looks at Piper.

"Goodnight"

After an evening of laughter and singing it's time for Leyla to head to bed. Already gotten her shower and brushed her teeth she climbs into bed, getting under her covers. She grabs her tablet that is sitting on the nightstand charging, unplugging it from the charger cable and presses in her passcode.

Leyla usually listens to ASMR to help her go to sleep, she clicks on YouTube but something stops her...she remembers the song Melanie was listening to in the car. She looks up the song lyrics, finding the song she clicks on it scrolling down and reading the comments she sees someone wrote in the comments below the video: Jaelynn's favorite song #Neverforget

Leyla's fingers click out of youtube and go on safari she goes to the search engine and types in the name Jaelynn Davis. Leyla is Shook, she sees posts, online articles, a bunch of stuff dealing with Jaelynn. clicking the third link down from the page she gasps when reading it.

JAELYNN DAVIS FOUND DEAD IN HER OWN HOME.

Published: February 2nd 2014

Jaelynn Davis a 15 year old teenage girl was found dead in her home by her mother. It was after a school dance and her mother kissed her cheek goodnight, not knowing it would be the last time she would see her daughter. The family is heartbroken at the loss of their youngest member, her sister Melanie said a few words at the memorial they had out for Jaelynn at the school. "She was clever and bright, she loved reading and doing her work. These bullies....teased her relentlessly, just because she was a bit different. These disgusting people killed me sister."

Describing her as an intelligent young girl. The schools counselor Diana Russ explains. "The whole school is deeply saddened by Jaelynn's death. Her death is a terrible waste of a life. At 15 years old, she should have been living a carefree life, she should've enjoyed the school's dance, but instead she was ashamed and felt that she had to end her life. The people that are responsible for her death and or anyone who stood by and watched it happen passively should be punished."

Leyla couldn't keep reading the article, she felt the tears fall down her face, now she knew why Melaine never told her about her sister, it was probably too hard for her to talk about.
