Low budget edutainment games in the early 1990s wanted to be gender inclusive, but they couldn't afford multiple sets of player character sprites, so you always ended up playing as a kid who looked like this, and I'm convinced there was some sort of formative influence going on here for a non-trivial chunk my generation.

Today I learned Jinbesan means “Mr/Mrs Whale Shark." So yeah, gender non comforting icon. I chose various flags for Jinbesan so head-cannon which ever one you like best :) (Also I’m aware of Japanese pronouns and how gender is referred to in that language but this is just for fun :D)
Feel free to use these for personal use (stickers, icons, etc.)
Happy Pride!

Winx Club but make it ✨ high fantasy ✨
even thought this took me forever to finish, this all started from the pretty simple idea of: what if Winx fairies but with actually fantasy inspired designs?
I actually first had a more ambitious concept planned but I settled for something more reminiscent of the original outfits to keep them recognisable. I still want to eventually revisit my more ambitious designs but for now, have this.
The design inspirations for every character should be pretty obvioius: Bloom gets some fun dragon features, Stella gets to be a little more extravagant because of her royal status, Flora gets to look like a dryad, Layla is a fish, Tecna becomes a straight up (installation) wizard and Musa gets some fun bird features (cause songbirds, you know)
If you want to hear me talk about it more, I made a video talking about it: https://youtu.be/dhVM2W9aqHw

That post that’s like “your first anime can’t be something you saw when you were a little kid because kids can’t tell the difference, it’s all just cartoons” has been bugging me because, like, since when?
I grew up in Canada in the 1980s; the local station’s Saturday morning block was usually a mix of American, Japanese, and Franco-Belgian cartoons, and most of my peers could readily tell the difference. We may not have been able to explain the history of the various schools of animation, but we got that there were distinct categories.
(And had roaring arguments about whether The Last Unicorn was made in Japan or not, which in retrospect is both completely understandable and extremely funny.)
You want to know what actually confused six-year-old me?
She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985).
I imagine if I’d only watched Cartoons For Boys it wouldn’t have thrown me, but was also a regular viewer of a fair number of Cartoons For Girls, and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out where She-Ra fit in. It was... a cartoon for girls, for boys? A cartoon for boys, for girls?
